The contact owns a 2005 Ford Freestar. The contact stated while driving 70 MPH and releasing the accelerator pedal, the contact noticed an abnormal clucking sound. The contact stated that upon depressing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle failed to respond. The contact pulled to the side of the road. The contact stated he was able to continue driving; however, the failure persisted. The contact stated that upon depressing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle only responded when the RPMs were high, and the vehicle failed to exceed 30 MPH. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed that the torque converter output shaft had failed. The mechanic determined that the torque converter and the output shaft needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer was not contacted. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 12V006000 (Power Train). The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that they could not assist because the vehicle was previously repaired under the recall. The failure mileage was approximately 350,000.

The contact stated that upon selling the vehicle, she allowed another individual to test drive the vehicle; however, as the contact was driving on an incline, the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the flex shaft had failed. The contact then stated that upon research, she became aware of NHTSA Campaign Number: 12V00600 (Power Train). The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that she received notification of the NHTSA Campaign Number: 13V081000 (Seats). The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the contact was informed that due to the condition of the vehicle the recall repair could not be performed. The contact was concerned that when the vehicle was taken to the dealer, the VIN was entered and displayed a different color. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 180,000.

AN INCIDENT FROM ABOUT A MONTH AGO: AFTER TRAVELING ON THE FREEWAY AND COMING TO A STOP AT A RED LIGHT AT THE OFF RAMP AT 2AM, MY CAR BEGAN TO SPUTTER AND REV. I PROCEEDED TO THE NEXT RED LIGHT WHERE MY CAR SHUT OFF. EVERY TIME I STARTED IT, IT WOULD SHUT OFF RIGHT AWAY. I DRIVE FOR A TAXI SERVICE AND LUCKILY I DID NOT HAVE PASSENGERS IN THE CAR WITH ME AT THE TIME. I CALLED A FAMILY MEMBER TO COME LOOK AND HELP. HE ENDED UP PUSHING MY CAR WITH HIS INTO A NEARBY PARKING LOT. AFTER SOME INVESTIGATION, I CONCLUDED IT WAS THE PCM. IT WAS TAKEN OUT TO DRY COMPLETELY AND THE WINDSHIELD AREA WHERE WATER MAY HAVE LEAKED INTO IT WAS SEALED WITH SILICONE. IT STARTED WORKING AGAIN FINE AND HAS BEEN SINCE THEN. NOW IT HAS RAINED AGAIN AND THE PROBLEM HAS REOCCURRED. TODAY, AFTER DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY AND ENTERING A NEIGHBORHOOD, MY TRANS-AXLE LIGHT STARTED BLINKING. THEN MY OIL AND BATTERY LIGHT APPEARED AND SECONDS AFTER MY STEERING WHEEL STOPPED TURNING AND THE CAR SHUT OFF. I WAS ABLE TO PARK IN THE STREET AND RESTART THE CAR, BUT ONCE I PUT IT IN DRIVE AND MOVED ABOUT 1 FOOT, THE CAR SHUT OFF AGAIN. IT WILL TURN ON AND STAY IDLE, BUT ONCE I START MOVING, IT SHUTS OFF AGAIN. IT HAS BEEN RAINING THE PAST 2 DAYS. I SUSPECT IT IS FROM THE SAME ISSUE AS BEFORE. I ALSO HAD MY CHILDREN IN THE CAR WITH ME AS I WAS TAKING THEM TO SCHOOL. I'M VERY LUCKY THIS DID NOT HAPPEN ON THE FREEWAY OR MAJOR STREET.

DROVE THE VEHICLE 1 MILE TO KIDS SCHOOL ON THE WAY BACK IT LOST POWER , WOULDN'T ACCELERATE .. THE #40 FUSE WAS BLOWN AND EVERY TIME I REPLACE IT AS SOON AS I TURN THE KEY ON IT BLOWS AGAIN. WHEN IS THE NHTSA GOING TO GET SERIOUS WITH FORD ON FORCING THEM TO ISSUE A RECALL ON THE PCM THAT SHUTS DOWN THE ENGINE AND PUTS THE DRIVER AND PASSENGERS IN A DEATH VEHICLE. WHEN IT'S RAINING OR WET SNOW OUTSIDE THE VAN STARTS TO CHUG. THIS CAUSES THE VEHICLE TO HAVE LOSS OF POWER AND IT BECOMES JERKY. THE ENGINE LIGHT STARTS TO FLASH. HAVE HAD OFF AND ON PROBLEMS FOR THE PAST YEAR RESULTING IN ABOUT $2000 OF SERVICE TO FIGURE OUT WHY CAR ACTING UP, SURGING, INABILITY TO SHIFT, AT TIMES NO FORWARD OR REVERSE GEAR. ONE TIME DROVE 25 MPH TO GET HOME 20 MILES AND POLICE STOPPED ME BECAUSE SUSPICIOUS DRIVING. I TOLD HIM I WAS HAVE TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS. TRANSMISSION AS IT TURNS OUT IS PERFECT. PCM IS MALFUNCTIONING INTERMITTENTLY BECAUSE OF ENGINEERING PROBLEM OF PCM SHORTING OUT.TOWED TO FORD DEALER AND SAID NEEDED $2-5000 TRANSMISSION. TOWED HOME AND SUDDENLY STARTED WORKING. INVESTIGATED THIS BULLETIN THAT THE FORD DEALER WAS NOT FAMILIAR WITH AND THEY ACCEPTED MY INFORMATION DESCRIBING THE BULLETIN TO THEM. WHY HAS THIS PROBLEM NOT RISEN TO THE RECALL STATUS GIVEN THE EXTREME DANGER ON THE HIGHWAY DRIVING AND LOOSING ALL CONTROL OF THE CAR CAUSING A VERY DANGEROUS PERILOUS SITUATION TO ME MY FAMILY AND OTHERS ON THE ROAD?

