The contact owns a 2010 Toyota Rav4. The contact stated that the vehicle was repaired under NHTSA Campaign Number: 13V383000 (Suspension) in 2015. The contact stated that in 2015 while driving at an undisclosed speed, the low tire pressure warning light illuminated. The contact took the vehicle to a tire dealer, and it was determined that the rear tires were worn and needed to be replaced. The contact replaced all four tires. The vehicle was repaired. The contact stated that in 2020 the low tire pressure and the traction control warning light illuminated. The contact had taken the vehicle to another tire dealer who diagnosed the vehicle and determined that the rear tires were worn and needed to be replaced. The contact was advised that the rear tires could not be aligned because of the rear suspension arms, that was causing the quick wear of the tires. The vehicle was repaired. The vehicle was taken to a tire dealer in 2024 and observed that the low tire pressure and traction control warning lights were illuminated. The contact stated that the vehicle was shaking while driving at various speeds prior to the warning lights being illuminated. The contact was informed that the rear tires could not be aligned due to a failure with the rear suspension arms. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure and advised the contact to take the vehicle to a dealer. The contact took the vehicle to a local dealer who aligned the front wheels, but the rear tires could not be aligned. The contact informed the dealer about NHTSA Campaign Number: 13V383000 (Suspension) and was informed that the recall had been completed. The failure mileage was approximately 86,000.

NHTSa CAMPAIGN ID 16v596000 AUG 12, 2016 Recalls supercedes 13V-383 vehicles inspected but did not have both arms replaced. Vehicles need to have both arms replaced. Recall done on vehicle (RAV4 2010) were COJ - 1/9/2013 Stevens Creek Toyota CSJ - 9/21/2014 Capitola Toyota Control Arm were not replaced at these times. My car is currently being serviced at IQ Autoworks in Campbell CA. I've been told the control arm needs replacement. Quoted $1700 to replace one control arm.

REGARDING NHTSA CAMPAIGN: 13V383000 FOR 2006-2011 TOYOTA RAV4 THE ACCEPTED REPAIR PROCEDURE FOR THE ABOVE REFERENCED NHTSA CAMPAIGN IS FLAWED. ON MY VEHICLE, THE EFFECT OF PERMANENTLY DISABLING THE REAR TOE ADJUSTMENT HAS GREATLY INCREASED MAINTENANCE AND OPERATING COSTS AND HAS POTENTIALLY DEGRADED THE SAFETY OF ALL VEHICLES OF THIS TYPE. I HAVE EXPERIENCED GREATLY ACCELERATED WEAR OF THE RUBBER SUSPENSION COMPONENTS AND TIRES RESULTING IN THE REQUIREMENT OF A COMPLETE REAR SUSPENSION REBUILD. MY CONCERN IS THAT OTHER VEHICLES OF THIS TYPE THAT ARE NOT MAINTAINED TO STANDARDS DUE TO COST, OR HAVE HAD THE RECALL REVERSED TO MITIGATE THE FINANCIAL IMPACT, AS I HAVE DONE, ARE OPERATING IN A POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS CONDITION. IN EFFECT THIS CAMPAIGN HAS CREATED A COST BARRIER TO PROPER MAINTENANCE OF CRITICAL SAFETY SYSTEMS. I HAVE SPOKEN WITH TOYOTA CORPORATE, AND THEY HAVE NO INTEREST IN INVESTIGATING, REVISITING OR OFFERING OTHER SOLUTIONS TO THIS ISSUE AS THE RECALL REPAIR PROCEDURE WAS QUOTE "APPROVED BY THE GOVERNMENT".

REAR SUSPENSION FIX OF PREVIOUS RECALL WILL NOT ALLOW REAR ALIGNMENT OF VEHICLE BECAUSE OF THE EPOXY ENCASEMENT. THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE. JUST SPENT 800.00 ON TIRES AND ALIGNMENT ONLY TO FIND OUT THE REAR IS OUT OF ALIGNMENT AND CAN'T BE ALIGNED DUE TO TOYOTA'S FIX (EPOXY ENCASEMENT).

YESTERDAY MY CAR DROVE PERFECTLY FINE. TODAY, I AM PULLING OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY TRYING TO ACCELERATE, THERE WAS A DELAYED REACTION, THEN A THUD AND THE CAR JUMPED FORWARD AT THE TIME OF THE THUD. IT DID IT AGAIN WHEN I PULLED INTO A PARKING SPACE, PROPELLING THE VEHICLE FORWARD SUDDENTLY AFTER THE THUD WAS HEARD AGAIN. WHEN I PUT IT IN REVERSE, THE THUD WAS HEARD AGAIN, NOT AS LOUD. ALL OF MY DRIVING WAS ON CITY STREETS, BUT DUE TO THE SUDDEN LERCHING FORWARD AFTER THE THUD SOUND, I KEPT A VERY WISE DISTANCE FROM VEHICLES IN FRONT OF ME. THIS HAPPENED BOTH IN STATIONARY AND ALSO WHILE IN MOTION. IT FEELS LIKE A TRANSMISSION PROBLEM, ALTHOUGH I HAVE READ ABOUT ISSUES WITH ECM SOLENOIDS. THIS CAR HAS RECORD OF BEING SERVICED ON A VERY REGULAR BASIS. IT HAS ABOUT 148K MILES ON IT.

