ENGINE
43 complaints
My Toyota Tundra (2023) has a recall notice due to possible debris in the engine that is over a year and a half old. This still has not been repaired by the manufacturer. I can hear sounds like knocking coming from the engine and I am concerned that the vehicle could stall or stop while driving on the highway with my children and cause a severe crash. How do I get the vehicle engine replaced expeditiously? The Recall is 24V381.
Dec 18, 2025
The vehicle is affected by a manufacturer safety recall related to the engine. According to the recall, machining debris may not have been properly removed during engine production. This can lead to engine knocking, rough running, failure to start, loss of power, or the engine stalling while driving. The manufacturer has stated that the fix will require replacement of the engine assembly, but the remedy is not yet available. Because of this, the vehicle continues to be driven with a known engine defect and no repair timeline. The main safety concern is the risk of sudden loss of power or engine stall while driving, which could be dangerous, especially at highway speeds or in traffic. The vehicle has been inspected by a dealer, who confirmed that the recall applies but could not perform a repair, provide a timeline, or confirm that the vehicle is safe to drive while waiting for the remedy. No crash or injury has occurred so far. There have been no warning lights or specific failure events yet, but the concern is based on the acknowledged manufacturing defect and the possibility that the issue could occur without warning. The vehicle is still being driven because there is no available repair, no clear safety guidance from the manufacturer, and no alternative transportation or loaner vehicle provided. The concern remains that the vehicle could unexpectedly lose power or stall, putting the driver and others at risk.

The contact owns a 2023 Toyota Tundra. The contact stated that while driving at 65 MPH, the message to take the vehicle to the dealer to check the engine was displayed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer; however, no cause for the failure was found. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the failure persisted. The contact stated that the messages were displayed while on a long trip. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 53,000.
Dec 15, 2025
Approximately 10 minutes into an ordinary drive home from work, the engine abruptly began making extremely loud noise, as if metal or bricks were being thrown inside the engine. Within moments, the engine rapidly lost power and then completely shut down. At no time did any warning lights, engine lights, or malfunction indicators appear on the dashboard prior to or during the failure. This incident represents a serious safety hazard. This vehicle is my primary tow vehicle for transporting a horse trailer, and had this failure occurred while towing, I would have had no control, no engine power, and no ability to maintain speed, creating a high risk of a major collision or highway accident. The fact that the failure occurred with zero warning makes the danger even more significant. Toyota has confirmed that this engine failure falls under the active recall. Despite this, the mode of failure—sudden shutdown while driving without any alert—poses a severe and immediate safety risk to drivers, passengers, and the general public.
Dec 11, 2025
I was driving on the highway at 55 mph when my engine suddenly began making a loud knocking noise and lost power. I immediately pulled over, but as I was doing so, the vehicle lost all power and the engine light came on. This was a dangerous situation because I was in the middle of traffic and almost got rear-ended as I couldn’t keep up with the traffic speed. Let alone the warning light didn’t come on until I lost all power to the engine. This is a 2023 Hybrid Limited with under 15,000 miles! I could not believe it as I just got rid of my 2022 Tundra Limited with engine issues and purposely got a hybrid to avoid engine problems. Toyota, what on earth are you doing?!

POWER TRAIN

When trying to accelerate from coming to a stop I almost always have throttle hesitation and or lag. This had cause me to almost get into a few crashes when trying to turn left due to the truck not responding for a few seconds.
Nov 30, 2025
Throttle lag. Sometimes when I press on the gas after a stop the truck lags to accelerate which is dangerous and can cause an accident.
Nov 29, 2025
intermitantly, there is a severe power lag when accelerating from stop. When stopped (stop sign or light), and I hit the accelerator, there is no immediate power, then the vehicle will "rocket" from the stop position. This is creating a very dangerous situation, as the lag sometimes puts me in position of pulling out in front of oncoming traffic, or spins the tires and I lose control. This situation happens about 30% of the time from stop. I have not taken it in for service yet, but from researching, this is a known problem throughout the Tundra community. There are no warnings prior to this happening.

