On 11/24/25 I gave permission to my friend to drive my 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander SUV from my house to Newark international airport, while my friend was driving my 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander SUV on a New Jersey Turnpike , the vehicle suddenly dropped the speed and within moments caught fire. I live in Pennsylvania, but the incident occurred on New Jersey Turnpike . The fire started while the car was in motion, creating a serious safety hazard. The vehicle was properly maintained, and no prior warning lights or issues were noted before the incident. I have done vehicle inspections/ service this month, and they told everything is perfect. This poses a severe risk to driver and passenger safety, and I am reporting it for investigation. Whole car got burned out within 5-10 mins only

“Apple CarPlay Escape” is not available through software update for this vehicle although other cars of the same model year and 2025 models have this option to quickly navigate between Apple CarPlay screen and Toyota settings screen. As a result, More swipes/touches are needed on the screen to navigate which is unsafe and distracting while driving

Sometimes, about 50/50 now, when I stop at a light or a stop sign then try to go, my car refuses to go. Pressing the gas won’t make it go. I just sit there idling or worse, in the middle of oncoming traffic. The lights still work, everything else seems to work. This does this with or without the ac in. It almost jerks you around, but won’t go. This has happened multiple times now.

The vehicle’s design leaves the condenser completely exposed, with no protective barrier in place. As a result, even a small rock can easily pass through the front grille and cause significant damage. That’s exactly what I’m currently experiencing, and unfortunately, Toyota has refused to cover the repair costs. What’s more concerning is that I’m far from the only one — many other owners are dealing with the exact same issue. It’s clear that Toyota needs to take responsibility and implement a proper solution to protect the condenser moving forward.

After driving over 15k miles in approximately one year, my 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid fuel tank has never been filled with more than 12 gallons of gas, even when the Low Fuel light is on and the miles to empty are less than 10. The MPG for individual trips can be as low as 10.3 MPG; the overall average MPG has been 21 MPG or less. The advertised fuel tank size is 17 gallons and the MPG is 26/27. The Toyota dealership said that there are 3-5 gallons remaining in the tank when there are as few as 5 miles to empty. Actual miles to a tank are around 280-300 when driven in Eco mode; advertised is 450 miles when driven normally. Inaccurate fuel level sensing is a safety issue. 10.3 MPG for a Hybrid that is advertised to get 27 MPG is false advertising. This is a known issue since at least November 2023, as evidenced by the Manufacturer Communication Tech Tip T-TT-0742-23 on NHTSA.GOV.
Mar 05, 2025
Since we purchased the 2024 Grand Highlander Hybrid Limited in April 2024, there has been an issue filling the fuel tank completely when the vehicle is on empty. The stated fuel tank capacity from the owner’s manual is 17.8 gal, however the maximum amount of fuel that can be pumped into the tank using auto fill at the gas station is 12 gal before the pump “kicks off”. After this, the fuel gauge on the dash reads full, however fuel range shown is 330 mi (at 30 mpg average gas mileage) when it should be closer to 500 mi with specified fuel tank capacity of 17 gal and 30 mpg. Shortly after filling the fuel tank, the fuel gauge and range will quickly decrease while driving. From researching and reading dozens of online forums about this issue, I tested filling the tank manually at the pump, extremely slowly, not using the auto fill lever. Two times doing this test, I was able to pump 14.5 gal into the tank before the pump “kicked off”. After these fill ups, the fuel gauge showed full and did not quickly decrease when driving. Also, the range now showed 450+ mi remaining. Both times after what appears to be an actual full tank fill up, the vehicle recorded over 400 miles before the fuel low light turned on, while previous max miles was in 300 range. It seems as if the fuel tank design does not allow the fuel to enter and settle in the tank quickly enough when filling, causing the pump to “kick off” prematurely and not actually fill up the tank. This issue causes the vehicle to not reach the full mileage range with advertised MPG and tank capacity, causing more frequent and inconvenient trips to the gas station. We have taken the vehicle to a Toyota Service center and they documented the issue but were told by Toyota Corporate that they do not have a fix for it at this time. Tech Tip T-TT-0742-23 exists on NHTSA.GOV website related to this issue from November 2023.

