FAILURE OF WINDSHIELD WIPERS. FIRST THEY WOULD ONLY WORK IF IT WASN'T RAINING (CLEANING WINDSHIELD), NOW THEY HAVE STOPPED ALL TOGETHER. THIS HAS CAUSED INCIDENCE OF BEING STRANDED AND NEAR CRASHES EVEN ON CHRISTMAS DAY WITH MY TWO CHILDREN AND HAVING TO GET RIDES TO AND FROM WORK. THERE IS A RECALL ON THIS FOR ALL OTHER 1995 CHEVROLETS BUT NOT THE APV SEEMS AS THOUGH SINCE THIS PROBLEM IS OCCURRING ON THIS VEHICLE THE RECALL SHOULD BE ON IT ALSO. I COULD HEAR THE MOTOR TRYING TO WORK AND WOULD SOMETIMES BE ABLE TO MANUALLY PUSH THE WIPERS BACK AND FORTH TO GET THEM WORKING AGAIN, BUT NOW THEY ARE LOCKED UP. *JB

WINDSHIELD WIPERS ONLY WORK WHEN THEY WANT TO. ON GOING PROBLEM SINCE I BOUGHT VAN. CHEVY SAYS NO RECALL WAS ISSUED AND IT'S NOT THEIR PROBLEM. I HAVE REPLACED THE MOTOR AND STILL HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. I CAN NOT DRIVE IF IT IS RAINING DUE TO WIPERS MAY WORK BUT THEY COULD STOP WORKING AGAIN AT ANY TIME. ALSO WIPER FLUID DOES NOT WORK WHEN WIPERS DO NOT WORK. I CAN NOT TELL YOU HOW MANY FAILURES DUE TO IT HAPPENS EVERYTIME IT RAINS/SNOWS/SLEETS. MEANING THEY MAY WORK OR MAY NOT BUT IF THEY DO WORK THEY ALWAYS STOP. *JB

WHEN I BOUGHT MY VAN IN MAY OF 2004 I BEGAN HAVING PROBLEMS WITH MY WINDSHIELD WIPERS ONLY WORKING SPORADICALLY, I THOUGHT I WOULD CHECK INTO IT AND SEE IF MIGHT BE A RECALL REGARDING MY VEHICLE. WHEN I WENT ONLINE TO SEARCH I FOUND THE EXACT PROBLEM I WAS HAVING AND CHECKED TO SEE IF I WAS COVERED, I DISCOVERED MULTIPLE GM RECALLS THAT COVERED THE PROBLEM I WAS HAVING, AND ONLINE IT SEEMED AS THOUGH MY VAN QUALIFIED. WHEN I PHONED A DEALER WITH MY VIN #, I WAS TOLD I WAS NOT COVERED UNDER THE RECALL. I BELIEVE THAT MY VEHICLE IS EXPERIENCING THE SAME PROBLEM COVERED BY THE RECALL OF THOUSANDS OF OTHER GM VEHICLES. ALSO, I HAVE REPLACED THE WIND SHIELD WIPER MOTOR AND STILL HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. *JB

