ON FRIDAY OCTOBER 20, 2006. MY SON AND 3 FRIENDS WERE LEAVING A FRIENDS HOUSE. WHEN MY SON APPLIED HIS BRAKE TO SLOW, THE BRAKES FAILED. WHEN THEY FAILED THE ENGINE REVVED COMPLETELY UP, THROTTLED OUT AND SHUT DOWN THE VEHICLE. HE OF COURSE HAD NO BRAKES, BUT NOW NO STEERING, AND THE ENGINE WAS OFF. NOT HAVING ANY CONTROL, THE VEHICLE HIT A LOOSE ROCK, SLID INTO A DITCH WHICH THEN SENT THEM INTO A SERIES OF ROLLOVERS NO LESS THAN 5 NO MORE THEN 7. THE AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. WHEN THEY LANDED 3 OF THE 4 DOORS WERE JAMMED SHUT. AS THEY CLIMB OUT OF THE VEHICLE, THEY NOTICED IT WAS BURNING. IT BURNED FROM BEHIND THE DASH THROUGH THE ENGINE. I HAVE PICTURES IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE. THE WORST INJURY AT THE TIME WAS MY SON'S SHOULDER, THEY WERE CONCERNED IT HAD A WORSE TEAR. NOTHING CAN BE DONE TO FIX THIS VEHICLE. I HAVE NOTIFIED CHEVY AND GM. I AM ALSO TALKING TO AN ATTORNEY NEXT WEEK. THE SERVICE BRAKE HYDRAULIC ANTILOCK RECALL HAS CAUSED ME CONCERN. WE DON'T KNOW IF IT WAS EVER TAKEN FOR IT'S REPAIR. NOW GM CAN'T EVEN FIND OR TRACE YET THE VIN NUMBER. HE HAD ONLY HAD IT 2 WEEKS WHEN WE HAD TO PUT IT IN THE SHOP BECAUSE IT HAD TO BE JUMPED TO START. THEN A WEEK AND A HALF ALMOST 2 WEEKS LATER THE BRAKES GO OUT. SOMETHING MAJOR WENT WRONG, AND HE HADN'T EVEN HAD IT 30 DAYS YET. IT COULD HAVE KILLED 4 KIDS. I WANT TO KNOW WHAT MALFUNCTIONED. *NM

DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE'S BRAKE LINES WERE RUSTED. AN INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP DISCOVERED THE RUSTED BRAKE LINES AND SUGGESTED THE VEHICLE BE TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED SERVICE DEALER. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE SERVICE DEALER WHO DETERMINED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS LEAKING BRAKE FLUID. THE AUTO INSURER INSPECTED THE VEHICLE FOR POSSIBLE DAMAGE CAUSED BY THE TOWING COMPANY AND DETERMINED THAT THE LEAKAGE WAS DUE TO THE RUSTING. THE BRAKE LINES WERE REPLACED AND THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AFTER THE COMPLAINT WAS TAKEN.

DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THE DASH PANEL WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED INDICATING THERE WAS A LACK OF ABS AT 3MPH WHILE BRAKE PRESSURE WAS APPLIED. ALTHOUGH THE VEHICLE ADEQUATELY STOPPED, THERE WERE NO ANTILOCK BRAKES. THE VEHICLE WAS SEEN BY A DEALER, BUT NO REPAIRS WERE MADE. THERE IS A NHTSA RECALL, #05V379000, REGARDING THE ANTILOCK BRAKES. THE VEHICLE HAS THE SAME PROBLEMS AS INDICATED IN THE RECALL; HOWEVER IT IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL DUE TO THE VIN.

DT: THE CONTACT OWNS A 1996 CHEVROLET BLAZER. THERE WERE PROBLEMS WITH THE ABS SYSTEM. A LOUD SQUEAKING NOISE CAME FROM THE BRAKES , AND WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS PRESSED THE NOISE BECAME LOUDER. THERE WAS EXTENDED STOPPING DISTANCE THAT WAS CAUSED BY THE ABS. ALSO, THE ABS LIGHT ILLUMINATED UNTIL THE BACK BRAKE PADS AND CYLINDERS WERE REPLACED. THIS REMEDIED THE ABS LIGHT FROM BEING ILLUMINATED, BUT THE CONSUMER WAS STILL HEARING THE LOUD SQUEAKING NOISE, AND WAS STILL HAVING EXTENDED STOPPING DISTANCES. WHILE THE BRAKES WERE BEING REPAIRED THE SECOND TIME THE BRAKE SPECIALIST REFERRED HIM TO GENERAL MOTORS FOR THE BRAKE PROBLEM. THERE IS RECALL 99I006000 SAFETY IMPROVEMENT CAMPAIGN FOR THIS YEAR, MAKE, AND MODEL OF VEHICLE, FOR THE SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC: ANTI LOCK BRAKES. HOWEVER, THIS VEHICLE IS NOT INCLUDED DUE TO VIN. *AK

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1996 CHEVROLET BLAZER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED WHEN THE INTERIOR CAUGHT ON FIRE. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT CAME AND EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE ORIGIN OF THE FIRE WAS FROM THE HEATER. THREE WEEKS PRIOR TO THE FIRE, THE VEHICLE HAD REGULAR MAINTENANCE PERFORMED. THERE WERE NO INJURIES AND THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. A FIRE REPORT WAS FILED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE INCIDENT. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN.

