Power steering dashboard light came on. Difficult to steer vehicle. Losing power steering is dangerous. Will report the matter to the Chevrolet dealership. No other inspections were done. The dealership may inspect the vehicle. Trying to find recalls to fix this problem for free, but it looks like Chevrolet has not provided a recall for this problem although there are numerous complaints about the failed power steering in their HHR vehicles.

While driving down the interstate the power steering light flashed and locked the power steering to the point I was unable to steer in any direction. It has done this on multiple occasions to the point it has almost caused several accidents. This is a serious issue!

Power steering went out completely causing me to swerve on the highway to side of road. The steering locked up and it was raining and I would of crashed had anyone else been on the highway. I was going about 55 mph at the time. I then proceeded to CAREFULLY at about 30 mph force my car to drive another half mile to nearest exit ramp. The entire time I was driving in the middle of the lanes and a huge liability as far as safety is concerned. Thankfully I made it with no harm to myself vehicle or anyone else. I pulled over to side of road and slept in car till the rain stopped. Prior to this I backed into a fence when the steering failed backing into a carport resulting in body damage to front end under left headlight. Months before I had asked the Chevy dealership to diagnose issue and they found nothing wrong as in the beginning the car would still steer at its own leisure. The light didn't come on when they looked at it. After the night in the rain I have taken the fuse outta the power steering part and just manually steer. This should be replaced as it is a common issue to ALL HHR. Mine isn't covered as it is an SS but clearly it should be covered by a recall. Hopefully I don't die before this is taken care of.

FUEL LINE LEAKING IN TWO PLACES, IN THE REAR AND IN THE FRONT. COMPLETELY RUSTED OUT. MY CAR ONLY HAS 60,800 MILES ON IT. TYPE OF CAR IS A 2008 CHEVY HHR LT 2.4. GAS IS LEAKING ON THE GROUND AND A STRONG SMELL OF GAS IS EMITTED FROM THE CAR. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS BECAUSE THE CAR COULD CATCH FIRE. I DID NOT THINK THIS WOULD HAPPEN TO MY CAR WITH SO FEW MILES ON THE CAR. I DID NOT KNOW THERE WAS A PROBLEM AND DROVE THE CAR 130 MILES AWAY FROM HOME TO MY DAD'S FUNERAL. THEN I HAD TO DRIVE IT BACK BECAUSE TH E TOW WOULD HAVE BEEN $700. THE MECHANIC WHO INSPECTED THE CAR. BUDDY LLOYD'S LAKEVIEW AUTOMOTIVE AT 4757 SANG RUN ROAD IN MCENRY, MD 21541, SAID IT WOULD COST ABOUT $2,000 TO FIX BECAUSE OF THE EXTENT OF THE CORROSION AND THE CHAEP MATERIALS USED. IN ADDITION, THE FUEL LINES ARE LOCATED UNDERNEATH OTHER MAJOR PARTS AND WOULD HAVE TO BE TAKEN OFF TO GET TO THE FUEL LINES. THE MECHANIC SAID AT ANY MOMENT IF I HIT A BUMP THAT THE GAS COULD EMPTY THE TANK AND POSSIBLY CATCH FIRE!

2008 HHR Chevy LS 4D. Within 10 months of purchasing this car (October, 2017) the smell of gasoline became so strong I took it to the local mechanic. The fuel line had completely rusted out. I was told it could have caught fire! Cost of replacement was $420.00. A huge financial burden for a senior citizen. I have original bill for this amount and receipt of payment.

FOR THE THIRD TIME SINCE PURCHASING THIS VEHICLE, I HAVE HAD TO HAVE THE BRAKE ROTORS TURNED DUE TO WARPING. HAD THE PADS REPLACED WITH LIFETIME PADS LAST YEAR. THE WOBBLE CAUSED BY THIS WARPING CAUSES DANGER TO DRIVER, PASSENGERS, AND OTHERS DUE TO DIFFICULTY IN CONTROLLING THE VEHICLE.