My 2023 Toyota Tundra motor just locked up exactly as the events discussed on the recall with the same model. Toyota stated that my truck was not affected yet here we are. Toyota opted to do a short block replacement instead of the long block as they did with the other trucks. I am concerned that I will have similar failure down the line due to residual metal in the turbo lines and or turbos that will cause turbo and or possible engine filatures later down the line. This is a safety issue because it can result in me being stranded if failure occurs aware from home. This needs to be addressed. Also my truck lurges and the gas pedal does not always respond. A serious investigation needs to be launched against Toyota, these issues can result in many Americans dying if left un checked!!
May 27, 2025
The engine began to misfire and stumble while idling. There was smoke present from the tail pipe when you would take off from the stop light. After Toyota ran an oil consumption campaign they came to the conclusion that the valve guides were bad and they need to replace both heads on the vehicle. It took 3 week for the repairs to be completed.

Engine hesitation.
May 10, 2025
Often times when accelerating from a complete stop, there will be a hesitation before the truck moves. Almost like it is about to die, but then accelerates. It can be dangerous at times when I need to pull through traffic to the opposite lane. I can’t have it stall and then someone hit the vehicle.

While parked on May 8, 2025, the sunroof glass on my 2023 Toyota Tundra spontaneously shattered. Minutes earlier, I had moved the vehicle from my driveway to the street. I have home security video that shows the sunroof panel visibly flexing when I closed the driver’s door—suggesting internal stress. Later, when I opened the door again and got inside, the glass suddenly exploded, creating a loud noise and sending shards across the sunroof liner. The glass appeared to explode outward rather than inward, suggesting a possible pressure buildup. This vehicle had just received its 40,000-mile service, and the glass was intact and undamaged beforehand. There were no warning lights, impact marks, or objects that could cause damage near the truck at the time. The failure occurred under normal conditions—no driving, no people around. I consider this a serious safety risk: If this had occurred while driving or with passengers inside, it could have caused injury or distraction-related accidents. I have multiple videos from my home security system showing: 1. The sunroof flexing under door pressure 2. The moment the glass shatters The dealer (Bayside Toyota) is scheduled to inspect the vehicle. The failed sunroof is available for inspection upon request. I have also asked the dealership to file this incident as a safety incident related to the Toyota Tundra.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

When accelerating from a stop, on occasion there is a multi second delay before the vehicle accelerates. I have had a few close calls with oncoming traffic when entering a new road from a stop due to these delays. It is quite worrisome. This has happened since new and after a software flash on the transmission.

the fuel guage on the dashboard shows inccurate infroamtion. I filled up the tank and went out of city. Once I came back home, next morning it was showing full tank. I was unsure about the quantity left, i filled up the tank and it was almost 11Gallon missing but it was showing full even on the gas station. It was fixed after a while but again today, it shows the full tank on dashboard but I saw half last night. I seached up online and it shows so many other people having the same issue. They also put some solutions but none of them worked for 2023 tundra. This could be a great risk if you are on a long route and do not know how much fuel left .
Oct 30, 2025
You start with a half tank of gas or so. Then you park on an incline like a driveway. When starting the truck again the fuel tank shows full tank and more miles available till empty which is inaccurate. The gauge does not reset till you refill. Workarounds online do not work. This is a safety issue in mountain driving when you park you may miss how much gas you have left and can stall causing an accident or being stranded in a remote area. Toyota says they are aware but online reports show it has been a known issue since 2022. I feel this should be addressed before someone is hurt or stranded. This issue has occurred multiple times to me.

I am currently leasing this 2023 Toyota Tundra Platinum and after about six I noticed that there was a delay in the throttle engaging and it felt like the truck bogged down. I asked the sales associate whom I bought the vehicle from if this was normal, and she said it was a normal safety feature. I have brought up a complaint with Toyota since November of 2023 about it and since then I have had my kids in the truck and there are multiple situations where i have had to cross traffic, go around someone on the highway almost being rearended because the vehicle does not engage and go as needed ultimately almost causing multiple wrecks. Toyota mechanics have ridden with me so I can show them, and they also have noticed the delay, and they have no answer for me. After researching the internet, I am not the only one having this issue with the 2022-2023 tundra. Here recently I have noticed that when you go from breaking to a stop and then go straight to the gas pedal there is a hesitation and then surge from the vehicle which I feel is also very unsafe. All I am asking is for the vehicle to be replaced so my family is safe. Please help me in any possible because Toyota will not.