GM HAS A SAFETY RECALL ON MY 1996 BLAZER THAT THEY WILL NOT HONOR FOR ME. THEY HAVE INDICATED THE RECALL WAS A LONG TIME AGO AND MY CAR IS 10 YEARS OLD. I HAD THE EXACT PROBLEM FOR THE LAST 5-6 YEARS OR MORE, BUT NEVER RECEIVED A NOTICE, AND NEVER GOT IT FIXED. I WAS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM AND TOOK MEASURES AND LIMITED MY DRIVING WHEN IT MIGHT BE A PROBLEM. I FELT COMFORTABLE WITH THE PROBLEM AS LOW RISK WHEN I DRIVE. NOW I AM SELLING THE CAR AS IS. I FEEL THERE COULD BE A SAFETY HAZARD IF SOMEONE ELSE IS DRIVING THAT IS NOT AS AWARE AND CAUTIOUS AS I AM. THE RECALL IS THE WINDSHIELD WASHER MOTOR IS INTERMITTENT. SOMETIMES THE WIPERS WON'T WORK. THIS HAS BEEN SCARY IN A DOWN POUR AND WHEN A PASSING CAR SPLASHED A MUDDY WAVE ON THE WINDSHIELD WHILE I WAS DRIVING IN TRAFFIC. I HAVE BEEN USING RAIN-X OR DRIVING MY WIFES CAR WHEN IT IS RAINING. I HAVE HAD THE CAR IN TO THE DEALER A COUPLE OF TIMES AFTER THE RECALL AND EVEN HAD THEM LOOK AT IT ONCE. THEY NEVER NOTIFIED ME OF THE RECALL. THIS IS A GM RECOGNIZED SAFETY ISSUE THAT THEY SHOULD CORRECT (AT LEAST ONCE) REGARDLESS HOW OLD MY CAR IS. A THE ORIGINAL OWNER, I SHOULD HAVE THE RIGHT TO ONE FREE REPAIR, AND CAN CASH IT IN ANYTIME. PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU CAN HELP ME. OTHERWISE WILL NOTIFY WHOEVER I SELL THE CAR TO, AND HOPE THEY DON'T HAVE AN ACCIDENT. *JB

DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS DID NOT WORK. THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS WORKED INTERMITTENTLY PRIOR TO THE INCIDENT. THERE WAS A NHTSA RECALL, # 03V159000, REGARDING THE VISIBILITY: WINDSHIELD WIPER/WASHER. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL DUE TO THE VIN.

NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 01V200000 PRODUCT CAMPAIGN BULLETIN NO: 01048 AFTER NEARLY LOSING CONTROL ON THE INTERSTATE HIGHWAY I DECIDED TO HAVE THE FRONT END CHECKED. THE FRONT BALL JOINTS NEED REPLACED. I FURTHER LEARNED OF THE ABOVE MENTIONED REFERENCES HOWEVER, THE DEALERSHIP IN ANKENY WAS UNHELPFUL, RUDE, AND BASICALLY TOLD ME THEY DON'T HAVE TO DO ANY WORK REGARDLESS OF BULLETINS, ETC... EACH DAY THE VEHICLE IS HARDER TO HANDLE AND A MECHANIC FRIEND ADVISED WILL START TO CAUSE ADDITIONAL PROBLEMS WITH SUSPENSION. WHY DO WE HAVE POLICIES BOTH GOVERNMENT AND CORPORATE WHEN DEALERSHIPS TOTALLY DISREGARD ALL THE RULES. I HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS BEFORE AND KNOW OF MANY OTHERS THAT DEALERSHIPS LEFT IN DIRE STRAITS. I PURCHASE MY VEHICLE USED ON 12/4/01 , I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THE TEMPERATURE GAUGE EVERY YEAR BECAUSE IT INDICATES IT IS OVERHEATING. 3 WEEKS AGO IT STARTED SAYING IT WAS OVERHEATING AND SMOKE FILLED THE INTERIOR OF MY VEHICLE WITH FUMES. PURCHASED 1996 CHEVY BLAZER 1/15/04 FROM CARMAX. EXPERIENCED FREQUENT ISSUES WITH HEATING AND COOLING. 3/22/05 1ST MECHANIC FOUND NO TROUBLE FOR 2 DAYS, THEN DETERMINED THERMOSTAT WAS BAD. 2ND MECHANIC REPLACED THERMOSTAT. BROKE DOWN TWICE DUE TO PRESSURE IN COOLING SYSTEM FORCING RADIATOR HOSES OFF. 6/4/05 MECHANIC RESEATED HOSES & CLAMPS, REPLACED RADIATOR CAP, AND FLUSHED SYSTEM. 25 MILES AWAY FROM SHOP TEMP SHOT UP TO 260 DEGREES AND BLEW ALL FLUID OUT. TRIED REFILLING AND WATER IS RUSHING OUT OF THE RADIATOR END CAPS AS FAST AS WE'RE FILLING IT. THERE'S AN EXTREMELY HIGH LEVEL OF SLUDGE THAT APPEARS TO BE DEX-COOL RELATED IN THE OVERFLOW TANK AND HAS ALSO BEEN SEEN IN THE FLUIDS THAT HAVE BEEN DRAINING DURING BREAKDOWNS.

THE RADIATOR AND COOLING SYSTEM ON MY 1996 CHEVROLET BALZER GETS RUSTY AND CLOGGED EVERY COUPLE OF YEARS. IN 1998 THE WHOLE RADIATOR WAS TAKEN OUT AND BOILED. IN 2001 THE COOLING SYSTEM WAS FLUSHED AGAIN DUE TO RUST AND CLOGGING. AND NOW, APRIL 2004, THE SYSTEM HAS CLOGGED AGAIN AND CAUSES ENGINE OVERHEAT. GM USES DEX COOL WHICH IS SUPPOSED TO LAST FIVE YEARS, BUT EVERY COUPLE OF YEARS THIS COOLANT SEEMS TO CLOG THE SYSTEM AND REQUIRES AN OVERHAUL COSTING AROUND $400. *LA

ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS, THE BLAZER SUFFERS FROM SUDDEN ACCELERATION AS I DEPRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL. IT HAS HAPPENED AT LEAST 6 TIMES IN THE LAST YEAR. I HAVE ALSO NOTICED THE SUDDEN ACCELERATION WHEN I COME TO A FULL STOP AT A STOPLIGHT.

