TL* -THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE PASSENGER SHOULDER RESTRAINT AND THE DRIVER'S SEAT BELT WERE NOT WORKING IN HER 1993 FORD ESCORT AND SHE DISCOVERED THAT IT IS NOT UNCOMMON FOR HER VEHICLE. SHE CONTACTED FORD MOTOR COMPANY AND THEY TOLD HER THAT THE DEALER CAN SERVICE HER VEHICLE, BUT IT WOULD NOT BE COVERED UNDER THE WARRANTY. THE WARRANTY IS DOES NOT COVER VEHICLES OVER 5 YEARS OR 50,000 MILEAGE. THIS WAS TOLD TO HER BY 1 SUPERVISOR AND 2 REPRESENTATIVES. THE FUEL PUMP SHORTED WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE. SMOKE CAME OUT OF THE DASBOARD WHEN DRIVING, AND THE VEHICLE STALLED AND WOULD NOT START. LATER INVESTIGATION BY THE MECHANIC SHOWED THE FUEL PUMP CAUSED AN ELECTRICAL SHORT, CAUSING THE WIRING TO OVERHEAT BECAUSE FORD DID NOT PUT A FUSE IN THE POWER LINES TO THE FUEL PUMP. THE FUEL CONNECTIONS INSIDE THE GAS TANK WERE MELTED AND COULD HAVE CAUSED AN EXPLOSION. THE ENTIRE WIRING HARNES TO THE FUEL PUMP MELTED BECAUSE OF THE ELECTRICAL SHORT AND NEEDS TO BE COMPLETLY REPLACED. I'M APPAULED THAT THERE IS NO FUSE OR CIRCUIT BREAKER TO PREVENT SUCH A DANGEROUS HAZARD. NONE OF THE FUSES IN THE FUSE BLOCK WERE BLOWN. TRACING THE WIRING FROM THE FUEL PUPM SHOWS THAT IT COMPLETELY BYPASSES THE FUSE BLOCK. THE FUEL CUT-OFF SWITCH NEVER TRIPPED, NOR DOES IT SEEM TO BE DESIGNED TO ADDRESS ELECTRICAL SHORTS TO THE PUMP. THIS DESIGN POSES SERIOUS THREATS TO LIFE, AS AN ELECTRICAL SHORT CAN CAUSE AN EXPLOSION IN THE FUEL TANK. MY FAMILY FEELS LUCKY TO BE ALIVE. I HAVE REPLACED THE FUEL PUMP, AND NOW AM TRYING TO REPLACE THE WIRING HARNESS. THIS WAS THE ORIGINAL FUEL PUMP AS THE RUST AROUND THE PUMP SEALS INDICATES. I'M HOLDING ON TO THE PUMP TO SHOW THE MELTED CONNECTIONS WHICH INDICATE A POTENTIAL EXPLOSION HAZARD AS WELL AS THE MELTED WIRING CONNECTIONS/CONNECTOR AND WIRES TO THE PUMP.*AK

THE BATTERY CABLE BROKE OFF AND THE CONSUMER WAS UNABLE TO START THE VEHICLE UNLESS SHE TAPED THE CABLE IN PLACE. I WAS DRIVING WHEN MY CAR SUDDENLY ACCELERATED. I WAS ABLE TO REGAIN CONTROL WITHOUT AN ACCIDENT. THIS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES ON MY WAY HOME. THE NEXT DAY WHEN I ATTEMPTED TO TAKE THE CAR FOR INSPECTION IT WAS DEAD. THE REPAIR SHOP ADVISED ME THAT THE PROBLEM WAS THAT THE HEATER CORE WAS LEAKING AND SINCE THE HEATER CORE WAS LOCATED OVER THE ECU IT CAUSED IT TO MALFUNCTION.

