IGNITION SWITCH AND THE IGNITION LOCK CYLINDER MALFUNCTIONED IN 2009, ROUGHLY FIVE YEARS AFTER GM'S RECALL. THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF THE VEHICLE TOOK ADVANTAGE OF THE IGNITION SWITCH'S SERVICE. IN ADDITION TO THE RECALL, GM INSTALLED AN IGNITION WIRING HARNESS. BACK IN 2009, THE VEHICLE'S IGNITION WOULD OVERTURN, AND THEN, THE ENGINE WOULD AUTOMATICALLY SHUT-OFF. TO REPAIR THE PROBLEM, BOTH THE IGNITION SWITCH AND LOCK CYLINDER WERE REPLACED AT A COST OF $492. IN 2014, THE IGNITION SWITCH MALFUNCTIONS. THIS TIME, IT APPEARS THE IGNITION LOCK CYLINDER TO BE WORKING PROPERLY. THE IGNITION SWITCH BECAME DAMAGE DUE TO CURRENT FLOW TO THE IGNITION WHEN HOLDING THE KEY IN THE START POSITION. THE HEAT MELTED THE INTERNAL SWITCH. I HAD NOT KNOWN IN 2014 THAT THE PROBLEM WAS THE IGNITION SWITCH. IN THE SAME YEAR, HOWEVER, GM RECALLED A MASSIVE NUMBER OF VEHICLES FOR IGNITION SWITCH DEFECT. CHEVROLET CAVALIER WAS NOT ON THE LIST. TODAY, IT COSTS $180.00, EXCLUDING TAXES AND FEES, TO GET THE IGNITION SWITCH INSTALLED BY A CHEVROLET TECHNICIAN. A LOCKSMITH RATE STARTS AT $90 BUT DOES NOT INCLUDE SERVICE FEE, AND LABOR. BASED ON FEW ONLINE REPORTS, THE INSTALLATION TAKES A MINIMUM OF 20 MINUTES. WOULD INSTALLED THE IGNITION SWITCH MYSELF BUT CANNOT LOCATE STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS. ALL THE CHEVROLET MANUALS OWNED DO NOT PROVIDE INSTRUCTIONS ON REPLACING THE IGNITION SWITCH. IF I DO INSTALL THE IGNITION SWITCH, I AM UNSURE IF THE VEHICLE'S COMPUTER WILL NEED REPROGRAMMING. A FEW REPORTS MADE REFERENCE TO REPROGRAMMING THE VEHICLE'S COMPUTER FOLLOWING THE CHANGING OF THE IGNITION SWITCH. SOLUTION: I THINK GM NEEDS TO ADD CHEVROLET CAVALIER TO THE "RECALL" LIST. THE ALTERNATIVE, IGNITION WIRING HARNESS DOES NOT SUPPORT THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM ENTIRELY WHEN THE CHARGING SYSTEM LIGHT REMAINS ON THE DASHBOARD.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNED A 2001 CHEVROLET CAVALIER. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 25 MPH, THE VEHICLE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. AS A RESULT, ANOTHER VEHICLE CRASHED INTO THE DRIVER SIDE OF THE CONTACT'S VEHICLE. THE AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED A BACK INJURY, THE REAR DRIVER SIDE PASSENGER SUSTAINED BODY AND HEAD INJURIES, THE REAR MIDDLE PASSENGER SUSTAINED A HEAD INJURY AND THE REAR MIDDLE PASSENGER SUSTAINED BODY INJURIES. THE INJURIES REQUIRED MEDICAL ATTENTION. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN.

IN ADDITION, THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE IGNITION KEY WAS SLIPPING IN AND OUT OF THE IGNITION. AS A RESULT, THE INTERIOR LIGHT WAS TURNING ON AND OFF. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 13,000.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 CHEVROLET CAVALIER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE KEY WAS DIFFICULT TO TURN WHEN INSERTED INTO THE IGNITION SWITCH, PREVENTING THE VEHICLE FROM BEING STARTED. THE VEHICLE WAS STARTED AFTER THE CONTACT ATTEMPTED TO TURN THE KEY TO THE START POSITION SEVERAL TIMES. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, WHO REPLACED THE IGNITION SWITCH. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 85,610 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 85,615.