WATER DRIPPED FROM THE WIPER BLADE COWL INTO THE PCM, CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO START, DRIVE BRIEFLY, AND THEN SHUT OFF WHILE MOVING, CAUSING LOSS OF CONTROL OF ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS OF THE VEHICLE WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY. STEERING BECAME DIFFICULT. IF THIS HAD HAPPENED AT HIGH SPEEDS OR WITH A LOT OF TRAFFIC AROUND, IT COULD HAVE BEEN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS OR DEADLY. THE MECHANIC SAYS THIS IS A PROBLEM HE SEES WITH FORD WINDSTAR VEHICLES. THE MECHANIC STATED THE PCM WAS LITERALLY UNDER WATER WHEN HE RECEIVED THE VEHICLE, DESPITE THE CAUSE BEING A FAIRLY TYPICAL RAIN STORM, AND DRYING OUT THE PCM DID NOT HELP, AS THE DAMAGE HAD ALREADY BEEN DONE. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE THAT, AFTER SEARCHING ONLINE AND SPEAKING WITH MECHANICS, APPEARS TO BE COMMON. FORD NEEDS TO FIX THIS ISSUE BEFORE A VEHICLE LOSES CONTROL AT HIGH SPEEDS.

I TOOK MY CAR IN FOR A ROUTINE OIL CHANGE AND TIRE ROTATION. (WHICH I DO EVERY 5K, THIS WAS AT ABOUT 40K). REAR DRIVER BRAKE PADS WERE DOWN TO 10%, ALL OTHERS WERE FINE. WHEN REPLACING PADS, THE MECHANIC FOUND BRAKE FLUID HAD LEAKED INTO THE CALIPER, CAUSING IT TO FAIL. THE CALIPER FAILURE CAUSED OVERHEATING AND DRAGGING OF THE CERAMIC BRAKE PAD ON THE ROTOR, CUTTING A HUGE GROOVE INTO ROTOR, WHICH NEGATED ANY CHANCE OF MACHINING. WIFE WAS DRIVING HOME FROM WORK WHEN THE VAN JUST SUDDENLY STALLED. SHE WAS TRAVELING AT 35 MPH WHEN SHE LOST ALL POWER. IN THE MORNING THE VEHICLE BATTERY HAD BEEN DRAINED AND WE HAD IT TOWED TO THE DEALER. THEY REPLACED THE ALTERNATOR. WE PICKED IT UP AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. THEY SAID IT WAS THE MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR AND REPLACED IT. TWO WEEKS WENT BY AND ONE DAY THE VEHICLE WOULDN'T START. WE HAD IT TOWED TO THE DEALER AND THEY SAID IT WAS THE MASS AIR FLOW CONNECTOR AND REPLACED IT. THE NEXT DAY THE VEHICLE WOULDN'T START. WE HAD IT TOWED TO THE DEALER AND THEY SAID NOTHING WAS WRONG. THE ENGINE ALWAYS IDLES VERY ROUGH AND NO ONE CAN CORRECT IT. IT HAS STALLED IN TRAFFIC. I HAVE DONE RESEARCH AND HAVE BEEN MADE AWARE OF A PROBLEM WITH THE PCM MODULE ON THESE VEHICLES. APPARENTLY RAIN GETS IT AND SOAKS THE MODULE CAUSING ALL SORTS OF ELECTRICAL AND TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS. I WAS DRIVING ON A CITY STREET WHEN MY ENGINE LIGHT BEGAN FLASHING/BLINKING. I WAS HAVING TROUBLE WITH VAN MAKING WEIRD SOUNDS AND VIBRATIONS. I IMMEDIATELY PULLED OVER. JUST HAD TRANNY RECALL WORK DONE, SAME LIGHT ON. I CALLED FORD-THEY SAID IT WAS A MISS AND I SHOULD BRING IT IN. I WAS TOO AFRAID TO DRIVE THAT FAR, AND I HAVE NO $ FOR A TOW OR FIX. THE CAR LOST POWER AS I WAS TRYING TO DRIVE IT. IT TOOK SEVERAL SECONDS TO GO FROM 0 TO 20MPH. THIS IS EVERY DAY. ONCE IT GETS TO 20MPH THE CAR DRIVES NORMALLY. ALSO SOMETIMES THE CAR WONT MOVE WHEN PUT IN DRIVE OR REVERSE. I HAVE TO PUT IT BACK IN PARK, AND THEN IN DRIVE OR REVERSE FOR IT TO MOVE. ALSO, WHEN I STOP AT A STOP SIGN OR A RED LIGHT, THE CAR DRIVES VERY SLOW UNTIL IT REACHES 20MPH. MY CAR IS ON RECALL BUT I WAS TOLD BY FORD THAT THE PART IS NOT YET IN STOCK. I HAVE BEEN WAITING AND HAVING PROBLEMS AND SPENDING MONEY ON THIS CAR SINCE I PURCHASED IT. I'VE BEEN WAITING MORE THAN 8 MONTHS FOR THE PART FROM FORD. THEY SAY THE CAR IS NOT DANGEROUS TO DRIVE. RECALL ISSUED FOR SAME EXACT VAN BUILT AT OTHER PLANT BUT DOES NOT COVER MY VAN. I DON'T UNDERSTAND THIS AS FORD SAYS THAT THEY USE THE SAME PARTS AT ALL LOCATIONS. WAS DRIVING VEHICLE AND LOST ALL POWER (BREAKS, STEERING ECT.). HAVE ALMOST WRECKED MULTIPLE TIMES DUE TO THIS ISSUE. I AM NOT SURE WHERE THE PROBLEM LIES BUT WE SUSPECT IT MAY BE ELECTRICAL. WE HAVE HAD THE FUEL PUMP, FUEL FILTER REPLACED, AND THE PCM CLEANED AND DRIED OUT BUT THE VAN IS STILL MAKING A SQUEALING NOISE AND DIES WITHOUT NOTICE, MOST OFTEN IN THE MIDDLE OF A TURN OR AT A STOP LIGHT OR SIGN. THE SQUEALING STARTS WHEN YOU TURN THE VAN ON, THEN WILL STOP AND START AGAIN RANDOMLY. USUALLY SOON AFTER IT WILL JUST DIE. SO FAR IT HAS ALWAYS RESTARTED BUT IT SEEMS TO BE GETTING WORSE. WE ARE AFRAID TO DRIVE IT VERY FAR FOR FEAR IT WILL DIE IN TRAFFIC OR IN THE MIDDLE OF AN INTERSECTION WITH ONCOMING TRAFFIC.