This vehicle is supposed to have a 17.8 gallon tank but each time at fill up when the vehicle is on empty you can only put about 13.5 to 14 gallon of gas in the tank. Several owners are experiencing the same issues. Toyota Dealerships are aware and no action is being taken to resolve this issue. The mileage to empty is not aligning with the amount per gallon as advertised per TOYOTA manufacturer.
Feb 03, 2025
Vehicle does fill gas tank to capacity of 17.2 gallons. It only fills about 12 gallons. It has a 2.6 gallon reserve so only fills about 14.5-15 gallons. The reserve is not included in range est on dash. Vehicle gets 230-270 miles per tank. You have to pull gas nozzle half way out to even get this 12.9 gallons - gas almost overflows to get this done. If your est millage left is 44 miles you can only get about 10 gallons in. The gas overflowing when trying to get more gas in the car is common. Many complaints online. This is a safety issue and known by Toyota and dealerships.

When accelerating from a complete stop, the vehicle intermittently fails to respond when pressing the gas pedal. It feels similar to when a bicycle chain slips—you press the pedal, but the vehicle doesn’t move forward—then suddenly it catches, causing a noticeable lurch. The duration of this lag varies, and it has been increasing over time. Most recently, the hesitation lasted long enough that I was nearly involved in a collision. I pulled out from a stop sign to make a right-hand turn, but the vehicle failed to accelerate as expected. The car behind me nearly rear-ended me due to my sudden lack of movement in the lane. No warning lights, error messages, or other indicators appear before or during the event. I have been reporting this issue to my dealership for over a year during regular service appointments. The dealership has been unable to reproduce the problem and has attempted a software update, which did not resolve it. The malfunction has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, or insurance representatives. The issue has occurred multiple times, including but not limited to the following dates: -March 12, 2025 -March 24, 2025 -July 21, 2025 -September 18, 2025 -October 1, 2025 These dates reflect times when I documented the issue via text messages to my husband; it has also occurred on many additional occasions not recorded above. Online owner forums and NHTSA complaints indicate that other Toyota Grand Highlander owners are experiencing the same issue, suggesting it may be a widespread defect affecting vehicle safety.

My car makes a click sound when turning the wheel left or right and gas is applied. This has been happening for around 5 months. It’s not noted all the time but I do hear it occasionally. I have a DashCam video with sound as proof, but this website is not letting me upload the video as its file size is too big. I have taken to the dealership to inspect but they said they were not able to reproduce the sound while inspecting. They also mentioned Grand Highlander have some sort of front axle issue. I looked online and NHTSA website and found that Toyota is aware of this issue and resigned it. But i don’t think the issue is fixed yet, something is still wrong with it. Please look into this matter as it concerns the safety of my family and others who owns the car.

The contact owns a 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle suddenly lost motive power. However, upon releasing, and then reapplying pressure to the accelerator pedal, the vehicle returned to normal functionality. Afterward, a message was displayed indicating that both the accelerator and brake pedals were being depressed simultaneously. The contact also stated that later, after dropping his son off for school, the seat belt warning light illuminated indicating that a passenger was not wearing a seat belt though all passenger seats were unoccupied; during this time, the radio failed to function, prompting him to restart the vehicle. After restarting the vehicle, the vehicle returned to normal functionality, but the failure became a regular occurrence. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 4,000.

Specifically the model: 2024 Grand Highlander Hybrid Max. immediately new off the dealer lot when driving between 0-40mph, there is a transmission issue. In real life situation of stop and go, and needing to accelerate after making a right turn out of a driveway or stop sign on to flowing traffic, often times it feels as if the gear is shifting too high or skipping causing the car to lose power/ rpm and the vehicle chugs, before skipping back to the correct gearing and accelarating. I'm not sure how to describe it but I feel it is a safety risk especially if there are cars coming behind you. I have taken this into Hamer Toyota 2 times, but they can't seem to recreate the issue. However, my wife goes through this almost every day during her commute to and from work. Imagine driving a manual transmission and accelerating on 1st or 2nd gear, and all of a sudden the gear shifts to 4th or 5th gear, causing loss of power or rpm and due to natural instinct of depressing the accelerator further for power and the gear now shifting back and clutching grabbing at 1st or 2nd gear with the accelerator depressed further down than the beginning. This causes a jerking motion of our body in the car, because the car loses power, the all of sudden jerks back into power. I have attached URLs to people complaining about this besides myself. I'm seeing that toyota released a TBS to update software, but it seems its not readily available every time I call, or they need to recreate this before anything is done. I think this is a big safety concern and eventually cause accidents by getting rear ended. I'm sure other drivers think we can't drive because of not being able to speed up then rocketing forward. help! *Acceleration lag from a stop On June 21, 2025 - 92 degrees outside leaving store, I was making a left turn from a parking lot. I took my foot off the brake to creep forward which the vehicle did, but as I pressed the gas the car would not accelerate. I was stuck in the middle of the lanes with my car coasting. Fortunately it was a quiet street and the car coming from behind me had ample time to stop until i could coast my car to the side of the road which then it revved high and engaged. It felt like the car was in neutral but it was in drive. It lasted about 5 seconds. *It would not accelerate which was scary and very dangerous for obvious reasons. * I took the car to the dealership on the next business day and unfortunately cannot have it inspected until July 15, 2025. *No warning lamps, messages or other symptoms. *My car is available for inspection. That would be great! That’s why I brought it to the dealer but they were booked. *It happened only once, but I haven’t driven it much since the incident. I am now driving my 20 yr old, reliable MDX until I can get it inspected on July 15th

