THE INTAKE MANIFOLD WAS REPLACED TWO YEARS PRIOR BY A CERTIFIED MECHANIC, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE INTAKE MANIFOLD WAS FRACTURED. IN ADDITION, THE INTAKE MANIFOLD EXPLODED AND CAUSED A FIRE. A POLICE REPORT WAS NOT FILED. THE CONTACT'S FAMILY EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE. THERE WERE NO INJURIES. THE DEALER, WALTER'S CHEVROLET, WAS CONTACTED ABOUT THE FIRE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 123,000.

OIL AND COOLANT (ANTI-FREEZE) IS EVAPORATING OR BEING BURNED UP. AFTER EXTENSIVE RESEARCH ONLINE, IT SEEMS THERE IS A DEFECT IN THE MATERIAL USED BY CHEVY WITH REGARD TO A GASKET CALLED A PLENUM THAT IS LOCATED IN THE INTAKE MANIFOLD. THE GASKET WARPS UNDER HEAT AND AGE AND ALLOWS COOLANT AND OR OIL TO ENTER THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT WHICH EVAPORATES. WITH THE AMOUNT OF COMPLAINTS I FOUND ONLINE, THIS SEEMS LIKE A COMMON ISSUE WITH THE CHEVY IMPALA 3.8L V6 TYPE 2 ENGINE. GM SHOULD REPLACE THE INFERIOR MATERIAL USED WITH A SUPERIOR METAL GASKET. THIS ISSUE SEEMS LIKE IT COULD CAUSE A FIRE IN THE ENGINE. I ALSO READ THAT THIS ISSUE CAN CAUSE OIL TO BE BURNED. GM USED A CHEAP GASKET TO SAVE MONEY BUT THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE WHEN COOLANT AND OIL IS BEING BURNED UP INTERNALLY AT AN UNUSUAL SPEED OF TIME. EXTERIOR LIGHTS 133,000 MILES LIGHTS WENT OUT ON MY 2000 IMPALA IN MAY 2014. THIS IS WHAT HAPPENED. I HAD FRACTURED MY LEFT RIB AT HOME AND WAS DRIVING TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM AT MERCY HOSPITAL WHEN I HIT MY BRIGHT LIGHTS, BECAUSE THE ROAD WAS DARK, AND ALL OF MY LIGHTS WHEN OUT. I PULLED OVER AND KEPT CLICKING THE LIGHTS LEVER AND IT WOULD GO FROM NO LIGHTS TO BRIGHT LIGHTS WITH EACH CLICK. I GOT THE LOW BEAM TO FINALLY COME BACK ON AFTER SEVERAL BACK AND FORTH CLICKS. THE POLICE STOPPED ME THAT NIGHT BECAUSE I HAD TO USE MY RIGHT HAND TO CLICK THE LIGHTS, WHICH IS ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE CAR, WHICH CAUSED ME TO WEAVE A LITTLE. HE ALSO OBSERVED ME PULL OFF THE ROAD FOR A MINUTE, TO GET LIGHTS BACK ON. HE SAID HE THOUGHT I HAD BEEN DRINKING BUT SAW THAT I WAS HURT, 65 YEARS OLD, AND I EXPLAINED HOW MY LIGHTS HAD JUST GONE OUT ON ME WHILE I WAS DRIVING TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM AND I HAD TO KEEP CLICKING THE HIGH BEAM, LOW BEAM, BACK