THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE GEAR SHIFTER NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. TRANSMISSION FAILED. VEHICLE FAILED TO MOVE FORWARD, THE SYMPTOMS ARE EXACTLY HOW HONDA EXPRESSED IN THE WARRANTY EXTENSION. THE TRANSMISSION WAS REPLACED ONCE AT A HONDA DEALER AT OUT OF POCKET COST WHEN THE VEHICLE HAD 124K MILES. I CALLED THE HONDA PRODUCT & CONCERN DEPARTMENT, AND FILED A CASE # [XXX]. THERE ARE SEVERAL FORUMS AND SITES WITH CONSUMERS HAVING TRANSMISSION FAILURE ON ODYSSEY 1999-2003 OVER AND OVER AGAIN. HONDA SHOULD BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR FAULTY DESIGN. OUR 1999 HONDA ODYSSEY HAS RELATIVELY LOW MILEAGE (~125000 MILES) AND IT HAS BEEN DIAGNOSED AS HAVING TRANSMISSION PROBLEM AGAIN. WHEN IT ONLY HAD ABOUT 30000 MILES, IT HAD A TRANSMISSION PROBLEM AND ITS REPLACEMENT WAS COVERED UNDER MANUFACTURE WARRANTY AT THAT TIME. WE SEARCHED THE INTERNET AND FOUND THAT THE TRANSMISSION PROBLEM IS A VERY COMMON FOR HONDA VEHICLES. WE CONTACTED AMERICA HONDA AND THEY TOLD US IT HAS ALREADY PASSED THE WARRANTY PERIOD AND THEY WOULD NOT HELP WITH THE TRANSMISSION REPAIR. WE PAID FULL STICKER PRICE FOR THIS VAN 14 YEARS AGO AND WISH IT CAN LAST UP TO 200000 MILES. NOW WE ARE RELUCTANT TO PAY FOR THE HIGH REPAIR COST OR WE COULD NOT SELL IT AT A SATISFACTORY PRICE. SEVERAL TIMES OVER PAST TWO WEEKS VEHICLE HAS STALLED UNEXPECTEDLY SHORTLY AFTER STARTING OR WHILE DRIVING - DASHBOARD LIGHTS AND GAUGES (INCLUDING ODOMETER) ALL BLANK EXCEPT 3 BLINKS OF GREEN "KEY" LIGHT (IMMOBILIZER INDICATOR); ACCESSORIES STAY OPERATIONAL (RADIO, ETC) BUT ENGINE SHUTS OFF. WILL RE-START AFTER A FEW TRIES, TYPICALLY; FAILED TRIES INCLUDE ENGINE STARTING WHILE KEY HELD IN START POSITION BUT DYING IMMEDIATELY WHEN RETURNING KEY TO "RUN" POSITION. WILL STAY RUNNING IF KEY IS HELD BETWEEN "START" AND "RUN" LOCATION. DRIVER SIDE AUTOMATIC SLIDING DOOR UNLATCHED WHILE DRIVING ON INTERSTATE. I GOT A EMERGENCY TONE TELLING ME SOMETHING WAS WRONG, BUT NO INDICATION ON THE DASH. I FOUND A COUPLE RECALLS FOR THIS PROBLEM AND STOPPED BY THE LOCAL HONDA DEALER (PIAZZA), BUT THEY SAID THE VIN HAS NO RECALLS AND THE RECALL IS TOO OLD. I JUST BOUGHT THE VEHICLE A MONTH AGO. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE KNOWN BY HONDA AND EVEN IF IT IS HAPPENING ONLY NOW, THE DEALER SHOULD REPAIR AT NO COST TO ME.

THEREFORE, THE VAN THINKS THE DOOR IS STILL OPEN (OPEN DOOR LIGHT IS ON, BUZZES CONTINUALLY WHEN PUT INTO GEAR, AND INTERIOR LIGHTS STAY ON). BECAUSE THIS PROBLEM MY SON GOT HURT BECAUSE THE DOOR DIDN'T STOP WHEN HE WAS GETTING INTO THE VAN SO THE DOOR TRAPPED HIS ARM. THE VAN ENGINE TURNED OFF WHILE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY AT 70MPH WHILE MY FAMILY AND I WERE ON THE THIRD LANE. I ALMOST GOT IN AN ACCIDENT TRYING TO GET TO THE RIGHT SHOULDER. VAN SPEED WAS DOWN TO 40MPH WHILE MAKING RIGHTS TO GET THE RIGHT SHOULDER. THE VAN STARTED IMMEDIATELY, AND WE WENT ON OUR WAY. AFTER EXITING THE FREE WAY THE ENGINE AGAIN STOPPED BUT THIS TIME WE WERE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE INTERSECTION. THE