TL* THE CONTACT OWNS 2001 TOYOTA SIENNA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT BOTH REAR SLIDING DOORS HANDLES FAILED. THE EXTERIOR HANDLE ON THE REAR LIFT GATE ALSO FAILED. AS A RESULT, THE POWER MOTOR ON BOTH SLIDING DOORS WAS REMOVED. DUE TO THE REMOVAL OF THE POWER MOTORS, THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE DOOR HANDLES WERE TOO THIN TO SUCCESSFULLY OPEN AND CLOSE THE DOORS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURES, BUT OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE AND ADVISED THE CONTACT TO REPLACE THE DOOR HANDLES. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 57,000.

{MUCH OF THIS CONTENT IS COPIED FROM ANOTHER COMPLAINT, BUT WE ARE EXPERIENCING THE SAME PROBLEMS} SLIDING DOOR LATCHES GET STUCK SOMETIMES IN THE OPEN AND SOMETIMES IN THE CLOSED POSITION. WHEN DOORS ARE CLOSED WE ARE UNABLE TO PUSH THE BUTTON INSIDE OR USE THE OUTSIDE HANDLE TO RELEASE THE LATCH AND OPEN THE DOOR. IF THE DOOR IS OPEN WHEN THIS HAPPENS WE ARE THEN UNABLE TO CLOSE THE DOOR AS IT WILL NOT LATCH. WHEN THE DOOR REMAINS OPEN THIS IS AN OBVIOUS SAFETY ISSUE AND THE VAN IS UNDRIVEABLE AS DOING SO WOULD PUT THE PASSENGERS AT RISK. WHEN THE DOOR IS STUCK IN A CLOSE POSITION IT MAKES EXITING THE VEHICLE DIFFICULT WHICH WOULD BE A SAFETY ISSUE IF THERE WERE AN EMERGENCY AND A QUICK EXIT WERE NECESSARY. THE BACK HATCH LATCH HAS ALSO BROKEN. WE HAVE REMOVED THE COVER FROM THE BACK HATCH AND WITH A GREAT DEAL OF MANIPULATION WE CAN USUALLY MAKE THIS DOOR WORK. THE POWER SLIDING DOOR IS NOW STUCK OPEN AND WILL NOT CLOSE. THE OUTSIDE HANDLE HAS COMPLETELY BROKEN OFF. THE HANDLE ON THE MANUAL SLIDING DOOR IS GOING TO BREAK OFF SOON. REAR TAILGATE LATCH BROKE. BECAUSE THERE'S NO REMOTE WAY TO OPEN THE LATCH (EITHER WIRELESS OR WIRED), IT'S NECESSARY TO CLIMB INSIDE THE VEHICLE REMOVE AND DISASSEMBLE THE INTERIOR REAR-HATCH DOOR PANELING AND MANUALLY ENGAGE THE RELEASE CABLE. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS 2001 TOYOTA SIENNA. THE CONTACT STATED THE DOOR LATCHES WERE FRACTURED ON THE FRONT DRIVER, PASSENGER AND REAR PASSENGER SLIDING DOOR. THE DRIVER SIDE SLIDING DOOR FAILED AND WAS UNABLE TO BE OPENED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE ONLY WAY TO ENTER THE VEHICLE WAS FROM THE REAR HATCH. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED BUT PROVIDED NO ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 115,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 118,000.

THE DOOR LATCH ON THE PASSENGER SIDE SLIDING DOOR HAS FAILED ON TWO OCCASIONS. THE FIRST TIME WAS IN SEPTEMBER 2007. WE HAD IT REPLACED AT THE DEALERSHIP AT OUR OWN EXPENSE. THEN IT FAILED AGAIN LAST WEEK. THE DEALERSHIP TELLS US IT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED AGAIN. THE LATCH ON THE REAR DOOR HAS ALSO FAILED AND BEEN REPAIRED AT OUR EXPENSE. *TR

THE DRIVER'S SIDE REAR SLIDING DOOR HAS SEVERAL TIMES NOW REFUSED TO LATCH, AND WHEN IN EMERGENCY SITUATION I HAVE LOCKED IT AND FORCED IT TO SHUT THEN IT WILL NOT UNLOCK AND IT HAS TO BE TAKEN APART TO BE OPENED AND THE WHOLE LATCH AND LOCK MECHANISM REWORKED BY THE MECHANIC, AND IN THE MEANTIME THE DOOR IS UNABLE TO BE OPENED WHICH IS EXTREMELY UNSAFE WHEN I HAVE CHILDREN IN THE MIDDLE AND BACK ROWS OF THE VAN. THIS IS THE THIRD TIME IN THE PAST 3 YEARS THAT THIS PROBLEM HAS OCCURRED, SO IT IS DEFINITELY AN ACTUAL PROBLEM WITH THE HARDWARE OF THE DOOR LATCH MECHANISM ITSELF AND NOT SIMPLY A GLITCH THAT OCCURRED ONCE OR SOMETHING.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS 2001 TOYOTA SIENNA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE RUNNING BOARD ON THE DRIVER SIDE FRACTURED AND COLLAPSED AFTER HE STEPPED ONTO IT TO ENTER THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO STATED THAT THE RUNNING BOARD WAS RUSTED UNDERNEATH AND WOULD NEED REPLACING. IN ADDITION, THE DEALER ADVISED THAT THE RUNNING BOARDS WERE NO LONGER BEING MANUFACTURED BY THE ORIGINAL MANUFACTURER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED AND THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 101,000.

