The contact owns a 2003 Toyota Corolla. The contact stated that while her husband and son were driving at approximately 25 MPH, her husband smelled an abnormal burning odor inside the cabin of the vehicle. The contact stated her husband then heard several abnormal sounds like a soda can being opened. The contact stated that the driver's and passenger’s door air bags inadvertently deployed. The vehicle was stopped, and the driver and passenger exited the vehicle. The contact stated that her son’s seat belt tightened and was difficult to unbuckle. The contact stated that as soon as her husband exited the vehicle, the passenger’s side frontal air bag deployed. The contact stated that the Police and Fire Department were contacted. A Police report was filed; however, the contact had not been provided the Police report number. There was no injury sustained. The vehicle was towed to the residence. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.

The contact owns a 2003 Toyota Corolla Matrix. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 15V285000 (Air Bags) however, the notification advised not to drive the vehicle and to contact the local dealer for retrieval of the vehicle. After contacting the local dealer, the vehicle had not yet been retrieved. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. Parts distribution disconnect.

The airbag light came on suddenly, even though I had the airbag recall work done for my vehicle. I took it to a Toyota Dealership who wanted to charge me for the repair which I was willing to and perhaps work with Toyota directly to get reimbursed for but the parts weren't available.

Takata Recall. The contact owns a 2003 Toyota Corolla. The contact received NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V741000 (Air Bags). The vehicle was taken to a dealer and the recall was confirmed to be completed; however, the recall appears open for the VIN. The contact was receiving recall notices for the same recall repair. The contact called the manufacturer to inform them that the dealer had completed the recall. The manufacturer referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline. There were no warning lights illuminated or a failure experienced. Parts distribution disconnect.

IT'S BEEN ALMOST A YEAR SINCE THE FIRST TIME THE CIL TURNED ON. IT STAYS ON FOR A COUPLE DAYS THEN STAYS OFF FOR LIKE A MONTH. IT HAS BEEN DOING THAT SINCE 2012. I HAD MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CHECKED BY A TECH AND HE SAID THAT HE HAS SEEN THE P0770 CODE MANY TIMES FOR THE MATRIX AND COROLLA. HE PRINTED OUT THE TSB (HTTP://WWW.MATRIXOWNERS.COM/TSB/T-EG020-02.PDF) AND ADVISED ME TO TAKE IT TO A TOYOTA SERVICE CENTER. I TOOK IT TO CARSON TOYOTA IN CA AND THEY PRETTY MUCH SAID THE ONLY THING I CAN DO IS FIX THE ISSUE OUT OF MY POCKET WHICH WAS ALMOST $1500! HE SAID THE ISSUE IS THE R & R ENGINE CONTROL MODULE AND IF THAT DOESN'T DO THE TRICK THAT I HAVE TO REPLACE R & R SPEED SENSOR. I PURCHASED MY CAR USED SO IT DIDN'T QUALIFY FOR THE MANUFACTURES WARRANTY. I PERSONALLY THINK THAT THIS SHOULD QUALIFY AS A RECALL. THERE IS SO MANY REPORT ABOUT THIS ISSUE AND SO MANY OTHER TOYOTA CUSTOMERS THAT ARE VERY UNHAPPY. ALLOT OF THE CONSUMERS ARE SAYING THEY HAVE BOUGHT THESE PARTS AND INSTALLED THEM AND THE CIL IS STILL LIGHTING UP. I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO RESOLVE THIS ISSUE. I REFUSE TO PAY $1500 TO REPLACE THE ECM AND THE SPEED SENSOR FOR IT TO NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. NOW I HAVE TO HAVE MY CAR REGISTERED WITH THE REQUIREMENT OF A SMOG CHECK. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE THEY REITERATE THAT THIS FAILURE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THERE WERE NO RELATED RECALLS. THE TOYOTA MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CALLED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 69,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 100,000.

