The contact owns a 2002 Toyota Tundra. The contact stated that the frame and the front bumper were severely rusted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 117,000.

The contact owns a 2002 Toyota Tundra. The contact stated that after taking the vehicle to be checked for corrosion to the subframe, the contact was advised that there was significant corrosion on the subframe and the supports underneath the truck bed. The contact was informed that the vehicle was unsafe to drive with any type of load in the truck bed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 180,000.

I was doing maintenance on front and lifted splash guard for access to bolt. On top of the frame, near the firewall, was severe rust. It looks as if the frame could crack at any time. If this happened in highway speed or in traffic, severe risk of injuries. These are known to have issues in salt states (had recalls) and I thought I checked it pretty good before buying. I think this may be from the air conditioning drain system.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSED THAT THE REAR FRAMING MEMBER HAD ROTTED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 101,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 101,300.

ANY SPEED ABOVE 40MPH PRODUCES A VIOLENT SHAKE/WOBBLE FROM THE FRONT END. GOING DOWN A SLOPE AND /OR APPLYING THE BRAKES MAKES THE PROBLEM WORSE. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME IN 2 YEARS THAT I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THE ROTORS, CALIPERS AND PADS AT A CONSIDERABLE COST TO MYSELF. BOTH TIMES THE SYMPTOMS WERE THE SAME AND THE CAUSE WAS THE SAME. Was told about the recall awhile ago and they said that my frame was ok. But now I have a perfectly good truck in good condition other than a rusted frame. Had some work done and mechanic said it is unsafe to drive due to rusted frame. They know of the defect and only replace a few and it looks like others are dealing with what I am.

The contact owns a 2002 Toyota Tundra. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle began to vibrate, prompting the contact to maintain low speeds. After a visual inspection, the contact observed that the front passenger wheels had a negative toe. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who determined that the lower ball joint had separated from the knuckle. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related it to NHTSA Campaign Number: 05V225000 (Suspension), but the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was 249,000.

MY TUNDRA WAS RECENTLY DIAGNOSED WITH CRITICAL FRAME DAMAGE THAT WILL NOT PASS PA. STATE INSPECTION. THE VEHICLE WAS SERVICED BY TOYOTA FOR MOST OF IT,S LIFE AND ALL FRAME RECALLS WERE COMPLETED. THE TRUCK HAS 136,078 MILES AND IS IN VERY GOOD CONDITION. MY RECENT CLAIM WITH TOYOTA WAS REJECTED BASED ON THE THEIR INTERRUPTATION THAT ALL REQUIRED RECALLS WERE DONE AND THERE IS NOTHING TOYOTA CAN DUE FOR ME. THERE ARE NUMEROUS PROBLEMS WITH TOYOTAS RESPONSE. THE FIRST BEGINNING THAT WHEN I PICKED THE TRUCK UP AFTER THE FRAME RECALL TREATMENT I ASKED THE TECH HOW THE FRAME LOOKED, HE SAID GOOD BUT THERE IS A SEPARATION STARTING AT THE DRIVER SIDE REAR LEAF SPRING. VEHICLE WAS RECALLED FOR FRAME RUST. IT WAS RECORDED IN 2012 THAT THE FRAME WAS COATED WITH CRC TO PREVENT /STOP THE RUST. I HAD THE FRAME RUST UNDER COATING 'BAND AID' APPLIED TO MY 2002 TOYOTA TUNDRA BY A TOYOTA DEALER IN LYNCHBURG VA IN 2011. THE FRAME RUST HAS REAPPEARED SO I TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALER ASKING FOR A NEW BAND AID TO FIX THIS PROBLEM AND WAS TOLD THERE WAS NO WARRANTY ON THE FIRST FIX AND TOYOTA WILL DO NOTHING. I FEEL LIKE IT IS TOYOTA'S RESPONCEABILITY TO REPAIR OR FIX THE UNDERBODY RUST PROBLEM BECAUSE THEY KNEW ABOUT THIS AND ARE TRYING NOT TO FULFILL THEIR OBLIGATION UNDER THE RUST RECALL AGREEMEENT WITH THE COURT.

THE REAR AXEL AND DIFFERENTIAL HOUSING/CASTING IS CORRODED THRU SUCH THAT OIL IS LEAKING THROUGH THE DIFFERENTIAL HUB ONTO THE ROADWAY AND RESULTING IN A LOSS OF GEAR OIL WITHIN THE DIFFERENTIAL AND AXELS. AFTER DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY THIS OIL WAS OBSERVED ON THE SPARE TIRE (MOUNTED UNDER THE BED) AND UP THE BACK OF THE BUMPER. THE SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE AT ONE DEALERSHIP I APPROACHED TO DISCUSS THE COST OF REPAIR INDICATED THAT THEY HAVE SEEN THE PROBLEM MULTIPLE TIMES. THIS OBVIOUSLY SHOULD NOT BE HAPPENING AND I BELIEVE IT TO BE THE RESULT OF A DEFECTIVELY DESIGNED/MANUFACTURED COMPONENT. I HAVE NOT YET HAD THE VEHICLE REPAIRED DUE TO THE HIGH COST, BUT IT IS NOT DRIVEABLE AS THE DIFFERENTIAL WILL NOT HOLD GEAR OIL.

I've owned this vehicle for 18 yrs. During that time Air Bags have been replaced on models above and below my year model. Every two or three years, I inquired at Dealerships when this series will be replaced. Always with the same answer, not required because not enough accident reports to warrant replacement. During that time I've only had one small finder bender not affecting the Air Bags to deploy. Curious why this year and model was never required to replace Air Bags?

My frame is to the point that it can not be repaired. It was coated by Toyota years ago as a safety recall but it is to the point now that my mechanic says it is to bad to repair. I have called Toyota and they say there have been frame issues that have been recalled but not with this year and model. only 135,000 miles on the truck

During inspection of my Tundra, I was told by the Toyota service technician that the frame integrity is compromised and could lead to a catastrophic incident. This is a common issue, Toyota settled a class action lawsuit in 2019, but it was restricted to just the 2007-8 model years of the Tundra. There was an earlier recall, but the resolution was not a fix, it was just a patch, leaving thousands of first generation Tundras on the road still with the potential to cause serious safety exposure. Toyota had a frame replacement program for a few years, so they are aware that it’s an issue, but have not resolved for many owners. They sued the frame manufacturer, Dana Corp I believe, further proof that they knew it’s a problem.

