THE TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSED THAT THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD AND BOLTS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 143,000.

I JUST PURCHASED THIS EXPEDITION AND THE NUMBER 2 SPARK PLUG EJECTED FROM THE ENGINE DESTROYING THE COIL PACK AND STRIPPING THE THREADS. I HAVE READ ALOT ABOUT THIS AND FEEL THAT FORD SHOULD DO SOMETHING ON THIS ISSUE. SO MANY PEOPLE HAVE SPENT SO MUCH MONEY ON A DESIGN FAILURE THAT FORD DOES NOT WANT TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1999 FORD EXPEDITION. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THERE WAS AN ABNORMAL VIBRATION FROM THE MOTOR WHICH WAS STRIPPING THE SPARK PLUGS. THE DEALER ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THE VEHICLE WAS OPERATING AS DESIGNED AND ALSO ADVISED THAT SHE PURCHASE A SPARK PLUG KIT. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE HOWEVER, DID NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE. NO REPAIRS WERE PERFORMED. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 135,000 AND THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 134,500.

MY FORD EXPEDITION WAS OUTFITTED A LITTLE OVER 3 YEARS AGO WITH GOODYEAR WRANGLERS BY FORD DUE TO THE FIRESTONE TIRE FAILURE. RECENTLY, WHILE WASHING THE VEHICLE I NOTICED FAILURE IN THE SIDEWALL OF THE DRIVER'S SIDE REAR TIRE. ALL AROUND THE RIM APPROXIMATELY 1/2 TO 3/4" FROM THE RIM THERE ARE CRACKS IN THE RUBBER SIDEWALL OPENING UP AS THE EARTH DOES DURING AN EARTHQUAKE. THESE ARE APPROXIMATELY 2-3" LONG AND A LITTLE OVER 1/8" DEEP SO FAR. THIS IS HIGHLY UNUSUAL FOR THREE YEAR OLD TIRES. LAST WEEK I HAD SHUT MY FORD EXPO OFF I WENT TO RESTART IT ABOUT A HALF HOUR LATER AND WOULD NOT START BACK UP. THE TRUCK FINILY STARTED ABOUT A HOUR LATER.

I HAVE THIS VERY SAME PROBLEM. WHILE VEHICLE IS OFF THE HEATER BLOWERS WILL TURN ON AND RUN BATTERY DOWN. WHILE DRIVING 4X4, WASHER LIGHTS, POWER WINDOWS, RADIO, INTERIOR LIGHTS ALL TURN OFF AND ON. RADIO WORKS WHILE IN PARK BUT, POWERS DOWN WHEN VEHICLE IS PUT IN GEAR. HAVE HAD ISSUES WITH WATER GETTING IN AND RUNNING DOWN DRIVERS SIDE. APPEARS ALOT OF PEOPLE ARE HAVING THE SAME ISSUE. HERE IS MY PROBLEM: ABOUT A MONTH AGO, MY 99 EXPEDITION BEGAN TO MAKE A "CLUNKING" NOISE WHILE MAKING SHARP TURNS (LIKE INTO PARKING SPACES). IT IS NOT JUST A NOISE - YOU CAN FEEL IT THROUGH THE STEERING WHEEL AND IT MAKES THE WHOLE TRUCK JERK AROUND. IT IS ALMOST LIKE MY FRONT WHEELS ARE DRIVING OVER GOLF BALL-SIZED ROCKS. THE PROBLEM STARTED VERY SUDDENLY, AND IT IS SOMEWHAT INTERMITTENT - BUT IT IS BECOMING MORE FREQUENT AS TIME GOES ON. I HAD