Engine failed to engage while trying to pull out of my neighborhood this morning. The electric motor starts and propels the car forward into the road, but the gas motor fails to engage leaving me in the middle of the road without the ability to maneuver. This is a recurring problem. The dealer is aware of it and I have made reports here before. Just documenting each time until Toyota cooperates and helps find a solution. The car does not display any error codes. When I call the dealership to tell them and hopefully go in to have them run a diagnostic they consistently fail to get back to me or downplay my concerns.

Car failed to accelerate when pulling into traffic on 5 lane road. Dealer completed a software update on 9/17 they thought would remedy the issue (which is ongoing) but it apparently did not. Vehicle gives no warning lights, error messages, etc. Just does not accelerate from a complete stop for 4-5 seconds.
Sep 18, 2024
Car will not accelerate immediately from a stop; seems to happen more often when on a slight incline. This poses a safety issue when pulling out onto any road. I have asked multiple times at the dealer about and been told they cannot do anything about it unless the car gives a code. They also say it will not reproduce for them, although every time I pull out of their service location (with a slight incline) it stalls out and will not engage immediately for me.

Subject: NHTSA Complaint - 2024 Grand Highlander Hybrid XLE Rear Windshield Shattering To Whom It May Concern, I am writing to formally file a complaint regarding a concerning incident with my recently purchased 2024 Grand Highlander Hybrid XLE. On [XXX], 2024, the rear windshield/liftgate glass spontaneously shattered without any apparent cause. The vehicle was merely six months old at the time of the incident. This unexpected and potentially hazardous occurrence has prompted me to investigate further, and I have come across multiple reports online from other customers who have experienced similar issues with the same rear windshield/liftgate glass on this specific vehicle model. This pattern of incidents raises significant concerns about a potential manufacturer's defect that may compromise the safety and reliability of these vehicles. Given the frequency of such occurrences and the potential safety implications involved, I am urging the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to investigate this matter thoroughly. It is imperative to identify any underlying issues or defects that may be contributing to these incidents to ensure the safety of consumers and prevent any potential accidents or injuries in the future. Please consider this complaint as an urgent matter, and I implore the NHTSA to take appropriate action to address this issue promptly. Your attention to this matter is greatly appreciated, and I look forward to a swift and comprehensive investigation into this concerning issue. Sincerely, [XXX] [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

There is a serious vibration or bouncing of the hood that is very distracting while driving once the vehicle is moving 40 mph or more. My guess is that the metal is too thin or not well bracketed causing it to flutter or vibrate from airflow over the hood. I also experienced the hood denting in from a strong wind gust that made a very loud bang or pop making me think the hood was about to blow off and had to immediately pull over to examine but nothing seemed to be wrong. It just must have dented in and out again. Seems very dangerous. It flutters every time you drive the vehicle above certain speeds and causes the sunlight to flicker in your face which is very distracting. It is evident with every road test.
Mar 01, 2024
The rear portion of the hood, closest to the windshield vibrates or flutters at speeds above 30 MPH. At speeds above 50 MPH the flutter becomes very noticeable and actually reflects sunlight into the driver's field of vision. I had personally been blinded by this for several seconds - a very dangerous situation on a busy interstate highway. Fortunately the vehicle's lane keeping assist kept me in the lane but I otherwise could very easily have swerved into another car or rear-ended a stopped vehicle. I have taken this vehicle to my local dealer and a technician reproduced the problem very easily. I was told by the service manager, however, that this is a normal condition for this vehicle and suggested I contact Toyota.
Feb 23, 2024
The entire proximal portion of the hood closest to the windshield vibrates above 50 mph. Windy conditions make this worse. The glare on the hood will vibrate distracting the driver. I have reported this to Toyota and they do not care to acknowledge it as a problem. There are forums of new honors of the Grand Highlander complaining. My dealership could reproduce the problem and said there is no fix.