BRAKES SHUDDER IN FRONT WHEN MODERATE APPLICATION AT HIGHWAY SPEED 120KPH - DEALER FIX IS HAVING ROTORS MACHINED BUT EVERY TIME THEY DO THAT THEY GET THINNER AND HEAT UP QUICKER THEREFORE WARP QUICKER. THIS TIME THEY HAD TO REPLACE ROTORS AND MACHINED REAR DRUM BECAUSE I LITERALLY HAD TO YOU USE THE PARKING BRAKE TO STOP ON THE HIGHWAY TO GET BACK HOME FROM OUR TRIP. The contact owns a 2008 Chevrolet HHR. The contact stated while driving at approximately 35 MPH, the air bag warning light illuminated. The service air bag soon message was displayed. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed that two unknown modules were defective and needed to be replaced. The dealer informed the contact that the modules were no longer manufactured. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, but no assistance was provided. Needless to say, General Motors has dealt with their share of recalls lately and while much of the GM recall news has been devoted to the ignition failures which have forced new CEO Mary Barra to stand before the US Government, this new recall has nothing to do with the ignition cylinder failures. Although the ignition problems can cause a steering issue and some of the vehicles included in the ignition recall are also included in this new recall, this recall pertains specifically to the power steering system. It seems that in the 1.3 million affected vehicles, one or more components of the electric power steering assist system could fail and when that happens, the car will not have the same level of power assist. The General Motors statement announcing this recall is a bit on the vague side in terms of explaining exactly what is causing this loss of power assist, but the automaker has explained that it could be due to a problem with the power steering motor, the steering column assembly, the power steering control unit or a combination of the power steering column and the power steering control unit. Regardless of which of those components fail, it will become much more difficult to steer the car at low speeds, although when driving at higher speeds it may almost be unnoticeable. However, with the increased possibility of accidents, GM isn’t taking any chances so they have made the decision to add these 1.3 million cars to their already lengthy list of recalled models. THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT AS WE WERE DEALING WITH A STARTER ISSUE. IT INDICATED ONLY ONCE ON THE DASH THAT THERE MIGHT BE SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE POWER STEERING. NOW IT'S COMPLETELY GONE. THE DASH DOESN'T SHOW ANY INFORMATION THAT THERE COULD BE AN ISSUE. IT'S VERY HARD TO TAKE TURNS. BOTH WIDE OR TIGHT. IT TAKES A LOT OF STRENGTH TO GET THE STEERING WHEEL TO MOVE. IF I DRIVE IT, MOVING FROM LANE TO LANE IS DIFFICULT. I NOW HAVE IT BACK IN THE SHOP FOR THE MECHANIC TO CHECK IT OUT AND RUN A DIAGNOSTIC TEST ON THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM.

WHENEVER I AM DRIVING, THE STEERING WHEEL WILL SUDDENLY LOCK UP FOR SEEMINGLY NO REASON. I CAN BE GO ANYWHERE FROM 35 MPH TO 70 MPH. IT'S CAUSED ME TO NEARLY GET INTO MULTIPLE WRECKS. I'M FORCED TO PULL OVER, TURN OFF THE CAR, AND TURN IT BACK ON AND THEN THE WHEEL IS PERFECTLY FINE AFTER. IT HAPPENS IN THE MIDDLE OF DRIVING. I'M SCARED TO KEEP DRIVING THIS CAR BUT IT'S MY ONLY WAY TO WORK EVERY DAY. I HAVE NO CHOICE. MY CAR DEALERSHIP HAS SAID MANY HHR'S HAVE BEEN RECALLED IN THE PAST DUE TO POWER STEERING ISSUES. PLEASE HELP ME KNOW IF MY CAR NEEDS TO BE RECALLED AND WHAT I NEED TO DO TO KEEP SAFE. THIS HAPPENS NEARLY EVERY DAY I DRIVE IT, I'VE ONLY OWNED THE CAR FOR ABOUT A MONTH NOW.