The contact called on behalf of a friend who owns a 2002 Toyota Tundra. The contact stated in 2012 there was an unknown under coding and a plug was repaired on the vehicle. The driver experienced shaking and vibration from the rack and pinion steering while driving at approximately 35 MPH. The driver found power steering fluid leakage and there was a crack in the front passenger side of the engine frame. The contact was unaware of any failure warning lights. I purchased 4 new Michelin P245/70 R16 from Costco 12/5/2011with 31250 miles. I am a career auto mechanic for 39 years at an independent auto shop (retired, due to disability, 9/2011). I noticed sidewall cracking within about 2 years, but dismissed it because I have never heard/seen an air pressure loss due to sidewall cracking. The cracking worsened over the years, but the air pressure was even for all 4. Fast forward to 2020, I noticed my RF tire very low, looked for punctures, none found while submerged in water. November 2022 the RF tire was totally flat (parked). I found the sidewall had failed. This was a first for me in my experience. I certainly do not trust the remaining tires. I found a recall on the same brand/model but not my size. I have only 13350 miles on these tires. Tread is very good. I don't drive this truck often, but I maintain my vehicles well. Air pressure has been maintained at 40PSI, 4PSI under the max. pressure. In my opinion this is an obvious case of a defect in materials. I have not contacted Michelin yet.

The contact owns a 2002 Toyota Tundra. The contact stated that he previously received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 09V444000 (Structure). The vehicle was taken to the local dealer and repaired under the recall. Recently, the contact was informed by an independent mechanic that cracks had formed on the rear suspension due to severe corrosion. The contact then took the vehicle to another dealer, Kelly Toyota of Hamburg (1 Industrial Dr, Hamburg, PA 19526), and was informed that the recall was a one-time free repair and the dealer offered no additional assistance. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed him that the recall was too old. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 81,324.

The frame on the truck is rusted out with holes through it and the metal is rusted out along the entire frame. The truck vibrates when driving and when inspected by the dealer, Kari Toyota, they advised it is unsafe to drive as the frame could break entirely and cause an accident. Report is attached. Toyota was contacted on several occasions by Kari Toyota and myself in May and June of 2021. I had the vehicle in for repair of the frame rust issue on June 15, 2012 but clearly the work was not done properly as the rust issue continued until the vehicle is now undriveable. The vehicle has only 106,681 miles which is low for a typical Toyota vehicle. Toyota refuses to repair the vehicle even though I had followed up on my end by bringing it in for the recall repair. I requested a letter from Toyota explaining why they won't cover the repairs and they refused to send one.

I PURCHASED THIS TRUCK USED IN 2015 AND WAS UNAWARE OF ANY RECALLS DUE TO FRAME RUST. I HAVE REPLACED TAILPIPE, MUFFLER, MANY BRAKE COMPONENTS DUE TO RUST PROBLEMS. THE FRAME NOW RUSTED MORE AND I AM BEING TOLD THAT IT MAY BE UNSAFE TO DRIVE. A MECHANIC TOLD ME ABOUT THIS FRAME RUST RECALL AND I TOOK IT TO FRED ANDERSON TOYOTA IN RALEIGH,NC. THE FOUND THAT ALL RECALL ITEMS HAD BEEN COMPLETED BY THE DEALER IN BOONE,NC. I FIND THIS HARD TO BELIEVE SINCE THE RUSTING ISSUE IS MUCH MORE SEVERE. BOCH TOYOTA (277 PROVIDENCE HWY, NORWOOD, MA 02062, (781) 769-8100) WAS CONTACTED TO PURCHASE THE SHOCK SUPPORT. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE SHOCK SUPPORT WAS PART OF THE SUBFRAME AND COULD NOT BE PURCHASED SEPARATELY. IN APRIL OF 2012, THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED PER NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 09V444000 (STRUCTURE); HOWEVER, THE REMEDY FAILED TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 133,000.

WITH 158000 IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE FRONT HALF OF THE FRAME HAS ROTTED OUT/ SEVERAL LARGE PERFORATIONS MAKE THE VEHICLE UNSAFE TO DRIVE. AS PART OF A RECALL, MY 2002 TOYOTA TUNDRA REQUIRED FRAME REPAIR FOR DAMAGE DUE TO RUST/CORROSION, THE STRAPS HOLDING THE GAS TANK WERE RUSTED AND ALSO NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. WHEN THE REPLACEMENT OF THE STRAPS WAS MADE, THE GAS TANK WHICH WAS ALSO RUSTED AND NOT REPLACED AS PART OF RECALL WAS DAMAGED AND A GAS LEAK OCCURRED. CONSUMER WRITES REGARDING PROBLEMS WITH ACCELERATION *TGW THE CONSUMER STATED AS HE PREPARED TO PULL AWAY FROM A SIDE STREET ONTO A MAJOR ROADWAY, HE REMOVED HIS FOOT FROM THE BRAKE AND PRESSED THE ACCELERATOR. THE VEHICLE MOVED FORWARD AT WHAT HE CONSIDERED IDLE SPEED, BUT DID NOT RESPOND TO HIM PRESSING THE ACCELERATOR. THE CONSUMER PRESSED THE ACCELERATOR REPEATEDLY, BUT THE VEHICLE DID NOT RESPOND. HE THEN OBSERVED THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT HAD ILLUMINATED. THE CONSUMER TOOK THE VEHICLE TO HIS MECHANIC WHO INFORMED HIM, THE ACCELERATOR ELECTRONIC RELAY SWITCH WAS BAD. I WAS DRIVING IN A LARGE PARKING LOT AT A SPEED NOT MORE THAN A WALK. I TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE BRAKE PEDAL AND TOUCHED THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL AND THE TRUCK SURGED FORWARD HARD ENOUGH THAT THE THREE PEOPLE IN THE TRUCK WERE THROWN BACK AGAINST THEIR SEATS. I almost hit another vehicle while braking at a stop light. My front brakes gave out. Had new brakes and rotors installed 2 yrs ago and after this incident found that my brakes failed because Toyota refused to fix this problem they knew existed 1 gen Toyota tundra. They changed enlarged the front caliber and pads on 2 gen Toyota because they realized the brakes whe re w to small on the big v8 trucks. I drove aprox 25000 miles on brand new brakes. I should not have to pay for upgrading my front brakes due to a manufacturer defect, How can they get out of recalling these vehicles it is very dangerous and hope they accept responsibility for improper equipment installed on vehicles. I read that they did upgrade some vehicles that where still in warranty why not all?? Vehicles regardless of warranty.???