I PURCHASE MY TOYOTA PRE-OWNED WITH 46,000 MILES ON IT ODOMETER. A SHORT WHILE AFTER THE PURCHASE THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. I CALLED THE CAR DEALERSHIP TO FIND OUT WHY THE ENGINE LIGHT WAS ON. THE AGENT STATED THAT MY GAS CAP MAY NOT BE TIGHT ENOUGH. I TIGHTENED MY GAS CAP AND THE LIGHT WHEN OFF FOR ABOUT 20 MINUTES. IT NEVER CAUSED ANY PROBLEMS IN THE PERFORMANCE OF THE CAR. HOWEVER, WHEN I WENT TO GET IT SMOGGED FOR THE FIRST TIME, IT WOULD NOT PASS SMOG. THE MECHANIC AT THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP STATED THAT IT NEEDED A CATALYTIC CONVERTER AND THAT IT WOULD COST AROUND $1,800 TO REPLACE. THEREFORE, I HAD TO GO THE REFEREE TO GET A 2 YEAR WAIVER ON MY SMOG. I AM A SINGLE MOM WITH 2 SPECIAL NEEDS KIDS, I CANNOT GO WITHOUT A CAR. MY CAR WILL BE GOING ON THE NEXT YEAR SOON. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF THERE IS ANY FUNDING TO HELP WITH REPAIRS WHEN THE PROBLEM IS DUE TO MANUFACTURING DEFECTS. MY 2003 TOYOTA CORROLA (ODOMETER READING APPROX. 230,000 MILES) NEVER HAD THIS PROBLEM TILL THIS YEAR AROUND MARCH WHEN MY WIFE NOTICED THAT THE CAR SUDDENLY ACCELARATED AND SHE COULDN'T REDUCE THE SPEED BY BRAKING. FORTUNATELY THERE WAS NO ACCIDENT, AND THE PROBLEM WENT AWAY SUDDNELY AS IT CAME. THIS THING HAPPENED TWICE AFTERWARDS THE CAR WAS TAKEN TO SEARS AUTO CENTER, NATICK, MA AND THEY CLEANED A DIRTY THROTTLE. THE PROBLEM WENT AWAY TILL THREE DAYS AGO THE PROBLEM CAME BACK. I WAS DRIVING THIS TIME IN BROAD DAYLIGHT WITH MEDIUM TRAFFIC. SUDDENLY THE CAR STARTED ACCELARATING AND I COULDN'T REDUCE ACCELARATION BY BRAKING. I CLEARED THE FLOOR MAT AREA IN CASE THERE WAS ANY BLOCKAGE. BUT THERE WAS NONE, AND THE CAR KEPT ON ACCELARATING. IT SCARED THE WITS OUT OF ME, AND I HAD TO STOP THE CAR BY MOVING THE GEAR TO 'PARK'. I INTEND TO TAKE THE CAR BACK TO SEARS AUTO. ORIGINAL TRANSMISSION WAS REPLACED AT 124,000 MILES, AND ONLY 3 YEARS LATER, AND 25,000 MILES LATER, IT NOW NEEDS ANOTHER TRANSMISSION. NOT THE DEPENDABILITY I WAS EXPECTING. IN BOTH INSTANCES, THE SAME THING OCCURRED; ALTHOUGH IT WENT OUT ON ME A LOT FASTER THE SECOND TIME AROUND. I HEARD A GRINDING SOUND EVERY TIME I ACCELERATED, UNTIL IT FINALLY WENT OUT ON ME AND LOCKED UP BOTH TIMES. THE FIRST TIME I WAS ON A SIDE STREET, AND IT HAPPENED WHILE I WAS APPROACHING RED LIGHT (AND ONLY REVERSE WORKED, SO I WAS ABLE TO REVERSE IT INTO A GAS STATION NEARBY). THE SECOND TIME WAS A BIT MORE SCARY (AND I'M PISSED OFF ABOUT THIS EVEN MORE, NOW THAT I'M