POWER TRAIN

While driving, the vehicle experiences a sudden loss of power, after which the transmission goes into what feels like a false neutral. It then violently re-engages and accelerates uncontrollably without driver input. This is an extremely dangerous situation and presents a major safety risk to us and to others on the road. Fortunately, we were able to avoid a crash, but this could have easily resulted in a serious accident. The vehicle was initially brought to the dealership for an A/C issue, and at that time we asked that this transmission concern also be inspected. We were informed that the dealership could not replicate the problem. Since then, the issue has become more frequent and more severe. We have now been told that we can drop the vehicle off, but that it may take 3–4 weeks or longer before diagnostics even begin, and that we would be responsible for out-of-pocket rental car costs during this time. We were also told that because the issue could not previously be replicated, this would now be considered customer pay, despite the fact that this is a serious powertrain and safety-related issue. We find this unacceptable. This is not a convenience issue—it is a known concern with Ford’s 10-speed transmissions, and it places our safety at risk every time the vehicle is driven. We have opened a case with Ford in hopes that assistance will be provided, including: Proper diagnosis and repair of the transmission issue Coverage of related repair costs Assistance with a rental vehicle while the SUV is being evaluated, as it is currently unsafe to drive We trust Ford to stand behind its product and take this issue seriously before someone is injured.

2019 Ford Expedition Max with the 10R80 transmission experienced severe shifting issues shortly after PCM recall 24E13 was performed. The recall involves PCM/TCM updates and adaptive shift strategy reset. After the recall, the vehicle developed shuddering, harsh shifting, flaring between gears, and delayed engagement. Dealer diagnosis found internal transmission damage including CDF hub sleeve axial movement and No. 3 sun gear shell seal failure, along with diagnostic code P07E6. These failures are known on the 10R80, but the issue escalated immediately after the recall update. Transmission required a full overhaul. Concern that the recall calibration and adaptive strategy reset may accelerate internal wear or exacerbate pre-existing vulnerabilities in the 10R80 transmission.

ford knowingly put in a faulty CDF drum to cut corners and make more profit (hence the class action lawsuit) and transmission shifts erratically (1-3-5-10-1-6) safety concern. loss of power while driving

I purchased a 2019 Ford Expedition Max from Rivertown Ford – Group 1 Automotive (Columbus, GA) in 2022. During the test drive, I heard a rattling noise at startup and was told by my salesperson, Derrick, that it was just a “cold start.” I was shown a CarFax report claiming no recalls or major repairs. I later discovered this was false. An internal Ford OASIS report revealed that transmission work had been performed before sale, which Rivertown Ford never disclosed or reported to CarFax. Since purchase, my Expedition has had harsh shifting, delayed gear engagement, jerking, and sudden loss of acceleration, often without diagnostic codes—making it difficult to obtain warranty repairs under my Ford ESP plan. Rivertown Ford told me the transmission backlog meant I’d have to pay for my own rental vehicle and wait indefinitely for a technician. In March 2024, the vehicle shifted into neutral instead of drive while backing out of a driveway, rolling down uncontrollably and hitting two trees. Neither USAA (my insurer) nor Ford acknowledged that this incident matched the 10R80 transmission defect and TSB 23-2249 (Nov 2023), which addresses uncommanded neutral engagement and loss of power. I was never notified of this defect. My insurance labeled it an “at-fault” accident, raising my premiums drastically. My Expedition is now being serviced for TSB 23-2249 after new video evidence and stored code P07E06-00 confirmed the defect. Ford’s OASIS system—which hides warranty and powertrain repairs from the public—enabled this concealment. This issue has caused financial loss, emotional distress, and fear of driving, especially as this is our only family vehicle for transporting our children. I have video, audio, photos, and documentation proving these events and request NHTSA’s investigation into Ford’s 10R80 transmission defects and disclosure practices.

Crash: 1
After Ford Recall 24E13 (Powertrain Control Module reprogramming) was completed on my 2019 Ford Expedition Max, the vehicle immediately developed transmission problems. It began hesitating to go into reverse and then produced DTC P0736 (reverse gear ratio incorrect). Within days, it failed to shift properly and was returned by the dealership. The issue occurred only after the recall repair, indicating a possible calibration or programming fault that affected the powertrain. Ford dealership staff acknowledged metal in the fluid but gave inconsistent explanations and then claimed the transmission had to be replaced. The vehicle also displayed a “Powertrain System Fault” warning. No such problems existed before the recall. This raises a safety concern because transmission malfunction after a recall could cause loss of control or failure to move the vehicle. The vehicle was returned to us on October 7, 2025; it remains unsafe to drive. Ford Corporate has been notified (Case CXH-05773791-T4G0R8), but no resolution has been provided. I am requesting NHTSA review this as a potential post-recall powertrain safety failure related to Recall 24E13.

Catalytic converter signaled efficiency is low after the Emissions Recall 24 E 13 had been fixed 2025. There are 5 other expeditions in the dealership with the exact same problem. Had recall fixed one month later check engine light came on. Same problem emissions signal. Ford won’t fix it as they claim “it would have been caught during inspections of the vehicle when they run codes during any kind of service.” Even though it would not have been because the recall just came out May 2025 for it to correctly issue said signal.

Transmissions CDF Drum is failing annd causing my transmission to go out of gear and slam into first and I just preformed “cam phaser” repairs exceeding $3400. A vehicle this new should not need these repairs. There’s 1000s of complaints online and it’s sick and twisted that Ford is not forced to recall these issues.