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 CHEVROLET CAVALIER. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH, THE CONTACT HEARD A POPPING SOUND AND FELT SOMETHING DROP FROM THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE STOPPED AND WOULD NOT MOVE; THEREFORE, IT HAD TO BE TOWED. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 47,675 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 47,525.

I WAS DRIVING AT 40 MILE PH AND ALL OF A SUDDEN THE CAR HESITATED ACTED LIKE IT COULDN'T GET INTO GEAR -THE TRACK OFF LIGHT WAS ON-I WAS DRIVING ON FLAT SURFACE NO WET CONDITIONS THIS HAPPENED MORE THEN TEN TIMES. HAD CAR LOOKED AT BY MECHANIC COULD NOT EXPLAIN IT RESETS AFTER TURNING OFF CAR AND STARTING IT UP AGAIN IT WAS CHECKED ON COMPUTER FOUND NO PROBLEM BUT ON LAST TIME THE CAR DIED AS I WAS DRIVING INTO THE REPAIR SHOP IT WAS AGAIN CHECK AND THE REPAIR MAN SHOWED ME THAT HE SHOULDN'T GET ANY INFO BECAUSE IT WASN'T SENDING INFO TO HIS COMPUTER. THIS SCARES ME I DRIVE MY TWO YOUNG CHILDREN TO SCHOOL IN THIS CAR .IT IS STILL DRIVABLE BUT FOR SHORT DISTANCES. I I HAVE CONTACTED MANUFACTURER THEY SAY THEY HAVE NO INFO ON THIS HAPPENING TO ANYONE ELSE. THIS CAR HAS BEEN A LEMON SINCE I BOUGHT IT. IT HAD 14 MILES ON IT AT PURCHASE. BEFORE IT HAD 5,000 MILES, THE STRUT MOUNTS HAD TO BE REPLACED TWICE. WHEN IT HIT CLOSE TO 60,000 MILES THE TRAC OFF/ CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS KEPT COMING ON. I WENT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY REPLACED SOME COMPONENT IN THE FUEL SYSTEM TO PACIFY ME BUT STATED IT HAD TO DO WITH THE GAS CAP NOT BEING ON RIGHT. NOT THE PROBLEM AT ALL BECAUSE I COMPLAINED TO CHEVROLET AND THEY REPLACED THIS PIECE YET AGAIN (WAS REPLACED BEFORE) AND I DROVE IT OUT OF THE DEALERSHIP TO NC AND IT HAPPENED AGAIN ON THE WAY DOWN THERE. WHEN THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON, SHORTLY AFTER THE TRAC OFF LIGHT COMES ON AND IT MAKES A NOISE LIKE THE TRANSMISSION IS READY TO FALL OUT OF IT. SEEMS THE PROBLEMS START WHEN YOU'RE TRYING TO CLIMB A HILL WHICH TO ME HAS NEVER SOUNDED LIKE A PROBLEM WITH THE GAS CAP! NOW IT'S COMPLETELY OUT OF WARRANTLY, AND I REFUSE TO DRIVE IT BECAUSE I'M AFRAID IT'S GONNA DIE ON ME SOMEWHERE. HUBBY DRIVES IT LOCALLY AND HE'S GOTTA SHIFT IT INTO SECOND OR THIRD TO TRY TO KEEP IT FROM DOING THAT. SOMETIMES IT WORKS, SOMETIMES IT DOESN'T. YOU CAN'T USE THE CRUISE CONTROL BECAUSE IT AUTOMATICALLY KICKS THE LIGHTS ON BECAUSE THE TRANSMISSION CAN'T STAY AT AN EVEN KIEL. WHEN YOU GO TO STOP, YOU HAVE TO PUT IT IN PARK, SHUT OFF THE