STEERING

The electronic steering power assist failed several times in the past two weeks. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. The safety of occupants was put at risk because of the difficulty of steering safely in traffic. The car has not yet been taken to my dealer for evaluation. The vehicle or component has not yet been inspected. No warning lamps or other symptoms of the problem appeared prior to the failure.

OUR WELL-MAINTAINED HONDA FIT HAS DEVELOPED AN ISSUE WHERE THE EPS STEERING LIGHT COMES ON SPORADICALLY DURING DRIVING. IN EACH OF THESE EVENTS, THE STEERING ASSIST SOMETIMES CUTS OUT FOR A SECOND OR TWO CAUSING ME TO HAVE TO MANUALLY CONTROL THE STEERING. IN ALL EVENT INSTANCES, CABIN POWER IS AFFECTED: POWER TO RADIO WILL RESTART, AND SOMETIMES DASHBOARD LIGHTS GO AS WELL. IN MORE SEVERE INSTANCES DASHBOARD LIGHTS AND SEATBELT LIGHTS CUTOUT MOMENTARILY AND A STEERING DTC SHINES QUICKLY IN THE DUMMY LIGHT CLUSTER. ENVIRONMENT: EPS STEERING ISSUES HAPPEN AT ALL MANNER OF SPEEDS AND MANUEVERS - REGULAR BACKROAD DRIVING, PARKING LOTS AND EVEN SITTING IDLE. CAR HARDLY HAS BEEN DRIVEN THE PAST FEW YEARS (UNDER 7500/YEAR) AND HAS NEVER HIT ANYTHING, BEEN BUMPED (OR IF IT DID, WE DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT IT) NOR BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT OF ANY KIND. WE ARE IN A SALT-BELT STATE. PROBLEM STARTED OCCURRING LATE DECEMBER 2020, DURING REGULAR COLD WEATHER (30-45 DEGREES CONSISTENTLY); IT IS NOT GARAGED.

I HAVING INTERMITTENT LOSS OF POWER STEERING. SO FAR IT HAS HAPPENED MOSTLY WITH LOW SPEED TURNS. I WILL HAVE TO USE MORE EFFORT TO COMPLETE THE TURN WHEN THIS HAPPENS. I HAD THE POWER STEERING LIGHT COME ON WHILE DRIVING STRAIGHT AHEAD ONCE FOR A FEW SECONDS. 60,000 MILES ON CAR SO FAR WITH NO PROBLEMS IN THE PAST AND NO ACCIDENTS.

WHILE DRIVING CAR WHEN THE EPS LIGHT COMES ON AND POWER STEERING CUTS OUT MID-DRIVE. USUALLY, THIS IS WHILE THE CAR IS HOT, BUT NOT ALWAYS. SOMETIMES, I CAN TURN THE CAR OFF AND THE POWER STEERING RESETS, BUT IT WILL OFTEN CUT OUT AGAIN. THIS CAN HAPPEN AT ANY TIME. I'M TERRIFIED THAT IT WILL CUT OFF AND I'LL GET IN AN ACCIDENT.

I WAS STOPPED AT A STOP SIGN, WAITING TO MAKE A LEFT TURN, WHEN I STARTED MAKING THE LEFT TURN I FELT AND HEARD A LOUD BANG. THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT ACCELERATE BUT I WAS ABLE TO COAST TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, PUT VEHICLE IN PARK BUT IT WOULD STILL ROLL, I THEN APPLIED THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. I THEN PROCEEDED TO CALL MY SON, HE ASKED ME WHAT HAPPENED, I TOLD HIM THAT I HEARD A LOUD BANG & THE VEHICLE WOULDN'T ACCELERATE & THE VEHICLE KEPT ROLLING AFTER IT WAS IN PARK, HE SAID IT SOUNDS LIKE I HAD A BROKEN AXEL I THEN CALLED AAA. AAA ARRIVED & ASKED ME WHAT HAPPENED & IF THE VEHICLE ROLLED WHEN PUT IN PARK, I SAID YES IT STILL ROLLED & THE DRIVER TOLD ME I HAD A BROKEN AXEL. I HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO MY SON'S GARAGE, WHERE HE REPLACED THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE AXEL, THAT INDEED HAD SNAPPED IN HALF. THIS HAPPENED AS I WAS TURNING ONTO BUSY RT 27 IN SHARON, MA. WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A STOP, I HEARD A LOUD BANG FOLLOWED BY A BUZZING/GRINDING SOUND. THE ENGINE WAS STILL RUNNING BUT THE CAR WOULD NOT MOVE FORWARD OR IN REVERSE. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO MY MECHANIC WHO TOLD ME THE AXEL HAD SNAPPED AT THE LOCATION OF A VIBRATION DAMPER.

