I BACKED THE VAN OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY AT HOME AND PLACED THE CAR INTO DRIVE. AS I STARTED TO MOVE FORWARD, THE GAS PEDAL FELT HARDER THAN NORMAL BUT I ATTRIBUTED THAT TO BEING LEFT OUTSIDE ALL WINTER. I PUSHED THE GAS PEDAL HARDER TO GET TO CAR TO MOVE FORWARD. AND IMMEDIATELY I FELT THE PEDAL UNSTICK . AT THAT SAME MOMENT, THE ENGINE RACED TO FULL THROTTLE AND RACED FORWARD WITH THE VAN CONTINUALLY GOING FASTER AND FASTER RACING INSTANTLY TO 50 MILES AN HOUR AND STILL ACCELERATING. AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SUDDEN ACCELERATION, I TRIED TO APPLY THE BRAKES BUT COULD NOT STOP THE VAN OR STOP THE ACCELERATION. I TURNED OFF THE IGNITION AND FINALLY BRAKED THE VAN TO A STOP. THIS ALL HAPPENED ON THE SIDE STREET OF MY SUBDIVISION BEFORE I COULD GET ONTO THE MAIN ROAD. LUCKILY THERE WERE NO CARS OR PEOPLE IN MY WAY AND I WAS ABLE TO GET CONTROL OF THE VAN WITHOUT HURTING MYSELF OR OTHERS, THE VAN WAS BROUGHT BACK TO MY DRIVEWAY WHERE IT REMAINS. I HAVE NOT CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP AT THIS POINT AS I DO NOT WANT TO PAY TO HAVE THIS 12 YEAR OLD VAN REPAIRED AT MY COST NOR DO I EVER WANT TO DRIVE THIS VAN AGAIN. *TR

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1998 CHEVROLET VENTURE. WHILE IDLING IN TRAFFIC OR ON AN INCLINE, THE HEAT TEMPERATURE GAUGE FLUCTUATES. THE VEHICLE IS ALSO LOSING ANTIFREEZE. THE CONTACT HAS BEEN ADDING ONE HALF GALLON OF ANTIFREEZE PER MONTH AND DOES NOT KNOW WHY. WHEN THE WEATHER BECOMES WARMER, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATES SPORADICALLY. THE LIGHT DOES NOT ILLUMINATE IN THE WINTER. THE PURCHASE DATE AND POWERTRAIN WERE UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 160,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 130,000.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1998 CHEVY VENTURE. WHILE DRIVING 35 MPH THE VEHICLE SHUT OFF WHEN APPROACHING A TRAFFIC LIGHT OR STOP SIGN. THE CONTACT WAS UNABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE. IT WAS TOWED TO THE MECHANIC, WHO WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE AUSE OF THE PROBLEM , AND RECOMMENDED THE VEHICLE BE DIAGNOSED BY THE DEALER. THE DEALER INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THERE WAS A BAR INSIDE THE ENGINE THAT BROKE, AND THEREWAS ALSO CORROSION IN THE ENGINE. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE ENGINE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE CURRENTLY HAS 14, 4000 MILES. *AK

VENTURE WAS MAKING A SMELL THAT I REMEMBERED FROM MY 95 CHEVY LUMINA. PULL OVER REALIZED THE SAME THING WAS GOING ON WITH THIS VAN. COOLANT GOING INTO ENGINE. THIS VAN ONLY HAD 51,652 MILES ON FOR A 98 THAT IS GREAT I TOOK VERY GOOD CARE OF IT AND CHEVY LOST A CUSTOMER FOR LIFE. WE WERE LOOKING A TAHOE BUT I WOULD EVEN LOOK AT IT NOW CHEVY IS THE WORST CAR MAKER OUT THERE BUT THEN AGAIN THEY ARE MAKING ME NOW LOOK A TOYOTA,HONDA IN A WHOLE NEW LIGHT. *NM