IT TOOK AWHILE FOR ME TO FIGURE OUT THAT I HAVE TO WATCH THE LATCH WHEN I LOCK IT AND IF IT DOES NOT GO DOWN ALL THE WAY, I HAVE TO UNLOCK AND LOCK AGAIN AND PULL THE LATCH UP AND THEN LOCK THE DRIVER DOOR FROM THE OUTSIDE. I HAVE MANAGED TO SIMPLY SWITCH AROUND FUSES/RELAYS OF THE SAME MODEL NUMBER TO GET BOTH RUNNING AND DIM LIGHTS TO WORK. THE BRIGHT LIGHTS HAVE NOT WORKED IN ALMOST A YEAR. PROBLEMS OCCUR WHEN CAR IS STARTED FROM A STATIONARY POSITION. I HAVE HAD THE FUSES/RELAYS TESTED AT AN INDEPENDENT AUTO PARTS STORE AND WAS TOLD THEY ARE FINE AFTER BUYING REPLACEMENTS ON TWO OCCASIONS. THIS MATTER NEEDS TO BE THE TOPIC OF A RECALL AS IT IS A SERIOUS SAFETY HAZARD TO NOT HAVE BRIGHT LIGHTS, RUNNING LIGHTS AND ESPECIALLY HEADLIGHTS. THE CAR IS A 2008 AND TWICE THE EXHAUST "FLEX" HOSE WHICH IS JUST BEYOND THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD AND IN FRONT OF THE CATALYTIC CONVERTERS HAS RUSTED AND DEVELOPED LEAKS. BECAUSE OF THE PROXIMITY OF THE PART CLOSE TO THE ENGINE, NOT ONLY DO THE EXHAUST FUMES RISE UP INTO THE PASSENGER CABIN BUT IT SOUNDS LIKE LARGE DIESEL TRUCK. THE DEALER WILL NOT REPLACE ONLY THE FLEX HOSE AND WILL ONLY REPLACE THE ENTIRE PIPE BACK FROM THE MANIFOLD WHICH INCLUDES 2 CATALYTIC CONVERTERS FOR AROUND $2000. I PULLED OVER TO THE CURB AND TRIED TO SHUT THAT DOOR. IT WOULD NOT STAY SHUT. EVEN THE AAA AUTO CLUB ROADSIDE SERVICE WAS UNABLE TO GET THE DOOR TO STAY CLOSED. THAT LATCH WAS MOVABLE WITH FINGERS, NOT LIKE THE OTHERS, WHICH COULD NOT BE MOVED WITHOUT ACTUALLY USING SOMETHING TO ASSIST, I.E., SCREWDRIVER, DOOR HANDLE, ETC. THE LEFT REAR POWER DOOR LOCK ACTUATOR IS INOPERATIVE. THE REAR DOOR CAN NOT BE OPENED ( FROM OUTSIDE OR INSIDE) EITHER WITH POWER ASSIST OR MANUALLY PULLING THE LOCK PLUNGER. I HAVE TO USE PLIERS GRABBING THE DOOR LOCK PLUNGERS ( PULLING UPWARD) TO FORCE THE LOCK OPEN ALLOWING ME TO OPEN REAR DOOR (EXCESSIVE FORCE REQUIRED ALONG WITH SOMEONE PUSHING THE POWER DOOR LOCK SWITCH SIMULTANEOUSLY). ONCE IN THE LOCKED CONDITION YOU CAN NOT OPERATE THE DOOR FROM EITHER THE INSIDE OR OUTSIDE. REAR SEAT OCCUPANTS WOULD BE TRAPPED IN BACK SEAT WITHOUT BEING ABLE TO EXIT THE VEHICLE. THE DOOR LOCKS STICK AND STILL DO. I HAVE EVEN BEEN LOCKED IN MY VEHICLE. HHR HAS BEEN IN DEALER 9 TIMES FOR DOOR LOCKS STICKING (HAVE WORK ORDERS). DON'T TRUST DEALER OR GM TO FIX PROBLEM. YOU PUT VEHICLE IN PARK AND THE PASSENGER DOOR LOCK STICKS. THE DOOR LOCK WILL NOT UNLOCK WITH AUTOMATIC DOOR UN LOCK. WE WORKED HARD TO PURCHASE A NEW VEHICLE TO HAVE IT NOT LIVE UP TO THE QUALITY WE WERE LEAD IT TO BE. VEHICLES NO COUNT WE WANT OUR MONEY BACK. vehicle ecm keeps reporting an error code p2138 that refers to a correlation issue between sensors on the throttle/pedal system, causing the vehicle to enter into reduced power and eventually disables engine. Problem persists even after replacing pedal component. Apparently water enters the compartment where the part is located and corrodes wiring between the ecm and the pedal system. GM is apparently aware but so far has done nothing. Problem is especially hazardous because engine power is reduced during acceleration and happens without warning. Vehicle could be in high density traffic and then suddenly experiences lack of power or total disability, and driver must try to navigate to the side of the road--not always possible or safe to do.

VEHICLE IN MENTION, CHEVY HHR 2008, SUDDEN ACCELERATION GOING DOWN FREEWAY REACHING 80 MPH. RPM'S WENT UP TO 6 AND STAYED FOR OVER 7 MINUTES. THE VEHICLE ALMOST HIT ANOTHER VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME DUE TO NO WHERE FOR ME TO TURN. I SLOWED THE VEHICLE DOWN BY ENGAGING NEUTRAL AND CONTINUE BREAKING. THE BREAKS WERE PUSHED TO THE FLOOR. MY RIGHT FOOT WAS IMMEDIATELY TAKEN OFF WHEN SUDDEN ACCELERATION OCCURRED. I DID NOT HAVE MANY OPTIONS ON A TWO LANE NORTHBOUND FREEWAY 101 IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA. I COULD TURN TO THE RIGHT AND GO DOWN AN EMBANKMENT OR TURN LEFT AND HIT MEDIAN AND ANOTHER VEHICLE OR KEEP GOING FORWARD AND RAM THE VEHICLE IN FRONT. THE CAR WAS STILL ACCELERATING IN PARK WHEN I FINALLY STOPPED. THE ENGINE WAS STILL REVVED UP AND RPM'S AT 6 STILL. I DID TURN CAR OFF AND STARTED AGAIN AND CAR WAS STILL REVVED UP, VERY LOUD ENGINE NOISE. TRIED REVERSE AND CAR ENGAGED IN REVERSE FAST. I TURNED VEHICLE OFF AGAIN AND CALLED TOW TRUCK.