IT IN TO THE FORD GARAGE TWICE NOW, AND IT JUST DOES NOT WANT TO ACT UP WHEN A TECHNICIAN IN THE VEHICLE. SINCE I CAN'T ALWAYS MAKE IT HAPPEN, I AM INCLINED TO BELIEVE THAT IT IS NOT A MECHANICAL PROBLEM (LIKE A U-JOINT OR CV JOINT). IT IS EITHER REALLY BAD OR NON-EXISTENT. ALSO, I DO NOT NOTICE ANY MAJOR SYMPTOMS WHILE DRIVING IN A STRAIGHT LINE, ALTHOUGH I SOMETIMES DO HEAR A HIGH-PITCHED WHINE FROM THE FRONT END WHILE TRAVELING ABOVE 40 MPH. THIS NOISE IS ALSO INTERMITTENT, AND IT SOUNDS SOMEWHAT LIKE A WHEEL BEARING GOING OUT (THEY CHECKED OUT OK). WHEN I FIRST EXPERIENCED THE JUMPY FRONT END WHILE TAKING CORNERS, I IMMEDIATELY THOUGHT THAT THE TRUCK HAD BEEN SWITCHED INTO 4WD. THE JERKY, CLUNKY BEHAVIOR OF THE FRONT END IS NEARLY IDENTICAL TO HOW THE TRUCK ACTS WHEN YOU RUN IN 4WD ON DRY PAVEMENT. I HAVE PUT THE TRUCK INTO 4WD TO TEST THIS THEORY, AND THE PROBLEM IS SIMILAR, BUT MUCH WORSE WHEN I FORCE THE TRANSFER CASE INTO 4WD. ONE OF THE MOST NOTICEABLE DIFFERENCES IS HOW THE TRUCK ACTS WHEN I FIRST START TO MOVE. IN 4WD, THE TRUCK IS MUCH MORE HESITANT TO START MOVING - IT WILL NOT EVEN CREEP FORWARD IN IDLE. I PURCHASED A 1999 FORD WINDSTAR SEL 3 YEARS AGO AND HAVE HAD HELL WITH IT EVER SINCE. THE VEHICLE HAD ONLY BEEN OWNED BY ONE OTHER PERSON AND HE HAD TO PUT A NEW TRANSMISSION IN IT RIGHT OVER 50,000 MILES. @ 130,000 MILES I TOO HAD TO PUT ANOTHER TRANSMISSION IN IT. NOW THE VAN HAS 160000 AND I AM AGAIN HAVING TROUBLE WITH THE TRANSMISSION. THIS IS RIDICULOUS. UPPER AND LOWER SUPPORT ARMS REPLACED, TRACK BAR REPLACED, REAR AIR RIDE SUSPENSION BAG REPLACED, BRACKETS AND HARDWARE FOUND BROKEN REPAIRED, FRONT END ALIGNMENT. SUSPENSION PARTS NOTED AS RUSTED. FUEL TANK STRAPS NOTED AS RUSTED, DRIVE SHAFT OK FOR NOW.

MY HUSBAND AND I RETURNED FROM OUR DAUGHTERS HOUSE AROUND 6PM, ALMOST 8PM WE HEARD 2 LOUD BOOMS AND THEN WE LOOKED OUT THE WINDOW AND THE VEHICLE WAS IN FLAMES JUST IN THE FRONT AND SHORTLY AFTER THE TIRES POPPED. THE SUV WAS THEN BLAZING HIGH AT THIS TIME,THEN THE FIRE DEPARTMENT SHOWED UP. AFTER SITTING DOWN AND THINKING A MINUTE WE REMEMBERED THE RECALL CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH ISSUE WITH FORD WHICH A LOT OF PEOPLE REPORTED FIRES HAPPENING. SO NOW WE WONDERING IF THIS HAS ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE RECALL. WE WOULD LIKE SOMEONE TO INVESTIGATE THIS, WE ARE VERY OLD AND THIS WAS OUR ONLY MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION. I HAVE A 1999 EXPEDITION WITH 90,000 MILES. IN EARLY DECEMBER OF 2006, IN HEAVY EVENING TRAFFIC, A CAR SUDDENLY PULLED IN FRONT OF ME AND CAME TO A QUICK STOP. I APPLIED THE