READING EVERYONE ELSE'S STORY, BECAUSE I COULD'VE BEEN IN A MAJOR ACCIDENT). I WAS DRIVING 65 MPH DOWN THE FREEWAY (IN THE 3RD LANE IN) WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN MY CAR BUCKED (JERKED BACK) ON ME. I IMMEDIATELY GOT OFF THE FREEWAY WITHIN 5-7 SECONDS (THANK GOD I WAS ABLE TO), WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN IT COMPLETELY FROZE/SEIZED/LOCKED UP ON ME AND PROCEEDED TO SKID OUT ABOUT 15 FEET ALONG THE SIDE OF THE FREEWAY ONLY A SECOND OR TWO AFTER GETTING OFF. I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF A 2003 TOYOTA COROLLA S WITH A MANUAL TRANSMISSION. IN NOVEMBER 2011, THE BEARINGS IN MY TRANSMISSION FAILED ON A LONG TRIP AT JUST OVER 93,000 MILES. THE FAILURE IN THE BEARINGS DESTROYED THE TRANSMISSION AND DISABLED MY CAR ON THE FREEWAY. I HAD IT TOWED TO AN AUTO SHOP WHERE I PURCHASED A BRAND NEW TRANSMISSION FROM THE LOCAL TOYOTA SERVICE CENTER. IT WAS INSTALLED, AS WELL AS A NEW CLUTCH. I REPORTED THIS INCIDENT ON YOUR WEBSITE PREVIOUSLY. THIS LAST MONTH, MY TRANSMISSION BEGAN TO GRIND GOING INTO 3RD GEAR. I BOUGHT IT IN TO MY LOCAL MECHANIC AND FOUND OUT THE TRANSMISSION IS FAILING. IT WILL EITHER NEED TO BE REBUILT OR REPLACED. THE TRANSMISSION IS NOT EVEN 3 YEARS OLD AND HAS JUST ABOUT 21,000 MILES ON IT. TOYOTA WILL NOT WARRANTY IT. THEIR COVERAGE IS FOR ONE YEAR, UNLIMITED MILEAGE. A NEW CAR WITH A NEW TRANSMISSION IS COVERED FOR 5 YEARS/60,000 MILES. THERE IS NO REASON THIS TRANSMISSION SHOULD HAVE FAILED. I TAKE EXCELLENT CARE OF MY CAR AND HAD HOPED TO DRIVE IT FOR 20+ YEARS. I HAVE HAD ROUTINE SERVICE PERFORMED ON IT AND MOSTLY DRIVE MY CAR ON LONG TRIPS AS I RIDE TO WORK MOST DAYS. A SIMPLE GOOGLE SEARCH SHOWS THAT THESE ISSUES I HAVE HAD WITH MY CAR ARE VERY COMMON FOR MY MODEL CAR WITH A MANUAL TRANSMISSION. TOYOTA WILL NOT DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT SIMPLY BECAUSE THE OVERWHELMING MAJORITY OF CARS THEY SELL IN THE US ARE AUTOMATICS SO ISSUES WITH MANUALS CAN BE IGNORED. THEY NEED TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR PRODUCING A TRANSMISSION THAT CAN'T EVEN HOLD UP TO AN INDUSTRY STANDARD WARRANTY. MANY YEARS AGO I RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE FOR THE DRIVER'S SIDE FLOOR MAT OF MY 2003 TOYOTA COROLLA. THE FIX BY TOYOTA WAS TO INSTALL FLOOR ANCHORS TO HOLD THE FLOOR MAT IN A STABLE POSITION SO IT COULD NOT SLIDE AROUND. THE FIX WORKED FOR A FEW YEARS, THEN THE ANCHORS BROKE. I PAID TOYOTA FOR NEW ANCHORS WHICH AGAIN FIXED THE