AFTER THE CONSUMER PARKED THE VEHICLE IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT ANTI FREEZE HAD A THICK MUDDY TEXTURE IN THE RADIATOR. THIS CONDITION CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO OVERHEAT ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS. DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED, THE VEHICLE TRANSMISSION SLIPPED. THERE WAS A FLARE-UP BETWEEN GEARS, AND A HARSH ENGAGEMENT BETWEEN FIRST AND SECOND GEAR. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A PRIVATE REPAIR SHOP, WHERE IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE ON-BOARD COMPUTER WAS INACCURATE. THERE IS A NHTSA TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN # 9774L60E08A, WHICH PERTAINS TO THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE WORK WAS NOT PERFORMED UPON SALE OF THE VEHICLE.

THE TRANSMISSION FAILED WITH NO WARNING. ACCORDING TO TSB 00-07-30-022 THE 4L60E A/T WILL LOSE REVERSE, 2ND, AND 4TH GEARS. THIS IS CAUSED BY A DEFECTIVE PART IN THE TRANSMISSION CALLED THE REACTION SUN SHELL, WHICH WAS RETURNED TO ME BY THE TRANSMISSION REBUILDER. THE FAILURE WAS NOT MAINTENANCE RELATED IN ANY WAY. THE FAILURE OF THE PART WAS DUE TO INADEQUATE STRENGTH. THERE ARE NUMEROUS AFTERMARKET REACTION SUN SHELLS THAT ARE MUCH STRONGER AND DURABLE THAN THE DEFECTIVE GM PART. THIS PROBLEM IS WIDESPREAD AND COULD CREATE A DANGEROUS SITUATION. THE TRANSMISSION WILL ONLY SHIFT FROM 1ST TO 3RD IF YOU ACCELERATE QUICKLY IN 1ST THEN LET OFF THE ACCELERATOR. I PULLED ON TO A HIGH SPEED HIGHWAY AND COULD ONLY MAINTAIN 25 MPH WITH NO PLACE TO PULL OVER, UNTIL I REALIZED THAT IT WOULD SHIFT TO 3RD IF YOU LET OFF THE ACCELERATOR. SEVERAL VEHICLES HAD TO SWERVE TO AVOID HITTING MINE. THIS CAN CREATE A DANGEROUS SITUATION IF SOMEONE TRIES TO TURN AROUND AND NEEDS REVERSE OR NEEDS TO DRIVE AT HIGH SPEED SUCH AS ON A LIMITED ACCESS HIGHWAY. GM SHOULD RECALL ALL VEHICLES THAT THE TSB APPLIES TO. THEY KNOW ABOUT THE SITUATION BUT DO NOT WANT TO ISSUE A RECALL BECAUSE IT WOULD COST THEM TOO MUCH MONEY. *JB

I OWN A 1996 CHEVY BLAZER. MY GRANDDAUGHTER WAS DRIVING IN WET WEATHER, LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND SLAMMED INTO A ROCK CLIFF. THE CAR IS TOTALED AND I AM CONCERNED BECAUSE THE AIRBAG DID NOT DEPLOY. I BELIEVE THE IMPACT WAS STRONG ENOUGH THAT THEY SHOULD HAVE DEPLOYED. IT WAS A FRONT END COLLISION AND SHE WAS GOING APPROXIMATELY 25 MILES PER HOUR. ALTHOUGH SHE WAS NOT GOING FAST, THE IMPACT WAS VERY HARD, ENOUGH TO TOTAL THE CAR. THE WHOLE FRONT END WAS DESTROYED. CONTACT'S VEHICLE WAS ALMOST AT A COMPLETE STOP WHEN IT WAS HIT IN THE REAR END BY A VEHICLE GOING APPROXIMATELY 45-50 MPH. THE SERVICE DEALER COULD NOT FIND THE PROBLEM WITH THE AIRBAG AS TO WHY IT DID NOT DEPLOY. ON THE SECOND OCCASION IN OCTOBER, 2004, CONTACT'S VEHICLE HIT ANOTHER VEHICLE IN THE REAR PART WHILE GOING ABOUT 40-45 MPH, BECAUSE THE BRAKES TO STOP HIS VEHICLE. A CERTIFIED MECHANIC STATED IT WAS A MALFUNCTION IN THE AIRBAG SYSTEM. THE DEALERSHIP RAN A DIAGNOSTIC TEST TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE AIRBAG PROBLEM, BUT COULD NOT DETERMINE WHAT THE CAUSE FOR NON DEPLOYMENT OF THE AIRBAG. *AK