AND FORTH TO MAKE LOW BEAM COME BACK. HE SAW THAT I WAS HURT AND COULDN'T USE LEFT ARM AND HE SAW HOW I HAD TO LEAN OVER WITH RIGHT HAND TO KEEP CLICKING SWITCH TO GET MY LOW BEAMS TO COME BACK ON, KEEPING IN MIND, I?M IN SEVERE PAIN. I WAS ABLE TO GET LOW BEAM BACK ON WHILE THE OFFICER WAS STANDING THERE AND HE SAW THE PROBLEM AND UNDERSTOOD AND TOLD ME TO BE CAREFUL. NO TICKET. I DON?T USE MY HIGH BEAMS ANYMORE. ALSO, I HAVE NO LIGHTS IN THE CLUSTER, I CAN'T TELL MY SPEED, I USE MY PHONE TO SEE HOW FAST I'M GOING AND THEN SET THE AUTO DRIVE. I CAN'T SEE THE GAS GAUGE, BUT THE LOW FUEL LIGHT WORKS, IT WILL COME ON AND NO INDOOR LIGHTS ON TOP OF DOORS. HOWEVER THE RED SECURITY LIGHT ON THE DASHBOARD WORKS. WHEN I OPEN CAR DOOR IT'S COMPLETELY DARK, I HAVE TO USE A FLASHLIGHT OR MY PHONE TO SEE OR LOOK FOR THINGS. *TR

CONSUMER STATES PROBLEM WITH TRANSMISSION AND REQUESTS REIMBURSEMENT*TGW THE CONSUMER STATED AS HE BACKED THE VEHICLE IN HIS GARAGE, A LOUD BANG CAME FROM THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. THE CONSUMER REMOVED THE GEAR FROM REVERSE TO DRIVE AND THEN THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO VIBRATE. HE SHIFTED THE GEAR INTO PARK AND IN AN INSTANT THE VEHICLE MOVED FORWARD. HE ATTEMPTED TO SHIFT INTO NEUTRAL, TO STOP THE FORWARD MOVEMENT, BUT TO NO AVAIL. DT: THE CONTACT STATED THE BACK PLATE FAILED ON THE REAR BRAKES. THE VEHICLE WAS IN NEUTRAL WITH THE EMERGENCY BRAKE ON AND THE BRAKE FAILED. UPON INSPECTION IT WAS DISCOVERED THE BACKER PLATE RUSTED OUT, RESULTING IN THE BRAKE FAILURE. THE PARKING BRAKE SYSTEM WAS A COMBINATION OF BOTH DISC AND DRUM BRAKES. THERE WAS NO WARNING PRIOR TO THE COMPLETE FAILURE OF THE BACK PLATE. THE BACK PLATE HAS NOT BEEN REPLACED AT THIS TIME. EARLIER THERE WAS A FAILURE OF THE ENTIRE VEHICLE BRAKING SYSTEM. ALL FOUR BRAKE ROTORS RUSTED, RESULTING IN TOTAL BRAKE FAILURE. THE WHEEL CYLINDER SEPARATED FROM THE CALIPERS. THE ONLY WARNING LIGHT CAME AFTER THE COMPLETE FAILURE OF THE LEFT ROTOR. THE ROTORS WERE REPLACED AND THE CALIPERS WERE REBUILT. THE BRAKE PADS HAD LESS THAN 50 % WEAR BUT THEY WERE REPLACED AS WELL. *AK