The problem was identified approximately August 2023 and they claim there is no remedy for the problem as of today. However, they are selling the 2024 identical models without the issue. This means they have fixed the problem and not trying to remedy the problem in the vehicles that are already sold. Possibly fuel leaks and a fires are a serious problem that risking injuries, deaths or loss of properties. They need to be held accountable for an expedited solution. Thanks

Dec 03, 2025
On several occasions I have a dead pedal situation on acceleration from a brief stop. When you press the accelerator, the truck does not accelerate immediately. Instead there is a second or two pause before truck responds to accelerator input. When crossing traffic, this hesitation has caused several situations in which i have almost been t-boned.

THROTTLE LAG/LURCHING: When pressing the gas pedal at a full stop or pulling into traffic on the expressway the truck hesitates. it doesn't immediately go. This happens often...Transmission should be recalled. IT'S VERY DANGEROUS ESPECIALLY WHEN PULLING INTO TRAFFIC ON THE EXPRESSWAY
Dec 04, 2025
The vehicle inconsistently delays when accelerating from a stopped position. This is more frequently noticed shortly after starting the vehicle. This was first noticed around 10K miles, and my vehicle is currently at 25,235 miles. This has happened approximately 4-5 times. While at a stop sign, judging traffic to enter into the intersection I have pushed the gas with no response for 2-3 seconds then a sudden burst of power. Having worked as a state LEO/Trooper for over 25 years I find this very concerning. Any delay in acceleration for power could result in a collision.
Jul 07, 2025
When at a 2 way stop sign, for example, I am fully stopped, foot on the break, I see that there is a break in the cross traffic that indicates that I am safe to cross. I hit the gas and the car does not move for a few seconds. By now the car has me in danger and the other drivers who are coming towards me in the cross traffic. I count on the car to go when I hit the gas, especially when trying to get across a busy street or accelerating from a stop to merge into moving traffic. When the car does not move for a few seconds after hitting the gas, I’ve now been put in danger and have caused a disruption in the flow of traffic as well as putting others in danger. No lights on the dash indicate an issue, the truck is in normal mode, and I have not had this confirmed by a dealer yet, but I’ve read many testimonials from other 2023 tundra drivers having the same issue.
Feb 19, 2025
Truck will have a very bad hesitation when coming to a stop and trying to accelerate again before a complete stop. Many times this has almost got me into an accident when trying to pull out into traffic. You will push the gas and there in a 2-3 second delay before the truck will even move. This often makes it a very close call if you’re not expecting it.
Feb 18, 2025
Sometimes my truck hesitates from leaving a complete stop. I will press on the accelerator and there is throttle lag response, which causes me to pull out slower than expected. There was one time where I pulled out and lost throttle power in traffic. I have taken it to the dealer and reported this Issue. They flashed the ECU and said that was the only fix they had, but it didn’t do much difference I still experienced the throttle lag from a dead stop.

SERVICE BRAKES

Toyota requires the ABS system to be recalibrated. The only way is by going to a Toyota dealership and having the technicians use the fancy expensive diagnostic tools and computer software. I got my brakes changed by a reputable shop. However, I did not know whether they knew this or not. Now my front passenger pad is always rubbing on the rotor. These issues may cause high fuel consumption, strain on the transmission and driveline components, and even the possibility of fire. It would be really helpful if Toyota built vehicles that can easily be maintained as well as less complicated systems requiring owners to pay dealership prices for maintenance that should allow the owner to address it or any mechanic shops.

The contact stated that the failure occurred on several occasions. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed and determined that the brakes needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and opened a case. The contact was referred by the manufacturer to the NHTSA Hotline to report the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 25,600.

The contact owns a 2023 Toyota Tundra. The contact stated that since purchasing the vehicle, new, they noticed that when applying the brake pedal there would be a loud squeaking sound emitting from the vehicle. The failure was most prominent after the initial startup and when driving during rainy weather conditions. The contact stated the noise had increased in volume over time. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed the brakes had failed and needed to be replaced. The dealer informed them of the part being recalled under warranty coverage and that the replacement would be covered. The vehicle had not been repaired due to the dealer not receiving the brake replacement parts. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 4.