I RECENTLY WAS ON THE WAY HOME FROM DENVER, CO ON THE HIGHWAY. I STOPPED FOR FUEL NOTICING MY VEHICLE WAS CONSUMING MORE GAS THAN USUAL. I FUELED UP AND LEFT. WHEN I ARRIVED HOME I NOTICED GASOLINE DRIPPING ON THE GROUND. I IMMEDIATELY CALLED A MECHANIC. MY WIFE'S FATHER IS A CERTIFIED MECHANIC AND OWNS HIS OWN SHOP IN DENVER. HE FIXED THE LEAK, BUT TOLD ME THE LEAK STARTED BECAUSE THE FUEL LINES WERE RUBBING THE TRANSMISSION AND SHOWED ME. TO MY SURPRISE THE FUEL LINES WERE NOT SECURED IN THEIR PROPER LOCATION. I HAVE NEVER HAD ANY WORK DONE TO THE FUEL LINES OR EVEN ANY WORK DONE IN THE AREA OF THE PROBLEM. SO I TOOK THE BLAZER BACK HOME TO COLORADO SPRINGS. ABOUT A MONTH LATER I NOTICED THE FUEL SMELL WAS BACK. I POPPED THE HOOD BECAUSE I DID NOT SEE ANY FUEL LEAKING. THE FUEL WAS POURING OUT OF THE LINES AT THE TOP OF THE ENGINE WHERE THEY CONNECT TO THE COUPLINGS FOR REMOVAL OF THE ENGINE. I THEN DECIDED TO TAKE THE BLAZER TO A CLOSER LOCATION FOR REPAIR. THIS LOCATION WAS DANIELS CHEVROLET LOCATED IN COLORADO SPRINGS. THEY TOLD ME THAT THE O-RINGS WERE PINCHED AND THAT THE GASKET WHERE THE FUEL LINES GO INTO THE INTAKE MANIFOLD WAS BAD. I PAID THEM 480.60 TO REPAIR THE O-RINGS AND GASKET. FOUR DAYS LATER, THE SMELL OF FUEL IS BACK AND THE LEAK IS THERE AGAIN AT THE COUPLINGS ON THE BACK OF THE ENGINE WERE THE DEALERSHIP REPAIRED THEM THE FIRST TIME. NOW THE BLAZER IS BACK AT THE DEALERSHIP AGAIN FOR THE SECOND TIME FOR THE SAME ISSUE. THE VEHICLE IS MY WIFE'S, BUT DUE TO THE PROBLEM WITH THE FUEL, I HAVE BEEN DRIVING IT. THE FUEL LEAKS RIGHT ON TOP OF THE EXHAUST PIPE. THIS IS COULD BE A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION IF THE FUEL WERE TO IGNITE. THEY LOOKED AT ABS AND SAID THERE WERE NO ERRORS COMING UP. GMC SAID BRAKE PADS WERE WORN - THEY WERE REPLACED 6 MONTHS AGO, AND THEN AGAIN ABOUT 30 DAYS PRIOR TO ACCIDENT. MECHANIC TOOK US ON TEST DRIVE OVER UNEVEN PAVEMENT, WE TRIED TO BRAKE, AND ABS WENT TO FLOOR, STOPPING WAS EXTREMELY DELAYED. WE WERE TOLD THAT WAS "NORMAL". I WAS ON MY WAY TO MY SISTER'S HOUSE, I CAME UP TO A STOP SIGN, AND THE BRAKES WENT TO THE FLOOR AND THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT STOP. WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS PULLED OUT OF THE DITCH, AND THE BRAKES WERE TESTED, THEY SEEMED TO WORK AGAIN. I WAS VERY LUCKY, I FOUND OUT LATER, THAT MY BOYFRIEND HAD DRIVEN THE CAR, EARLIER THAT MONTH AND THE BRAKES HAD DONE THE SAME THING TO HIM, HE CHECKED THE BRAKE PADS, BUT THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THEM, AND THE BRAKES SEEMED TO WORK AFTER THAT. CERTIFIED MASTER AUTO MECHANIC, THAT'S WHY NO SPECIFIC VEHICLE. HAVE SEEN A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF THESE GM TRUCKS, ALL LINES, BLAXER, TAHOE, K3500, ETC. WITH THE BELT TENSIONERS COMING APART. THE CENTER ROTS OUT AND THE SPRING JUST MAKES THE TENSIONER FALL SIDEWAYS. FOR A WHILE ITS NOT BAD, THE BELT IS STILL ON AND ONLY SLIPS WET. WHEN THEY COME OFF THERE IS SUDDENLY NO POWER STEERING, ALONG WITH OF COURSE NO ALTERNATOR. WE ARE CHANGING THESE AT PROBABLY ONE PER DAY, AND CHECK ALL OF THESE VEHICLES. I HAVE FOUND THAT ALL OF THEM WITH AT LEAST THIRTY THOUSAND MILES EITHER NEED A NEW TENSIONER OR HAVE ALREADY HAD THE TENSIONER REPLACED. THIS COVERS A FEW YEARS, FROM AT LEAST 1995 THROUGH 1999, AND IS SUCH A COMMON PROBLEM THAT ALL THE AFTERMARKET SUPPLIERS I HAVE SEEN (GATES, NAPA, CARQUEST) STOCK THESE PARTS. BOUGHT A FLASHER AT NAPA AUTO PARTS, THINKING I COULD JUST REPLACE IT, BUT I COULDN'T FIND THE FLASHER. WENT TO THE DEALER TO INQUIRE ABOUT THE REPLACEMENT OF THE FLASHER AND THEY SAID CHEVROLET HAS DESIGNED THE TURN SIGNAL SYSTEM SO THAT THE ENITRE DASHBOARD HAS TO BE REMOVED TO REPLACE THE FLASHER WHICH WILL TAKE APPROX. 2 HOURS OF LABOR, COSTING OVER $200. THAT IS OUTRAGEOUS! THEY ALSO SAID THERE IS A RECALL ON THE MULTI-FUNCTION SWITCH WHICH CONTROLS THE HAZARD LIGHTS AND TURN SIGNALS, (#O1V364000) BUT THAT MY VEHICLE IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THE SYSTEM WILL HAVE TO BE FLUSHED...CHEVY IS AWARE OF THIS ISSUE AS REFERENCED BY THEIR REPAIR BULLETINS...THE EXTEND AND COST OF THE DAMAGE IS UNDERSTATED.... DEXCOOL IN RADIATOR COOLING SYSTEM HAD TURNED TO A RUSTY SLUDGE. HAD COOLANT FLUSH DONE AT 60,000 MILES BY THE DEALER. HAD DEALER REINSPECT VEHICLE AS I WAS GOING ON A LONG ROAD. I HAVE COPY OF 27 POINT INSPECTION STATING MY VEHICLE WAS IN GOOD CONDITION WITH NO NOTED PROBLEMS. 261 MILES LATER I WAS STRANDED IN THE DESERT WITH A PLUGGED AND BLOWN RADIATOR AND HEATER CORE. THE RADIATOR CAP WAS COMPLETELY RUSTED. THE FLUID IN THE OVERFLOW TANK WAS A RUSTY BROWN THICK MESS. THE HOSES GOING INTO THE RADIATOR HAD TO BE REPLACED DUE TO A COATING OF RUST ON THE INSIDE. I HAD A NEW RADIATOR PUT ON, NEW HOSES, AND THE RADIATOR AND ENGINE BLOCK REFLUSHED, NEW COOLANT ADDED AND OVERFLOW TANK WASHED. 1,500 MILES LATER (TO THE CURRENT MILEAGE I AM AT NOW) THE DEXCOOL FLUID IS ALREADY DISCOLORING AND PARTICLES OF RUST ARE STARTING TO REAPPEAR. WHICH TELLS ME THE CORROSION IS DEEP INSIDE THE SYSTEM. GM WILL NOT ACKNOWLEDGE A PROBLEM OF RUSTING AND CORROSION, DEALER WILL TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEIR WORK OR INSPECTIONS. GM NEVER WARNED THE CONSUMERS THAT THIS HAD TO BE CAREFULLY WATCHED OR MAJOR ENGINE DAMAGE WOULD OCCUR. GM HAS A TRAINING VIDEO THAT WAS SENT TO DEALERS THAT SPECIFICALLY DEALS WITH THE DEXCOOL CORROSION PROBLEM. IT IS CALLED GM TRAINING VIDEO UNDERSTANDING RADIATOR CAP AND COOLING SYSTEM CONTAMINATION. THEY ARE CLAIMING THE RADIATOR CAPS MAY HAVE A PROBLEM PROPERLY SEALING THE RADIATOR THUS CAUSING HIGH EVAPORATION AND THUS CONTAMINATING THE COOLING SYSTEM. IF THEY ARE AWARE OF THIS WHY WAS THE CONSUMER NOT INFORMED? HOW CAN GM NOT TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE DAMAGE THAT IS BEING DONE TO A LARGE AMOUNT ON THEIR VEHICLES. THEY ALSO CLAIM THAT THE RADIATOR DESIGN ON CERTAIN TYPES OF THEIR VEHICLES MAKE THEM MORE PRONE TO THE CORROSION CONTAMINATION, SUCH AS THE BLAZER, JIMMY, ST PICKUPS, CAMAROS. THAT IS WHY NOT ALL GM PRODUCTS THAT WERE DELIVERED ORIGINALLY WITH DEXCOOL HAS HAD A PROBLEM.