WHILE DRIVING, MULTIPLE TIMES, I WOULD HEAR A CHIME, THE POWER STEERING LIGHTS UP ON DASH, THEN LOSS OF POWER STEERING WOULD RESULT. THIS PROBLEM STARTED HAPPENING APPROXIMATELY 1 1/2 YEARS AGO. THIS PROBLEM IS GETTING MORE FREQUENT AND IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. I TOOK THE CAR TO PINE BELT APPROXIMATELY 1 1/2 WEEKS AGO AND WAS TOLD I NEEDED A POWER STEERING PUMP. SINCE WE GOT THE HHR 3 YEARS AGO WE HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THE ROTORS 5 DIFFERENT TIMES BECAUSE THEY BECOME WARPED. THE NEW ONES ONLY LAST A MONTH, MAYBE A 1,000 MILES OF WEAR BEFORE THE BRAKES START TO BECOME WARPED AGAIN. TWO MONTHS AGO BEFORE I COULD GET IT INTO THE SHOP TO REPLACE THE ROTORS I STEPPED ON THE BRAKE DOING ABOUT 5 MPH WHEN I HEARD A GRINDING NOISE. I IMMEDIATELY TOOK IT THE SHOP, 50 MILES AWAY, TO FIND OUT THAT A BRAKE PAD WAS COMPLETELY MISSING!!! APPARENTLY THE WARPED ROTOR UNEVEN SURFACE JERKED THE BRAKE PAD OUT OF ITS SETTING AND THAT IS WHY IT WAS MISSING. THE MECHANIC HAD TO DO A COMPLETE BRAKE (FRONT) JOB USING THE BEST ROTORS ON THE MARKET 2 MONTHS AGO AND IN LESS THAN 1 MONTH, WITH NO HEAVY BRAKING, THE BRAKES ARE ONCE AGAIN SHOWING SIGNS THAT THE ROTORS ARE WARPED---STEPPING ON THE BRAKES IT IS JERKING ONCE AGAIN, AND NOW THEY ARE ALMOST AS BAD AS THEY WERE WHEN I TOOK THEM IN TO GET REPAIRED. THERE WAS NOT A SINGLE INCIDENT THAT I COULD DOCUMENT THE MILEAGE AND MPH.THE PROBLEM WAS MOST NOTICEABLE AND FRIGHTENING WHEN GOING DOWN AN EXTENDED STRETCH OF RELATIVELY STEEP GRADE IN THE MOUNTAINS AT A SPEED OF 45 - 50 MPH. AFTER DRIVING FOR MORE THAN 10-30 MIN, AT ANY SPEED BUT USUALLY AT OR ABOVE 50 MPH, THE POWER STEERING WOULD MALFUNCTION INTERMITTENTLY, STEERING/HANDLING BECAME DIFFICULT. FEELS LIKE IT'S OVER-CORRECTING OR IS ICE-SKATING AROUND THE LANE WHEN KEEPING THE WHEEL STRAIGHT. KEPT HEARING A CLUNKING NOISE IN THE FRONT END WHEN GOING OVER SPEED BUMPS OR HITTING REGULAR BUMPS IN THE ROAD. HAVE TAKEN IT TO CHEVY MECHANICS SEVERAL TIMES, AND NO ISSUE WAS FOUND. TOOK IT IN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR A TUNE UP AND HE TOLD ME THAT THE FRONT BUSHINGS WERE COMPLETELY SHOT AND IT WAS HAVING AN ADVERSE EFFECT ON MY ALIGNMENT. MECHANIC STATED THAT FOR THE BUSHINGS TO BE IN THE CONDITION THEY WERE IN, THIS HAD TO HAVE BEEN AN ONGOING PROBLEM. CHEVY NEVER DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AND NEVER MADE ANY SUGGESTIONS FOR REPAIRS OF THIS NATURE. I PURCHASED MY 2008 CHEVY HHR FROM A DEALERSHIP IN KY IN FEBRUARY 2013, WITH AROUND 55K MILES ON IT. DUE TO THE AMOUNT OF MILES I ALSO PURCHASED AN EXTENDED GM POWER TRAIN WARRANTY. TOWARD THE END OF MAY, I WAS DRIVING ON THE HI-WAY COMING OFF AN EXIT, GOING BETWEEN 45-55 MILES AN HOUR VEERING TO THE RIGHT, WHEN THE POWER STEERING IN MY CAR WENT OUT. THE MILEAGE SCREEN FLASHED POWER STEERING AND I COULD HARDLY STEER MY CAR TO GET OFF THE EXIT ONTO ANOTHER HI-WAY. I DROVE MY CAR HOME AND PARKED IT IN THE DRIVEWAY. THE NEXT MORNING I GOT UP AND STARTED MY CAR, DROVE IT AND IT WAS OK. HOWEVER, THE NEXT DAY THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT AGAIN AND HAS EVERY DAY SINCE THEN. IN THE BEGINNING I WOULD TURN MY CAR OFF, WAIT 1 TO 2 MINUTES, START MY CAR AND IT WOULD BE FINE. STARTING LAST MONTH, THE POWER STEERING GOES OFF EVERY 2 TO 5 MINUTES REGARDLESS IF I RE-START MY CAR OR NOT.... IT DOES NOT MATTER IF I AM TRYING TO MAKE A TURN, OR DRIVING DOWN A STRAIGHT ROAD. I CAN HAVE THE AC ON, THE AC OFF AND THE POWER STEERING GOES OUT WITHIN 2 MINUTES OF ME STARTING MY CAR. My power steering unexpectedly has gone out. When it first happened I was on the freeway in the rain and it locked up. Thankfully there were no others cars near me or I would of had an accident. I called the dealership and they said there WAS a recall but too much time has passed! This makes no sense. If it's bad it's bad, what the heck! So now I have taken the fuse out and it at least keeps it from locking up it it is VERY difficult to steer and I fear not being able to respond quickly in an emergency. Then I was noticing that when I add gas it had trouble turning over. Only when I added gas. Gas mileage began getting worse and then I felt the motor having difficulty while again on the freeway. I could smell gas and pulled over. There was smoke under the hood and I could see gas puddling up under my car. Now I am scared of my car. I called GMC and they said they couldn't help me with either of these issues to contact my dealership. I haven't done this because I already know they are gonna say they can not help me. This is absurd. I have had this car a year and NOTHING but problems for me.