Vehicle has a rattle upon starting. Also the vehicle is shifting harshly and slipping. Sometimes the vehicle will occasionally stop accelerating in the middle of the road. The RPMs will rise but the vehicle stops having power. After a minute it finally jerks and the vehicle will go again. I have had the vehicle examined by a technician and have been told that it is the cam phasers, CDF drum/transmission, and torque converter.

I am being told that the Cam Phasers need to be replaced. This is a well known issue to Ford. They did a programming adjustment in 2021, and then did replacements only if you had continued issues up until Jan 2023. I have issues now, and they are telling me I am not covered. The cam phasers have been redesigned so they know they installed poorly designed parts originally. This is an almost $4,000 repair.

At 60k miles the car started making noises when I start it. I took it in and they said it was the timing chain. Also my engine light keeps coming on and it says Emissions Error. I have purchased several Fords and I don’t plan on major repairs every 5 years. Especially the day it goes out of warranty. Apparently the timing chain is a big problem according to the repair company at around 5 years on these expeditions

During a recent visit on 6/6/2025 to the Ford dealership in Torrance for an oil change, I've informed the service staff of my concern for the diminishing coolant levels. Upon completion of the oil change, they've informed they did not find any issues with the coolant and did not find any signs of leaking. Today is June 30, 2025 and I've come to a local mechanic for a different concern of vehicle shaking and they found that the coolant was indeed leaking.

Cam Phasers were recalled a couple years ago. I had the recall done and they were replaced. They are now worse than ever. My car horribly rattles every single time that I start it up and also now rattles when it idles. I should not have to pay for this out of my pocket. The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the rear of the vehicle was bouncing excessively. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the rear suspension that needed to be replaced. The contact was also made aware that the rear sensors were not properly installed following a collision repair and were hanging down from the bumper. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, a case was opened, and the contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was 57,687.

The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that upon purchase of the vehicle, the rear driver’s side strut was replaced. Recently, the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for a routine maintenance check; while being inspected, the contact was informed that the passenger’s side rear and driver’s side front struts had been saturated with oil. The passenger’s side front strut had also started to leak but was not saturated in oil. The dealer was notified of the failure. The manufacturer was also notified of the failure and the contact was provided a case number. The contact was then referred to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 25,870.

All 4 struts and shocks are leaking. The vehicle has less than 30,000 miles. This is dangerous and will cause tire issues, stopping issues and more. A quick google search shows this exists on many expeditions. Diagnosed by mechanic during annual inspection. The parts are bad and others have reported the same issue at less than 10000 miles. Many states don’t require inspections so how many are out there with bad suspension?
Nov 06, 2023
Rear struts failed at approximately 36, 000 miles - the vehicle was unsafe driving down the interstate at speed due to the bouncing. Independent mechanic confirmed rear strut failure on driver and passenger side. Additionally, front driver side strut failed. In addition to bouncing, this made rear brakes wear out unusually quick. Steering became light due to the front strut. There was no warning lights to indicate an issue. Took to independent mechanic due to unavailability of maintenance appointments at Ford.

Yesterday, while I was driving to pick up my kids from school, my 2019 Ford Expedition, the driver’s side seatbelt literally exploded — it went off like it would in a crash (but there was no crash). I was driving when it exploded and tightened so tight on me. Now the seatbelt doesn’t work at all. It was terrifying, so loud and painful. This is part of a known recall issue. When the dealership had my car back in May to replace my cam phasers, they told me the seatbelt recall parts weren’t available yet. Fast forward to now — the seatbelt has gone off, the vehicle can’t be driven safely, and Ford (both the local dealership and customer service) is saying there’s nothing they can do for me right now. The dealership told me I would have to pay to have it towed and pay for a rental. Also, they aren’t sure how fast they can get parts or diagnose it. I’m honestly at a loss. This is a safety recall, and I can’t use my car because of it. I literally just paid $2400 in may for my cam phasers and now this.

In or around October I reported my Seatbelt tensioner/retractor explosive device deployed almost causing me to have an accident. After really complaining to Ford, they finally fixed it. Now my warning light came on pertaining to my passenger side tensioner. I also received the notice, and went to my dealership. They had the vehicle for a week and could not fix it. They said Ford has to ok it and supply the parts, and it could take all the way to the end of 2024. They gave me the vehicle back, refused a loaner and said their hands were tied. I can tell you first hand that someone may die or cause a serious accident if driving at high speed when the device deploys. It is as loud as a 45 cal or shotgun, inside the cab. The SPL is enormous and the seatbelt tightens 3 to 4 inches, causing disorientation, total fear and loss of control of the vehicle. My incident caused me to have irregular heartbeat and I ended up in the hospital. THEY NEED TO REPLACE THESE DEVICES ASAP, BEFOE SOMEONE DIES.

I purchased my 2019 Ford Expedition Max Limited on [XXX]. When we purchase the vehicle we signed a notice that we would have the recalls completed within a reasonable time. I took my vehicle for the recall to Feyer Ford in Edenton, North Carolina on May 30th. Prior to the recall I was having no issues at all with the vehicle. Once I pick the vehicle up on [XXX] and started my traveling home. Within 10 minutes of leaving, the vehicle made a loud screeching noise. The wrench light came on, and the vehicle seemed to not accelerate forward. I was able to pull off the road and turn the vehicle off. I called Feyer Ford to make them aware of the problem and they told me that it was because the PCM had been reprogrammed and would need to relearn how I drive. I had the same issue happen again further down the road, this is a very serious safety hazard that my vehicle suddenly stopped moving forward in traffic. I called Feyer Ford once again and was told that I had to drive the vehicle 1,000 miles before the PCM would relearn my driving patterns. I took the vehicle in on June 4th to have it checked out and was told that I would need a valve body replacement and torque converter replacement. That essentially my transmission was bad. Since that date the vehicle has gone into reverse numerous times when I put it in Drive, it will also get stuck in 4th 7th or 10th gear when you are trying to drive it in a parking lot or going slow on the road. When it gets stuck in those gears the vehicle will not go forward it will only allow you to go backwards. My car has been at Feyer Ford since July 29 trying to have the warranty cover the fix, but it was denied for warranty coverage because they stated the vehicle was broken by the recall. We were told we could pick up our un-fixed vehicle on Aug 27. We got the key and proceeded to leave only to find the car not put back together from a different seat belt recall. It is still at Feyer Ford today, September 6th 2025. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

