Frame rot on the original frame with a recall

The contact owns a 2004 Toyota Tundra. The contact stated that on several occasions, while driving at undisclosed speeds and then parking the vehicle, the contact observed oil leaking from the vehicle. The contact stated that on another occasion, while driving at an undisclosed speed, the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was inspected, and the contact observed corrosion and holes on the frame of the vehicle, and the motor mounts were rusted, causing the engine to run abnormally low. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed, and it was determined that the vehicle was flexing due to the holes throughout the frame of the vehicle. The mechanic was unable to lift the vehicle due to the excessive corrosion. The vehicle was deemed unsafe to drive. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 150,000.

The contact owns a 2004 Toyota Tundra. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked, the contact became aware that the sub frame underneath the vehicle was rusted. The contact was concerned that the sub frame could collapse. The vehicle was taking to the dealer to be inspected. The contact was informed that the sub frame needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a case was opened. The failure mileage was 157,000.

I took my truck to a garage for simple tire repair. I had a slow leak. In the process of trying to lift my truck, the technician hear 'crumbling sounds'. They stopped the lift immediately. Upon looking at the my chassis frame, the technicians saw major rust damage. One technician used flashlight to tap against the frame and he poked through it. The technician stated that this was not the first time seeing this problem on this truck model style. I contacted a local dealership. The individual I spoke with at the dealership also confirm rusting issues on the frame of my truck style model. I researched this on the internet to find out multiple complaints concerning the premature rusting of these frames due to poor quality steel and inadequate rust prevention coating. I reached out to my vehicle manufacture "care line". They stated they could not help me. My fear is my frame could break while driving and cause a vehicle accident. The worst frame damage is near the front wheels, both sides. The body, engine, transmission and all other safety components are solid and working well. Side Note: My dad owns a 1992 full size pickup truck (different manufacture). The frame is still solid. My truck is 10 years newer and the frame is falling apart due to manufacture using poor quality steel.

2004 Toyota Tundra’s Frame is abnormally rusted. The paint and the mechanical function of the vehicle is pristine however the frame has corroded and rusted egregiously. There was a class action suit a few years back but they failed to notify me of the open recall to replace and even on file there was never any pending notice of such recall for my vehicle although it qualified and I have been the only owner of the vehicle.

The contact owns a 2004 Toyota Tundra. The contact stated while driving 25 MPH, the front driver's side lower ball joint detached, causing the driver's side wheel to separate from the vehicle, and the vehicle lowered to the ground. The vehicle was towed to the residence, where it was diagnosed by an independent mechanic. The mechanic determined that the front driver's side lower ball joint needed to be replaced. The mechanic replaced the front driver's side and passenger's side lower ball joints. The contact stated that the vehicle was previously repaired by an unknown dealer for the same failure. The contact stated that the front driver's side and passenger's side ball joints failed several times while driving and were replaced; however, the failure persisted. Additionally, the contact stated while driving approximately 60-65 MPH, the driver's side ball joint failed, which damaged the running board, the brakes, the driver's side door, the tie rod, the coil springs, the lower control arm, and the lower and upper ball joints. The vehicle skidded to the side of the road. The vehicle was towed to the residence. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 05V225000 (Suspension), 07V013000 (Suspension) and 22E002000 (Suspension); however, the VIN was not included. The dealer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 140,000.

Severe rust to the frame of my 2004 Toyota Tundra SR5 double cab. There are holes through the frame. Took it for an oil change and the mechanic told me to be careful. Crawled under the truck and couldn't believe how bad it was.

I HAVE TRIED FOR MONTHS TO GET THIS AIRBAG REPLACED WITH NO LUCK. I KEEP GETTING THESE RECALL NOTICES WITH INSTRUCTIONS I TRY TO FOLLOW AND HERE'S THE RESULTS SO FAR: AFTER TEXTING "FIX" TO 877-427-0285 SEVERAL TIMES, NOTHING HAPPENED. MONTHS LATER, I GET SOME BIZARRE TEXT FROM A NUMBER I DON'T RECOGNIZE ASKING FOR MY ADDRESS SAYING I NEED TO RESPOND WITHIN 10 MINUTES. AFTER ASKING WHO IT WAS, ANOTHER NUMBER TEXTS ME ASKING FOR THE SAME INFO WITH NO EXPLANATION AS TO WHO THEY ARE AND THEY REFUSED TO SAY. I'VE CALLED TOYOTA OF TUMWATER A FEW TIMES AND, AT FIRST, THEY COULDN'T SCHEDULE ME FOR AN APPOINTMENT UNTIL SOME TWO MONTHS OUT. IN THE MOST RECENT CALL THEY NEEDED MY HOME ADDRESS AND PHONE NUMBER, WHICH I'M NOT INCLINED TO GIVE BUT DID IN HOPES OF GETTING THIS RESOLVED, BUT THEN THEY NEEDED MY FULL VIN. WE RECEIVED A RECALL LETTER SOME TIME IN NOVEMBER FOR OUR TOYOTA TUNDRA. I REACHED OUT TO STEVEN TOYOTA IN HARRISONBURG VIRGINIA SHORTLY AFTER RECEIVING THE LETTER. I WAS TOLD THEY NEEDED TO ORDER THE PART AND WOULD CALL BACK WHEN RECEIVED. I NEVER RECEIVED A CALL FROM STEVEN TOYOTA, AND HAVE BEEN ATTEMPTED TO GET THIS RESOLVED WITH MULTIPLE CALLS TO THE DEALERSHIP SINCE EARLY JANUARY. THE CALLS TO THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT EITHER GO TO VOICE MAIL OR ARE HUNG UP ON AFTER MULTIPLE RINGS. I FINALLY GOT A HOLD OF A SERVICE PERSON ON JANUARY 30TH, WHO SAID THEY WOULD CALL BACK IN TEN MINUTES WHEN THEY FOUND OUT INFORMATION. I NEVER RECEIVED A CALL. I ATTEMPTED TO CALL BACK TODAY, AND THE CALL WENT TO VOICE MAIL. I DO HAVE A RECORD OF ATTEMPTED PHONE LOG ON MY PHONE. I CALLED STEVENS BACK AND TOLD THE RECEPTIONIST I WOULD BE FILING A COMPLAINT, AND SHE RESPONDED " I'M SORRY FOR YOUR INCONVENIENCE."