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 TOYOTA SIENNA. WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS BEING SERVICED, THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE SPARE TIRE WAS MISSING. THE CONTACT REFERENCED RECALL 10V160000 (STRUCTURE) AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE PARTS WERE BACKORDERED. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 141,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 150,000.

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 TOYOTA SIENNA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 25 MPH A METAL BAR UNDERNEATH THE STEPS ON THE SIDE OF THE VEHICLE WERE DRAGGING ON THE GROUND. THE CONTACT PULLED OVER AND NOTICED THAT THE STEPS HAD MAJOR RUST UNDERNEATH IT. HE WAS CONCERNED THAT SOMEONE COULD BE SEVERELY INJURED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER WOULD NOT COVER THE REPAIR COST. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 55,000.

MY 2001 TOYOTA SIENNA XLE POWER SLIDING DOOR ON THE PASSENGER SIDE (CAME ONLY WITH THIS ONE POWER DOOR) DID NOT WORK PROPERLY. IT DID NOT OPEN BY PRESSING THE BUTTON, IT WORKS TO CLOSE BUT NOT TIGHT. WHEN I CHOOSE TO USE IT MANUALLY, IT IS SO HEAVY THAT THE CHILDREN HAVE NOT ENOUGH STRENGTH TO OPEN IT. THEY HAVE TO EXIT THE CAR FROM THE DRIVER'S SIDE OTHER THAN ON THE CURB SIDE. IT PLACES THE PASSENGERS IN DANGEROUS SITUATION, AS WELL AS TO THE DRIVER IF HE HAS TO COME OUT OF THE CAR TO HELP OPEN THE DOOR AT THE CURB SIDE. MY COMPLAINT IS THAT DOOR SHOULD BE OPERATED AS LIGHT AS THE OTHER DOOR WHEN IT IS IN THE MANUAL MODE AND THE COST TO FIX IS TOO MUCH (ABOUT $2,000) TO AFFORD. *TR

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 TOYOTA SIENNA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHEN DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 60 TO 65 MPH, THE VEHICLE WOULD SUDDENLY STALL WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS UNABLE TO RESTART SO IT WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. AFTER DIAGNOSIS, THEY ADVISED THAT THE ENGINE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED DUE TO SLUDGE BUILD-UP AND OIL JELLING. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED FOR THE ENGINE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND THEY OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE APPROXIMATELY 134,000. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.

I HAVE A SIENNA LE 2001. 118,000 MILES. WE HAVE BEEN THE ONLY OWNERS SINCE WE BOUGHT IT. WE HAVE NO PERFECT RECORD OF OIL CHANGES BUT WE HAVE DONE IT PERIODICALLY. ABOUT 3-4 MONTHS AGO, IT WAS RUNNING OK, BUT IT BLEW OUT WHITE-ISH/ BLUE-ISH SMOKE OCCASIONALLY (USUALLY WHEN FIRST STARTING, IT DIDN'T SEEM TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IF IT WAS HOT OR COLD). IT ALSO HAD LITTLE AND OCCASIONAL POWER LOSS WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A STOP. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER WHERE WE BOUGHT IT, AND THEY SAID THEY JUST TOOK OFF THE TOP COVER OF THE ENGINE AND IT LOOKED LIKE IT WAS GUMMED UP WITH OIL. I HAVE CHANGED THE PCV VALVE, I TOOK IT TO A PLACE FOR AN OIL AND OIL FILTER CHANGE, I AM CONCERNED THE DAMAGE WILL CONTINUE TO THE ENGINE. THE DEALER SAID I NEED A NEW ENGINE, COSTING AROUND $8000. I ASKED A SECOND OPINION OF THE MECHANIC THAT HAS WORKED ON OUR CARS, AND HE THINKS HE WOULD NEED TO TAKE APART THE ENGINE AND FIGURE OUT HE PROBLEM, COSTING AROUND $2000-$3000, HE ALSO MENTIONED THE POSSIBILITY OF A NEW MOTOR. HONESTLY, I DO NOT RECALL RECEIVING INFORMATION