We had been driving for 3 hours and was in an extremely busy area in Houston, Tx. While entering another highway in extremely congested area the transmission shifted out of gear into Neutral engine revved and shut down. After about 3 -5 seconds it kicked hard into gear and continues on our way. This has happened several times in the past and was taken in previously for same problem. By being in congested traffic and with cars speeding around and honking horns it was a tense moment. Reported to dealer and transmission was dismantled and a part replaced in the transmission. Still don't feel comfortable with the transmission. Prior to this incident there were no immediate warning signs.

1. My Transmission failed and the car came to a complete stop in the middle of the highway, ford could not assist in replacing the Transmission and I have heard so many complaints about the 10 speed transmissions failing just after reaching 100,000 mileage. Mine failed under 108,000 mileage and this has been going on for years and consumers end up spending thousands of dollars on a $70,000 vehicle. This issue needs to be addressed. I paid over $8,000 to replace the transmission. 2. Ford Expeditions and F150 have a trim piece on the center console that's covered by an aluminum wrap which pops off and it's very sharp, so many ford owners have been cut by that piece and ford only replaces the whole center console if the vehicle is under warranty as there's no other solution to replace only the trim but you get to replace the whole center console which's Expensive. 3. For 3.5L engines have continued to have cam phaser failure for the past few years but Ford doesn't seem to address this issue which cost customers millions of dollars every year, we the customers do know that Ford benefits from selling parts and Ford 100% knows how expensive it's to replace a cam phaser which cam cost anywhere from $4,000 in parts and labor. We hope that NHTSA can step up and have ford address these issues.

My Ford Expedition Max started to make a rattling noise after I start the vehicle, if the car was running for a while I could turn it off and on again and wouldnt hear the noise, but if the engine was cold it would make a rattling noise when started. Then if I do not let the SUV warm up long enough and start driving it would have a point where it would do a random hard slow down before it would kick into gear and then it would feel like it was running fine. This started a few weeks ago the I was driving on the highway and while i was doing about 55MPH the suv made a loud noise that made the vehicle change speed dramatically it cause me to be whiplashed forward before the engine seemed to catch back up to its orevious actions, it did not actually cause an accident at that point (but it very well could have if the road was busy as it was a dramatic chnage in speed as well as the noise it made). I pulled over to inspect but there was nothing in the road and nothing that was being done that seemed to cause the traumatic issue. The next day when I brought the car to the mechanic and explained the issue he was able to diagnose an issue with the timing chain. Upopn some resaerch there many complaints and issues with my that make/models particular engine and parts that have had issues but the dealer would not assist saying there is no formal recall and at 69K miles I am over the warrenty. My car doesnot have any codes or warning lights and has all regularly scheduled maintenance and repairs done regularly but the car is clearly not driving correctly, This issue is causing the SUV to dramatically change speed while driving which is likely to cause an accident and severe injury.

My 2019 Ford Expedition started making some loud noises while accelerating and wouldn’t accelerate as usual when I pressed the gas pedal — there was a noticeable delay in gear shifting and acceleration. Often when I did shift gears, there would be a very loud clunking sound. It got much worse over the course of several days. At one point, I was on the highway and needed to accelerate quickly to maneuver around other vehicles —I pressed the gas and there was no acceleration— the vehicle just stayed at the current speed and it was a couple beats before the vehicle responded to me pressing down hard in the gas pedal. It did finally accelerate, but it was very delayed. It was a very unsafe experience. I have since learned there is a known issue with the transmission on these vehicles that causes this issue.

When driving the vehicle shifts very hard and has a loud clanging in second and fifth gear. It skips those gears and will lag in intersections and on roadways because of the skip. Had it diagnosed by a transmission shop and they said it needed cam phasers. Took it to the dealer and the said it needed a new valve body as the issue was repeatable. Had the valve body replaced and it is still doing it and even worse. No lights came on, and we bought the vehicle used with 81k miles on it and we noticed it right away, so the dealer did a “reprogram” of the software and said it was fine. It started to do it again right away and we called the dealer and they would not return our call. We drove it because we had too until it got bad enough we didn’t feel safe driving it anymore and now it is waiting for the hopes that a new transmission will fix the issue.