THE STEERING BECAME EXTREMELY DIFFICULT MIDWAY THROUGH THE TURN, WHICH CAUSED ME TO DRIVE PARTIALLY THROUGH A DITCH RATHER THAN COMPLETING MY TURN SAFELY AND ENTERING THE DRIVEWAY FULLY ON THE PAVEMENT. I THEN HAD TO PARK, TURN THE KEY TO THE "OFF" POSITION AND RESTART IN ORDER TO REACTIVATE THE POWER STEERING. WE HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING THIS RANDOMLY FOR SEVERAL MONTHS AND HAVE EVEN ACQUIRED SOME MINOR BODY AND COSMETIC DAMAGE DUE TO HAVING LOST POWER STEERING IN A CURVE. WHEN I CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP, THEY TOLD ME IT MIGHT BE FROM A FAULTY IGNITION SWITCH THAT IS NOW ON ORDER AND MAY TAKE QUITE AWHILE TO BECOME AVAILABLE. TODAY, I RAN AN INTERNET SEARCH AND FOUND HUNDREDS OF MENTIONS OF THIS SAME PROBLEM WITHIN MY YEAR MODEL, INCLUDING A NUMBER OF RECALLS THAT SEEM TO AFFECT THE ELECTRICAL POWER STEERING OF THIS MODEL AND OTHERS. HOWEVER, WHEN I AGAIN CALLED THE DEALERSHIP TO INQUIRE, THEY INFORMED ME THAT MY VIN IS NOT INCLUDED IN ANY OF THE STEERING RECALLS, AND THAT I WOULD HAVE TO PAY THEM OR SOMEONE ELSE TO MAKE THE REPAIRS AND ATTEMPT TO GET REIMBURSED IF IT EVER DOES BECOME INCLUDED. Steering gets very stiff and sometimes locks up when turning left or right in a curve at highway speeds. Had dealer check it and they said they replaced steering motor. Did not correct problem. Made an appointment to check again but was told I would incur charges. I have had it to several mechanic shops and we cannot find anything loose or failing. In a parked position it locks up completely until you start rolling. Afraid steering is going to lock up in a curve and cause harm to driver and passengers. It is available for inspection. It has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police or insurance. Has no warning lights or messages pertaining to problem. The problem first appeared approximately 6 months ago.

Upon inspection, the contact detected a fuel odor and noticed there was a fuel leak coming from the fuel lines. The dealer was made aware of the failure and scheduled an upcoming appointment for diagnosis. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Action Number: PE20011 (Fuel System, Other). The failure mileage was approximately 113,000.

PRIOR TO GARAGING THE CAR I CONTACTED CHEVROLET ABOUT THE "VERY COMMON" LEAK AND WAS TOLD TO CALL MY LOCAL DEALER, ALL TO NO AVAIL. I'VE BEEN WAITING TO HEAR IF THE JULY 2020 NHTSA INVESTIGATION WILL TURN INTO A RECALL. WHEN WILL A RULING BE AVAILABLE? I'M AT THE POINT WHERE I WILL BE DOING A SHADE-TREE-MECHANIC REPAIR IN LIEU OF WAITING ON NHTSA. GM (CHEVROLET) HAVE BEEN BUILDING CARS FOR 100 YEARS. THE FUEL LINE ON MY VEHICLE DEVELOPED A LEAK AT THE LEFT REAR TIRE. I HAD TO BUY AND INSTALL AN AFTERMARKET FUEL LINE KIT. I FOUND THAT THE METAL FUEL LINE HAS RUSTED THROUGH. WHEN REMOVING THE OLD FUEL LINE THE PURGE LINE BROKE OPEN AT A RUSTY AREA. THESE TWO LINES AND A BRAKE LINE RUN THROUGH A TUBULAR KNITTED HEAT SHIELD IN THIS AREA. THE HEAT SHIELD HAD COLLECTED DIRT AND SALT AND WAS DAMP ON A DRY DAY WHEN I WAS WORKING ON THE LINE REPLACEMENT. POOR DESIGN.