WHINING SOUND, POSSIBLY TRANSMISSION. THE SOUND HAPPENS WHEN I ACCELERATE OR MAINTAIN A CERTAIN SPEED (25-45 MPH). WHEN I REMOVE MY FOOT OFF THE PEDAL THE SOUND GOES AWAY SO IT'S ONLY TEMPORARY. THE VEHICLE JERKS VISCIOUSLY WHEN SHIFTING. THIS OCCURS WHEN DRIVING UP A HILL AND THE TRANSMISSION DOWN SHIFTS FROM 3RD TO 2ND OR WHEN ACCELERATING FROM 1ST TO 2ND WHEN TURNING A CORNER OR WHEN GOING IN REVERSE WHILE TRAVERSING UP ANY TYPE OF IN LINE. THIS IS A SPORADIC PROBLEM THAT BEGAN OCCURRING AT AROUND 93,000 MILES. THE VEHICLE NOW HAS 128,000. I INITIALLY THOUGHT THAT THE TRANSMISSION WAS FAILING BUT I THOUGHT THE MILEAGE WAS WAY TOO LOW FOR THAT TYPE OF PROBLEM TO OCCUR. I HAD THE TRANSMISSION FLUID CHANGED AT 94,000 MILES. THIS ACTION MADE NO DIFFERENCE. RECENTLY I BEGAN RESEARCHING ON THE WEB AND HAVE FOUND INFORMATION POINTING TO THE ECM (ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE). EITHER SOLUTION IS AN EXTREMELY COSTLY REPAIR. I AM INTERESTED TO KNOW IF THERE ARE OTHER PEOPLE WHO ARE EXPERIENCING SIMILAR PROBLEMS AND IF TOYOTA HAS ANY RESPONSIBILITY FOR REPAIRS?

I was operating the vehicle on 09/25/2021 and at approximately 9:45am, the car accelerated quickly causing me to lose control of the vehicle and crash into a guard rail. I was driving about 35-40 miles per hour and the vehicle took off out of no where and the car wouldn't brake. It was extremely frightful and I am lucky that the guard rail was in place, otherwise the vehicle would of flipped over or worse.

SIDE CURTAIN AIRBAGS SPONTANEOUSLY DEPLOYED WHILE VEHICLE WAS BEING BACKED OUT OF A MECHANIC'S GARAGE AFTER ROUTINE BRAKE MAINTENANCE WAS PERFORMED. THERE WAS NO IMPACT PRIOR TO THE DEPLOYMENT. THANKFULLY NO ONE WAS INJURED, BUT IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A DIFFERENT STORY IF MY WIFE AND KIDS WERE IN THE CAR AND DRIVING WHILE THIS OCCURRED. AS OF THIS WRITING, I HAVE OPENED A CASE WITH TOYOTA (CORPORATE) AS INSURANCE HAS APPRAISED THE DAMAGE AT OVER $11,000 MAKING THIS A TOTAL LOSS. I HAVE YET TO HEAR ANYTHING FROM TOYOTA REGARDING THE CLAIM.

[XXX] Hi, My name is [XXX]i. I own a 2010 Toyota RAV4. Which I had bought from roseville Toyota dealership. On Sunday afternoon, I was driving back to my home from South Lake Tahoe. I drove for almost 40 miles and suddenly the steering got locked while I was driving the car. There was no prior indication of steering lock lights before I start the car. The steering got locked suddenly in a winding road. I called Geico roadside assistance and towed the car and it is with Thomsons Toyota, placerville, ca. The dealer told me that they found issue with alternator and battery. The reason I am reporting this issue is it should have steering lock light turned on before I start the car, so that it could avoid potential accident situation. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE SERPENTINE BELT, BRAKE PADS, ROTORS, CONTROL ARM, BALL JOINT AND AIR FILTER NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. MY CAR IS TOYOTA 2010 RV4 SPORT.THIS MORNING WHEN I START ENGINE, THE SYMBOLS OF "ELECTRIC POWER STEERING SYSTEM WARNING LIGHT , ABS, AIRBAG, BREAKER , SLIP INDICATOR WARNING LIGHT" ON DASHBOARD ALL LIGHTS ON. THAT'S NEVER HAPPEN BEFORE. AND WHEN I WAS DRIVING, THE STEERING WHEEL BECOME HEAVY. I WAS SO SHOCKED AND GO TO A LOCAL AUTO SERVICE STORE, THEY CHECK AND TOLD ME THIS IS ELECTRONIC STEERING MOTOR ISSUE. THEY ADJUSTED AND WHEEL BACK TO NORMAL NOW, BUT THEY ALSO MENTION THEY CAN NOT GUARANTEE THE SAME SITUATION WILL BE BACK OR NOT. AND THEY RECOMMEND ME TRY TO AVOID DRIVE ON FREEWAY ( BUT THIS IS IMPOSSIBLE IF YOU LIVE IN CALIFORNIA). I WAS TOLD THE SAME PROBLEM HAPPEN ON TOYOTA RECALL GROUP BUT NOT INCLUDING MY CAR'S MAKE YEAR.

