The contact stated he notice that tread separation from the rear passenger side tire. On another occasion the contact had a blowout on the front driver side where the tread separation. The front driver side tire was replaced with a used tired and the rear tire was not replaced. The manufacturer was not contact. The failure mileage 5,000 and 24,449.

I WAS DRIVING ON HWY. 40 GOING 68 MILES PER HOUR WHEN THE RIGHT FRONT TIRE JUST POPPED OFF. I GOT CONTROL OF THE TRUCK AND MADE IT TO THE SIDE OF THE HWY. BECAUSE THERE WERE CARS ALL AROUND ME WHEN THE INCIDENT OCCURED I COULD NOT GET OFF THE ROAD QUICKLY ENOUGH AND THUS SO CAUSING THE ENTIRE RIM TO BE DESTROYED. THE TIRE CAME OFF IN ONE BIG RING AND FLEW INTO THE HIGHWAY CAUSING TRAFFIC TO HAVE TO GO AROUND IT AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED. I HAD TO DODGE TRAFFIC THAT WAS ALREADY HAVING TO GO AROUND TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD I HAD TO BE ON TO GET THE TIRE OUT OF THE PATH OF ON COMMING CARS. I RETREIVED THE TIRE AND KEPT IT TO INVESTAGATE IF IT WAS A RECALL OR NOT. I HAD AN ACCIDENT ON 5-12-04 WHEN ONE OF THE OTHER TIRES JUST LIKE THAT ONE HAD BLOWN OUT AND CAUSED MY TRUCK TO ROLL AND SKID DOWN THE HWY. ENDING UPSIDE DOWN. I HAD TO GO TO THE EMEGENCY ROOM AND BE CHECKED OUT. I SUSTAINED SCRAPES AND BRUSIES AND BROKEN RIBS. I DIDNT THINK IT WOULD BE THE TIRES SINCE THESE WERE NOT THE TIRES THAT HAD THE RECALL ON THEM. BUT AFTER THE OTHER TIRE BLEW I FIGURED IT NEEDED LOOKING INTO.I HAD TO HAVE MY TRUCK REPAIRED THROUGH MY INSURANCE COMPANY AND PAY THE DEDUCTABLES FOR IT TO BE DONE. I PAID FOR TWO TIRES AND A RIM REPLACEMENT. THE INTERNET SAID THAT THERE WAS A VOLENTARY RECALL ON THE TIRES THAT I HAD AND GAVE ME A NUMBER TO CONTACT THEM ABOUT IT BUT WHEN I CALLED THE LADY SAID IT WAS NOT ONE THAT IS ONE THE LIST. The back end frame has completely rusted out, while the cab frame is in perfect condition. I have read about everyone that has a ranger from 1995-200 has had this issue. My truck only has 127k miles on it and has been kept in wonderful condition, and the bed frame has made it unsafe to drive.