LIGHTS TURNED RED AND I WAS BLOCKING ON COMING TRAFFIC AND THE PERSON BEHIND ME WAS HONKING HIS HORN. I PUT THE VAN IN PARK AND RESTARTED THE IT AND CONTINUED THROUGH THE RED LIGHT. MEAN WHILE MY WIFE NOTICED SMOKE COMING OUT OF THE STEERING WHEEL. WHEN I GOT HOME THAT EVENING I REMOVED THE COVER AND IGNITION SWITCH WAS OVERHEATING AND KILLING THE ENGINE ( SOLDER JOINTS ON THE WIRES WERE MELTING). I LOOKED UP THIS PROBLEM ON THE INTERNET AND IT CONFORMED THE SWITCH PROBLEM ALSO THE VAN WAS RECALLED FOR THAT REASON. I CALL HONDA AND I WAS TOLD THAT THIS RECALL WAS DONE ON THIS VAN. THE ENGINE STOPPED MULTIPLE TIMES WHILE DRIVING TILL I GOT THE PART REPLACED. THE ISSUE HERE IS THAT THE RECALL DID NOT WORK, AND THE REPLACED PARTS HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM AS THE ORIGINAL RECALL ( OVERHEATING SWITCH) . I HAVE REPLACED THE SWITCH. WHEN I EXIT THE DRIVER'S SEAT AND STEP DOWN, MY THIGH SOMETIMES HITS THE POWER SEAT RECLINING CONTROL AND CAUSES THE SEAT TO RECLINE. THE SWITCH IS SPRING LOADED AND WOULD NORMALLY AUTOMATICALLY JUMP BACK TO THE NEUTRAL POSITION WHEN RELEASED. FOR SOME UNKNOWN REASON, IT'S POSSIBLE TO NUDGE IT WITH MY THIGH AT JUST THE RIGHT ANGLE THAT THE SWITCH DOES NOT RETURN TO ITS CENTER/NEUTRAL POSITION. I'VE TRIED TO REPRODUCE THIS MANUALLY BY PUSHING IT IN THIS AND THAT DIRECTION AND I JUST CAN'T DO IT. THERE SEEMS TO BE SOME CAUSE RELATED TO BODY POSITIONING AND THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF PRESSURE IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION. ONE TIME, I EXITED THE VEHICLE, TO CHECK SOMETHING IN THE REAR OF THE CAR AND HEARD MY SON CRYING. HE WAS SEATED IN A CAR SEAT BEHIND THE DRIVER'S SEAT. THE DRIVER'S SEAT HAD RECLINED AND THE HANDLEBAR BEHIND THE DRIVER'S SEAT WAS PRESSED FIRMLY AGAINST HIS LEGS. LUCKILY HE WAS OK; BUT THIS INCIDENT HIGHLIGHTS THE POTENTIAL DANGER OF THIS DEFECT. SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH THE DESIGN OR MANUFACTURE OF THE SWITCHES AND/OR SEAT. THEY SHOULD NOT BE SO EASILY ACTIVATED. THE SWITCHES ARE LOCATED CLOSE TO THE FOAM OF THE DRIVER'S SEAT WHICH COMPRESSES EASILY. OUR FIRST COIL SPRING BROKE AT 46,751 MILES YR 2002 RT SIDE. THE SECOND ONE BROKE 97653 MILES LF SIDE 2005 LUCKILY MY WIFE AND SON WERE STOPPED AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT WHEN THE LEFT SIDE OF THE VAN FELL DOWN RESULTING IN A TIRE AND SWAY BARS WHEEL SENSOR DAMAGE. THE THIRD COIL SPRING BROKE 123,000 MILES RT SIDE. WE ARE VERY FORTUNATE THAT WE WERE STOPPED OR THE DEALER FOUND THE BROKEN SPRING. I HAVE THE CURRENT COIL SPRING AND THE ONLY DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO ARE ONE HAS A COATING ON IT THE OTHER IS PAINTED. SAME SIZE DIA METAL. I HAVE A 1999 HONDA ODYSSEY, 147,000 MILES. ON SATURDAY, MARCH 3, 2007 AT APPROXIMATELY 11:30 AM, I WAS DRIVING AND HEARD A LOUD NOISE BENEATH MY VEHICLE. I THEN HEARD A PIECE OF METAL SLIDING DOWN THE ROADWAY BEHIND ME. AFTER PULLING OVER AND NOTICING THAT MY FRONT RIGHT TIRE HAD BEEN PUNCTURED AND GOING FLAT, I RETRIEVED THE LARGE PIECE OF COILED METAL FROM THE ROADWAY. MY FIRST