IN RESPONSE TO THE RECENT RECALL, I SCHEDULED AN APPOINTMENT AT ROUND ROCK TOYOTA. I WAS TOLD THEY WOULD NOT COMPLETE THE REPAIR BECAUSE "THE NEW ONES HAVE BEEN RECALLED ALSO" AND TO WAIT UNTIL NEXT YEAR. THEY REFUSED TO REMEDY.

2004 Toyota Tundra. Left rear upper shock mount rotted away and the shock absorber is no longer connected. (rust) Auto Service report 12/30/2024. October 21, 2021 Toyota Dealership report: Recommends replace spare tire cross member. (rust perforation damage) Recall issued for rust and dealership performed a very limited service repair to this vehicle years ago. The recall repair consisted of rust proof paint applied to a very small limited area, not to frame, not to cross member, not to any shock mount) Concerned about rust currently causing the shock mount to fail and the cross member rust damage along with frame rust on the passenger side. 2 different dealerships told me this concern it is not under a recall. This Toyota Tundra truck is well maintained with regular scheduled auto service checks and appointments. It is never used for towing or off road use. I am the original owner, central New Jersey use only. The truck runs and looks good. The high amount of rust under the truck should not have occurred to the level of a shock mount rusting out and a cross member rusting out and frame rust.

Frame is rusting out, only one bolt is holding left frame per tire dealership & Toyota dealer knows of rusting frame. Spare tire underneath fell out while turning on road, thankfully no cars following.

I have a 2004 Toyota Tundra SR5 that was part of the frame rust replacement campaign. It was brought into Bob Rohrman Toyota in Lafayette, IN and determined that it did not meet the criterion for replacement. I now have a sway bar bracket that rusted off of the frame. No mechanics or body shops will touch it and I was told there is nothing to even weld a new bracket to and the engine mounts are just a matter of time before rotting away. The truck only has 118k miles and zero body rust. I have lost value in this vehicle because I cannot sell it and the dealership and Toyota both refuse to remedy the situation.

The frame has a large rust area and has a large hole near the passenger side wheel well. The body of the truck is in great shape. Truck is washed very regularly including special attention to the under carriage.

My truck was bought with no open recalls. I was recently informed my a mechanic while getting my brakes replaced, that the frame of the truck was rusted and cracked. He said the truck could literally break apart while driving. This truck is in great condition has zero rust on the body, has always been garage kept. The previous owner also kept it in the garage. It's 19 years old and only has 107,000 miles on it. The recall from Toyota for this problem was addressed per the records however the exact frame malfunction has occurred. Toyota says there is nothing they can do because the recall work was done. Even if the recall work wasn't done right or didn't fix the problem. My fear is there are other people in my position who have no choice but the drove the vehicle they already deemed unsafe. And the FIX Toyota came up with did not insure that this problem would not

The warranty work done on the frame of my Tundra that has since failed. The Bracket holding my SwayBar has broken off the frame and, more importantly, the frame has rusted to the point where there is now a hole in it. These are areas where the warranty work occurred.

Informed by Al Serra at 4200 Bay Rd in Saginaw, MI 48603 that there are holes present in the frame that pose a dire safety concern. This is a known issue with this model year, but Toyota says the recall is no longer valid.

Brought vehicle in for service and frame is completely rusted through in critical areas where suspension and body mounts are supposed to be mounted. The car is not road worthy and unsafe to drive. I came to understand that there was a recall for these truck frame, however my frame was never replaced. My frame was never treated for rust. This truck has always been maintained and serviced at a Toyota dealership. Now I'm told their is nothing they can do.