WHEN THE VEHICLE HYDRO PLANED OFF THE ROAD DO TO THE ANTI TRACTION BEING DISABLE THREW THE BRAIN OF THE VEHICLE BECAUSE THE CHARCOAL CANSTERED IS BAD .THAT WHAT THE TOYOTA PLACE TOLD ME THE CHARCOAL CANISTER HELPS CONTROL EMISSION NOT THE WAY THE VEHICLE PERFORMS TOYOTA STATED THAT'S THE ONLY WAY THEY COULD GET THE CONSUMER TO REPLACE IT. THEY DID A RECALL ON MY VEHICLE AND IT WAS ABOUT A BOLT RUSTING ON THE BACKEND NEAR THE REAR TIRE SO THE FIX WAS TO PROTECT A BOLT. THEY PUT SOME BAR ON THE BACK SIDE NEAR THE REAR TIRE THAT MADE IT WHERE I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO GET MY BACK END OF THE CAR ALIGNED SINCE. CAUSING MY TIRES TO KEEP GETTING BUBBLES IN THEM. THIS HAPPENS TO EVERY SET I GET AND I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT THEY CANNOT FIX THE REAR ALIGNMENT BECAUSE OF THE RECALL. THIS FIGHT HAS GONE ON FOR YEARS. I WENT TO ROTATE THE TIRES FOR THE FIRST TIME ON MY 2010 RAV4 2.5 V6. I HAD NEVER HAD THE TIRES OFF BEFORE. THE ONLY TIME THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN OFF WAS WHEN I WENT BACK TO THE DEALER AFTER HAVING THE CAR FOR APPROXIMATELY 6 MONTHS TO HAVE THE FRONT 2 WHEELS RE-BALANCED BECAUSE OF A SLIGHT SHAKING IN THE STEERING WHEEL. THIS FIXED THE PROBLEM. HOWEVER WHEN I WENT TO ROTATE 4 TIRES, 2 OF THE FRONT LUG BOLTS BROKE. WHEN I INSPECTED THEM I COULD SEE THAT A COUPLE MORE LOOKED LIKE THEY WERE ALSO STRETCHED BETWEEN THE THREADS, MOST LIKELY FROM OVER TORQUING. KNOWING THAT THEY WOULD LIKELY BREAK ALSO, I DECIDED TO REINSTALL THE WHEEL ANYWAY AND SEE AT WHAT TORQUE POINT THE OTHERS WOULD BREAK. THE ONES THAT ALREADY WERE STRETCHED BROKE AT 85 FT LBS. 2 OTHERS THAT WERE NOT VISIBLY STRETCHED BROKE AT 90 & 95 FT.LBS. I'VE WORKED ON AND RESTORED CARS FOR 50 YEARS. I KNOW WHAT WHEEL STUDS WILL TAKE BEFORE THEY BREAK. I'VE NEVER HAD 13 MM OR 1/2 INCH WHEEL BOLTS BREAK AT THIS LOW TORQUE. THE REPLACEMENT BOLTS, WAGNER BRAKE BRAND, ARE MARKED AS A METRIC 10.9 STRENGTH BOLT, EQUIVALENT TO A SAE GRADE 8. THESE ARE RATED TO TAKE +/- 100 FT. LBS. TORQUE. THE STOCK TOYOTA BOLTS HAVE NO MARKINGS AND THEY RECOMMEND 80 FT LBS AS THE AMOUNT TO TIGHTEN TO. I BELIEVE 8.8 ARE STOCK STRENGTH BOLTS WHICH WOULD TAKE 80 FT LBS, BUT THESE ARE INFERIOR IF THEY ARE 8.8 AND LEAVE NO MARGIN FOR ERROR (OVER 80 FT LBS). SOMEONE USING AN IMPACT WRENCH COULD EASILY OVER STRESS THESE INFERIOR BOLTS. I HAVE SAVED ALL 20 BOLTS I REPLACED. I BELIEVE IF THEY WERE INDEPENDENTLY TESTED IT WOULD SHOW THAT THEY ARE UNSAFE FOR THESE CARS. FROM WHAT I HAVE FOUND ON THE INTERNET, THIS SEEMS TO BE WIDE SPREAD ON MOST 2009 AND 2010 RAV4 CARS. IT WOULD BE INTERESTING TO SEE WHAT THESE 2 YEARS BOLTS TEST AT COMPARED TO THE 2012 AND LATER MODELS. IT MIGHT SHOW THAT TOYOTA KNEW THEY HAD A BREAKAGE PROBLEM.

THE DEALER INSPECTED THE VEHICLE, AND STATED THE FRONT BRAKE PADS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THEY REPLACED THE FRONT PADS AND RESURFACED THE ROTORS. THE CONSUMER STATED AFTER RETRIEVING THE VEHICLE FROM THE DEALER, HER HUSBAND THEN TOOK POSSESSION OF THE VEHICLE. AS HER HUSBAND WAS DRIVING, HE HEARD A CRACKING SOUND COMING FROM UNDER THE VEHICLE, AND ALL OF A SUDDEN, WHEN HE APPLIED THE BRAKE PEDAL, THE BRAKES DID NOT RESPOND. HER HUSBAND WAS A ABLE TO MANEUVER THE VEHICLE AND BROUGHT IT TO A STOP. ONCE HE EXITED THE VEHICLE, THE CONSUMER DISCOVERED A BRAKE PAD BEHIND THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER. THE CONSUMER STATED SHE HAS BEEN TO THE DEALER ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS, ONLY TO BE TOLD THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG. THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL SITUATIONS, WHERE THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT STOP WHEN THE ABS ENGAGED. ON ONE OCCASION, THE CONSUMER HAD TO PUSH THE BRAKE ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR AND EVENTUALLY LANDED IN THE MIDDLE INTERSECTION OF ONCOMING TRAFFIC. The paint on hood is rusty and corroded, this can affect the body of the vehicle since it exposes the metal and can pose a safety problem. Toyota had a recall for 2010 white paint well the same thing happen to mine which is metallic gray. I have another car from another brand from 2012 and paint is intact just faded which is normal but not corroded. I contacted Toyota and they refuse to take my complaint. They only gave me a claim number 250808001898 for record

I PURCHASED NEW FROM TOYOTA OF WARRENTON, VA IN 2010. MY CAR DEVELOPED A PAINT PEELING PROBLEM LAST WINTER. I HAVE BEEN TOLD BY AN AUTO PAINT COMPANY THAT IT IS DUE TO MANUFACTURER MALFUNCTION. I HAVE ATTEMPTED TO CONTACT TOYOTA OF NORTH AMERICA; I FILED A COMPLAINT, MET WITH MY LOCAL DEALER AND DISCOVERED THAT CORPORATE GIVES THE DEALER THE POWER TO DELETE THE CLAIM, PREVENTING ME FROM DEALING DIRECTLY WITH THE MANUFACTURER. IN EFFECT, I HAVE NO RECOURSE.

I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP IN SAVANNAH, GA., CHARLESTON AND LUGOFF, SC., NEITHER ONE OF THE DEALERSHIPS CARED. THEY PASSED IT OFF AS NOTHING. HOWEVER, IT IS A PROBLEM WITH THE PAINT. Burns oil. No leaks and compression is spot on. Burns oil so bad that around every 2,000 miles, if you hit the brakes to hard it causes the car to stall. Whether it's in a parking lot or intersection. Has happened several times. Since I purchased the car in 2022. Has been inspected by Toyota mechanics on more than one occasion, but can't find any solution, have tried thicker oils, oil stabilizers and nothing helps.