THE INTAKE GASKET ON MY 98 VENTURE FAILED AND LEAKED DEXCOOL INTO THE ENGINE. THE ENGINE TEMP FLUCTUATED AND THE VEHICLE OVERHEATED DAMAGING THE HEAD GASKET. I SEE GM IS IGNORING THE ISSUE AS WELL AS NHTSA. THERE IS HOWEVER A LAW FIRM IN PUTTING TOGETHER A CLASS ACTION SUIT FOR THIS PROBLEM. I ENCOURAGE ALL TO JOIN IN THE SUIT AND TO LEAVE GM AND BECOME LOYAL HONDA OWNERS. *JB

1998 CHEVROLET VENTURE HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY. CONSTANT CONDENSATION/MOISTURE INSIDE DRIVE AND PASSENGER SIDE UNITS CAUSING A FOGGY OR BURNED EFFECT AND RENDERING HEADLIGHTS VIRTUALLY USELESS. AFTER MANY YEARS, I'VE NOTICED MANY DIFFERENT MODEL YEARS OF THE VENTURE AND ITS OLDSMOBILE COUSIN HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. MY HEADLIGHT LENSES HAVE FALLEN OFF ON THREE SEPARATE OCCASIONS. THIS IS CLEARLY A FAULTY DESIGN AS THE LENSES ARE MERELY GLUED ON THE FRONT OF THE HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY. BECAUSE OF THE GLUE WEARING AWAY ON THE HEADLIGHT COVER, WATER GETS INTO THE ASSEMBLY AND CAUSES THE HALOGEN LIGHTS TO SHORT OUT. THIS TO ME IS A VERY SERIOUS PROBLEM. I THINK THAT THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD ADMIT TO THIS AND RECALL THE VANS AND REPLACE WITH A NEW DESIGN. WHY DOES IT ALWAYS TAKE SOMEONE'S DEATH AND A LAWSUIT TO GET SOMETHING TAKEN CARE OF. I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THE LIGHTS THREE TIMES. THE LAST TIME I PUT DUCT TAPE AROUND THE OUTSIDE OF THE LENSES TO KEEP THEM ON. WHY SHOULD I HAVE TO DO THAT??? *JB

I OWN A 1998 CHEVY VENTURE MINIVAN AND ON THE DATE SPECIFIED I WAS OUT WITH MY FAMILY ( A SNOWY EVENING) WHEN I WENT TO APPLY THE BRAKES AND MY TURN SIGNALS ON MY DASH WENT TO A SOLID GREEN. AS I APPROACHED THE RED LIGHT A PERSON IN THE CAR NEXT TO ME ADVISED ME THAT I HAD NO TAILLIGHTS. AFTER GETTING HOME I DID SOME RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET AND FOUND THAT THIS IS A WIDESPREAD PROBLEM WHERE IF MOISTURE GETS INTO THE CONNECTOR ON THE BRAKE LIGHT ASSEMBLY, IT WILL CAUSE THE GROUND CONNECTOR TO SHORT OUT AND CAUSE THE BRAKE LIGHTS TO DO SOME CRAZY THINGS AS WELL AS THE CRUISE CONTROL TO DISENGAGE AT CERTAIN TIMES. *NM

THERE IS A NHTSA RECALL, # 02V286000, REGARDING THE STEERING RACK AND PINION. THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THE MANUFACTURER HAS BEEN ALERTED.