THOUGHT WAS A BROKEN COIL SPRING, BUT IT APPEARED THAT THE SPRINGS WERE OK. I REPLACED THE TIRE AND PROCEEDED SLOWLY BELIEVING THAT I HAD PROBABLY RUN OVER THE BROKEN SPRING WHICH HAD BEEN LEFT IN THE ROADWAY BY ANOTHER VEHICLE. APPROXIMATELY 10 MILES DOWN THE ROAD I HEARD THE SAME SOUND, AND ANOTHER PIECE OF METAL SLIDING DOWN THE ROAD. I RETRIEVED THAT PIECE OF METAL AND COMPARED IT WITH THE FIRST, AND IT IS A NEAR DUPLICATE MATCH, INCLUDING THE LOCATION OF THE BREAK. UPON FURTHER INSPECTION, I NOTICED THAT MY VAN HAD BROKEN BOTH THE LEFT AND RIGHT SIDE FRONT COIL SPRINGS, NEARLY IDENTICALLY, BUT IT WAS DIFFICULT TO TELL BECAUSE THEY APPEARED TO STILL BE SEATED PROPERLY IN THE COIL HOUSING CLOSEST TO THE TIRE. IT APPEARS THAT THE BROKEN COIL SPRINGS ARE RUSTED THROUGH THE BLACK MANUFACTURERS PAINT AT THE LOCATION OF THE FRACTURE. I HAD TWO OF MY CHILDREN WITH ME AT THE TIMES OF THE BREAKS. I ESTIMATE MY SPEED AT 50 MPH ON THE FIRST BREAK, ON THE TWO LANE ROADWAY, AND THE ROADWAY WAS LEVEL, CLEAR AND DRY. THE SECOND BREAK OCCURRED PROBABLY WITHIN 10 MILES OF THE FIRST AND I ESTIMATE MY SPEED AT APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH. I WAS OPERATING ON A TWO LANE ROADWAY, AND THE ROADWAY WAS LEVEL, CLEAR AND DRY. IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT A TIME BETWEEN THE TWO BREAKS, AFTER CRESTING A HILL ON A TWO LANE ROADWAY, I HEARD A METAL SCRAPING NOISE BENEATH THE VEHICLE, AND IMMEDIATELY PULLED OVER AND CHECKED UNDER THE VEHICLE AND WALKED THE ROADWAY BEHIND THE VEHICLE, BUT WAS UNABLE TO LOCATE WHAT CAUSED THE SOUND. WHEN I ASKED TO HAVE THE OTHER COIL SPRING REPLACED AS A SAFETY CONCERN THEY TOLD ME IT WAS NOT NECESSARY DUE TO THEY HAVE ONLY SEEN ONE IN THERE DEALERSHIP WITH THIS PROBLEM I WAS ALWAYS TOLD THAT IF YOU REPLACE ONE TIRE OR SHOCK OR STRUT YOU SHOULD DO IT IN PAIRS! LUCKY FOR US WE HAD A EXT COVERAGE (MILEAGE 46751) THE SECOND TIME WAS AT (97653) LUCKY FOR MY WIFE THE VAN WAS AT A LIGHT AND THE TIRE WENT FLAT. AT THE DEALER THE MECHANIC FOUND THE RIGHT COIL SPRING BROKEN WITH A FLAT TIRE AND A LIST OF BENT AND BROKEN PARTS A TOTAL OF $617.00 OUT OF OUR POCKET. COIL SPRINGS SHOULD NEVER BRAKE , THIS IS A SAFETY CONCERN.

IT LOSSES SPRING ACTION, AND HAS BEEN REPLACED THREE TIMES BY THE HONDA DEALERSHIP IN THE PAST 6 MONTHS. OUR FOUR YEAR OLD SITS IN THE SEAT WITH A BOOSTER. ATTENDING A CAR SEAT SEMINAR THROUGH THE COUNTY WE LIVE IN, THEY STATED THAT ONCE THE BELT IS FASTENED IT MUST BE FULLY EXTENDED TO THE LOCKED POSITION. WITH THE FIRST TWO REPLACEMENTS OF THE SEAT BELT THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME IT WAS CORRECT TO EXTEND AND LOCK THE SEAT BELT. UPON THE LAST REPLACEMENT THEY RECOMMENDED THAT WE DO NOT EXTEND AND LOCK THE SEAT BELT. WE FEEL THIS IS NOT PROPER OPERATION FOR FULL SAFETY. EVERY WINTER SINCE WE PURCHASED OUR 1999 ODYSSEY BRAND NEW, THE POWER SLIDING DOORS WOULD FREEZE AND LOCK UP. IT WILL NOT WORK. I SPOKE WITH ERIC AT HONDA RECALL AND CAMPAIGN DEPARTMENT--I TOLD HIM THAT MY CAR WAS HAVING THE EXACT SAME ISSUE AS THE RECALL. THE KEY CAN BE REMOVED WHILE THE CAR IS IN GEAR AND