BRAKES VERY HARD AND THE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. I MANAGED TO AVOID HITTING THE CAR THAT STOPPED IN FRONT OF ME, BUT MY BRAKES WERE GONE AND I HAD TO LIMP TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. UPON INSPECTION, I FOUND THAT MY BRAKE LINE TO THE LEFT REAR BRAKE HAD CORRODED AND FAILED. I GOT THE VEHICLE HOME AND ON A NEIGHBORS LIFT AND FOUND THAT ALL MY BRAKE LINES HAD CORRODED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. I HAD A SIMILAR PROBLEM WITH THE BRAKE LINES ON MY 1993 ECONOLINE THAT ALSO CORRODED AT ABOUT 90000 MILES. IT APPEARS TO ME THAT THE BRAKE LINES IN THESE VEHICLES WERE MADE FROM CHEAP METAL AND THAT THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD LOOK INTO THIS PROBLEM AS IT APPEARS TO BE QUITE A COMMON OCCURRENCE. I REPLACED ALL BRAKE LINES, INCLUDING THE LINES FROM THE MASTER CYLINDER AND TO THE POWER ASSIST UNIT. THE OLD PARTS WERE THROWN AWAY. *NM

I SAID TO MYSELF THEN, WHEN I HAVE THIS INSPECTION PERFORMED, THE CAR WILL HAVE DEFECTIVE PARTS THAT WILL HAVE TO BE REPLACED. I WAS RIGHT. $594.45 FOR BALL JOINT REPLACEMENTS AT 47,271 MILES! BALL JOINTS SHOULD LAST 100,000 MILES OR MORE. I BELIEVE FORD SHOULD REPLACE FOR FREE SINCE THEY INSTALLED DEFECTIVE PARTS ON NEW VEHICLES. DEFECTIVE STEERING LINKAGE IS A CRITICAL SAFETY ISSUE. 1999 EXPEDITION XLT 4WD W/17" STEEL WHEELS. WHILE TRAVELING ON A WELL GRADED GRAVEL ROAD, ABOUT 35MPH THE RIDE SUDDENLY BECAME SHUDDERING, LIKE A TIRE WAS GOING FLAT. AS I WAS SLOWING TO STOP & CHECK IT, BUT WHILE STILL TRAVELLING ABOUT 20-25 MPH, THERE WAS A SUDDEN THUMPING THUD, AND THE RIGHT REAR CORNER OF THE VEHICLE DROPPED, AS IF THE TIRE HAD FAILED, ACCOMPANIED BY IMMEDIATE LOSS OF SPEED. UPON STOPPING & EXITING TO CHANGE THE TIRE, I FOUND THAT THE RIGHT REAR TIRE & WHEEL WERE COMPLETELY MISSING, AND THE VEHICLE WAS RESTING ON THE BRAKE ROTOR. UPON CLOSER INSPECTION, THERE WERE NO LUG BOLTS UPON WHICH TO MOUNT THE SPARE. I FOUND THE TIRE & WHEEL OFF THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, FULLY INFLATED; AND ALSO FOUND THE HUBCAP & ALL OF THE LUG NUTS STREWN ALONG THE ROADWAY. THE NUTS HAD THE SHEARED OFF/BROKEN STUBS OF THE LUG STUDS STILL ATTACHED TO THEM. NO INJURIES RESULTED, NOR WAS THERE ANY OTHER PROPERTY DAMAGE; NO OTHER VEHICLES OR PERSONS WERE AFFECTED BY THE INCIDENT. WHEN THE WHEEL CAME OFF OF THE HUB, IT DID EXTENSIVE BODY DAMAGE TO THE WHEEL WELL AREA AND TO THE QUARTER PANEL/FENDER AREA. VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A REPAIR SHOP, AND MY INSURANCE COMPANY NOTIFIED FOR A POSSIBLE DAMAGE CLAIM. I WORK AT A TIRE STORE AND HAVE