THE PASSENGER SIDE AXLE SNAPPED IN TWO INSIDE THE RUBBER DAMPER WEIGHT AT ITS CENTER. AS HONDA FORUMS ON THE INTERNET SHOW, THIS IS BECOMING MORE COMMON AS FITS AGE. THE DAMPER IS HELD IN PLACE BY ONLY ONE STAINLESS STEEL CLAMP ( AT ITS LOWER END). SINCE WATER AND SALT CAN ENTER ITS UPPER END , WITHOUT A CLAMP THERE, IT STAYS IN THE SPACE BETWEEN THE AXLE AND DAMPER AND THE CORROSION BEGINS. EVEN AFTERMARKET MANUFACTURERS HAVE DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AND LEFT THE DAMPER OFF THEIR AXLES. WHEN THIS BREAK HAPPENED THE VEHICLE WAS STARTING OFF FROM A STOP AND TURNING RIGHT ON A CITY STREET.

THE CAR HAS APPROXIMATELY 118,000 < MILES. I WAS STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT THAT LED TO A HIGHWAY. WHEN THE LIGHT TURNED GREEN, I PRESSED THE ACCELERATOR AND HEARD A LOUD BANG. THE ENGINE WAS RUNNING BUT THE CAR DID NOT MOVE.I HAD THE CAR BROUGHT TO A HONDA DEALERSHIP. UPON THEIR INSPECTION, I WAS TOLD BOTH FRONT AXLES WERE BROKEN. ACCORDING TO THE SERVICE REP, ONE AXLE DISINTEGRATED AND THE OTHER HAD A NOTICEABLE CRACK IN IT. I REQUESTED THE DAMAGED COMPONENTS BE SAVED FOR AN INVESTIGATION ISN'T THIS A SAFETY CONCERN? WHAT IF THIS HAPPENED WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY?

Three instances of engine misfiring, causing the car to immediately go into a speed limiting mode during driving. This is a major safety hazard and can happen in the middle of high speed driving. The first instance was a 52K miles, second at 69K miles, and third at 130K miles. The most recent instance resulted in the spark plug ejecting from the cylinder head, melting into the coil pack, and stripping out the cylinder head thread. This resulted in a costly repair.

Driving down the highway the spark plug was blown out of the engine head and the car lost power immediately. The car has approximately 12,000 miles and all OEM parts from the manufacture. Maintenance was kept up on the car. This is extremely dangerous since this highway is usually busy with cars and tractor trailers. My son was in the left lane and was almost hit by a tractor trailer due to the violent explosion of the spark plug being blown out of the engine. In addition, was unable to get over to the shoulder of the road and had to stop in the left-hand lane on route 80 in NJ which is very dangerous. Both of my sons were in the car when this occurred. The car was towed to my licensed mechanic who confirmed that the spark plug was blown out of the engine which caused the loud noise and loss of power. There was no warning, symptoms or messages before this occurred which is why I am extremely concerned for the safety of others who own this type of vehicle.

SPARK PLUGS NUMBER 1 & 2 CAME LOOSE AND CAUSE VEHICLE TO SUDDENLY LOOSE POWER ON HIGHWAY. THE LOOSE SPARKPLUGS DAMAGED THE IGNITION COILS AND THE CAR WOULD ONLY RUN AT ABOUT 15 MPH WHICH WAS DANGEROUS ON THE HIGHWAY. WHEN INSPECTED THE NUMBER 3 & 4 PLUGS WERE STILL TIGHT. SPARKPLUGS AND IGNITION COILS NEEDED REPLACEMENT. AROUND 90000 MILES ON VEHICLE. DATE IS ALSO APPROXIMATE

A SPARK PLUG ON THE THIRD CYLINDER BLEW OUT AND STRIPPED THE THREADS ON THE CYLINDER. THE BLOW OUT CAUSED AN ELECTRODE TO BREAK OFF AND DAMAGED ONE OF THE VALVES. I MADE HONDA AMERICA AWARE OF THE PROBLEM AND ASKED THEM TO HONOR A "GOODWILL" WARRANTY SINCE, DESPITE BEING TWO YEARS OUTSIDE OF THE WARRANTY, MY CAR ONLY HAS 44,000 MILES ON IT AND THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH THIS MAKE/MODEL OF CAR. HONDA REFUSED. THE TOTAL COST OF REPAIRS WILL LIKELY BE $4,000.