IT HAS ROLLED ALREADY. IN 2008 WE BOUGHT THIS VAN FROM THE LOCAL HONDA DEALER IN GRESHAM, OR. SHORTLY AFTER WE BOUGHT THE VEHICLE WE FOUND OUT THAT OUR VAN WAS ORIGINALLY MANUFACTURED FOR SALE IN CANADA, AND IT WAS IMPORTED BACK IN 1999 WHEN THE VAN WAS NEW. THIS INFORMATION WAS NEVER DISCLOSED TO US THROUGHOUT THE SALE, AND WE ONLY FOUND OUT WHEN WE TRIED TO HAVE A SECOND KEY MADE AND THE HONDA DEALER SAID THAT THE VIN NUMBER DIDN'T EXIST IN THEIR SYSTEM. HONDA REFUSES TO DO ANY RECALLS THAT HAVE BEEN ISSUED FOR THIS VEHICLE IN THE USA OR CANADA. IT WOULD BE READY BY 6-24-04. ON THE 24TH, THEY CALLED AND SAID THEY HAD BROKEN AN AXLE AND WOULD HAVE TO ORDER THE PARTS OVERNIGHT AND IT WOULD BE READY ON 6-25 AT 2PM. SHE CALLED AT 1:30 AND THEY SAID THEY HADN'T RECEIVED THE PARTS YET. AT 3:40 SHE CALLED AGAIN AND THEY SAID IT WAS READY. THEY DROVE TO GET THE CAR. AFTER THAT THE MAINTENANCE LIGHT CAME ON. WHEN THEY TURNED THE CAR OFF IT WOULD NOT TURN BACK ON AGAIN. HER HUSBAND CHECKED THE CAR AND ALL OF THE TRANSMISSION FLUID WAS LEAKING OUT. THEY (THE DEALERSHIP) DROVE TO HER HOME (AN HOUR AWAY) ON MONDAY 6-27 AND DROPPED OFF HER CAR AND GOT THEIR RENTAL. THEY TOLD HER THE SRS LIGHT WAS ON BECAUSE THE BATTERY WAS WEAK. THEY REPLACED THE BATTERY. THE SRS LIGHT WAS STILL ON; THEY CALLED THE DEALERSHIP AND MADE AN APPT. TO BRING THE CAR BACK. THEY ARE UPSET BECAUSE THE SRS LIGHT WAS NOT ON BEFORE. I PURCHASED A 1999 HONDA ODYSSEY IN AUG 1999. FIRST ACCOUNT WAS IN MAR 2000. BY NOV 2000, VEHICLE WAS SEEN 3 TIMES FOR THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. FIVE YEARS LATER, THIS VEHICLE HAS BEEN SERVICED 12 TIMES (WORKING ON NUMBER 13 NOW) FOR THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. EGR KIT HAS BEEN REPLACED 5 TIMES, REMAINING VISITS ACCOUNTED FOR MY CLEANING EGR PORTS, REPLACING THE EGR VALVE, AND REPLACING THE GAS CAP. I'VE HAD OTHER VEHICLES FOR 7+ YEARS AND NEVER REPLACED A GAS CAP! THIS VEHICLE HAS GONE THROUGH 2? CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS TIED TO THE EMISSIONS SYSTEM. AS A RESULT, VEHICLE IS NOW HAVING PROBLEMS PASSING INSPECTION. DURING THE LAST VISIT, LOCAL DEALER REPLACED THE EGR KIT IN ORDER TO GET THE 05 INSPECTION COMPLETED. TWO WEEKS LATER THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON AGAIN. IN ADDITION, INTERNAL DAMAGE WAS FOUND IN THE TRANSMISSION IN AUG 03. DEALER AGREED TO TAKE CARE OF THIS PROBLEM IN GOOD FAITH. THIS WAS PRIOR TO THE OFFICIAL RECALL NOTICE. AT THE TIME OF SERVICE THE MILEAGE WAS CLOCKED AT 81823. LESS THAN 1 YEAR LATER (JUNE 2004), IT WAS DISCOVERED BY AN INDEPENDENT GARAGE THAT THE LEFT AXLE SEAL GOING INTO THE TRANSMISSION WAS CRACKED AND THE TRANSMISSION FLUID WAS EXTREMELY GRITTY. WHEN BROUGHT TO THE ATTENTION OF THE DEALER, I WAS INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS OUT OF WARRANTY ON THE NEW TRANSMISSION AND I WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR ANY SERVICE REQUIRED (MILEAGE WAS CLOCKED AT 102000). AS A SINGLE MOTHER OF 3 YOUNG CHILDREN, MY MAIN OBJECTIVE IS TO BE ABLE TO TRANSPORT THEM IN A SAFE, RELIABLE MANNER. I TOLD THEM THAT