THIS 15 YEAR OLD CAR HAS VERY LITTLE OVERALL BODY RUST, BELOW AVERAGE MILES, MECHANICALLY RUNS GREAT AND HAS MANY MORE MILES TO GO. I HAVE BEEN A LOYAL CHEVY OWNER STARTING WITH MY FIRST 1963 CHEVY BISCAYNE. THIS IS MY FIRST MAJOR COMPLAINT ABOUT GM BECAUSE THIS IS NOT DUE TO MY ABUSE OR NEGLIGENCE. SINCE SHORTLY AFTER CAR WAS PURCHASED THERE IS A NOTICEABLE CLUNKING/POPPING NOISE COMING FROM THE RIGHT FRONT OF THE CAR. THIS IS ESPECIALLY HEARD WHEN GOING OVER A BUMP. ORIGINAL THOUGHT WAS THAT IT WAS EITHER AN ARM OR A JOINT. DEALER SAID IT WAS NOT A PROBLEM AND SUBSEQUENT COMPLAINTS HAVE RESULTED IN MY BEING TOLD IT WAS EITHER "IN MY STEERING COLUMN" (WHICH I FIND ODD SINCE THAT IS ON THE LEFT), OR A "NOISE THAT DOESN'T MEAN ANYTHING", OR "SOMETHING TYPICAL TO ALUMINUM ROCKERS", OR EVEN THAT IT WAS SOMETHING THEY HEARD MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT BUT IT WASN'T HURTING ANYTHING. I HAVE HAD THE CAR SINCE IT WAS NEW IN NOVEMBER 2000 SO APPARENTLY THE NOISE IS NOT A SAFETY HAZARD, OR AT LEAST NOT TO ME, AND NOT YET. I REMAIN CONCERNED AND COMPLAIN ABOUT IT ALMOST EACH TIME I TAKE IT IN TO THE MECHANIC FOR ANY OTHER WORK. TODAY THE LOCAL CHEVROLET REP OFFERED TO PAY 50% OF THE REPAIR COST TO DO SOMETHING TO THE STEERING WHICH THEY THINK IS THE CAUSE, BUT WHY SHOULD I PAY FOR SOMETHING THEIR CAR DOES THAT IT SHOULD NOT? THE LIGHTS HAVE TOTALLY FAILED IN THE PAST. A WEBSITE NAMED "TOPIX.COM" HAS CITED MANY INSTANCES OF THIS TYPE OF LIGHT FAILURE, RESULTING IN SEVERAL NEAR MISSES AS REGARDS SERIOUS ACCIDENTS. T IS VERY APPARENT (AND EVIDENT FROM THE NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS FILED WITH YOUR OFFICE) THAT THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE FOR WHICH CHEVROLET IS DENYING THE EXISTENCE AND/OR RESPONSIBILITY OF ANY PROBLEM. ON 1/8/14 AT APPROX. 8:00 AM, I ATTEMPTED TO START MY CAR, I HEARD A LOUD POP OR BANG AND SMELLED SMOKE, I QUICKLY GOT OUT OF THE CAR AND NOTICED SMOKE COMING FROM THE HOOD. CORRODED THROUGH BRAKE LINE! I WAS DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE AT 65 MPH AND APPLIED THE BRAKES MILDLY. MY FOOT FELT NORMAL BRAKE RESISTANCE FOR AN INSTANT AND THEN THE BRAKE PEDAL SUDDENLY WENT TO THE FLOOR. FORTUNATELY, AS MY SLOWING WAS NOT CRITICAL AT THAT MOMENT, THE FAILED BRAKING DID NOT RESULT IN A DISASTER. DURING MY DIAGNOSIS OF THE PROBLEM, ON APPLYING THE BRAKES MUCH BRAKE FLUID LEAKED ON THE GROUND BELOW THE MASTER CYLINDER, BUT NOT INVOLVING THE MASTER CYLINDER. CLOSER INSPECTION I DISCOVERED THAT THE BRAKE LINE CROSSING THE FIREWALL TO THE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL (ABOUT 12 