THE 2002 TOYOTA TUNDRA HAS KNOWN ISSUES WITH THE FRONT ROTORS AND PADS AND SERVICE BULLETIN ABOUT THE PROBLEM FOR CORRECTIONS TO BE MADE. I COMPLAINED TO THE DEALER ABOUT THE PROBLEM IN 2003 WITH MAYBE 20,000 MILES IF THAT. THE PROBLEM WAS CORRECTED UNDER WARRANTY, THAT IS, THE ROTORS AND PADS WERE REPLACED, SO I WAS TOLD, BUT WITH THE SAME PROBLEMATIC PARTS THAT WERE ISSUED WITH THE TRUCK. THE CALIPERS, WHICH HAVE BEEN REPORTED AS UNDERSIZED FOR THE VEHICLE, WERE NOT TOUCHED. EVENTUALLY THE SHIMMY BECOMES BAD ENOUGH IT NEGATIVELY AFFECTS THE BRAKE SYSTEM. TUNDRA 2002 V6 VIBRATED BADLY AT 45 MPH. WHEN CHECKING, FOUND 3 BROKEN STUDS IN THE FRONT WHEELS, 2 FROM THE DRIVER SIDE AND 1 FROM THE PASSENGER SIDE. WITH SOME ON-LINE RESEARCH, A TSB FOR THIS PARTICULAR MODEL AND YEAR HAS ISSUED BACK IN 2003. YET, OWNERS OF THIS TUNDRA MODEL HAD NEVER BEEN MADE AWARE OF IT. WHILE MAKING A CALL TO TOYOTA CORPORATION, A CUSTOMER SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE STATED THAT THERE IS AN UPGRADE BRAKE SYSTEM-CALIPERS, BRAKE PADS, AND OTHER PARTS RELATED TO THE FRONT BRAKE-AVAILABLE FOR FREE OF CHARGE FOR TUNDRAS THAT HAVE HAD BRAKE PROBLEMS. WHEN TAKING THIS PROBLEM TO A LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER, NO ONE SEEMED TO TAKE ANY ACTION. 3 MONTHS LATER, THEY STILL DIDN'T FIX MY CAR. BRAKE HISTORY-SEVERAL COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE BRAKES AND ROTORS BEING WORN OUT AND WARPED FAST HAVE BEEN BROUGHT UP THE LOCAL DEALER. I WAS ROTATING THE TIRES AND TIGHTENING THE LUG NUTS WHEN SIX BROKE. MY TORQUE WRENCH WAS SET AT 80 POUNDS, BELOW THE 82 RECOMMENDATION. TWO LUG NUTS ON THE RIGHT REAR ON ONE ON THE RIGHT FRONT WOULD NOT TIGHTEN AND JUST KEPT TURNING. EVENTUALLY EACH OF THE LUG NUTS FELL OFF, BREAKING THE STUD. THE STUDS DID NOT "SNAP" LIKE A CLEAN BREAK. THE LUGS THAT BROKE WERE POSSIBLY NOT HARDENED OR WERE MADE FROM SOME VERY SOFT METAL. THE LEFT SIDE PRODUCED SIMILAR RESULTS ON THE LEFT REAR. THE LEFT FRONT SECURED ALL SIX LUG NUTS PROPERLY WITH THE 80 # TORQUE SETTING. ON THE LEFT REAR, THREE OF THE STUDS, ALL ADJACENT TO ONE ANOTHER BROKE JUST LIKE THE THREE DID ON THE RIGHT SIDE. I HAVE BEEN CHANGING TIRES FOR 35 YEARS AND HAVE ONLY BROKEN ONE STUD PREVIOUSLY. EIGHTY FOOT POUNDS OF TORQUE IS NOT VERY MUCH TO BREAK OFF A STUD. CHEVROLET CURRENTLY SETS LUG NUTS AT 145 FOOT POUNDS OF TORQUE. I FEEL SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH THE LUG STUDS ON THIS VEHICLE, OR AT LEAST THE SIX THAT MERELY BROKE. THIRTY OF THE LUG STUDS HELD AND TIGHTENED ACCORDING TO PROCEDURES. HOWEVER, THE SIX THAT BROKE DID SO BEFORE EVER CAUSING THE TORQUE WRENCH TO REACH A MERE 80 FOOT POUNDS, WHICH WAS ACTUALLY TWO POUNDS UNDER THE RECOMMENDED SETTING. IN LOOKING AT THE STEEL STUD WHERE IT TWISTED APART, THE METAL HAS THE APPEARANCE OF CAST POT METAL, NOT COLD HARD STEEL. SO FAR, I HAVE RECEIVED NO HELP FROM THE TOYOTA DEALER. THEY SAY, "YOU CAUSED THEM TO BREAK, IT IS NOT OUR FAULT. WE CHANGE TIRES ALL DAY WITH OUR AIR IMPACT WRENCHES AND WE ARE NOT BREAKING THEM." A "DIGITORQUE" TORQUE WRENCH IS MUCH MORE ACCURATE THAN AN IMPACT WRENCH. THAT IS WHY I OWN ONE BECAUSE I REALIZE THE IMPORTANCE OF SETTING NUTS AND LUGS AT THE RIGHT SETTING. FOR THESE REASONS, I FEEL THAT SOME LUG NUT STUDS THAT MAY HAVE NOT BEEN HARDENED, ETC., WERE INSTALLED ON MY VEHICLE SINCE THEY BROKE OFF UNDER VERY LITTLE PRESSURE.