I AM STILL FEELING SOME HARD SLIPPAGE ON DOWNSHIFTS. WITH APPROXIMATELY 82,500 MILES ON MY CAR, THE TECHNICIANS BELIEVED IT WAS THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER. THE ESTIMATE WAS $701.90. AT 54,700 MILES (JULY 2001) THE CAR MADE A CLUNKING NOISE WHEN PUT INTO GEAR. TCS LIGHT AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. SERVICE COULDNOT REPRODUCE CLUNKING PROBLEM. SINCE THE TRANSMISSION WAS OUT OF WARRENTY I KEPT DRIVING MAKING SURE TO HAVE REGULAR MAINTENANCE. IT CONTINUED TO "REV" WHEN STARTING TO MOVE OR EXCELLERATING QUICKLY. TCS LIGHT AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN AT 100,000 (DEC 2002). I QUESTIONED THEM AGAIN ABOUT THE TRANSMISSION BUT WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS A CATALYTIC CONVERTER/ ENGINE CONTROL SYSTEM.( OUT OF STOCK UNTIL FEBRUARY). TCS AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS AGAIN IN JUNE 2003 AT 117,900. CODE SHOWED A TRANSMISSION PO740.TRANSMISSION "SMELLED BURNED." SEPT. 2003 TCS AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT INDICATE TRAINSMISSION NEEDS REPLACING. THE DEALER NOR MANUFACTURER HAD TOLD ME THAT THE WARRENTY HAD BEEN EXTENDED TO 100,000. THIS TRANSMISSION PROBLEM IN THE ODYSSEY, AND OTHER HONDAS, IS SO WIDE SPREAD THAT I CAN'T BELIEVE NOTHING IS BEING DONE FOR THE CONSUMER. MY COUSIN IN MISSOURI OWNS A 1999 ODYSSEY AND SHE HAS HAD TO REPLACE BOTH THE TRAINSMISSION AND CATALYTIC CONVERTOR AS WELL. A PRETTY BIG COINCIDENCE. I COULD NAME OTHER PARTS WE HAVE BOTH REPLACED. COULD IT BE THAT SOME PARTS OF THE ODYSSEY ARE LEMONS? CALLING HONDA COPOROATE IS A JOKE. THEY PUT YOU ON HOLD, HAVE A GOOD LAUGH AND THEN TELL YOU THEY CAN'T DO ANYTHING BECAUSE THE CAR IS OVER THE MILEAGE LIMIT. THEY SHOULD BE MADE TO DO THE RIGHT THING. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS INCLUDED IN THE ABOVEMENTIONED RECALLS. HOWEVER, THE FIRST RECALL REPAIR WAS PERFORMED IN APRIL 2001, AND THE SECOND REPAIR WAS PERFORMED ON OCTOBER 8, 2002. THERE WAS A RECALL BACK ON 4/25/00 FOR THE DOOR LATCH ASSEMBLY. THE RECALL # WAS 00V119000. I'M HAVING THE SAME EXACT PROBLEM AGAIN WITH THE DOOR NOT CLOSING ALL THE WAY. I CALLED HENNESSEY HONDA IN WOODSTOCK, GA AND THEY TOLD ME THAT THEY DIDN'T HAVE THAT RECALL ON RECORD. THEN THEY WENT ON TO SAY THAT THEY WON'T FIX IT AGAIN. I CHECKED THE HISTORY OF THE VEHICLE RECALLS AND DON'T SEE WHERE THIS WAS DONE. WHY SHOULD I HAVE TO PAY FOR THIS REPAIR WHEN IT WAS ALREADY DETERMINED THAT IT'S A MANUFACTURER DEFECT? THE PASSENGER SIDE SLIDING DOOR ON MY 1999 HONDA ODYSSEY HAS FAILED TO OPEN ON MANY OCCASIONS AND I DIDN'T THINK OF IT AS ANYTHING MORE THAN A NUISANCE. SIDE SLIDING DOOR HANDLE BROKE OFF WHEN OPENING DOOR. PIN THAT SHEARED OFF AND THAT DOOR PIVOTS ON APPEARS TO BE MADE OF PLASTIC. THESE DOORS NORMALLY ARE POWERED OPEN. DUE TO PROBLEM WITH SWITCH DOOR WOULD ONLY OPEN MANUALLY. WHEN OPENING MANUALLY THESE DOORS TAKE CONSIDERABLY MORE FORCE TO OPEN THAN A NORMAL SLIDING DOOR. THE REMOVABLE BASE SECTION OF A CENTURY SMART FIT PLUS INFANT CHILD RESTRAINT, SER. # 4529, MANUFACTURED 11-21-97, SHOWS SIGNS OF