North Park Toyota knowingly sold me a 2023 Toyota Tundra with defective brakes and defective air conditioning. The brakes screach randomly, startling me as a driver and othwr drivers on the road. This causes me to react in an unsafe way, misapplying the brakes or not even applying the brakes at all when I hear the screaching sounds. Sometimes the vehicle brakes hard, sometimes not at all, and sometimes the vehicle feels as if the brakes are always on. It is very frightening. The dealership lied and said the brakes were still new at 18,000 miles. Then they said it was a "known issue" that they couldn't fix. They sold me a lemon and they knew it from the very beginning. I want my 2018 Tundra back that I traded in. They can buy this defective lemon back from me or I will sue Toyota and the individuals involved in selling this lemon to me. The brakes are defective 100 percent of the time I drive it, and it's worse when the weather changes. This truck ia dangerous and they knew it when they tricked me into buying it. I have complained to the dealership numerous times. They have no intention of addressing this problem whatsoever. I was conned into buying a vehicle they knew was a lemon.

My brakes have been squeaking since I purchased this brand new vehicle. It wasn’t too bad in the beginning, It was safe to assume, being new truck that I needed to drive it more or so I was told, by a friend. Then, after the first oil change, I started to realize that either my brakes were going bad, and/or it just didn’t feel too safe, especially driving through rainy conditions. So by the time my next few oil change with dealerships, I complained and wanted brakes checked. I was never told they are fine other than they were inspected on paperwork, so that was reassuring until, it started up again. Fast forward to recalls being done and again, I complained about brakes, and a Toyota consultant told me that was a common complaint and all he could do was clean up build up or dirt, and possibly may do the trick. Which was nice, and it helped for maybe a day or two and then started back up! I have no choice other than to trade it, although aside from that brake issue, I want to keep this truck! I feel this issue is dangerous and why hasn’t there been some type of solution from Toyota? Is it going to take for drivers and family to be killed in accidents for something to be done? This is aside from being annoying and embarrassing when pulling up in a brand new truck and these brakes squeezing so loudly - and also, and most importantly the safety of my family and self while in this truck! I love the truck and every other vehicle I have bought through Toyota, but this safety issue has forced me after no answers from Toyota to write this complaint in hopes something can be done soon. Please keep me updated.

While driving under normal conditions, my 2023 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro Hybrid experienced a sudden and severe loss of propulsion. The vehicle abruptly entered fail-safe (limp) mode and would not accelerate beyond approximately 5–10 mph. This occurred without warning and created an immediate safety hazard in traffic. Multiple warning messages illuminated simultaneously, including: Hybrid System Malfunction, Check Engine, Smart Stop System Malfunction, and Advanced Ultrasonic Detection Malfunction. The hybrid system effectively shut down and the vehicle could not maintain normal road speed. I brought the vehicle to a Toyota dealership. The dealership performed only ECM and hybrid ECU software updates and cleared codes. No mechanical inspection, oil pressure analysis, particulate inspection, turbo system evaluation, hybrid motor synchronization testing, or engineering-level diagnostics were performed. Toyota Corporate subsequently stated that the software update was the “final” resolution and declined further diagnostics. I was advised to return to the dealership if the issue reoccurs. This failure mode matches the documented loss-of-propulsion behavior described in Toyota’s V35A engine machining-defect recall (sudden power loss, limp mode, cascading system failures). Hybrid models are currently excluded despite using the same engine platform and exhibiting identical symptoms. Sudden loss of propulsion at road speed presents a serious crash risk. This appears to be a safety-related defect that is not being adequately investigated or remedied for hybrid models.

The truck will hesitate for a brief second while trying to accelerate from both stop and in drive where it'll jolt you forward. This will also happen when shifting into driving and it jolts you forward. This is a huge safety risk because my truck can stall when i need the truck to go. I have brought it up to the dealership which told me multiple times as "normal". No lights has popped up but I know my other cars doesn't stall when giving gas.

Hesitation when trying to accelerate. When I come to a stop sign and hit the gas, there’s always a hesitation
Feb 19, 2025
Consistently this vehicle experiences a hesitation to accelerate from a stop or rolling stop such as a stop sign or at a round about type intersection. When this occurs there may be up to a 2 second delay from when I press the accelerator to when the vehicle moves and once it does begin to move it will jump forward rapidly. I have had several near miss collisions upon entering round abouts when this occurs as well as at several stop sign intersections. This problem has existed from when the vehicle was at about 5,000 miles. I have reported this condition to the Toyota dealer on 2 occasions and they tell me Toyota does not recognize this is an issue and there is no fix.