I am filing a complaint regarding a safety recall on my Toyota vehicle. Toyota issued the recall notice on September 11, 2025, but as of today there is still no available remedy. Due to this recall, my vehicle has been deemed unsafe and undriveable and has been out of service since October 8, 2025. While a rental vehicle has been provided, I have been without my own car for several months with no clear timeline or resolution. I am concerned about the extended delay in providing a recall remedy for a safety-related defect and the lack of transparency regarding next steps. I am requesting that NHTSA review Toyota’s handling of this recall, including the prolonged lack of a remedy and the impact on vehicle owners. I believe this delay is unreasonable and warrants further oversight.

Toyota provides the ability to use a phone for a key. Only one key was provided due to chip shortages. My phone has been registered as a key. I left my home with only my phone. Upon coming out of the store my phone would not open the door after trying numerous fixes including calling Toyota. My wife unlocked the car remotely via satellite. Trying for 20 minutes with Toyota we could not get the vehicle to recognize my phone. My wife had to drive the only set of keys to my location. The vehicle still wouldn't start until I unlocked the vehicle with the FOB. Had this issue occured in a remote area without cell service I would have been locked out of my vehicle with no way to call for help.

My car is a 2024 Grand Highlander I bought in May of last year. It currently has 20,000 miles on it. A few weeks ago I started hearing a knocking sound when I turned left or right. I looked at some Toyota forums and found that other people were having this issue and had to have both front axles replaced. I took my car to Toyota and sure enough, they said the parts they used to assemble the car were not machined properly and they replaced both of my front axles. Having said that, I have 2 issues. One, why hasn't a recall been issued on this. It seems as though quite a bit of people have had this problem and this is a big safety issue. There have been 2 other recalls, one about the screen going blank and airbags, but to me, axle is a much bigger safety issue, so why no recall on this? Also, the technician recommends an alignment after chaning the axles which I am expected to pay $150 for but this should be included since my axles should not need changing at 20,000 miles. They consider alignment normal wear and tear and not under warranty which I would normally agree with but I only need an aligmnent because they changed my axles.

I've had consistent issues with the vehicle accelerating and shifting. These include sluggish acceleration, loss of power, sputtering, and limp mode. We've almost been hit by other vehicles almost 10 times because the vehicle has failed to accelerate when pulling into a roadway. The vehicle will start to accelerate slowly, then stop, then 5-10 seconds later will surge forward will the engine revs very high and is delayed shifting into 2nd gear. I've told my Toyota dealership about this numerous times but they keep telling me that there's no issue but there clearly is being that many others are experiencing the same exact problems. There's never been a warning lamp or message when this happens. This is a huge safety issue and my family is extremely lucky that we haven't been involved in a serious accident.

On high-temperature days, when the A/C is running at full capacity, the vehicle occasionally fails to accelerate from a stop. This issue persists even after applying the recommended ECM update. The lack of reliable acceleration poses a significant safety risk, particularly when turning across oncoming traffic or entering a busy street. This situation can leave the vehicle stalled in the path of approaching vehicles, increasing the likelihood of an accident.

Ever since I got my car, sometimes it smells like gas on the right side of the vehicle. By driver side and right passenger side in the back. I assumed it was because I topped my gas off, but even when I stopped doing that, it still has a strong gas smell when the car is running and after turning it off. Not ever day, but ever so often.