PROBLEM FOR SOME TIME. RECENTLY, THE ANCHORS AGAIN FAILED AND I WILL AGAIN NEED NEW ANCHORS TO STABILIZE THE FLOOR MAT. I BOUGHT A BRAND NEW TOYOTA COROLLA 2003 MODEL IN NOV 2002. AROUND A YEAR AND A HALF AGO, IT STARTED PRODUCING AN UNUSUAL SOUND WHENEVER I HIT THE BRAKES. IT HAS SINCE PROGRESSED FROM A BARELY AUDIBLE (EXCEPT TO THE DRIVER) "KNOCKING" SOUND TO,AT SOME POINT, A VERY NERVE-WRACKING "THE CAR IS GOING TO BREAK APART" KIND OF SOUND WHENEVER THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED. I CALLED THE DEALER TO CHECK IF IT WAS A COMMON COMPLAINT AND THEY SAID THEY NEVER HEARD OF A SIMILAR CASE. AFTER THE INSPECTION, THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THEY WOULD INFORM HER OF THEIR DECISION. THE FIRESTONE DEALER WAS NOTIFIED AND REFUSED TO ASSIST HER WITH THE REPLACEMENT OF THE TIRE. ON MAY 17, 2005 I DROVE THIS CAR ON HIGHWAY AT SPEED APPROXIMATELY 55 MILES/HOURS AND SUDDENLY LOSTED CONTROL. I REDUCED SPEED, BUT COULD NOT CONTROL CAR AND IT PULLED OFF THE ROAD AND STOPPED. THIS CAR IS NOW 12 YEARS OLD WITH TWO ACTIVE RECALLS INVOLVING SRS AND AIRBAG SYSTEM. TOYOTA KEEPS MODIFYING RECALL IN WHAT APPEARS TO BE A SCHEME TO RESET THEIR "REASONABLE" TIME CLOCK. IT IS APPARENT THAT THERE ARE ENOUGH OF THE REPLACEMENT SYSTEMS TO INSTALL IN NEW CARS, YET THERE IS A CONTINUOUS DELAY IN REPAIRING THE OLDER AUTOS NOW ON THE ROAD. ATTRITION IS NOT A FIX, AND THE VALUE OF MY CAR IS DOWN WITH THE CURRENT REMEDY OF "DO NOT ALLOW ANYONE TO USE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT", AND MY SAFETY IS BEING COMPROMISED. DRIVER EXPERIENCED A SURGE IN UNCALLED FOR ACCELERATION WHILE SLOWING DOWN TO STOP FOR A TRAFFIC LIGHT. THE CAR STOPPED AFTER THIS SURGE AFTER HEAVY BRAKE APPLICATION AND BECAME NORMAL. THIS WAS NOT REPEATED FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE TRIP OF APPROXIMATELY 5 MILES.

OUR TOYOTA HAD A RECALL ON THE PASSENGER AIRBAGS. THE DEALER INSTALLED A HARNESS AND ECM. WHEN THEY RECHECKED THE SRS SYSTEM THE AIRBAG LIGHT CAME BACK ON FOR B1811 FOR SPIRAL CABLE. I WAS TOLD THAT THIS REPAIR IS NOT PART OF THE RECALL BUT THAT MY DRIVER SIDE AIRBAG IS NOT WORKING. I DID SOME RESEARCH AND FOUND THAT THE SPIRAL CABLE IS PART OF A RECALL WITH OTHER TOYOTAS BUT NOT THE SAME YEAR AS MINE. OBVIOUSLY THERE ARE PROBLEMS WITH THESE AIRBAGS AND I'M WONDERING WHY MY TOYOTA IS NOT PART OF THE RECALL? I AM VERY CONCERNED ABOUT THIS ESPECIALLY SINCE MY 17 YEAR OLD SON IS NOW DRIVING THE VEHICLE! THIS IS AN EXPENSIVE REPAIR FOR US!