The 10 speed transmission has harsh shifting, jerking, hesitation, slipping, delayed gear changes and lurching forward while driving. The issue is apparent typically between 3rd and 4th gear, and 6th and 7th gear. The dealership mentioned it was a computer programming issue and has reset it twice, but the car continues to have these issues. Apparently this issue is cause by the way the drum was manufactured according this Ford Technician: [XXX] If it's a known issue, and it was fixed in the newer models, I hope Ford does a recall to replace. I own a 2019 Ford Expedition Max (10R80 trans) & have experienced intermit. issues with the vehicle failing to shift into a higher gear when accelerating rapidly & getting stuck in a high RPM unless the accelerator is released. When releasing the accelerator there is a violent clunk & jerking. I have expressed this issue to Ford’s Service Department at the dealership. When intaking my vehicle the service advisor made a comment to another advisor that we have another Expedition with shifting issues. The advisor stated that this seemed to be a common issue with these vehicles, so I researched the issue online myself & found several threads with the same reported issue to include class action lawsuit websites for this issue. I paid Ford’s Service Department to diagnose the vehicle and they found no issues with the transmission and said it was okay and they weren’t able to replicate the issue (this is because it is an intermit. issue). The advisor stated that the transmission has an adaptive learn system and stated that the adaptive learn could be having issues, so I asked them to keep the vehicle and flash the adaptive learn or do a reset. I had them flash the system and it seemed to resolve the issue for a while, but it later returned. I then attempted contacting Ford Customer Service (Corporate) directly and explained the issue to them however they directed right back to the dealership. Recently I went to West Virginia for vacation and was traveling on the interstate. While traveling on the interstate at about 55 mph I was in a situation where I needed to rapidly accelerate due to an 18-wheeler changing lanes into my lane. The vehicle failed to accelerate/shift into a higher gear and being stuck in high RPMs. We were nearly KILLED in this incident and this is what prompted me to contact the NHTSA. I am also a law enforcement officer of over 15 years. It is my professional and personal opinion that this issue is an EXTREME DANGER to the occupants of these vehicles.

In June 2024, my 2019 Ford Expedition experienced serious transmission and powertrain problems. Diagnostic testing identified catalyst efficiency codes (P0430), and I was given a repair estimate that included catalytic converter replacement. The vehicle also displayed repeated “Service Engine Soon” and “Powertrain Malfunction/Reduced Power” warnings. Because the vehicle became undrivable and the repair costs were unaffordable, I was forced to release it to auction in June 2024, resulting in a significant financial loss. In April 2025, Ford issued Recall 24E13 acknowledging that PCM programming errors could falsely trigger catalyst efficiency codes (such as P0430), potentially leading to unnecessary catalytic converter replacements, exactly the condition my vehicle experienced. This recall defect directly contributed to the loss I suffered, as I still owed about $11,000 on the vehicle when I could no longer use it. I have already opened a case with Ford (Case #CXH05645573C2W6R6), but I have not received meaningful assistance. When I contacted Ford Customer Service, I was not offered escalation or resolution. I was only told to call another phone number, which left my case unresolved. I respectfully request that NHTSA review Ford’s handling of this defect, including the financial impact on owners like myself who incurred substantial losses before the recall was announced.

The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that while his wife was driving on a neighborhood road at an undisclosed speed, the steering wheel seized. There were no warning lights illuminated. The driver proceeded to pull over, and the vehicle was towed to a local dealer to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the electronic steering control module was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 58,000.

The vehicle's steering wheel became very loose at ~50k miles making it wobbly and potential to fall off which could cause danger while driving and possibility of airbag deployment. As seen in the attached pictures, there was no thread locker on the bolt that tightens the steering wheel down. I was able to remove it simply with my hands upon a few twist.

1 . AFTER A LEFT TURN THE VEHICLE CONTINUES TO PULL LEFT (MEASURED AT ABOUT 4 POUNDS OF FORCE ON THE STEERING WHEEL TO HOLD STRAIGHT) UNTIL A RIGHT TURN IS MADE TO CANCEL THE LEFT PULL THEN IT TRACKS STRAIGHT. THERE WERE SIMILAR RESULTS ON RIGHT TURNS BUT WORSE ON LEFTS. 2 . THESE TESTS WERE ALSO DONE ON ANOTHER NEW FORD PLATINUM EXPEDITION IDENTICALLY EQUIPPED WITH THE SAME RESULTS (BOTH WITH HEAVY DUTY TOW PACKAGE) 3 . THE NEW EXPEDITION ABOVE DID SEEM TO REQUIRE A LITTLE LESS RIGHT CORRECTIVE PRESSURE THAN OUR EXPEDITION BUT THE LEFT PULL WAS APPROXIMATELY THE SAME 4 . THESE TESTS WERE DONE WITH AND WITHOUT LANE KEEPING WITH NO CHANGE TO THE RESULTS 5 . THESE TESTS WERE DONE WITH AND WITHOUT SWAY CONTROL WITH NO CHANGE TO THE RESULTS 6 . APPROXIMATE TRAILER WEIGHT 6000 LBS. AND APPROXIMATELY 600 LBS. TONGUE WEIGHT 7 . DURING THE LEFT PULL THE VEHICLE WILL 'BLOW' THROUGH THE LANE KEEPER ON THE LEFT BUT WORKS OK ON THE RIGHT 8. TESTS WERE ALSO MADE WITH A TOTALLY DIFFERENT TRAILER AND HITCH SYSTEM WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. 9. THE TESTS WERE DONE WITH AND WITHOUT LOAD TRANSFER BARS. THE LEFT PULL REMAINED AFTER A LEFT TURN BUT WAS A BIT LESS WITHOUT THE LOAD TRANSFER BARS ATTACHED (THAT WAS SURPRISING). 10. FORD HAS REPLACED THE ENTIRE STEERING SYSTEM (INCLUDING RACK AND PINION UNIT WITH STEERING CONTROL MODULE AND YAW SENSE MODULE) AFTER THEY CHECKED ALL WHEEL ALIGNMENTS WITH NO IMPROVEMENT IN STEERING PROBLEM. 11. THIS PROBLEM ALSO HAPPENS WITH NO TRAILER IN TOW JUST NOT TO THE SAME EXTENT. 12. FORD HAS NOW REFUSED TO DO ANYTHING MORE TO RESOLVE THE STEERING PROBLEM. NOTE: I DO HAVE VIDEO FOR THIS PROBLEM ON THE ROAD.