Shortly after starting my vehicle and driving out of my neighborhood, there are a series of stop signs. The roadway is at a slight incline. When attempting to press the gas pedal after stopping at the first stop sign, my vehicle hesitates or does not accelerate. This lasts anywhere from 1-5 seconds. This occasionally also occurs again at the second stop sign a few hundred yards later as well. The best I can describe this is as an unresponsive gas pedal or limp mode. I cannot stress how incredibly dangerous this issue is. Someone is going to get seriously injured or killed if this isn’t acknowledged by Toyota or NHTSA. All it takes is for this to occur when someone is making a right hand turn into a roadway. I am fully aware that this is not an isolated incident with my vehicle and other vehicle owners of Toyota Hybrid Max Platinums report this same issue.

Several times per week, when I go to accelerate after being at a complete stop, my vehicle hesitates and does not pick up power. It very slowly accelerates and feels as if it’s going to stall, then suddenly revs up and accelerates, but revs up higher than it should before finally getting to the appropriate speed/rpm. This is very unsafe as I cannot pull out into traffic, even if I should have time, because I don’t know if it is going to accelerate or not. One of these days I am going to get T-boned! I took it to the dealership and they did a software update that was supposed to fix the issue, but it did not. The issue still happens several times per week. There are no warning lights on the dash. The dealership did not run a diagnostic because they told me I would have to pay for it if no codes came up. I’m not willing to do that, as I feel since the vehicle is under warranty and having issues, the diagnostic should not be my responsibility to pay for. I cannot say a specific date when it occurred (below) because it occurs often.

Cabin boom noise reported from the first day of ownership whenever driving the vehicle under 50mph. Noise is a low bass frequency below 30hz that reverberates throughout entire vehicle, causing severe ear pain, headaches, nausea, and disorientation. The only way to tolerate driving this vehicle is to wear airplane pressure earplugs, which poses a safety concern for not being able to hear surroundings while driving. The cabin boom seems to be coming from the suspension. Dealership foreman and corporate field tech looked at vehicle and denied any problem, stating this was “normal for this new vehicle” and refused to investigate or try any diagnostics. The cabin boom sound is recorded on video, and is such a low frequency you must use noise canceling headphones to hear it on video (confirmed by professional audio engineer). This sound/pressure can be heard and felt by other people in the car, unless they already have low frequency hearing loss. This problem creates physical illness and is a huge safety concern for this brand new model Grand Highlander. Dozens of people are reporting the same problem on Toyota forums as well for their new Grand Highlanders.

I have a brand new Grand Highlander Limited with a Panoramic roof, and since the day I took it home, I have noticed a deep bass sound and ear pressure/cabin pressure when driving below 40mph on residential roads. It is very low-frequency and causes headaches, ear pain, and ringing after driving the car. I have taken it to 2 separate dealerships for diagnostic, and they agree they hear the sound and feel the cabin pressure but state it is the vehicle's design. However, most owners aren't experiencing the same issue, so it's not a feature but more of a flaw in some of them.
Mar 13, 2024
Reverberation noise, also commonly referred to by other owners as “boom or acoustic boom.” The entire cabin vibrates as if a shock wave is being sent through it. Mostly occurred when hitting small to large bumps under 45 mph and also happens often while breaking (even on flat and smooth pavement). On highway over 50mph there is a constant pressure within the cabin that significantly effects the ears and makes me nauseous and gives me a dazed-like feeling. Every person that has been in my vehicle has asked me what was wrong with it. A Toyota service tech told me they didn’t find anything wrong with it, but I still can’t drive it for more than 20 minutes without feeling sick. Please help.

VISIBILITY
2 complaints
My Toyota Grand Highlander develops severe interior window fogging and condensation, affecting the windshield, front side windows, and occasionally rear windows. This occurs during normal driving, especially in cool or humid conditions. The fogging appears rapidly, and the HVAC/defrost system often fails to clear the windows effectively, even when set to full defrost with outside air intake. Interior moisture buildup is excessive compared to other vehicles I’ve owned, and the issue repeats regularly. This creates a significant visibility hazard, forcing me to adjust climate controls constantly while driving or pull over to clear the glass manually.

I bought this car brand new three weeks ago from a Toyota dealership.and there are all kinds of distortions in the glass on the windshield of the vehicle. There are all kinds of wavy distortions on the glass on the windshield. With the windshield glass, not being clear, it makes me concerned about the safety features not working properly. These distortions makes it difficult to drive the vehicle because it’s not clear and is distracting. The glass is acoustic heated glass made by Pilkington.