ORIGINAL OWNERS OF A 2004 TUNDRA DOUBLE CAB 4WD, PURCHASED NEW. WITHIN 3 YEARS, THE WHEELS BEGAN TO CORRODE. REPORT WHEEL CORROSION TO TOYOTA, THEY REPLY NOTHING THEY CAN DO. IN 2007, WITH 25K MILES, TRUCK WAS RECALLED AND HAD BALL JT REPLACED. AT 60K MILES, PARKING BRAKE MECHANISM WAS FROZEN (CORRODED) AT THE REAR WHEELS. AT APPROXIMATELY 90K MILES, FRONT SUSPENSION LEFT SIDE VERTICAL LINK FRACTURED. REPLACED LINK ON BOTH SIDES, AND RIGHT SIDE HAD DETERIORATED AND FAILURE WAS IMMINENT. WHEEL BACKING PLATES ON ALL 4 WHEELS BEGAN CORRODING. REAR BUMPER AND SUPPORT BRACKETS BEGAN TO CORRODE AT 90K MILES. NOVEMBER OF 2014, VEHICLE IS RECALLED FOR INSPECTION OF FRAME. TOYOTA DETERMINES IT DID NOT NEED REPLACING, AND SPRAY SOME TYPE OF COATING ON THE FRAME. IN OCTOBER OF 2019, AT 140K MILES, ONE OF THE TWO FUEL TANK STRAPS FAILS DUE TO CORROSION, FUEL TANK SUSPENDED BY ONE STRAP UNTIL DISCOVERED. JULY OF 2020, DISCOVER REAR AXLE DIFFERENTIAL COVER LEAKING DUE TO SEVERE CORROSION OF THE AXLE METAL. ATTEMPT TO TRADE IN VEHICLE AT TOYOTA IN OCT OF 2020, AND THEY PROVIDE A VALUE LESS THAN BOOK VALUE DUE TO CORROSION, AND STATE THEY ARE TAKING A RISK AS THE VEHICLE MAY NOT PASS INSPECTION. CALL TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE TO ASK FOR ASSISTANCE OR DISCOUNT TO PURCHASE A NEW TRUCK, AS WE HAD NO INTENTION OF SELLING THE TRUCK WE HAVE CARED FOR FOR 16 YRS, WITH ONLY 150K MILES, AND NOW WITH A BAD AXLE MUST BUY ANOTHER TRUCK ASAP IN 2020. THE TRUCK WAS NOT A DAILY DRIVER, WAS NOT DRIVEN FOR A WORK COMMUTE. IT IS AN EXTRA VEHICLE, OUR "NEW" DEPENDABLE VEHICLE FOR FAMILY TRIPS, VACATIONS, COLLEGE, ETC.., AND THE CONDITION AND CARE IS OBVIOUS IN THE PHOTOS. ALL MY FRONT SUSPENSION COMPONENTS FAILED. I NOTICED THAT THE FRAME HAD RUSTED THROUGH NEAR THE FRONT WHEEL PASSENGER SIDE AND HAS BUCKLED AND SHIFTED AS A RESULT. MY UPPER AND LOWER BALL JOINTS AND CV AXLE WERE DAMAGED WHILE MY TRUCK WAS IN MOTION TURNING INTO THE SAFEWAY GAS STATION CHESTER MD. FEBRUARY 9 OF THIS YEAR WHEN THE SUSPENSION FAILED TO SUPPORT THE TRUCK. THE PASSENGER SIDE BALL JOINT AND CV AXLE WERE DAMAGED. TIE RODS AND SWAY BAR STABILIZERS WERE ALL WORN AND BROKEN AS WELL.

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION COLUMN SHIFT PROBLEM OF THE 2004 TOYOTA TUNDRA TOYOTA TUNDRA. THERE IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM WITH THE STEERING COLUMN HOUSING SUPPORT. AFTER STARTING THE VEHICLE AND SUBSEQUENTLY ATTEMPTING TO SHIFT THE GEAR INTO REVERSE , THE GEAR SHIFT LEVER BROKE FREE AT THE STEERING COLUMN. I WAS ABLE TO STOP THE VEHICLE. ABLE TO PARK THE VEHICLE, BUT WAS UNABLE TO SHIFT INTO ANY OTHER GEAR. THE CONSUMER STATED IT APPEARED THE CAST ALUMINUM COMPONENTS SUPPORTING THE TRANSMISSION SHIFT LEVER APPEARED TO BE FLAWED. 2004 TOYOTA TUNDRA WITH 44000 MILES HAS DEVELOPED A BRAKE PROBLEM. AIR REPEATEDLY GETS INTO THE BRAKE LINES WITH NO LOSS OF FLUID CAUSING THE BRAKE PEDAL TO GO TO THE FLOOR WHEN BRAKING. THE TUNDRA HAS BEEN AT THE DEALER FOR FOUR MONTHS TRYING TO BE REPAIRED, THE TOYOTA REP HAS VISITED ON FIVE SEPARATE OCCASIONS, CALLED THE FACTORY ENGINEERS AND IT IS STILL NOT FIXED! TOYOTA HAS A RECALL FOR EXCESSIVE RUST AND THEY DID UNDERCOAT MY TRUCK. YESTERDAY WHEN I PULLED INTO MY DRIVEWAY I HEARD A SQUEALING SOUND FROM UNDER THE HOOD. I CHECKED AND FOUND MY POWER STEERING FLUID WAS LOW. I LOOKED UNDER THE TRUCK AND SAW A PUDDLE. FURTHER INVESTIGATION SHOWED THAT THE STEERING RACK HAS RUSTED THROUGH AND POWER STEERING FLUID STREAMS OUT WHEN YOU TURN THE STEERING WHEEL.