FYI re: Request #[XXX] Let me know if you have any info I sent this letter on November 20, 2022 and as of January 10, 2023 I have had no response from Ford Motors: [XXX] Office of the CEO Ford Motor Company 1 American Road Dearborn, Michigan 48126 Re: 2019 Ford Expedition ACC-Cruise Control Potential Safety Problem Mr. [XXX], I wanted to let you know of a bizarre recent ACC cruise control issue with my 2019 Expedition. It has ~30,000 miles on it and has performed very well without problem before and after this incident. Several weeks ago I was driving on an interstate highway in a construction zone with stop and go traffic, and had the ACC on. I slowed down behind a dull colored black Chevrolet pickup that had dark lens covers over the tail lights and a dark cover over the license plate to about 5 MPH. Suddenly the ACC had full acceleration then the auto safety braking slowed me abruptly, then the ACC hit full acceleration again and the auto brake engaged. I turned the ACC off, and then back on, and it did the exact acceleration and safety braking so I turned the ACC off. There was no accident or problem other than this acceleration/braking sequence. When I no longer was behind the pickup I tried and ACC and it has worked perfectly since then, as it had prior to this bizarre issue The ACC seemed to not see this pickup truck but the auto safety braking system did. The pickup was an unusual non factory appearing paint job, dark gray or black not just a primer, and the tail lights and license plates also had some darkening coating. It seemed to be Stealth to the ACC, but not to the braking system. Maybe referred to the Engineering Section of the ACC group to see if they have heard of this before or have any idea what occurred to help prevent any risks involving the Ford ACC system. Again there was no accident or collision, only the sudden acceleration/braking. This only occurred one time on this 2019 Expedition and never on our other Ford products. The main interface screen for GPS, Radio, Bluetooth (hands free phone operation), backup camera, and other vehicle settings, is malfunctioning and frequently non-responsive. This is tied to a faulty ACCESSORY PROTOCOL INTERFACE MODULE (APIM), also known as the SYNC 3 Module. Research on the issue shows this is a common issue with Ford Vehicles. The fixes reported in TSB 20-2255 05 August 2020 have been completed, the issues are persisting. The failure of this item creates safety issues with operating the vehicle. I was on the freeway going between 65-70mph when I felt a hard shift and lost all acceleration. The truck started to slow down and the wrench light came on. I was able to coast to the shoulder and turn my hazards on while the wrench light and warnings were going. I parked the truck and waited for my husband to help. The truck sat for approximately 20 minutes when it was turned back on. There were no lights on the dash and the wrench warning went away [XXX] husband was able to drive it home. FORD IS AWARE OF A DESIGN DEFECT THAT CAUSES THE VCT SYSTEM TO WEAR OUT WITHIN A SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME IN BRAND NEW EXPEDITIONS. WHEN THE VCT SYSTEM WEARS OUT, THE VEHICLE IMMEDIATELY TRANSITIONS INTO "LIMP MODE" , WHICH CAUSES THE VEHICLE TO IMMEDIATELY (UNSAFELY) DECELERATE TO A SPEED OF 15MPH (OR LESS ON HILLS), CREATING DANGEROUS SITUATIONS, PARTICULARLY ON HIGHWAYS AND WHEN TOWING. WE PURCHASED OUR EXPEDITION IN MARCH 2019, BRAND NEW. WE PURCHASED THE VEHICLE WITH THE HEAVY DUTY TOW PACKAGE, WHICH PROVIDES TOWING UP TO 9,300LBS. WITHIN A FEW MONTHS, THE VEHICLE BEGAN MAKING A LOUD RATTLE AT START UP, LASTING A FEW SECONDS. WE DILIGENTLY SERVICED THE VEHICLE ONLY AT FORD DEALERSHIPS, WHO ROUTINELY SAID THE RATTLE WAS "FINE" OR "WITHIN SPEC." ON 9/1/2020, WHILE TOWING OUR AIRSTREAM TRAILER (~7,000 LBS) ON INTERSTATE HIGHWAY 86 THROUGH WINDSOR, NY, THE VEHICLE THREW ON THE "WRENCH LIGHT" AND RAPIDLY DECELERATED FROM 55MPH TO 10MPH. WE WERE AT THE BOTTOM OF A LONG INCLINE, IN MODERATELY HEAVY TRAFFIC (65MPH). THERE WAS AN INSUFFICIENT SHOULDER TO STOP WITH OUR TRAILER, SO WE VERY SLOWLY CREPT FOR MILES TO THE NEAREST EXIT. THE CLOSEST FORD DEALERSHIPS REFUSED TO LOOK AT IT. IT WAS EVENTUALLY TOWED TO ONEONTA FORD. DESPITE KNOWING OF TSB 20-2315 (AND ITS PREDECESSORS), FORD CLAIMED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS "FINE" AND LIKELY JUST SUFFERED A BAD OIL CHANGE. AFTER SPENDING 12 DAYS WITH OUR VEHICLE, THEY RETURNED IT, PERFORMING ONLY AN OIL CHANGE. THE RATTLE REMAINED AND FORD CLAIMED THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO. ON 10/9/2020, THE VERY NEXT TIME WE ATTEMPTED TO TOW, ON COUNTY HIGHWAY 2, THE VEHICLE AGAIN, ABRUPTLY WENT FROM 55 TO10MPH ON A LONG, SLOW INCLINE IN MODERATE TRAFFIC. WE TURNED AROUND (WITH THE TRAILER) ON A 2 LANE ROAD. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED BACK TO FORD, WHO RELUCTANTLY (AFTER WEEKS) REPLACED THE VCT SYSTEM PER TSB 20-2315.