I WAS EAST BOUND DOING 50 MPH WHEN A WEST BOUND CHEVY MADE A LEFT TURN INTO MY LANE, I PUSHED BRAKES TURNED RIGHT IMPACTING THE CHEVY HEAD ON SPINNING IT 180 DEGREES AND BACK INTO THE WEST BOUND LANE. BOTH THE CHEVY'S AIR BAGS DEPLOYED AND IT BROKE IT'S WIND- SHIELD. THE AIR BAGS IN MY TRUCK FAILED TO DEPLOY; I'M THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF THE RANGER. MY TRUCK AS WELL AS THE CHEVY WERE TOTALED; $8,988. TO FIX MY RANGER. MY WIFE SUFFERED A BROKEN LEFT WRIST AND SHE BROKE A TITANIUM ROD IN HER BACK. SHE HAD TO UNDERGO A SIX HOUR SURGERY TO REMOVE THE BROKEN RODS PARTS IN HER LOWER BACK AND THE SURGEON HAD TO ADD MORE RODS IN HER UPPER BACK TO STABILIZE TWO VERTEBRAE , WHICH WERE DAMAGED IN THE CRASH. I SEND FORD THE ACCIDENT REPORT, BODY SHOP ESTIMATE AND 20+ PICTURES OF THE TRUCK AND ACCIDENT SCENE. FORD SAID THE IMPACT WAS NOT ENOUGH TO SET OFF THE AIR BAGS. The contact heard a loud bang and observed through his residence window that the vehicle was on fire that was confined to the engine compartment. The flames eventually spread to the passenger cabin. The fire department was called. The fire was extinguished with chemicals. The fire marshal wrote a report and advised the contact that the fire could be related to a NHTSA Safety Campaign. The contact owns a 2000 Ford Ranger. The contact stated that the gear shifter had to be shifted into neutral to start the vehicle. The gear shifter was not matching with the actual gear that was selected. While the vehicle was in park, the vehicle would roll backward before the park was engaged. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and the shift range bracket and ignition lock cylinder were replaced however, the failure recurred. The dealer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the VIN was not under recall. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to file a complaint with the NHTSA. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 01V062000 (Power Train) however, the VIN was not included. The failure mileage was 91,264.

I HAVE A 2000 FORD RANGER. FOR THE LAST YEAR, I HAVE HAD ISSUES WITH VARIOUS ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS, INCLUDING THE DOOR SENSORS FAILING, INTERIOR LIGHTS NOT WORKING OR NOT BRIGHT ENOUGH, AND ANTI-THEFT LIGHT FLASHING (I DO NOT HAVE AN ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM, JUST A FLASHING RED LIGHT ON THE DASHBOARD). THEN A MONTH AGO, I CAME TO A STOP SIGN, STOPPED, AND TURNED ON THE LEFT TURN SIGNAL. THE TURN SIGNAL LIGHT FLASHED ON AND STAYED ON AND THEN TWO PUFFS OF SMOKE CAME OUT OF THE STEERING COLUMN. I DROVE A MILE TO MY HOME AND SHUT THE TRUCK OFF. THE STEERING COLUMN WAS HOT TO THE TOUCH BUT I DID NOT SEE ANY OTHER EVIDENCE OF A FIRE. AFTER SOME RESEARCH AND DISCOVERING THAT THE FORD EXPLORER HAD A RECALLED MULTI-SWITCH, LOCATED IN THE STEERING COLUMN, I HAD THE MULTI-SWITCH REPLACED IN MY RANGER. THE DOOR SENSORS STILL DON'T WORK (THE DOME LIGHT STAYS ON), BUT ALL THE OTHER ELECTRICAL ISSUES HAVE BEEN RESOLVED AND I HAVE NOT SEEN ANY MORE SMOKE. THIS MONTH'S ISSUE OF CONSUMER REPORTS NOTED A RECALL FOR FORD RANGERS FROM 1995-1997 AND 2001-2003 FOR A FAULTY CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH. MY RANGER DOES NOT HAVE CRUISE CONTROL; HOWEVER, ACCORDING TO MY MECHANIC THIS RECALL INVOLVES THE SAME MULTI-SWITCH. *TR