Fuel gage will randomly reset itself to full when the tank quantity is less than full or fuel gage will not reset to full after the gas tank is filled. A manual reset of the computer is required to force the gage to reset to an accurate reading. Driver is at risk of running out of fuel due to the gage overstating the quantity of fuel remaining. Numerous reports of this situation are found on youtube along with instructions on how to manually reset the software to force the gage to reset. Gage has malfunctioned 4 times in less than two months. Dealer could not find an issue with the system and requires the vehicle to be brought in during the malfunction. Issue started around 8000 miles and 22 months after initial delivery to owner.

Cannot find the correct tire size in the drop-down. But these tires are Bridgestone Dueler H/T 265/60/20 685. These tires are extremely unstable on this vehicle going any rate of speed on the highway with rigid surface. The vehicle sways back-and-forth as if it was on ice and has a little to no control road conditions are clear when this happens. Even worse when it rains I want to take the vehicle on the highway. I believe due to the gap of the tread pattern. They are catching on the grooves and throw the vehicle back-and-forth dangerously. I had also had a trailer that weighed an estimate of 8500 pounds with the tires, and was worse as the trailer would fishtail tire pressure is at factory recommendation as well. These tires need to be reevaluated and does not belong on this type of vehicle. There are no warning lamps that come on other than a very unstable ride. My vehicle was involved in an accident due to a driver swerving directly into our lane on the highway as a result of trying to gain control. The tires were very unstable, and did not have control as a result of trying to gain control on the passenger side of my truck I slid in the concrete barrier when trying to correct the steering.

I own a 2023 Tundra, 4601 miles at the time of incident. While driving at 55mph, the driver's rear tire experienced a blowout. Upon examination, an approximately 100mm vertical split in the sidewall of the tire was evident. Photographs at the time of the incident show no impact to the tire from road debris, nor had I noticed any impacts that would have caused the failure. I had driven all 4601 miles on the truck and at no point had I noticed any observable defects on the tire prior to the sudden rupture. There was no warning prior to the sudden failure of the tire. During the event, I struggled to maintain control of the vehicle until I could bring it to a stop. As of the time of the report (4/18/23, 8:19AM) the tire is in my possession. When slowing down and then accelerating OR coming to a stop on an incline and then gassing it, the truck will stall for 1-2 seconds and then launch off. This has almost caused a wreck multiple times as I get stuck in the roadway for 1-2 seconds before being able to cross the lane and complete my turn. The dealership has said they've heard of the issue but could not duplicate it. No dashboard lights came on during the power failure.

Hesitation From Stop and Surge Concerns. this may cause traffic surge, collison in my front for having no control of the speed if I end up pressing the gas all the way which it cause a quick surge of speed, due to the hesitation when pressing the gas, this happened to my car for a lot of times now which I ignored it until I saw the help from the Toyota Tundra forum, that I can actually send a report to NHTSA.

Jun 12, 2024
Pulling into traffic from a stop or near stop (such as a stop sign or yield sign), the vehicle does not respond to the gas pedal. After significant lag / hesitation, the vehicle lurches forward. This has happened multiple times starting around September 2023, and the problem is worse when the engine is cold (cold mornings) although it happens at all times to some extent. It seems to have gotten worst and happens almost daily at this point. There have been several times that the lag / hesitation has left me sitting in the middle of an intersection and almost caused me to be hit by other vehicles. I have had the vehicle in to the dealer 5 times for this issue and have been told it’s “normal” or they cannot replicate it. On the 5th time, Toyota corporate sent a representative Anthony Merejo, who verified in email that he experienced the hesitation and was sending the data back to Toyota engineering to see if there was a fix. That was about 6 weeks ago and I haven’t heard back.