THE PAPER FURTHER SUGGESTS THAT I SHOULD CHANGE BRANDS OF GASOLINE (WE HAD ALREADY TRIED THAT) OR CHANGE TO A HIGHER GRADE OF GASOLINE. THE DEALER REFUSED TO WRITE UP THE PROBLEM ON A REPORT. I CAN ATTEST, THE ROTTEN EGG ODOR DOESN'T ABATE IF 87 OCTANE FUEL IS USED - EVEN AMOCO WHICH PURPORTS TO BE BETTER THAN THE REST. SEARCHING THESE TOPICS VIA GOOGLE, I FOUND A DISCUSSION SUGGESTING THAT THE CAUSE WAS/IS A CATALYTIC CONVERTER RUNNING TOO HOT - PROBABLY DUE TO ITS PROXIMITY TO THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD. SURE ENOUGH, THIS VEHICLE HAS THE FIRST CATALYTIC CONVERTER (THERE ARE TWO, IN TANDEM) IS COUPLED DIRECTLY TO THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD. FURTHER, THERE IS NO ROOM TO MOVE THE UNIT BACK, AND, SINCE THE ENTIRE EXHAUST SYSTEM IS WELDED, ANY MODIFICATIONS TO IT WOULD PROBABLY NEGATE MY WARRANTY. MY '88 COROLLA USES THE SAME 87 OCTANE FUELS, FROM THE SAME BRANDS (THAT WE'VE TRIED ON THE '03 COROLLA) AND DOES NOT HAVE THIS PROBLEM. CONSUMERS DESERVE A BETTER PRODUCT THAN THIS. THE FIRST TIME IT HAPPENED I WAS USING THE HEATER . ON APRIL 27, 2006 MY DAD STARTED THE ENGINE TO GO TO CHURCH AND THE CAR ACCELERATED IN PARKING POSITION. CAR WAS TURNED OFF AND STARTED AGAIN, ONCE STARTED IT DROVE FINE. THE SAME DAY WHEN MY DAD WAS COMING FROM CHURCH HE STARTED THE CAR AND WHEN HE PUT IT IN DRIVE THE CAR ACCELERATED ITSELF AND ITT BOLTED OUT AND WENT OVER A PILE OF SAND THAT WAS ON THE SIDE ON THE ROAD. My mother got in the car and as soon as the car was put on drive, the car accelerated to its max potential, but when she attempted to hit the brakes they did not respond. So max acceleration, on its own, and brakes did not work. She ended up in the hospital for 9 days suffering a broken rib, front teeth missing, they had to sew her tongue back together, both cheeks shattered, broken clavicle and she has a hole right under the back of her skull. Miraculously, after she flipped to the side and took out two trees, the third tree flipped her back to right side up, and stopped the vehicle completely.

I received a recall notice, scheduled an appointment and then went to Bev Smith Toyota in Fort Pierce, FL. My appointment was for 9:30 AM. I decided that as long as I was there, I would get my oil changed (normally I do not use dealer oil changes because they are expensive, but since I was there anyway...). At 11:10, I was presented the bill for the oil change and told that they refused to service the airbag. There was some garbage on the floor of the passenger side that the service manager claimed rendered my vehicle unsafe to work on. I pointed out that no one asked me to clean out the front seat when I scheduled the appointment, that the items were there at 9:30 when received the car, and that the car apparently was safe enough for them to perform an overpriced oil change. I offered to remove the items (it later took me all of 3 minutes to clear the area). The service manager refused and refused to complete the recall work. He still demanded payment for the oil change and was unwilling to compensate me for my wasted time.

My car is accelerating when my foot is off of the pedal and when in park, it is revving like I am pressing down on the gas pedal. I put it in reverse to test it to make sure I was experiencing what I just thought had happened. As soon as I put the gear in reverse, and released my foot from the break, the car spead down my driveway. I breaked, put gear in drive, and when I released my foot from the break pedal, again it sped up almost crashing into my house. When I put the car in park, the engine became louder as if I was pressing down on the gas pedal. I checked the pedals below. The rug or nothing else was near the pedal, as can happen at times. This morning I tested it out again on my way to work. It was a repeat of yesterday. The car is speeding up without me putting my foot on the drive pedal, by me simply lifting my foot of of the break. And when I park, it gets loud as if I am pressing on the gas pedal. This is very dangerous and I am afraid to drive my car until I can get it to a mechanic.