NO ONE CAN PINPOINT WHAT THE CAUSE IS, BUT MY POWER STEERING CUTS OFF SUDDENLY WHILE DRIVING. THIS HAS HAPPEN NUMEROUS TIMES. TREAD QUARTERS THINKS REPLACING ONE OF THE TIRES WOULD HELP, BUT IT HAS NOT. CHEVY NEEDS TO LOOK AT THIS ISSUE SINCE IT SEEMS MORE ELECTRICAL THAN ANYTHING. I TOOK THE CAR INTO THE SHOP ON 11/15/14 BECAUSE OF A LOUD EXHAUST SOUND. THE MECHANIC ADVISED THE FLEX PIPE WAS LEAKING AND THE FLEX PIPE AND CATALYTIC CONVERTERS (2) WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE COST IS ESTIMATED AT ABOUT $900. IF THE CAR IS IN IDOL, THE EXHAUST SEEPS INTO THE CAR AND COULD CAUSE CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING AND DEATH, IF THE WINDOWS ARE NOT CRACKED TO ALLOW FOR VENTILATION. AROUND APRIL MY CAR STARTED TO HAVE A HARD TIME ACCELERATING. A WARNING CANE ON THE DASH THAT READ "LOOSING ENGINEPOWER" OR WORDS TO THAT EFFECT. WHEN I WOULD BRAKE MY CAR WOULD SHAKE. AFTER RESEARCHING THIS...IT IS VERY COMMON WITH THIS CAR, ALONG WITH BRAKE ISSUES, SEVERE SHAKING IN FRONT, BEARINGS GOING OUT AND MANY OTHER PROBLEMS THAT I HAVE ALSO HAD. I BOUGHT THIS CAR IN JUNE OF 2008. I PURCHASED A 2008 CHEVROLET HHR IN 2009 WITH 40,000 MILES ON IT. I NOTICED BRAKING/SHAKING PROBLEM. DEALER FIXED IT THE DAY AFTER I BOUGHT IT. UNDER 500 MILES LATER, BRAKING/SHAKING STARTS AGAIN. DIFFERENT DEALER TURNS ROTORS TWO MORE TIMES. PADS ARE WEARING EVENLY, SO THE DEALER MECHANIC ADVISED ME TO PURCHASE AFTER-MARKET ROTORS AS THE OEM DO NOT APPEAR TO RESIST WARPING VERY WELL. WHEN THE DEALER'S MECHANIC RECOMMENDS PUTTING ON A NON-DEALER PART, THERE HAS GOT TO BE SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE ENGINEERING OF THE CAR OR THE INTEGRITY OF THE METAL IN THE ROTORS. THE ELECTRIC POWER STEERING TURNED ITSELF OFF MID TURN CAUSING A DRASTIC UNDERSTEERING LEADING THE VEHICLE INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC, UPON RESEARCH I FOUND THAT GM RECALLED THE EXACT SAME STEERING COMPONENTS THAT FAILED IN THE HHR IN OTHER GM VEHICLES BUT NOT THE HHR. IF THIS DOES NOT WARRANT SERIOUS INVESTIGATION WHAT DOES. THE SECOND TIME THIS HAPPENED EVERYTHING WAS FINE AS WE WERE DRIVING STRAIGHT, THE PROBLEM OCCURRED WHEN THE ELECTRIC POWER STEERING TURNED BACK ON MID-TURN CAUSING MY WIFE TO OVER TURN INTO SOMEONE'S FRONT LAWN, HAD ANYONE BEEN IN THE WAY THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN TRAGIC. WE'VE BEEN LUCKY THIS FAR BUT AS WE ARE A LOW INCOME HOUSEHOLD WE DON'T HAVE THE MEANS TO PAY SOME DEALER TO FIX THIS AS THEY ALL SAY IT'S ON US THE OWNERS TO TAKE CARE OF EVEN THOUGH IT'S THE SAME DEFECTIVE EQUIPMENT THAT WAS IN VEHICLES LIKE THE COBALT AND PONTIACS LINES, WHY HASN'T THERE BEEN A RECALL ISSUED, THIS IS A SEVER DRIVING IMPAIRMENT THAT CAN CAUSE ACCIDENTS AND GM DOESN'T SEEM TO CARE DUE TO IT'S AN ACCEPTABLE LOSS! NO LIFE IS AN ACCEPTABLE LOSS, PLEASE ADDRESS THIS ISSUE AS THERE ARE MANY COMPLAINTS INTO THIS SAME ISSUE IN THE RESEARCH I PREFORMED, BY THE WAY, WHY IS IT GM CANADA ISSUED A RECALL ON THIS PART FOR THE HHR AND NOT THE US BRANCH? BRAKE ROTORS WARPED AND THE CAR WOULD SHAKE WITH SUCH A SEVERE FORCE CONTROLLING THE CAR WAS VERY HARD. AFTER THE DEALER REPLACED FOUR SETS, BEFORE THE CAR HAD 50,000 MILES ON IT, THE DEALER