FORD REFUSES TO PROVIDE A FREE FIX AND OR RECALL TO REMEDY THIS SITUATION FOR OUT OF WARRANTY CARS. I COULD ALSO MAKE A CASE THAT THIS COULD BE A SAFETY HAZARD IN THAT A PERSON EXPERIENCING THIS FAILURE WOULD LIKELY THINK THAT THEY WERE HAVING AN ENGINE FAILURE CAUSING THEM TO DIVE OF THE ROAD IMMEDIATELY. IMAGINE BEING IN TRAFFIC ON THE HIGHWAY AND ALL FO A SUDDEN SEEING YOUR TEMP GAUGE MAX TO THE HIGH SIDE AND STAY THERE! AS BRIEFLY AND SUCCINTLY AS I CAN; MY FATHER WAS DRIVING A 1993 FORD ESCORT STATION WAGON ON ONE OF THE LAST DAYS OF WINTER WHEN HE APPARENTLY HIT A PATCH OF BLACK ICE. HE DID GO LEFT OF CENTER AND WAS HIT BY AN ONCOMING VEHICLE (EACH VEHICLE @ 35MPH). MY QUESTION INVOLVES THE SIDE IMPACT CAPABILITY OF THIS MODEL - THE IMPACT WAS AS CLOSE TO BEING RIGHT ON THE "B'" PILLAR AS POSSIBLE AND THIS THING JUST FOLDED IN HALF. THE ROOF FOLDED, THE FLOOR BUCKLED AND THE PASSENGER SIDE WAS TOUCHING THE STEERING WHEEL. AT THIS POINT, I NEED TO EMPHASIZE THIS CAR WAS NOT A BUCKET OF RUST - HE BOUGHT IT USED BECAUSE OF THE LOW MILES AND GREAT CONDITION (MY FATHER, THE ETERNAL BARGAIN HUNTER). ALTHOUGH I'VE LOST MY FATHER TO THIS ACCIDENT, I AM CURIOUS IF THIS WAS AN ANOMOLY OR ARE THESE STATION WAGONS NOTED FOR THIS COLLAPSING FEATURE? IF THIS HASN'T BEEN NOTED BEFORE, I WILL PRESUME THIS WAS A "ONE OF" EVENT, BUT IF THERE ARE OTHERS THAT HAVE EXHIBITED THE SAME FAILURE MODE, I WOULD SAY THERE IS A PROBLEM. HE ADVERTISED THE CAR AS HAVING ANTI-LOCK BRAKES AND DRIVERS SIDE AIRBAG, BOTH SAFETY FEAURES WHICH I NEEDED FOR MY GIRLFRIEND AND FUTURE CHILD. UPON TAKING IT FOR A REQUIRED PA INSPECTION 2 WEEKS LATER, AND SPENDING $700 FOR IT JUST TO PASS, I FOUND OUT IT DIDN'T HAVE ANTI-LOCK BRAKES OR DRIVERS SIDE AIRBAG. IN 1992 I BOUGHT A BRAND NEW 1993 ESCORT GT SPARTANBURG, SC. THE 1ST PART OF THE YEAR EVERYTHING WAS FINE. AFTER, THE CAR WAS IN AND OUT OF THE SHOP TO DATE FOR HESITATION, FUEL SYSTEM PROBLEMS, ODD NOISES AND OTHER THINGS. I FILED FOR LEMON LAW IN 1993-94 IN TEXAS. WAS TOLD THEY WOULD REPLACE THE MOTOR, COULD TAKE UP TO A MONTH BEFORE I GOT THE CAR BACK. WHEN ASKED IF THEY WOULD SUPPLY A LOANER CAR I WAS TOLD NO. WITHOUT FINANCES TO RENT A CAR TO GET TO & FROM WORK (50 MLS DAILY) I COULD NOT ACCEPT THE OFFER AT THAT TIME WITHOUT THEM PROVIDING TRANSPORTATION. OVER THE YEARS, IT'S BEEN 1 PROBLEM AFTER ANOTHER. SINCE 1994, I REPLACED 3 CATALYTIC CONVERTERS, NUMEROUS DIAGNOSTIC MACHINES TO FIND WHY IT WOULD STALL IN IDLE AND NO ACCELERATION AFTER CAR WARMED UP& OTHER THINGS. IN 1995, THE FUEL TANK DEVELOPED A CRACK AT SOLDER JOINT BETWEEN THE FUEL RETURN & THE FUEL PUMP SENDING UNIT LOCATED AT TOP OF TANK RESULTING IN FUMES & GAS LEAKING WHEN FILLED. THREE FORD DEALERSHIPS SAID ONLY 1992 FORD ESCORTS WERE INCLUDED IN THE RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM AND THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO EVEN THOUGH IT WAS MANUFACTURED IN 1992. THE AUTOMATIC SEAT BELT, DRIVER SIDE QUIT WORKING. WE REPLACED IT WITH A NEW ONE BUT STILL WON'T WORK. SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE WIRING. TWO FORD DEALERSHIPS CAN'T FIX NOR TWO AUTO ELECTRICIANS. DRIVER HAD LOST CONTROL OF VEHICLE, POSSIBLY FELL ASLEEP AND RAN OFF THE ROAD , CAR WENT OVER ENBANKMENT AND HIT HEAD-ON AGAINST ROCKS. DRIVER WAS THROWN FROM VEHICLE THROUGH WINDSHIELD ABOUT 30-35 FEET DUE FAILURE OF AUTOMATIC SEATBELT. AUTOMATIC SEAT BELT WAS IN FORWARD POSTION ON THE AUTOMATIC RAIL, AND BOTH DOORS WERE COMPLETELY CLOSED. ALSO BATTERY WAS THROWN FROM THE VEHICLE . DEFECT RESULTED IN DEATH OF DRIVER.*AK