SEEN ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS, LUG STUDS SNAPPING WITH TORQUE WRENCH USE OF 100 PSI. ON FORD AND LINCOLN TRUCKS AND SUV'S. IT IS ONLY HAPPENING TO THE ONES WITH 10 MM LUG STUDS. THE METAL ON THE INSIDE OF THE STUD HAS VARYING SHADES OF GREY IN IT. IT LOOKS LIKE THE METAL IS NOT THE SAME ALL THE WAY THROUGH. ONCE THE STUD SNAPS, THE NUT CAN BE SCREWED OFF BY HAND AND IS NOT CROSS THREADED. WHEN TRYING TO TORQUE THEM, THE NUT KEEPS TURNING UNTIL THE STUD SNAPS. WE HAVE DONE THIS USING DIFFERENT IMPACT GUNS AND TORQUE WRENCHES ON A MINIMUM OF 15 VEHICLES WITH ANY WHERE FROM 1 TO 8 STUDS SNAPPING. THE CUSTOMERS THINK WE ARE BREAKING THEM FROM INCOMPETENCE. I HAVE A 1999 FORD EXPEDITION. THE CABLE HOLDING THE SPARE TIRE UNDER THE CAR BROKE AS I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD. THE TIRE FELL ONTO THE ROAD AS WELL AS THE PIECE OF METAL THAT HOLDS THE TIRE IN PLACE. LUCKILY I WAS DRIVING ABOUT 25 MPH. NO OTHER DAMAGE OCCURRED TO MY CAR OR ANY OTHERS. IT WAS THE ORIGINAL SPARE TIRE, I LOWER AND RAISE IT ONCE IN A WHILE TO CHECK THE TIRE PRESSURE. *JB

1999 EXPEDITION SPARE TIRE CABLE FAILED. BROKE WHILE PULLING OUT OF A PARKING LOT CAUSING THE SPARE TIRE TO FALL TO THE GROUND. COULD HAVE CAUSED A FATALITY IN ANOTHER VEHICLE IF IT OCCURED AT HIGH SPEED. A TIRE SHOP WAS THE LAST TO REPLACE THE SPARE. THEY SAY THEY ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE. I HAVE ALWAYS TIGHTENED IT FULLY IN THE PAST. I ASSUME THAT IT MAY HAVE BEEN A BIT LOOSE AND WORE THROUGH THE CABLE OVER TIME AS IT RUBBED ON THE WHEEL.

MY SON EXITED THE PUBLIX GROCERY STORE WHERE HE WAS WORKING AND FOUND THAT OUR 1999 FORD EXPEDITION WAS ON FIRE WITH NO ONE IN THE VEHICLE WITH THE KEYS IN HIS POCKET. THE CHILD WAS PROPERLY SECURED IN THE INFANT ONLY CHILD RESTRAINT SEAT. THE CONTACT OBSERVED THAT THE TOP PORTION OF THE HARNESS RETAINER CLIP, USED TO SECURE THE HARNESS STRAPS, FAILED WITHOUT WARNING. THERE WERE NO INJURIES. THE CHILD RESTRAINT SEAT WAS INSTALLED USING THE LATCH SYSTEM. THE RESTRAINT SEAT WAS REPLACED DUE TO THE SAFETY ISSUES. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE MALFUNCTION. I HADCAR SEAT PROBLEM WITH THE ON MY WAY CAR SEAT BY EVENFLO. I REPORTED IT BY PHONE AND ALSO WROTE A LETTER TO THE PRESIDENT OF EVENFLO. MY CAR SEAT IS 3 1/2 YEARS OLD. MY 7 MONTH OLD SON GRABBED THE FIBERFILL FROM THE UNDER PART OF THE PADDING. WE WERE ON OUR WAY HOME FROM A LONG TRIP AND THANKFULLY REALIZED HE WAS PUDDLED IN VOMIT AND CHOKING SILENTLY. I LOOKED BACK TO SEE WHAT IT WAS THAT I WAS HEARING AND REALIZED HE WAS CHOKING. EVENFLO APOLOGIZED AND MENTIONED THAT