REF: NHTSA RECALL NO. 97V017000 SOME OF THESE VEHICLES HAVE A STRAINED OR SEPARATED WINDSHIELD WASHER/WIPER SWITCH WIRE. THIS CAN CAUSE THE WINDSHIELD WASHER/WIPER TO WORK INTERMITTENTLY AND COULD ULTIMATELY RESULT IN INOPERATIVE WIPERS. THIS HAS OCCURRED TWICE DURING OPERATION OF MY VEHICLE WHILE DRIVING ON INTERSTATE HIGHWAYS AND NEEDING THE WIPERS DURING A SUDDEN RAIN STORM. FIVE MINUTES LATER THE WIPERS WOULD BE WORKING AGAIN. 1995 CHEVROLET LUMINA APV DRIVERS SIDE SEAT TRACK/FRAME BREAKS, CAUSING THE BACK OF THE SEAT TO RECLINE SUDDENLY. I HAD A 1994 CHEVROLET LUMINA APV WHICH WAS INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT IN FEBUARY OF 2001, IN WHICH THE SEAT TRACK/FRAME BROKE. MINE JUST BROKE WHILE I WAS DRIVING. WINDSHIELD WIPERS HAVE FAILED SEVERAL INTERMITANT TIMES. FIRST TIME IN 1998 AT 70 MILES PER HOUR IN A RAIN STORM, WIPERS STOPPED, TOOK CAR OFF CRUISE THEN THE RESUMED. SEVERAL INTERMITENT TIMES AFTERWARD. DEALER WANTED $400 + TO "FIX" MOTER. I WAS SCEPTICAL BECUASE THIS IS NOT THE ONLY GM CAR I HAVE DRIVEN WITH WIPER TROUBLE. LAST BIG INCIDENT WAS LAST FALL 1999 WHEN THE WIPERS STOPPED ON THE INTERSTATE WITH MY PREGNANT WIFE AND CHILD IN CAR -200 MILES FROM HOME. I COULD NOT GET THEM TO RESUME. CHECKED FUSE ETC. WAITED OUT STORM UNDER BRIDGE, PROCEDED TO TRUCK STOP AND BOUGHT RAIN-X TO CONTINUE JOURNEY. WHEN I GOT TO DESTINATION I PULLED THE WIPER MOTOR AND IT CHECKED OUT FINE AND THE SWITCH-OK. INTERMITENT TROUBLES ARE HARD TO GET FIXED! I TOOK WIPER MOTOR APART, CLEANED BRUSHES, AND NOTICED SOME BUILD-UP ON THE COMMUNICATOR DISC, AND CONTACTS FOR THE PARKING MECHANISM. CLEANED THIS WITH LIGHT ABRASIVE -REASEMBLED AND HAVE HAD NO PROBLEM SINCE, ALTHOUGH WITH THE WIPER'S HISTORY I NOW USE RAIN-X ALL THE TIME. I AM AFRAID TO TRAVEL IN SNOW WITH KIDS IN VEHICLE. I WOULD LIKE TO SELL IT BUT WITH THE WIPER SYSTEM TROUBLES, AND THE COOLING SYSTEM THAT KEEPS LEAKING -NEW RADIATOR, WATER PUMP, AND HEAD GASKET -MECHANICS SAY PINK COOLANT IS CORROSIVE. INABILITY TO STOP MOVING VEHICLE CAUSING AN ACCIDENT. THIS VEHICLE IS A 1995 CHEVY LUMINA MINIVAN. DRIVING 55 (POSTED SPEED LIMIT) DOWN A RURAL HIGHWAY AND APPROACHING STOP SIGN, THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT SLOW DOWN FAST ENOUGH TO MAKE THE STOP, FORCING EVASIVE ACTION BY DRIVER AND AN ONCOMING, CROSS TRAFFIC VEHICLE. VEHICLE GOING CROSS TRAFFIC EVADED THE HIT BY SWERVING AND SUBSEQUENTLY HITTING A TELEPHONE POLE. NEITHER DRIVER SUFFERED SIGNIFICANT INJURY. UPON INVESTIGATION, IT WAS FOUND THAT THE THROTTLE ON THE VAN WAS STUCK, CAUSING THE INABILITY TO DOWN SHIFT OUT OF GEAR AND SLOW THE VEHICLE QUICKLY ENOUGH TO MAKE THE STOP. THE BRAKES WERE FOUND TO HAVE 75% AVAILABLE PAD AND WERE IN EXCELLENT WORKING ORDER. THE ANTILOCK BRAKE SYSTEM WAS FOUND TO BE IN WORKING ORDER, RESPONDING APPROPRIATELY UNDER CIRCUMSTANCE. THE TRANSMISSION IN THIS VAN WAS COMPLETELY REBUILT BY A REPUTABLE TRANSMISSION REBUILDER WHO IS REGISTERED WITH THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION REBUILDERS ASSOCIATION IN OCTOBER 2002. A THROTTLE PROBLEM OCCURRED SHORTLY AFTER THE TRANSMISSION WAS REBUILT, AND THE PROBLEM WAS FIXED UNDER WARRANTY. THAT PARTICULAR TIME THERE WAS SIMPLY A SHUDDER WHEN GOING FROM 4TH TO 5TH GEAR, AND THERE WAS NO THREAT TO SAFETY KNOWN. THE VAN WORKED PROPERLY UNTIL THE DATE OF THE INCIDENT WHICH IS THE CAUSE OF THIS COMPLAINT.