APPARENTLY, THIS PROBLEM IS WIDESPREAD AS A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN (NHTSA #10015608) WAS ISSUED." THE TOYOTA CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE CENTER SUBSEQUENTLY ACKNOWLEDGED THE REAR WHEEL BEARINGS ISSUE ADDRESSED IN MY E-MAIL ABOVE, CREATING CASE # 1703301220. DESPITE TOYOTA HAVING ISSUED TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN #00105 ON THIS VERY MATTER, THE TOYOTA REPRESENTATIVE AT THE CUSTOMER CENTER CLEARLY STATED IN A SUBSEQUENT PHONE CALL THERE IS NO WARRANTY COVERAGE, NO CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION, AND NO-RECALL ISSUED. AFTER CONTACTING THE TOYOTA CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE CENTER, I WAS RELUCTANT TO REPLACE THE REAR WHEEL BEARINGS FOR ALMOST $1,000.00 IF THE ONLY ISSUE WAS WITH HUMMING WHICH BLENDED IN WITH NORMAL ROAD NOISE. BUT THE MECHANICS AT THE LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIPS SUBSEQUENTLY WARNED ME THAT FAILURE TO HAVE THE REAR WHEEL BEARINGS REPLACED MEANT I WAS DRIVING A CAR WITH A SERIOUS SAFETY HAZARD WITH A SIGNIFICANT PROBABILITY OF WHEEL FAILURE (I.E. THE BEARING(S) COULD COMPLETELY FAIL AT ANY TIME AND CAUSE THE REAR WHEEL TO FALL OFF THE CAR). I THEN AUTHORIZED THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP IN APRIL 2017 TO REPLACE THE WHEEL BEARINGS (AT MY EXPENSE). ONE CANNOT BUT WONDER HOW MANY ACCIDENTS OR INCIDENTS IN CONNECTION WITH REAR WHEEL BEARINGS HAVE OCCURRED WITH TOYOTA COROLLAS FOR DRIVERS WHO UNKNOWINGLY DRIVE THEIR VEHICLES WITH REAR WHEEL BEARINGS THAT HAVE BEEN COMPROMISED OR FAILED.

I CALLED MY LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER WHO HAS PERFORMED RECALLS IN THE PAST ON MY VEHICLE TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT. ON JUNE 13TH, 2016 I SPOKE TO A REP AND WAS INFORMED THAT THEY WERE OUT OF PARTS AND WOULD CALL ME WHEN THE PARTS WERE IN, APPROX 4-6 WEEKS. ON JULY 13TH, 2016 I PLACED A FOLLOW UP CALL AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE PARTS WERE STILL NOT IN AND THEY WOULD CALL ME IN APPROXIMATELY 6-8 WEEKS. TWO DAYS LATER A HIT AND RUN DRIVER FORCED VEH TO SKID ACROSS FIVE LANES ON INTERSTATE 10 IN ONTARIO, CA, AND LANDED ATOP CENTER DIVIDER. THE VEHICLE WAS SENT TO REPAIR SHOP AND "REPAIRED" AFTER APPROXIMATELY 5-8 MONTHS. HOWEVER, THE CAR WAS NEVER PROPERLY REPAIRED, AND I COMPLAINED TO BOTH TOYOTA , AND TO THE INSURANCE COMPANY, ALLSTATE, BUT TOYOTA ADAMANTLY STATED THE VEH WAS WITHOUT PROBLEMS. THE