THIS WAS THE FIRST OF TWO INCIDENTS OF SUDDEN ACCELERATION. BOTH TIMES PARKING THE CAR AND GIVING IT A LITTLE GAS TO EASE INTO A SPACE THE CAR TOOK OFF AT HIGH RATE OF SPEED; THE FIRST TIME, ALMOST CRASHING INTO MY GARAGE DOOR AND THE SECOND TIME JUMPING A SIDEWALK AND ALMOST HITTING A METAL HAND RAIL. I TOOK IT TO HONDA DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAID THEY COULD FIND NOTHING WRONG, AND SAID I MUST HAVE HIT BOTH BRAKE AND ACCELERATOR AT SAME TIME. BECAUSE HONDA CHOSE TO USE SOY-BASED WIRES FOR THE WIRES LEADING TO THE TRANSMISSION, THEY ARE VERY, VERY TEMPTING TO RODENTS. IN FACT, IN 2015, A RODENT OF SOME SORT CRAWLED INTO MY ENGINE AND CHEWED THROUGH THE WIRING THAT CONTROLS MY TRANSMISSION. PART OF THE REPAIR WAS THAT THEY WRAPPED THE REPLACEMENT WIRES IN "SPECIAL TAPE" HONDA MAKES TO DETER RODENTS (IT'S SPICY). (IN OTHER WORDS, THEY KNOW THIS IS AN ISSUE AND REFUSE TO FIX IT.) DESPITE A) PARKING IN A GARAGE B) HAVING THE REPELLENT TAPE ON THERE C) HAVING PEST CONTROL AND NO RODENT ISSUE WHERE I PARK, I STARTED MY CAR YESTERDAY TO FIND THE SAME SYMPTOMS AS 2015. EVERY TIME THE TRANSMISSION TRIED TO AUTOMATICALLY SHIFT WHILE DRIVING TO THE DEALERSHIP DOWN THE STREET, THE CAR WOULD CLUNK AND SHAKE. THE DEALERSHIP INFORMED ME THAT A RODENT HAD CHEWED THROUGH THE WIRES THAT HELP CONTROL THE TRANSMISSION AGAIN AND THAT IT WAS A "COMMON PROBLEM." COMMON ENOUGH IN FACT THAT THE DEALER TOLD ME ABOUT A GUY WHO HAD IT FIXED, THEN A WEEK LATER, HAD TO HAVE IT FIXED AGAIN DUE TO MORE RODENTS. THEY SAID IT WAS JUST A FACT OF OWNING A VEHICLE. THEY SUGGESTED I "OPT FOR THE SPICY TAPE," WHICH THEY CHARGE MORE FOR. I EXPLAINED THAT IF THEY'D LOOKED AT MY ENGINE, THEY'D KNOW I ALREADY HAD THAT TAPE ON THERE! THE SERVICEMAN THEN SHRUGGED AND SAID HE COULDN'T HELP ME. THAT IT COULD HAPPEN OVER AND OVER AGAIN AND THERE WAS "NOTHING" I COULD DO. THAT SOUNDS LIKE A RECALL ISSUE TO ME AND A MANUFACTURER REFUSING TO COVER THIS UNDER WARRANTY.

AT 75,000 MILES DRIVER DOOR FAILS TO UNLOCK OR LOCK USING POWER UNLOCK/LOCK SYSTEM AND MUST MANUALLY BE LOCKED/UNLOCKED. THE LOCKING/UNLOCKING POWER SYSTEMS STARTED AS INTERMITTENT BUT HAVE BECOME NON-FUNCTIONAL NOW.