ABOUT THE "SPECIAL POLICY ADJUSTMENT" FROM TOYOTA OR DEALER REGARDING CHECK-REPLACE THE ENGINES THAT ARE OR COULD BE DAMAGED FROM SLUDGE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE ENGINE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED DUE TO EXCESSIVE ENGINE SLUDGE. THERE WERE NO PRIOR WARNINGS. THE ENGINE FAILED AND HAD TO BE REPLACED AT A COST OF $5,000 DUE TO OIL SLUDGE BUILDUP. TRAVELING ON I-4 FROM TAMPA TO ORLANDO THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT APPEARED THEN WE HEARD A TAPPING FROM THE ENGINE,. I PULLED OFF THE ROAD AND AAA TOWED THE VEHICLE AND A RENTAL CAR COMPANY PICKED US UP. I HAD TWO ELDERLY PASSENGERS (IN THEIR 80'S) WITH WALKERS WHO HAD TO TRAVERSE THE GRASS ALONG THE INTERSTATE TO GET TO THE RENTAL CAR AND WERE NEARLY BLOWN OVER BY PASSING TRUCKS. TOYOTA REFUSED TO HONOR A CLAIM FOR REPAIRS ALTHOUGH THEY HAD AGREED IN A RECENT LOUISIANA LAWSUIT TO COVER SAID REPAIRS FOR 8 YEARS FROM DATE OF PURCHASE. MY FAILURE WAS 8 YEARS AND 10 MONTHS FROM PURCHASE. THE SLUDGE TOOK MUCH LONGER THAN 8 MONTHS TO BUILD UP BUT TOYOTA REFUSED TO HONOR THEIR STATED COMMITMENT TO ASSIST ALL AFFECTED BY OIL SLUDGE DAMAGE (OVER 3,000 COMPLAINTS). TOYOTA SIENNA BRAKES PEDAL GOES DOWN TO THE FLOOR GIVING NOT ENOUGH BRAKING TO STOP VEHICLE. THE BRAKE WORK HAS BEEN DONE ON THIS MINI-VAN THREE TIMES WITHIN LAST 2~3 YEARS AT TOYOTA DEALERSHIPS SERVICE CENTER BUT THE CONDITION HAS NOT BEEN IMPROVED. THE DEALERSHIP HAS WORKED ON BOTH FRONT(DISC BRAKES) AND REAR(DRUM BRAKES) INCLUDING PART REPLACED AND REPAIRED. BRAKE CYLINDERS AT REAR TIRES REPLACED. I OWN A 2001 TOYOTA SIENNA MINIVAN WITH 76,400 MILES. I HAVE OWNED THIS VEHICLE SINCE IT WAS NEW PURCHASED IN LATE 2000. # . ANYHOW, MY WIFE WAS DRIVING THE CAR NEAR OUR HOME ON AUGUST 2, HIT THE BRAKES MODERATELY HARD TO AVOID STRIKING A DEER, AND THE RIGHT FRONT BRAKE DISINTEGRATED. IT WAS REPLACED TODAY BY CHIPPEWA AUTO, LOCATED NEAR HERE. THEY TOLD ME, AND GAVE ME THE PIECES, THAT THE RIGHT FRONT ROTOR BROKE LOOSE FROM ITS MOUNTING AND BROKE IN HALF, BECAUSE OF CORROSION. FURTHERMORE THE LEFT FRONT ROTOR WAS IN DANGER OF DOING THE SAME, AND WAS CRACKED LOOSE FOR 2/3 OF IT CIRCUMFERENCE. I COULD SUPPLY YOU THE PIECES FOR BOTH ROTORS, OR I COULD SEND SEVERAL DIGITAL PHOTOS BY E-MAIL. CAR HAD BEEN DRIVEN FOR 15 MINUTES, BRAKES WORKED, WAS PARKED FOR 30 MINUTES AND UPON PULLING OUT OF DRIVEWAY REALIZED BRAKES DID NOT FUNCTION. WAS ABLE TO BRAKE THE CAR WITH PARKING BRAKE. NO ACCIDENT ENSUED, CALLED TOW TRUCK AND BROUGHT IT TO SERVICE CENTER. WAS TOLD THAT VACUUM HOSE CAME UNATTACHED, SO POWER ASSISTED BRAKES WERE NOT WORKING. *JB

PEOPLE COULD GET KILLED WHEN THE HORN WILL NOT WORK IN THE RAIN OR WATER. TOYOTA NEEDS TO HAVE A RECALL NOW TO SAVE THE LIVES OF MILLIONS OF MEN, WOMEN AND CHILDREN IN THE USA.

THE FAILURE OCCURRED FIFTEEN MINUTES AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS IN OPERATION. THE VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED BY TWO INDEPENDENT MECHANICS. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS UNDER THE AIR BAG REQUIRED REPLACEMENT. THE FAILURE CONTINUED TO OCCUR. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED WHEN THE COMPLAINT WAS FILED. I HAVE A SIGNIFICANT SAFETY ISSUE THAT DOES NOT FIT THE ORDINARY TYPE OF COMPLAINT. I BELIEVE THAT THE TIRE INDUSTRY IS PUTTING THOUSANDS OF DRIVERS AT RISK IN WINTER DRIVING BECAUSE OF POLICIES THAT IGNORE NORMAL DRIVING CONDITIONS. BECAUSE OF TEST ON VEHICLES THAT ARE SKIDDING OUT OF CONTROL THEY ARE MAKING POLICIES THAT PUT THE DRIVER AT RISK WHEN DRIVING IN SNOW. THEY RECOMMEND THAT TWO TIRES WITH GREATER TREAD ALWAYS BE INSTALLED ON THE REAR WHEELS. SKIDS ARE A RESULT OF DRIVING TOO FAST. HOWEVER IF YOU CANNOT MOVE THE CAR THEIR RECOMMENDATION IS OF ABSOLUTELY NO VALUE. IF YOU HAVE A FRONT WHEEL DRIVE VEHICLE IN DEEP SNOW AND CANNOT GET ENOUGH TRACTION YOU CANNOT MOVE. IF YOU ARE DRIVING AND A SNOW PLOW MAKE A PILE IN YOUR PATH IT MAY STOP YOUR CAN AND YOU MAY GET HIT IN THE BACKEND. IF YOU HAVE A STEEP HILL AND CAN'T GET UP YOU ARE A BIG HAZARD FOR ALL TRAFFIC BEHIND YOU. I TRY TO DRIVE WITH MY FRONT WHEELS IN MIND AND TO AVOID AT ALL COST LOSING TRACTION. MICHELIN X RADIAL TIRES (80,000 MILE TIRES) FROM SAM'S CLUB I HAD 4 MICHELIN X RADIAL TIRES ALL PURCHASED FROM SAM'S CLUB ON MY TOYOTA SIENNA. ALL 4 TIRES ARE DEFECTIVE. ON 9/10/10 MY SIENNA'S RIDE FELT BUMPY. I TOOK IT TO MY MECHANIC. HE SHOWED MY WHERE MY REAR DRIVER SIDE TIRE WAS SEPARATING DUE TO THE RADIAL BELT OF THE TIRE COMING LOSE. I TOOK MY SIENNA BACK TO SAM'S CLUB ON 9/10/10. SAM'S CLUB ALSO DIAGNOSED THE TIRE AS DEFECTIVE AND REPLACED IT. ON 9/28/10 MY REAR PASSENGER SIDE TIRE LOST A RADIAL BELT WHILE I WAS ON I-75 TRAVELING AT 70 MPH. I BROUGHT THE TIRE BACK TO SAM'S CLUB ON 9/29/10 AND THEY DIAGNOSED THE TIRE AS DEFECTIVE. ON 10/1/2010 I TOOK MY SIENNA TO MY MECHANIC FOR A SAFETY INSPECTION AND ALIGNMENT (SINCE MY ALIGNMENT WAS THROWN OUT WHEN THE TIRE STRIPPED ON THE HIGHWAY.) MY MECHANIC INSPECTED MY FRONT TIRES AND FOUND MULTIPLE SIGNS OF DEFECTIVE RADIAL BELTS IN BOTH FRONT TIRES. MY MECHANIC MARKED THE PECULIAR WEAR ON BOTH TIRES WITH CHALK. I REPLACED THE FRONT TIRES WITH A DIFFERENT BRAND. I TRIED TO RETURN THE TIRES TO SAM'S CLUB BECAUSE THEY WERE ONLY THREE YEARS OLD WITH LESS THAN 40,000 MILES ON THEM. WHEN I GET HOME IT DOES THE SAME THING AND I ALMOST CRASH INTO MY GARAGE BECAUSE THE CAR IS ACCELERATING ON ITS OWN AND AGAIN. IT WOULD ALWAYS HAPPEN AT RANDOM, AFTER I WOULD LET GO OF THE BRAKES ITS ALREADY MOVING FAST AS IF MY FOOT IS ON THE GAS, I SAY TO MY PASSENGER WHICH IS MY WIFE "LOOK THE VAN IS GOING ON IT'S OWN, I'M NOT EVEN PUSHING THE GAS" THE VAN WAS MOVING PRETTY FAST, BUT FAST ENOUGH FOR THE FLOW OF TRAFFIC FROM A STOP AND GO MOVEMENT. I NO LONGER DRIVE THE VAN BECAUSE I AM SCARED THAT I AM GOING TO GET INTO AN ACCIDENT AND I DON'T WANT THAT TO HAPPEN. OUR 2001 TOYOTA SIENNA HAS BEEN EXPERIENCING GAS PEDAL PROBLEMS FOR THE LAST TWO YEARS. FROM A STOPPED POSITION, THE GAS PEDAL STICKS UNTIL EXCESSIVE PRESSURE IS APPLIED. WHEN THE ACCELERATOR FINALLY ENGAGES, THE CAR LURCHES FORWARD. THIS PROBLEM MAKES THE VEHICLE FRIGHTENING TO DRIVE. THE FIRST TIME WE BROUGHT THE CAR TO THE TOYOTA SERVICE DEPARTMENT (TOYOTA OF SANTA MARIA, CALIFORNIA) ABOUT THIS ISSUE WAS FEBRUARY 2008 (ODOMETER 101,112). THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT TOLD US THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM BUT SERVICED THE THROTTLE BODY AND LUBRICATED THE EXPOSED THROTTLE CABLES. THE GAS PEDAL RESPONDED BETTER. IN NOVEMBER 2009 WE STARTED EXPERIENCING THE PROBLEM AGAIN AND ON DECEMBER 10, 2009 WE TOOK THE VEHICLE INTO THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT (ODOMETER 111,596). WE REQUESTED A SIMILAR SERVICE TO SEE IF IT WOULD FIX THE PROBLEM BUT THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT CLAIMED TO NOT KNOW WHAT THEY HAD DONE ON THE PREVIOUS VISIT TO 'FIX' THE STICKY GAS PEDAL. THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM AND WE TOOK THE VEHICLE HOME. WITHIN THE SAME DAY THE ACCELERATOR WAS STICKING. WE FELT UNSAFE