I TOLD HIM THAT ALL OF THE SUV'S AT THE DEALERSHIP MADE THE TICKING NOISE. WELL, HE WAS RIGHT. WHEN I TOOK IT IN TO BE INSPECTED I WAS TOLD THAT I HAD A CRACKED MANIFOLD. THE MECHANIC SAID THAT ALL OF THE TOYOTA SUV'S AND TRUCKS HAVE PROBLEMS WITH THEIR MANIFOLDS. IF THIS IS TRUE, WHY HAVE THEY NOT DONE A RECALL TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM? THE PLASTIC LINK MEMBER OF THE REAR SIDE WINDOW LATCHING PIVOT FAILED/BROKE/FRACTURED WHEN THE WINDOW WAS LATCHED CLOSED. THIS OCCURRED ON BOTH THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE WINDOWS WITHIN ABOUT 2 MONTHS OF EACH OTHER AT THE END OF 2005. IT IS APPARENT TO ME THAT THIS IS A DESIGN DEFECT AS IT OCCURRED IN BOTH LATCHES ON A VEHICLE THAT IS ONLY 4 YEARS OLD. THE PIN PRESSED INTO THE MECHANISM, THROUGH THE HOLE IN THE PLASTIC LINK, IS A SPLIT SPRING PIN WITH A ZIG-ZAG 'TOOTH" PATTERN ALONG THE SLIT IN THE PIN. I BELIEVE THE "TEETH" IN THIS PIN CREATE A STRESS POINT ON THE INNER DIAMETER OF THE MOLDED HOLE THROUGH THE PLASTIC LINK CAUSING THE LINK TO FRACTURE WHEN THE LATCH IS CLOSED AS INTENDED. THE DEALER FROM WHOM THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED HAS REFUSED TO REPLACE THE FAILED PARTS. *JB

I PURACHASE MY TOYOTA SEQUOIA IN AUGUST 2003 FOR THE FIRST SEVERAL MONTH THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DRIVE THAT MUCH, BECAUSE OF MY WIFE'S ILLNESS. THREE WEEKS AGO ON SUNDAY ONE OF THE MEMBER FROM THE CHURCH WAS ATTEMPTING TO RETREIVE HIS BAG AND THE HANDLE BROKE. WHEN I WENT TO THE DEALER SHIP TO ASK ABOUT REPAIR THEY INFORMED ME THAT IT WOULD BE $300.00, AND 200.00 TO FIX THE PASSANGER SIDE. MY COMMENT TO THEM WAS CONCERNING THE REAR DOOR, WHICH I HAD NOT USED THAT MUCH AND OVER THE LAST 6 MONTH MAYBE 3 TIME AT THE MOST PER WEEK, CERTAINLY NOT ALOT. WHAT WAS AMAZING TO ME WAS THAT THE DOOR HANDLE MECHANISM IS MADE OF PLASTIC AND SO IS THE PASSENGER DOOR HANDLE. MY CONCERN AS A CONSUMER THAT TOYOTA DID NOT DO DUE DILIGENCE TO USE A PLASTIC DOOR HANDLE AND MECHANISM AND GIVEN THAT THINGS BREAK SHOULD NOT HAVE A PRICE TAG OF 300.00 TO REPLACE. I CONTEND THAT METAL PARTS SHOULD HAVE BEEN USED WITH THE UNDERSTANDING AND CONSIDERATION OF THE USE OF THE HANDLES. CONSUMERS SHOULD NOT BE AT THE MERCY OF CAR MANUFACTURES TO PUT ANYTHING INTO A CAR THAT WOULD UTIMATELY WOULD PROVE NOT IN THE CONSUMERS BEST INTEREST. I PURCHASED A 2002 TOYOTA SEQUOIA IN NOVEMBER 2002. WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED THE SALES PERSON TOLD ME THAT THE HEATING/AIR CONDITIONER SYSTEM APPEARED TO BE A POORLY DESIGNED, BUT I DID NOT THINK THAT A BIG OBSTACLE TO MY PURCHASE. I HAD CONTINUAL PROBLEMS TRYING TO REGULATE THE TEMPERATURE IN THE VEHICLE. IT WAS EITHER 65 DEGREES AND THE NEXT LEVEL DOWN WAS COLD. I WAS ALWAYS FLIPPING THE KNOB BACK AND FORTH TRYING TO REGULATE THE TEMPERATURE. THIS WAS NOT A BIG SAFETY ISSUE UNLESS TAKING MY EYES OFF THE ROAD FOR THESE ADJUSTMENTS CAN BE CONSIDERED HAZARDOUS. I JUST RECENTLY REPLACED THE BRAKES AND HAD THE ROTORS TURNED. THIS DID NOT HELP. IT STILL VIBRATES AND THE BRAKES ARE SPONGY. I AM DEALING WITH UNDERSIZED BRAKE CALIPER AND ASSOCIATED ROTOR AND BRAKE PAD QUALITY PROBLEMS. THE CARS SHAKES VIOLENTLY QWHEN APPLYING THE BRAKES. THEY ARE CAUSING THE ROTORS TO OVERHEAT CAUSING THE ROTORS TO WARP AND EXCESS WEAR. WHILE TOYOTA RECOGNIZED THAT THE CALIPERS ARE TOO SMALL FOR THE 2002 SEQUOIA, THEY WOULD ONLY REPLACE THEM UNDER WARRANTY. NOT SURE WHY THEY ARE ONLY TOO SMALL UNDER WARRANTY. DO THEY GROW AFTER THE WARRANTY EXPIRES? THIS IS BAD POLICY. THE DEALER RECOMMENDED I SPEND THE $2000 TO FIX THE PROBLEM, WHICH TOYOTA SAYS IS NOT A PROBLEM AFTER THE WARRANTY EXPIRES. WHEN I SPOKE TO THE LOCAL DEALER,BOULDER TOYOTA, HE STATED IT IS NOT A SAFETY ISSUE, ONLY A QUALITY QUESTION. I SEEM TO GET TWO DIFFERENT STORIES FROM THE DEALER AND TOYOTA "CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE". The date it started happening was probably late March now into April to present day as the receptacle on the driver side doesn’t click always and comes undone while on the road and can not get the seatbelt to go back in and has not been assessed or replaced by my local Toyota Dealer and the issue is getting worse these are Stock parts