HIGH PITCH SOUND WHEN I GO TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL. POWER STEERING FLUID RESERVOIR EMPTY. TOOK TO DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAID THE RACK AND PINION IS NO GOOD AND HAS TO BE REPLACED AT A COST OF $1900.00. THE ISSUE I HAVE IS, I HAVE A CO-WORKER WHO BOUGHT THE SAME TRUCK I DID, IN THE SAME MONTH I DID. HIS HAS 145,000 MILES AND HIS RACK AND PINION WENT OUT TWO WEEKS AGO. LESS THAN 10,000 MILES BETWEEN THESE INCIDENTS IS QUITE A COINCIDENCE.

The contact pulled back the sunroof cover and discovered that the sunroof had detached from the vehicle. The contact pulled over to assess the damage and then drove to the residence. The frame on my newly purchased 2004 Toyota Tundra is rotted through. The consumer protections Toyota claims to have taken to correct this, in this instance, the application of water seal to the frame in 2014 has trapped moisture and caused extensive corrosion rendering the vehicle unsafe. I have visited multiple Toyota locations received the same message. Toyota claims no responsibility for this course of events leaving consumers in my position with no recourse and with an unsafe vehicle we cannot use and in my case have spent almost eleven thousand dollars on. Where is the responsibility to consumer safety?

I HAD RECENTLY PURCHASED A 2004 TUNDRA WITH KNOWING ABOUT THE RECALL FOR FRAME RUST. I BELIEVED TOYOTA HAD COMPLETED THE RECALL AND FIXED THE PROBLEM. NOT LONG AFTER OWNING THE VEHICLE, I NOTICED A SPOT OF RUST BUBBLING THROUGH THE ANTI CORROSION COATING. AFTER FURTHER INSPECTION, THE FRAME IS COMPLETELY CORRODED THROUGH AND CRACKED. THIS VEHICLE WAS MEANT TO USE FOR TRAVEL WITH MY FAMILY IN IT AND NOW IT'S NOT SAFE TO DRIVE AT ALL.

SO I WENT TO MY LONGTIME MECHANIC AND HE INFORMED ME IT WAS BAD, HE THEN BEGAN TO HIT PARTS OF THE FRAME WITH A SMALL HAMMER AND PUNCHED A HOLE THROUGH IT AND THAN STOPED ANY MORE HAMMERING. CONTACTED TOYOTA CUSTOMER CARE AND BASICALLY TOLD ME THERE ISN'T ANYTHING THEY CAN DO SINCE THE FRAME RECALL CAMPAIGN ENDED IN 2015. I NEVER RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF THE FRAME RECALL. I WAS TOLD THAT THERE WASN'T ANY RECALL FRO THE DIFFERENTIAL BUT THAT IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM FOR TUNDRA'S USED IN NE USA WHEREBY ROAD SALT IS USED IN WINTER. STARTED HEARING CLUNKING NOISE IN TRUCK. MADE APPOINTMENT WITH ASE CERTIFIED MECHANIC AND HE ASKED US TO COME BACK TO THE SHOP. THE STRUCTURE OF THE FRAME THAT HOLDS THE RACK AND PINION STEERING AND ANTI-SWAY BAR MOUNT WAS GONE. BOTH OF THE TOPS OF THE FRAME OF THE CROSS MEMBER THAT GOES UNDER THE ENGINE WAS MISSING. THE FRAME RAIL UNDER THE CAB IS SEPARATING. HE ADVISED THAT THIS CONDITION WAS A MASSIVE SAFETY ISSUE AND THAT I SHOULD CONTACT TOYOTA AND ADVISE THEM. I CALLED A DEALERSHIP IN ZANESVILLE AND THEY ADVISED THEY COULD NOT HELP BECAUSE IT WAS NOT A RECALL AND TOYOTA GAVE ME A CASE NUMBER AND TRANSFERRED ME TO SOMEONE ELSE WHO TOLD ME THEY COULD NOT HELP ME. I HAVE RECENTLY RECEIVED A FRAME RECALL NOTICE DUE TO EXCESSIVE CORROSION WHICH I ADDRESSED AT THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP. I WAS INFORMED THAT THE RUST HAD NOT PERFORATED THE FRAME AND THAT IT WOULD BE TREATED TO PREVENT FURTHER RUSTING. WHEN I PICKED UP THE TRUCK AT THE DEALERSHIP THE ASSOCIATE ADVISED ME THAT THE RECALL WAS DONE AND THAT A FULL SAFETY INSPECTION WAS COMPLETED WHICH REVEALED NO OTHER PROBLEMS. WHEN I RETURNED HOME I LOOKED UNDER THE TRUCK TO INSPECT THE FRAME AND NOTICED THAT BOTH SWAY BAR LINKS HAD CORRODED AND BROKEN OFF . I ALSO SUBSEQUENTLY TOOK THE VEHICLE TO AN ALIGNMENT SHOP BECAUSE I NOTICED THE STEERING WHEEL WAS NOT STRAIGHT AND WAS TOLD BY THE SHOP THAT THE TRUCK COULD NOT BE ALIGNED. I WAS TOLD THAT THE VEHICLE WAS VERY DANGEROUS TO DRIVE AND TO BRING IT TO THE DEALERSHIP IMMEDIATELY WHICH I DID. We had just provided a jump start from our Truck to a disabled older Honda Passport with a suspected low battery. This wasn't successful as it turns out it was a broken fuel pump causing the issue with the Honda. We had taken off the jumper cables, closed the hood and I pulled over to let my husband get into the vehicle. I was at idle, in drive with my foot on the brake when our Tundra started to accelerate rapidly. My husband wasn't even fully in the vehicle. We were on a one way street in a mixed residential/commercial neighborhood about 4 buildings down from a T intersection with a light. Luckily, the light was green in our favor as I had literally no control of the acceleration of the vehicle. I had my foot slammed on the brake with no response. We entered the intersection going roughly 25-35 miles an hour and careened left into the correct lane for our vehicle. Again, we were extremely lucky that there were no other cars in front of us nor any pedestrians. I was in a panic as the truck kept accelerating. I slammed on the emergency brake and threw the car from Drive into Park and only then did the truck slow it's crazy acceleration. We pulled over to the side of the road and I jumped out and wouldn't get into that truck again. My husband started the truck again and it seemed fine so he drove it the mile or so home with no incident. The next day he drove it 6 miles to a mechanic's shop , again with no incident. The mechanics performed tests on all the suspect parts and couldn't find anything defective. In the meantime, I came across stories on the internet about previous problems with some Toyota's Unintended Acceleration problems caused by faulty Electronic throttle systems so I have asked my mechanics to replace ours in our truck . We do not have a floor mat, so that clearly was not the issue.