CAR WAS CONTINUALLY IN THE SHOP FOR THE BRAKES. EVENTUALLY THE CARPET CAUSED THE ACCELERATOR TO BECOME STUCK AND THE CAR WENT OUT OF CONTROL. I WAS FORCED TO REACH DOWN WHILE THE CAR MOVING AND PULL THE CARPET WITH BOTH HANDS TO RELEASE THE ACCELERATOR. STEPPING ON THE BRAKES DID NOT HELP. NEITHER TOYOTA REPAIR NOR ALLSTATE WOULD HELP RESOLVE OUR COMPLAINTS SINCE 2003, WE WERE SIMPLY TOLD THAT THE VEH WAS FINE. ADDITIONALLY I BELIEVE THE FRAME IS BENT, LACK OF INTERLOCKING BRAKES CAUSING SKIDS, BRAKES ARE SOFT AND DROP TO FLOOR, AND POOR STEERING COLUMN. I OWN AN '03 TOYOTA COROLLA WHICH I PURCHASED NEW. AT THE 45,000 MILE MARK MY REAR SUSPENSION COLLAPSED WHILE DRIVING AT 20MPH ON A NEWLY PAVED CITY STREET - THERE WERE NO POTHOLES OR OBSTRUCTIONS. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT AT MY TOYOTA DEALERSHIP ATTRIBUTED THE FAILURE TO BE "CLIMATE BUT NO EXCUSES." THE REAR SUSPENSION HAD "ROTTED" (RUSTED) OUT. THEY ALSO SAID THAT THIS WAS NOT ALL COMMON. I JUST SPOKE TO A TOYOTA MECHANIC WITH 20 YEARS EXPERIENCE - HE HAS NEVER SEEN THIS PROBLEM BUT SAID IT WAS POSSIBLE. HE ALSO QUESTIONED WHETHER THE UNDERBODY HAD BEEN PROPERLY TREATED ON THE ASSEMBLY LINE. HE WOULD NOT EXPECT THIS TO HAPPEN IN SUCH A YOUNG CAR - MORE LIKELY WITH A 10 YEAR OLD CAR. INTERIOR DOOR HANDLES ARE PLATED WITH A CHROME METALLIC PLATING. METAL PLATING IS POORLY ATTACHED AND STARTS FLAKING OFF OF PLASTIC DOOR HANDLE. WHEN METAL PLATING STARTS PEELING OFF, IT IS VERY THIN AND SHARP. IT HAS RESULTED IN NUMEROUS FINGERS BEING CUT / SLICED OPEN. ONE HANDLE WAS REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY. SINCE THE WARRANTY RAN OUT, THE OTHER THREE HANDLES HAVE FLAKED AND PEELED AS WELL. IN ORDER TO "FIX" TWO OF THE HANDLES, I CUT AND SCRAPED ANY REMAINING METAL PLATING OFF OF THE HANDLES TO LEAVE ONLY THE IVORY COLORED PLASTIC HANDLE. AFTER EXPERIENCING A NOISE FROM THE REAR OF THE CAR, I BROUGHT MY 2003 TOYOTA COROLLA TO THE DEALER. ONE INTERESTING NOT, IS I NEVER HAD THE ESTIMATED GAS MILEAGE ON MY COROLLA, AND BROUGHT THIS TO THE DEALERS ATTENTION NUMEROUS TIMES. I WOULD ONLY GET 31-33 MPG ON THE HIGHWAY AND WORSE IN THE CITY. ON JANUARY 7, 2006 AT ABOUT 2:30 A.M. MY DAUGHTER, [XXX] DROVE BACK HOME TO SAN MATEO FROM SANTA CRUZ IN A TOYOTA COROLLA LE OF 2003 WITH A[XXX] AND [XXX]. AS SHE DROVE ON HIGHWAY 17 NEAR SAN JOSE SHE TRIED TO STEP ON THE FOOT BRAKE TO MAINTAIN SAFETY CONTROL AT THE SPEED LIMIT OF 35 MILES PER HOUR WHILE GOING DOWN THE WINDING SLOPE. HOWEVER THE CAR