ON 12/31/2013 I PARKED MY HONDA FIT 2012 IN THE PARKING GARAGE OF CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL LOS ANGELES AT 6AM AND LEFT IT THERE WHILE MY LITTLE GIRL HAD SURGERY. WHEN I RETURNED TO IT AT 4:30, I WAS UNABLE TO OPEN THE DOORS WITH THE KEY FOB. THE LIGHT ON THE FOB FLASHED, SO I KNEW IT WASN'T THE PROBLEM. THERE IS ONLY ONE KEYED LOCK ON THE CAR ON THE DRIVER'S HANDLE. I TRIED TO PUT THE KEY INTO THIS MECHANICAL LOCK, BUT IT WOULD ONLY GO HALF-WAY AND WOULD NOT OPEN THE DOOR. I CALLED THE HONDA CARE LINE WHO SENT A TOW TRUCK WHOSE DRIVER TRIED FOR HALF AN HOUR OR SO TO UNLOCK THE DOOR THROUGH THE WINDOW, THEN SAID HE COULDN'T DO IT AND LEFT. I CALLED THE HONDA NUMBER AGAIN; THEY SENT ANOTHER TRUCK WHOSE DRIVER TRIED FOR ANOTHER HALF HOUR OR SO, THEN LEFT. I CALLED MY CAR INSURANCE COMPANY, STATE FARM, WHO SENT A AAA TRUCK WHOSE DRIVER ALSO TRIED TO OPEN THE DOOR WITH THE AIR BLADDER DEVICE IN THE WINDOW, BUT WAS UNABLE TO DO SO. AT THAT POINT I ASKED HIM TO BREAK THE SMALL, FRONT PASSENGER WINDOW. HE DID SO, THEN HE WAS ABLE TO UNLOCK THE DOOR, RAISE THE HOOD AND JUMP THE BATTERY TO START MY CAR. THE HOOD CAN'T BE OPENED EXCEPT BY THE LATCH INSIDE THE CAR. HOW IS IT LEGAL FOR A CAR TO BE BUILT WITHOUT A WAY TO LIFT THE HOOD TO JUMP THE BATTERY? AS LONG AS I COULDN'T OPEN THE DOOR, I WAS UNABLE TO START THE CAR. THERE IS NO WAY TO GET INTO THE CAR WHEN THE BATTERY IS DEAD. While driving my regular commute to work with the radio on, the radio and interior lights (not sure if headlights because I can't see them) flashed on and off and the power steering warning light flashed on and off. At that time, the car jerked and I lost power steering for a moment. This happened several times and the radio stopped working. This did not happen on the way home, but reoccured a few days later. I made an appointment with the dealer They had my car for the day and were not able to locate the issue, but they fixed my radio and told me to bring it back if it happened again. They checked alternator, fuses, and looked for an electrical short. A few weeks later, it happened again, I brought the car back and they could not find the problem, but fixed the radio. The car was fine for a month and it is happening again. Losing power steering while driving is a serious safety hazard for myself and others.

HONDA TROUBLESHOOTED AND STATED IN THEIR PAPERWORK "FOUND EVAP GAS CAP HAS NOT HAVE THE UPDATED GAS CAP. ALSO FOUND THE TRANSMISSION 3RD PRESSURE SWITCH IS STUCK ON. RECOMMEND TO REPLACE THE GAS CAP AND THE TRANSMISSION 3RD PRESSURE SWITCH." I ASKED IF WORK WAS COVERED UNDER ANY WARRANTY AND WAS TOLD NO. OWNERS MANUAL SAYS THAT THE SRS LIGHT MEANS THERE IS A PROBLEM RANGING FROM SEAT BELT BUCKLE TENSION TO THE SIDE AND CURTAIN AIRBAGS HARNESS RESTRAINTS. THE FUEL GAUGE IS NON-LINEAR, IE WHEN IT SAYS YOU HAVE A HALF OF A TANK, YOU REALLY ONLY HAVE 1/8 OR 1/4. SEEMS SILLY IN THIS DAY AND AGE OF COMPUTER CONTROLLED STUFF I HAVE TO REMEMBER I REALLY DON'T HAVE THAT MUCH FUEL AND I COULD EASILY GET STRANDED. *JS

MY CAR ENGINE DOES NOT RESPOND TO THE ACCELERATOR WHEN STARTING FROM A STANDSTILL WITH THE STEERING WHEEL TURNED TO THE RIGHT OR LEFT. THIS HAS HAPPENED SEVEN TIMES IN THE 1300 MILES I HAVE DRIVEN THE CAR. THIS ABNORMAL CONDITION HAS LEFT ME MOMENTARILY STOPPED IN THE MIDDLE OF BUSY INTERSECTIONS. I FIND THAT IF I AM STEERING STRAIGHT AHEAD, THE VEHICLE WILL NOT MALFUNCTION BUT WHEN IT DOES HAPPEN, PRESSING THE ACCELERATOR TO THE FLOOR WILL CAUSE THE ENGINE TO RESPOND, EVENTUALLY. HONDA SHOULD ADDRESS THIS SERIOUS AND POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS CONDITION.