INCHES BELOW THE MASTER CYLINDER AND A FEW INCHES TOWARD THE PASSENGER SIDE) WAS ASSEMBLED SUCH THAT IT IS EMBEDDED IN FELT (WHICH APPARENTLY PROVIDES SOUND DEADENING FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT) UP AGAINST THE FIREWALL FOR ABOUT 6 INCHES. THIS FELT HOLDS WATER AND REMAINS WET ALMOST CONTINUOUSLY IN THE NORTH CAROLINA ENVIRONMENT. THERE IS EXTENSIVE RUST ON THE BRAKE LINE IN THIS AREA - AND IT IS RUSTED THROUGH, WITH BRAKE FLUID SQUIRTING OUT WHEN THE BRAKES ARE APPLIED. THIS IS VERY STUPID AND DANGEROUS DESIGN PATH FOR THIS BRAKE LINE - IT SHOULD BE INSTALLED SUCH THAT IT DOES NOT CONTACT THE FELT. IT IS OBVIOUS THAT IT WAS ASSEMBLED THIS WAY (THE LINE IS NOT FLEXIBLE AT THIS POINT) - FIRMLY FORCED UP AGAINST THE FELT ON THE FIREWALL AND HELD IN THIS POSITION BY FASTENERS - NOT DUE TO ANY MOVEMENT OF THE LINE AFTER ASSEMBLY. THIS UNNECESSARY FAILURE DUE TO STUPID DESIGN MAY WELL HAVE RESULTED IN A SERIOUS OR EVEN FATAL ACCIDENT, VERY POSSIBLY INVOLVING A PEDESTRIAN AND/OR ONE OR MORE AUTOMOBILES. ACCESS TO REPLACE THIS LINE WILL REQUIRE THE CAR TO BE ON A LIFT, WHICH I AM UNABLE TO PROVIDE, SUCH THAT I WILL HAVE TO PAY GOOD MONEY TO HAVE IT FIXED. TURNS OUT THE FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR MALFUNTION AND BLEW AND CAUSED THE EXPLOSION. MY MECHANIC AND I BOTH CALLED CHEVERLET ON THIS, THERE RESPONSE WAS"NOT ENOUGH REPORTS FOR A RECALL"BUT TO SAVE MY RECIEPTS AND WHEN THERE IS I WILL BE REIMBURSED.I GOT A REPORT NUMBER AND THAT WAS IT.AFTER ALMOST 2 WEEKS I GOT MY CAR BACK AND PAID OVER $1500.00 IN REPAIRS FOR THE DAMAGES CAUSED FROM IT. I FINALLY GOT A RECALL LETTER , CALLED CHEVERLET AND THEY GAVE ME ANOTHER FILE NUMBER TO PUT ON MY CLAIM FORM.I JUST GOT A CALL FROM THEM THIS PAST FRIDAY INFORMING ME THEY WILL ONLY REIMBURSE ME 800 AND SOME CHANGE. WHEN I ASKED WHY, ALL MARIO JOHNSON COULD SAY WAS THATS ALL WERE WILLING TO PAY YOU. SO I ASKED HIM IF EVERYONE WHOS CAR BLEW UP FROM THIS IS GOING TO HALF TO EAT ALMOST 50% OF THE COST FROM THERE FAULTY PART? HE REFUSED TO ANSWER ME. THE CONTACT DID NOT RECEIVE A RECALL NOTIFICATION AND STATED THAT THE VEHICLE EXPERIENCED THE FAILURE LISTED IN THE RECALL CAMPAIGN. FOLLOW-UP ON COMPLAINT# 10650094. I HAVE RESEARCHED THIS PROBLEM,AND TRIED TO GET ASSISTANCE FROM GM WITH NO RESULTS OTHER THAT THE RUN-AROUND. I HAVE EXPLAINED THAT THE RECALL OF THIS VEHICLE