IN OUR 2000 FORD RANGER, THE DOME LIGHT INTERMITTENTLY REMAINS ON WHEN THE CAR IS OFF. THE LIGHT AND THE "DOOR AJAR" INDICATOR WILL INTERMITTENTLY REMAIN ON WHILE THE CAR IS BEING DRIVEN, CAUSING POTENTIALLY HAZARDOUS NIGHT-DRIVING CONDITIONS. THIS HAS DRAINED THE CAR'S BATTERY, STRANDING THE OWNER. THIS HAS HAPPENED OVER 20 TIMES IN THE MONTH OF DECEMBER AND COUNTLESS TIMES SINCE THIS PROBLEM BEGAN IN THE MONTH OF NOVEMBER. I WAS DRIVING MY TRUCK DOWN A MAIN ROAD AND THERE WAS A SMALL POTHOLE.IT WAS ONLY ABOUT AN INCH DEEP BY ABOUT A FOOT AND ALL OF A SUDDEN MY TRUCK STARTED MAKING VERY LOUD NOISES GOING DOWN THE ROAD AND ALMOST SEEMING LIKE THE TRUCK DIDN'T WANT TO GO STRAIGHT. I PULLED OVER BECAUSE I WANTED TO CHECK IT AND HERE WAS A MASSIVE CRACK IN THE FRAME BEHIND THE SHACKLE MOUNT IN THE FRONT OF THE WHEEL WELL. THIS WAS CAUSED BY THE GAS TANK MOUNT THAT THE STRAP CONNECTS DO HOLDING DIRT AND MOISTURE BEHIND IT AND ROTTED OUT A HOLE IN THE FRAME. ALSO THE GAS TANK MOUNT ROTTED COMPLEATLY OUT AND IS NO LONGER THERE ON THE DRIVERS SIDE THE SAME PLACE THAT THE FRAME ROTTED OUT. THIS IS A BIG DEFECT BY FORD AS THERE IS NO WAY TO CLEAN IT OUT AND THE FRAME WILL JUST ROT EVEN THOUGH THE BODY OF THE TRUCK IS SPOTLESS AND RUST FREE BECAUSE I WASH THE UNDERCARRIAGE EVERY WEEK AS WELL AS THE WHOLE TRUCK. THIS IS EXTREMELY UNSAFE BECAUSE THE MOISTURE AND DIRT CONSISTAINTLY EAT AWAY AT THE FRAME. ALSO IT IS BAD ENOUGH THAT I POSSIBLY NEED TO TAKE THE TRUCK OFF THE ROAD EVEN THOUGH THE REST OF THE TRUCK IS PERFECT. IT IS VERY UNSAFE TO DRIVE AND I CAN'T BELIEVE FORD COULD HAVE OVER LOOKED THIS.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 FORD RANGER. WHILE OPERATING THE VEHICLE, A RATTLING TYPE NOISE WAS PRESENT UNDER THE VEHICLE. UPON INSPECTION, IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE LEAF SPRING SHACKLE CONNECTED TO THE SUBFRAME FAILED DUE TO RUST AND CORROSION. THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. I SEEMED TO GET PROGRESSIVELY WORSE, AND FINALLY I TOOK IT TO A LOCAL MECHANIC TO FIX. HE CHANGED THE RACK AND PINION AND INFORMED ME THAT THE FORD RACK AND PINION HAD A REVISED DESIGN TWICE. FOR THIS REASON I HAD A FORD MOTORCRAFT PART INSTALLED RATHER THAN AN AFTERMARKET PART. HE ALSO INFORMED ME THAT THE VERY NEXT DAY AFTER HE FIXED MY TRUCK, ANOTHER RANGER OF THE SAME YEAR HAD THE SAME PROBLEM BUT WORSE, BECAUSE THE STEERING WAS TOTALLY LOCKED IN PLACE AND WOULDN'T TURN. I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR A RECALL TO COME OUT, BECAUSE THIS OBVIOUSLY A SAFETY ISSUE, BUT NOTHING HAS HAPPENED. SO NOW I FEEL I MUST FILE A COMPLAINT. I WAS FILLING AIR IN THE DRIVER REAR TIRE AND I SAW ROT AND BAD RUST ON THE FRAME BEFORE AND AFTER THE SPRING SHACKLE A CRACK FROM BOTTOM OF THE FRAME TO THE TOP ON BOTH SIDES THE FRAME IS SUPER THIN AND IS NOW NOT DRIVABLE BC IT'S VERY DANGEROUS TO BE DRIVEN IF IT EVER BROKE SOMEONE OR MULTIPLE PEOPLE COULD GET INJURED OR EVEN KILLED LOOKS LIKE IT'S BEEN CRACKED FOR A LONG TIME I'VE OWNED IT 9 MONTHS IT WAS BOUGHT FROM A LOCAL DEALER.