SEEMED TO HAVE NO BRAKE AND STARTED SPINNING WITH THE LEFT SIDE OF THE FRONT FIRST HIT THE CENTRAL CONCRETE DIVIDER THEN THE TAIL ALSO HIT THE DIVIDER AND THE CAR FINALLY STOPPED. NO THIRD PARTY WAS INJURED AND NO PROPERTY WAS DAMAGED WITH THE EXCEPTION THAT MY DAUGHTER GOT SOME BRUISES ON HER LEFT THIGH AND THE CAR ENDED UP WITH A TOTAL LOSS. ACCORDING TO MY RECORDS, THE CAR WAS FULLY SERVICED BY THE DEALER, TOYOTA 101 IN REDWOOD CITY JUST A COUPLE OF MONTHS AGO AND AS RECENT AS A WEEK AGO THAT I HAD THE CAR'S ENGINE BELT CHANGED ALSO BY TOYOTA 101 BEFORE THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED. IN VIEW OF THE FOREGOING I SUSPECT THAT THERE MUST BE SOME DEFECT IN THE CAR SAFETY SYSTEM INCLUDING THE AIRBAGS AND FOOT BRAKE. THE DEALER HAS STATED EACH TIME THEY ARE UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. IT ALSO HAS SUSPENSION PROBLEMS. SINCE NEW THE CAR HAS MADE UNPLEASANT CLANING AND RATTLING NOISES IN THE FRONT END. I HAVE HAD IT LOOKED AT MANY TIMES WITH NO RESOLUTION. IT FEELS UNSTABLE IN WINDY CONDITIONS AND UN EVEN SURFACES. I'VE ACTUALLY THOUGHT I HAD A FLAT TIRE BECAUSE OF THE CAR SWAYING SO BADLY IN THE WIND AND ON UNEVEN SURFACES. I'VE OWNED MANY SMALL CARS BEFORE AND EVEN AN OLDER COROLLA SO I'M AWARE OF WHAT IS NORMAL. IT HAS DEFINITE SUPSENSION PROBLEMS. I HONESTLY FEEL IT'S DANGEROUS FOR MYSELF AND OTHERS DUE TO THE SUSPENSION. I NEED HELP. THERE ARE OTHER PROBLEMS WITH THIS CAR AS WELL. IT'S A TRUE LEMON.

MY 2003 TOYOTA COROLLA WHICH WAS BOUGHT BRAND NEW IN MAY OF 2002 HAS HAD SEVERAL DASHBOARD AND RADIO ISSUES. TWO MONTHS AFTER PURCHASE THE WHOLE DASHBOARD NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. AFTERWHICH MY RADIO NO LONGER WAS FLUSH WITH DASH, THE DEALER ATTEMPTED TO FIX SEVERAL TIMES TO NO AVAIL CONTACTED TOYOTA DIRECTLY, THEY SENT A MANFACTURING REP WHOM FIXED THE RADIO HOWEVER CREATED A BIGGER GAP B/W RADIO AND REST OF CONSOLE. TOYOTA IS CONSIDERING THIS A MANUFACTURING DESIGN NOT A DEFECT. WAS TOLD WOULD "ROB PETER TO PAY PAUL" IN ORDER TO FIX. NOW DASH IS FALLING APART AGAIN AS WELL AS THE REST OF THE FRONT CONSOLE. CONSUMER STATED HAD PROBLEM WITH DRIVER'S SIDE SUN VISOR. DUE TO ITS LOCATION AND/OR DESIGN THE VISOR MOVED THE REAR VIEW MIRROR FROM THE ADJUSTED POSITION WHENEVER MOVED. CONSUMER CAN NOT PROPERLY ADJUST REAR VIEW MIRROR WHEN VISOR IS DOWN. TS CONSUMER STATED THAT THE DAY TIME RUNNING LIGHTS CANNOT BE TURNED OFF WHICH IS REQUIRED BY LAW WHEN BOARDING OR DEBARKING THE WASHINGTON STATE FERRY.