THE CONTACT ADVISED THAT THE THROTTLE WAS REPLACED THREE TIMES TO NO AVAIL. THE DEALER THEN ADVISED THAT THERE WAS WATER LEAKING INTO THE CONNECTOR THROUGH THE WINDSHIELD GLASS. TOYOTA DEEMED THAT A NEW FRAME WAS NOT NEEDED AND DID THE CRC TREATMENT WHICH IS ABSOLUTE JUNK AND ONLY CAUSES THE FRAME TO RUST EVEN WORSE. I WANT A NEW FRAME INSTALLED BY TOYATA AND ANY OTHER RUSTY PART- ALL SHOULD BE REPLACED FREE OF CHARGE

I WAS DRIVING DOWN A SOMEWHAT BUSY 2-LANE ROAD LAST WEEK, GOING APPROXIMATELY 40MPH ON MY WAY TO WORK IN THE MORNING. I HEARD AND FELT A LOUD THUD, AND LOOKED IN MY REARVIEW MIRROR AND SAW A TIRE IN THE ROAD BEHIND ME AND THE CARS BEHIND ME WERE SWERVING TO AVOID IT. I THOUGHT I MIGHT HAVE DRIVEN OVER THE TIRE, AND WONDERED HOW I DIDN'T NOTICE IT IN THE ROAD. WHEN I CAME TO THE STOPLIGHT AT THE NEXT INTERSECTION A LITTLE WAYS DOWN THE ROAD, THE CAR THAT HAD BEEN DRIVING DIRECTLY BEHIND ME PULLED UP BESIDE ME, AND THE DRIVER TOLD ME IT WAS MY SPARE TIRE THAT HAD FALLEN DOWN FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY TRUCK THAT WAS NOW SITTING IN THE ROAD BACK THERE. LUCKILY, NO ONE HAD BEEN INJURED, AND ALL THE CARS HAD BEEN ABLE TO AVOID HITTING IT. AFTER RETRIEVING MY TIRE FROM THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD, I NOTICED THE METAL PART OF THE SPARE TIRE HOIST THAT HOLDS THE TIRE TO THE LIFT CABLE SITTING A FEW FEET AWAY IN THE ROAD. THAT METAL PIECE WAS COVERED IN RUST, AND THE MIDDLE PART OF IT WAS COMPLETELY GONE, HAVING GIVEN WAY WHEN THE TIRE FELL OFF. I DID A QUICK SEARCH ONLINE, AND THERE ARE COUNTLESS REPORTS OF OTHER TUNDRA AND TACOMA OWNERS EXPERIENCING THE SAME PROBLEM. MY TUNDRA USED TO BE OPERATED IN THE NORTHEAST BY A PREVIOUS OWNER, AND WAS PART OF THE FRAME RECALL EARLIER THIS YEAR FOR HIGHER THAN NORMAL RUST CORROSION ON THE FRAME. IT WARRANTED A COMPLETE FRAME REPLACEMENT THAT WAS COMPLETED IN JULY 2015. NOT SURE WHY THIS PART WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THAT REPLACEMENT, SINCE IT WAS CERTAINLY CORRODED AS WELL! THANKFULLY, NO ONE DRIVING BEHIND ME WHEN THE TIRE FELL OFF HAD BEEN INJURED BY HITTING THE TIRE, BUT IMAGINE IF ONE OF THOSE DRIVERS HAD NOT BEEN FULLY AWAKE THAT MORNING!

DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING VARIOUS SPEEDS, THERE WAS A SQUEAKING NOISE COMING FROM THE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL WELL AREA. THE VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED BY A DEALER WHO WAS UNABLE TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE SQUEAKING NOISE. AFTERWARDS, WHILE DRIVING 15 MPH ON A DRIVEWAY, THE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL SEPARATED FROM THE VEHICLE WITHOUT WARNING. THE CONTACT MANEUVERED THE VEHICLE TO SIDE OF THE ROAD WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT. I purchased 4 Cooper Adventurer 265/70R16 tires in 3-2022 from Pep Boys in Mobile, AL. I had a ASE Certified mechanic checked these tires and found there was a bulge on the tread of the passenger front & tread separation on the driver's rear tire. The tires have approx. 17K miles since purchase. Pep Boys refused to replace the 2 tires unless I paid a pro-rated fee which I refused due to the 2 defects out of 4 tires & the limited amount of miles on the tires. Also, I have rotated the tires 4 times since purchased. The mechanic that found the problems checked the shocks & struts and found no issues other that the 2 tires.