DRIVING OUR TWO SMALL CHILDREN IN THE VEHICLE AND PARKED IT IN THE GARAGE FOR A MONTH UNTIL WE COULD TAKE IT BACK TO THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT. ON JANUARY 11, 2010 WE BROUGHT IT BACK AND INSISTED THEY FIX THE PROBLEM. THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. WE WERE ASSURED THAT THERE WAS NOTHING UNUSUAL WITH OUR VEHICLE, PERHAPS JUST SOME CARBON BUILD UP ON THE THROTTLE BODY PLATE. I OWN A 2001 TOYOTA SIENNA VAN CE. IN THE PAST 1.5 YEARS ALL DOOR HANDLES HAVE SEPARATED FROM THE CAR. THIS INCLUDES THE DRIVER, PASSENGER, REAR DRIVER, REAR PASSENGER AND TAILGATE DOORS HANDLES. THESE HANDLES ARE MADE FROM PLASTIC AND CRACK AND BREAK OFF AT THE HINGE POINT. I DON'T BELIEVE THE NUMBER OF BREAKAGES OF THESE HANDLES CAN BE CAUSED BY NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR AND CERTAINLY WITH TWO SMALL CHILDREN AND TWO ADULTS MAKING USE OF THE VEHICLE WOULD CONSTITUTE NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR. THIS PROBLEM IS A DEFECT OF DESIGN OR WORKMANSHIP OF THE HANDLE AND THE COST TO REPAIR IS APPROXIMATELY $350 PER HANDLE. ON OCTOBER 28,2006, MY SON AND I RETURNED TO THE SITE OF THE ACCIDENT, THE NC STATE HIGHWAY PATROL DRIVING TRACK. ONCE THROUGH REGISTRATION, WE RE-ENTERED THE 2001 TOYOTA SIENNA MINIVAN. UNFORTUNATELY, WE DID NOT USE THE SEAT BELTS, SINCE WE COULD SEE THE SPOT WE HAD BEEN ASSIGNED. SOMETIME DURING THIS MOVE, I MUST HAVE HAD A SEIZURE, SINCE THE ONLY THING I REMEMBER IS SOMEONE HELPING ME OUT OF THE DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR. ONCE AT THE HOSPITAL, I LAPSED INTO A COMA, WHICH WAS TO LAST FOR THE NEXT 18 DAYS. ONCE I WOKE UP, I WAS TOLD THAT MY SON HAD DIED, AND WAS BURIED. IT WAS STATED TO ME THAT WE WEREN'T WEARING OUR SEAT BELTS. I SAID, "WHAT ABOUT THE AIRBAGS?" THEY HADN'T DEPLOYED, IT TURNED OUT. I REALIZE THAT WE WOULD HAVE BEEN MORE SAFE IF WE HAD BEEN WEARING OUR SEAT BELTS. BUT I ALSO KNOW THAT THE AIRBAGS SHOULD HAVE DEPLOYED, SINCE THE ESTIMATED SPEED AT TIME OF IMPACT WAS 50 MPH. SINCE WE HAD GONE THROUGH A CREEK, AND SLAMMED INTO THE OPPOSITE CREEK BANK IN A BASIC HEAD ON COLLISION. ONCE I WAS ABLE TO USE A COMPUTER, I RESEARCHED AIRBAG FAILURES IN TOYOTA VEHICLES, AND FOUND NUMEROUS INCIDENTS AND ANECDOTES OF OTHER PEOPLES'S EXPERIENCE WITH THE SAME PROBLEM - FAILURE OF THE AIRBAGS TO DEPLOY, WHEN IT WAS CLEARLY OBVIOUS THAT THEY WERE NEEDED. I ALSO WONDERED ABOUT THE COMMONALITY OF THE PROBLEM, AND BEGAN TO SUSPECT A COMPANY-WIDE POLICY TO MAKE IT VERY HARD FOR THE AIRBAGS TO DEPLOY, SINCE IT WAS A HOT TOPIC THEN TO TALK ABOUT AIRBAGS AS AN ENEMY, SINCE SOME REPORTS WERE NOTING ACCIDENTS AND INJURIES ATTRIBUTED TO THE AIRBAGS' MIS-DEPLOYMENT. THIS WAS A FRONTAL IMPACT. THE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE WAS PUSHED UP TO THE ENGINE, HOWEVER THE AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY. THE SEAT BELTS WERE IN USE HOWEVER INJURIES WERE SUSTAINED TO THE DRIVER. THE AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT DID NOT ILLUMINATE. THE DEALERSHIP AND MANUFACTURER HAVE NOT BEEN ALERTED. THE POLICE WERE ALERTED TO THE SCENE AND A REPORT WAS FILED. WHEN DRIVING ON HIGHWAY I-87 OUR MOONROOF IN OUR MINIVAN STARTED TO BLOW OFF. LUCKILY MY HUSBAND WAS IN THE PASSENGER SEAT AND COULD HOLD THE GLASS WHILE I PULL OFF. WE IMMEDIATELY CALLED TOYOTA OF CLIFTON PARK TO TELL THEM AND TOOK IT THERE THE FOLLOWING MORNING. THEY GAVE US TWO OPTIONS, ONE FULL REPLACEMENT AT A COST OF APPROX 1,340 + TAX OR TO HAVE THEM ATTEMPT TO REPLACE THE GLUE AND WE WOULD HAVE