IN ADDITION, WHEN THE SIGNAL FAILS, SMOKE COMES OUT OF THE STEERING COLUMN NEAR THE HAZARD FLASHER SWITCH AND/OR TURN SIGNAL SWITCH. I HAVE ORDERED A REPLACEMENT TURN SIGNAL SWITCH (AND WILL BE REPLACING IT AS SOON AS THE NEW PART ARRIVES) - I WILL KEEP THE OLD PART.

REMOVED SEAT TO SEE THE BOLTS WERE FROM THE RECLINER ASSEMBLY, REMOVED THE THREADED PART FROM THE FRAME, THE THREADS APPEARED TO BE APPROXIMATELY 1/4 INCH, ORDERED BOLTS FROM FORD AND REPLACED THE BOLTS FORD PART NUMBER F87Z-1060108-BB, PRICE APPROXIMATELY $40.00, UPON PICKING UP BOLTS ADVISED NO CHARGE. I HAVE MILD BACK STRAIN FROM THE INITIAL FALL BACKWARD. FORD ISSUED RECALL 03S04S1 IN 2006 FOR THIS SAME PROBLEM IN THE 1998 - 2001 EXPLORER; HOWEVER, FORD STATES RECALL 03S04S1 DOES NOT COVER RANGER EVEN THOUGH THERE IS EVIDENCE THE SAME SEAT DESIGN AND BOLTS ARE USED IN BOTH MODELS. EMERGENCY BRAKE CABLES THAT RUN TOGETHER BY THE REAR END, HAVE RUBBED TOGETHER TO THE POINT OF WARRING THROUGH THE SHEATHING. ON APRIL 8TH 2006 THE FRONT PARKING BRAKE CABLE ON MY 2000 FORD RANGER BROKE DUE TO WEAR FROM A METAL CLIP USED TO HOLD THE CABLE SLEEVE IN PLACE. WHEN I TRIED TO REPLACE THE CABLE I DISCOVERED THAT THE PARKING BRAKE ASSY. WAS MANUFACTURED SO THAT THE PARKING BRAKE/E-BRAKE PEDAL ASSY ALSO HAS TO BE REPLACED, BECAUSE THERE IS NO WAY TO REMOVE THE BROKEN CABLE FROM THE PEDAL ASSY. THE COST OF THE PART IS $85.00 FOR THE PEDAL ASSY. AND $35.00 FOR THE CABLE ASSY. PARTS ARE ONLY AVAILABLE THROUGH THE DEALER ON SPECIAL ORDER ONLY. NO REPAIR HAS BEEN MADE, BUT FRAME LOOKS TO BE WEAKENED AT THIS POINT.. PHOTOS AVAILABLE. OTHER ISSUES DUE TO RUST: SPRING 2013: REPLACED ENGINE OIL PAN - LEAKING OIL DUE TO RUST HOLES. WINTER 2013: BODY REPAIR - MAJOR RUST AND RIGHT SIDE ACCIDENT DAMAGE - MUCH MORE RUST COMING ON TRUCK. AUTUMN 2013: REPLACED 5 FEET RUSTED BRAKE LINE TO REAR BRAKES - LEAKING BRAKE FLUID, NO BRAKES. THERE IS A LOT OF FRAME RUST ON MY TRUCK. ESPECIALLY WHERE THE FRAME CONNECTS TO THE BED. I HAD TO REPLACE BOTH THE REAR SPRING SHACKLE BRACKETS, BOTH BROKE OFF BECAUSE OF RUST. TWICE THERE WAS A HOLE IN THE BRAKE LINE, LUCKILY I SAW THIS WHEN THE CAR WAS PARKED AND NOW WHILE I WAS DRIVING WHICH COULD HAVE BEEN VERY DANGEROUS. I HAVE A 2000 FORD RANGER XLT. THE FRAME, BRAKE LINES, SHACKLES, SHOCKS, AND OTHER COMPONENTS FROM THE MID FRAME TO THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE ARE