The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed and approaching a stop light, with the brake pedal depressed to the floorboard the vehicle failed to stop as intended. As a result, the contact rear-ended the vehicle ahead. The air bags did not deploy. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic. I GOT OVER TO THE SHOULDER AND THE BRAKES WORKED FINE. I NOTICED THAT WHEN I WAS BRAKING MY ABS LIGHT WAS FLASHING. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP. THEY SAID THAT THEY HAD NEVER HEARD OF THAT HAPPENING. BUT WAS I AWARE OF A SERVICE RECALL ON THE SMART STOP TECHNOLOGY. I SAID NO I HAVEN'T. I WAS TOLD THAT THE "RECALL CAME OUT IN 2013" FUNNY BECAUSE MY CAR HAD BEEN TO THE DEALERSHIP IN 2014. The contact owns a 2010 Toyota RAV4. The contact stated while driving 35 mph, the steering wheel inadvertently locked and the vehicle loss power. The steering warning light was illuminated. The contact stated he was able to veer to the side of the road while driving downhill. The vehicle was towed to the dealer who diagnosed that the alternator needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that they could not provide any assistance as the vehicle was out of warranty. A case was opened. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 162,000.

ON SEPTEMBER 1 I WAS DRIVING IN A CONGESTED AREA APPROACHING AN INTERSECTION WITH STOPPED TRAFFIC. AS I WAS APPLYING MY BRAKES I SUDDENLY FELT MY 2010 TOYOTA RAV4 LURCH FORWARD - AT FIRST I THOUGHT I HAD BEEN HIT FROM BEHIND, BUT A QUICK GLANCE IN MY REARVIEW MIRROR INDICATED THE CAR BEHIND ME WAS STILL AT A SAFE DISTANCE. I QUICKLY TURNED OFF MY RADIO TO HEAR MY ENGINE ROARING AS I WAS CONTINUING TO APPLY THE BRAKES. I THEN PUT THE RAV4 IN NEUTRAL WHILE THE ENGINE CONTINUED TO ROAR. ONCE IN NEUTRAL, THE RAV4 CAME TO A STOP. I THEN DEPRESSED THE ACCELERATOR SEVERAL TIMES AND THE ENGINE SETTLED DOWN. AS I APPROACHED THE INTERSECTION I WAS TRAVELING AT A SLOW RATE OF SPEED. WHEN I APPLIED THE BRAKES THE RAV 4 WAS SLOWLY COMING TO A STOP UNTIL I FELT THE CAR LURCH FORWARD. ONCE I BEGAN APPLYING THE BRAKES I DID NOT TAKE MY FOOT OFF THE BRAKE PEDAL, NOR DID I APPLY ANY PRESSURE TO THE ACCELERATOR. IN ADDITION, MY CARPET MAT WAS SEVERAL INCHES AWAY FROM THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL AT ALL TIMES. The contact owns a 2010 Toyota RAV4. The contact stated that she gets her vehicle maintenance on a regular basis, however, when she took her vehicle to get serviced by an independent mechanic she was advised that the oil was low. The contact stated that they put oil in the vehicle, however, when it was time for the vehicle to get maintenance again, she was again advised that the oil was low and that the vehicle was leaking oil. The contact stated that after a while she noticed she was inputting 3 quarts of oil per week in the vehicle. The contact stated that there were no warning lights illuminated on the vehicle at the time of failure. The contact stated that she does not know if the vehicle was losing oil until she checks the oil, which occurs on a regular basis. The contact stated she did contact the manufacturer, who was not able to assist. The failure mileage was 200,000.

My tires are a 225/65R17. repeatedly, in heavy rain or very wet snow, the tires on mounted on the driver's side hydroplane and lose traction. I am concerned that this problem is due to the design of the tread. This is a directional tire that is only designed for the right side of the vehicle. Tires mounted on the Left side of the vehicle channel water/wet snow toward the center of the tire, causing them to hydroplane under these conditions. THE FRONT HEADRESTS ON THIS VEHICLE, BOTH PASSENGER-SIDE AND DRIVER-SIDE, ARE SITUATED MUCH TOO FAR FORWARD. THE HEADREST PUSHES ON THE MIDDLE OF ONE'S HEAD, CAUSING A CHIN-FORWARD / HEAD-FORWARD POSTURE, WHICH IS UNNATURAL AND ERGONOMICALLY INCORRECT. THERE ARE NUMEROUS FORUMS AND MESSAGE BOARDS ON THE INTERNET ON WHICH DRIVERS OF NEWER VEHICLES SUCH AS THIS ONE ARE COMPLAINING ABOUT EXTREME PAIN BEING CAUSED BY THESE HEADRESTS. IN MY CASE IN PARTICULAR, THE MALPOSITIONING OF THE HEADREST IS CAUSING VERTEBRAE IN MY NECK, ALONG WITH MY UPPER TWO RIBS, TO BE PUSHED OUT OF PLACE. Engine oil is burning with out discharging from the engine. Can find no leak anywhere in the engine compartment. Constantly adding oil to the car as the oil indicator isn’t working either. The engine compression is spot on to manufacturers specifications. If the engine runs out of oil it could lead to a crash. Suspension: Loud popping in the rear drivers side when first moving. Don’t know if it is tie rod or something else. Don’t need whatever is causing the pop to break as that could lead to a crash.

This car was bought for a new driver and we have had 2 separate occasions when she has gotten somewhere and the car wont start. All the warning lights come on, but will not do anything when you push the button. We can jump it and it will start. This is not safe for a young person that could get stranded at random somewhere, and is now afraid to take it somewhere. We have checked the connections and the battery has been checked and is fine. The other complaint is the rear suspension recall. The tires were rotated and now it has a vibration, I was told that because of the recall it cannot be aligned unless things are replaced because of the terrible fix job on the recall. If something is recalled it should be fixed correctly and not be a bandaid job. There should not be a cost associated with a cheap fix that caused more problems. We purchased this vehicle because of reputation, if they are not supporting their product, then it will go and no other toyota products will be purchased.