DRIVERS SIDE DOOR ALWAYS SAGGED DOWN A BIT. HINGES EVENTUALLY FAILED REQUIRING HINGES TO BE REPLACED. DUE TO THIS PROBLEM, THE LATCH CATCH ALSO FAILED. BOTH REQUIRED NEW PARTS AND WELDING TO MAKE THE DOOR OPERABLE AS DOOR WOULD NO LONGER LATCH SHUT. I LITERALLY HAD TO TIE THE DOOR SHUT TO TAKE IT FOR REPAIRS. IN REVIEWING YOUR SITE, I ALSO HAVE HAD SIMILAR PROBLEMS AS MANY OTHER BLAZER OWNERS (HOOD LATCH MECHANISM FAILED; UPPER BALL JOINTS NEEDED REPLACED; TOO MANY PROBLEMS WITH THIS VEHICLE TO LIST HERE). THE METAL THAT THE DOOR STRIKE LATCHES ARE MOUNTED TO IS FALLING AWAY. THERE IS NO SIGN OF RUST, AND THE DRIVERS SIDE DOOR HAS A SIGNIFICANT NUMBER OF HOLES AT THIS MOUNTING POINT. THE REAMINING 3 DOORS ARE BEGINNING TO SHOW SIGNS OF METAL FAILURE AS WELL, ALTHOUGH NOT AS BAD AS THE DRIVER'S DOOR. YOU CAN LITERALLY TAKE 2 FINGERS AND MOVE THE "U" SHAPED DOOR STRIKE LATCH QUITE EASILY. WHEN DRIVING, AIR WILL ENTER IF YOU LEAN AGAINST THE DOOR. IT IS A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE THIS LATCH BREAKS OFF COMPLETELY AND THE ALLOW THE DOOR TO OPEN. 1 DEALER (KERY-MORRIS CHEVROLET IN COLUMBUS, IN) AND 2 INDEPENDENT BODY SHOPS CLAIM THEY'VE NEVER SEEN THIS BEFORE. AFTER CALLING CHEVROLET, IT WAS SUGGESTED THAT WE TAKE THIS VEHICLE TO ANOTHER DEALER FOR ANOTHER OPINION. WE WENT TO OUR LOCAL DEALER (ROYAL CHEVROLET IN BLOOMINGTON, IN) AND THE BODY SHOP MANAGER INDICATED THAT HE HAD SEEN THIS BEFORE BUT NOT THIS BAD; HE CHECKED OTHER 96 BLAZERS (INCLUDING HIS IN-LAWS) AND FOUND THE SAME THING TO BE HAPPENING. THERE ARE NO BULLETINS REGARDING THIS, SO EVEN THOUGH IT IS SERIOUS, IT IS OUR RESPONSIBILITY TO REPAIR IT (ESTIMATED AT $475.00 FROM KERI-MORRIS). ROYAL INDICATED THAT IF IT WAS RUSTED, THEN THE FACTORY WOULD STAND BEHIND IT, BUT NOT BECAUSE OF METAL FATIGUE. I CAN PROVIDE PICTURES IF DESIRED; THE PROBLEM IS VERY EASY TO SEE.