CONSUMER STATES VAN WILL CRANK BUT WILL NOT START, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON AND THE VEHICLE STALLED AT LEAST 20 TIMES. FUEL PUMP WAS REPLACED 4 TIMES. DEALERSHIP INSPECTED AND REPORTED ORIGINAL PROBLEM WAS NO FUEL PRESSURE TRACED TO NO OPERATION OF FUEL PUMP. FOUND WIRING HARNESS AT FUEL PUMP HAD COME LOOSE. AFTER HARNESS WAS RECONNECTED THE VAN STARTED RIGHT UP. ADVISED THAT CONNECTOR 305 AND GROUND 301 HAVE A HISTORY OF INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS AND ITNERNAL OPENS THAT CAUSE NO START CONDITIONS. *TT

AT MORNING START UP I SMELLED GAS. CHECKED UNDER VAN AND SAW PUDDLE OF GAS IN MIDDLE. TOOK VAN TO CHEV. DEALER AND FOUND GAS LINE LEAKING. LEAK IS ONLY ABOUT 18 INCHES AWAY FROM CATALYTIC CONVERTER. IF WIND WAS BOWLING JUST RIGHT A FIRE COULD START. THIS IS 1998 CHEV. VENTURE WITH 13000 MILES. THIS IS THE FORTH TIME I HAVE HEARD OF THIS PROBLEM. *JB

THE "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" LIGHT CAME UP ONE MORNING. A CERTIFIED FRIEND MECHANIC CHECKED IT OUT AT HOME WITH HIS ENGINE ANALYZER/COMPUTER & FOUND NOTHING WRONG. HE THEN CHECKED OUT THE GAS CAP IF SECURE. AFTER AWHILE, THE LIGHT WENT OFF. I STILL CAN'T BELIEVE IT WAS THE GAS CAP BECAUSE I'M VERY CAREFUL ABOUT LOOSE GAS CAPS. ANYWAY, AFTER 2 DAYS OF DRIVING, THE LIGHT CAME OUT AGAIN. BEFOREHAND, HE SUGGESTED TO HAVE THE GAS CAP REPLACED IF THIS HAPPENS AGAIN. SO I CHANGED IT & HAVE BEEN DRIVING AROUND FOR ALMOST 3 WEEKS NOW BUT THE LIGHT IS STILL THERE. SOMEBODY SAID THAT IT MIGHT TAKE A COUPLE OF GAS TANK REFILLS BEFORE THE GAS CAP GET "CROSS-THREADED" OR SEALED TIGHT. I ALREADY HAD 2 REFILLS & THE LIGHT'S STILL THERE. THE VAN'S RUNNING WELL & AM EXPERIENCING NO PROBLEMS WHATSOEVER. I JUST WANT TO HAVE THAT LIGHT TURNED OFF.

FUEL TANK "THUD" HEARD FROM UNDERNEATH VEHICLE A SECOND OR TWO AFTER COMING TO A STOP. LOUDEST WHEN TANK IS 1/2 TO 3/4 FULL. TAKEN TO DEALER TWO TIMES WHILE UNDER WARRANTY. NO REPAIR MADE. NOW WITH 80,000 MILES ON VEHICLE, WE HAVE TAKEN IT IN AGAIN AND SHOWN THE DEALER A "TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN" FROM NHTSA.COM SHOWING CERTAIN 1998 VIN #'S NEED NEW FUEL TANKS. DEALER TOLD ME MY VEHICLE DIDN'T APPLY. TWO WEEKS LATER I RETURNED AND DROVE VEHICLE W/SERVICE MANAGER. HE FINALLY AGREED THAT THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH MY TANK AND WILL FIX/REPLACE. I OWN A 1998 CHEVROLET VENTURE LS VAN. THE HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLIES' SEALS DON'T KEEP THEM FROM FILLING FROM WATER CAUSING THE LIGHTS (HEADLIGHTS AND TURN SIGNALS) TO SHORT OUT. FURTHER, DUE TO THE KNOWINGLY DEFECTIVE ASSEMBLIES, THE HEADLIGHT CRYSTALS POP OFF (DUE TO THE POOR SEAL). THIS OCCURRED TO ME WHILE I WAS DRIVING AND I SUBSEQUENTLY RAN OVER THE CRYSTAL SPRAYING DEBRIS BEHIND ME. IN CONTACTING CHEVROLET CUSTOMER SERVICE CENTER'S TOLL FREE NUMBER, THEY SAID THAT THERE IS NO RECALL FOR THIS DEFECTIVE SAFETY EQUIPMENT AND THEY DON'T SEE A PROBLEM WITH THESE SCENARIOS. IN DOING FURTHER RESEARCH, I'VE DISCOVERED THAT THESE DEFECTIVE ASSEMBLIES WERE VERY COMMON, CHEVROLET HAS IN FACT ISSUED A TSB HIGHLIGHTING THIS COMMONLY KNOWN DEFECT, AND IN TALKING WITH A CHEVROLET DEALERSHIP SERVICE WRITER HE RELATED THAT HE HAS SEEN FAR MORE OF THESE PROBLEMS THAN HE WOULD LIKE TO EVER SEE. DOES THE NTSB CONSIDER FULLY FUNCTIONAL HEADLIGHTS AND TURN SIGNALS TO BE NECESSARY SAFETY EQUIPMENT? HOW ABOUT HEADLIGHT CRYSTALS FLYING OFF VEHICLES WHILE IN OPERATION? *NLM