I PURCHASED A 2010 TOYOTA RAV4 JANUARY 2010. LIVING IN MAINE, WINTER DRIVING IS UNAVOIDABLE. MY COMPLAINT IS ABOUT THE REAR WINDSHIELD WIPER, WHICH IS DESIGNED TO CLEAR THE WINDOW FROM THE DRIVER'S SIDE TO THE PASSENGER SIDE. UNFORTUNATELY, THE SNOW GETS TRAPPED BY THE MOUNTED SPARE TIRE AND STOPS THE BLADE. While driving my vehicle, it began to smoke under the hood. I exited the highway in order to pull over in a safer location. Some smoke started coming through the vent in the car as I pulled over. I exited the car and moved away and small flames began at the air vents on the outside. After I called 911, The fire kept building until the front half of the car was engulfed. The fire department came and put out the fire. They weren’t sure the exact cause, but believe it started in the engine. My car was up to date on inspection and was not yet due for an oil change. No dashboard service lights were on beforehand. I had State Farm insurance and am not sure yet if they were able to find anything from their investigation.

INTERMITTENTLY, MY 2010 RAV4 ENGINE TURNS OFF, WHILE DRIVING, AND THEN TURNS BACK ON SHORTLY AFTER. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS, AS YOU LOSE POWER STEERING AND BRAKES, MEANING VERY DIFFICULT TO STEER AND STOP. THIS HAPPENS WHEN THE CAR IS IN MOTION. NEVER HAD IT CUT OUT AT A STOP LIGHT. I'M THINKING IT'S THE ECM. THE CAR'S MAINTENANCE IS VERY UP TO DATE. MY DAUGHTER DRIVES THIS VEHICLE AND IT HAS HAPPENED TO HER NUMEROUS TIMES. I HAVE EXPERIENCED IT ONCE, SHORTLY AFTER GETTING THE CAR FROM THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP. I ASKED THEM ABOUT IT AND THEY WEREN'T ABLE TO OFFER ANY SUGGESTIONS, OTHER THAN I COULD PAY THEM TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM. THERE ARE NO ERROR CODES REGISTERED WHEN THIS HAPPENS, WHICH IS WHY I THINK IT'S THE ECM. TOYOTA HAS UPGRADED THE CODE LEVEL FOR THE ECM TWICE, SO I'M THINKING THERE ARE ISSUES THEY ADDRESSED IN UPGRADING THE CODE. I JUST CAN'T FIND WHAT THOSE UPGRADES FIXED ANYWHERE ONLINE. WE HIT A DEER WHILE DOING 45 TO 50 MPH ON A LOCAL 2 LANE HIGHWAY. DAMAGE WAS MAJOR AND WAS MOSTLY TO THE PASSENGER FRONT BUT WE WERE ABLE TO DRIVE IT HOME (ABOUT A MILE). AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY AS INTENDED AND DID NOT PREVENT PASSENGER FROM HITTING HEAD ON WINDOW TRIM. PASSENGER WAS TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL FOR HEAD ABRASION AND NECK PAIN. SHE WAS TREATED AND RELEASED. On August 10 2022 I was pulling slowly into a parking spot with foot lightly on brake to control forward motion car attempted to surge /accelerate . I stepped firmly on brake and since car was nearly stopped I put it in to park. RPM's went up dramatically and then car reverted to normal rpms. I estimate that the entire process.I estimate that the entire process took place in about 30 seconds or less. I immediately took vehicle to the Toyota dealer and they presumably checked it out and found no problems with vehicle. They "deemed it accidental accelerator pedal engagement by customer" which it was definitely not! A similar situation occurred about 3 months earlier. That time I was pulling slowly into traffic and suddenly car tried to accelerate. I pressed firmly on brake pedal and acceleration stopped. Entire event was very brief seconds and I ignored it as a possible anomaly not requiring attention. I reported that to dealer as well when I took it in for the 10 August incident.

The contact owns a 2010 Toyota RAV4. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle made abnormal sounds. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, but the dealer could not duplicate the failure. The vehicle was taken to another dealer, Nashville Toyota North (2400 Gallatin Pike N, Madison, TN 37115), and diagnosed that the rear differential coupling was leaking oil, the rear driver's side axle bearing was faulty, and the radiator was leaking. The rear differential coupling, rear driver's side axle bearing, and radiator needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired and remained at the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle was past the nine-year extended warranty coverage. The failure mileage was 97,900.

IT DOESN'T NECESSARY MATTER WHICH ROADWAY YOU ARE DRIVING ON. FROM MY UNDERSTANDING THERE IS A MALFUNCTION IN THE TORQUE CONVERTER. A "LOCK-UP CLUTCH" DESIGN FLAW IN THE DAMPER PLATE AND SPRINGS. THIS IS ALREADY A KNOWN ISSUE FOR SOME MODELS AND RECALLS HAVE BEEN ISSUED. MY REAR CAR SUSPENSION WAS INCASED BECAUSE IT WAS RECALLED. OVER 55 MPH WAS CAR WOULD SWAY FROM SIDE TO SIDE. I CALLED TOYOTA AND WAS TOLD MY CAR WAS PERFECT. I TOOK THE CAR TO TWO DEALERS WHO SAID AT LOW SPEED THE CAR PERFORMED WELL. THE WAS A LAW SUIT IN CALIFORNIA THAT PROVED THE CAR IS DEFECTIVE AFTER THE RECALL. I MISSED THE DATE BECAUSE I DID NOT RESEARCH THE WEB. I SOLD THE CAR FOR LESS BECAUSE I DID NOT WANT A CRASH. I LOST MONEY ON THE CAR SALE.

I WAS NEVER NOTIFIED. THE CAR WAS RPAIRED FOR A FLOOR MAT PROBLEM, BUT NOT THE MOTOR JUMP. I SOLD THE CAR BECAUSE THE CAR WAS IN 2015 BECAUSE IT HAD A SECOND MAJOR PROBLEM WITH POOR CONTROL OF BACKEND.