OUR 2005 FREESTAR MINIVAN WOULD STALL AND SHUT DOWN THE ENGINE WITH NO WARNING. WE PURCHASED THIS VAN IN 2005 FROM OUR LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP. THE FIRST TIME IT HAPPENED, MY WIFE WAS DRIVING THE VEHICLE AND HAD PULLED INTO AN INTERSECTION WHEN IT STALLED, SHE WAS FORTUNATE THAT SHE WAS NOT INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT. THE VAN WOULD NOT STAY RUNNING WHEN YOU PUT INTO GEAR AND HAD NO REVERSE GEAR. WE TOOK IT TO A LOCAL GARAGE AND FOUND OUT THE PCM HAD GOTTEN WET AND THAT THERE WAS A TSB ISSUED FOR THIS VEHICLE AS IT WAS A COMMON OCCURRENCE IN THIS MODEL. THE MECHANIC DRIED OUT THE PCM, RE-SEALED THE AREA PER THE TSB AND WE WERE BACK ON THE ROAD. THIS WAS IN AUGUST 2010 SO THE VAN WAS ONLY 5 YEARS OLD. FOUR MONTHS LATER IT HAPPENED AGAIN THAT THE VAN SHUT DOWN FOR THE SAME REASON. THE GARAGE RE-DID THE WORK AND VERIFIED THE AREA WAS SEALED OFF. FIVE MONTHS LATER, IT HAPPENED AGAIN SO WATER HAS OBVIOUSLY BEEN ABLE TO GET BACK IN THERE. WE TOOK IT BACK TO OUR LOCAL FORD MECHANIC AND THEY RE-SEALED THE AREA AFTER DRYING OUT THE PCM, AND 3 MONTHS LATER WE WERE IN THE SAME SITUATION. WE HAVE NOW REPLACED THE PCM WITH A NEW ONE, BUT I HAVE NO FAITH THAT THE WATER PROBLEM IS GONE. EACH TIME THE PCM FAILS, THE VAN WILL SHUT DOWN LEAVING YOU WITHOUT POWER STEERING AND BRAKES. EACH TIME WE HAVE GOTTEN LUCKY THAT THERE WAS NO ACCIDENT AND THAT WE WERE WITHIN OUR HOMETOWN SO WE COULD HAVE THE VAN TOWED TO THE GARAGE. THIS IS A FAMILY VAN THAT AT ANY TIME ONE OF OUR CHILDREN COULD BE DRIVING WHEN THIS PROBLEM OCCURS, AND WITH THEM NOT HAVING AS MUCH DRIVING EXPERIENCE AS MY WIFE AND MYSELF, THE POTENTIAL FOR AN ACCIDENT IS GREATLY INCREASED. WE HAVE BEEN VERY FORTUNATE NOT TO HAVE BEEN IN ANY ACCIDENTS SO FAR, ONLY THE EXPENSES, BUT I DON'T WANT TO KEEP SAYING "I'M GLAD WE WEREN'T PULLING OUT INTO TRAFFIC WHEN THAT HAPPENED." IT IS VERY POSSIBLE THAT IT COULD HAPPEN THE NEXT TIME.

I HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH MY FORD FREE STAR 2005 VAN IT HAS 50,600 MILES ON IT. IT ALL STARTED WHEN THE SPEEDOMETER AND ODOMETER STOPPED WORKING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. THEN A FEW SECONDS LATTER THE VAN JUST DIED WHILE DRIVING WITH MY TWO YEAR OLD TWINS IN THE CAR. I WAS ABLE TO START IT UP AGAIN AND IT STARTED TO SPUTTER AND STALL AGAIN. I AM A MECHANIC AND I WAS GOING TO ATTEMPT TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE MYSELF UNTIL I WENT ON LINE AND FOUND OUT THAT OTHER PEOPLE HAVE BEEN COMPLAINING ABOUT THE PCM GETTING WET AND I FOUND OUT MINE WAS WET AND CORRODED. THE PCM WAS GETTING WET BY WATER GETTING THROUGH THE CROWL GASKET. I ALSO FOUND OUT THAT THERE WAS A TSB OUT ON THIS DIRECTING DEALERS HOW TO REPAIR THIS PROBLEM AT COST TO THE CUSTOMER. THE PCM WAS REPLACED NOW THE VEHICLE SHIFTS FUNNY AND GOES IN AND OUT OF GEAR AND I WAS TOLD I HAVE TRANSMISSION DAMAGE NOW. I CALLED FORD CUSTOMER SERVICE AND THEY BASICALLY TOLD ME OH WELL, NOT OUR PROBLEM. BUT HOW IS THIS MY PROBLEM FOR A VEHICLE I DID NOT DESIGN. WATER SHOULD NOT BE ABLE TO GET TO THE PCM. I BOUGHT MY 2005 FORD FREESTAR IN 2005. ALMOST IMMEDIATELY AFTER BUYING IT WE HAD INSTANCES OF THE POWER LOCKS NOT WORKING. THE DRIVER DOOR WILL UNLOCK BUT THE REST WILL NOT. WE HAVE EVEN HAD TO CLIMB IN THROUGH THE DRIVER DOOR TO UNLOCK THE BACK DOORS BY HAND THEN TRY TO GET GROCERIES OUT OF THE WAY BACK THROUGH THE MIDDLE DOORS. THIS IS ALSO A HUGE SAFETY CONCERN FOR ME. THIS VAN HAS A BAD COMPUTER BOARD (PCM) DUE TO RAINWATER THAT IS ALLOWED TO FUNNEL UNDER THE HOOD DUE TO POOR DESIGN OF THE HOOD. IT IS ALSO POSSIBLE THAT THE TRANSMISSION IS BEING AFFECTED BY THIS AS WELL. THE VEHICLE JUST STOPPED SHIFTING INTO GEAR, FOLLOWED BY ALL SORTS OF ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS. THE MECHANIC SAID THE PCM WAS FULL OF WATER AND WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THERE ARE NUMEROUS MESSAGE BOARDS ON THE INTERNET DISCUSSING THIS EXACT SAME PROBLEM WITH FORD FREESTARS RANGING FROM 2004-2007 MODEL YEARS. FORD NEEDS TO ISSUE A RECALL ON THESE VANS AS THIS CAUSES THE ENGINE TO STALL AND THIS COULD HAPPEN AT ANY TIME - IN THE MIDDLE OF A BUSY INTERSECTION, ON THE HIGHWAY, ETC. The rear wheel well has rusted on both sides and completely rusted out a large hole (approx. 1 ft diameter area visibly effected) in the the body of the van. The rusted out section is where the back seat is anchored to the frame, so the rust has cause the seat to no longer be securely anchored to the car. The hole has also caused electrical wires to get wet when water gets into the van and intermittently and unpredictably causing failure of electrical features, including headlights and blinkers, while driving.

ON CHRISTMAS EVE 2014 I GOT INTO MY RECENTLY PURCHASED 2005 FORD FREESTAR MINIVAN TO RUN A SHORT ERRAND. AFTER STARTING MY FREESTAR I PUT IT IN REVERSE BUT THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT MOVE. I TRIED ALL THE FORWARD GEARS WITH THE SAME RESULT, THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT MOVE. THE ENGINE RPM'S WOULD GO UP BUT NO MOVEMENT. I TURNED THE VEHICLE ENGINE OFF AND ON SEVERAL TIME WITH THE SAME RESULTS EACH TIME. I HAD TO WAIT TILL THE DAY AFTER CHRISTMAS TO CONTACT MY LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP SERVICE DEPARTMENT AND DESCRIBE MY PROBLEM. THEY LOOKED UP MY VIN NUMBER AND SAID THAT ALL RECALLS ON MY VEHICLE HAD BEEN DONE INCLUDING THE TORQUE CONVERTER RECALL. I THEN HAD MY FREESTAR TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP TO INVESTIGATE THE PROBLEM. UPON INVESTIGATION IT WAS DETERMINED THAT WATER HAD GOTTEN INTO MY POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE, AND THAT IS WHAT WAS CAUSING THE PROBLEM. THEY REMOVED THE MODULE AND DRIED IT AND THE CONNECTOR OUT THEN REINSTALLED IT AND SEALED IT. AFTER REINSTALLING THE MODULE THEY THEN