THIS IS A PART THAT FAILED AGAIN AFTER REPLACEMENT BY RECALL NHTSA # 01V067000 & 01V264000. REPLACED PART HAS FAILED CAUSING DOOR TO NOT FULLY LATCH AT TIMES. GM CONTACTED BY OWNER - GM EMPLOYEE - LEMONT BARLOW (866) 942-4368 HAS ADVISED OWNER THAT SINCE PART WA S REPLACED UNDER RECALL AND ONE YEAR HAS PASSED, GM NO LONGER WILL PROVIDE ANY REPAIRS. DEALER HAS DIAGNOSED (IN WRITING TO OWNER) REPLACED ACTUATOR AS BEING DEFECTIVE. MR

I AM SURPRISED NO TSB EXISTS FOR THIS PROBLEM THAT I CAN FIND. MY 1998 CHEVROLET VENTURE VAN HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE HEADLIGHT - THE LENS ON THE HEADLIGHT HOUSING FELL OFF! DISCUSSING THE ISSUE WITH A NUMBER OF AUTOMOTIVE PROFESSIONALS, I LEARNED THIS IS APPARENTLY A COMMON OCCURRENCE. NOW IF THE LENS FALLS OFF, THE HEADLIGHT BULB IS EXPOSED AND CAN EASILY BE DAMAGED AND NOT FUNCTION - IS THIS NOT A SAFETY CONCERN? SHOULD NOT THIS ISSUE BE ADDRESSED AS A POSSIBLE THREAT TO SAFETY IN THE OPERATION OF A MOTOR VEHICLE? THANK YOU.