DEALER INFORMS THAT THERE IS A CHARCOAL CANISTER MALFUNCTION AND THE PART NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. DEALER PERFORMED REPAIR AND REPLACEMENT OF TOYOTA PARTS. PAID ~$900. FEBRUARY 2016: SAME LIGHTS ON DASH WHILE DRIVING. TAKE TO THE DEALER AND THE ERROR CODES INDICATE THE CHARCOAL CANISTER NEEDS TO BE REPLACED AGAIN. ESTIMATE $1020. WHILE DRIVING VEHICLE BEGAN TO SHAKE OR "WOBBLE" . UPON INSPECTION WAS FOUND TO BE TIRE WHICH WAS UNEVEN IN WEAR. REPLACED TIRE AND AFTER A SHORT TIME WAS FOUND NOT TO BE THE PROBLEM. UPON INSPECTION WAS FOUND SEALS ON REAR DIFFERENTIAL LEAKING . CLOSER INSPECTION FOUND REAR SUSPENSION, TIE ROD LOOSE. THIS WE BELIEVE IS DUE TO REAR SUSPENSION PARTS BEING FAULTY. PARTS ARE ORIGINAL. AT THIS TIME WE ARE BEING TOLD THAT IT IS NOT COVERED UNDER ANY VEHICLE WARRANTY OR RECALL. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY PROBLEM AS IT CAUSED VEHICLE TO LOOSE COMPLETE CONTROL. AT THIS SAME TIME VEHICLE REAR DIFFERENTIAL ALSO BEGAN TO GIVE OFF A "WHINE" SOUND. THE TIRES HAVE BEEN WORN UNEVENLY DUE TO REAR SUSPENSION BEING LOOSE CAUSING THIS FAILURE. OUR CONCERNS ARE THAT WE ARE BEING TOLD THERE IS NO WARRANTY OR RECALL TO CORRECT OR PROTECT ANYONE OWNING AND DRIVING WITHOUT KNOWLEDGE OF THIS PROBLEM. AFTER COMPLETING A 5 BLOCK DOWNHILL DRIVE IN SECOND GEAR WITH LITTLE USE OF EITHER THE ACCELERATOR OR THE BRAKE, I THEN BRAKED AS I TURNED INTO MY GARAGE IN ORDER TO PARK MY VEHICLE. AS I ENTERED MY GARAGE AND WHILE STILL BRAKING AND AT SLOWING SPEED THE VEHICLE'S ENGINE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED AND THE VEHICLE LURCHED FORWARD VIOLENTLY. I IMMEDIATELY APPLIED HEAVY BRAKE PRESSURE AND UP SHIFTED IN AN ATTEMPT TO TAKE THE VEHICLE OUT OF GEAR. MY BRAKING MAY HAVE SLOWED, BUT DID NOT STOP, THE VEHICLE'S FORWARD ACCELERATION. WHEN I PUT THE VEHICLE INTO PARK, THE WHEELS LOCKED, FORWARD PROGRESS STOPPED (JUST IN FRONT OF THE BACK WALL OF MY GARAGE), AND I SHUT THE ENGINE OFF USING THE IGNITION SWITCH. AFTER TAKING TWO SHORT 90 DEGREE TURNS AT A PARKING FLOOR (4TH FLOOR), THE VEHICLE WAS HALF WAY IN THE PARKING SLOT WHEN IT SUDDENLY PICKED UP SPEED AND CRASHED INTO WIRE CABLES AND A CONCRETE POST. THIS TYPE OF SPEED HAD HAPPENED TWICE IN THE PAST WITHIN THREE MONTHS OF PURCHASING THE CAR AS A NEW VEHICLE (BROUGHT IN JAN 2010). AFTER THE 2ND SUCH INCIDENT THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE ISSUE. THE VEHICLE HAD BEEN TAKEN IN THE PAST FOR GPS CHECK AS WELL. SUBSEQUENTLY THE VEHICLE WAS ASKED TO BE BROUGHT IN FOR A RECALL SERVICE AND THAT WAS COMPLETED AS WELL. THIS INCIDENT WAS THE NEXT TIME WHEN TRYING TO BRAKE TO COME TO A SLOW SPEED IT PICKED UP SPEED. WROTE TO TOYOTA WITH ALL DETAILS BUT THEY SAY THAT THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE ISSUE AND THE VEHICLE DOES NOT SEEM TO HAVE FAULTS. OUR CONCERN IS JUST THAT - THEY CANNOT DUPLICATE THE ISSUE WHICH MEANS IT CAN HAPPEN ANYTIME WITHOUT ANY WARNING. WE ARE 100% SURE THIS WAS NOT DRIVER ERROR AND THAT IT WAS IDENTICAL TO THE PAST INSTANCES. TOYOTA EXPECTS US TO DRIVE THIS VEHICLE WE BELIEVE HAS SOME FORM OF A FAULT. THEY WERE NOT WILLING TO DRIVE IT TO AND FROM THE TEST LOCATION EVEN AFTER THEY SAY THE TEST REVEALED NO FAULTS - THEY HAD IT TOWED BOTH WAYS. THIS IS A PURE SAFETY ISSUE AND THIS CAR SHOULD NOT BE ON THE ROAD EVER AGAIN. MANY PEOPLE CAN GET HURT OR DIE DUE TO PURE CALLOUSNESS OF A VEHICLE MANUFACTURER. TOYOTA MAY MANUFACTURE AND DESIGN GREAT VEHICLES BUT THEY SHOULD ALSO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY SYSTEM OR TECHNICAL MALFUNCTIONS OF THEIR VEHICLES. AT APPROXIMATELY 18:30 ON DECEMBER 27, 2011, I EXPERIENCED AN UNINTENDED ACCELERATION EVENT IN MY 2010 TOYOTA RAV4. I WAS STOPPING FOR A RED LIGHT ON PACIFIC COAST HIGHWAY IN SEAL BEACH, CALIFORNIA AT THE CORNER OF FIRST STREET WHEN I NOTICED IT WAS DIFFICULT TO APPLY THE BRAKE, AND THE CAR DID NOT APPEAR TO WANT TO STOP. I APPLIED THE BRAKE MORE FORCEFULLY AND WAS EVENTUALLY ABLE TO STOP IN THE LEFT HAND TURN LANE, HOWEVER THE CAR KEPT LURCHING FORWARD AS IF IT WANTED TO BREAK FREE OF THE BRAKE. HAVING HEARD THE WIDESPREAD PUBLICITY REGARDING THE UNINTENDED ACCELERATION PROBLEM IN TOYOTA VEHICLES, AND HAVING PREVIOUSLY EXPERIENCED THE PROBLEM ON ONE OCCASION OVER A YEAR EARLIER, I THOUGHT THIS MIGHT BE THE ISSUE. I PUT THE CAR INTO PARK AND THE ENGINE IMMEDIATELY REVVED UP TO AN ALARMING RATE. I TURNED OFF THE IGNITION IN PANIC BEFORE I WAS ABLE TO LOOK AT THE TACHOMETER. HOWEVER, JUDGING BY THE SOUND AND LATER EXPERIMENTATION WITH REVVING WHILE PARKED, I BELIEVE THE RPM MUST HAVE BEEN IN THE 4000-5000 RANGE AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT. I WAS PARTICULARLY SHAKEN BY THIS EVENT BECAUSE I HAD ALREADY HAD THE RECALL SERVICE PERFORMED THAT WAS SUPPOSEDLY INTENDED TO ADDRESS THE UNINTENDED ACCELERATION ISSUE. THIS RECALL SERVICE WAS PERFORMED MAY 10, 2011 AT DESERT TOYOTA IN TUCSON, ARIZONA. I HAD EXPERIENCE THE UNINTENDED ACCELERATION ISSUE ONCE BEFORE, BUT IT WAS NOT NEARLY AS DRAMATIC. WITH THE VEHICLE IN PARK AND THE BRAKE PEDAL DEPRESSED, THE ENGINE REVED IMMEDIATELY TO AROUND 6000 RPM WHEN STARTED. I TURNED OFF THE ENGINE WITHOUT SHIFTING OUT OF PARK, GOT OUT OF THE CAR, AND VISUALLY CHECKED THE FLOORMAT. IT WAS NOT TOUCHING THE THROTTLE PEDAL AND THE THROTTLE PEDAL DID NOT APPEAR TO BE DEPRESSED. AFTER APPROXIMATELY 1 MINUTE I STARTED THE ENGINE A SECOND TIME AND THE SAME THING OCCURRED. I THEN WAITED APPROXIMATELY 5 MINUTES, PUMPED THE THROTTLE PEDAL SEVERAL TIMES, THEN STARTED THE VEHICLE A THIRD TIME. THIS TIME THE VEHICLE STARTED NORMALLY (ENGINE IDLING). I THEN DROVE HOME WITHOUT FURTHER REVING ISSUES AND HAVE NOT HAD ANY REOCCURENCE SINCE THE INCIDENT DATE. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP FOR SERVICE THE NEXT DAY AND WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS A FLOORMAT ISSUE, AND MY DRIVERSIDE FLOORMAT WAS REMOVED BY THE DEALERSHIP. I DISAGREE WITH THIS ASSESSMENT. IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT BEFORE I HAD THE REVING ISSUE UPON STARTING THE VEHICLE, MY LAST INTERACTION WITH THE VEHICLE WAS TO HAVE MY FOOT COMPLETELY OFF THE GAS PEDAL AS I WAS STEERING THE CAR INTO A PARKING SPACE, WHEN I WAS USING ONLY THE BRAKE PEDAL TO MODERATE MY SPEED, WITH NO THROTTLE PEDAL PRESSURE BEING APPLIED BY ME, AND WITH THE ENGINE IDLING, AS IS NORMAL. DO NOT SEE HOW THIS COULD BE A RESIDUAL STUCK THROTTLE PEDAL ISSUE WHEN I RETURNED TO MY AUTOMOBLE AND STARTED THE ENGINE TO DRIVE AWAY. THE ONLY OTHER FACTOR WHICH MAY (OR MAY NOT) BE RELEVENT WAS THAT WHEN I TURNED THE ENGINE OFF AFTER PARKING, I DID NOT FIRST TURN THE RADIO OFF, WHICH I USUALLY DO. WITH A TOTALLY DEAD BATTERY YOU CANNOT UNLOCK THE REAR DOOR WITH THE REMOTE ENTRY, AND THERE IS NO KEY IN THE DOOR TO ALLOW YOU TO UNLOCK THE REAR HATCH DOOR, WHERE YOUR JUMPER CABLES WOULD BE STORED. THUS YOUR JUMPER CABLES ARE NOT ACCESSIBLE FOR YOUR USE, UNLESS YOU CLIMB OVER THE REAR SEATS AND MANAGE TO LIFE THE FLOOR PANEL AND RETRIEVE THE CABLES. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA RAV-4. THE CONTACT STATED THAT AFTER PURCHASING A VEHICLE THAT CAME EQUIPPED WITH A TOW PACKAGE, HE DECIDED TO HAVE THE TRAILER HITCH ATTACHED AT THE DEALER. PRIOR TO HAVING THE ELECTRICAL HARNESS AND SWITCH MODULE INSTALLED, THE CORPORATE OFFICE ADVISED HIS DEALER NOT TO PERFORM THE WORK DUE TO A KNOWN DEFECT THAT THEY HAVE DISCOVERED. THE DEALER CONTINUED TO DO THE WORK. THE TYPE OF DEFECT HAD NOT BEEN DISCLOSED AND THE CONTACT HAD NOT EXPERIENCED ANY FAILURES. THE CURRENT MILEAGE ON THE VEHICLE WAS 13,000.