THE NEW CAR SEAT COVER HAD A SPECIAL DESIGN SO THAT IT COULDN'T HAPPEN AGAIN. I MENTIONED THAT THEY SHOULD PUT OUT A WARNING OR RECALL BECAUSE IT COULD HAPPEN TO ANOTHER PARENT AND THEY MIGHT NOT BE SO FORTUNATE. CHILDREN OF THIS YOUNG AGE ARE VERY ORAL. IT CAN HAPPEN AGAIN. IN FACT I HAD WARNED ONE OF MY FRIENDS OF THE PROBLEM BECAUSE SHE HAD THE SAME COVER AND IT WAS NOT ON SECURELY(LIKE MINE) ANYMORE. THEY SAID THERE ARE SO MANY OF THE OLD CAR SEATS OUT THERE AND THAT THEY WOULD SEE IF ANYONE ELSE COMPLAINED AS I DID. I COMMENTED THAT I THOUGHT IT WAS CRAZY TO WAIT FOR ANOTHER INCIDENT TO HAPPEN. AT 3000 MILES THE ENGINE WAS REPLACED DUE TO A KNOCK IN THE ENGINE. AT 11,000 MILES THERE WAS A SEVERE VIBRATION IN THE DRIVE TRAIN AT 65 MPH WITH THE VECHILE UNDER LOAD - FORD COULDN'T IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM AND HAD NO FIX. AT 12,500 MILES THE TORQUE CONVERTER FAILED RESULTING IN THE VECHILE STALLING AT STOPS. THE TORQUE CONVERTER AND TRANSMISSION WERE REPLACED. THIS REDUCED THE VIBRATION BUT DID NOT ELIMINATE IT. AGAIN FORD TRIED SEVERAL TIMES BUT COULD NOT IDENTIFY AND CORRECT THE PROBLEM. AT 21,000 MILES THE VECHILE LOST ALL POWER AND WOULD ONLY MOVE BY REVING THE ENGINE (LIKE SEVERE CLUTCH SLIPPAGE ON A MANUAL TRANSMISSION). FORD IS PRESENTLY INVESTIGATING. BOTH FAILURES COULD HAVE RESULTED IN SEVERE ACCIDENTS IF THE DRIVING CONDITIONS HAD BEEN SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT AT THE TIME OF THE FAILURES. THE PROBLEM APPEARS TO ME TO BE IN THE COMPUTER CONSTROL SYSTEM FOR THE TRANSMISSION RESULTING IN POSSIBLY THE SECOND FAILRE OF THE TRANSMISSION.

1999 FORD EXPEDITION EXPERIENCING PROBLEMS WITH THE HEAD GASKETS. *MR THE CONSUMER FELT THAT THE ENGINE SHOULD BE REPLACED AT NO COST. THE PASSENGER SIDE HEAD GASKET LEAKED OIL BADLY. FORD REPLACED THE HEAD GASKET ONCE WHILE UNDER THE MANUFACTURER 36K MILE WARRANTY. THE HEAD GASKET WAS REPLACED AGAIN AT THE CONSUMERS EXPENSE BECAUSE THE LEAK RESUMED. THE CONSUMER WAS INFORMED BY THREE DIFFERENT FORD TECHNICIANS THAT THE OIL PASSAGE IN THE BLOCK OF THE ENGINE WAS SO CLOSE TO THE EDGE OF THE BLOCK THAT A HEAD GASKET WOULD HAVE A PROBLEM PREVENTING OIL FROM LEAKING OUT AND FORD DEVELOPED 2 OR 3 REVISED HEAD GASKETS TO ADDRESS THE PROBLEM SINCE 1999. AFTER TH SECOND REPAIR OFTHE HEAD GASKET, ONE OF THE HEADS LEAKED ANTI-FREEZE. THE FLARED PORTION OF THE TERMINATOR FOB ON THE RETAINING/RETRACTING CABLE FOR THE SPARE TIRE FRACTURED AND SEPARATED ON MY 1999 FORD EXPEDITION EDDIE BAUER (I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER). *TR AS A RESULT, THE SPARE TIRE AND THE METAL CROSSPIECE