STARTED THE VEHICLE AND WERE ABLE TO SHIFT THE VEHICLE INTO ALL THE GEARS AND GET THE TRANSMISSION TO FULLY FUNCTION, BUT NOW THERE WAS A SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT ON. THE VEHICLE NOW WOULD NOT IDLE PROPERLY AND HAD A HESITATION WHEN TRYING TO ACCELERATE. IT WAS DETERMINED AFTER FURTHER CHECKS THAT THERE WERE FUEL CODES COMING UP AND THAT THEY WERE RELATED TO THE PCM GETTING WET. IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (WHICH FORD NO LONGER MANUFACTURES) WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. TO FIX THE PROBLEM IT WOULD BE A COST OF $1000.00 FOR A RE-MANUFACTURED MODULE AND REPROGRAMMING IN ADDITION TO THE $650.00 THAT HAD ALREADY BEEN INCURRED FOR THE WORK THAT HAD BEEN DONE SO FAR. THE SITUATION IS VERY DANGER, THE PROBLEM WITH THE PCM ISSUES, THAT SHARE BAD INFORMATION WITH ANY OTHER COMPONENT IN USE, ENGINE, TRANSMISSION, LIGHTS, AC SYSTEM, LOW BATTERY OR NOT TURN ON EVEN WITH NEW BATTERY, AND THE WIRES AND CONNECTORS CLEAN. THE MOST DANGEROUS IS JUST STOP RUNNING IN MIDDLE OF TRAFFIC, OR SOME MECHANIC DID NOT HAVE IDEA ABOUT THE PROBLEM, EVEN THE SARASOTA FORD MECHANICS. WHILE MERGING ONTO ROUTE 50 OFF 628 THE CAR DIED. I DRIFTED ONTO SIDE OF ROAD, BUT IN PARK AND RESTARTED IT. TOOK EXIT OFF 50 AT 450 AND CAR STOPPED AGAIN. PUT IN PARK AT RED LIGHT, STARTED UP AGAIN AND DROVE DOWN RIVA ROAD. CAR STOPPED 4 MORE TIMES BEFORE GETTING TO MY RESIDENCE, EACH TIME ENGINE STOPPING, NO POWER STEERING AND NO BRAKES. CALLED KOONS FORD ANNAPOLIS AND HAD THE CAR TOWED THERE THE NEXT DAY (SINCE THE INCIDENT OCCURRED ON A SUNDAY). THEY KEPT THE CAR FOR 1 WEEK AND COULD NOT CONFIRM OR DUPLICATE ANY OF THE CONDITIONS. THE CAR WOULD START THEN STALL. I WOULD BE DRIVING AND IT WOULD JUST SLOW DOWN LIKE NO GAS GETTING INTO ENGINE AND STALL OUT . I TOOK IT TO FORD DEALER (CREST FORD CENTERLINE MICHIGAN) THEY RAN IT ON A SCOPE. TOLD ME I NEEDED TURBINE SHAFT SPEED SENSOR. THEY REPLACED IT AND CALLED TO SAY MY VEHICLE WAS FINE AND READY TO GO. I PICKED UP CAR ON MONDAY EVENING AND ON WEDNESDAY CAR HAD TO BE TOWED BACK TO THE DEALER. CAR WOULD START BUT WOULD NOT DRIVE. FORD COULD NOT FIND PROBLEM AND FINALLY I CALLED A FRIEND TO ASK FOR A SOLUTION. BECAUSE OF ALL THE ISSUES WITH THE PCM AND HIS EXPERTISE I CALLED MY FORD ADVISOR [XXX] AND TOLD HIM TO CHECK THE PCM FOR WATER DAMAGE. HE CALLED ME BACK SHORTLY AND SAID THEY FOUND THE WATER DAMAGE. THIS IS A VAN MADE VERY WRONG WITH A DESIGN SO THAT YOUR WINDSHIELD LETS WATER FLOW ONTO THE COWL AND THEN DAMAGES THE BRAIN FOR THE CAR. I NOW HAVE TO PAY 1000.00 TO FIX A MISTAKE FORD MOTOR CREATED. THIS IS A PROBLEM FOR EVERYONE WHO OWNS THIS VEHICLE. I HOPE FORD FIXES IT ON A RECALL BEFORE SOMEONE DIES. DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD IN HEAVY TRAFFIC, WITHOUT WARNING SUDDENLY HAD NO POWER, AT 40MPH, PUT IT IN NEUTRAL AND RESTARTED ONLY TO DIE AGAIN 3 MORE TIMES. I THOUGHT I WAS OUT OF GAS BUT THE GAGE SAID 1/8TH OF A TANK. PULLED OFF THE ROAD AND HAD FRIENDS BRING GAS. STARTED UP FINE AND DROVE MAYBE A BLOCK WHEN IT STARTED SPUTTERING AND BUCKING. THE CHECK ENGINE IDIOT LIGHT CAME ON SO I PULLED OVER AGAIN. I RESET THE BATTERY CONNECTION AND LIGHT WENT OFF. I PULLED OFF TO DRIVE AROUND IN THE PARKING LOT AND IT DIED WHEN I CRANKED THE WHEEL TURNING EVERY CORNER. STARTED AGAIN, THIS TIME IT WAS HARD TO TURN OVER, AND IT SPUTTERED AND THE TRANSAXLE IDIOT LIGHT STARTED FLASHING, THE RADIO CAME ON BY ITSELF AND THE EVE PLAYER EJECTED. INTERIOR LIGHTS WERE ON BUT SWITCH WAS TURNED OFF. CHECKED THE TRANNY FLUID, IT LOOKED A LITTLE LOW IN THE DARK(MIDNIGHT) SO PUT IN HALF A QUART. LIGHT WENT OUT BUT THE VAN REFUSED TO GO FORWARD. I DROPPED IT MANUALLY INTO 1ST AND IT SLOWLY MOVED. PARKED IT AND TRIED OTHER GEARS, ALL UNRESPONSIVE BUT WHEN SHIFTING INTO NEUTRAL THE ENGINE JUMPED AND THE RPMS REVVED UP TO 3000!! AFRAID IT WOULD JUMP INTO GEAR AND RUN OVER MY FRIEND, I CUT