ENGINE, WAIT A MINUTE, TURN IT ON, PUT IT IN SECOND AND THEN GO. THE TRAC OFF LIGHT THEN GOES OFF AND SOMETIMES THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT GOES OFF TOO. (50/50 CHANCE OF THAT ONE). THE RPM GUAGE FOREVER REVS UP TO 4-5 WHICH ALSO KICKS ON THE LIGHTS. I DONT' KNOW. ANYONE CONSIDERING PURCHASING THIS CAR BETTER RUN NOT WALK TO A FOREIGN CAR DEALERSHIP AND BUY SOMETHING TRUSTWORTHY. I JUST BOUGHT A NEW CAR. TOYOTA COROLLA S AND I'M EXTREMELY HAPPY! NO MORE CHEVROLET CAVALIER'S FOR ME! THIS CAR HAS BEEN A LEMON SINCE I BOUGHT IT. I FEEL CHEVROLET AND THE DEALERSHIP PACIFIED ME ITL IT WAS OUT OF WARRANTY AND THEN SAID, "TOO BAD!". I HAVE NOT DRIVEN IT SINCE, SAVE TO GET $3,000 ESTIMATE AND SEVERAL OPINIONS, THAT A CONNECTING ROD IS DEFECTIVE, MAKING THE ENGINE VALULESS, WHICH ALL CONCUR THIS IS COMMON FOR THIS ENGINE, AND GM MAY HAVE KNOWN OF THIS PROBLEM FOR YEARS, AND DONE NOTHING.

I BOUGHT A BRAND NEW 2001 CAVALIER COUPE 2 DOOR BACK IN 2001. I HAVE APPROX. 48,000 MILES ON MY CAR. WHENEVER I GO TO THE DEALERSHIP WITH A PROBLEM CONCERNING MY CAR I SAY TO THEM, THE MANY NOISES OF THE CAVALIER AND MANY MORE TO COME. IT'S TO THE POINT WHERE I'M SO TIRED OF GOING TO THE DEALERSHIP BECAUSE THEY CAN NEVER FIND THE PROBLEM. THIS YEAR AROUND JANUARY 2005, MY BRAKES STARTED MAKING THIS AWFUL GRINDING NOISE ALONG WITH VIBRATING AND MY STEERING WHEEL WAS MAKING THIS KLUNKING/POPING NOISE THAT I COULD FEEL IN THE STEERING WHEEL. THE STEERING WHEEL HAD ME SO SCARED THAT IT WAS GOING TO FALL OFF THAT I BROUGHT IT RIGHT AWAY TO THE DEALERSHIP. THEY TOLD ME THAT THE GRINDING NOISE FROM THE BRAKES AND ALSO THE POPING NOISE IN THE STEERING WHEEL WAS DUE TO THE COLD WEATHER AND NOT TO WORRY ABOUT IT. I BROUGHT MY CAR BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP, ABOUT A WEEK AGO, THE WEATHER IS NICE NOW, BECAUSE THE STEERING WHEEL IS GETTING WORSE AND I'M SCARED THAT SOMETHING IS GOING TO HAPPEN. THEY ASSURED ME THAT IT'S FINE, MY STEERING WHEEL WON'T FALL OFF, THAT LITTLE THINGS WILL START TO HAPPEN AS YOUR CAR GETS OLDER. THEY SAID THAT THEY COULD LUBE IT BUT THAT THAT WON'T NECESSARILY MAKE THE KLUNKING/POPPING STOP. AND THE BRAKES, THEY SAID ONCE AGAIN, THEY ARE FINE. I'M ESPECIALLY SCARED ABOUT MY STEERING WHEEL PROBLEM AND THE BRAKE PROBLEM ALSO. CAR HAS A BROKEN STRUT OR STRUT MOUNT IN THE REAR. WE CALLED FOR A BOOST, AND THE AAA DRIVER TOLD US IT WASN'T OUR BATTERY BUT OUR FUEL PUMP. HOWEVER, SINCE IT WAS A 2001 CAR WE DIDN'T BELIEVE IT. WHEN WE ASKED VARIOUS MECHANICS ABOUT THE COST OF FIXING THE FUEL PUMP ON OUR CAVALIER THEY SAID