HI, I HAVE (5) ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT BF GOODRICH RUGGED TRAIL,(P265/70R16), RADIAL TIRES ON MY 2002 TOYOTA TUNDRA PICKUP TRUCK THAT HAVE 6,700 MILES ON THEM. AT APPROXIMATELY 4,500 MILES THE TIRES STARTED DEVELOPEING CRACKS BETWEEN THE TREAD OF EACH TIRE AND ONLY GOT CONSIDERABLY WORSE WITH PASSING TIME AND MILES. I CONTACTED BF GOODRICH WHICH TOLD ME TO TAKE THE VEHICLE FOR INSPECTION TO A DEALER THAT TOLD ME IT WOULD COST ME ALMOST $200 DOLLARS TO HAVE THE TIRES REPLACED AND THE OTHER DEALER SAID IT WOULD COST WELL OVER TWO HUNDRED DOLLARS FOR REPLACEMENT.THIS SECOND DEALER TOLD ME I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO OPERATE MY VEHICLE WITH THE CURRENT AND DETERIORATING CONDITION OF THESE TIRES. YOU HAVE TO PUMP THEM IN ORDER JUST TO STOP BEFORE HITTING ANYONE. AFTER DRIVING 30 MILES, WE HAVE TO REFILL THE MASTER CYLINDER WITH BRAKE FLUID. WE HAVE TAKEN IT TO THE MECHANIC THREE TIMES FOR THEM TO FIND NO LEAK. A FRIEND LOOKED AT IT AND FOUND THAT THE MASTER CYLINDER IS LEAKING INTO THE BRAKE BOOSTER. WE DO NOT FEEL SAFE DRIVING THIS VEHICLE IN THIS CONDITION. I HAVE AN ARTICLE FROM FOX NEWS STATING THAT OUR YEAR 2004 TOYOTA TUNDRA IS INCLUDED, BUT WHEN I CALLED THE DEALER AS WELL AS ENTERED IT INTO YOUR SYSTEM, THEY STATE IT IS NOT. I TOOK MY 2004 TOYOTA TUNDRA TO A LOCAL SERVICE CENTER BECAUSE I THOUGHT IT NEEDED SHOCK ABSORBERS. ONCE ON THE LIFT WE FOUND THE ENTIRE REAR SECTION WAS COMPLETELY RUSTED OUT WITH SEVERAL MAJOR PARTS JUST HANGING FROM THE FRAME. TOYOTA CLAIMS THEY SENT RECALLS IN 2015 HOWEVER I DID NOT GET THEM. I DID RECEIVE A VERY RECENT RECALL FOR AN AIR BAG AND FRONT COIL SPRINGS, WITHIN A WEEK THE TRUCK WAS TAKEN IN FOR THE RECALL. AT NO TIME WAS I INFORMED OF THE DANGEROUS ISSUE OF THE REAR SUSPENSION. I CALLED TOYOTA TO DISCUSS THE MATTER AND WAS TOLD THEY WOULD NOT DO ANYTHING TO CORRECT THE PROBLEMS. I AM VERY LUCKY I DID NOT HAVE AN ACCIDENT BECAUSE THE REAR COMPONENTS COULD HAVE FAILED AT ANY TIME WHILE I WAS DRIVING. TOYOTA RECALLED MY TUNDRA FOR A RUSTED FRAME. DEALER TOOK POSSESSION OF THE VEHICLE IN APRIL. THEY PROVIDED A RENTAL CAR, BUT NO OTHER UPDATE OR CONTACT UNTIL A WEEK AGO WHEN THE FRAME ARRIVED. NOW NEARLY COMPLETE, THEY WANT TO CHARGE ME $8000 FOR ADDITIONAL PARTS NOT COVERED BY THE RECALL WHICH THEY CLAIM IS NECESSARY TO MAKE THE VEHICLE PASS INSPECTION AND ROADWORTHY YET MANY OF THESE PARTS WERE UNAFFECTED PRIOR TO THE RECALL. AT NO TIME DID TOYOTA EVER INFORM US OF ADDITIONAL COSTS NOT COVERED BY THE RECALL. TWO OF THE ITEMS ARE CRITICAL TO THE VALUE AND DRIVABILITY OF THE CAR. THEY INCLUDE THE REAR AXLE AND DIFFERENTIAL WHICH I BELIEVE FAILED DUE TO THE SAME RUSTED ISSUES AS THE FRAME. THE ADDITIONAL PARTS AFFECTED WERE THE BRAKES. THE FRONT BRAKES SEIZED FROM 6 MONTHS OF NON USE AND MAINTENANCE BY THE DEALER, THE REAR BRAKES WERE FAILED BY FLUID LEAK FROM REAR AXLE WHILE IN POSSESSION OF THE DEALER FOR 6 MONTHS. IN SHORT, AFTER GETTING A NEW FRAME, THE DEALER WAS HOLDING TRYING TO CHARGE $8000 IN EXTRA REPAIRS OR THEY WOULD RETURN ME A TRUCK THAT HAD A NEW FRAME BUT WAS STILL INOPERABLE IN THE CONDITION UNDER WHICH IT WAS STORED BY THE DEALER. THE DEALER AND TOYOTA WERE RESPONSIBLE FOR MAINTAINING THE VEHICLE AND RETURNING IT IN AS GOOD OR BETTER CONDITION THAN THEY RECEIVED IT, BUT INSTEAD IT LOST 1005 OF ITS VALUE. I CANT DRIVE IT, I CANT SELL IT. EXCESSIVE RUST PRETTY MUCH EVERYWHERE. JUST HAD TO REPLACE THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL AND ASSOCIATED PARTS BECAUSE RUST CAUSED DIFFERENTIAL LEAK. COST WAS OVER 3,500. REPLACED RUSTED BRAKE LINES AND CALIPERS. TAILGATE WIRE RUSTED AND BROKE. OPENING MECHANISM TO TAILGATE IS RUSTED AND IS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT (IF NOT IMPOSSIBLE) TO OPEN/CLOSE. Purchased new Toyota Tundra in 2004. Performed rust recall at dealer on 07/22/15. October 2016, brakes failed. Brake line completely rusted. July 26, 2021, Toyota Tundra rejected at state inspection for badly rusted frame. Inspectors were unable to get wheel off to inspect brakes because of rust damage. Took to Toyota dealer on March 9, 2022. They performed airbag recall. Unable to do front suspension lower ball joints recall. Dealer said frame could break when they put it on lift. Dealer said Timeframe to repair frame had expired. Estimate to fix frame over $15,000; Plus would need a lot more parts to go with replacement. Vehicle has approximately 68,500 miles on it.