My car accelerated very fast as I was attempting to pull into a parking spot. At first attempt brake did not work. Was able to avoid an accident. No sensors went off. Best described as an out of control amusement ride.
Sep 28, 2025
Description of Issue: I have experienced repeated incidents where the accelerator pedal becomes unresponsive (“dead pedal”) after coming to a stop. When pressing the pedal to accelerate, the vehicle does not respond at all for several seconds. Then, without warning, it suddenly surges forward with excessive acceleration once the power engages. This problem happens intermittently throughout a drive each day, often enough to be concerning. It occurs after being stopped at an intersection or in traffic. No warning lights or error messages appear before or during the issue. The delay followed by a sudden surge is dangerous, as I expect the car to move when I press the pedal, but it hesitates instead. When the vehicle finally responds, it accelerates quickly, which could cause me to lose control or collide with another vehicle. Safety Concern: This malfunction creates a significant safety risk. It puts myself, passengers, and other drivers in danger when the vehicle fails to accelerate as expected in high-risk scenarios such as crossing intersections, merging into traffic, or making left turns. The hesitation can leave the vehicle exposed in traffic, and the sudden lurch forward can cause unintended movement or rear-end collisions. Status: The problem has occurred multiple times under similar conditions and is ongoing. It has not yet been inspected or confirmed by a dealer or service center, but I have an apt Aug 24th. However, the malfunction is real, reproducible, and presents a serious hazard that could lead to an accident if not corrected. Many others with the same vehicle have expressed the same concern as well on forums and reported no fix after dealership appointments.

Description of Issue: We have experienced multiple episodes of violent shaking in our 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander while stopped at red lights or in intersections. Both my wife and I have had this happen independently, around two to three times each. Most incidents occurred while our young children were in the vehicle. The most recent incident occurred today, when my wife experienced it twice in a row while stopped at an intersection. Our children were not in the vehicle during today’s event. Component or system involved: UNKNOWN at this time. We suspect a major mechanical or drivetrain-related failure. The entire vehicle shakes violently and feels unstable. We are willing to make the vehicle available for inspection upon request. Safety risk: The severity of the shaking is extreme and it feels as though the car may explode or fall apart. We have had to put the car in park, shut it off immediately, and in some cases, exit the vehicle in the middle of intersections or while stopped at a red light. This places everyone in the vehicle at serious risk, especially our children, and could result in a crash or secondary accident due to the abrupt stop and unexpected behavior in active traffic. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or service center? The issue has not yet been reproduced by the dealership. We brought the vehicle to Toyota of Escondido after a previous incident. They inspected it but stated they could not find anything wrong. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by others? The vehicle was only inspected by the dealership (Toyota of Escondido). It has not been reviewed by any other parties such as law enforcement or insurance representatives. Warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms prior to the issue: There were no warning lights, error messages, or abnormal behavior prior to the onset of the violent shaking. The issue occurred suddenly each time, without warning.
Aug 01, 2025
Intermittently, my vehicle will hesitate to accelerate or will move only marginally (disproportionately to the depressing of the gas pedal) from a complete stop. When it occurs, it often does so for a number of seconds. This has been incredibly dangerous given I live off a busy street and I cannot trust that when I press the gas pedal to accelerate to turn onto the street, that my vehicle will be caught in oncoming traffic and hit.

I was informed by my Toyota dealership and received a written letter from Toyota dated March 25, 2025, that the curtain airbag recall on my 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander had been completed. However, during a scheduled maintenance visit in June 2025, I was told the airbag recall had never actually been performed and was still open. The recall was only completed at that time. I unknowingly drove the vehicle — often with my infant child — for several months, believing the airbag system was safe, based on incorrect information from Toyota. This represents a serious safety concern and a breakdown in Toyota’s recall management. The issue has now been fixed, but I am reporting this because I was misled into driving an unsafe vehicle, putting my family at risk. Toyota’s failure to properly close and track recall repairs should be investigated.

I saw that a recall was posted on my Toyota app. June 28, 2024, I called for recall repair, regular service and second key. I was advised that the recall did not have a remedy, but I needed to bring it in for regular service. Service was scheduled for July 13, 2024. At that appointment, I followed up on the recall. They advised that the recall is open but Toyota did not have a remedy, so just keep monitoring it. I called on November 5th , to check on the recall and a service campaign alert that was issued on my Toyota Application. They said for that I needed to bring it in during the week, we scheduled the recall repair for 11/12/2024. When I picked up my vehicle, I was advised that they had to order the part for the recall. They performed regular maintenance, etc. however, the recall is still open and has not been repaired.