TOLD ME THAT THE BRAKE PADS WERE WORN OUT AND THAT WOULD CAUSE THIS TO HAPPEN AGAIN. JUST BEFORE THE LAST ROTORS WERE, REPLACED THE ELECTRIC POWER STEERING WOULD CEASE WORKING AND EFFECTIVELY HINDER OUR ABILITY TO STEER THE CAR. THE ELECTRIC POWER STEERING IS STILL A PROBLEM DAILY AT DIFFERENT TIMES. I AM GOING TO CHECK INTO THE REPAIR PROCESS SOON. I ALSO OWN A 2008 CHEVY HHR LT THAT IS LOADED. I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE BRAND NEW AND CURRENTLY HAVE 39,000 MILES ON IT. I HAVE HAD NOTHING BUT TROUBLE WITH THIS VEHICLE. I HAVE HAD ALL OF THE FOLLOWING PROBLEMS AND GM REPLACED SOME OF THEM. GM INSTALLED A NEW INTERMEDIATE STEERING COLUMN, DRAG LINKS,TURNED ROTORS 4 TIMES AND RIGHT SIDE UPPER BALL JOINT. AFTER THE WARRANTY EXPIRED, THE BRAKES ONCE AGAIN WENT TO HELL IN A HAND BASKET. I ORDERED A SET OF RACING ROTORS AND CERAMIC BRAKES, THIS CURED THE BRAKE PROBLEM. AT 37,000 MILES, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND I HAD IT CHECKED OUT AND IT WAS THE CAM SENSOR. I REPLACED THE SENSOR AND RESET THE LIGHT AND IT DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. WE OWN A 2008 HHR AND IT HAS BEEN NOTHING BUT TROUBLE . FIRST WHEN WE PURCHASED THE CAR IN DEC 2008 IT HAD 23,000 MILES ON IT. TWO MONTHS AFTER WE GOT THE CAR WE HAD TO REPLACE BOTH FRONT ROTORS ON IT AND AFTER FIGHTING WITH GM THEY AGREED TO PAY FOR THE ROTORS. AT THIS TIME THEY TOLD US THAT THE CAR NEEDED NEW TIRES AND A FRONT END ALIGNMENT AT 26,000 MILES . THEN JUST TWO MONTHS AGO AT 61,000 MILES IT HAD A RUMBLING NOISE IN THE FRONT END ,THE DRIVETRAIN WAS STILL UNDER WARRENTY.THE DEALER TOLD ME THAT THE RIGHT SIDE AXLE BEARING WAS BAD AND THEY REPLACED IT,AND ALSO AT THIS TIME THEY TOLD US THAT THE LOWER BALL JOINT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AT A COST TO US OF OVER $400.00 . JUST LAST WEEK THE RUMBLING NOISE RETURNED , I RETURNED THE CAR TO THE DEALER AGAIN AND THEY TOLD US THAT THIS THE LEFT AXLE BEARING WAS BAD, WARRANTY ALSO COVERED THIS REPAIR. ALSO THEY SAID THAT THE CAR NEEDED THE FRONT ROTORS TURNED AND NEW BRAKE PADS ON IT .MY WIFE HIT A POTHOLE ABOUT THREE WEEKS AGO AND BENT THE WHEEL . COST TO REPLACE THE WHEEL WAS $150.00 . WHEN I ROTATED THE TIRES AS PER GMS ADVICE I NOTICED THAT THE RIGHT FRONT STRUT WAS LEAKING ,AND AS WELL AS THE LEFT REAR SHOCK ABSORBER. THE ONLY THING I LIKE ABOUT THIS CAR WAS ITS LOOKS. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 CHEVROLET HHR. WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS TRAVELING 55 MPH WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL ENGAGED THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY SHUT OFF, CAUSING THE CONTACT TO COAST THE VEHICLE TO A STOP. ALSO IN A SEPARATE INCIDENT , WHILE THE CONTACT WAS ATTEMPTING TO MAKE A U-TURN TRAVELING AT A SPEED OF 8 MPH HE NOTICED THAT THE POWER STEERING LIGHT HAD APPEARED ON THE DASHBOARD. MOMENTS LATER THE POWER STEERING NO LONGER FUNCTIONED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR BOTH INCIDENTS WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT NEITHER FAILURE COULD BE REPRODUCED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 52000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE IS 56000.