COLLAPSE CAUSED BY NORMAL INSTALLATION. THE EXTENDABLE FOOT USED TO ADJUST THE BASE ANGLE HAS THIN PLASTIC GUIDES, WHICH THE FOOT MOVES UP AND DOWN ALONG. THESE GUIDES HAVE BENT TOWARD THE REAR OF THE SEAT, AND MAY COLLAPSE FURTHER, ALLOWING THE BASE TO SETTLE TO AN IMPROPER ANGLE. ALSO, THE BLUE PLASTIC FOOT ITSELF SHOWS WHITENING OF THE PLASTIC, INDICATING THAT THE PLASTIC HAS BENT OR DEFORMED. IT APPEARS THAT THE ASSEMBLY COLLAPSES BECAUSE OF THE DOWNWARD PRESSURE APPLIED DURING NORMAL, BUT TIGHT, INSTALLATION WITH THE CAR SAFETY BELTS. OUR 1999 HONDA ODYSSEY HAS HAD THE P0740 TORQUE CLUTCH CONVERTER SOLENOID CIRCUIT (OPEN) CODE DISPLAYED NUMEROUS TIMES, WE THOUGHT SINCE IT WAS A SERIOUS ISSUE AND THE TRANSMISSION HAD ALREADY BEEN REPLACED WITHIN 20,000 MILES THAT WE SHOULD ACTUALLY TAKE IT TO THE DEALER IN MARYSVILLE, WA AND HAVE THEM DO A TRANSMISSION FLUSH THEN A SUPERVISOR AND SAID NO YOU SHOULD HAVE US RUN A DIAGNOSTIC BY ONE OF OUR MASTER TECHS. AFTER REITERATING THIS SERIOUSNESS OF OUR TRANSMISSION ISSUE THE CODE COMING ON AND DELAYS IN SHIFTING MOSTLY JUST BARELY NOTICEABLE, THEY ASSURED US IF WE PAID $129 FOR A DIAGNOSTIC THAT A MASTER TECH COULD GET TO THE ISSUE, HOWEVER THEY LATER TOLD US AFTER WE GOT THE CAR BACK AND CALLED ON THE ISSUE THAT AN APPRENTICE (NOT A MASTER TECH) HAD DONE THE ENTIRE INSPECTION AND CAME UP WITH NO PROBLEMS EXCEPT A DIFFERENT CODE HAVING TO DO WITH UP BAD CATALYTIC CONVERTER WHICH HAD NEVER BEEN AN ISSUE BEFORE AND TOLD US WE MAY NEED TO GET THAT REPLACED SOON. 1. SLIDING DOORS WOULD NOT OPEN AT TIMES. DOOR LATCH SYSTEM REPLACED ON BOTH DOORS.2. SLIDING DOOR ON PASSENGER SIDE WOULD INDICATE ON DASH TO BE OPEN. THIS WOULD HAPPEN WHEN CORNERING OR HITTING BUMPS. OVERHEAD LIGHT WOULD TURN ON AND OFF AND CRACKLING SOUND FROM BELOW STEERING WOULD BE HEARD (COINCIDING WITH LIGHTS GOING ON AND OFF). LATCH SYSTEM ON THIS DOOR WAS REPLACED. 3. AIR CONDITIONER SOUND/HUMMING WHEN ON. BELT TENSIONER PREVIOUSLY REPLACED AFTER SAME NOISE WAS HEARD. AT 73,000 MILES MY TRANSMISSION NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. MANY OTHER PEOPLE HAVE REPORTED THIS PROBLEM. I UNDERSTAND HONDA HAS ISSUED A RECALL OR EXTENDED THE WARRANTY ON THE 2000-2001 ODYSSEYS BUT WILL NOT BEING DOING ANYTHING FOR THE 1999 MODEL. I WAS DRIVING ON A CROWDED EXPRESSWAY WHEN MY CAR SEIZED UP COMPLETELY DUE TO A TRANSMISSION FAILURE WHICH PUT ME IN AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS SITUATION. THE TRUCK BEHIND ME HAD ENOUGH ROOM TO BARELY SLOW DOWN BUT IT ALMOST CRASHED INTO ME. I TURNED ON MY EMERGENCY FLASHER LIGHTS AND WAS ABLE TO GET THE CAR ONTO THE SHOULDER OF A SLIGHTLY UPHILL EXIT RAMP, NARROWLY ESCAPING SERIOUS INJURY. I WAS THEN ABLE TO VERY SLOWLY MOVE THE CAR IN FIRST GEAR WITH THE FLASHERS GOING, AND FORTUNATELY WAS CLOSE TO A SIDE STREET WHERE I PARKED THE CAR AND HAD IT TOWED TO THE NEAREST DEALERSHIP. ALTHOUGH HONDA REPLACED MY TRANSMISSION FOR FREE UNDER THE AUSPICES OF A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT BACK IN 2007, THE CAR HAS LOW MILEAGE FOR THE LIFE OF THE TRANSMISSION. ON JUNE 28, OUR 1999 HONDA ODYSSEY LX LOST ALL ELECTRICAL POWER AND ENGINE POWER WHILE TRAVELING ON I-94 E BOUND BETWEEN BATTLE CREEK MI AND THE EXIT TO I-69. 