EVERY DOOR HANDLE ON THE VEHICLE HAS BROKEN FROM THE INSIDE AND OUTSIDE. ALMOST EVERY TOYOTA SIENNA I SEE ON THE ROAD HAD ATLEAST ONE OF THERE HANDLES BROKEN OFF. I REALLY THINK TOYOTA SHOULD HAVE A RECALL ON THIS. THE DOOR HAS ACTUALLY SWUNG OPEN WHILE I WAS DRIVING BECAUSE I COULD NOT TELL IF IT WAS CLOSED PROPER. ABOUT 3 YEARS AGO, THE DRIVER'S SIDE SLIDING DOOR STOPPED FUNCTIONING PROPERLY. IT WOULD NOT OPEN THE MAJORITY OF TIME. NOW, IT DOESN'T OPEN AT ALL. WHEN THE HANDLE IS PULLED FROM EITHER THE INSIDE OR OUTSIDE, THE DOOR APPEARS TO LOCK AND WILL NOT OPEN. TOYOTA WANTED ABOUT $100 TO ATTEMPT TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM. ABOUT A MONTH AGO, THE CABLE ON THE POWER SLIDING PASSENGER SIDE DOOR SNAPPED. THE DOOR STILL WORKS MANUALLY, THANKFULLY. TOYOTA WANTS OVER $1,000 DOLLARS TO FIX THIS. MY SON WAS DRIVING THE VAN WHEN AN INDIVIDUAL CUT IN FRONT OF HIM PROMPTING MY SON TO PUT ON HIS BRAKES TO AVOID CONTACT WHICH HE DID (THANK GOD). SINCE WE PURCHASED THE CAR WE HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE BRAKES SQUEEKING. WE HAVE HAD THE BRAKES REPLACED MULTIPLE TIMES AND HAVE EVEN UPGRADED THE BRAKES TO AN IMPROVED QUALITY BRAKE PADS BY THE DEALER. HOWEVER THE BRAKES HAVE GOTTEN WORSE AS THE CAR HAS GOTTEN OLDER. THE BRAKE PEDAL IS VERY SPONGY AND TENDS TO GO DOWN TO THE FLOOR WHEN STOPPING. WHEN STOPPING IN EMERGENCY SITUATIONS THE BRAKES MAKE A HORRIBLE CRUNCHING NOISE. SINCE DECEMBER 2010 I HAVE HAD 3 INSTANCES WHERE I NEEDED TO STOP QUICKLY. EACH TIME THE BRAKES MADE THE CRUNCHING NOISE AND THE BRAKING DISTANCE WAS LONGER THAN WOULD BE EXPECTED. *TT

WE HAVE OWNED THIS 2002 TOYOTA SIENNA SINCE 2002. THE BRAKES HAVE ALWAYS SQUEALED WHEN STOPPING GRADUALLY, AND THE DEALER SAID THAT SIENNA BRAKES ALL SQUEAL. THERE HAVE BEEN ONLY A FEW INSTANCES OVER THE PREVIOUS 9 YEARS WHEN THE ABS HAS ACTIVATED AND I HAD ALWAYS FELT THAT THE ABS ON THIS WAS MUCH SUPERIOR TO THE MAZDA PROTEGE THAT WE OWNED. HOWEVER IN THE PAST MONTH OR TWO, THE ABS ACTIVATED ABOUT 3 OR 4 TIMES, ON SLIGHTLY RAPID STOPS, UNDER DRY DRIVING CONDITIONS. YESTERDAY EVENING, UNDER DRY DRIVING CONDITIONS, WHEN PULLING OUT OF A STOP LIGHT, I NOTICED THE SUV AHEAD SLOWING DOWN AND BEGAN BRAKING, THEN SWITCHED TO THE ACCELERATOR FOR A FRACTION OF A SECOND WHEN IT SEEMED THAT THEY MIGHT START ACCELERATING, THEN WHEN THEY BRAKE HARD, I TOO SLAMMED ON MY BRAKES. THE ABS KICKED IN, BUT THE CAR SEEMED TO KEEP MOVING AND THE CRASH HAPPENED IN SLOW MOTION - IT WAS JUST AS I FELT IN THE MAZDA PROTEGE, WHEN THE ABS KICKED IN WHILE TRYING TO STOP ON AN ICY ROAD - THE CAR KEPT MOVING WITHOUT SEEMING TO SLOW DOWN. I AM NOT SURE, BUT ALSO HAVE A VAGUE SENSE THAT THE ENGINE CONTINUED TO WORK HARD TO PULL THE CAR FORWARD, POSSIBLY LIKE THE UNINTENDED ACCELERATION REPORTED BY OTHERS IN A RECENT SPATE OF ACCIDENTS. I WAS STANDING ON THE BRAKE WHEN MY CAR PLOWED UNDER THE REAR FENDER OF THE CHEVY TAHOE AHEAD, CAUSING THE RADIATOR, BATTERY, ETC. TO GET SMASHED. THIS WAS WHEN IT WAS CLEAR THAT THE ENGINE WAS STILL RACING AND TRYING TO PULL THE CAR FORWARD - I FINALLY CUT THE IGNITION TO KILL THE ENGINE. MY INSURANCE COMPANY CALLED EDY'S TOYOTA, WITH ME ON THE LINE, TO SEE IF THEY COULD READ THE CAR COMPUTER TO CHECK THE CAUSE OF THE ACCIDENT. IS TOYOTA 2002 SIENNA SAFE TO DRIVE? AS OF FEBRURAY 2010, WE STILL OBSERVE SLIPPAGE DURING STOPS AT SLOW SPEEDS. THE BRAKES PULSATE WHEN APPLIED SLOWLY. THIS IS A PROBLEM THAT COMES AND GOES. IN DECEMBER 2007, WE REPORTED THE FOLLOWING PROBLEMS TO THE DEALER 1) ABS AND LOW TIRE PRESSURE WARNING LIGHTS TURN ON AND OFF 2) CRUNCHING SOUND HEARD WHEN BRAKING WITH DELAYED BRAKING ACTION, PARTICULARLY IN COLD, RAINY WEATHER. THE DEALER FOUND NO SIGNAL AT RIGHT REAR SPEED SENSOR, AND RECOMMENDED REPLACING ABS ACTUATOR (WHICH WE DID) -- TOTAL COST APPROX. $2,000.00, BUT INSISTED