TO LET IT "CURE" FOR A FEW DAYS. WE DIDN'T DRIVE IT FOR APPROX 8 DAYS AND TWO DAYS AFTER DRIVING IT, IT FLEW OFF AGAIN, THIS TIME I WAS ALONE AN COULDN'T GRAB IT AND IT BLEW OUT AND HIT ANOTHER VEHICLE CAUSING PROPERTY DAMAGE TO THAT CAR. WE TOLD TOYOTA ORIGINALLY THAT IT HAD TO BE A MANUFACTURING DEFECT, YOU DON'T DRIVE AROUND AND EXPECT THE WINDOWS TO BLOW OUT OF YOUR CAR. THEY SAID BECAUSE WE WERE OVER OUR 50000 MILES THEY WOULDN'T BE RESPONSIBLE. NOW IN ADDITION TO THEM NOT TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR A DEFECTIVE MOONROOF, THEY ALSO GAVE US BAD ADVISE ON FIXING IT. THEY TOLD US ONLY ONE VERY EXPENSIVE OPTION AND THEN ONE VERY CHEAP. ON 8/18/05 MORNING THE SHIFTER LEVER BEHIND THE STEERING WHEEL WAS BROKEN LOOSE THAT I HAD NO CONTROL OF THE GEARS. THEN I BROUGHT MY VAN TO STEVENS CREEK TOYOTA (SAN JOSE, CA) WHERE I BOUGHT THE SIENNA VAN FOR REPAIR. AFTER THE TOYOTA TECHNICIAN OPENED UP FOR INSPECTION, I LATER WENT THERE TO TOOK SOME PHOTOS OF THE CONDITIONS, I FOUND OUT THAT THE MAIN CAUSE FOR THE MALFUNCTION OF THE SHIFTER WAS A BIG PIECE OF CAST IRON (APPROX. 1/2" THICK) THAT SERVES AS A MAIN FRAME OR BRACKET FOR ALL OTHER COMPONENTS IN THE ASSEMBLY FOR SUPPORT OF THEIR MOVING MECHANISM BROKE IN HALF ( HAVE PHOTOS TO PROVE IT) LITERALLY. SINCE IT APPEARS AS A "DEFECTIVE PART" OF THE SHIFTER AND NOT A "WEAR & TEAR" CONDITION, I 'VE REQUESTED TOYOTA CORP. (BOTH LOCAL & HEADQUARTES) TO REPLACE IT WITH FREE OF CHARGE. THE REQUEST WAS DECLINED DUE TO WARRANTY POLICY BEYOND 30,000 MILES/ 3 YEAR. THEN TOYOTA CORP. THERE WAS AT THAT TIME RAW GASOLINE DRIPPING IN TEASPOON TO TABLESPOON QUANTITIES FROM A LINE IN FRONT OF THE FUEL TANK TO THE DRIVEWAY, WITH A PUDDLE ABOUT 18 BY 28 INCHES. I DROVE THE VEHICLE ABOUT 1 MILE WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING SMOOTHLY, AFTER WHICH FOR ABOUT 4 MILES THE ENGINE HESITATED AND SURGED AT SPEEDS OVER 35 MPH. THE REMAINDER OF THE 10 MILE TRIP, THE ENGINE RAN SMOOTHLY AGAIN. LATER THAT DAY, THE SERVICE REP CALLED TO TELL ME THEY HAD COMPLETED DIAGNOSTIC TESTING WHICH SHOWED A DEFECTIVE CHARCOAL CANISTER, WHICH NEEDED TO BE REPLACED FOR $552.76, AT 62,612 MILES. THE HORN ON THE SIENNA WORKS INTERMITTENTLY. THIS IS A VERY UNSAFE SITUATION WHEN DRIVING AS A HORN COULD POSSIBLY PREVENT AN ACCIDENT WITH A CAR OR PEDESTRIAN. FIRST HAD THE PROBLEM IN 2014, BUT WHEN WE BROUGHT IT TO TOYOTA, IT WOULD WORK, SO THEY COULDN'T CHECK IT OUT. IN APRIL 2015, THEY FINALLY THOUGHT IT WAS A DEFECTIVE SPIRAL CABLE, SO THEY REPLACED IT, TO THE TUNE OF $400+. THREE DAYS LATER, WE HAD THE PROBLEM AGAIN. WEREN'T ABLE TO BRING IT BACK UNTIL RECENTLY. REPLACED SPIRAL CABLE AGAIN. PROBLEM RETURNED BEFORE THE CAR MADE IT HOME. VEHICLE IS BACK IN SHOP. I BELIEVE THEY SAID THEY ARE REPLACING THE HORN PAD ASSEMBLY, WHICH WILL COST ANOTHER $150 FOR THE PART. THEY ARE NOT CHARGING FOR LABOR AS IT IS UNDER A 1 YEAR SERVICE WARRANTY. WE WANT TO FILE A COMPLAINT REGARDING THE LACK OF LOWER ANCHOR TETHERS AND BACK TETHERS FOR CHILDREN'S CARSEATS IN THE SECOND ROW PASSENGER SEAT IN OUR NEW 2002 TOYOTA MINIVAN. THE DEALER DID GIVE US THE OPTION TO RETURN THE VEHICLE, HOWEVER, WE WERE NOT ABLE TO FIND A HONDA ODYSSEY AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE. SO WE ARE STUCK WITH 1990 TECHNOLOGY ON A 2002 VEHICLE. 