WHILE DRIVING ON THE HUTCHINSON RIVER PARKWAY AT ABOUT 2:30 PM WITH MY FAMILY, MY WIFE HEARD A NOISE FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE CAR. TO OUR HORROR, WE SAW CARS BEHIND US SWERVING TO AVOID A TIRE WHICH WAS SKIDDING ALONG THE ROAD. WE IMMEDIATELY EXITED AND, UPON LOOKING UNDER OUR 1998 CHEVROLET VENTURE MINIVAN, SAW NEITHER OUR SPARE TIRE, NOR THE PLATE THAT HELD IN PLACE. IT APPEARED AS IF THE CABLE THAT HELD THE TIRE IN PLACE HAD COMPLETELY AND CATASTROPHICALLY FAILED, RESULTING IN A POTENTIALLY DEADLY SITUATION. FORTUNATELY FOR EVERYONE INVOLVED THE PAVEMENT WAS (FOR THE MOMENT) DRY, IT WAS DAYTIME, THE DRIVERS BEHIND WERE NOT TAILGATING (AS IS CUSTOMARY ON THE HUTCH) AND THE TIRE CAME TO REST ON THE MEDIAN, OUT OF THE LANES OF TRAFFIC. WE LOOPED BACK AND FOUND THE WHEEL ON THE MEDIAN AND, WHILE WE WERE TRYING TO DECIDE WHOM TO CALL TO REPORT THE INCIDENT (AAA, LOCAL POLICE, ETC) A WESTCHESTER COUNTY POLICE OFFICER STOPPED TO HELP US. HE BRIEFLY STOPPED TRAFFIC AND REMOVED THE WHEEL SO THAT NO ONE WOULD HIT IT. AS FAR AS WE COULD TELL, NO ONE WAS INJURED AND THERE WAS NO MAJOR PROPERTY DAMAGE AS A RESULT OF THE INCIDENT (WE HAVE YET TO DETERMINE HOW MUCH IT WILL COST TO REPAIR THE WHEEL AND THE SPARE TIRE HOUSING). UPON SEARCHING THIS SITE, WE HAVE NOTICED THAT A VERY SIMILAR PROBLEM HAS ALREADY BEEN REPORTED (A SPARE TIRE CABLE THAT HAS BECOME VERY CORRODED) AND BELIEVE OUR EXPERIENCE NOT TO BE AN ISOLATED EVENT, ESPECIALLY IN AREAS WHERE SALT IS COMMONLY USED IN THE WINTER TO KEEP THE ROADS CLEAR OF ICE. WATER BUILD UP INTO THE FRONT HEAD LIGHTS AND WATER BUILD UP IN THE ENGINE. HAD TO REPLACE LIGHTS AND ENGINE AFTER LIGHTS WERE REPLACED WE HAD TO DRILL A HOLD BELOW THE LIGHT COVERS SO THAT WATER BUILD UP CAN DRAIN FROM HOLE. HAD TO REPLACE THE ENGINE.