1999 HONDA ODYSSEY HAS A PROBLEM WITH THE SLIDING DOORS. CONSUMER REQUEST REIMBURSEMENT FOR SAFETY RECALLS. *NJ THE CONSUMER STATED THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN TO THE DEALER 4 TIMES FOR PROBLEMS WITH THE SLIDING DOOR NOT OPENING. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1999 HONDA ODYSSEY. WHILE DRIVING AT AN UNKNOWN SPEED, THE VEHICLE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. PRIOR TO THE FAILURE, A GREEN KEY LIGHT SYMBOL ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE VEHICLE WAS PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE VEHICLE RESTARTED NORMALLY AND STALLED AGAIN WHILE DRIVING. THE DEALER STATED THAT THEY WOULD DIAGNOSE THE VEHICLE FOR A PRICE. THE DIAGNOSTIC REVEALED THAT THE HARNESS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AND MAY HAVE CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO STALL. THE SRS AIR BAG LIGHT ILLUMINATED AND WAS REPAIRED FOR FREE. CURRENTLY, THE IGNITION NEEDS TO BE REPAIRED AT THE CONTACT'S EXPENSE. THE CONTACT HAS SCHEDULED AN APPOINTMENT TO HAVE THE IGNITION REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 103,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 108,000.

I OWN A PRE-OWNED 1999 ODYSSEY EX. WE HAVE RECENTLY HAD SEVERAL THINGS GO OUT ON IT. IT CURRENTLY HAS NO DASH LIGHTS AND THE DRIVERS?? SIDE SLIDING DOOR WILL NOT OPEN OR CLOSE. I HAD THE ELECTRICAL PORTION OF THE IGNITION SWITCH REPLACED ON 3/28/2007 BECAUSE OF A RECALL. AFTER THIS WAS DONE, THE DASH LIGHTS QUIT WORKING, WHICH LEADS ME TO BELIEVE THE TWO ARE RELATED. MAYBE INADVERTENTLY A WIRE TO THE DASH LIGHTS WAS LOOSENED WHEN REPLACING THE ELECTRICAL PORTION OF THE IGNITION SWITCH. WHEN I CONTACTED THE DEALER, I WAS TOLD I WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR A DIAGNOSIS TO SEE IF THIS WAS THE PROBLEM. I WAS TOLD THE INSTRUMENT LIGHTING PANEL HAD BEEN REPLACED BEFORE I OWNED THE VEHICLE. IT APPEARS THAT EITHER THE WIRING WAS LOOSENED IN THE PROCESS OF REPAIRING THE IGNITION SWITCH OR THE RECALLED INSTRUMENT LIGHT PANEL HAS GONE OUT AGAIN. I BELIEVE THE DEALER SHOULD BE ABLE TO DIAGNOSIS THIS WITHOUT CHARGING ME, BECAUSE OF THE SITUATION. THE TWO TIMES I HAVE CALLED THE CUSTOMER SERVICE 800 NUMBER, THE PERSONS WHO HAVE HELPED ME HAVE BEEN VERY RUDE AND UNACCOMMODATING. *JB I AM VERY SURPRISED AT THE POOR LEVEL OF CUSTOMER SERVICE I HAVE RECEIVED FROM THE DEALER AND THE 800-CUSTOMER SERVICE LINE. I ASSOCIATE HONDA WITH QUALITY AND SUPERIORITY IN ALL ASPECTS OF THEIR BUSINESS, BUT I CANNOT SAY THAT ANYMORE. I WOULD AUTOMATICALLY BUY A HONDA AS A NEW VEHICLE WHEN I WOULD NEED ONE, BUT SINCE THIS EXPERIENCE, I WOULD DEFINITELY CONSIDER OTHER CARMAKERS. MY WIFE WAS DRIVING THE 1999 HONDA ODYSSEY EX HOME ON THE FREEWAY. WE WERE GOING HOME AFTER HAVING DINNER. WE BOUGHT A 1999 HONDA ODYSSEY FROM CARMAX AND THE FIRST WEEK THAT WE GOT THE CAR THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND WE TOOK IT TO CARMAX. ACCORDING TO THEM