2001 TOYOTA SIENNA LE, PURCHASED NEW, STARTED HAVING PROBLEMS. "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT CAME ON WHEN VEHICLE HAD APPROXIMATELY 25,000 PLUS/MINUS MILES. UNDER WARRANTY, TOYOTA DEALERSHIP REPLACED THE OXYGEN SENSOR WITHOUT A CHARGE. HOWEVER, DURING THIS PROCESS, THE "BEEP" SIGNAL YOU HEAR WHEN LOCKING-UNLOCKING THE VEHICLE WITH REMOTE KEY WAS DISAPPEARED. THIS IS ALSO FIXED UNDER WARRANTY. THE "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN WHEN THE VEHICLE HAD ABOUT 35,000 MILES. TOYOTA DEALERSHIP SAID IT IS DUE TO A DIRTY VACUUM HOSE, THEY CLEANED IT WITH A CHARGE LITTLE OVER $100.00. THE NEXT DAY THE "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN, THIS TIME THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP SAID THEY NEED TO REPLACE THE CHARCOAL CANISTER (PARTS FREE, BUT WE HAVE TO PAY LABOR--ABOUT $100.00). WE OWN A 2001 TOYOTA SIENNA VAN, WE PURCHASED IT IN 2001 BUT IT WAS USED WITH 18,000 MILES ON IT. SINCE PURCHASING THE VEHICLE, SEVERAL THINGS HAVE GONE WRONG. #1- PASSENGER SIDE POWER WINDOW HAD A DEFECTIVE MOTOR AND WOULD NOT GO BACK UP. TOOK IT TO THE DEALER WHO SAID IT WAS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY, SO WE HAD TO PAY OUT OF POCKET FOR THAT REPAIR. #2- DRIVER'S SIDE SLIDING DOOR WOULD NOT LATCH SHUT. THE BUTTON GOT STUCK FROM THE INSIDE WHICH PREVENTED THE DOOR FROM LATCHING SHUT. THIS HAD HAPPENED MANY TIMES BEFORE BUT WE WERE ABLE TO GET THE BUTTON POPPED OUT AND THE DOOR WOULD SHUT. BUT ON ONE OCCASION THE BUTTON POPPED OUT AND THE DOOR STILL WOULD NOT SHUT. WE HAD TO DRIVE HOME HOLDING THE DOOR SHUT THE ENTIRE WAY! OF COURSE, THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE WITH OUR 2 YOUNG CHILDREN IN THE CAR. THE PROBLEM WAS FIXED AT THE DEALER (AGAIN NOT UNDER WARRANTY), BUT THE DOOR STILL CAN NOT BE OPENED FROM THE INSIDE, OR THE BUTTON GETS STUCK IN. #3- CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND A DIAGNOSTIC TEST REVEALED THE FOLLOWING PROBLEMS- IDLE AIR CONTROL, BANK 1 SENSOR (MOST LIKELY OXYGEN SENSOR), LEAKY CHARCOAL CANISTER. WE FIXED THE IDLE AIR CONTROL SINCE THAT WAS CAUSING THE VAN TO NOT START AND STALL. THIS REPAIR WAS ALMOST $700, AND NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY BECAUSE WE HAD GONE OVER 36,000 MILES. WE DID NOT FIX THE OTHER TWO PROBLEMS LAST MONTH DUE TO COST. THE VAN OVERHEATS AND CAN NOT BE DRIVEN. WE WROTE A LETTER TO TOYOTA AND TALKED TO THEM VIA PHONE. THEY TOLD US THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO BECAUSE OUR VAN IS NOT A LEGAL US VAN- IT IS WAS BUILT IN CANADA. WE BOUGHT IT AT A TOYOTA DEALER IN ROCHESTER, NY AND WERE NEVER TOLD IT WAS CANADIAN. WE WERE ALSO TOLD THAT NO WARRANTY WOULD EVER BE COVERED IN THE US BECAUSE IT IS CANADIAN. CARFAX.COM SAYS IT WAS BUILT IN THE UNITED STATES HOWEVER. I AM SENDING THIS LETTER TO EXPRESS CONCERN RELATIVE TO THE SAFETY AND USABILITY OF OUR 2001 TOYOTA SIENNA MINI VAN. WE HAVE HAD CONTINUED PROBLEMS WITH THE VAN THAT HAS BEEN ADDRESSED WITH THE DEALER (KENNY KENT TOYOTA IN EVANSVILLE, IN) AS WELL AS TOYOTA. THE ENGINE IS OUR BRAND NEW VAN HAD GELLING ISSUES TO DUE MANUFACTURE?S DEFECTS. THE PROBLEMS ARE CONTINUING TO DATE. IN THE MANUFACTURE?S RESPONSE IT STATES THAT TOYOTA OFFERED GOODWILL ASSISTANCE TO US FOR THE ENGINE GELLING. (THIS HAPPENED TO A BRAND NEW VAN). IT ALSO STATES THAT THIS WAS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. TOYOTA SAID THAT THIS WAS A WARRANTY ISSUE AND IT IS ALSO LISTED AS WARRANTY IN TOYOTA DOCUMENTATION. ACCORDING TO THE OWNER?S WARRANTY INFORMATION BOOK, THE BASIC WARRANTY IS 36 MONTHS OR 36,000 MILES AND THE POWER TRAIN WARRANTY IS 60 MONTHS OR 60,000 MILES. THE DEFECT WITH THE ENGINE BASED UPON THE WARRANTY AS STATED IN TOYOTA?S WARRANTY INFORMATION BOOK STATES THAT ALL REPAIRS AND ADJUSTMENTS