VEHICLE WAS AT THE STOP SIGN FOR THE HIGH SPEED TRAIN. THE VEHICLE WAS REARENDED BY A TRUCK. BRAKES WERE APPLIED, THE BRAKES FAILED AND THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO GO TOWARDS THE RAILROAD CROSSING WITH APPROACH OF THE HIGH SPEED TRAIN. UNINTENDED ACCELERATION O F TOYOTA RAV4 WITH "FIXED" ACCELERATOR PEDAL WITHIN 50 MILES OF DRIVING: 0N COMING TO TRAFFIC STOP ENGINE REVVED UP TO AN AUDIBLE HIGH SPEED. TO PREVENT A COLLISION I APPLIED INTENSIVE PRESSURE TO BRAKE PEDAL WHILE SETTING HAND BRAKE. CAR STLILL SEEMED TO BE IN FORWARD ROLL MODE, SO I PUSHED GEAR SHIFT FROM DRIVE THRU NEUTRAL,REVERSE AND INTO PARK. ENGINE SPEED RETURNED TO NORMAL IDLE WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT. I THEN DROVE 40 SOME MILES TO RETURN HOME. ON 3/27 I TOOK CAR TO THE DEALER TO REPORT THAT THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL MODIFICATION WAS A FAILURE. I TOOK DELIVERY OF THIS NEW CAR ON 7/31/09. WITHIN ABOUT 300 DRIVING MILES OF ACCUMULATED MILEAGE, THE 1ST UNINTENDED ACCELERATION OCCURRED REQUIRED ADDED PRESSURE TO BRAKE PEDAL & USE OF HAND(EMERGENCY) BRAKE TO STOP CAR & END ABNORMAL ENGINE SPEED. GEAR SHIFT REMAINED IN DRIVE. I HAD 3 TO 4 SUCH INCIDENTS WITHIN APPROX. 2400 MILES COMPRISING 40-50 TRIPS, NONE LONGER THAN 100 MILES. MOST OF MY DRIVING IS HIGHWAY TYPE, WHICH DOES REQUIRE INTERMITTENT BUT INFREQUENT TRAFFIC STOPS. ABOUT 200 MILES OCCURRED IN CITY-TYPE CONDITIONS (FREQUENT TRAFFIC STOPS) WHICH WERE SPREAD OVER ABOUT 12 OF THE AFORESAID TRIPS. ALL THE UA SITUATIONS OCCURRED UNDER THE CITY-TYPE CONDITIONS. I MADE SEVERAL TRIPS TO THE DEALER TO REPORT THE INCIDENTS AND TO OBTAIN HELP. AFTER THE 1ST ONE THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT CHECKED THE CAR & FOUND NOTHING WITH THE CAR'S SAFE OPERABILITY. I TOOK THE CAR BACK FOR SERVICE AFTER THE INCIDENT WHICH WAS POST SAFETY RECALL PEDAL MODIFICATION. THE RESPONSE WAS THAT THIS WAS THE FIRST THAT THEY HAD HEARD OF A "FIX" FAILURE. TOYOTA APPEARS TO CLING TO THE STICKY FLOOR MAT OR SIMULTANEOUS PRESSURE TO ACCELERATOR AND BRAKE PEDALS.