There are several issues with these seatbelts. They either lock before we can get them buckled or once we unbuckle them, they do not retract and hang out the door, thus draining the battery. They get twisted and stuck in the plastic guide toward the top of the door. The last time this happened, I could not get the seatbelt unstuck despite working on it for almost an hour. I ended up cutting the seatbelt to get it unstuck. Now it is EXTREMELY difficult to use. I need to get it replaced ASAP at my own expense. Very unsafe not to mention frustrating. Also, worth noting is this has been an ongoing problem for years.

The headlights and high beams are dim . When the high beams are on other cars oncoming are not affected as they never flash their lights because my high beams seem as though they are just headlights. Also the fact that the high beams shine like headlights, there is no option for brighter lighting which makes it hard to see far ahead. I live in a rural location off of a narrow highway with down slopes with water at the bottom on both sides of the highway where large wildlife such as deer are plentiful . Insufficient high beam lighting imposes unsafe travel conditions since the headlights are dim and the high beams are how the headlights should be leaving no option for brighter visibility. I noticed the lighting being dim years ago but I thought it was just something to do with my trucks lighting until I began searching online again for a remedy and found many other owners of the same year make and model with exactly the same issue. Therefore in conclusion perhaps is a manufacturer defect. My truck is the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned, it still runs great, I keep it well maintained and I intend to keep using it for as long as we both shall live. I am [XXX] and obviously my truck is over 20 years old and runs great, it would be terribly upsetting if an accident were to occur due to insufficient exterior lighting. I cannot remember exactly what it was I had previously contacted NHTSA regarding my truck , though the exterior lighting is of greater concern now. I noticed the dimness of the exterior lighting since I have been living in this location a lot because there are no street lights along the freeway nor highway as opposed to where I lived prior. THIS BEGAN DEVELOPING A FEW YEARS AGO, APPROXIMATELY 2005. I ATTEMPTED TO USE A LENS POLISHING PRODUCT, BUT THAT PRODUCED ONLY MARGINAL IMPROVEMENTS. MOST OF THE TIME THE BULB WOULD FALL OUT AND END UP LAYING IN THE LENSE CASING AND COULD BE PLUGGED BACK IN AND STILL WORK. THIS IS A REOCCURING PROBLEM IN THE TOYOTA TUNDRA. THEY HAD A RECALL FOR THE 2002 MODEL TUNDRA FOR THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM. THAT RECALL # WAS SSC-Y01. I WENT TO THE DEALER AND THE PLUG WAS TOTALLY CUT OFF AND REPLACED. THE REPAIR WAS COVERED UNDER EXTENDED WARRENTY BUT WITH A $50 DEDUCTABLE THAT I HAD TO PAY. MY SERVICE MAN DID NOT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THE 2000 RECALL, BUT ANOTHER SERVICE MAN INDICATED TO ME THAT IS WAS A PROBLEM IN PREVIOUS YEARS AND GAVE THE 2000 RECALL INFORMATION ABOVE. I CALLED TOYOTA AND THEY WOULD NOT DO ANYTHING. THE EXACT WORDING FOR 2000 SSC-Y01 TUNDRA STOP LAMP RECALL SAID THE FOLLOWING " THE PLASTIC BULB SOCKET IN CERTAIN REAR COMBINATION LAMP (INCLUDES STOP LAMP) MAY NOT HAVE BEEN MOLDED PROPERLY IN CERTAIN 2000 MODEL YEAR TUNDR'S. THIS COULD CAUSE A REDUCTION OF BULB RETENSION FORCE IN USE. IN THE WORST CASE, THE BULB COULD FALL OUT OF THE SOCKET RESULTING IN AN INOPERATIVE STOP LAMP." THIS IS EXACTULLY WHAT OCCURRED WITH MY STOP LIGHT BULB. WHAT THEY DO NOT INDICATE IS THE WOREST THING COULD HAPPEN WOULD SOMEONE COULD REAR END YOU SINCE THE LIGHTS ARE NOT WORKING WHICH COULD BE FATAL. YOU MAKE THE CALL.