AND REPAIR THAT IS SUGGESTED IS NOT THE ISSUE. THE IGNITION IS A 2 PART SWITCH AND THE MECHANICAL PART OF THE SWITCH IS ONLY PART OF THE PROBLEM. I WAS HEADING TO WORK I SLOWED TO TURN RIGHT ON TO THE ON RAMP OF THE INTERSTATE, AS I BEGAN MY TURN I LOST ALL POWER THE VEHICLE SHUT OFF, LIGHTS WENT DEAD AND THE BRAKES WENT OUT. I MADE IT TO THE CURB AND VEHICLE WOULD NOT RESTART.VEHICLE HAD TO BE TOWED HOME. I HAVE A 2000 IMPALA WITH APPROXIMATELY 161,000 MILES ON IT. THE CAR IS USED AND I AM THE 2ND OWNER. I WENT TO HAVE MY NORMAL OIL CHANGE AS I HAD NOTICED THE LOW ENGINE OIL PRESSURE LIGHT HAD COME ON. THE CAR HAD BEEN RUNNING OUT OF OIL FREQUENTLY, BUT I DIDN'T SEE ANY OIL LEAKS. THE PRINT OUT AFTER THE OIL CHANGE STATED MULTIPLE OIL LEAKS. BUT THERE WAS NEVER ANY OIL ON THE GROUND. THE CAR HAD BEEN RUNNING VERY ROUGH AND WAS STARING TO RUN WARMER THAN USUAL. ON 2/24/14 AT APPROXIMATELY 2:50 PM, I PROPERLY ATTACHED A SET OF BATTERY JUMPER CABLES FROM MY TRUCK TO THIS CAR TO START IT FROM A DEAD BATTERY SITUATION. WHEN THE OWNER ATTEMPTED TO CRANK THE CAR, THERE WAS AN EXPLOSION FROM THE INTAKE MANIFOLD DURING THE CRANKING, RESULTING IN AN EXPLOSION AND SMALL FIRE. THE OWNER IMMEDIATELY SWITCHED THE CAR OFF, AND EXITED THE VEHICLE, AND I IMMEDIATELY CLOSED THE HOOD SO THAT THE FIRE WOULD NOT SPREAD, CALLED THE FIRE DEPARTMENT, AND REMOVED THE VEHICLES AROUND IT. THE FIRE DEPT. RESPONDED WITHIN 5 MIN., AND EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE WITH WATER. THE FIRE DEPT. AND POLICE INSPECTED THE CAR, AND LEFT AFTER IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE FIRE WAS PROPERLY EXTINGUISHED, AND THERE WAS NO FURTHER RISK OF THE FIRE RE-STARTING. THE FIRE DAMAGE WAS CONFINED TO THE ENTIRE UNDER-HOOD AREA OF THE CAR. WHEN THE EXPLOSION HAPPENED, THE ENGINE COVER AND OIL FILLER CAP WAS BLOWN APPROXIMATELY 5 FT. FROM THE CAR, THE INTAKE MANIFOLD WAS BLOWN OPEN, AND THE FIRE WAS BURNING INSIDE THE INTAKE MANIFOLD. WE ATTEMPTED TO PUSH THE CAR INTO THE PARKING SPACE, BUT IT WOULD NOT MOVE. IT SEEMED THE ENGINE HAD SEIZED, PROBABLY AS A RESULT OF THE FIRE. THE CAR HAS SINCE BEEN TOWED TO OUR MECHANIC. THE CAR'S OWNER WAS INSIDE OF THE CAR, ATTEMPTING TO START IT VIA THE IGNITION KEY. I ASKED HER IF THERE WERE ANY PRIOR ISSUES WITH THE CAR, AND SHE TOLD ME THAT AT THE TIME, OTHER THAN A FLAT TIRE AND DEAD BATTERY, THE A/C WAS