THEY FIXED THE PROBLEM AND EVERYTHING WAS FINE THE ENGINE LIGHT WENT OFF. THEN WHEN IT CAME BACK ON FOR THE SAME PROBLEM THEY APPARENTLY FIXED IT AGAIN. THIS HAPPENED A FEW TIMES. NOW WE DIDN'T HAVE WARRANTY AND OUR VAN WAS ACTING UP. THE TRANSMISSION WOULD GIVE A JERK WHEN GOING FROM 1ST TO 2ND GEAR. THE EGR PORTS WERE CLOGGED AND THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER WAS MESSED UP FROM DAY 1. WE TOOK IT TO OUR HONDA DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAID IT WASN'T THE TRANSMISSION, BUT IT WAS. ABOUT A 4 MONTHS LATER IT GOT REALLY BAD AND WE HAD TO GET OUR TRANSMISSION REBUILT, THE IGNITION SWITCH PROBLEM STARTED ALSO (THE CAR ENGINE WOULD STALL RANDOMLY AND IT WE WOULD HAVE TO STOP THE CAR ON THE SHOULDER OF THE FREEWAY AND RESTART THE CAR GOING AT 60 MPH+), NOW WE SPENT 2500 BUCKS TO GET EVERYTHING FIXED. BUT NOW OUR ELECTRICAL SYSTEM IS BAD. THE IN DASH LIGHTS DON'T WORK AND THE BACK LIGHTS DON'T WORK. THE DOORS JUST DIED FOR SOME REASON. ONE SECOND THE HANDLES WOULD WORK AND THE NEXT SECOND THE HANDLES ARE DEAD FROM INSIDE. OUR ALARM SYSTEM DOESN'T WORK EITHER BECAUSE OF THE ELECTRIC PROBLEM. ALL WE WANT IS OUR CAR TO BE FIXED. BEGINNING IN 2000, WHEN THE CAR WAS LESS THAN ONE YEAR OLD, WE HAVE EXPERIENCED MAJOR EQUIPMENT FAILURES. FIRST, THE EGR VALVE MALFUNCTIONED; IT WAS EVENTUALLY REPAIRED AT HONDA'S EXPENSE. NEXT, ONE OF THE MOTORS FOR THE SIDE POWER DOORS FAILED. THAT COST APPROXIMATELY $800 TO REPAIR. THEN, THE TRANSMISSION FAILED, AND HONDA EVENTUALLY COVERED THE FULL COSTS UNDER AN EXTENDED WARRANTY. FOR AT LEAST FOUR YEARS, WE WERE PLAGUED WITH AN ERRATIC "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT, AND SOMETIMES THE COMPUTER CODE WAS INADEQUATE TO DIRECT A REPAIR. IN 2003 THE RADIATOR ROTTED OUT, AND THE REPLACEMENT/REPAIR COST US $800. IN 2004 THE CATALYTIC CONVERTOR FAILED, AND THAT REPLACEMENT/REPAIR COST US $1400. ON JULY 22, 2005, THE REAR A/C VENTS FAILED TO COOL, AND I CALLED FOR AN APPOINTMENT AT OUR LOCAL DEALER TO HAVE THAT CHECKED AND REPAIRED. THE REPAIR WAS SCHEDULED FOR JULY 25, 2005. WHEN I WAS DRIVING THE CAR ON JULY 23 WITH THE A/C TURNED ON (THE FRONT VENTS CONTINUED TO COOL), THE ENGINE DIED WHILE I WAS DRIVING AT A SPEED OF 45 MPH ON A LOCAL HIGHWAY. I MANAGED TO PULL OFF INTO A NEARBY PARKING LOT, AND I WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE CAR AFTER TURNING OFF THE A/C. IT IS NOW AT THE DEALER'S SHOP, AND THE LABOR COSTS ALONE TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE A/C FAILURE WILL COST MORE THAN $350. AFTER INSPECTING THE SYSTEM FOR MORE THAN THREE HOURS JULY 25, THE DEALER'S MECHANIC STILL COULD NOT LOCATE THE SOURCE OF THE PROBLEM. NEEDLESS TO SAY, I HATE THIS CAR! I HAVE HAD MANY MORE PROBLEMS THAN I EVER EXPECTED, AND THE RESPONSES FROM AMERICAN HONDA AND FROM THE LOCAL DEALER HAVE BEEN DISAPPOINTING. NEITHER ESTABLISHMENT KNOWS HOW TO RELATE SUCCESSFULLY TO CUSTOMERS. THIS CAR HAS BEEN A REAL LEMON, AND I AM STRUGGLING WITH MY DECISION ABOUT WHAT TO BUY TO REPLACE IT. ALTHOUGH HONDA HAS A GOOD REPUTATION, I HAVE NOT FOUND THIS CAR TO BE RELIABLE.
