THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS QUIT WORKING WITHOUT NOTICE. WE PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE NEW IN 1998 IT ONLY HAS 80,000 MILES. THE WIPERS HAVE BEEN DOING THIS SINCE 2003. WHEN WIPERS QUIT WORKING WE ARE UNABLE TO SEE THE ROADWAY AND THIS PRESENTS A SAFETY HAZARD. I HAVE READ ABOUT OTHERS HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM. MY 1998 BLAZER'S DRIVER'S AND PASSENGER'S SEAT ADJUSTMENT LEVER BROKE OFF WHEN ATTEMPTING TO ADJUST SEAT. I AM UNABLE TO ADJUST THE SEAT FOR PROPER DRIVING POSITION. THE DRIVER'S SEAT LEVER BROKE AT 30,000 MILES AND THE PASSENGER SEAT LEVER BROKE ABOUT 40,000 MILES. I HAVE BEEN DRIVING THIS VEHICLE UTILIZING VICE GRIPS TO HOLD THE DRIVER'S SEAT AND PASSENGER SEAT IN PLACE. THESE SEATS ARE NO LONGER ADJUSTABLE AND PRESENTS A SAFETY HAZARD. INQUIRIES FROM OTHER INDIVIDUALS THAT OWN THIS VEHICLE HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. FURTHER INVESTIGATION REVEALED THAT AT SOME POINT THE MANUFACTURER DISTRIBUTED A SERVICE BULLETIN REGARDING THIS DEFECT. I AM CONCERNED AS TO WHY THERE HAS NOT BEEN A RECALL AND WHY I HAVE NOT BEEN NOTIFIED OF THIS ONGOING PROBLEM. OBVIOUSLY, NUMEROUS CONSUMERS OWNING THE BLAZER ARE FACED WITH THIS SAME PROBLEM. MY 1998 CHEVY BLAZER HAS NEEDED EXTENSIVE REPAIRS TO THE TRANSMISSION AND ULTIMATELY I HAD TO HAVE A NEW TRANSMISSION PLACED IN THE VEHICLE. I HAVE SPOKEN WITH A FEW OTHER CHEVY BLAZER OWNERS AND THEY HAVE INFORMED ME OF THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THEIR VEHICLES. I HAVE HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE TRANSMISSION SLIPPING AND OVERHEATING IN MY 1998 CHEVY BLAZER. I INSTALLED A TRANSMISSION COOLER HOPING THAT WOULD STOP THE PROBLEM, BUT IT HASN'T EVEN TOUCHED THE PROBLEM. I WOULD LIKE SOMETHING NONE ABOUT THE TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS IN BLAZERS.

THE SUN SHELL BREAKS ON BLAZERS, MINE BROKE AND WHEN I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER HE SAID IT HAPPENS ALL THE TIME. SHE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, WHERE THE RADIATOR AND THE HEAT AND COOLANT THERMOSTAT WERE REPLACED, BUT THE FAILURE WASN'T CORRECTED. THE MANUFACTURER WILL BE NOTIFIED. DT: THE CONTACT COMPLAINED ABOUT A MULTIPLE PROBLEMS WITH VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE OVERHEATED. SHE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO AN INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP, AND THE MECHANIC REPLACED THE WATER PUMP. AFTERWARDS, THE THERMOSTAT CONTINUED TO ELEVATE, AND SHE RETURNED THE VEHICLE TO THE REPAIR SHOP. THE MECHANIC REPLACED THE THERMOSTAT AND ADDED COOLANT. THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO RUN HOT. THE CONTACT TOOK VEHICLE TO A DIFFERENT REPAIR SHOP, AND MECHANIC DETERMINED A LEAK IN THE INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKET. THE DEALER ATTEMPTED TO REPAIR IT BY FLUSHING THE INTAKE AND ADDING MORE COOLANT. ALTHOUGH MULTIPLE ATTEMPTS HAVE BEEN MADE TO REMEDY THIS PROBLEM IT CONTINUED TO PERSIST. *AK

I OWNED A 1996 CHEVY BLAZER. THE SEAL ON THE ENGINE WENT AT 70K MILES. HAD TO REPLACE ENGINE. I NOW OWN A 1998 CHEVY BLAZER, REPLACED THE SEAL IN DEC '04 AND THE ENGINE BLEW AT 67K MILES. HAD TO REPLACE (REBUILD) THIS ENGINE. I HAVE SERVICE RECORDS FOR BOTH VEHICLES. NO REASON TO HAVE TWO ENGINES GO. I WROTE GM AND GOT NO ANSWER. *JB