SHOWING SEVERE SIGNS OF RUST AND ROT. THE REAR BRAKE LINES WERE ROTTED THROUGH AND REQUIRED REPLACEMENT. THE REAR BUMPER HAS ROTTED COMPLETELY OFF THE FRAME ON THE DRIVERS SIDE. THE REAR SHACKLES, SPRING MOUNTS, DIFFERENTIAL COVER AND AXLE ARE SHOWING SEVERE SIGNS OF RUST, AND IN SOME AREAS, COMPLETE ROT THROUGH. THE VEHICLE HAS APPROXIMATELY 71,000 MILES AND IS OTHERWISE IN VERY GOOD CONDITION. AS I RESEARCH THIS PROBLEM, I HAVE FOUND OTHERS WITH THE SAME PROBLEMS. THESE ISSUES REVOLVE AROUND THE SAFETY COMPONENTS OF THE VEHICLE AND IN SHORT TIME, THIS VEHICLE WILL LIKELY BE UNSAFE TO DRIVE. FRONT AND BACK PADS WERE REPLACED BY MY MECHANIC. PROBLEM STILL OCCURRED, ESPECIALLY WHEN GOING DOWN HILL. TOOK IT BACK TO MY MECHANIC AND WAS ADVISED TO TAKE IT TO THE DEALERSHIP SINCE IT WAS NOT THE BRAKE PADS AND WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY. RUDE SERVICE REP AT DEALERSHIP WENT WITH ME FOR A TEST DRIVE, SAID HE COULD NOT VERIFY MY COMPLAINT EVEN THOUGH THE ABS LIGHT WAS ON FOR THE WHOLE RIDE. HE CLAIMED MY MECHANIC HAD SCREWED SOMETHING UP, SAID THE INTERMITTANT BRAKE FAILURE WAS ALL IN MY IMAGINATION, ETC. BUT SINCE IT WAS A SAFETY ISSUE HE WOULD DO FURTHER DIAGNOSTICS. THE ENGINE WAS 'NOT RIGHT' ONE DAY SO THE HOOD WAS OPENED IN THE BANK PARKING LOT AND IT APPEARED TO BE OVERHEATED. THE TEMPERATURE GAGE DID NOT INDICATE THIS BUT THE RADIATOR WAS INDEED WITHOUT WATER. THE RADIATOR WAS FILLED AND LATER CHECKED OUT AT THE SHOP. IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE TEMPERATURE GAGE WAS NOT ACCURATE AND AN EXTERNAL GAGE WAS ADDED (A SEPARATE GAGE NOT PART OF THE DASHBOARD). THE ENGINE WAS NEVER THE SAME AND HAS SINCE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED (WITH A REMANUFACTURED) DUE TO BEING OVERHEATED. THIS WAS PREVENTABLE IF THE TEMPERATURE SENSOR HAD BEEN OPERATING PROPERLY. ON 06/03/2013 AT APPROXIMATELY 0830 HRS, MY SON WAS DRIVING MY 2000 FORD RANGER EXTENDED CAB 4X4, TAKING HIS SISTER TO THE DENTIST OFFICE. WHILE ENROUTE THE RPM GAUGE SPIKED TO 5000 RPM'S SO HE LET OFF THE GAS AND IT WENT BACK TO NORMAL. HE CONTINUED A SHORT DISTANCE TO THE DENTIST OFFICE AND AS HE WAS PULLING INTO THE PARKING LOT, THE VEHICLE LOST ALL POWER AND COASTED TO A STOP. JUST AS THE VEHICLE STOPPED, MY DAUGHTER SAW SMOKE COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD ON THE DRIVER SIDE SO SHE EXITED THE VEHICLE. MY SON EXITED THE VEHICLE AND WENT TO LOOK UNDER THE VEHICLE WHEN HE SAW FIRE DRIPPING DOWN TO THE GROUND. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT RESPONDED TO THE SCENE AND EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE. FIRE ENGULFED THE ENTIRE ENGINE COMPARTMENT AND SPREAD TO INTERIOR OF THE CAB, VEHICLE WAS A TOTAL LOSS. I'VE OWNED THIS VEHICLE SINCE APRIL 2004 AND RECEIVED NUMEROUS LETTERS FROM FORD MOTOR CO. I REMOVED THE SPARE A PLACED IT IN THE BED FOR NOW. THE BED AND ITS MOUNTS ARE SHOT, THE BED CAN BE PICKED UP A GOOD TWO INCHES OFF THE FRAME. I BOUGHT A 2000 FORD RANGER. I HAVE KEPT THE ALL THE UPKEEPS FOR THIS CAR AND MORE ACCORDING TO THE FORD DEALERS INSTRUCTION MANUAL FOR THE FORD RANGER TRUCK. IT HAS ABOUT 81000 MILES ON IT. I RECENTLY HAD TO PAY $2300.00 TO THE KEARNY MESA FORD TO FIX MY CAR. I DO HAVE THE CRUISE CONTROL ON IT. ONE DAY, I SMELLED ANTIFREEZE. MY HEAT GADGET DID NOT GO OFF. THERE WAS NO INDICATION THAT THE TRUCK WAS OVERHEATING, BUT I CHOSE TO BRING IT IN. I THOUGHT IT WAS PROBABLY A LEAK IN A HOSE. IT TURNED OUT THE A HEATING ELEMENT WAS "PROBABLY THE CULPRIT", BUT THEY FOUND THROUGH THEIR COMPUTERS THAT THE ENGINE HAD TO BASICALLY BE REBUILT BECAUSE THE ENGINE HAD OVERHEATED. MY CONCERN WAS THAT NOT ONCE DID MY HEATING GAUGE TELL ME THAT THE TRUCK WAS OVERHEATING. THAT IS DANGEROUS. I DO NOT KNOW IF THIS IS CONNECTED TO THE CRUISE CONTROL PROBLEM, BUT FOR A HEATING GAUGE TO NOT GO OFF WHEN THERE IS SEVER HEAT GOING ON IN THE ENGINE IS DANGEROUS. THIS IS A RED CARPET CONTRACT. BOUGHT THE PICKUP IN OCT.99. STARTED HAVING TROUBLE WITH THE CLUTCH IN JAN.2000, SENT IT IN TO CHECK THE CLUTCH AND THEY SAID NOTHING WRONG. SENT I BACK BECAUSE ENGINE LIGHT STAYED ON AND THE PROBLEM WITH CLUTCH WAS STILL THERE. THEY CHANGED A SENSOR AND AGAIN SAID NOTHING WRONG WITH CLUTCH. I DIDN'T GET IT OUT OF THE LOT BEFORE THE CLUTCH WENT COMPLETELY OUT. THIS TIME THEY REPLACED THE CLUTCH.THEY SAID IT WAS A MANUFACTOR DEFAULT IN NOV.2000 WAS HIT BROADSIDED ON PASSENGER SIDE,BEHIDE DOOR, AND THE WHOLE BACKEND WAS REPLACED. PUT 2 NEW TIARES ON BACK AND EXTENSIVE WORK DONE ON BACKEND. ASSUMED TIRES WERE BALANCED AND FRONT AND BACK ALIGNED. I HAD IT BACK AGAIN JULY 22,2001. BOTH THE BACK SEAT SMALL DOORS WERE LOCKED AND UNOPERABLE SINCE 2015 (THE DEALER REFUSED TO REPAIR WITHOUT PAYING FOR SERVICE- THEY SAID WILL COST $1,000.00 FOR EACH DOOR AND JUST