AFTER MUCH RESEARCH WITH AREA GM DEALERSHIPS AND YOUR WEBSITE, IT APPERS THAT THE 1998 VENTURE MINI-VAN'S INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKET DEVELOPS A LEAK AT 80000 TO 90000 MILES. I HAD THIS REPLACEMENT IN MAY 2002. SINCE MY VAN WAS OUT OF WARRENTY BY 1000 MILES (IT WAS SHY 2 WEEKS OF BEING 4 YEARS OLD). I SPOKE WITH GM'S CUSTOMER SERVICE AND THEY STATED THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO ABOUT IT. EVEN THOUGH I HAVE MAINTAINED MY VEHICLE ON SCHEDULE FOR ALL TUNE-UP/OIL CHANGES/TIRE ROTATIONS, ETC. I ENDED UP PAYING $575.00 TO HAVE THE INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKET REPLACED. SINCE THEN MY VAN HAS NEVER BEEN THE SAME. IT IS NOW IN THE SHOP IN NEED OF A WHOLE NEW ENGINE WITH ONLY 82000 MILES. IT SEEMS A PISTON ROD SPUN AND DAMAGED THE CRANK SHAFT. AFTER MUCH INVESTIGATION, I WAS TOLD THAT THE PROBLEM WITH THE INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKET COULD HAVE CAUSED ALL OF THIS. NOW I AM FACED WITH REPLACING THE WHOLE ENGINE WITH AN USED ENGINE WITH 4,000 MILES FOR $2400 + TAX, GETTING A REMANUFACTURED ENGINE FOR $3865 OR TRADING IN THE CAR. I DO BELIEVE AN INVESTIGATION IN THE LEAKING OF THE INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKET SHOULD DEFINATELY BE PURSUED. I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE ANY ASSISTANCE. FOR THE HEADLIGHT, MY HEADLIGHT LENS FALL OFF WHILE I WAS DRIVEN ON A HIGHWAY GOING ABOUT 55 MPH. I NEVER COULD FOUND THE LENS AND LUCKY THE LENS FLYING OFF DID NOT CAUSE A CRASH. I CONTACTED THE GM ASSISTANCE PROGRAM AND ONCE AGAIN WAS TOLD THERE WAS NOTHING COULD BE DONE TO ASSIST US. THIS WASN'T A KNOWN PROBLEM. AFTER INVESTIGATING AGAIN, I SEE THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM. 1998 CHEVY VENTURE, ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON, PULLED OVER ENGINE TAPPING & SMOKING. NO OIL LIGHT OR CHANGE IN TEMP, GAUGE OBSERVED. HAD TO WALK ON INTERSTATE 1.2 MILES TOOK RIDE FROM UNKNOWN COUPLE, HAD VAN TOWED. DIAGNOSES WAS: INTAKE GASKET COLLAPSED, CAUSING CONNECTING ROD TO GO THROUGH ENGINE. DEALERSHIP & GM CUSTOMER CARE REFUSED ANY ASSISTANCE. OVERWELMED BY SEVERITY OF THIS GASKET PROBLEM READILY AVAILABLE ON THE INTERNET. WE REPLACED OUR ENGINE WITH A USED ONE, THAT IS ALL WE COULD AFFORD. IT DEFINITELY WAS THE FAULTY GASKET THAT CAUSED OUR ENGINE TO BE REPLACED. WHEN THIS FIRST HAPPENED, NO DUMMY LIGHT CAME ON, NOTHING TO EVEN TELL ME THERE WAS A PROBLEM, SUCH AS LOW OIL OR SERVICE ENGINE. THE MECHANIC WHO REPLACED OUR ENGINE TOLD US HE HAS SEEN SEVERAL CHEVY VENTURE VANS WITH THE SAME EXACT PROBLEM WE HAD. WE HAD THE SERVIVE DONE AT D&N GARAGE 4929 SOUTH M-76 WEST BRANCH, MI 48661, THE OWNER IS NELSON SMITH. THE PHONE # IS 1 800 203 8504. IT COST US ALMOST $1600. TO REPLACE THE ENGINE, WE LUCKED OUT FINDING ONE THAT HAD ONLY 40,000 MILES ON IT. NELSON MADE SURE TO PUT THE NEW GASKET ON THIS ENGINE. THE GM DEALERSHIP HERE REFUSED TO HELP. WHERE WE BOUGHT THE VAN REFUSED TO HELP, THE GM HELPLINE JUST VERY RUDELY TOLD ME IT WAS MY PROBLEM.

REAR WINDOW ON VEHICLE BLEW OUT. *MR IN 2001 THE REAR WINDOW HAD TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE IT HAD BLOWN OUT. IN 2003, THE SAME WINDOW HAD BLOWN OUT AGAIN WHICH WAS THE ORIGINAL FROM GM. THERE WAS NO SEAL AROUND THE ORIGINAL WINDOW. THE LOWER INTAKE MANIFOLD SEAL HAD TO BE REPLACED BY GM IN WHICH THEY COVERED HALF THE COST. THERE WERE OTHER CHEVROLET'S WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. THE "PRETENSIONER" OF THE SEATBELT SYSTEM ON MY 1998 CHEVROLET VENTURE HAS FAILED NOW FOR THE THIRD TIME. ACCORDING TO THE DEALER THIS MEANS THE RESTRAINT SYSTEM WILL NOT FUNCTION PROPERLY IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH. THE ALERT LIGHT THAT WARNS OF TROUBLE IN THE AIR BAG SYSTEM SEEMS TO REVERT TO NORMAL AFTER A COUPLE OF WEEKS, BUT WHEN THE DEALER USES THE PROPER TEST EQUIPMENT IT CAN BE DETERMINED THE UNIT HAS FAILED. IT SEEMS LIKELY THAT MANY VENTURES ARE BEING USED WITH FAILED PRETENSIONERS AND THEIR OWNERS ARE UNAWARE OF THE ISSUE SINCE ALL INDICATIONS FROM THE ALERT LIGHT IS THAT THE AIR BAG SYSTEM IS FUNCTIONING PROPERLY. THIS IS THE THIRD TIME THIS ISSUE HAS HAPPENED ON MY VEHICLE IN LESS THAN FIVE YEARS AND CHEVROLET CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE IS REFUSING TO ADDRESS THE ISSUE.