I WAS DRIVING MY VEHICLE WITH MY CHILDREN INSIDE AND WEBT 35 MILES AWAY FROM HOME AND MY VEHICLE SECURITY LIGHT CAME ON AND I CALLED THE DEALERS AND THEY TOLD ME I WOULD HAVE TO COME TO GET A DIAGNOSIS FOR $109.00 WELL ON MY WAY HOME MY VEHICLE SHUT DOWN DUE TO THE SECURITY LIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HIGHWAY AND IT WOULD NOT TURN BACK ON SO I GOOGLED A RESET AND RESET IT SND THE VEHICLE TURNED ON BUT AGAIN SHUT DOWN ON ME ON THE HIGHWAY. I FEEL ITS VERY DANGEROUS DRIVING AND VEHICLE SHUTD DOWN WHEN SECURITY LIGHT IS BLINKING AND A ANOTHER VEHICLE ALMOST STRUCK ME WHEN MY VEHICLE SHUT DOWN. I HAVE READ A LOT OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE SECURITY LIGHT THAT JUST APEARS FOR NO REASON AND CANT GET RID OF IT. NOT EVEN A MECHANIC CAN FIX IT , ONLY THE DEALERS THEM SELF CAN FIX IT. I HAVE A 1998 S-10 CHEVY BLAZER THAT HAS AN ABS PROBLEM. THE BRAKES ARE UNABLE TO STOP THE VEHICLE AT A SAFE DISTANCE. 90% OF THE TIME THE BRAKE PEDAL RESISTS PRESSURE BEING PUT ON IT AND PUSHES BACK. I HAD THE ABS FUSE REMOVED TO DISCONNECT THE SYSTEM AND THE PROBLEM CEASES. MY MECHANIC SAYS THE ABS SENSORS WILL HAVE TO BE REPLACED AT A COST OVER $1000.00. HAS ALL THE RECORDS. ON SEPTEMBER 14, 2005 THE BRAKES FAILED. IT HAPPENED WHEN TURNING INTO DRIVEWAY AND GOING BACK DOWN THE DRIVEWAY TOWARD THE ROAD. WAS ABLE TO STOP THE VEHICLE BY RUNNING INTO THE TREES ALONGSIDE DRIVEWAY. THE VEHICLE WAS THEN TOWED TO A GARAGE, WHERE THE CONSUMER WAS TRYING TO FIND OUT WHAT HAPPENED SO SUDDENLY. THE BRAKES HAVE BEEN REPAIRED BEFORE. ALL GM TRUCKS FROM 1999 UP HAVE BEEN RECALLED BECAUSE OF BRAKE PROBLEMS. THE CONSUMER DID NOT THINK THERE WAS ANY DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A 1999 MODEL AND A 1998 MODEL. . IT WAS DEFINITELY A LIFE THREATENING SITUATION, WHICH WAS WHY HE WAS TRYING TO CONTACT THE NATIONAL SAFETY COUNCIL.*AK THE HYDRAULIC LINES THROUGHOUT THE BRAKE SYSTEM WERE CORRODED AND REPLACED. AFTERWARDS IT WAS A STUNNING REVOLUTION TO FIND THIS OUT ABOUT THE AIRBAGS AND IT HAS LEFT ME WONDERING HOW MANY PEOPLE OUT THERE THINK THEY ARE PROTECTED WITH AIRBAGS, WHEN THEY MAY OR MAY NOT WORK ANYWAY. THE CONTACT ATTEMPTED TO APPLY THE BRAKES, BUT THE VEHICLE DID NOT STOP. AS A RESULT, THE VEHICLE CRASHED INTO THE FRONT OF A BUILDING. THE CONTACT PLACED THE VEHICLE IN REVERSE AND DROVE OUT OF THE BUILDING, BUT THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WAS STILL ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOORBOARD. THE VEHICLE EVENTUALLY STALLED. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED FOUR FRACTURED RIBS, WHICH REQUIRED MEDICAL ATTENTION. THE VEHICLE WAS PICKED UP BY A TOW TRUCK (PAID FOR BY THE MANUFACTURER) AND TOWED TO THE CONTACT'S RESIDENCE. THE CONTACT WAS AWAITING AN INVESTIGATOR TO RENDER A DIAGNOSIS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND PROVIDED CASE NUMBER: 884883. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS FAIL TO WORK PROPERLY. THEY STOP WORKING AT THE MOST INOPPORTUNE TIMES...LIKE WHEN THERE IS A RAIN FALL AND THEY ARE NEEDED FOR SAFETY AND VISIBILITY. I CONTACTED GM AND WAS TOLD THEY HAVE NOT RECEIVED ENOUGH COMPLAINTS TO WARRANT A RECALL. THE RECALL IS AVAILABLE ON 94 TO 96 MODELS. HOWEVER, THE MANUFACTURE DATE ON MY VEHICLE IS 2/17/1997. IN A TORRENTIAL RAIN FALL, GOING 50 MPH ON THE INTERSTATE, THE W/S WIPERS STOPPED, IT WAS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION, ESPECIALLY WHEN AN 18 WHEELER PASSED MY SON, WHOM WAS DRIVING AND SPLASHED EXTRA WATER ON THE VEHICLE. LUCKLY HE MAINTAINED CONTROL AND HE WAS ABLE TO PULL OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD.