THAT THIS WAS A "FLUKE." VAN HAD 66,481 MILES AT THE TIME. PROBLEM WITH BRAKING STILL OCCURS, THOUGH NO WARNING LIGHTS APPEAR. I HAVE TAKEN MY 2002 SIENNA TO THE DEALERSHIP (LAST WINTER) BECAUSE THE BRAKES HAVE FAILED IN VERY COLD WEATHER. THE FAILURE HAS HAPPENED THREE TIMES, MOST RECENTLY THIS PAST SUNDAY MORNING. THE FIRST TWO TIMES THE VEHICLE HAD BEEN PARKED OUTSIDE IN BELOW ZERO TEMPS FOR A FEW HOURS. I BACKED OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY (NO PROBLEM BRAKING IN REVERSE)...ALL WAS WELL. HOWEVER AS I DROVE TOWARD THE STOP SIGN IT WAS AS THOUGH THE POWER WAS ALL GONE FROM THE BRAKING SYSTEM. I PUSHED THEM TO THE FLOOR AND HELD THEM THERE AND EVENTUALLY IT STOPPED BEFORE I WAS TOO FAR OUT INTO THE INTERSECTION. IT HAS HAPPENED TWICE, UNDER EXACTLY THE SAME CONDITIONS OVER THE LAST TWO WINTERS. THE DEALERSHIP COULD FIND NOTHING WRONG. THIS PAST SUNDAY MORNING I HAD MY TWO YOUNGEST CHILDREN IN THE CAR AND WE WERE HEADED TO CHURCH. AS I BEGAN TO BRAKE FOR THE STOP SIGN AHEAD, AGAIN THE SAME THING HAPPENED. I HAD TO HOLD THEM TO THE FLOOR AND BARELY ESCAPED ENTERING THE INTERSECTION. IT FRIGHTENED ALL OF US. THIS TIME THE CAR HAD BEEN INSIDE THE GARAGE. THE FIRST TWO TIMES THIS HAPPENED I DID RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET TO SEE IF ANYONE ELSE WAS HAVING THIS PROBLEM AND FOUND NOTHING. AFTER THIS SUNDAY MORNING I LOOKED AGAIN AND NOW SEE THAT DIFFERENT AND NEWER TOYOTA MODELS HAVE BEEN FOUND TO HAVE PROBLEMS BRAKING IN COLD WEATHER. I CAN'T HELP BUT WONDER IF I MAY BE DEALING WITH THE SAME ISSUE. I'M REALLY HOPING YOU CAN HELP ME WITH THIS. I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE THIS VAN, NOT JUST FOR OUR OWN SAFETY BUT THAT OF OTHERS. WITHIN A YEAR AFTER BUYING THE 2002 TOYOTA SIENNA THE RIGHT SIDE SLIDING DOOR COULD NOT BE OPENED FROM INSIDE. THE LEFT SIDE DOOR HAS THE SAME PROBLEM INTERMITTANTLY. NEITHER ONE HAS BEEN REPAIRED BUT ARE SEEN AS A SAFETY CONCERN IN THE WORST CASE AND A CONSTANT NUISANCE OTHERWISE. THE ISSUE WAS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY AND SO REMAIN. THE REAR DOOR PLASTIC LATCH BROKE AFTER ABOUT FOUR YEARS, REQUIRING A $200 REPAIR. IT BROKE AGAIN AFTER ABOUT THREE MORE YEARS BUT THIS TIME I REPAIRED IT WITH A METAL SCREW, BUT A YEAR LATER IT BROKE IN ANOTHER PLACE AND CANNOT BE REPAIRED. THE PART IS MADE OF SLIGHTLY SOFT BRITTLE PLASTIC, POORLY DESIGNED. INTERESTINGLY, I RECENTLY BOUGHT A NEW TOYOTA PRIUS AND PURCHASED AN EXTENDED WARRANTY. READING THE FINE PRINT I FIND IN THE RATHER LONG LIST OF EXCLUSIONS FROM THE "BUMPER TO BUMPER" WARRANTY ARE INCLUDED DOOR LATCHES AS WELL AS, IRONICALLY, THE BUMPERS. *TT

TL- THE CONTACT OWNS 2002 TOYOTA SIENNA. THE CONTACT STATED THE REAR LIFT GATE ON THE VEHICLE WILL NOT OPEN BECAUSE THE LATCH IS BROKEN. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND WAS TOLD THERE IS A PLASTIC LINK TO THE LATCH THAT HAD BROKEN AND PREVENTS THE REAR LIFT GATE FROM OPENING FROM THE INSIDE AND OUTSIDE. THE FAILURE WAS 175,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 183,000.RL

WE HAD SOME TRANSMISSION WORK DONE ON OUR 2002 TOYOTA SIENNA. AFTER THAT WORK WAS COMPLETED THE DOOR LOCKS ON THE VAN AUTOMATICALLY AND REPEATEDLY LOCK WITH OUT INTERVENTION . THIS HAPPENS WHEN THE CAR IS PARKED, TURNED OFF AND WHILE DRIVING. WE HAVE TAKEN IT TO THE DEALERSHIP TWICE WHILE IT WAS HAPPENING AND THEY CAN'T FIGURE OUT HOW TO FIX IT. BOUGHT A CERTIFIED USED 2002 TOYOTA SIENNA XLE FROM A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP IN JULY 2007. WHILE INSPECTING IT, THE DRIVER'S SIDE SLIDING DOOR WAS ACTING UP. THEY TRIED TO FIX IT A COUPLE OF TIMES THEN VERBALLY ASKED ME TO BRING IT BACK WHEN THEY HAD THE RIGHT PARTS. 