JUST BROUGHT 96 BLAZERLS WITH 82,000 IN DEC.02. WAS TOLD THAT THE ONLY PROBLEM WAS THEY HAD TO HAVE THE TRANSMISSION REPLACED AT 20,000. WELL,83,000 MILES THE HEATER WAS ON HOT BLOWING WHEN I NOTICED THAT IT TURN COLD AND THE GAGE WENT TO THE RED ZONE. I IMMEDIATELY TURN SWICHES OFF ON THE BLOWER IT WENT BACK TO NORMAL. TWO DAYS LATER IT HAPPEN AGAIN BUT I TURN OFF THE HEATER AND BLOWER COMPLETELY IT WENT BACK TO NORMAL. WE THOUGHT THE TERMOSTACT GOT STUCK AND REPLACED IT . AT THAT TIME WE NOTICE THAT IT WAS GEL UP OVER THE TERMOSTACT, AFTER REPLACING IT , WE TESTED DROVE IT AND IT STILL DID THE SAME THING AGAIN. WE LOOKED AT THE RADIATOR AND FOUND THAT IT WAS GEL UP AND LOOK LIKE RUBBER. WE THEN DECIDED TO CHECK THE FLUID IN THE TRANSMISSION WE NOTICED THAT THE DIPPED STICK WAS RUSTED ON THE OUTSIDE AND WAS RUSTED THE LENGTH OF THE STICK THE FLUID WAS RUSTED. WE WILL NOW HAVE TO FLUSHED THE RADIATOR AND TRANSMISSION. I HAD CHECKED YOUR SITE AND FOUND NO RECALLS OR SERVICE BULLETINS ON THE GELING AND TRANSMISSIONS BEFORE BUYING. TELL TODAY WHEN I DECIDED TO CHECKED OUT COMPLAINTS AND FOUND THAT THERE WAS 54 AND COUPLE WITH THE SAME PROBLEMS OF GELING AND TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS. SO I DECIDED TO CHECK OUT 98 BECAUSE MY SISTERINLAW HAD JUST BROUGHT ONE AND NO RECALLS OR SERVICE BULLETINS BUT THEY ARE COMPALINTS OF COOL HEATING (PROBABLY FROM GELING ANITIFREEZE) AND TRANSMISSIONS BEING REPLACED ONCE ,TWICE AND I GUY 3 TIMES. SO I CHECK 2001 AND THEY WAS SOMEONE ELSE REPLACING A TRANSMISSION. SOMETHING IS VERY WRONG WHEN THERE IS GELING OF ANTIFREEZE FROM 96 TO 98 AND REPLACING TRANSMISSIONS LEFT AND RIGHT SINCE 96. TO ME CHEVROLET HAS A BAD TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS AND GELING PROBLEMS IN THESE BLAZERS GETTING AWAY WITH IT. OVER THE PAST 6-8 MONTHS I HAVE NOTICED THE BRAKING ISSUE SEVERAL TIMES (MORE THAN 10.) LUCKILY NONE WERE EMERGENCY STOPS, HOWEVER WHEN BRAKING DUE TO TRAFFIC LIGHT CHANGE OR STOPPING WHILE GOING DOWNHILL, THE BRAKES "CHATTER," AN AUDIBLE WHINE IS PRODUCED, AND IT IS NECESSARY TO PUMP THE BRAKES BEFORE IT WILL REGAIN PRESSURE AND STOP. *JB

CURRENTLY, THE FRONT SUSPENSION NEEDS REPAIRED, THE BRAKES WERE REPLACED AT 18000 AND ARE NOW GONE AGAIN, THE REAR SEALS ARE LEAKING DAMAGING THE REAR BRAKES, THE DRIVE LIGHTS STILL FLASH INTERMITTENTLY, A SMELL OF GASOLINE IS IN THE VEHICLE AFTER REFUELING, THE ENGINE PINGS NO MATTER WHAT FUEL IS USED. NOTHING THE DEALER HAS DONE HAS SOLVED THE MULTITUDE OF PROBLEMS. SEAT BELT PROBLEMS ON PASSENGER SIDE, INTERIOR TRIM FELL OFF, ON AND ON.

BOTH O2 SENSORS HAVE BEEN REPLACED (AT SEPERATE TIME IN PAST 4 MONTHS). UPPER/LOWER BALL JOINTS ARE IN NEED OF REPLACEMENT. ACCORDING TO DEALERSHIP (DESANTIS CHEVROLET) SHOULD HAVE NEVER PASSED INSPECTION IN APRIL. HAVE HAD PROBLEM WITH ABS SINCE PURCHASE OF THE VEHICLE. FIRST RECALL DID NOTHING TO FIX PROBLEM. ABS CAN'T TELL DIFFERENCE FROM WET & DRY PAVEMENT. ABS WILL KICK IN WHEN SLOWING DOWN ON GRAVEL AT 20MPH, BUT NOT AT FASTER SPEEDS ON WET PAVEMENT.

MY 1996 CHEVROLET BLAZER DID NOT PASS A STATE INSPECTION DUE TO CORROSION OF THE UPPER AND LOWER BALL JOINTS AND AS WELL THAT THE IDLER ARM,. THE FRONT STEERING AND SUSPENSION MUST BE REPLACED. On March 23, 2023 ABS Extended Stopping Distance on snow / slush surface proceeding downhill on a 4 lane highway (7200 South Wasatch Blvd. Midvale Utah). Other vehicles around me were stopping without issue. I noticed my ABS brakes were making the (typical operating sound a type of grinding) and I wasn't stopping. I changed lanes twice to provide for more stopping distance and eventually stopped in the left turn lane within 2 feet from rear-ending other cars had I remained in the inside lane. Located Investigation EA94-038 noting 10,000 complaints, 2000 accidents, 600 injuries. Chevrolet Safety campaign 99I006000 addressing a PCM coding change and replacing the Kelsey Hayes ABS actuator unit. Chevrolet at 800-222-1020 declined to say whether this recall was in force, was a valid recall or had ever existed.