TO EXAM COST. THAT WAS NOT THE REPAIR COST YET) 2020 IN AUGUST, PERHAPS, THE BACK GATE DOOR FOR THE TRUNK SUDDENLY COLLAPSED, FELLED OUT FROM THE ROLLER. THAT WAS THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE BACK GATE TO THE BED OF THE TRUCK I HAD TO PUT BACK TO THE ROLLER. AND, IT IS NOT SURE THAT THE GATE IS STABLE CONDITION. UNDER THE DASHBOARD, THE CIGARETTE LIGHTER JUST TOUCHED AND COLLAPSED-BROKEN INSIDE UNDER THE DASHBOARD AND COULD NOT PULL IT OUT. SO, IT IS STILL INSIDE UNDER THE DASHBOARD (NOTICE: THAT FEATURE-THE CIGARETTE LIGHTER NOBODY USED SINCE BOUGHT THE VEHICLE- NON SMOKER OWNER). NOT REALLY AN INCIDENT, MORE OF A COMPLAINT. WE BOUGHT A 2000 RANGER APPROXIMATELY A YEAR AGO. THE SPARE TIRE WAS MISSING AND WE FOUND OUT WHY. THE SPARE TIRE WINCH ASSEMBLY WAS A BLOCK OF RUST AND THE SHEET METAL THAT MADE UP THE HOLDER THAT THE CARRIER WAS ATTACHED TO IS SO SEVERELY ROTTED THAT IT COULD NOT POSSIBLY EVEN HOLD A TIRE. THE SHEET METAL MENTIONED IS A STRUCTURAL PART OF THE REAR FRAME AND IT HAS MAJOR ROT AND SHOULD PROBABLY BE REPLACED. MY SON NEEDED A SPARE TIRE SO SINCE THERE WAS NO HOLDER HE PUT IT IN THE BED. WHEN HE PUT IT IN THE BED IN BOUNCED TO THE RIGHT AND PUT A LARGE HOLE IN THE SIDE OF THE BED JUST BEHIND THE CAB. WE STARTED TO CHECK OUT THE REST OF THE BED ONLY TO FIND OUT THAT IT WAS SO RUSTED THAT IT WAS LITERALLY STATING TO CRUMBLE IN SPOTS. WHILE CHECKING IT OUT WE PUT SEVERAL MORE HOLES IN THE FLOOR OF THE BED AND THE SIDES JUST BY POKING AROUND WITH A SCREWDRIVER. THE BED IS A STEPSIDE AND THERE IS NO METAL LEFT UNDER THE STEPS AT ALL, IF YOU WERE TO STEP ON EITHER SIDE YOU WOULD CRACK THE FIBERGLASS SIDES. WE ARE NOW IN THE PROCESS OF HAVING TO REPLACE THE BED. ALL OF THE BOLTS HAD TO BE CUT OUT DUE TO THE RUST. ONCE WE GOT THE BED OFF WE WERE SHOCKED TO SEE THAT THE FRAME WAS COVERED TOP TO BOTTOM WITH RUST. I HAVE RESTORED OLDER TRUCKS IN THE PAST SOME FROM THE 40'S AND I HAVE NEVER ENCOUNTERED RUST LIKE I HAVE SEEN ON THIS ONE, IT ALMOST LOOKS LIKE THERE WAS NO PAINT ON IT FROM THE FACTORY AT ALL. WE ARE STILL IN THE PROCESS OF WIRE BRUSHING THE FRAME SO WE CAN SPRAY A RUST CONVERTER AND TRY TO REPAINT THE FRAME. WHILE HOME FROM COLLEGE FOR THE WEEKEND I INVESTIGATED THE SMELL OF GAS MY SON WHO DRIVES THIS EXTENDED CAB RANGER XLT NOTIFIED ME OF. UPON LOOKING UNDERNEATH I NOTICED A SMALL SHINNY SPOT ON THE BOTTOM OF THE TANK