2 WEEKS LATER, I BROUGHT IT IN AT THEIR REQUEST AND THEY 'FIXED' IT. I OWN A 2002 TOYOTA SIENNA WHICH I PURCHASED AS A "CERTIFIED USED VEHICLE" IN JANUARY 2008. I WASN'T INFORMED ABOUT THE PROBLEMS THESE PARTICULAR VEHICLES WERE HAVING WITH OIL SLUDGE BUILD UP. SHORTLY AFTER JANUARY 2010, I CHECKED MY OIL AND FOUND THE OIL TO BE GUMMY. I TOOK IT IN FOR A PROPER OIL CHANGE (THOUGH IT WAS UNDER THE 3000 MILE MARK FOR AN OIL CHANGE). I CHECKED THE OIL AGAIN AFTER ONLY DRIVING 100 MILES OR SO, AND FOUND THE SAME GUMMY OIL BUILD UP. I STOPPED DRIVING IT AS SOON AS I NOTICED WHITE SMOKE COMING OUT OF THE EXHAUST. I DIDN'T HAVE THE MONEY TO TAKE IT TO A MECHANIC AT THE TIME, AS I WAS WAITING FOR MY TAX RETURN CHECK TO ARRIVE. AS SOON AS I HAD THE MONEY TO GET IT DIAGNOSED, I WAS TOLD THAT I WOULD NEED A NEW ENGINE, WHICH WOULD COST $7000! MY MECHANIC TOLD ME OF THE ONGOING PROBLEMS MY TYPE OF VEHICLE WAS HAVING AND SUGGESTED I CALL THE CUSTOMER SUPPORT CENTER OF TOYOTA. BECAUSE I WAS NEVER INFORMED BY TOYOTA (I BOUGHT MY VEHICLE IN 2008, SEVERAL YEARS AFTER A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT WAS IMPLEMENTED AGAINST TOYOTA) MY WARRANTY HAD ALREADY EXPIRED BY THE TIME I STARTED HAVING PROBLEMS. I FEEL MISINFORMED AND RIPPED OFF BY BOTH THE DEALERSHIP AND TOYOTA AS A WHOLE. I STILL OWE OVER $9000 ON MY LOAN AND DO NOT HAVE A VEHICLE TO DRIVE MY FIVE CHILDREN AROUND IN SAFELY. TOYOTA IS RISKING THE LIVES AND LOYALTY OF MILLIONS OF CONSUMERS AND SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE TO PROTECT THE CITIZENS OF THIS COUNTRY. IDLE CONTROL VALVE FAILURE. PREVENTS CAR FROM IDLING CORRECTLY. CAR WILL START AND THEN CUT OFF RIGHT AFTER YOU DRIVE OFF. POTENTIALLY CAUSING YOU TO GET HIT BY OTHER VEHICLES. THIS HAPPENED ON MY 2002 SIENNA AT 40K MILE AND CONTINUOUSLY SINCE. I KNOW OF 4 OTHER PEOPLE WITH THIS PROBLEM. MY MECHANIC HAD ABOUT 10 OR THESE DEFECTIVE PARTS IN HIS SHOP AND HE SAID THAT HE REPLACES THESE ALL THE TIME ON ALL THE TOYOTAS. I TOOK MY CAR TO THE FREMONT TOYOTA DEALER AND THE SERVICE REP SAID THE FAILURE RATE WAS SO HIGH THAT THERE WAS A NATIONWIDE SHORTAGE FOR THIS PART AND THAT IT WOULD TAKE 2 MONTHS FOR THE PART TO BE AVAILABLE. THE DUBLIN CA, TOYOTA DEALER WAS ALSO WELL AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM OF THE IDLE CONTROL VALVE. IT'S A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION FOR ALL OPERATORS OF SIENNAS, CAMRYS, AND OTHER TOTOTA VEHICLES WITH THIS IDLE CONTROL VALVE. *NM

I HAVE 2002 TOYOTA SIENNA. THE CAR WAS PERFECT UNTIL AFTER 30K MILES. WE FIRST NOTICED THE CAR OCCASIONALLY HAD DIFFICULTY OF STARTING DURING WARM WEATHER OR WARM ENGINE CONDITION. THEN THE SITUATION GOT WORST, THE NO STARTING GOT MORE OFTEN. WE EVEN GOT STUCK IN THE FREEWAY AND BUSY STREET BECAUSE WE STOPPED THE CAR AND HAD A LOT OF DIFFICULTY TO GET THE CAR STARTED AGAIN. THE SITUATION COULD BE DANGEROUS IN A TRAFFIC BUSY LOCATION. I HAVE TWO FRIEND WHO HAVE SIENNA AND THEY BOTH HAD THE SIMILAR PROBLEMS WITH THEIR SIENNA. THE USUAL SYMPTOM OF THE PROBLEM: THE CAR TAKES MORE CRACKING TO START AND THEN ITS RPM IMMEDIATELY DROPS TO 400-200RPM AND THEN THE ENGINE DIES; SOME TIMES PUSHING ON THE ACCELERATOR WOULD HELP RAISING THE RPM AND GOT THE CAR REALLY STARTED; AT SOME OTHER TIMES, THE ENGINE WOULD NOT START AT ALL UNTIL THE ENGINEER COOLS DOWN AND/OR THE WEATHER COOLS DOWN; TODAY, IT HAPPENED AGAIN IN AN OUTDOOR PARKING LOT. I BOUGHT A TOYOTA SAQUOIA LIMITED 4X4 USED IN 2003. WHEN I TOOKIT TO A FRIENDS HOUSE HER HUSBAND SIAD I SHOULD GET THAT TICKING NOISE CHECKED OUT. I TOLD HIM THAT ALL OF THE SUV'S AT THE DEALERSHIP MADE THE TICKING NOISE. WELL, HE WAS RIGHT. WHEN I TOOK IT IN TO BE INSPECTED I WAS TOLD THAT I HAD A CRACKED MANIFOLD. THE MECHANIC SAID THAT ALL OF THE TOYOTA SUV'S AND TRUCKS HAVE PROBLEMS WITH THEIR MANIFOLDS. IF THIS IS TRUE, WHY HAVE THEY NOT DONE A RECALL TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM? I MANIFOLD IS NOT A CHEAP PART TO REPLACE.