PROBLEM SURFACED FOLLOWING A REPAIR ON WHEEL ALIGNMENT (REAR WAS NOT ALIGNED ON LAST SERVICE) AFTER THIS, PROBLEM SURFACED. HAD INDEPENDENT REPAIR STATION CHECK AND WAS TOLD TO CHECK FOR FORD'S RECALL NOTICE AS "CORRECTION IS VERY EXPENSIVE" WITH PLASTIC FUEL TANK.

THE FUSE FOR "ROOM" BURNT UP REPEATEDLY (AND WHEN IT DID, THE RADIO STOPPED WORKING.) MY SON FOUND THAT SMOKE CAME OUT OF THE IGNITION LOCK BAR WHEN I PUT IN A NEW FUSE FOR "ROOM" TWO DAYS AGO. MY GUESS IS THAT THE IGNITION LOCK BAR HAS A DESIGN DEFECT; THAT SMOKE HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE REASON WHY THE "ROOM" FUSE HAD NEVER LASTED VERY LONG. THIS REMIND ME OF ANOTHER PROBLEM THAT CAME UP TWO YEARS AGO, WHEN WHITE SMOKE CAME OUT FROM UNDER THE STEERING WHEEL AFTER THE CAR STAY UNDER THE SUN FOR HOURS. (I FOUND THAT THIS PROBLEM WAS REPEATABLE--WHEN IT GOT ENOUGH SUNSHINE I ALWAYS GOT THE WHITE SMOKE.) I CALLED FORD AND THEY TOLD ME THAT MY CAR WAS NOT PART OF THEIR CALL-BACK. THIS PROBLEM MIGHT ALSO BE IN THAT IGNITION LOCK BAR.

ACCELERATION NOTICED WHILE DRIVING OVER 45MPH, AND WHEN SLOWING DOWN AFTER DRIVING OVER 45 MPH, SOMETIMES AS LITTLE AS 1 MINUTE. AT TIMES, THE CRUISE CONTROL ACCELERATED TO OVER 40 MP ON ITS OWN AFTER A COMPLETE STOP. ENGINE TEMPERATURE HAS RARELY BEEN IN THE NORMAL RANGE DURING THIS OCCURRENCE. THIS PROBLEM IS WEARING OUT THE BRAKE SYSTEM.

VEHICLE WAS PARKED WITH THE EMERGENCY PARKING BRAKE ENGAGED. THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION WAS IN THE PARK POSITION AND WHEELS WERE LOCKED. UPON DAUGHTER ENTERING THE VEHICLE AND KNEELING ON THE DRIVERS SEAT TO RETRIEVE SOMETHING, NOTICED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION. DUE TO THE STEEP INCLINE OF THE DRIVEWAY SHE COULD NOT EXIT THE VEHICLE, IT WAS MOVING TO QUICKLY. THE VEHICLE STRUCK A LEDGE, CHANGED DIRECTION OF MOVEMENT AND THEN STRUCK A UTILITY POLE.