MY MOTHER EXPERIENCED SHAKING AND PULLING TO THE SIDE WHEN APPLYING THE BRAKES. I TOLD HER TO TAKE IT TO CHEVY FOR REPAIRS. THEY PUT NEW ROTORS AND BRAKE PADS ON THE CAR AT MY EXPENSE. I AM A MECHANIC AND IT IS NOT NORMAL FOR THE FRICTION PAD TO BE MISSING ON THE BRAKES, THAT IS A PART FAILURE NOT WEAR AND TEAR. I HAVE THE PARTS TAKEN OFF MY CAR IN SEPTEMBER WHEN THE REPAIR OCCURRED, THAT PROVES MY STATEMENT. TWO MONTHS LATER THIS SAME PROBLEM IS OCCURRING AGAIN. I CONTACTED CHEVY AND THEY SAID IT WAS NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR. I FEEL THE NEW ROTORS ARE WARPED. ALSO I HAVE COMPLAINED TO CHEVY SEVERAL TIMES BECAUSE WHEN THE CAR IS FIRST STARTED THE BRAKES ARE HARD. AFTER PURCHASE OF A NEW 2008 HHR ON 22 SEPTEMBER 2008, I DROVE THE VEHICLE HOME AND UPON GETTING INTO IT THE NEXT MORNING I BACKED OUT OF MY GARAGE AND NOTICE A VERY SOFT BRAKE PEDAL. I THEN STARTED DOWN THE DRIVE WAY AND WHEN ATTEMPTING TO STOP AT THE STREET THE VEHICLE'S BRAKES WOULD NOT COMPLY WITH MY BRAKE PRESSURE AND THE VEHICLE PROCEEDED INTO THE STREET. THIS BECAME A ROUTINE SITUATION UPON "COLD STARTUP'S" AND WHEN REPORTED TO THE DEALER,(JOHN DONOGHUE CHEVROLET, WHITEVILLE, NC) AFTER SEVERAL POOR STOPS, MY SALESMAN ADVISED "YEAH WE KNOW ABOUT IT AS WE'VE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM ON 2008 SOLSTICES". WHEN CONFRONTED WITH A POSSIBLE FIX HE ADVISED THAT " A PART ON THE TURBO FIXES THE PROBLEM." I MADE ARRANGEMENTS TO HAVE THE CAR SERVICED UPON MY RETURN FROM VACATION ON OR ABOUT 26 OCT 08. I DROPPED THE CAR OFF WITH THE SERVICE WRITER/MANAGER AND NO MENTION WAS MADE AS TO POTEN TIAL PROBLEMS FIXING THE CAR. UPON MY RETURN SEVERAL HOURS LATER I WAS ADVISED BY THE SERVICE MANAGER THAT THE PROBLEM IS SYSTEMIC TO 2008 TURBO ENGINES AND GENERAL MOTORS DOESN'T WANT TO RECALL THE CARS. THE DEALERSHIP SERVICE MANAGER PROVIDED ME WITH A SERVICE BULLETIN THAT GM PUT OUT AS A POTENTIAL "FIX" BUT HE REFUSED TO SERVICE THE CAR. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO ANOTHER CHEVROLET DEALERSHIP AND THEY READJUSTED THE COMPUTER, PER THE BULLETIN; HOWEVER, THE VEHICLE STILL DOES NOT STOP PROPERLY ON COLD STARTUP. I HAVE A 2008 HHR SS WITH THE 2.0L TURBO ENGINE THAT IN MY OPINION HAS A SEVERE BRAKE PROBLEM. WHEN THE CAR STARTS UP AFTER BEING LEFT OFF FOR A PERIOD OF TIME THE BRAKES DO NOT APPLY PRESSURE PROPERLY MAKING IT DIFFICULT TO STOP. MOST TIMES THE PROBLEM GOES AWAY AS THE CAR WARMS UP AND IS BEING DRIVEN. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY PROGRAMMED THE VEHICLES COMPUTER AND TOLD ME THAT WAS THE FIX. THEY DESCRIBED THE FIX AS ADJUSTING THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKES TO COMPENSATE FOR THE LOSS OF PRESSURE. THIS ONLY HELPED SLIGHTLY AND NOW WHEN THE ENGINE IS COLD IF I APPLY PRESSURE TO THE BRAKES I CAN FEEL THE ABS PULSATING AND EVEN WITH FULL PRESSURE APPLIED THE CAR JERKS WHEN STOPPED AND EVEN INCHES FORWARD WHEN AT STOP LIGHTS AND STOP SIGNS UNTIL THE CAR HAS WARMED UP FOR AT LEAST A FEW MINUTES. I DO NOT THINK THE "FIX" OF PROGRAMMING THE VEHICLES COMPUTER IS ADEQUATE AND WHEN I CALLED BACK ABOUT THE PROBLEMS AFTER THE DEALERSHIP APPLIED THEIR FIX THEY TOLD ME THAT IS ALL THEY CAN DO.