NEEDED TO CORRECT DEFECTS IN MATERIALS AND WORKMANSHIP OF ANY PART SUPPLIED BY TOYOTA IS COVERED. IN THE MANUFACTURE?S RESPONSE IT STATES THAT THE VEHICLE IS NOT EXHIBITING ANY WARRANTABLE NONCONFORMITIES THAT SUBSTANTIALLY IMPAIR THE USE, VALUE OR SAFETY OF THE VEHICLE. UNFORTUNATELY THIS STATEMENT IS NOT TRUE. WE HAVE CONTINUED TO HAVE EXTREME ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS WITH THE VAN. THESE PROBLEMS ARE CONTINUING TO DATE FOLLOWING TOYOTA?S ATTEMPTS TO REPAIR THE ENGINE. ON ONE OCCASION MY WIFE AND MY SIX-YEAR OLD DAUGHTER WERE IN THE VAN ALONE WHEN THE VAN REFUSED TO START. IT WAS A 90+-DEGREE DAY. TOYOTA SERVICE CANNOT FIND THE CAUSE AND PROBLEMS CONTINUE. THE ENGINE DOESN?T HAVE THE POWER IT DID PRIOR TO THE REPAIRS, THE VALVES CLATTER VERY LOUDLY AND THE ENGINE MAKES A CHUGGING SOUND WHEN IT IDLES. HILD SAFETY LOCKS ON REAR SLIDING DOORS ARE BYPASSED AND RENDERED USELESS BY REAR POWER DOOR BUTTONS. WITH THE CHILD SAFETY LOCKS ENGAGED THE SLIDING DOORS CAN NOT BE OPENED MANUALLY FROM THE INSIDE. HOWEVER THE REAR POWER DOOR BUTTONS LOCATED ON THE REAR DOORS, ON THE FRONT CONSOLE, AND ON THE REMOTE ALL FUNCTION NORMALLY. THERE IS A SEPARATE BUTTON ON THE FRONT CONSOLE THAT DEACTIVATES THE POWER DOOR FUNCTION, BUT IT DEACTIVATES IT FROM ALL 3 POINTS (BUTTONS ON THE REAR DOORS, ON THE FRONT CONSOLE, AND ON THE REMOTE) RENDERING THE EXPENSIVE POWER DOOR FEATURE USELESS. TO COMPLY WITH THE CHILD SAFETY LOCK REQUIREMENT, WHEN THE CHILD SAFETY LOCK IS ENGAGED IT SHOULD DISABLE MANUAL OPENING OF THE DOOR BY BACKSEAT OCCUPANTS AND SHOULD DISABLE THE POWER DOOR BUTTONS LOCATED ON THE BACK DOORS WITHIN EASY REACH OF BACKSEAT OCCUPANTS. MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED, BUT HAS FAILED TO FOLLOWUP OR OFFER ANY SOLUTION (TOYOTA CASE # 2003 1204 0595). POWER DOORS CLOSE TOO HARD AND POSE SERIOUS INJURY RISK TO CHILDREN. POWER DOORS CLOSE HARD ENOUGH TO EASILY HURT AN ADULT. MY TWO YEAR OLD SON WAS INJURED WHEN HE ACTIVATED THE POWER DOOR BUTTON LOCATED IN THE BACK SEAT AND MANAGED TO CLOSE THE DOOR ON HIS ARM. MULTIPLE DEALERS HAVE INFORMED ME THAT THE POWER DOORS ARE NOT ADJUSTABLE AND THEREFORE CANNOT BE CHANGED. MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED, BUT HAS FAILED TO FOLLOWUP OR OFFER ANY SOLUTION (TOYOTA CASE # 2003 1204 0595). TIRE PRESSUE MONITORING SYSTEM MALFUNCTIONS. IT FAILS TO WARN OF LOW PRESSURE IN TIRES (TESTED TO 15 LBS BELOW APPROPRIATE TIRE PRESSURE ON EACH TIRE INDIVIDUALLY AND THEN ON ALL 4 TIRES SIMULTANEOUSLY). HOWEVER, THE WARNING LIGHT DOES COME ON WHEN DESCENDING FROM HIGH ALTITUDES IN SPITE OF ALL TIRES BEING INFLATED PROPERLY. MULTIPLE DEALERS HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO UNDERSTAND AND FIX THE PROBLEM. WITHIN ONE WEEK OF OWNERSHIP, THE VEHICLE STARTED TO BOG DOWN WHEN MAKING A TURN FROM A DEAD STOP. A DAY LATER THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. THE PROBLEM WAS BROUGHT TO THE DEALERS ATTENTION AND THE REPLY WAS THAT; "WE DON'T KNOW WHAT'S WRONG, WHEN WE FIND OUT WE'LL LET YOU KNOW...UNTIL THEN, BE CAREFUL" THAT WAS OVER A MONTH AGO AND I HAVEN'T HEARD ANYTHING FROM THEM. I CALLED TO FIND OUT WHAT WAS GOING ON AND WAS TOLD THAT THEY STILL DIDN'T HAVE A CLUE WHAT WAS WRONG. THE VEHICLE IS UNPREDICTABLE WHEN TAKING OFF AND HAS ALREADY RESULTED IN A COUPLE OF CLOSE CALLS WHEN PULLING OUT INTO TRAFFIC. THE GENERAL ATTITUDE IS NONCHALANT AND NOBODY HAS MADE ANY ATTEMPT TO NOTIFY ME OF ANYTHING. FROM WHAT I WAS TOLD BY THE DEALERSHIP. ALL THE 2001 HIGHLANDERS ARE EXPERIENCING THE SAME PROBLEM.