I HAVE A 2002 TOYOTA TUNDRA THAT IS LEAKING GAS. INITIALLY I NOTICED A FUEL SMELL WHEN I WALKED BY THE TRUCK WHICH PROGRESSED TO SEEING FUEL ON THE GROUND. IF I PUT TOO MUCH GAS IN THE TRUCK, OVER 1/2 TANK, YOU CAN SEE THE FUEL LEAKING THROUGH THE 4X4 FUEL TANK PROTECTIVE COVER. VEHICLE TREATED BY TOYOTA FOR EARLIER RECALL DUE TO RUST OF THE FRAME AND GIVEN A 5YR EXTENDED WARRANTY. MY 2002 TOYOTA TUNDRA TRUCK IS NOT DRIVABLE AT THIS TIME. THE TRUCK WAS BROUGHT TO TOYOTA DEALERSHIP AFTER A LOCAL MECHANIC FOUND FLUID LEAKING FROM REAR DIFFERENTIAL DUE TO RUST/ROT. THE DEALER DID A FRAME INSPECTION AND WHILE THE WHOLE FRAME IS EXCESSIVELY RUSTED, THE FRAME PASSED THE RECALL TEST BECAUSE IT HAD NOT BEEN PERFORATED YET. THE DEALER DID NOT WANT TO EVEN REMOVE THE DIFFERENTIAL PLUG BECAUSE THE WHOLE UNIT WAS SO RUSTY. I HAVE BEEN UNDER THE TRUCK AND PERSONALLY SEEN THE EXCESSIVE RUST ON THE FRAME, FUEL SYSTEM, AND SUSPENSION COMPONENTS. AMAZINGLY, THE BODY PANELS HAVE LITTLE OR NO RUST AND IN VERY GOOD CONDITION. DURING PREVIOUS DEALER VISITS WE WERE VERBALLY TOLD THAT THE RUST WAS NORMAL. THE REPAIR ESTIMATE FOR GAS TANK/LINES AND NEW DIFFERENTIAL HOUSING, ETC. WAS APPROXIMATELY $7000. My original owner 2002 Toyota Tundra Truck was being backed up in reverse with a utility trailer attached up a very, very moderate incline on a driveway pushing the trailer onto a gravel pad ALONGSIDE (parallel) the driveway. As it started to spin gravel the truck was put into a 4 wheel Drive LOW RANGE. This is in keeping with the TOYOTA owners manual publication 0M34417U Part Number 01999-34417 Print date 02-0109-01. We followed the manual instruction on 4 WD operation. Within a few feet the truck stopped as if the wheels had hit a curb and there was no further movement no matter the accelerator pedal position and the engine speed was unchanged as if it was in a stall. All of a sudden there was a loud bang underneath the truck and the truck raced rearward 8-10 feet jackknifing the trailer into a tree and upending the truck and trailer. We contacted Toyota on the incident and they had a third party look at the truck for brake condition, floor mat placement and throttle freedom at the body shop & Toyota closed the complaint file. Toyota IGNORED the circumstances and description of the incident in closing the complaint. We have been a very long time TOYOTA truck family and have owned SIX Toyota 4 wheel drives plus a Lexus all-wheel drive. In doing our own evaluation and investigation we have found that the truck went into a 4-wheel drive "wind-up" or "bind" and found information related on it from ASE Certification sites. NO MENTION of this potential issue is provided in the owners manual! We found that the torque from this can be over 4,000 ft/lb. and possible magnified even more by low range. When this bind suddenly is released the movement can be violent as happened here. Why is this not talked about in the owner manual? Why does Toyota ignore this reality? Indeed, the Toyota Rep. Mr. Ronald Inton said "he never heard of anyone backing up in 4 Wheel Drive"! WHAT?? We have the vehicle, photos, Toyota denial all available for review,.

Sudden maximum acceleration accompanied by brake failure, without warnings, occurred on my 2002 Toyota Tundra 4.7L V8 causing loss of control of the vehicle, which ended in a rollover crash, resulting in total loss of the vehicle and injury to me. While departing a 25 mph zone (sign read "END 25 SPEED LIMIT") on a relatively straight section of the road, I very gently accelerated from 20 mph to 30 mph. As soon as the vehicle reached 30 mph, sudden maximum acceleration occurred. Taking my foot off of the gas pedal, first I verified that the gas pedal was not stuck or blocked, but the gas pedal was in the fully up position. I then pressed the brake pedal very hard, but it was locked in the fully up position and the brakes would not engage. I then verified that nothing was blocking the brake pedal underneath it. At that point, around 3 to 4 seconds after the sudden acceleration began, I had entered the first turn of a 30 mph "S" turn at a high rate of speed, while acceleration continued at the vehicle's maximum acceleration rate beyond my control with the brakes not engaging. In order to avoid collision with a camper motor home and a small car following it, I went into the oncoming traffic lane at the second turn of the "S" turn. My truck fish tailed and struck a reflector marker on the left side of the road. To avoid going down a 50+ foot, nearly straight down drop on the left side of the road, I turned right. To avoid striking the motor home, I turned left, then right again to try to gain control. My truck rolled on its left side and landed upright on the right side of the road. It had been accelerating at its maximum acceleration rate with the brakes failing to engage and fish tailing the entire time. The problem appeared to be a catastrophic failure of the electronic throttle control and/or related electronic systems.

The Toyota Tundra 2002 truck did NOT deploy driver's side and passenger's side airbags in a collision consisting of frontal and left-sided collision with immobile objects, with frontal/top profound impact from standing tree. The car was up to date on its inspections and maintenance. The breaks, though appropriately checked and tested, would take longer than normal to break the vehicle. The seatbelt, if pulled hard enough, would easily dislodge from buckle, coming undone. The driver of this vehicle collided as described above and due to the failure(s) of the safety mechanisms in place, resulted in the death of the driver. The driver was restrained with seatbelt, however dislodged from buckle upon impact and NO airbags deployed. The issue(s) have been confirmed by the police report, the county police documented. The vehicle has been inspected by police officers, and possibly others, including the employees of the towing company. There was NO indication thats the airbag deployment was either "off" if possible, and or indications of airbag defect. No messages or lights were indicated for the failure of the deployment of the airbags. No messages or lights were indicated for the defect and or failure of the seatbelt not remaining intact with force. The person in reference PASSED AWAY on impact at scene. The failures of the safety mechanisms put into place for this vehicle are absolutely unacceptable and beyond subpar.

First the gas tank let loose and fell half way off. Result was a new gas tank installed. then part of the frame rusted from the cab. This resulted in having to have it welded. Have had several service repair lights come on that resulted in more fixes. Today just about does it. The spare tire fell to the road because rust ate through what was holding it up. I have all the papers that show the repairs and what it has cost me. I have not done anything yet about spare tire. I have had the truck since 2013 and it has less then 94k miles on it. It had 35 when I bought it and I knew nothing about the rust problem recall. I certainly believe I should have a new frame or some kind of compensation. Over the years I have talked to several dealers that got me no where. I guess this is my last shot.

on June 9th at about 2pm while driving through my neighborhood, my upper an lower ball joints on my 2002 Toyota Tundra separated from my vehicle causing a catastrophic loss of control of truck and tore my hub with tire from vehicle ripping the brake fuel line and shoving entire components up under my Tundra while losing control with no brakes or steering capability. It also destroyed the drivers side front tire. Needless to say if I was say...going 55 to 60 miles per hour on highway...I would not be writing this. Had truck towed to Checkered Flag Toyota and they quoted me a price of over1300$ in repairs... they are fighting me on fixing my truck damages even though said damages were caused by the ball joint recall on the 2002 tundra...recall I D#05v