THE WIPERS WILL JUST QUIT AT RANDOM. THIS HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES. THE HEATER CORE STARTED LEAKING AND HAD TO BE REPLACED. BOTH BALL JOINTS WENT BAD AROUND 30,000 MILES, ONE UNDER WARRANTY, ONE JUST AFTER 36.000 MILES. THE POWER STEERING PUMP STARTED LEAKING AT THE PUMP SHAFT AND MADE A REAL MESS OF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT BEFORE IT WAS REPLACED. AND I DIDN'T REPORT YET THAT THE INTAKE MANIFOLD STARTED LEAKING OIL RECENTLY AND IS UNDER REPAIR RIGHT NOW. THIS VEHICLE HAS NEEDED ALOT OF REPAIRS THAT A QUALITY PRODUCT WOULDN'T HAVE HAD.*AK

I PURCHASED THE USED 1995 CHEVY MINIVAN IN NOVEMBER 1997. EXACTLY 30 DAYS TO THE DATE OF THE SALE MY WIFE WAS DRIVING THE MINIVAN ON A PARKWAY WHICH HAD NO BREAKDOWN LANE. SHE HEARD A VERY LOUD STRANGE NOISE COMING FROM THE VEHICLE. SHE GOT OFF THE PARKWAY AT THE NEXT EXIT AND PULLED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. BY THE TIME SHE WAS ABLE TO GET TO A SAFE PLACE TO PARK THE NOISE HAD STOPPED. SHE WALKED AROUND THE VEHICLE LOOKING FOR ANYTHING OUT OF ORDER AND SAW NOTHING. SHE GOT BACK IN THE VAN AND BEGAN DRIVING, THE NOISE STILL HAD NOT RETURNED. AS SHE WAS ABOUT TO GET BACK ON THE PARKWAY THE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL OF THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY FLEW OFF OF THE VEHICLE. SHE WATCHED THE TIRE GO STRAIGHT UP INTO THE AIR, "VERY HIGH" AND CAME DOWN BOUNCING ON THE STREET IN FRONT OF THE VAN AND THEN GOING TO THE SIDE OF A ROAD AND ROLLING UP AN EMBANKMENT BEFORE IT STOPPED. WHEN THE TIRE FLEW OFF THE VAN SLAMMED DOWN INTO THE STREET WITH GREAT FORCE. THE IMPACT OF THE WHEEL FLYING OFF AS WELL AS THE VAN SLAMMING INTO THE STREET CAUSED THE ENTIRE SIDE PANEL OF THE RIGHT FRONT SIDE OF THE VAN FROM THE DOOR TO THE HEADLIGHT TO SHATTER ALL OVER THE STREET. THE VAN WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER WHICH IS WAS PURCHASED FROM 30 DAYS EARLIER AND WE WERE TOLD BY THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT THAT THERE WAS A "DEFECT IN THE LUG NUTS" WHICH CAUSED THE WHEEL TO FLY OFF. EACH LUG NUT HAD MADE A CLEAN BREAK CAUSING THE WHEEL TO FLY OFF. PLEASE LET US KNOW IF YOU HAVE RECEIVED ANY OTHER COMPLAINTS FOR THIS TYPE OF INCIDENT.*AK

CAR WAS WORKING FINE ON 10/15, WENT OUT TO START CAR ON 10/16, AND IT WAS COMPLETELY DEAD, TOWING COMPANY UNABLE TO JUMP START VEHICLE, WOULD CRANK BUT NOT TURN OVER. HAD VEHICLE TOWED TO MECHANIC, WHO FOUND COOLANT HOSE CONNECTOR, HAD CRACKED AND WAS SPRAYING THE ALTERNATOR WITH COOLANT, CAUSING IT TO SHORT OUT, AND SEND SPIKES OF ELECTRICITY THROUGH MY SYSTEM. THUS FAR HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THE IGNITION MODULE, CAM SENSOR, AND MULTIPLE BURNT FUSIBLE LINK WIRES. STILL HAVING "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" LIGHT ON, AND MECHANIC FEELS WILL ALSO HAVE TO REPLACE THE COMPUTER, DUE TO QUAD DRIVER CODES PRESENT WHEN CHECKED BY HIS COMPUTER. I FIND IT INTERESTING THAT THE LOCAL DEALER, NOT ONLY HAD THIS COOLANT HOSE CONNECTOR, IN STOCK, BUT ALSO THAT THE PART, WHICH WAS MADE OF PLASTIC ORIGINALLY, IS NOW MADE OF A HEAVY METAL. I AM CURIOUS IF THERE HAVE BEEN OTHER REPORTS OF THIS TYPE OF FAILURE. HAS SO FAR COST ME $700 TO REPLACE THESE FAILED PARTS, AND WILL PROBABLY BE ANOTHER $300 TO $400 FOR THE COMPUTER I AM TOLD.*AK

THE ELECTRIC WIPERS AND WINDOWS HAVE REFUSED ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS TO OPERATE WHEN RAINING, MAKING IT EITHER IMPOSSIBLE TO TRAVEL IN THE RAIN OR VERY DANGEROUS WHEN THERE WAS NO CHOICE BUT TO CONTINUE ON.