WITH NO DRIPS OR RUNS. AFTER RETURNING TO COLLEGE LATER THAT WEEK HE STATED IT WORSENED TO LEAKAGE ON THE GROUND OF DUEL 4" SPOTS, ONE ON EACH SIDE BELOW THE TANK. AFTER VIEWING A PHOTO OF THE BOTTOM OF THE WET TANK I NOTICED DROPS ON THE FORWARD STRAP. I DROVE THE TRUCK TO MY LOCATION THIS PAST WEEKEND AND PULLED THE BED OFF TO ACCESS THE TOP OF THE FUEL PUMP WHICH HAD STANDING FUEL. UPON TURNING THE KEY TO ACTIVATE THE FUEL PUMP I SAW A FINE PINHOLE SIZED STREAM PUMPING FROM THE PLASTIC 90 DEGREE FITTING ON TOP OF THE PUMP. UPON CLOSER INVESTIGATION I NOTICED THIS LEAKING FITTING HAD WHAT APPEARED TO BE ABRASION AT THE OUTSIDE TURN. I WAS ABLE TO OBTAIN A REPLACEMENT FITTING AND REPLACED IT FIXING THE LEAKAGE PROBLEM. THE COST OF THIS REPAIR TO ME WAS THE 8 HOURS VACATION TIME AT $28 PER HOUR I WAS REQUIRED TO USE TO ACCOMPLISH THE REPAIR AND THE COST OF THE NEW FUEL LINE FITTING. THE SERIOUSNESS OF THIS FITTING FAILURE AND MY CONCERN IS THAT IT WILL HAPPEN TO SOMEONE WITH LESS AWARENESS OF THEIR SURROUNDINGS WHILE DRIVING THIS MODEL OF VEHICLE. HAD THIS FAILURE GONE UNDETECTED, IGNORED OR EVEN SPRAYED FUEL ONTO THE ADJACENT HOT EXHAUST THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN TRAGIC. FORD AND THE NHSTA NEEDS TO LOOK INTO FIRST WHAT CAUSES THE DAMAGE TO THESE FITTINGS AND IF REPLACING THIS PLASTIC FITTING WITH A STEEL ONE WOULD BE A WAY TO PREVENT THIS CRITICAL PART FROM BECOMING DAMAGED OR WORN TO THE POINT OF CATASTROPHIC FAILURE. WHEN THE TRUCK WAS BEING HOISTED ONTO ROLLBACK I NOTICED THAT THE TIE ROD WAS HANGING. THE YOKE WHERE THE TIE ROD IS BOLTED TO (CAST IRON) WAS BROKEN OFF AND I NOTICED A LOT OF PHEASANT REMAINS ON THE TIEROD AND SUSPENSION. I AM VERY CONCERNED THAT A SMALL BIRD AS THIS WOULD CAUSE THE CAST IRON YOKE TO BREAK, ALSO WHY MY AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. THE FRONT TIRE AND RIM DID NOT IMPACT THE CONCRETE BERRIER. I DO NOT FEEL SAFE DRIVING THIS TRUCK, THE FIRST TIME THE TRANSMISSION WENT I WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF A VERY BUSY INTERSECTION AND WAS ALMOST HIT. THE SECOND TIME WHICH WAS A MONTH AFTER THEY HAD IT IN THE SHOP I WAS GOING TO IMPORTANT TRAINING FOR THE U.S. COAST GUARD, AND IT FAILED. THIS SUDDEN JOLT CAUSED THE TRUCK TO TIP ONTO TWO WHEELS AND THEN SLAM BACK DOWN. BOTH MYSELF AND MY PASSENGER WERE TOSSED AROUND THE TRUCK CAUSING HEAD, NECK, AND BACK INJURIES.