OFF THE IGNITION WHILE IN NEUTRAL. I WAITED UNTIL MIDNIGHT FOR NO TRAFFIC, THEN DROVE THE VAN HOME, KEEPING THE EMERGENCY FLASHERS ON. WAS ABLE TO TRAVEL ABOUT 25 FEET PER RESTART, EACH TIME THE VAN WOULD DIE WHEN SPEED EXCEEDED 15MPH OR 2000RPMS. TOOK AN HOUR TO GET THE 1.5 MILES HOME. THIS VAN HAD JUST GOTTEN A FULL SERVICE OIL CHANGE/LUBE/FILTER SERVICE AND I HAD THE TRANSMISSION SERVICED AT SEARS UPON PURCHASING IT JUST 6 MONTHS AGO AND HAD NO OTHER ISSUES AT ALL. UPON RESEARCHING, THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE THAT FORD PUBLISHED BUT REFUSES TO FIX/RECALL. THIS INFORMATION IS A COLLECTION OF INCIDENTS THAT ULTIMATELY FIT TOGETHER. I HAVE NOTICE THAT THE FLOOR BOARD OF MY VAN WAS WET. SINCE I HAVE 3 KIDS I JUST SHRUGGED IT OFF. THIS PAST WEEK I NOTICE THE FLOOR MATS WEREN'T WET ONLY THE CARPET BENEATH IT WAS SOAKED. MY KIDS DON'T SPILL JUST UNDER THE MATS. THE WATER MUST BE ENTERING FROM THE OUTSIDE IN. THE VAN WAS ACTING WEIRD ON AND OFF -NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT UNTIL IT STARTED HAPPEN MORE FREQUENTLY. JUNE 2012, I GOT THE P1340 CODE THAT THE CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR HAD GONE BAD, I REPLACED IT, WENT OUT AGAIN, I WAS TOLD IT COULD HAVE BEEN A FAULTY PART, CHANGED IT AGAIN, WENT OUT AGAIN, DECIDED THIS IS BEYOND ME. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY "FIXED" THE CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR AND ANOTHER PART THAT WAS CAUSING THE CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR NOT TO WORK. ($900) IT BROKE AGAIN BECAUSE THE PART THEY PUT IN WAS DEFECTIVE. THEY REPLACED THE DEFECTIVE PART AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME BACK ON AGAIN. AFTER THEY HAD THE CAR FOR 2 WEEKS THEY FOUND ANOTHER SMALL PROBLEM. ($130) I INSISTED AT THE TIME THAT THEY DIDN'T MAKE THE PROPER REPAIRS. THEY ASSURED ME THAT IT ALL STILL NEEDED TO BE DONE. (CAUGHT SOME DOUBLE TALK) I EXPERIENCED A FEW MORE ISSUES WITH THE VAN LOSING POWER. (JULY,SEPTEMBER, OCTOBER -CHECK ENGINE LIGHT DID NOT TURN ON.) I:N DECEMBER THE CAR TURNED OFF AND I WAS ONLY ABLE TO GET ABOUT 25FT PER RESTART AND THE LIGHT CAME ON. I'VE NOTICED OTHER FEATURES NOT WORKING PROPERLY OR WORKING INTERMITTENTLY. THE ENGINE COVERING CLIPS FAILED TO SUSTAIN AND THE WATER PENETRATE THE POWER CONTROL MODULE, CAUSING THE ENGINE TO STALL. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. WAS ON A VERY BUSY HIGHWAY. THE FREESTARS DASH LIGHTS LITE UP AND WENT BACK OFF. AC CUT OFF THEN EVERYTHING STARTED WORKING AGAIN. ABOUT 30 SECONDS LATER THE FREESTAR DIED AT 65. I WAS ABLE TO COAST TO A STOP ON THE SHOULDER. AGAIN ON MAY 5 2012 THE LIGHTS STARTED FLICKERING AND THE AC STARTED TO BLOW HARD AND IT WOULD SLOW BACK DOWN THEN THE DASH LIGHTS ABS,BRAKE,BATTERY LIGHTS WOULD BLINK ON AND OFF THEN THE FREESTAR DIED AGAIN AT 70 MPH. I JUST RECEIVED A SAFETY RECALL NOTICE 11S25 / NHTSA RECALL 12V-006 EVERYTIME I DRIVE MY VAN IT DOES NOT SEEM TO WANT TO ACCELERATE OR MAINTAIN SPEED. I HAVE TAKEN IT TO THE MECHANIC AND I WAS TOLD THAT I NEEDED TO HAVE A NEW EGR VALVE PUT ON, SO I DID. THAT DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM AND I WAS TOLD NEW SPARK PLUGS AND WIRES SO I HAD THEM REPLACE, THAT DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. THEN I WAS TOLD THAT I MAY NEED A NEW FUEL FILTER, SO I HAD IT REPLACED AND ONCE AGAIN THAT DID NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM. THIS IS THE ONLY VEHICLE I HAVE AND I AM A SINGLE MOM TO TWO YOUNG CHILDREN. I AM WORRIED THAT WHILE I AM DRIVING I WILL LOSE ALL POWER AND WILL BE HIT BY ANOTHER VEHICLE. MY VAN NEVER WANTS TO GO OVER 40 MPH AND ONCE IT DOES REACH THAT SPEED IT WILL NOT MAINTAIN AND SOMETIMES MAKES AN ODD NOISE. ON SEPTEMBER 21, 2011 I NOTICED THAT MY 2005 FORD FREESTAR WAS HESITATING WHEN I PULLED OUT OF A PARKING SPOT IN FRONT OF MY HOME. I WAS ABLE TO GET TO MY FINAL DESTINATION, A LOCAL