INOPERATIVE, AND NOT BEING USED. APPROXIMATELY 2-3 YEARS AGO, THE CAR WAS BROUGHT TO A LOCAL DEALER, AND A RECALL ISSUE WAS PERFORMED ON IT. SHE DID NOT REMEMBER WHAT SERVICE AND RECALL REPAIRS WERE DONE ON THE CAR. LOSS OF COOLANT BUT NO IDEA WHERE ITS GOING. SERGING PROBLEM IN ELECTRICAL SYSTEM, AND WIRING CONECTIONS AND PLUGS NOT CONNECTED TO ANYTHING. ICNITION PROBLEMS KEY WONT STAY IN AND CAN BE PULLED OUT WITH CAR RUNNING.HAVE REPLACED RADIATOR,ALL HOSES,ALL GASKETS,THERMISTATE,WATER PUMP,BELTS,DONE TUNEUP,OIL CHANGE, DONE BRAKES,REPLACED SENCERS,BATTERY,AND OTHER THINGS. 2000 CHEVY IMPALA LS,(THIS PROBLEM STARTED WHEN MY CAR WAS AT 40,000 MILES) THE TRACTION CONTROL WILL COME ON FOR NO REASON. THIS CAUSES AUTOMATIC BREAKING FOR WHICH YOU CAN NOT MOVE THE CAR YOU CAN BE BACKING UP, TURNING, OR GOING FORWARD. THE CAR WILL LAG AND THEN SHUDDER FIGHTING THE BRAKES THAT HAVE BEEN APPLIED BY THE CAR WHILE I AM ON THE GAS. I HAVE FOR MY SELF TURNED THE TRACTION CONTROL OFF. HOWEVER I HAVE RESEARCHED ON LINE AND FOUND THAT THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE WITH THIS VERY SAME PROBLEM. THEY HAVE BEEN TO THE DEALERSHIPS FOR TROUBLE SHOOTING AND REPLACED MANY POSSIBLE PARTS IT COULD BE AND THE PROBLEM WILL RESURFACE AGAIN. I WAS CONTENT WITH TURNING THE TRACTION CONTROL OFF ALTHOUGH WITH FURTHER RESEARCH I HAVE FOUND THE TRACTION CONTROL WILL RE-ENGAGE, SINCE THIS BUTTON NEEDS TO BE PRESSED EVERY TIME YOU TURN ON THE CAR. IT WILL RE-ENGAGE ITSELF AND YOU CAN NOT TURN IT OFF. THE BUTTON BECOMES USELESS. THIS IS WHY I AM TURNING TO THE NHTSA FOR HELP. I SEE THIS BEING A HUGE SAFETY RISK THAT I AM DRIVING AND THE ABS WILL ENGAGE ITSELF BECAUSE THE TRACTION CONTROL HAS COME ON. ON FEB.10TH OR 11TH.MY NEIGHBOR WAS ATTEMPTING TO JUMP START MY CAR BECAUSE THE BATTERY HAD FAILED DUE TO A 3 DAY SNOW STORM. AFTER TURNED THE IGNITION THE SECOND TIME, THERE WAS A LOUD BOOM. WHEN WE CHECKED THE ENGINE, WE NOTED THE MANIFOLD COVER HAD CRACKED INTO SEVERAL PIECES. ALSO THE WIRES WERE ON FIRE. MY NEIGHBOR QUICKLY EXTINGUISHED THE FLAMES. LATER, I WENT TO MY DEALER(FRANK Z CHEVROLET IN DAYTON, OH. ABOUT THE PROBLEM. I WAS TOLD BY THE ASSISTANT SERVICE MANAGER THAT THE REPAIRS COULD COST FROM $1,800-$2,000 MAINLY DUE TO THE FIRE DAMAGE. SINCE I HAVE BEEN UNEMPLOYED FOR 18 MONTHS, I HAVE NOT HAD THE CAR TOWED TO THE DEALER FOR AN ESTIMATE OF ACTUAL DAMAGE.