I had the dealer take my truck in for the frame recall. I asked for them to replace the frame because I was not comfortable with how they were handling it. Per the service record they filled in perforations and “undercoated. I did not believe that filling in existing perforations was the safest way to handle this. After brining the truck to a shop to check the steering we were told that they wouldn’t even put it up on a lift. The steering issue was that the rack and pinion steering was literally falling out due to the rusted frame. We drove this vehicle home and parked it. About a week later the spare tire fell out right onto our driveway. Needless to say, I am certain there are many more Toyota trucks out there ready to fall apart on the road. We contacted Toyota corporate several times to try to rectify this mishandling of our recall. We called and sent certified letters. We asked to share the cost of a new frame and they said no. We then had the truck towed to a shop who could do the work. They ordered a frame from Toyota only to be contacted 2 months later saying that the frame was discontinued and they wouldn’t be sending it after all (we were willing to pay fir the frame and install because we had a useless and UNSAFE vehicle. We finally found a shop over an hour away who could rebuild/fabricate the frame and replace the fallen out steering etc. we had that truck towed about 60 miles away to have this work completed. This mishandling of the recall by Toyota and their lack of customer care cost me a whopping $17,000! Again, unsafe Tundras out there for sure. Please advise…this is the 2nd time I’ve filled out this form and never heard anything. Thank you in advance. THEN, JUST A COUPE WEEKS AGO IN JUNE 2017, THE AIRBAG LIGHT CAME ON WHEN MY HUSBAND WAS DRIVING TO WORK ON THE HIGHWAY, AND THE LIGHT HAS NOT GONE OFF SINCE. WE TOOK IT TO A LOCAL AUTO SHOP TO DIAGNOSE THIS PAST WEEKEND, AND THEY SAID IT WAS AN ISSUE RELATING TO THE AIRBAG RECALL SERVICE--THEY SAID THEY'VE SEEN THIS NUMEROUS TIMES NOW, ALL IN VEHICLES THAT HAD THE AIRBAG RECALL SERVICE DONE. SOME OF THE COMMON RED FLAGS THEY MADE US AWARE OF WERE: HORN IS NOT WORKING, AS WELL AS THE CRUISE CONTROL. WE TOOK IT TO PALM BEACH TOYOTA IN WEST PALM BEACH, FLORIDA, THIS MORNING, AND THEY DIAGNOSED IT AS A SPIRAL CABLE ASSEMBLY THAT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED--AT A COST TO US OF $700 PLUS TAX. THAT IS SOMETHING THAT SHOULD BE COVERED UNDER THE RECALL, SINCE IT APPEARS TO BE SUCH A COMMON OCCURANCE, IT'S OBVIOUS THAT THIS STEMS FROM THE AIRBAG RECALL SERVICE.