Starting off from a stop or at low speeds the vehicle loses all power. Engine stumbles and does not respond, when it happens it almost feels like the engine may stall. Pressing the accelerator and the vehicle will not move, then suddenly will start to go seconds later. This has almost resulted in a crash since the vehicle loses all propulsion unexpectedly. No warning lights. Took to the dealer twice and everything is “normal” no codes stored.

Third row seating bottom (back side) has loose flap material end the bottom, when closing and opening the seat it’s can get stuck. It’s also possible the seat can probably even collapse while in use or in driving. The dealer tried to help but there doesn’t seem to be any solution for this from Toyota. This seems to be model wide issue as I was told by dealer. They had another one with same issue. The bottom back of the seat is literally loose flap material. The only solution was they replaced the cargo tray which was actually slightly BENT at front possibly due to seat struggling to close and opening due to faulty design. THIS IS A FAULTY DESIGN! ITS LITERALLY A LOSSE FLAP PLASTIC MATERIAL ON A SEAT BACK. The dealer told me to be careful when handling these seats bc the material can break easily and there isn’t solution from Toyota on this unless there is recall or safety notice.

Vehicle Safety Complaint — 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander My 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander has experienced multiple serious defects, including two official recalls: • 25TA08 — instrument cluster failure • 24TA09 — airbag defect This week, the instrument display failed completely, making it impossible to view speed or system warnings. I’ve been unable to work since then, causing financial hardship for my family. Earlier, I also had to replace the entire drive shaft at my own expense (~$2,500), which is highly unusual for a new vehicle. These repeated issues raise serious concerns about safety and reliability. I’ve submitted a formal complaint to Toyota Brand Engagement Center, and it has been acknowledged and assigned to a Case Manager. The dealer is still searching for a suitable loaner vehicle that meets my work requirements. Given the severity and recurrence of these defects, I request that NHTSA investigate this pattern and consider whether the vehicle qualifies for buyback or replacement under applicable consumer protection standards. • VIN: [XXX] • Mileage: 96150 miles INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Toyota T-SB-0082-24 / Rotational Clicking Noise From Front Drive Shaft Assembly ( CV JOINT) CV joint defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, especially if it fails while you are driving. An unreasonable risk is one where the potential for harm is much greater than the potential benefit of taking the risk. Driving with a compromised CV joint fits this definition because it can lead to a complete loss of vehicle control, which can result in a serious accident.

The contact stated that both cracks were approximately 5 inches long and expanding. The contact had not struck a rock or road debris for the windshield to crack. The contact had taken the vehicle to a dealer to be diagnosed and was advised by the dealer that the cracks were the result of small stones being kicked up by other vehicles. The vehicle was not repaired. Additionally, the contact had been experiencing failures of the infotainment screen going black, and the side-view mirror Blind Spot warning lights not functioning as designed. The vehicle had been taken to the same dealer several times, and the dealer resolved the issue. The contact stated that the infotainment screen failure had reoccurred. Over 1.5 years of owning my new 2024 grand Highlander platinum hybrid pro max I have had multiple incidents (6 documented now with toyota) where after coming to a complete stop I go to accelerate and the car shutters, sputters, lunges, and even looses power or goes into “limp mode”. I have been almost hit several times now by oncoming traffic because my grand Highlander completely loses power. It will not accelerate. After 5 seconds I typically hear loud groaning noises followed by two loud bangs and two violent lurches forward before my car finally regains power. No warning lights popped up on my dash any of the times my car has lost power. My dealership keeps telling me “no problem found” and that I am the only one with this issue. This is false. There are many complaints online and finally after I did not give up the dealership pulled a comprehensive RoB scan/report on my car and found multiple transmission failure codes on the transmission system/TCM. One “lack of acceleration code” was even dated two weeks before I bought my brand new grand Highlander with toyota. I received my grand Highlander with 6 miles on it. I was the first owner. My PDI “pre-delivery inspection date was one week after this transmission failure code”. When I presented this to toyota reps who finally met with me at the dealership they had nothing to say. Toyota knows about this problem and they do not know how to fix it. It is a serious safety issue and I refuse to allow someone to get hurt because Toyota will not be honest and relay this known issue. After the dealership and toyota reps told me I was the only one with this issue toyota officially released a service bulletin in March 2025 for a TCM flash reset/update to address sluggish acceleration, loss of power, and limp mode with the transmissions TCM when the hybrid systems battery is at 33% or less. My dealership installed the TCM update about 1.5 months ago and unfortunately my car has had two more instances since with loss of power.