BASICALLY EVERYTHING MAJOR ON THE FRONT HAS FAILED. MY WARRANTY WOULDN'T COVER BECAUSE THEY SAID IT'S NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR. I HAVE A 2000 IMPALA VIN# [XXX]. I HAVE BEEN HEARING A NOISE FROM THE STEERING COLUMN AND EVERYTIME I PUSH THE GAS THE STEERING WHEEL TURNS TO THE LEFT. I HAVE GOT THE THIRD STEERING COLUMN, THIRD SET OF TIRES AND A NEW CRADLE. THE PROBLEM STARTED AT 4437 MILES AND HAS CONTINUED YET @ 37204 MILES. HAVE BEEN TO MANY DEALERS, CONTACTED GM AND NOW HAVE A BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU COMPLAINT FILED. THE DEALERS TOLD ME IT WAS THE TIRES AND THE TIRE DEALERS TOLD ME IT WAS THE CAR. IN 4000 MILES MY TIRES WENT FROM 9/32" TO 3/32" WEAR. THE "KLUNK" IN THE FRONT END IS STILL THERE. THE VEHICLE LIKES TO "WANDER" DOWN THE ROAD WITH VIBRATIONS FELT IN THE STEERING WHEEL. THE SERVICE MANAGER TOOK IT ON MANY TEST DRIVES AND CONTACTED THE REGIONAL MANAGER=WHO SAID "NOT ANOTHER DIME IN THIS CAR". I WAS ESCORTED TO THE SALES DEPARTMENT AND INTRODUCED TO A SALESMAN FOR PURPOSES OF TRADING THE VEHICLE IN. THE OFFER WAS LESS THAN NADA TRADE VALUE. I HAVE CONTACTED GM'S ASSISTANCE LINE MANY TIMES AND JUST GOT THE "RUN AROUND" WITH OPERATORS DOCUMENTING CONVERSATION AND NO ONE WOULD LET ME TALK TO A "REAL" SUPERVISOR. ALL I WANTED TO DO WAS ASK FOR A FAIR SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEMS THAT THE DEALERS AND GM KNOW THAT THEY HAVE. MY VEHICLE IS NOW OUT OF WARRANTY WITH THE SAME PROBLEMS SINCE I BOUGHT IT. AT APPROXIMATELY 1815 23 AUGUST 2001, HER GRANDSON ENTERED THE LEFT PASSENGER SEAT, CLIMBED INTO THE FRONT SEAT OVER THE CONSOLE SLIPPED AGAINST THE SHIFTING LEVER (ON THE STEERING COLUMN) WITH HIS RIGHT ELBOW. THE CAR STARTED MOVING. HE TRIED TO STOP THE CAR BY PUSHING ON THE "MIDDLE" PEDAL. HE STATED HE COULDN'T STOP THE CAR AND THAT IT HIT A TREE ON THE RIGHT FENDER, BOUNCED OVER AND INTO THE DITCH, AND KEPT GOING INTO ANOTHER DITCH. THE SECOND DITCH (THE ADJACENT YARDS OF THE THREE PROPERTIES INVOLVED WERE DOWNHILL SLOPES.), THE LEFT WHEELS HIT A SLIGHT EMBANKMENT, TURNING THE CAR TO THE LEFT, SLOWING THE VEHICLE SOME. A NEIGHBOR MOVING HIS LAWN WAS PERSUING THE CAR, AND STATED HE INSTRUCTED THE BOY TO UNLOCK THE DOORS, WHILE STILL IN MOTION AND WHEN THE BOY COMPLIED, OPENED THE DOOR AND APPLIED THE BRAKES. THE CAR HIT A CEDAR POST AND BIRD FEEDER BEFORE BEING STOPPED.THERE WERE NO KEYS IN THE CAR. THE NIEGHBOR STATED HE TRIED TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL TO LOCK THE WHEELS BUT IT DIDN'T LOCK. THE BOY LATER COMPLAINED OF A HEADACHE AND WAS TAKEN TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM AND TREATED FOR A MILD CLOSED HEAD INJURY. THE POLICE WERE NOTIFIED, AND WERE ADVISED TO NOTIFY/DEALER/MANUFACTURER. VEHICLE PULLS TO THE LEFT WHEN BRAKES ARE APPLIED. FRONT BRAKES AND ROTORS WERE REPLACED IN SEPTEMBER 1999, CONTINUED TO HAVE PROBLEM, A FRONT END ALIGNMENT WAS PREFORMED TO SEE IF THAT WOULD CORRECT THE PULL BUT IT DIDN'T. TOOK CAR BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP. *AK