I HAVE A 02 TUNDRA SR5 HAVE A SERIOUS PROBLEM W/STEERING COLUMN SHAFT WHEN I TRY TO PUT ON DRIVE THE GEAR SHIFT LEVER BROKE FREE CAUSING UNEXPECTED GEAR SELECT. I HAVE TO REMOVE THE PLASTIC COVER IN ORDER TO HAND SELECT THE GEAR THE ALUMINUM SHAFT SUB-ASSY CONTROL BROKE OFF AT THE SCREW ATTACH TO THE COLUMN SUPPORT THIS IS APPEAR TO BE A FLAWED DESIGN FOR ATTACH THE SHIFT LEVER. TOOK MY 2002 TUNDRA TO A LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER FOR A SECOND TIME TO INSPECT FRAME AFTER BEING TOLD BY AN INDEPENDENT LICENSED MECHANIC THAT MY FRAME WAS PERFORATED/ROTTED, THE REAR END HOUSING WAS LEAKING, THE SPARE TIRE HANGER WAS BROKEN,(TIRE MISSING), ALL HEAT SHIELDS WERE EITHER BROKEN,LOOSE OR MISSING AND FRONT BRAKES WERE IN NEED OF BEING REPLACED AGAIN. FRONT BRAKE ROTORS, PADS AND CALIPERS WERE REPLACED 11/09/07. ALL OF THIS HAD OCCURRED SINCE 05/06/2010 WHEN THE TRUCK WAS LAST ON HIS LIFT. HARR TOYOTA PERFORMED A FRAME INSPECTION AND VERIFIED ALL OF THE ABOVE FAILURES. THEY ALSO DID THE FRAME CROSSMEMBER INSPECTION IN 01/10 AND THE TRUCK PASSED. THEY SPECIFIED THAT THE FRAME FAILURE WAS @LT RAIL/TRANS MT. THEY ALSO SAID THE RT FT SWAY BAR LINK WAS BROKEN, AND NOTICED AN EXHAUST LEAK. THEY DECLARED THAT IN SPITE OF THE FRAME FAILURE IT WAS SAFE TO DRIVE JUST DON'T DO ANY OFFROADING! SO I GUESS THAT HITTING A POTHOLE WOULD NOT BE ADVISED.! THEY TOLD ME THAT THE BRAKES WERE UNSAFE, AND NOT COVERED UNDER ANY RECALL. I AM VERY UPSET AT THE CONDITION/VALUE OF MY TRUCK. I AM ALSO VERY UPSET THAT NHTSA IS LETTING TOYOTA GET AWAY WITH THE "WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT" OF REPLACING THE FRAME ONLY OF THESE TRUCKS. TOYOTA AND ITS DEALERS DENIED THE RUST PROBLEM FOR YEARS. MY PROBLEM STARTED WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY, AND I WAS BLAMED FOR THE FAILURE. IN THE YEARS THAT TOYOTA HAS DENIED A PROBLEM WITH THE TUNDRA, THE FRAME RUST HAS INFECTED, MOST IF NOT ALL, OF THE TRUCK. BOTH BUMPERS ARE ROTTING OFF. THE GAS TANK HAD TO BE PATCHED (05/2010) BECAUSE IT WAS LEAKING FUEL FROM A RUST SPOT UNDER ONE OF THE SUPPORT STRAPS. TOYOTA WILL REPLACE OTHER COMPROMISED PARTS AT THE OWNERS FULL EXPENSE. I OWN A 2002 TOYOTA TUNDRA AND I HAVE HAD APPROXIMATELY FIVE OCCASIONS WHERE I HEARD A CLUNK WHILE DRIVING THE TOYOTA TUNDRA AS IF THE TRANSMISSION WAS SLIPPING DURING THE MONTH OF JULY 2010. ON AUGUST 13, 2010, I WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 75 MPH WHEN I HAD DRIVEN THE TUNDRA APPROXIMATELY 200 MILES, I PULLED OFF OF THE HIGHWAY TO REFILL WITH GASOLINE AND AS I SLOWED DOWN TO THE PUMP, THE TUNDRA BEGAN TO EXCESSIVELY SHAKE AND STALLED. I THEN STARTED THE VEHICLE UP WHICH STARTED WELL AND I CUT IT OFF TO REFILL WITH GASOLINE. ONCE I BEGAN TO TAKE OFF, THE TUNDRA BEGAN TO SHAKE AGAIN AND STALLED, NOT MORE THAN 1/10TH OF A MILE FROM THE PUMP. WE BOUGHT A USED 2002 TOYOTA TUNDRA ON 6-16-2005 THAT HAD 45,134 MILES ON IT. IT NOW HAS 109,000 MILES ON IT . WHEN WE FIRST BOUGHT THE TRUCK FROM THE DEALERSHIP, THE BRAKES WERE REPLACED BEFORE WE TOOK IT HOME BECAUSE WE NOTICED A VIBRATION. SINCE THEN, WE HAVE REPLACED THE BRAKES, PADS, ETC. TWICE. WE NOW HAVE TO HAVE THE VEHICLE SERVICE AGAIN BECAUSE WHILE DRIVING THE TRUCK SHAKES VIOLENTLY AT AROUND 40 MPH AND BRAKING LITERALLY SHAKES THE ENTIRE TRUCK. ALL SHIELDS AND SAFETY GUARDS HAVE FALLEN OFF OR WILL SOON. I BOUGHT THE TRUCK NEW IN NOV OF '01. IT NOW HAS 84,000 MILES. I HAVE A 2002 TOYOTA SEQUOIA WITH 62,000 MI. I HAVE BEEN TO TWO TOYOTA DEALERS TO FIGURE OUT MY PROBLEM. THE VSC TRAC, VSC OFF, ABS AND BRAKE LIGHTS ARE COMING ON. FINALLY AFTER @$700 OF MY MONEY, THEY FIGURED OUT THE PROBLEM TO BE THE ECU. THIS WILL NOW COST ME @1800 FOR PARTS, AND WHO KNOWS YET FOR LABOR. I HAVE HAD MULTIPLE PROBLEMS WITH MY 2002 TUNDRA TRD 4WD. I HAVE HAD IT IN MORE THAN 4 TIMES FOR THE BRAKES VIBRATING/PULSATING AND LOOKS LIKE I WILL BE TAKING IT IN AGAIN AS THEY ARE STARTING TO VIBRATE AGAIN!! RENO TOYOTA HAS ALWAYS DONE ALL THE MAINTENANCE ON IT AND KEEP TRYING TO SAY IT IS MY FAULT THE BRAKES ARE BAD AND THE ROTORS ARE WARPING. THEY REPLACED THE REAR AXLES A COUPLE OF MONTHS AGO BUT I HAD TO PAY THE $50 DEDUCTIBLE. THEY ALSO HAD TO INSTALL A GASKET ON THE CROSSOVER FOR THE ENGINE COOLANT AS THE FACTORY NEVER INSTALLED IT. THE AC DOESN'T GET COOL ENOUGH TO COOL THE INTERIOR. WHISTLING NOISE BUT DON'T KNOW WHERE IT IS COMING FROM...SOUNDS LIKE COMING FROM SIDE MIRRORS??? I REPLACE THE WHEELS RECENTLY BECAUSE OF VIBRATION BECAUSE THE WHEELS WERE WARPED. ALWAYS HAVE EXCESSIVE BRAKE DUST ON FRONT WHEELS. TRANSMISSION FEELS AND SOUNDS LIKE IT IS SLIPPING ALL THE TIME. ROUGH IDLE AFTER WARM UP. I BOUGHT IT NEW IN JULY 2002 AND NOW HAVE 69400 MILES ON IT. MOST OF WHICH ARE HIGHWAY MILES WITH NO TOWING EVER...NO HEAVY HAULING EVER. DT: THE CONSUMER STATES THAT SHE AND HER HUSBAND WERE TRAVELING ON THE INTERSTATE BETWEEN 70-75 MPH AND VEHICLE WAS NOT OPERATING CORRECTLY. THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME THAT CONSUMER NOTICED THAT THE STEERING WAS NOT CORRECT. THE OWNERS CHANGED SEATING ARRANGEMENTS, AND THE WIFE TOOK OVER DRIVING AFTER ONE HOUR AND A HALF. THE OTHER DRIVER NOTICED THAT THE TRUCK WAS PULLING HER INTO AN 18 WHEELER THAT WAS TRAVELING BESIDES HER. THE INTERSTATE WAS FLAT THAT THEY WERE TRAVELING ON. SHE WAS TRYING TO APPLY BRAKE PRESSURE AND GET AWAY FROM THE 18 WHEELER. THE STEERING WAS UNCONTROLLABLE BEFORE THEY CRASHED. THE NEXT THING THAT THE OWNER REMEMBERED WAS THAT THEY WERE GOING OFF THE ROAD, WITH ONE TIRE IN THE DIRT, AND THEN THE VEHICLE STARTS FLIPPING. THE VEHICLE WAS SITTING UP STRAIGHT ACROSS BOTH LANES THAT THEY WERE TRAVELING. THE POLICE AND AMBULANCE ARRIVED AT THE SCENE. . THE OWNER'S HUSBAND WAS KILLED IN THIS ACCIDENT, AND THERE WERE TWO INJURIES WHO WERE TAKEN BY AMBULANCE TO THE HOSPITAL. A POLICE REPORT WAS ISSUED. THE OWNER HAD JUST NOTICED THE PROBLEM WITH THE VEHICLE THE DAY OF THE ACCIDENT. THE DEALER WAS CONTACTED, AND AWARE OF THE ACCIDENT. DEALERSHIP REIMBURSED THE OWNER ON THE REST OF HER EXTRA EXTENDED WARRANTY. THE OWNER HAS NOT TALKED TO TOYOTA. ALSO, THE OWNER BECAME AWARE OF NHTSA RECALL. 05V225000. *AK *TT