RETAINER DROPPED ONTO THE STREET PAVEMENT, AND IN FRONT OF ONCOMING VEHICLES, WHICH SWERVED AND AVOIDED COLLIDING WITH THE LOOSE SPARE TIRE. I AM JUST GLAD, AND FORTUNATE, THAT THE SPARE TIRE DID NOT BOUNCE INTO THE AIR, OR END UP CRASHING THROUGH THE WINDSHIELD OF AN ONCOMING VEHICLE. THERE ARE NUMEROUS REPORTS OF SIMILAR, IF NOT IDENTICAL INCIDENTS OF THIS SPARE TIRE CABLE BREAKAGE POSTED ON THE INTERNET. ACCORDING TO THE OWNERS MANUAL, THE CRANK MECHANISM IS DRIVEN USING THE JACK HANDLE, AND IT IS SUPPOSED TO "RATCHET" WHEN THE SPARE TIRE BECOMES SNUG AGAINST THE VEHICLE UNDERCARRIAGE, PREVENTING OVER TENSION ON THE CRANK MECHANISM AND CABLE. UPON INSPECTION, THERE WERE NO SIGNS OF RUST, OR CORROSION, OR ATTEMPTED THEFT OR TAMPERING. A SMALL COLLAR PORTION OF THE TERMINATOR FOB REMAINED ON THE CABLE, WHILE FLARED PORTION BROKE AND SLIPPED OFF OF THE END OF THE CABLE. THERE ARE NOT ANY ADDITIONAL SAFETY DEVICES ON THE VEHICLE THAT RETAIN THE SPARE TIRE IN THE EVENT THE CABLE FAILS. DURING THE 2001 FIRESTONE TIRE RECALL, THE DEALER REPLACED ALL FIVE TIRES, WHICH INCLUDED THE SPARE TIRE. OTHERWISE, THE CRANK MECHANISM HAS NOT BEEN USED. I SEARCHED BUT FAILED TO FIND A REPORTED GOVERNMENT RECALL OF THIS CABLE AT HTTP://WWW.RECALLS.GOV/SEARCH.HTML. TIRES HAVE HAD A PROBLEM WITH MAINTAINING BALANCE AND HAVE REQUIRED BEING RE-BALANCED AND ROTATED EVERY 500 TO 1500 MILES. I HAD THE TIRES INSPECTED BY NATIONAL TIRE AND BATTERY, THEY DISMOUNTED THE TIRES, CHECKED FOR ROUNDNESS, INDEXED THE TIRES AND REMOUNTED THEM, ADDED ADDITIONAL WEIGHTS TO FRONT AND REAR OF TIRES. THEY SAID THE TIRES WERE DEFECTIVE AND SHOULD BE REPLACED BY THE MANUFACTURER. I TOOK THE SUV AND THE INSPECTION REPORT TO SEVERAL FIRESTONE DEALERS, ONE BARELY LOOKED AT THE TIRES AND QUOTED ME A PRICE OF $128.00 PER TIRE TO REPLACE THEM WITH THE SAME SIZE AND BRAND, NO CONSIDERATION WAS GIVEN TO THEM BEING DEFECTIVE OR COVERD BY PRO-RATA WARRANTY. ANOTHER DEALER SAID THAT HE DIDN'T NEED TO INSPECT THE TIRES THEY WERE NOT COVERED BY THE MANUFACTURERS WARRANTY AFTER 12,000 MILES AND THAT THERE WAS NO SUCH THING AS AN "OUT OF ROUND" TIRE. I HAVE TRIED TO SEEK RELIEF FROM FIRESTONE, WHO FINALLY SENT AN EMAIL SUGGESTING THAT I HAVE THE TIRES INSPECTED BY THEIR DEALERS, EVEN AFTER I HAD INFORMED THEM OF THE LACK OF INTEREST DISPLAYED BY THEIR DEALERS IN ATLANTA. I REC'D THE SAME VERBAGE THAT THEY RELEASED TO THE PRESS CONCERNING THE RECALLED TIRES AND I ADVISED THEM THAT I WASN'T SEEKING INFORMATION ON THE RECALLED TIRES, SINCE, MY SIZE WASN'T INCLUDED, THAT I WAS SEEKING RELIEF FOR A DEFECTIVE PRODUCT. THESE TIRES ARE BECOMING UNSAFE AT ANY SPEED AND THEY SHOULD BE RECALLED WITH THE OTHER SIZES BY FORD AND/OR FIRESTONE. THEREFORE MY HUSBAND HAD TO DISCONNECT THE BATTERY AGAIN AND WE HAD TO PAY FOR A TRUCK HAULER TO TAKE IT TO THE FORD DEALER. WHEN THE DEALER MADE THE REPAIRS THE 5 AMP FUSE IN ONE OF THE CIRCUITS WAS REPLACED WITH A 15 AMP FUSE WITHOUT THE CONSUMERS KNOWLEDGE OR CONSENT. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND INDICATED THE DEALER SHOULD NOT HAVE REPLACED THE FUSE WITH A LARGE AMP WHEN COMPLETING THE RECALL WORK. RECENTLY I HAD A BREAK DOWN; I HAD THREE SPARK PLUGS BLOW-OUT, YESTERDAY I WAS TOLD THAT THREE CYLINDERS ARE GONE DUE FROM THE DAMAGE OF THE SPARK PLUGS. THE ASSISTANT TEAM MGR SAID IT WOULD COST $6000.00 TO GET A NEW ENGINE OR GET A NEW VEHICLE; I COULDN'T BELIEVE MY EARS. SUDDENLY I FELT A VIBRATION AND SOUND THAT RESEMBLED DRIVING OVER RUMBLE STRIPS! THERE ALSO WAS IMMEDIATE VIBRATION IN THE STEERING, THOUGH NO LOSS OF CONTROL. I WAS DRIVING IN THE SLOW LANE (#2), SO I GENTLY APPLIED BRAKES AND MOVED TO THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD AND STOPPED. MY PASSENGER SIDE FRONT TIRE HAD COMPLETELY COME APART. THE TREAD HAD SEPARATED FROM THE CASING, AND THE SIDEWALL WAS CHEWED UP, EXPOSING THE WHITE PLYS UNDERNEATH! WHEN THE TIRE WAS REMOVED AND INSPECTED AT THE GARAGE THAT TOWED ME, A TEAR, THAT WENT FROM THE RIM STRAIGHT OUT TO WHERE THE CASING MEETS THE TREAD WAS FOUND. THERE WERE NO FOREIGN OBJECTS OR BUBBLES IN THE TIRE, NOR HAD I RUN OVER ANYTHING, AND THERE WAS NO DAMAGE TO THE RIM. THE TIRE HAD ABOUT 90% TREAD ON IT .THIS VEHICLE HAD JUST RECEIVED A MAINTENANCE CHECK AND SERVICING AT A FORD DEALERSHIP IN PITTSBURGH, PENNA. ON 10AUG02. THIS WAS A "MULTI POINT INSP."(INCLUDING TIRE ROTATION) I WAS TOLD THAT "ALL TIRES, BRAKES, ETC. WERE IN VERY GOOD CONDITION, REQUIRING NO MAINTENENCE BEYOND FLUID AND FILTER CHANGES THAT WERE BEING DONE AT THAT TIME. BASICALLY, I DON'T KNOW WHAT CAUSED THE TIRE TO THROW THE TREAD, (SEPARATE). I DO KNOW THAT THE VEHICLE WAS CHECKED BY THE MANUFACTURER'S DEALERSHIP, AND BASED ON THE INFORMATION THAT I HAVE SUPPLIED, AND THE RECENT PROBLEMS WITH FIRESTONE, AND NOW CONTINENETAL TIRES, MY WIFE, WHO WAS WITH ME, AS WELL AS MYSELF ARE EXTREMELY CONCERNED ABOUT OUR SAFETY WHEN TRAVELING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, AS WE OFTEN MAKE OUT OF STATE TRIPS. TIRES: HAD A BLOWOUT ON THE HIGHWAY IN APRIL OF THIS YEAR. I WENT TO THE NEAREST FIRESTONE DEALER. HE INSPECTED THE TIRE AND REPORTED THAT IT WAS DEFECTIVE AND NOT REPAIRABLE, SO I BOUGHT A NEW ONE. EVER SINCE THIS HAPPENED, THE VEHICLE VIBRATED TERRIBLY AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. REPORTED (3TIMES) TO DEALERSHIP SINCE APRIL. EACH REPORT IS DOCUMENTED. ALLEGEDLY FIXED EACH TIME. FINALLY ON 8/04/00 THE TIRE WAS DECLARED DEFECTIVE BY THE DEALERSHIP AND WAS REPLACED.