IT COULDN'T BE THE PROBLEM SINCE IT WAS SO NEW. HOWEVER, IT WAS. THIS CAUSED ME AND MY FAMILY EXCESSIVE TROUBLE IN HAVING TO DEAL WITH THE LOSS OF THE CAR FOR THE FEW DAYS IT TOOK TO GET IT REPAIRED. WE EVENTUALLY HAD TO SHELL OUT NEARLY $640 TO FIX IT. SINCE PURCHASING THE 2001 CHEVROLET CAVALIER, LET ME TELL YOU, IT HAS TRULY BEEN LIKE A ROCK THROWN IN THE WATER. LESS THAN 3000 MILES ON THE CAR AND I HAD TO BRING THE CAR IN TO THE DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD THAT THE ALTERNATOR WAS DEFECTIVE. THE CAR ALMOST DIED ON ME ON THE ROAD WHILE MAKING A LEFT TURN ACROSS TWO LANES OF TRAFFIC. I WAS LATE FOR WORK, AND I WAS STUCK IN THE WAL-MART PARKING LOT FOR FOUR HOURS. I FINALLY GOT OVER THAT. OF COURSE, I DIDN'T TAKE OUT THE EXTENDED WARRANTY, WHICH IF I HAD KNOWN THAT WHEN I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE THAT I WAS GETTING A LEMON, I DEFINITELY WOULD HAVE BEEN A TRUE SOUR PUSS AND BOUGHT A FORD. RECENTLY I HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE FUEL, NOT ONLY DOES IT NOT GET GOOD GAS MILEAGE THAT IT SHOULD, I WAS RECENTLY TOLD THAT THE FUEL PUMP INSIDE THE GAS TANK FAILED. $643.77 LATER, I HAVE MY LEMON BACK, AFTER NOT HAVING A CAR FOR WORK FOR A FULL WEEK. THE DEALERSHIPS AROUND MY AREA WERE SOLD OUT OF THE FUEL PUMPS, WHEN TALKING TO SEVERAL PARTS SALESMAN, I WAS TOLD THAT THEY HAD A RUN ON FUEL PUMPS DUE TO THEIR FAILURES, THEY SELL SEVERAL PER WEEK. MY CAR SINCE I BOUGHT IT(2001 Z24 CAVALIER) HAS GIVEN ME PROBLEM AFTER PROBLEM. PISTON RODS FAILING, FUEL PUMP LEAKING, CRANKSHAFT FAILURE, GEAR BOX BENT CAUSING ME TO ONLY START CAR IN NEUTRAL AND CAN'T PARK ON HILLS. ALSO... VALVES HAVE BROKEN NUMEROUS TIMES, ENGINE ACCELERATES ON ITS OWN, FUEL GAUGE WAS BROKEN, POWER STEERING PUMP LEAKING, SUNROOF SHATTERED ON ME... EVERYTHING HAS BROKEN ON THIS BRAND NEW CAR I BOUGHT. THE DEALERSHIP WILL NOT HELP ME EVEN UNDER WARRANTY... I GOT A LEMON AND THEY WANT ME TO KEEP IT. SO MANY PROBLEMS I CANT LIST THEM ALL... AT 35,500 MILES FRONT STEERING STARTED MAKING A POPPING NOISE WHILE TURNING CORNERS. A FEW DAYS LATER, THE ABS LIGHT CAME ON AND WOULD NOT RESET. CAR WAS TAKEN TO DEALERSHIP WHERE THE ABS MASTER COMPUTER WAS REPLACED. AND STEERING WAS LUBED. AT 37,000 MILES POPPING CAME BACK, DEALERSHIP SAID THAT SINCE IT WAS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY, THEY WERE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR IT. ALSO, AT 45,000 MILES THE BRAKES WERE SHAKING, AFTER INVESTIGATION, MECHANIC STATED THAT ROTORS WERE WARPED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED.