2 YEARS AGO IN THE FALL, I WENT TO FIRESTONE WITH A COMPLAINT OF NO HEAT. WITH NO HEAT, THE DEFROSTERS ARE SLOW OR DO NOT CLEAR THE WINDSHIELD IN A QUICK OR SAFE MANNER. FIRESTONE REPLACED THE THERMOSTAT AND I HAD SUFFICIENT (NOT HOT LIKE IN THE PAST) HEAT UNTIL THIS PAST NOVEMBER. AGAIN WITH NO HEAT OR EFFICIENT DEFROSTERS, I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO WILSON'S AUTO SERVICE. THEY SAID MY THERMOSTAT WAS COMPLETELY OPEN--THE SPRING WAS CAUGHT. THEY PERFORMED SERVICE TO THE EXTENT OF REPLACING THE THERMOSTAT AND BACKFLUSHING THE HEATER CORE. THIS SEEMED TO HELP SOME UNTIL IT PROGRESSIVELY GOT COLDER WEATHER. LAST WEEK WHEN THE TEMPERATURE REACHED 15 DEGREES IN THE MORNING AND I LET MY VEHICLE "WARM UP" FOR 20 MINUTES, THE INTERIOR WAS STILL VERY COLD AND THE WINDSHIELD WAS BARELY CLEARED OF LIGHT FROST. WILSON'S IS NOW WORKING ON REPLACING THE HEATER CORE AT A COST TO ME TO THE TUNE OF ALMOST $800. WILSON'S SERVICE MANAGER WAS TOLD BY A FRIEND THAT WORKS OR WORKED FOR GM THAT THIS IS A COMMON COMPLAINT WITH BLAZER OWNERS AS THE DESIGN AND THE PLACEMENT OF THE HEATER CORE IN THESE VEHICLES ARE SUCH THAT WHEN THE HEATER IS NOT IN USE--LIKE IN THE SUMMER--THE CORROSION AND SEDIMENT FROM THE COOLANT CLOGS UP THE PASSAGES AND BLOCKS THE HOT AIR TO HEAT THE VEHICLE. APPARENTLY THE PART IS NOT TOO EXPENSIVE BUT THE LABOR INTENSIVE REPAIR IS THE MAJORITY OF THE COST OF REPLACING THE PART. I KNOW OF AT LEAST 2 OTHER BLAZER OWNERS--DIFFERENT MODEL YEARS--THAT HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS SAME PROBLEM AND INCURRED SIGNIFICANT COSTS AT THE RISK OF SAFE VISIBILITY. IF THIS IS A DESIGN PROBLEM FOR AT LEAST THE 3 MODEL YEARS THAT I KNOW OF AND OTHER OWNERS ARE EXPERIENCING THIS SAME PROBLEM, THEN WHY HASN'T THIS DESIGN BEEN CORRECTED AND/OR REPAIRS COMPENSATED FOR?