BRAKE PERFORMANCE HAD STARTED TO DEGRADE ON LAST TRIP TO LAKE PLACE (200 MILES ROUND TRIP). PEDAL SEEMED SOFTER THAN NORMAL BRAKE WARNING LIGHT CAME ON AND STAYED LIT.. ONCE AT HOME CHECK FLUID WHICH WAS LOW. ADDED SOME FLUID. BRAKE LIGHT WENT OUT TRIED SEVERAL HARD STOPS IN DRIVE WAY AND PEDAL TRAVEL WENT ALMOST TO FLOOR. OBSERVED BRAKE FLUID ON THE GROUND ADJACENT TO FUEL TANK ON DRIVERS SIDE. DRIVERS SIDE FRAME RAIL WAS WET WITH BRAKE FLUID. FURTHER INVESTIGATION REVEALED DIRT PACKED AROUND REAR BRAKE LINE ON TOP OF RAMP RAIL. BRAKE LINE WAS FOUND TO BE SEVERELY DEGRADED ON TOP OF THE FRAME RAIL EXTENDING ALL THE WAY TO THE JUNCTION WITH THE RUBBER REAR SPLITTER LINE. HAD TO REPLACE LINE FROM JUNCTION AT REAR SPLITTER UP TO THE JUNCTION AT THE FRAME RAIL NEAR THE FRONT DRIVERS SIDE TIRE. VERY DISTURBING TO HAVE A TWO FOOT SECTION OF BRAKE LINE SO SEVERELY COMPROMISED. THIS SEEMS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM AND RELATED TO THE BUILD UP OF COMPACTED DIRT ON THE FRAME RAIL CARRYING THE REAR BRAKE LINE. ON MY 1996 CHEVY BLAZER IT WAS RECENTLY BROUGHT TO MY ATTENTION THAT I HAD NO REAR BRAKE LIGHTS. CONSUMER RECEIVED SEVERAL RECALLS FOR 1996 CHEVROLET S10 BLAZER. *MR THE VEHICLE'S HEATING/COOLING SYSTEM AND TRANSMISSION FAILED PREMATURELY. WE RECENTLY PURCHASED THIS 1996 BLAZER AND DUE TO IT BEING USED WE ARE WITHOUT WARRANTY. THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS SOMETIMES DO NOT COME ON AND WHEN THEY ARE WORKING THEY SOMETIMES STOP IN THE MIDST OF A RAINSTORM. THIS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND HAS CAUSED US ON MORE THAN ONE OCCASION THE NEED TO STOP DRIVING FOR OUR SAFETY AND OTHER MOTORISTS. IN JAN 99, THERMOSTAT APPEARED TO FAIL AND WHEN I OPENED THE RADIATOR CAP, NOTICED WHAT LOOKED LIKE MUD/GRIT IN CAP. TOOK THE TRUCK TO THE CHEVROLET DEALER, THEY SAID THEY DID NOT KNOW WHAT IT WAS. ENDED UP REPLACING INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKET, PULLING AND REPAIRING/CLEANING RADIATOR AND REPLACING THERMOSTAT. IN JULY 2002, TRUCK OVERHEATED AGAIN. TOOK IT TO FIRESTONE WHERE THEY RECOMMENDED $1200 IN REPAIRS TO FLUSH OUT "COAGULATED" COOLANT (DEXCOOL). ENDED UP REPLACING RADIATOR, RADIATOR CAP, AND THERMOSTAT (AGAIN) AND FLUSHING ENTIRE COOLANT SYSTEM. FIRESTONE PERSONNEL SAID THIS WAS A RECURRING PROBLEM ON THE BLAZERS WITH THE DEXCOOL BREAKING DOWN AND TURNING INTO A BROWN, MUDDY, GUMMY SUBSTANCE. ACCODING TO FIRESTONE, GM HAS SEVERAL TECH BULLETINS OUT ON THIS, BUT THEY REFUSE TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. THIS DEXCOOL BROKE DOWN AFTER ONLY 30,000 MILES. WHY HAS NOTHING BEEN DONE ABOUT THIS? I CHOSE A CHEVY BLAZER BECAUSE I KNOW THAT CHEVY IS KNOWN FOR THE QUALITY OF THEIR TRUCKS. UNFORTUNATELY I COULDN'T BE ANY MORE DISAPPOINTED WITH MY PURCHASE AND ALSO WITH MY DEALER. EVER SINCE I OWNED MY 1996 CHEVY BLAZER I'VE HAD PROBLEMS WITH IT AND THE DEALERSHIP HAS CONTINUED TO TAKE ADVANTAGE AS ME AS A CUSTOMER. I CAN'T BELIEVE HOW UNPROFESSIONAL A DEALERSHIP CAN BE AND ALSO HOW A NEW VEHICLE CAN BE SO UNRELIABLE. THE 4TH DAY I HAD THIS TRUCK 4 -WHEEL DRIVE WENT OUT, I TOOK IT TO WILLIAM CHEVROLET AND THEY TOOK 2 WEEKS TO FIX IT, NOT ONLY THAT, BUT THEY TOLD ME TO RENT A CAR KNOWING THAT I WAS UNDER 25, INSTEAD OF LENDING ME A REPLACEMENT CAR. IN LAST 3 YEARS THE BRAKES HAVE GONE OUT ON ME 8 TIMES, AND THE DEALERSHIP WOULDN'T ONCE COVER IT. MY WIPER MOTOR WENT OUT JUST BEFORE THE WIPER PIECE RECALL WENT OUT, I PAID FOR THEM TO FIX IT, AND GIVE ME A NEW MOTOR. BUT THEN, WHEN I WENT TO THE DEALERSHIP WITH THE RECALL THEY WOULDN'T REIMBURSE ME FOR THE MOTOR JUST THE PIECE. I DON'T UNDERSTAND IF THAT PIECE CAUSED MY WIPER MOTOR TO GO OUT THAT WHY DO I HAVE TO PAY FOR IT? MY HEATER IS NOW NOT WORKING TO IT'S FULLEST AND IT'S THE MIDDLE OF WINTER. WE JUST GOT 21 INCHES OF SNOW AND MY 4 WHEEL DRIVE IS NOT WORKING AGAIN. AFTER THAT I CHECKED TO SEE IF MY FRONT WHEEL WERE MOVING, AND OFCOURSE THEY WEREN'T, THEREFORE I ONLY HAVE REAR WHEEL DRIVE ON A $25,000 4X4. THE LAST 2 DAYS HAVE BEEN HELL, FIRST I COULD NOT GET MY TRUCK OUT OF ITS PARKING SPOT AFTER I'D SHOVELED FOR AN HOUR, AFTER I FINALLY GOT IT OUT, IT GOT STUCK IN THE SNOW ABOUT 7 TIMES, WHILE 1989 ESCORTS ARE DRIVING AROUND EFFORTLESSLY. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1996 CHEVROLET BLAZER. WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, AN ABNORMAL NOISE WAS HEARD FROM THE BRAKES WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED. THE BLAZER FLIPPED ONTO ITS SIDE AND SKIDDED A GREAT DISTANCE, BEFORE FINALLY COMING TO REST UPSIDE DOWN. MY 4 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER WAS SERIOUSLY INJURED WHEN THE BACK SEAT, AND THE FRONT SEAT BROKE AND SANDWICHED HER IN BETWEEN THE TWO. SHE BROKE HER JAW WHEN SHE WAS SLAMMED INTO THE SMALL HANDLE ABOVE THE REAR RIGHT PASSENGER SIDE DOOR. SHE ALSO SUFFERED A BROKEN WRIST AND BROKEN ARM WHEN SHE WAS THROWN INTO THE DOOR. THIS BLAZER HAS OFFERED NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS. WE HAVE REPLACED THE ALTERNATOR, BRAKE PADS THREE TIMES, THE BATTERY THREE TIMES, THE AIR CONDITIONER WENT OUT IN JULY, 1999, AND EVEN AFTER HAVING IT REPAIRED TWICE, IT STILL DOESN'T WORK. WE TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR REPAIR BECAUSE OF A "GURGLING" NOISE, BUT THEY COULDN'T FIND WHAT WAS CAUSING IT, (IT WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY AT THAT TIME). NOW GAS FUMES FLOOD INTO THE VEHICLE AT VARIOUS TIMES, AFTER FILLING UP, AND EVEN WHILE DRIVING. THEY CLAIM THAT A $1,000.00 VALVE NEEDS TO BE REPLACED, BUT I SURE WISH THEY HAD KNOWN THAT WHILE THE WARRANTY WAS STILL GOOD! THE WIPERS WORK SOMETIMES, THE BRAKES ALLOW ME TO SLIDE TO A STOP ANY TIME THERE IS MOISTURE, THE LEFT RADIO SPEAKERS ONLY WORK SOMETIMES, DOME LIGHT COVER FALLS OFF, HOOD WON'T OPEN WITHOUT FORCE, PWR. I WAS INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT ON MAY 6, 1999. I HAD A VEHICLE PULL OUT IN FRONT OF ME GOING ABOUT 65 MPH. I ENDED UP T- BONING HIM ON HIS DRIVER SIDE. MY AIR BAG DID NOT DEPLOY, MY SEATBELT DID NOT HOLD ME IN POSITION TO WHERE I HIT THE REARVEIW MIRROR WITH MY FOREHEAD AND BROKE IT. THE ROAD SURFACE WAS WET BECAUSE IT HAD RAINED EARLIER. THE BOY IN THE OTHER VEHICLE WAS DRIVING AN OLDER MODEL S-10 BLAZER THE IMPACT THROW HIM TO THE PASSENGER SIDE OF HIS VEHICLE. HE SUBSTAINED MINOR INJURIES WHILE AM SUFFERING FROM SEVERE WHIPLASH, BACK-ACHES, HEAD-ACHES AND NUMBNESS. I STRONGLY FEEL WITH THE IMPACT I TOOK THE AIR BAG SHOULD"VE DEPLOYED AND THE SEAT BELT SHOULD"VE HELD ME IN PLACE AND BRAKES WOULD"VE SLOWED ME DOWN SOONER. I HAVE HAD TWO MAJOR PROBLEMS WITH THIS VEHICLE SINCE IT'S PURCHASE DATE. THE TRANSMISSION HAS EXPERIENCED TWO MAJOR FAILURES AND THE DEALER SAID HE REPLACED THEM BOTH TIMES. I HAVE CONTINUED TO EXPERIENCE SHIFTING PROBLEMS AND OCCASSIONAL LOCKUP OF THE TRANSMISSION WHEN SHIFTING FROM PARK TO DRIVE. THE TRANSMISSION DIP STICK AND FILLER TUBE HAVE HAD TO BE REPLACED TWICE FOR RUST WHICH LEADS ME TO BELIEVE THAT ENGINE COOOLANT IS GETTING INTO THE TRANSMISSION FLUID. THE SECOND PROBLEM IS NATURALLY THE ABS BRAKE SYSTEM. THIS IS THE SORRIEST EXCUSE FOR BRAKES ON A VEHICLE THAT I HAVE SEEN. I MUST ALMOST STAND ON THE BRAKE PEDAL WITH EXCESSIVE PRESSURE TO GET THE VEHICLE TO STOP. I ALSO EXPERIENCED PREMATURE BRAKE PAD WEAR OUT ON THE FRONT WHICH DAMAGE THE ROTORS. CHEVROLET REFUSED TO FIX THIS UNDER WARRANTY EVEN THOUGH THE VEHICLE ONLY HAD 20,000 MILES ON IT. THE ABS SYSTEM LOCKS UP SOMETIMES WHEN I PUSH HARD ON THE BRAKES. AFTER 3 MONTHS OF CONSUMER'S PURCHASE WHEN APPLYING THE ABS BRAKES THE VEHICLE DOES NOT STOP WITHIN FEETS. THE ABS WOULD ALLOW THE VEHICLE 4-5 BLAZER DISTANCES BEFORE STOPPING. ON 4-3-97 THE SEAT BELTS STOPPED LOCKING. ALSO, WHEN THE ENGINE IS RUNNING AND HOOD OPENED ONE CAN SEE A SPRAY MIST OF GASOLINE MISTING FROM THE ENGINE, THE SMELL IS PENETRATING INTO THE INSIDE COMPARTNMENT AND IS UNCONFORTABLE TO CONSUMER.