I PURCHASED COOPER LIFE LINER TOURING TIRES FROM KAUFFMAN TIRE. WITHIN 2 WEEKS OF PURCHASE, ONE OF THE TIRES DEVELOPED A LARGE BUBBLE ON THE SIDEWALL. KAUFFMAN STAFF TOLD ME THIS TYPE OF BUBBLE WAS A RESULT OF "HITTING A CURB OR OTHER OBJECT." I KNEW I HAD NOT HIT ANYTHING. THEY REPLACED THE TIRE WITH THE SAME BRAND & MODEL. AS TIME WENT BY, I HAD CHRONIC PROBLEMS WITH MY VEHICLE PULLING TO THE RIGHT. I VISITED KAUFFMAN SEVERAL TIMES. THEY ADJUSTED MY ALIGNMENT AND CHECKED MY TIRE PRESSURE ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS, TO NO AVAIL. TUESDAY, JULY 3, 2007, I STOPPED BY KAUFFMAN AND TOLD THEM THERE WAS APPARENTLY AN UNDERLYING PROBLEM THAT CAUSED MY VAN TO PULL SO SEVERELY THAT I HAD TO STRUGGLE TO KEEP IN MY LANE. I REQUESTED THAT THEY DO AN IN-DEPTH CHECK TO DETERMINE THE PROBLEM. THEY FOUND THAT 3 OF THE 4 COOPER LIFE LINER TOURING TIRES WERE DEFECTIVE, ONE HAD A BUBBLE IN THE SIDEWALL. KAUFFMAN EMPLOYEE AGAIN TOLD ME THAT THIS TYPE OF PROBLEM WAS CAUSED BY STRIKING A CURB OR OTHER OBJECT. AGAIN, I KNEW I HAD NOT HIT THE TIRE ON ANYTHING. KAUFFMAN EMPLOYEES REPLACED THE TIRES WITH 3 NEW COOPER LIFE LINER TOURING TIRES. ON JULY 6, 2007, ONE OF THE NEW TIRES DEVELOPED A HUGE BUBBLE IN THE SIDEWALL AND LEFT ME STRANDED ON THE SIDE OF I-20 IN ALABAMA. AN INTERNET SEARCH LED ME TO YOUR WEBSITE, WHERE I FOUND THAT THE TIRES KAUFFMAN PUT ON MY VEHICLE IN 2007 WERE RECALLED IN 2006. I HOPE YOU WILL BE ABLE TO HELP ME OUT. MY SIENNA HAS 61022 MILEAGES ON IT AND WE BABY THIS CAR TO THE 'T'. ON FEBRUARY 11, 2008, I HAD JUST STARTED THE VEHICLE AND WAS ABOUT TO CHANGE FROM 'P' TO 'D' WHEN THE GEAR SHIFT LEVER BROKE. NO FORCE WAS USED AND WE ALWAYS PULL BACK THE SHIFTER AND CHANGE GEARS WITH MINIMAL FORCE. I HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE DEALER AND THE TECHNICIAN SHOWED ME WHERE THE ALUMINUM BRACKETS BROKE IN THREE PLACES. I WAS IN SHOCK THAT THE DESIGN AND MATERIAL WAS NOT MADE ENGINEERED TO LAST. THE TECHNICIAN SAID THAT THE MATERIAL IS MADE OF ALUMINUM AND HE JUST REPLACED ONE A COUPLE OF DAYS AGO. I DID SOME RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET AND FOUND OUT THIS IS NOT A SINGLE CASE. THERE ARE A LOT OF PEOPLE WHO HAD THIS SAME PROBLEM ON THEIR SIENNA WORLDWIDE? NORMALLY, THE PART SHOULD LAST THE LIFE OF THE VEHICLE. I START TO WONDER IF THIS IS A DEFECT BECAUSE IT IS HAPPENING ON LOTS OF SIENNAS. ALSO THIS REPAIR IS EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE. IT COST ME $834.69.00 US DOLLAR. ONE WEEK AGO I WAS RUNNING ERRANDS WITH THE TOYOTA SEQUOIA, BUT THE CAR REFUSED TO START ONCE I COMPLETED MY ERRANDS. EVENTUALLY, THE CAR HAD TO BE TOWED AND THE REPAIR SHOP REPORTED THAT THE GEAR SHIFT BRACKET AND LEVER WERE BROKEN AND THEREFORE PREVENTED THE GEAR FROM PROPERLY GOING INTO PARK. IT FIRST STARTED WHEN THE TRUNK WOULD NOT OPEN ANY MORE. THE LITTLE PIECE TO CLICK IT OPEN BROKE OFF. NEXT, THE RIGHT PASSENGER SLIDING DOOR WOULD NOT OPEN FROM THE INSIDE, BUT COULD BE OPENED FROM THE OUTSIDE. EVENTUALLY, THE OUTSIDE HANDLE BROKE OFF (PROBABLY DUE THE INABILITY TO OPEN IT FROM THE INSIDE). NEXT THE LEFT PASSENGER SLIDING DOOR STARTED TO SHOW SIMILARITIES TO THE RIGHT SLIDING PASSENGER DOOR. EVENTUALLY, THIS HANDLE BROKE OFF AS WELL AND WOULD NOT OPEN FROM THE INSIDE. TO DATE, THE SLIDING DOOR ON THE LEFT OR THE RIGHT CAN NOT BE OPENED INSIDE OR OUT. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE FOR US AND OUR FOUR KIDS. THE KIDS HAVE TO COME THROUGH THE FRONT TO GET OUT OF THE VAN. IT BECAME SOMEWHAT STRANGE TO ME WHEN I NOTICED THAT OTHER TOYOTA SIENNA MINIVANS HAD HANDLES MISSING OFF THE BACK PASSENGER SLIDING DOORS. I THOUGHT, WHAT IS UP WITH THE QUALITY OF THE VANS? MOST INDIVIDUALS DRIVING MINIVANS ARE TRANSPORTING CHILDREN, SO I WOULD ASSUME THAT THE VANS WERE CONSTRUCTED TO HANDLE THE CONSTANT OPENING AND CLOSING THAT OCCURS FROM THE BACK PASSENGERS. I THINK THIS PROBLEM SHOULD BE ADDRESSED IN A FAIR WAY. WHEN WE WENT TO INQUIRE ABOUT THE TRUNK WE WERE TOLD THAT IT WOULD COST OVER $200, SO WE TOOK THE OPTIONAL ROUTE OF LOADING GROCERIES, LUGGAGE, ETC. FROM THE INSIDE. THE DOOR INCIDENTS HAVE HAPPENED THIS YEAR, 2010. WE HAVE OWNED OTHER VEHICLES WITH THE KIDS, NAMELY 1997 HONDA ODYSSEY THAT DID NOT HAVE ANY OF THE HANDLES MISSING OR ANY PROBLEMS WITH GETTING IN AND OUT OF THE VEHICLE. I SENT A LETTER TO TOYOTA CORPORATE OFFICE ON AUGUST 22, 2010 VIA EMAIL, NO RESPONSE. 1:40 PM, JAN 20, 2007, I WAS DRIVING MY SEQUOIA N/B ON SIERRA HWY IN THE CITY OF SANTA CLARITA. I WAS TRAVELING APPROX 40-45 MPH. I NOTICED A SLIGHT STIFFNESS IN THE STEERING. A SHORT TIME LATER THE LEFT FRONT OF MY VEHICLE VIOLENTLY FELL TO THE GROUND. THERE WERE VEHICLES BEHIND ME AND WITH DIFFICULTY I STEERED TO THE CURB. WHEN THE VEHICLE FELL TO THE GROUND, I HEARD A LOUD 'BANG', AND I FELT THAT I LOST SOME OF MY BRAKES. ONE OF THE DRIVERS BEHIND ME TOLD ME SHE SAW SPARKS COMING FROM UNDER MY VEHICLE. I LOOKED AT THE FRONT OF MY VEHICLE. I SAW THE LEFT FRONT TIRE, WHEEL & HUB (ALL STILL ATTACHED) FOLDED UNDER THE LEFT RUNNING BOARD PREVENTING THE FRONT FENDER AND BUMPER FROM FALLING DIRECTLY TO THE ROADWAY. I SAW THAT THE BRAKE LINES APPEARED TO BE BROKEN. I HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO TOYOTA ON MON, JAN 22, 2007. I WAS TOLD THAT IT APPEARED THE LEFT UPPER BALL JOINT HAD BROKEN CAUSING THE WHEEL TO BREAK AWAY FROM THE VEHICLE. THE DEALERSHIP CONTACTED THEIR SERVICE DIRECTOR TO DETERMINE WHAT REPAIRS SHOULD BE MADE. I WAS SUBSEQUENTLY TOLD THAT MY VEHICLE WAS OUT OF WARRANTY AND THAT TOYOTA HAD 'NO LIABILITY' TO REPAIR MY VEHICLE AT THEIR EXPENSE. REPAIR ESTIMATE IS APPROX $5,000. + THE RENTAL VEHICLE THEY ARRANGED. I WAS TOLD A REGIONAL SERVICE INSPECTOR WOULD LOOK AT MY VEHICLE. I TOLD THEM THAT I WANTED THE OLD PARTS IF REPAIRS WERE TO BE MADE. I AM NOW AFRAID TO DRIVE MY VEHICLE. I WENT TO THE TOYOTA WEB SITE AND NOTICED NUMEROUS RECALL NOTICES FROM TOYOTA FOR FRONT BALL JOINT FAILURES ON MY TYPE OF VEHICLE. I RECEIVED NO RECALL NOTICES FROM TOYOTA. TOYOTA STATED MY VIN WAS NOT ON THE LIST FOR ANY RECALL NOTICES. THE TOYOTA SERVICE DEPT STATED THAT THIS WOULD NOT BE CONSIDERED 'NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR' THAT WOULD REQUIRE ME TO HAVE THIS ITEM CHECKED DURING ALL OF MY REGULAR MAINTENANCE SERVICES. THIS FAILURE COULD HAVE BEEN MUCH WORSE, CAUSING SERIOUS INJURY TO MYSELF AND OTHERS ON THE ROAD. AS OF THIS DATE I HAVE NOT BEEN NOTIFIED THAT THE REGIONAL INSPECTOR HAS INSPECTED MY VEHICLE. *JB

SERVICE BULLETIN NUMBER 20040604 WAS REFERENCED. THE DEALER DISCOVERED THAT THE STEERING RACK AND STEERING COMPUTER FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AT THE COST OF $2,200. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 50,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 40,000.