SUPERMARKET, WITHOUT INCIDENT BUT COULD TELL THAT THE CAR WAS NOT SHIFTING GEARS AS SMOOTHLY AS I WAS ACCUSTOMED TO. ON THE RETURN TRIP HOME, UPON MERGING ONTO THE EXPRESSWAY I TYPICALLY TAKE, MY FREESTAR'S ENGINE BEGAN TO SPUTTER THEN IMMEDIATELY SHUT DOWN. ALL POWER TO THE ENGINE WAS LOST. POWER STEERING WAS LOST AS WELL MAKING THE CAR IMPOSSIBLE TO MANEUVER. THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN AND I WAS FORCED TO COME TO A COMPLETE STOP, SHIFT INTO PARK AND REENGAGE THE IGNITION. FROM THAT POINT ON, UNTIL I ARRIVED HOME, THE FREESTAR WOULD NOT SHIFT BEYOND SECOND GEAR. IF I MADE AN ATTEMPT TO ACCELERATE, AGAIN THE ENGINE WOULD SPUTTER AND ALL POWER TO THE ENGINE, POWER STEERING AND ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS WOULD SHUT DOWN COMPLETELY. I MANAGED TO GET HOME THAT DAY BY STOPPING AND RESTARTING MY FREESTAR WHAT I CAN ONLY ESTIMATE TO BE 50 TO 75 TIMES. THE MOST HARROWING PART OF THIS EXPERIENCE WAS THE LOST OF POWER AND CONTROL WITHOUT WARNING. I HAD TAKEN MY 2005 FORD FREESTAR VAN TO BE CHECKED FOR A PROBLEM WITH THE TRANSMISSION BECAUSE IT WASN'T SHIFTING PROPERLY. THEN LATER I HAD TAKEN IT TO A FORD DEALER FOR THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT TO BE DIAGNOSED - THEY CLAIMED THAT IT COULDN'T BE DIAGNOSED BECAUSE IT DIDN'T WRITE THE CODE PROPERLY. TRANSMISSION STILL NOT SHIFTING PROPERLY. A MONTH LATER THE TRANSAXLE LIGHT CAME ON, THE ENGINE WASN'T RUNNING PROPERLY AND IN THE RAIN THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WOULD BLINK ON AND OFF. I TOOK IT TO A TRANSMISSION SPECIALIST WHO ACTUALLY TOOK THE TIME WITH THE VAN TO DIAGNOSE IT. HE HAD TO LET THE ENGINE WARM UP LONG ENOUGH FOR THE LIGHTS TO START COMING ON. THEN HE DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM TO BE THE 2ND GEAR IN THE TRANSMISSION. ONCE THE TRANSMISSION WAS REMOVED HE SAID THAT IT COULDN'T BE FIXED SO I HAD TO INSTALL A NEW TRANSMISSION - $2700 LATER AND HAD TO BORROW A VEHICLE FROM FAMILY TO GO ON VACATION. I ALSO HAD TO REPLACE THE AIR COMPRESSOR FOR THE AIR CONDITIONER - $500 LATER BUT NOW IT SEEMS TO BE GIVING ME PROBLEMS AGAIN. I HAVE HAD NUMEROUS ISSUES WITH THE TIRES - THEY DON'T HOLD AIR BECAUSE OF THE RIMS THAT DON'T ALLOW THEM TO PROPERLY SEAL. PER FORD SERVICE: WATER IN PCM 5/03/11 SIMILAR PROBLEM 7/15/10 ALTHOUGH AT THE TIME FORD SERVICE WAS UNABLE TO FIND THE CAUSE. AT ABOUT 20 MILES PER HOUR WHILE MAKING A RIGHT HAND TURN THE ENGINE STALLED, THE POWER STEERING AND POWER BRAKES FAILED CAUSING ME TO TEMPORARILY LOSE CONTROL AND SWERVE INTO THE ON-COMING LANE. UPON RESEARCHING THIS ISSUE ON THE INTERNET WE HAVE COME TO REALIZATION THAT THIS IS A VERY PROLIFIC PROBLEM WITH THIS MAKE AND MODEL OF VAN. JUST FOR THEM TO GET THE PART IS GOING TO TAKE A MONTH. THAT SHOWS YOU JUST HOW PROLIFIC IT IS. FORD IS NOT TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS FAULTY COWLING THAT LEAKS DIRECTLY ON TO THE PCM EVEN THOUGH TENS OF THOUSANDS OR MORE PEOPLE ARE HAVING TO HAVE THIS PART REPLACED MULTIPLE TIMES COSTING THEM THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS OUT OF THEIR OWN POCKETS. I WAS DRIVING MY 2005 FORD FREESTAR SE W/3.9L V6 ENGINE ON MI HWY M-29 JUST NORTH OF ALGONAC, MICHIGAN. I WAS DRIVING ABOUT 45 MPH, AND AT ONE POINT, I WAS PRESSING THE ACCELERATOR AND THE VAN WAS SLOWING DOWN. I COASTED OVER TO THE SHOULDER AND STOPPED MY FREESTAR SAFELY, WITHOUT ANY DAMAGE TO PROPERTY. I TRIED SHIFTING INTO REVERSE, BUT NO ENGAGEMENT OF THE TRANSMISSION TOOK PLACE. THERE WAS ALSO NO ENGAGEMENT IN FORWARD GEARS 1 OR 3. I WAS "FOUND OFF ROAD DEAD". :-) I HAD VAN TOWED HOME TO SAINT CLAIR SHORES (37 MILES) AT A COST OF $50 TO ALLSTATE ROAD SERVICE AND $116.25 OUT-OF-MY-POCKET. I HAD MY VAN TOWED AGAIN (COVERED UNDER ALLSTATE'S $50 LIMIT) TO MY SELLING DEALER, ROY O'BRIEN FORD, ALSO IN SAINT CLAIR SHORES. I WAS INFORMED LATE THE NEXT DAY THAT TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM WOULD COST $850. THEN THE TECH GAVE MORE INFO TO MY SERVICE WRITER THAT HE THOUGHT THE TORQUE CONVERTER SPLINES WERE STRIPPED. REVISED ESTIMATE WAS $1525 TO REMOVE THE TRANSMISSION, PULL THE TORQUE CONVERTER AND REPLACE SAME AND REINSTALL THE TRANSMISSION. THE TRANSMISSION PAN WAS "DROPPED' FOR EXAMINATION, SCREEN AND GASKET CHANGE, AND NEW TRANS FLUID WAS ADDED TO FILL THE SYSTEM AGAIN. ACTUAL OUTLAY TODAY WAS $1524.72. I HAD NO WARNING THAT I WAS ABOUT TO LOSE POWER TO THE WHEELS. I'M GLAD I WAS ON A QUIET SEMI-RURAL ROAD WITH HOMES AROUND. ONE HOMEOWNER CHECKED ON MY WIFE AND I TO SEE IF WE WERE OK. HE EVEN OFFERED TO LET ME USE HIS LAVATORY. AT LEAST THERE IS SOME KINDNESS LEFT. TWICE OUR 2005 FORD FREESTAR EXPERIENCED WATER LEAKAGE THROUGH THE COWL GRILL ON THE HOOD. AFTER HEAVY RAIN IN MARCH 2008, THE FIRST OF SEVERAL BREAKDOWNS AND FIX ATTEMPTS OCCURRED, RESULTING IN 3 MONTHS OUT OF SERVICE, AND REPLACEMENTS OF THE WIRING HARNESS, THE PCM COMPUTER, SEVERAL OTHER COMPUTERS AND SENSORS, AND THE ENTIRE TRANSMISSION, EQUALING NEARLY $5,000 IN TOW, RENTAL CAR, AND REPAIR BILLS--SOME OF WHICH THE DEALERSHIP TALKED MY INSURANCE TO PAY FOR AS A "WATER DAMAGE CLAIM." IN BETWEEN, WE'VE HAD MULTIPLE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEMS AND BREAKDOWNS, AND THEN THIS PAST MARCH 2009, ALSO DURING HEAVY RAIN, THE CAR EXPERIENCED THE WATER DAMAGE BREAKDOWN. THIS TIME THE WATER ONLY RUINED THE PCM COMPUTER, BUT THE DEALERSHIP REFUSED TO HONOR THE REPAIRS THAT WERE LESS THAN 12 MONTHS OLD AND WE TOOK IT TO A PRIVATE LICENSED REPAIR TECHNICIAN. HE FOUND THE TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN ONLINE THAT DESCRIBED THE KNOWN WATER LEAKAGE PROBLEM IN SOME 2005 FREESTAR MODELS AND DID THE RECOMMENDED FIX TWICE. IN HIS OPINION AND IN THE GEICO INSURANCE ADJUSTERS OPINION, THIS IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM THAT FORD NEEDS TO ADDRESS. THIS TIME WE HAD NO COVERAGE FOR THE DAMAGE AND WERE OUT OF A VEHICLE FOR TWO MONTHS AND OUT OF POCKET OVER $3,000. I'VE BEGGED FORD'S CORPORATE OFFICES TO TAKE THE VEHICLE BACK AND JUST LET ME OUT OF THE FINANCING BUT THEY REFUSE DUE TO THE NUMBER OF MILES. ALSO, THE ATTORNEY GENERAL'S LEMON LAW OFFICE SAID THERE WERE TOO MANY MILES. I HAVE HAD RECURRING PROBLEMS WITH MY AUTOMATIC REAR DOORS. THE DOOR ON THE DRIVER SIDE DOES NOT ALWAYS CLOSE PROPERLY AND WHEN I BACK UP THE DOOR AJAR LIGHT COMES ON. THE PASSENGER REAR DOOR DOES NOT OPEN WITH THE OVERHEAD BUTTON ALL THE TIME, IT DOES NOT SEEM TO UNLOCK. I HAVE HAD IT IN THE SHOP SEVERAL TIMES (AT LEAST 6 OR MORE) AND MOST OF THE TIME THEY SAY THEY CAN'T DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM EVEN THOUGH THEY HAVE SEEN THE DOOR NOT CLOSE PROPERLY BEFORE. THEY ORDERED PARTS AND SAID IT WAS "FIXED" BUT I'M STILL HAVING THE PROBLEM AND AGAIN THEY SAY THEY CAN NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE STOPPED AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT, ANOTHER VEHICLE REAR ENDED THE CONTACT AT AN ESTIMATED SPEED OF 40-45MPH. THIS RESULTED IN THE CONTACT REAR ENDING A VEHICLE. THERE WERE THREE OCCUPANTS IN THE CONTACT'S VEHICLE, THE DRIVER; THE CONTACT WHO WAS SEATED IN THE PASSENGER SEAT, AND AN OCCUPANT IN THE REAR SEAT ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE. THE ELECTRIC SLIDING DOOR WILL OPEN ABOUT A FOOT, AND IT WILL STICK. THE BRAKES ARE LIKE SPONGES. CONSUMER STATES HE HAS TO COMPLETELY DEPRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL TO THE FLOOR BEFORE THE VEHICLE WILL STOP. CONSUMER CONTACTED FORD THREE TIMES FOR THESE ISSUES. *AK

CONSUMER IS CONCERNED THE VEHICLE WILL CATCH ON FIRE. *AK WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS STOPPED AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT THE CONSUMER NOTICED A SMELL OF FUEL. THE CONSUMER FOUND A LEAK COMING FROM THE FUEL TANK ONTO THE EXHAUST PIPE THEN TO THE GROUND IN LARGE AMOUNTS. *TC