(I HAVE DOCUMENTATION/RECEIPTS ON ALL WORK). PROBLEM IS THAT THE TRUCK STILL VIBRATES AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS ALTHOUGH AT LOWER MPH THAN PREVIOUSLY REPORTED. AIR CONDITIONING: FIRST REPORTED STRONG MOLDY ODOR BACK IN JAN 1999. WAS TOLD BY FORD SERVICE REP. THAT IT WAS DUE TO THE TRUCK'S HAVING BEEN IDLE IN THE HOT SUN/PARKING LOT PRIOR TO MY PURCHASING IT. I WAS TOLD THAT IT WOULD DISSIPATE IN TIME. IT DID NOT. I BROUGHT IT IN THREE TIMES SINCE THEN. EACH TIME I ASKED THAT THE CAUSE BE FIXED AND NOT JUST THE SYMPTOMS. ON THE 4TH VISIT, I INVOLVED THE OWNER AND HIS DEALERSHIP HIRED AN OUTSIDE COMPANY TO REMOVE THE MOLD FROM THE SYSTEM. THEY CLAIMED TO HAVE DONE SO BUT DURING THE CLEANING PROCESS THEY ADDED A CHEMICAL/PERFUME THAT IS SO STRONG, ONE CANNOT TELL IF THE ACTUAL PROBLEM IS STILL PRESENT OR NOT. I WAS TOLD (BY THE SERVICE REP) THE OWNER WAS SO OFFENDED BY THIS SMELL THAT HE HAD THE COMPANY COME BACK OUT & REDO THE TRUCK TO REMOVE THE ADDED CHEMICAL. THEY WERE UNSUCCESSFUL AS IT SMELLS VERY STRONG EVEN TODAY (2 WEEKS LATER). MY CONCERN IS AS FOLLOWS; IF THEY REMOVED THE MOLD AND SMELL THEN WHY WOULD THEY NEED TO ADD A CHEMICAL/PERFUME? I BELIEVE THAT THEY ADDED THIS CHEMICAL TO MASK THE FACT THAT THE MOLD IS STILL PRESENT. I THINK THAT ALL THEY WERE ABLE TO DO WAS OVERPOWER THE STENCH OF MOLD BY ADDING THIS FRAGRANCE. I WANT THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM FIXED, NOT JUST THE SYMPTOMS. HAVING MOLD SPORES BLOWN INTO MY FACE IS A RISK TO MY HEALTH AND IS OF SERIOUS CONCERN TO ALL. MY TRUCK IS NOT THE ONLY ONE.

THIS VEHICLE HAS BEEN BACK TO DEALERSHIP SEVEN TIMES SINCE PURCHASE FOR WARRANTY SERVICE PROBLEMS AND RECALLS. IN MAY OF 99 THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE WHEEL LUGS: NUTS. IN SEPTEMBER 99, NOVEMBER 99, AND MARCH 2000 IT WAS IN FOR WINDSHIELD WIPER PROBLEMS; MOULDING REPLACEMENT; TWICE FOR FRONT END ALIGNMENTS (STEERS TO RIGHT); AND TRAILER HITCH RECALL. THE CONSTANT SMELLL OF BURNING OIL HAS JUST BEEN DIAGNOSED ON LATEST VISIT TO DEALERSHIP 5/15/00 AS NEEDING A NEW CYLINDER HEAD. VEHICLE HAS BEEN IN ON THREE OTHER OCCASIONS FOR THIS SAME PROBLEM, BUT THEY COULD NEVER FIND IT. NOW PARTS ARE ON ORDER---WILL TAKE 3-4 DAYS TO OBTAIN PARTS BEFORE THEY CAN REPAIR IT. REGARDING THE "WINDNOISE" DEALER SAYS ITS "NORMAL" YET SERVICE BULLETINS HAVE BEEN ISSUED ON THIS PROBLEM (996780 & TSB 99-6-5).