REGARDING 2002 SEQOUIA. SINCE SEQOUIA NOT AN OPTION, CHOSE TUNDRA AS IT WAS CLOSEST TO VEHICLE TYPE. DRIVING ON FREEWAY AT SPEED LIMIT, THEN CAR FELT AS IF VEERING OFF TO THE LEFT, IT WAS HARD KEEPING STEERING WHEEL STRAIGHT AND THEN I NOTICED THAT THE TRAC OFF AND VSC LIGHTS WENT ON. IT WAS A CLEAR DAY, FAIRLY SMOOTH SURFACE IN THE CENTER LANE, WHEN THIS INCIDENT OCCURRED. HAD TO PULL OF FREEWAY AND TURN OFF VEHICLE AND THEN RESTART TO RESET THE CAR. WHILE DRIVING 70 MPH, THE TRANSMISSION STALLED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED. DEALERSHIP REPAIRED THE PROBLEM. *AK THE DRIVER HEARD AND FELT A LOUD BUMP IN THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. THE ENGINE CONTINUED TO RUN BUT THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT MOVE WHEN THE CONSUMER APPLIED THE GAS PEDAL. THERE WAS REAR END GREASE LEAKING FROM THE RIGHT SIDE REAR SHOWING ON THE WHEEL AND TIRE. THE MECHANIC STATED THAT THERE WAS NO CONNECTION BETWEEN THE REAR BRAKE, REAR END LEAKING GREASE, THE DRIVE SHAFT AND THE FAILURE OF THE TRANSMISSION. THE BRAKES WERE A MAJOR PROBLEM, THE CRUISE CONTROL NEVER KEPT SPEED OR SMOOTH, THE LEFT LOWER FRONT BALL JOINT HAD A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE THAT CAUSED THE ENTIRE WHEEL, BRAKE LINE AND ALL ESSENTIAL COMPONENTS ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE VEHICLE TO COME LOOSE.