While slowing to a stop on a slight incline (an interstate off-ramp), when almost stopped, the car started bucking as if the brake pedal was being slammed on, then released, slammed on again, then released, and repeated for maybe 2 seconds. I quickly hit the "P" (Park) button to take it out of gear and it stopped. No warning lights or anything came on and it drove perfectly fine afterwards. It felt just like the emergency braking and the car thinks you're going to hit something. It was very strong and jarring. Happened a 2nd time on April 4 in the same circumstances - driving downhill on a highway off-ramp and stopping at red light at the end of the ramp.

Check axel joint problems. Every time the car turns either way there is a loud clicking sound. This could be a big problem because it is a steering system. It has been confirmed by the dealership and part are on order. They said it is not a safety issue but I feel the steering and axle is a big component and if it fails it could result in damage of property or life. This has not been inspected by the police or insurance only the dealership confirmed it. There are also many others with this type of vehicle having this problem. Toyota has issued a STOP SALE and RECALL on the airbags in this vehicle. There is no anticipated time for resolution but rumors indicate it might be October. During this time the airbags would not deploy if you are driving with the front windows down as it affects both driver and passenger side. We bought this car with the expectation of quality and my confidence is not high given Toyota has also issued recalls on engines in the Tundra. I have contacted Toyota Customer Care, a case was created and I was directed to the dealership for any additional action or updates. The dealership has indicated that the warranty administration has not authorized loaners as there would be no reason for me to drive with my windows down. While that might be true this time of year due to extreme heat I may take the car with me to cooler climates and have the windows down. The Lane Keep Assist seems to be aggressive at times trying to get me to "stay" in my lane when I have been driving and maintaining a center position in the lane but feel it pull the steering wheel when it seems unnecessary. I am unclear if this is a defect in the software or cameras or if it could be the result of a sensor with some debris or obstruction over it (i.e. dirty windshield or bug splatter)

- Vehicle intermittently will not respond or will barely respond when accelerator is depressed from a complete stop or near (rolling) stop. I have noticed this issue mainly when A/C is on high and during hot temperatures. I reside in the Phoenix, AZ area where high temperatures have been ranging around 110-115. - This poses a safety risk when attempting to pull out onto a busy road, either turning left or right. If the gas pedal fails to respond, this could lead to a serious crash. - This issue has arisen following a recent software update that Toyota performed (under service bulletin TSB-0017-24). This update was done to correct a different issue (shifting hesitation between gears when accelerating from 0-40mph), however it seems to have negatively affected the response of the vehicle when starting up from a stop. I have not yet taken my vehicle back to Toyota with this issue, but MANY owners of the HybridMAX are experiencing this same issue as the weather temperatures have peaked. - No warning lights appear when this occurs. The problem arose shortly after I had a software update done at the dealer on June 14, 2024.

The center console display stopped working the next day I picked up my car. This display also displays the feed from the rear-view camera, which is flaky because of this issue. The center console display enters a reboot cycle; it reboots every minute, distracting me while driving. I picked up this new vehicle on Dec 15, 2023. This issue started occurring on Dec 16, 2023.

The vehicle main screen on the dash will not go past the “get started” screen without accepting Toyotas privacy agreement on their app. I cannot use the screen as it defaults to this screen each time the car starts and does not allow a menu to the feature I paid for. This is both a safety and privacy issue as I should be able to use the vehicle while not agreeing to the privacy policy and I should be able to access the screen without distraction from driving. I explained to the salesmen I did not agree with the privacy policy and have been able to navigate the vehicle without issue in my 2014 and 2021 Highlander. I contacted Toyota and there is not work around. The manufacturer will not provide a solution other than removing all my safety features, which did allow me to get past the Home Screen. I asked to return the vehicle because I cannot use it and was refused. I would like to be able to protect my privacy and be able to use the screen I paid for without offering access to cameras and other location and audio recording devises on the vehicle.