On three separate occasions, my vehicle lost the ability to accelerate. The first time I was attempting to pass slow moving farm equipment when my vehicle lost power, had a loud vibrating/rattling noise and multiple dashboard warnings flashed. Luckily, I was able to merge back into my lane and pull off the side of the road. I took the vehicle in for service and was told I needed new phasers. Once I got my vehicle back, I was still experiencing issues. Fortunately, the next two times my vehicle lost power I was driving at low speeds. I did have my kids with me on one occasion and it scared them quite a bit. I am not sure what the loud noise is but they stopped riding with me after that. Thank goodness I was not driving my family on the highway when experiencing a power failure. My vehicle is back at a dealership waiting for a new transmission.

My Ford Expedition has lost power 4 times requiring me to pull off the Interstate and have the car towed. I have been driving 75-80 mph each time this has happened. It is as if the car takes a big deep breath, and then loses all power. It failed most recently on Halloween 2023, and then again in March of 2024. Prior to these two times, the car has lost power 2 other times. It has always been serviced at a Ford dealership. All three times INCLUDING this last time the dash lights on the car have read, "powertrain failure" and "pre-collision brake assist not available". When it failed in March, even though it registered a code both on my dash and in my Ford Pass App, the dealership said they could not reproduce the problem therefore, there was nothing they could fix. I am scared to get behind the wheel of this car. I also do not want to sell it to anyone else for fear they will have the same problem. Cars don't just lose power while driving 75 mph. It is dangerous and a definite safety concern. It is not like I am driving a pinto. This was a brand new car, is fully paid for, has clean maintenance records, and is an expensive vehicle. It has been well taken care of and should not have power failure four times at only 4 years old. It is terrifying to be driving at high speed and lose power. I have been very lucky to not have caused a secondary accident on the freeway, or been in an accident myself when this has happened.

The driver and passanger rear doors have issues with the doul latches. They do not always security shut and the doors swing open while driving. When the temperatures drop, the latches do not work, therefore, the doors do not securely shut. I am writing to urgently request the initiation of a safety investigation concerning a serious and potentially widespread defect in Ford vehicles, specifically related to the center console’s metal chrome trim on limited models. I own a Ford Expedition, purchased in October 2019, and have encountered a severe issue where the chrome plating on the center console has begun peeling away, forming sharp, dangerous shards that have already caused significant injury to myself and my children. Despite numerous attempts to resolve this issue through Ford’s customer service since first discovering the defect in 2020, the response has been dismissive, labeling the condition as "normal wear and tear." This is despite the fact that the sharp edges of the peeling chrome required medical attention on multiple occasions. The severity of this defect goes far beyond cosmetic degradation and enters the realm of serious safety hazard. Furthermore, this issue does not appear to be isolated. An examination of online consumer forums and resale platforms such as eBay reveals similar complaints from other Ford owners who note identical peeling issues in the same model and in analogous locations on the console. Historical precedence shows that similar defects in past models, like the Ford Explorer, have led to recalls. It is alarming that Ford has not only failed to recognize the defect as a legitimate safety concern but has also continued to sidestep responsibility even after the original factory warranty expired. This lack of accountability for a defect that directly impacts the physical safety of passengers and drivers is unacceptable. Given the potential risk to consumers and the apparent recurrence of this issue across multiple vehicles, I implore the NHTSA to initiate a thorough investigation into this matter. It is imperative that a recall be considered to prevent further injuries and ensure that Ford addresses this serious safety flaw promptly and effectively.

I own 2019 Expedition had a powertrain malfunction happened to me around 48k miles a few years back on the I35 by Pauls Valley, OK and we all most got ran off the road. Scary. Was able to get home which was 30 minutes away on back road going about 35mph. Next morning no, light vehicle was fine. I did report this to my local Ford dealer, Charles Allen Ford in Chickasha, OK. Was advised it was most likely due to condensation within a sensor or weather change. I trusted them on their assessment since it hasn’t happened again. This past Monday coming from sons football game which is 26 miles away it happens again, vehicle stalling and we almost got hit by a Semi truck. I currently have 84k miles Next morning was fine. No codes showing and vehicle ran as usual. I told Jim Allen who owns the Charles Allen Ford about this when I seen Tuesday at the local YMCA. he advised probably weather change within a sensor. Told me to bring it for a check and they would take care of me. I didn’t as I don’t have the money to do that, especially after hearing other stories how the dealership kept the vehicle for weeks to months without finding an issue. So I took to my neighbor owns a diesel mechanic shop so we put on lift and check transmission fluid, clear and no flakes. Check lines although I do have a coolant / water hose leakage, which I order the part for. Ford needs to address this issue. I’m a [XXX] who depends on my vehicle to go to much needed VA appointments in Oklahoma City. Please help. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

When entering the vehicle and closing all doors, one pushes the start button. Once starting to drive or reverse, an error message appears "Transmission Not in Park". The error message stays until the vehicle is put into motion. Then when coming to a stop, the error message reappears. It is understood the transmission is not in park because one is attempting to drive the vehicle. The vehicle drives fine, but the message appears repeatedly while in reverse and or drive. Many forums have suggested the rotary dial to engage the different drive modes is not speaking with the door latches. No other warnings appear and no doors are ajar.