CATALYTIC CONVERTER FAILED AT 55,023 MILES AND WAS REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY. THE SAME CATALYTIC CONVERTER FAILED AGAIN AT 110,000 MILES AND WHEN I WENT TO A DEALER WAS TOLD THAT IT WASN'T UNDER WARRANTY AND THAT I WOULD HAVE TO PAY $1200.00 FOR THE PART ALONE AND LABOR WOULD BE EXTRA. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 TOYOTA TUNDRA EQUIPPED WITH A WEBASTO HOLLANDIA 600 SUN ROOF ASSEMBLY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS INCLUDED IN THE RECALL ASSOCIATED WITH NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 10E038000 (VISIBILITY:SUN ROOF ASSEMBLY). THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE PARTS NEEDED TO REMEDY THE FAILURE WOULD BECOME AVAILABLE WITHIN A TWO WEEK TIME PERIOD. THE 2004 TOYOTA TUNDRA THAT I HAVE HAD TO HAVE THE BOTH FRONT ROTORS REPLACED DUE TO WARPING AND SERIOUS VIBRATIONS DURING BRAKING. I RESEARCHED THIS ON THE TOYOTA FORUMS AND ALL OVER THE INTERNET. THIS IS A WELL DOCUMENTED ISSUE THAT MANY OF US OWNERS HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT TO TOYOTA. TOYOTA HAS NOT ADDRESSED THIS ISSUE AS THE ROTORS WERE MADE TO SMALL FOR THE SIZE AND WEIGHT OF THE VEHICLE. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 TOYOTA TUNDRA. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH BEFORE APPROACHING A STOP SIGN. THERE WAS AN UNINTENDED ACCELERATION. THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS ENGAGED AND THE VEHICLE CONTINUED WITHOUT SLOWING DOWN. THE IGNITION KEY WAS REMOVED FROM THE IGNITION AND THE VEHICLE CRASHED INTO A WALL. THERE WERE TWO PASSENGERS IN THE VEHICLE THAT SUSTAINED INJURIES. THE AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY WITH THE IMPACT INVOLVED. A POLICE REPORT WAS TAKEN. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE BRAKES FAILED TO DISENGAGE THE CRUISE CONTROL AND THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO GAIN IN SPEED AS I WAS EXITING THE FREEWAY. I TURNED THE IGNITION OFF AND TRIED TO NAVIGATE A LEFT TURN AT 70+ MPH. WITH THE REAR END HOPPING SOMEHOW I NEGOTIATED THE TURN BUT COULD NOT TURN AGAIN. I CROSSED THE NEXT STREET AND ENDED UP GOING THRU THE WALL OF AN APARTMENT BUILDING AND STOPPED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE LIVING ROOM. IT WAS ONLY GOD'S DESIGN FOR ME NOT TO DIE THIS DAY. STARTED TRUCK, CONNECTED SMALL TRAILER TO HITCH. I NOTICED LIGHTS ON TRAILER NOT ON GOT OUT OF TRUCK TO PLUG AND UNPLUG CONNECTOR. LIGHTS CAME ON. ENTERED TRUCK , PUT FOOT ON BRAKE TO PUT IN GEAR. THE ENGINE REVVED UP AND THE TACH. WAS FLUCTUATING BETWEEN 1000 AND 6500 RPM WITHOUT EVER TOUCHING THE ACCELERATOR. I TURNED THE IGNITION TO THE OFF POSITION. MY 2004 TOYOTA TUNDRA DOUBLE CAB HAS AN EXCESSIVE AMOUNT OF RUST ON THE UNDERCARRIAGE. BECAUSE OF THIS RUST, THE CAMBER BOLTS CANNOT BE REMOVED TO PROPERLY ALIGN THE VEHICLE. I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT THEY WILL HAVE TO USE HEAT TO REMOVE THEM, ALONG WITH A LOT OF FORCE, AND IN TURN MAY DO FRAME DAMAGE IN THE PROCESS. I HAVE BEEN QUOTED BY MY DEALER $5,200 TO FIX THE PROBLEM WHICH INITIALLY STARTED WITH A SMALL SHIMMY IN THE STEERING WHEEL WHICH GREW INTO A BIG SHIMMY ESPECIALLY WHILE TOWING. THAT QUOTE DOES NOT INCLUDE ANY POSSIBLE CHARGED FROM THE BODY SHOP IF DAMAGE TO THE FRAME SHOULD OCCUR. I DO NOT HAVE $5,200 SO I ENDED UP WITH A NEW SET OF TIRES AND HALF OF AN ALIGNMENT BECAUSE THE CAMBER BOLTS WERE NOT ABLE TO BE REMOVED. HERE I AM MONTHS LATER AND MY NEW TIRES ARE SO BALD ON THE FRONT THAT I AM ACTUALLY SEEING THE TREAD SHOWING THROUGH. I HAVE ALWAYS LOVED MY TUNDRA, BUT ALL OF THIS RUST ON THE FRAME AND UNDERCARRIAGE IS VERY CONCERNING REGARDING THE LONGEVITY OF MY VEHICLE. I WAS TOLD THAT TOYOTAS LAST FOREVER. AT THIS POINT I FEEL THAT MY TRUCK IS DANGEROUS TO EVEN DRIVE BUT IT IS MY ONLY VEHICLE. I HAVE OWNED AND MAINTAINED MANY VEHICLES AND NEVER HAD RUST ISSUES LIKE THIS, NOR HAVE I EVER BEEN FACED WITH SUCH A COSTLY REPAIR ON A NOT SO OLD VEHICLE. I AM STUCK IN A BAD PLACE AND JUST DON'T KNOW WHERE TO GO OR WHAT TO DO. I DESPERATELY NEED MY TRUCK. WITHOUT IT I LOSE MY SOURCE OF TRANSPORTATION AS WELL AS MY ABILITY TO EARN A LIVING.