1998 CHEVY S-10 BLAZER WITH 97K MILES AND THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS WORKED INTERMITTENTLY. I BELIEVE THIS TO BE A SOLDER FATIGUE PROBLEM DUE TO VIBRATION AND TEMPERATURE CYCLING AND THE FACT THAT THE HARNESS CONNECTOR BODY IS LONG AND MADE OF A DIFFERENT MATERIAL THAN THE CIRCUIT CARD LEAVING THE SOLDER JOINTS UNDER STRESS DUE TO MISMATCH OF THERMAL EXPANSION COEFFICIENTS. CONSEQUENTLY, AFTER TEN YEARS THE SOLDER JOINTS FINALLY GAVE UP. THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT THE CIRCUIT CARD IS EASY TO REMOVE (3 TORQUE SCREWS) AND THE SOLDER JOINTS CAN BE SIMPLY REFLOWED WITH A SOLDERING IRON AND FRESH SOLDER. WE WERE RECENTLY IN AN AUTO ACCIDENT. THOUGH WE WERE ONLY GOING ABOUT 30 MPH OUR CHILD'S ANCHOR STRAP RIPPED FREE FROM THE SCREW THAT SECURED THE STRAP TO THE CAR SEAT BASE. WE HAVE A 2 YEAR OLD BOY THAT SLID THE CHEST HARNESS APART. (IT IS EASY) TO TAKE OFF HIS CHEST PROTECTOR IN THE CAR SEAT. HE WAS SITTING IN THE BACK SEAT OF THE CAR BEACUSE OF FRONT AIR BAGS. HE THEN ROLLED DOWN THE WINDOW BECAUSE I FORGOT TO LOCK THE WINDOWS OUT AGAIN. HE THEN HAD HIS HEAD AND SHOULDERS OUT THE WINDOW. ALL THIS HAPPENED IN A MATTER OF SECONDS. I HAD TO PULL THE VEHICLE OVER AND HAVE MY OLDER SON SIT IN THE BACK WITH HIM. THE CHEST CLIP ON THE COSCO TOURIVA SLIDS APART ON ONE SIDE EASILY. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1998 CHEVROLET BLAZER. WHILE DEPRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL FROM APPROXIMATELY 2-5 MPH, THE VEHICLE FAILED TO IMMEDIATELY STOP. AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC REPLACED THE BRAKE SYSTEM, BUT THE FAILURE STILL REMAINED. IN ADDITION, THE WIPER BLADES WIRING MECHANISM DID NOT WORK EFFECTIVELY. FIRST THE ABS WARNING LIGHT STARTED ILLUMINATING EVERY SO OFTEN STARTING IN 2002, NOW THE WIPERS HAVE BECOME VERY ERRATIC. IT HAS NOW GOTTEN SO BAD THAT IT HAS BECOME A SAFETY HAZARD. IT DOES NOT MATTER WHAT SETTING ( DELAY, SLOW OR FAST) THE WIPERS ARE SET AT THEY REACT ON THEIR OWN. SOMETIMES THEY STOP COMPLETELY WHICH CAUSES A SEVERE SAFETY HAZARD WHEN DRIVING IN THE RAIN. YOU COULD HAVE THE SETTING ON SLOW DELAY AND THEY WILL BEGIN GOING VERY FAST OR MEDIUM SPEED, THEN CHANGE AGAIN FOR NO REASON. THEY ALSO CONTINUE TO RUN WHEN THE SWITCH IS TURNED COMPLETELY OFF. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1998 CHEVROLET BLAZER. WHILE DRIVING 50 MPH, THE CONTACT HEARD A LOUD BANGING SOUND AND DISCOVERED THAT THE REAR PASSENGER SIDE TIRE DETACHED FROM THE VEHICLE. 1998 CHEVY BLAZER WITH TIRE FAILURE. CONSUMER STATES THAT THE TIRES BLEW OUT AND WHEN HE WENT TO GET THEM REPLACED THE MECHANIC SAID THEY WERE DRY ROTTED. HE SAID THE BRAKES ENGAGED ON HIS WAY HOME. *KB THE CONSUMER STATED THE BRAKE AND ABS LIGHT ILLUMINATED AND THE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. THE REAR BRAKES WERE REPLACED. VEHICLE: 1998 CHEVY BLAZER 4DR 4X4 4.3L VORTEC V6 EVENTS LEADING UP TO FAILURE: NORMAL DRIVING CONDITIONS FAILURE(S): THERE ARE TWO PRIMARY CONCERNS WITH THIS VEHICLE: 1) FUEL GAUGE DOES NOT WORK, IT WILL REPORT COMPLETE FULL AND WHEN VARYING AMOUNTS OF FUEL THE FUEL GAUGE BOUNCES AROUND(USUALLY BETWEEN HALF AND FULL, BUT SOMETIMES BETWEEN E AND FULL) I AM FORCED TO USE TRIP ODOMETER AND APPROXIMATE FUEL ECONOMY TO DETERMINE TANK LEVEL. I HAVE HEARD SEVERAL TO MANY ANECDOTAL STORIES OF OTHER CHEVY VEHICLES EXPERIENCING THE SAME SYMPTOMS. 2) THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS WORK SPORADICALLY. CURRENTLY WHEN OPERATING IN 'INTERMITTENT' MODE, THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS WILL BEGIN TO OPERATE IN CONTINUOUS, REGULAR SPEED AND WILL NOT TURN OFF WHEN SWITCH TURNED TO 'OFF' POSITION. SITUATION WILL OCCASIONALLY CORRECT ITSELF AFTER SEVERAL MINUTES. OTHER TIMES I AM REQUIRED TO STOP, PARK, AND TURN OFF THE VEHICLE BEFORE RESTARTING IT TO TURN THE WIPERS OFF. OCCASIONALLY THE WIPERS WILL NOT WORK AT ALL IN ANY POSITION. USUALLY THIS ONLY HAPPENS FOR A SHORT PERIODS OF TIME, WHILE I AM TRYING TO TURN THEM ON BY SCRUBBING THROUGH ALL THE POSITIONS OF THE SWITCH. I OWNED A 95 GMC JIMMY PRIOR TO THIS VEHICLE AND EXPERIENCED THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM. THIS MODEL YEAR WAS COVERED UNDER A RECALL THAT ENDED WITH, I BELIEVE, THE 97 MODEL YEAR. CORRECTIONS/REPAIRS: I HAVE HAD NEITHER PROBLEM REPAIRED. THEREFORE, I STILL HAVE THE OLD PARTS. MY WIFE AND I HAVE HAD TO MAKE MAJOR REPAIRS TO OUR 1998 BLAZER. WE HAD TO REPLACE THE WATER PUMP ($294.55) IN OCTOBER 2002. THEN, THE TRANSMISSION STARTED SLIPPING AND GOT WORSE. WE TOOK IT TO AAMCO, WHERE WE WERE INFORMED THAT IT HAD TO BE REBUILT. THIS WAS IN JULY OF 2002. THE TOTAL COST WAS ($2077.37). I INQUIRED THAT SAME MONTH AT CHEVROLET ABOUT RECALLS, AND THEY SAID THAT THERE WERE NONE. I RECENTLY HAD TO REPLACE THE BALL JOINTS AND IDLER ARM ON MY 1998 CHEVROLET BLAZER. I WAS ADVISED BY THE DEALERSHIP THAT THIS IS A CONSTANT PROBLEM. I DO NOT UNDERSTAND THAT IF THE MANUFACTURER KNOWS THAT THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE STEERING COMPONENTS BECOMING DEFECTIVE, THEN WHY DON'T THEY SOLVE THE PROBLEM. THIS IS THE THIRD SET OF BALLJOINTS THAT HAVE NEEDED TO BE INSTALEDL ON THE VEHICLE. THE FIRST SET ALONG WITH THE PITMAN ARM WENT DEFECTIVE AT 29,000 MILES AND THE DEALERSHIP REPLACED THEM UNDER THE MANUFACTURES WARRANTY.

THEN WHEN MOTOR TURNED OFF AND ON AGAIN THEY WORKED, THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING ON AND OFF SINCE THAT TIME, BUT TODAY 06/26/2004 THEY JUST STOPPED ALL TOGETHER - NOTHING HELPED. HAD TO HAVE THE SAME SOLDERING REPAIR DONE AS IN THE 1995 -1997 CHEVROLET S-10 / BLAZERS - WHICH I MIGHT ADD WAS A RECALL. THE SAME PARTS ARE USED IN MOST 1998'S AS WELL. FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR DOES NOT LATCH DUE TO THE BODY OF THE STRIKE PLATE ON DRIVER'S SIDE CAVING IN. *AK THERE WAS A CRACK AROUND THE STICKER PLATE. I HAVE HAD THIS VEHICLE ALIGNED AND TIRES BALANCED THREE TIMES IN TEN MONTHS - ONE WAS A FORCED BALANCE AT A COST OF $160.00. THE FUEL INJECTORS LEAKED ONTO THE MAIN WIRING HARNESS INSIDE THE ENGINE. ALL OF THE WIRES MELTED. THREE DIFFERENT MECHANICS CONFIRMED THAT THIS SHOULD NEVER HAVE HAPPENED AND COULD HAVE CAUSED A FIRE. I WAS REFERED TO GENERAL MOTORS. ESTIMATED REPAIRS FOR $1600.00 INCLUDE REPLACEMENT OF THE WIRING HARNESS, FUEL INJECTORS, FUEL REGULATOR KIT, FUEL BODY KIT AND UPPER INTAKE GASKET. GM HAS AGREED TO PAY 50% OF THE BILL.