THE STEERING WENT OUT WITHOUT ANY WARNING. 45 MINUTES PRIOR TO THIS, I WAS ON THE INTERSTATE GOING 70 MILES AN HOUR, THANKFULLY I WAS BACKING OUT OF A PARKING SPACE AT THE TIME, SO NO PERSONAL INJURY OR DAMAGE OF ANY KIND. I COULD HAVE VERY EASILY HAVE BEEN KILLED DO TO DEFECTIVE WORKMANSHIP. I PROMPTLY CALLED GREENVILLE TOYOTA AND REPORTED IT AND THEY WERE TO COME TOW THE CAR FROM RALEIGH BACK TO GREENVILLE. GREENVILLE TOYOTA SAYS THE STEERING COLUMN IS NOT UNDER WARRANTY AND IT WOULD COST ME $328 TO REPLACE IT. IT NEVER SHOULD HAVE COME LOOSE. HERE IS PART OF THE LETTER I'VE SENT TO GREENVILLE TOYOTA: ------------------------------------------------------------ I CRANKED MY 2002 TOYOTA SIENNA AND PUT IT IN REVERSE AND STARTED TO TURN THE WHEEL TO BACK UP. ALL OF A SUDDEN THE STEERING WHEEL POPPED AND THE WHEEL STARTED TO SPIN FREELY. MY BROTHER TOOK A LOOK AT THE SIENNA. HE CHECKED THE FRONT WHEELS AND IT WAS NOT THE TIE RODS. HE THEN CHECKED THE STEERING COLUMN. THE WHEEL SPUN FREELY BECAUSE THE UNIVERSAL JOINT HAD COME LOOSE. THE BOLT THAT GOES FROM THE U JOINT INTO THE STEERING COLUMN NEVER WAS INSTALLED PROPERLY. THE UNIT SHOULD HAVE NEVER, EVER COME APART LIKE THAT. MY BROTHER ATTACHED THE BOLT PROPERLY AND HAD ME ON MY WAY IN A COUPLE OF HOURS. IN HIS MECHANIC'S OPINION THE UNIT WAS NEVER ATTACHED PROPERLY AND WAS AN ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN. *NM

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 TOYOTA SIENNA. WHILE DRIVING 40 MPH THE CONTACT RELEASED THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL AND THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE. THE CONTACT TRIED APPLYING THE BRAKES BUT THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT SLOW DOWN COMPLETELY. THE CONTACT SHIFTED THE VEHICLE INTO NEUTRAL AND IT STILL DID NOT SLOW DOWN. THE CONTACT THEN SHIFTED THE VEHICLE INTO PARK WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO PULL THE VEHICLE OVER AND SHUT IT OFF. THE CONTACT RESTARTED THE VEHICLE AND THE RPM'S BEGAN TO INCREASE RAPIDLY. THE CONTACT PUMPED THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL AND THE RPM'S DECREASED. THE VEHICLE WAS DIAGNOSED BY THREE LOCAL MECHANICS AND NEITHER ONE OF THEM COULD DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. THE DEALER WAS ALSO UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURE AND THAT "GUNK" COULD HAVE COMPOSED IN THE ENGINE, CLOGGED IT WHICH WOULD HAVE CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO ACCELERATE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FAILURE IS DIRECTLY RELATED TO THE CURRENT RECALL FOR THE PEDAL. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 83,271.

EVER SINCE NOVMBER, 2008, MY 2002 TOYOTA SIENNA PASSENGER SIDE POWER DOOR, HAS INTERMITTENTLY FAILED TO OPEN EITHER BY ACTIVATING THE BUTTON ON THE INSIDE OF THE DOOR COLUMN, BY PULLING THE DOOR HANDLE OUTSIDE, OR THE INSTRUMENT PANEL DOOR BUTTON, OR WORSE, AFTER OPENING, WILL NOT CLOSE. THE DEALER HAD TO REINITIALIZE THE ECU IN NOVEMBER, 2008, AND HAVE HAD INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS SINCE. NOW, SINCE AT LEAST DECEMBER, 2012, THE SLIDING DOOR WILL NOT OPEN AT ALL BY ANY OF THE 3 METHODS AND CANNOT BE REINITIALIZED. ALSO, AT TIMES THE MANUAL DRIVERS SIDE PASSENGER DOOR, IN THE PAST ~ 1 1/2 YEARS WILL NOT OPEN EITHER FROM INSIDE DOOR BUTTON RELEASE OR OUTSIDE DOOR HANDLE AND PASSENGERS HAVE TO CLIMB OVER FROM THE FRONT SEATS TO ENTER OR CLIMB OVER THE FRONT SEAT & CONSOLE TO EXIT THE VEHICLE. I HAVE BEEN ADVISED BY MY LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER THAT I NEED TO "START WITH THE REPLACEMENT OF THE ECU," A PART COSTING $730.00 AND ABOUT $1000 WITH INSTILLATION. THE ONLY WAY TO ENTER OR EXIT THE VEHICLE IS BY PUSHING THE BUTTON ON THE DOOR JAM OR OVERHEAD CONSOLE. THEN THE DOOR STOPPED OPENING COMPLETELY. THE MOTOR TRIES TO OPEN THE DOOR BUT SEEMS LIKE THE DOOR DOES NOT RELEASE. IT WILL NOT OPEN. APRIL 2012, DRIVERS SIDE (SLIDING DOOR) ELECTRONIC OUTER DOOR HANDLE HAS STOPPED WORKING. THE ONLY WAY TO ENTER OR EXIT THE VEHICLE IS BY PUSHING THE BUTTON ON THE DOOR JAM OR OVERHEAD CONSOLE. THE DOOR OPENS 80% OF THE TIME. WHEN IT DOES NOT WORK THE MOTOR TRIES TO OPEN THE DOOR BUT SEEMS LIKE THE DOOR DOES NOT RELEASE. WHEN THE DRIVERS SIDE PASSENGER DOOR DOES NOT OPEN THE FAMILY HAS TO ENTER