The contact stated that he used a rope to tie the door to another door to keep the door securely closed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and was inspected. The dealer determined that the door handle assembly needed to be replaced and informed the contact that the VIN was not included in a recall. The vehicle was also taken to an independent mechanic, where the same assessment was made. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a case was opened. Vehicle parked and had just been started. Went to put on dvr seatbelt and a loud explosion happened to my left and the seatbelt shoulder strap was pulled out of my fingers. The driver seatbelt pretensioner activated without a collision and the cab filled with smoke. Vehicle has never been in a collision, ever had a restraint malfunction, is the original OEM safety component, and hasn’t been serviced/replaced for a seatbelt/airbag issue. Now, the air bag light is activated and the seatbelt is tightly fully retracted to the pillar so tight it can’t be moved at all. Access to the onboard computer can verify all the above info. Dealership stated there was an activation of the pretensioned charge on the driver seatbelt resulting in the belt fully retracting and the seatbelt no longer functioning. 2nd 2019 Ford Expedition they have seen this week with the same mishap. If this would have deployed at highway speeds, a driver may have been startled due to the loud explosion in the cab and lost control of the vehicle (I was parked). Smoke immediately entered the occupant compartment. The seat belt retracted so quickly/tightly, injury to one’s chest would have occurred.

WITH LESS THAN 3 WKS BEFORE THE DUE DATE APPROACHING, WE SCRAMBLED AND BROUGHT THE VEHICLE TO THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP IN WHICH THEY INDICATED IT IS ILLEGAL FOR AN ADULT TO RIDE IN A VEHICLE WITHOUT A HEADREST AND THEY WERE SHOCKED IN THE POOR DESIGN. FORD NEEDS THEIR ENGINEERING TEAM TO IMMEDIATELY RESOLVE THIS ISSUE, AS ANOTHER COMPLAINT WAS FILED WITH NHTSA IN JANUARY REGARDING THIS SAME ISSUE. THEY NEED TO COVER THE COST TO HAVE DEALERSHIP REMOVE THE HEADRESTS MANUALLY ($600 ESTIMATE) BY TEARING APART THE SEATS OR HAVE A LIST OF FORWARD FACING CAR SEATS THAT ACTUALLY WORK FOR THE 3RD ROW IN WHICH THE COST TO US WOULD PROBABLY BE A WASH FOR NEW SEATS IF THERE ARE ANY THAT WORK FOR IT! The rear-view camera does not work 80+% of the time. It usually fails to connect at all and I do not have visibility or access to the rearview camera when backing up (in reverse). This has been ongoing for well over a year now and has been progressively getting worse. Before it would just happen once every 20-30 times or so but now it happens every day I use the vehicle about 80-90% of the time. This has resulted in at least 3 narrow-miss accidents so far as I can't see what directly behind me. On more limited occasions, if the rear camera does show up and connect, it will display the rear image upside down, sometimes it will freeze on the screen and won't go away even when not engaged in Reverse thus not allowing access to the screen. It continues to happen every day I use the car and most days the rear camera will not ever connect.

Was returning home from a drive on a freeway and noticed that car started shaking violently on right side rear of vehicle, like tires were loose, when I was close to the exit. Upon exiting freeway I noticed that vehicle at 20mph speeds+ (more noticeable at 25mph+) the car began shaking. Car shakes as well throughout braking. I took it to the tire shop to see if it was a tire issue or a balance issue, but the shop informed it wasn't a tire issue but possibly a CV related. Because I'm feeling the vibrations more from one side of vehicle, thinking it could be related to the toe link. Seeing car parked on driveway, it does seem to be leaning more to the right in the rear of the vehicle

Approximately One week ago, I was on the freeway when at 70 miles an hour warning light came in with brake system. Failure came up, and I lost all power to the vehicle and shut down and I tried restarting it on neutral. I was in traffic, which made it more difficult to go onto the side of the road went to I was in the center divider. There was no power of any kind to left side of vehicle windows, door locks, etc. the vehicle was towed to the dealership in San Diego where they told me they couldn’t look at the vehicle For over a month, but their service tech and the repair person from the dealership was unable to attach a computer to the vehicle scanner was not showing anything wrong. I then had the vehicle towed again to my home where the dealer had told me it was a battery however I purchased a new battery from the dealer , and it made no difference approximately three days later I started the vehicle to roll up the window that was down and everything seem to work however, I put it in and proceeded forward. The same situation occurred once again with the statement system system failure, but this time parking assist downhill Was also showing on the dashboard warning indicator. I have replaced the motor transmission and turbo on this back in January 2024. Vehicle is still under warranty however this seems to be a problem if the vehicle is cutting out with very minimal warning and shutting down on the freeway, this can cause an accident with myself and anybody near me , because the vehicle and the braking system shut down. I don’t know if this is a recall, but it’s something that should be looked at in a timely matter. Please contact me with further details. God bless.