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1998 CHEVROLET VENTURE. THE CONTACT SHIFTED THE GEAR INTO PARK AND SHUT OFF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE ROLLED AWAY WHILE SHE WAS ASSISTING A CHILD WITH EXITING THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT RAN TO JUMP INTO THE VEHICLE AND NOTICED THAT THE GEAR SHIFTER WAS VERY UNSTABLE AND HAD A LOT OF "PLAY" OR WIGGLE. SHE DEPRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL AND THE VEHICLE CAME TO A STOP. PRIOR TO THIS FAILURE, THE TAIL LIGHTS FAILED IN FEBRUARY OF 2007. AT THAT TIME, SHE WAS INFORMED THAT SHE NEEDED NEW CIRCUIT BOARDS. WITHIN A YEAR, THE FAILURES RECURRED. THE CIRCUIT BOARDS BURNED OUT AND THE DEALER STATED THAT THE PLUG FOR THE BOARDS WAS BURNED OUT AS WELL, WHICH WOULD CAUSE THE FAILURES TO CONTINUE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 130,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 168,000.

I OWN A 1998 CHEVY VENTURE VAN. I RECENTLY TOOK IT IN FOR A RECALL FOR A DEFECT ON THE STEERING RACK AND PINION (NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER : 02V286000). THE DEALER WOULD NOT REPLACE THE DEFECTIVE COMPONENT BECAUSE THE VAN HAS A SALVAGE TITLE. I WAS NOTIFIED THAT "THE BEARING IS ABOUT TO FALL OUT" AND THE ENTIRE RACK AND PINION WAS DAMAGED DUE TO THE DEFECT AND HAS TO BE REPLACED AT A COST OF $600. I CALLED GM AND WAS INFORMED THAT IT WAS THEIR POLICY NOT TO DO RECALLS ON VEHICLES WITH A SALVAGED TITLE. THIS IS A DEFECT AND A SAFETY ISSUE REGARDLESS OF THE SALVAGED TITLE AND I THINK GM SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR FIXING IT. THERE IS ALSO ANOTHER SAFETY RECALL ON THE TRANSMISSION (NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER : 98V131000) THAT IS A PROBLEM ON MY PARTICULAR VAN. ABOUT A YEAR AGO, A 5 YEAR OLD FRIEND OF THE FAMILY WAS PLAYING IN THE VAN (WITHOUT OUR KNOWLEDGE). HE WAS ABLE TO MOVE THE SHIFT LEVER ENOUGH TO DISENGAGE THE TRANSMISSION LOCK EVEN THOUGH IT WAS STILL IN PARK, AND THE VAN ROLLED DOWN THE HILL IN OUR BACK YARD. IT WAS STOPPED BY A SMALL TREE. NOBODY WAS HURT EVEN THOUGH THERE WERE TWO OTHER CHILDREN IN THE BACK YARD PLAYING AND THE VAN SUFFERED ONLY MINOR DAMAGE. VEHICLE HAS BEEN SERVICED AT LEAST NINE TIMES FOR THIS PROBLEM, CHEVROLET ACKNOWLEDGES THE PROBLEM, AND SAYS THEY DO NOT HAVE A SOLUTION. IN ADDITION, THE FRONT DRIVER'S SEAT HAS BEEN REPLACED. ALSO, THE WINDOW FELL OUT FROM THE SLIDING DOOR BECAUSE THE LATCH WAS INSTALLED UP SIDE DOWN/THE HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY WAS REPLACED DUE TO LOUD WHISTLING WHENEVER DRIVING MORE THAN 50MPH.