OR EXIT THROUGH ONE OF THE FRONT DOORS AND CLIMB THROUGH TO THE BACK SEATS. THERE IS NO INTERNAL MANUAL OVERRIDE OF THESE DOORS. THIS IS NOT SAFE. IN AN EMERGENCY MY FAMILY WILL HAVE TO GO THROUGH THE FRONT DOORS OR BREAK AND GO THROUGH THE WINDOWS. THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD. OUR 2002 TOYOTA SIENNA HAD THE GEAR SHIFT REPAIRED AT A MAJOR ATLANTA AREA TOYOTA DEALER ON MAY 5, 2014. THE GEAR SHIFT REPLACEMENT REQUIRED THE ENTIRE STEERING COLUMN TO BE DISASSEMBLED. ABOUT ONE WEEK AFTER THAT REPAIR, THE STEERING COMPLETELY FAILED. THE STEERING WHEEL TURNED WITH ABSOLUTELY NO CONTROL OF THE WHEELS. BY SHEER LUCK THIS STEERING FAILURE OCCURRED IN A PARKING LOT AFTER JUST TRAVELING ON THE INTERSTATE. HAD THIS STEERING FAILURE OCCURRED AT INTERSTATE SPEEDS, THIS MAY HAVE BEEN FATAL. THE VEHICLE WAS RETURNED TO THE SAME MAJOR ATLANTA AREA TOYOTA DEALER AND THE CAUSE OF THE STEERING FAILURE WAS IDENTIFIED AS "STEERING JOINT BOLT BACKED OFF FROM CONNECTION". I WAS TOLD THAT THE STEERING FAILURE WAS CAUSED BY ONE BOLT COMING LOOSE. THE STEERING FAILURE WAS CORRECTED BY "RE-TIGHTENED' BOLT WITH LOCK TIGHT". IN SUMMARY, THE REPAIR OF A GEAR SHIFT BY A CERTIFIED TOYOTA DEALER SERVICE CENTER RESULTED IN COMPLETE STEERING FAILURE DUE TO ONE BOLT THAT "BACKED OFF FROM CONNECTION" OR THAT WAS NOT PROPERLY TIGHTENED OR SECURED. IT IS VERY CONCERNING THAT TOYOTA?S STEERING COLUMN DESIGN HAS THE POTENTIAL TO CAUSE COMPLETE STEERING FAILURE WHEN ONE BOLT COMES LOOSE. IT IS ALSO A MAJOR ISSUE THAT A CERTIFIED TOYOTA DEALER SERVICE CENTER IS UNABLE TO SAFELY DISSEMBLE AND REASSEMBLE THE STEERING COLUMN AND PROVIDE A SAFE AND DRIVABLE VEHICLE. I WOULD LIKE TO FIND OUT HOW OFTEN THIS TYPE OF STEERING FAILURE HAS OCCURRED ON THIS AND SIMILARLY DESIGNED TOYOTA VEHICLES. I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO KNOW HOW MANY CRASHES, SERIOUS INJURIES OR DEATHS HAVE RESULTED FROM THIS ISSUE. THIS CERTAINLY CAN?T BE THE ONLY OCCURRENCE. MY WIFE WAS BACKING OUT OF A PARKING SPACE ON A SLIGHT INCLINE. WHEN SHE STOPPED AND TRIED TO PUT THE CAR INTO DRIVE, THE GEARSHIFT BROKE. WE HAD THE VAN TOWED TO THE TOYOTA DEALER AND THEY DETERMINED THAT THE METAL PARTS INTO WHICH THE GEAR SHAFT INSERTS HAD BROKEN CLEAN IN HALF. NEITHER THE CUSTOMER SERVICE REP NOR THE MECHANIC HAD EVER SEEN THAT HAPPEN BEFORE THEY CLAIMED. NEVERTHELESS, TOYOTA DID NOT DEEM THIS TO BE A DEFECT AND WE HAD TO PAY CLOSE TO $800 TO HAVE IT FIXED. HAD THIS HAPPENED ON A STEEPER HILL OR HAD MY WIFE BEEN PULLING OUT INTO A BUSY STREET, AN ACCIDENT MOST DEFINITELY COULD HAVE OCCURRED. I HAVE KEPT THE PARTS WHICH I BELIEVE WERE FAULTY/DEFECTIVE. INTERMITTENTLY, THE PASSENGER SIDE REAR DOOR, THE AUTOMATIC SLIDER, DOES NOT OPERATE PROPERLY. WHILE CLOSING, THE DOOR POPS OPEN UNLESS HELD AND DRAGGED INTO LATCHING POSITION. DEPRESSING THE BUTTON NEAR THE DOOR, ON THE KEY CHAIN, OR ON THE DASHBOARD MAKES NO DIFFERENCE. RESETTING THE SWITCH BY UNHOOKING THE BATTERY DOES NOT IMPACT IT. THE PROBLEM COMES AND GOES WITHOUT ADJUSTING; CURRENTLY SERVICE ENGINEERS FIND NO EASY RESOLUTION UPON EVALUATION. RATHER, THEY REPORT A NEED TO GO THROUGH THE ENTIRE ELECTRICAL HARNESS AT GREAT EXPENSE.

THE DEALER SAID THAT HE RECEIVED OTHER COMPLAINTS FROM OTHER VAN OWNERS ABOUT PEOPLE GETTING SHOCKED AS THEY WERE GETTING OUT OF THE VAN. I BOUGH A 2002 TOYOTA SIENNA NEW IN 2001. THE WARRANTY RAN OUT TWO MONTHS AGO AND NOW I HAVE A PROBLEM. THE PROBLEM IS THE CAR DOES NOT ACCEPT GAS AT THE GAS STATION. I BROUGHT IT TO THE DEALER (PENN TOYOTA - 516-621-6800 ) FOR ITS ANNUAL INSPECTION. I CALLED TO MAKE THE APPOINTMENT AND MENTIONED THE PROBLEM, ALREADY, BEFORE SEEING THE VEHICLE THEY SAID IT WAS THE CHARCOAL CANISTER THAT IS CLOGGED. THEY REPLACED IT AT A COST OF ALMOST 500 DOLLARS. I PAID, LEFT AND WENT STRAIGHT TO A GAS STATION. THE CAR STILL DOES NOT ACCEPT GAS. I RETURNED THE CAR. NOW IT NEEDS TWO MORE PARTS THAT REQUIRE FOUR HOURS OF LABOR AT 85 DOLLARS AN HOUR AND 200 DOLLARS WORTH OF PARTS. I WAS PULLING FORWARD FROM A RED LIGHT, SLOWLY ACCELERATING. SOMEONE CUT ME OFF, I SWERVED, AND THEN ACCELERATED INTO TRAFFIC. THE CAR STARTED ACCELERATING ON ITS OWN, FROM ABOUT 35 MPH (WHERE I PULLED MY FOOT OFF THE ACCELERATOR PAD TO "HOLD" THE SPEED BUT NOT CONTINUE ACCELERATING) UP TO 55 MPH--THIS HAPPENED VERY QUICKLY, IN A SMATTERING OF