MY FRIEND PURCHASED A 2010 TOYOTA RAV4 5-DOOR 4X2 SUV LTD ON 3/20/2010 AND ON 3/27/2010 THE VEHICLE FAILED. THE CAR HESITATED TO ADVANCE AND AFTER 2 OR 3 MORE TRIES DID NOT RESPONDED AT ALL. SO MY FRIEND CALLED THE DEALER TO HAVE THE DEALER PICK UP THE CAR. SHE WAS INTERESTED IN KNOWING WHAT WAS WRONG WITH HER NEW CAR. THE CAR WAS PICKED UP THE SAME DAY 3/27/2010. ON MARCH 29, SHE CALLED THE DEALER TO FIND OUT ABOUT HER NEW CAR?S PROBLEM, AND THE SALESMAN ([XXX] ) TOLD HER THEY DO NOT KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS, BUT [XXX] SAID, ?THE CAR NEEDS A NEW ENGINE?. SHE LOVES THE RAV4 AND WAS CONVINCED TO ASK FOR ANOTHER RAV4, SAME MODEL, SAME PRICE; JUST ANOTHER RAV4?? SOUNDS FAIR, SOUNDS EASY, FOR HER. NOW, MY FRIEND HAS NO CHOICE BUT TO ASK FOR NO LESS THAN HER MONEY BACK. HER EXPERIENCED HAS OPENED MY EYES TO THE WAY THAT THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP TAKES ADVANTAGE OF THEIR CUSTOMERS. MORE PEOPLE WILL KNOW ABOUT THIS STORY AND I KNOW THAT IS ONLY ONE OF MANY STORIES YOU HEAR, BUT I HOPE YOU WILL LEARN A LESSON FROM THIS STORY. I WAS LEAVING MY HOME IN MY 2010 TOYOTA RAV4. I PUT THE CAR IN REVERSE AND IT INSTANTLY BEGAN TO ACCELERATE AT A VERY HIGH SPEED. I IMMEDIATELY PRESSED DOWN ON THE BRAKES AS HARD AS I COULD. HOWEVER NOTHING OCCURRED THE CAR CONTINUED TO REVERSE RAPIDLY. I SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL BUT IT WAS A SMALL SPACE AND BY THEN I WAS NEAR THE STONE FIXTURE WHICH THE VEHICLE HIT. THE FIXTURE WHICH WAS SOLID STONE WAS IN THE GROUND, IT WAS UPROOTED BY THE VEHICLE. IN ORDER FOR AN OBJECT LIKE THIS TO BE UPROOTED A GREAT DEAL OF SPEED WOULD NEED TO BE INVOLVED. THE OWNER OF OUR DEALERSHIP CALLED AND SAID SHE TEST DROVE TWO OTHER ONES, SAME MODEL AS OURS AND THEY DO IT TOO. IN FACT SHE SAID ONE VIBRATES WORSE THAN OURS.