Since we bought our car, it has had a rattle upon startup. This was originally a recall, which we got repaired, but this repair did not make the rattle go away. I then had a transmission problem and had to have the transmission overhauled due to it having violent, jerky, unpredictable shifting between gears. When I mentioned the rattle again while they were fixing the transmission, they said that it’s a known problem with Ford cam phasers around our model year. They informed me that the fix offered in the recall was an electronic fix, but the actual parts need to be replaced and the recall didn’t cover that. The parts replacement was almost $4000, and from my research, not replacing these parts can cause the engine to stop functioning properly over time. In the past two weeks, I have been getting safety notices from my car that there are timing issues that need to be serviced. Contacting Ford did not help as there is no active recall for this problem. From my research, there is an active lawsuit open against Ford for this cam phaser problem with my year model car. Overall, cam phasers play a critical role in enhancing the efficiency, performance, and reliability of 10-speed engines by enabling precise control over the engine’s valve timing. However, after just replacing my transmission we cannot afford to pay another $4000 for this error. Ford said they cannot help unless there is a recall on the vehicle.

For months now I have noticed a significant increase in the handling of my car to the point it is erratic and almost hard to drive, I have had my alignment looked at and have also seen that the inside of my rear tires is wearing more than the others as told to me in service reports for my car. A recall was put out for my vehicle which seems to be affected by almost every single recall but it says my car is not affected by this one. Which is The rear suspension toe link fasteners may not have been properly tightened to the frame, possibly allowing separation from the frame and tighten the rear toe link fasteners, check and adjust the rear toe alignment, and inspect the rear tires for abnormal tire wear, replacing them if necessary. I think if anyone else has had similar issues this recall needs to be expanded to other vehicles.

The 10R80 transmission started delayed shifts between 8,9,10. After 50 miles the issue spread to the lower gears. When going from 3rd to 4th or 5th the engine speeds up vehicle loses speed. To recover let your foot off the gas and then apply gas very gently. After another 50 miles shifting became more erratic, sometimes with a load clunk. My safety has been at risk because you cannot count on the vehicle to do a smooth acceleration during a traffic merge. If you are in a lineup doing a merge suddenly you cannot keep pace because the transmission is shifting erratically. The vehicle has been at the dealer from October 3rd within in line for repair. They have stated Ford is just overwhelmed with 10R80 repairs. Based upon public information the Ford 10R80 transmission has some major flaws. Received an orange wrench message telling me repairs are required. I know that by its behavior. Filed a case with Ford Customer Care program, so far no help.

It seemed like an airbag had deployed. I had a restraint indicator light on at that point. It was taken to a Ford dealership where they told me it couldn’t have been an airbag it was just a faulty seatbelt sensor. Which by the way there was a recall for that exact thing on the 2020 but, not the 2019 so 750$ later.. they’re going to fix it.

On July 24th 2023, at approximately 2:15pm my wife and I were completely stopped at a red traffic light on 66th St N that crosses Ulmerton Rd in Pinellas County Florida. We were talking and listening to the radio, when all of a sudden, a loud shotgun or explosive sound filled the vehicle. I got hit with something in the chest that felt like a punch or a kick, knocking me out of breath. But my wife only heard the extremely loud noise. I was clutching my chest in pain as I thought I was shot. When the light turned green, I immediately pulled into a Dunkin donuts parking lot, and we exited the vehicle. There was no damage whatsoever on the inside and outside of the vehicle, but we smelled gun powder. My driver's seatbelt was stuck in the retracted position. I slowly drove to my home at 6500 30th Avenue N, St Petersburg, Fl 33710. I immediately called the Pinellas County Sheriff's Department to report the incident, because at the time I thought it was a gunshot. They have a record under my phone number. I had no idea what the loud gun sound was, so I started to research and found the driver's seat belt tensioner charge must have gone off. I called Auto Nation Ford and made an emergency appointment to bring the vehicle in. I explained everything to them, then dropped the vehicle off. Upon doing a full inspection, the Auto Nation Ford mechanic determined there was a factory short in the air bag circuit, which caused the seatbelt tensioner charge to explode. They found the location, under the center console & replaced all necessary wiring, sensors, modules, tensioner & seatbelt. I researched and found recalls for 2020 Expeditions and 2018 F150 pickups, but there was no recall for the 2019 Expedition. I can't imagine what would have happened if we were going fast on an interstate when it happened. Now I get in my 2 Ford vehicles and worry about it happening again. t turned out the kick in the chest was the seatbelt retracting 4 inches pulling me back in the seat.

Our SUV has had problems in trying pick up speed. It started a few years back when I was taking a right turn and as I pushed on the gas pedal the SUV would not take off. We took it into the dealership but they could not recreate this problem. Yet, the problem persisted for us so we took it again to a different dealership and again they could not recreate the problem. Now our check engine light is on and the problem is getting worse. I called the dealership last week to bring it in and they could not get me in until mid-Septmember. One major incident occured when we were merging on the highway with lots of traffic and the SUV would not pick up speed. Some warning lights came on our dashboard and we had to immediately pull over to the side because the SUV would not pick up speed and it starting puttering. We were almost hit from behind by another vehicle due to the SUV not picking up speed. This problem has progressively been getting worse and I am afraid to drive the vehicle anywhere. I could be driving as slow as 30mph and trying to speed up causes the SUV to shake and putter. Now, when this happens the A/C does not cool. It feels like the SUV will shut off while I am driving. Plus, now the Engine Start/Stop feature no longer works. We have 4 kids and I am scared to drive this SUV as I feel this may cause us to be in a car accident. This is a major safety issue that needs to be addressed.

FRONT FUEL TANK STRAP BOLT CAME OUT CAUSING THE FUEL TANK TO DROP FROM THE VEHICLE. THE DEALER FOUND ZERO DAMAGE OR ANY REASON FOR THE FAILURE. THE SERVICE WRITER TELLS ME THE PROBABLE CAUSE WAS AN ASSEMBLY LINE ISSUE WHERE THE BOLT WAS NOT TIGHT ENOUGH.