SECONDS. I REMEMBERED READING THAT YOU SHOULD JUST SLAM ON THE BRAKE AND HOLD IT DOWN HARD, WHICH I DID. THIS DID STOP FURTHER ACCELERATION, BUT IT DID NOT IMMEDIATELY SLOW THE CAR. I WAS ABLE TO SLOW THE CAR IN ABOUT 10 SECONDS, THOUGH DECELERATION WAS VERY SLOW. WHEN I FINALLY RETURNED TO 35 MPH, I DID NOT ATTEMPT TO ACCELERATE AGAIN FOR ABOUT TWO MILES. I PURCHASED A 2002 TOYOTA SEQUOIA IN NOVEMBER 2002. WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED THE SALES PERSON TOLD ME THAT THE HEATING/AIR CONDITIONER SYSTEM APPEARED TO BE A POORLY DESIGNED, BUT I DID NOT THINK THAT A BIG OBSTACLE TO MY PURCHASE. I HAD CONTINUAL PROBLEMS TRYING TO REGULATE THE TEMPERATURE IN THE VEHICLE. IT WAS EITHER 65 DEGREES AND THE NEXT LEVEL DOWN WAS COLD. I WAS ALWAYS FLIPPING THE KNOB BACK AND FORTH TRYING TO REGULATE THE TEMPERATURE. THIS WAS NOT A BIG SAFETY ISSUE UNLESS TAKING MY EYES OFF THE ROAD FOR THESE ADJUSTMENTS CAN BE CONSIDERED HAZARDOUS. I AM DEALING WITH UNDERSIZED BRAKE CALIPER AND ASSOCIATED ROTOR AND BRAKE PAD QUALITY PROBLEMS. THE CARS SHAKES VIOLENTLY QWHEN APPLYING THE BRAKES. THEY ARE CAUSING THE ROTORS TO OVERHEAT CAUSING THE ROTORS TO WARP AND EXCESS WEAR. WHILE TOYOTA RECOGNIZED THAT THE CALIPERS ARE TOO SMALL FOR THE 2002 SEQUOIA, THEY WOULD ONLY REPLACE THEM UNDER WARRANTY. NOT SURE WHY THEY ARE ONLY TOO SMALL UNDER WARRANTY. DO THEY GROW AFTER THE WARRANTY EXPIRES? THIS IS BAD POLICY. THE DEALER RECOMMENDED I SPEND THE $2000 TO FIX THE PROBLEM, WHICH TOYOTA SAYS IS NOT A PROBLEM AFTER THE WARRANTY EXPIRES. THE SPARE TIRE IS MOUNTED UNDER THE VEHICLE WITH THE SHREDDER VALVE ORIENTED DOWNWARD FOR EASY ACCESS. THE WHEEL IS STEEL AND IS LOCATED SO THE TIRES KICK UP WATER AND ROAD SAND AND, WITH THIS ORIENTATION, WATER IS TRAPPED, LIKE IN A BOWL, AND SITS ON THE STEEL. THE PAINT HAS LONG BEEN BLASTED AWAY FROM THE SAND EXPOSURE AND NOW THE WHEEL IS RUSTED SO BADLY IT IS EXTREMELY THIN AND CANNOT BE USED WITHOUT RISKING FAILURE OF THE WHEEL, ESPECIALLY ON THE FRONT WHERE LOADS CAN REACH IN EXCESS OF 2500 POUNDS IN A DYNAMIC FATIGUE SITUATION. IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE THIS SIENNA HAS BEEN RECALLED ONCE ALREADY FOR RUST IN THIS AREA, THANKS TO YOU GUYS, AS RUST WAS DAMAGING THE RETAINING SYSTEM AND THE TIRE WAS FALLING OFF IN TRAFFIC. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS 2002 TOYOTA SIENNA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT BOTH THE FRONT DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE WINDOWS WOULD OPEN AND CLOSE WITHOUT THE KEY IN THE IGNITION. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THEY WERE UNAWARE OF WHAT CAUSED THE FAILURE. THE DEALER THEN ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THE ENGINE THROTTLE WAS CAUSING THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL TO STICK AND WOULD NEED TO BE REPAIRED. ON AUGUST 15, 2010 WITH THE 2002 TOYOTA SIENNA IN PARK AND WITH NO KEY IN THE STEERING WHEEL A TWO YEAR OLD WAS ABLE TO REMOVE THE GEAR SHIFT FROM PARK ALLOWING THE VEHICLE TO BEGIN TO MOVE BACKWARDS. I HAVE A 2002 TOYOTA SEQUOIA WITH 62,000 MI. I HAVE BEEN TO TWO TOYOTA DEALERS TO FIGURE OUT MY PROBLEM. THE VSC TRAC, VSC OFF, ABS AND BRAKE LIGHTS ARE COMING ON. FINALLY AFTER @$700 OF MY MONEY, THEY FIGURED OUT THE PROBLEM TO BE THE ECU. THIS WILL NOW COST ME @1800 FOR PARTS, AND WHO KNOWS YET FOR LABOR. I HAVE READ ONLINE THAT MANY OTHER TOYOTA OWNERS HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. THIS IS AN EXPENSIVE SITUATION, UNLESS YOU HAVE THE EXT. WARRANTY. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 TOYOTA SIENNA. AT 34,006 MILES, THE BRAKES BEGAN TO MAKE SQUEAKING NOISES AND THE BRAKE WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE FAILURE OCCURRED WHILE DRIVING 45 MPH. AT 36,000, 46,000, AND 49,000 MILES, THE DEALER REPLACED THE FRONT AND REAR BRAKES, THE REAR AND FRONT ROTORS, AND ALSO RESURFACED THE FRONT AND REAR DRUMS. THE REPAIRS WERE PERFORMED UNDER WARRANTY. NEVERTHELESS, THE BRAKES CONTINUED TO SQUEAK AND THE BRAKE PEDAL MUST BE DEPRESSED VERY HARD IN ORDER FOR THE VEHICLE TO STOP. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE NOISE WAS DUE TO THE BRAKE BUSTER AND IT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AT THE COST OF $1,000 SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS OUT OF WARRANTY.