The fuel gauge will randomly reset itself to full. This poses a safety concern as the truck may run out of gas while it is showing that it is not empty. My 2023 Toyota Tundra has an intermittent issue where the throttle lags or hesitates when accelerating from a complete stop. The problem occurs unpredictably and causes the truck to fail to respond when pressing the gas pedal. The issue appears to be related to the engine or throttle response system, and the vehicle is available for inspection upon request. This malfunction puts my safety and the safety of others at risk because the hesitation can occur while turning left across traffic or merging into traffic, leaving the truck momentarily stalled in the path of oncoming vehicles. The problem has not yet been officially reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or service center, but it has happened multiple times under normal driving conditions. The vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, or insurance representatives at this time. There were no warning lights, messages, or other indicators before or during the hesitation; it happens without any prior notice.
Nov 25, 2025
Over the course of ownership I have had frequent instances of loss of power and/or lack of acceleration resulting in almost stalling out while trying to take off. This causes dangerous situations when trying to pull out into traffic because you never know when the vehicle might hesitate and crest unsafe distances between you and other moving vehicles.
Nov 25, 2025
When from a stop vehicle does not accelerate as normal, especially while turning. Lag and hesitation is experienced for a moment and then catches causing a rapid acceleration. When turning across oncoming lanes of traffic the unexpected lag and lack of acceleration considerably increases risk of side collision from cross traffic and risk of rear collision from traffic behind due to inability to know consistent time, speed, and acceleration needed to safely cross lanes of traffic and expected acceleration speed anticipated by vehicles from rear. Concern has been brought up to dealer and properly notified. Dealer was unable to replicate. No dash warnings appeared.

We were driving down the highway and there was a startling loud explosion and I pulled the vehicle to the side of the road for inspection. I discovered that the rear panoramic sunroof had completely shattered, with no obvious cause. There were no other vehicles around. It was sunny and 90 degree F ambient air temperature outside. The air conditioner was running at the time. Fortunately the headliner screen was closed, otherwise the rear passengers may have been showered with broken glass.

Driving on the freeway when I heard what sounded like a gunshot. I kept looking around to see what had hit me. It sounded like it came from the right side of my truck. I couldn't see anything amiss. I started hearing crackling when my hearing cleared up a little. I drew back the moonroof cover to find that the glass had shattered. I don't recall seeing any debris strike the truck. I've saved video on my dash cam and can't see anything from the roadway coming at the truck during that time.

The rear passenger window trim will come loose and could fly off and hit other vehicles. I have brought this back to the dealer twice and they claimed to have replaced it but it is still malfunctioning. Upon MY investigation it seems like the actual door was not hemmed properly thus not allowing the window trim to seat and stay seated. The driver's side rear door does not have this issue. Furthermore, I have checked new vehicles in the dealer's inventory and found the same issue on multiple NEW vehicles at North Park Toyota in San Antonnio, TX.

regarding my 2023 Toyota Tundra. The passenger side front window is non-operational, having come off the track and proving impossible to raise. Upon consulting the dealership, it was determined that the Regulator and Motor for the window require replacement. It has come to my attention that this issue is not isolated to my vehicle, as numerous reports on social media platforms highlight a recurring problem with faulty windows in this model. The prevalence of inoperable windows, whether stuck in the up or down position, poses a potential hazard. I urge the NHTSA to investigate and address this matter promptly to ensure the safety of all Toyota Tundra drivers and passengers.

I have been informed that my vehicle was affected by the recall involving the machining debris and therefore unsafe to drive. The dealership in Kendall Toyota, who is not normally my service dealer called me and after removing all my belongings and waiting for hours I was told my rental car was a Chevrolet Traverse, which I was unable to use for my business and was told I had to leave it with them indefinitely, and so I called my usual dealership in Hollywood, who informed me they would be able to help me out with a more appropriate rental vehicle the next day I advised the dealership at Kendall picked up my truck and went to Toyota of Hollywood only to be sent away stating that they did not have the remedy and we’re not able to help me. I have since followed up and every time I go in they tell me again only once I get there they don’t have the remedy and this is happened three times. I feel unsafe driving the vehicle and would very much like to have a safe and dependable vehicle to which I feel I am owed considering how much I paid for this truck . There has been a known issue and recall on this vehicle since August with both personal and public life threatening events. Official notifications are just being shared from Toyota with no sight line provided for permanent fix. This causes significant cause for concern and angst in daily driving of the vehicle. If a fix isn’t available, a complete vehicle recall and exchange should be provided as resolution. These are serious life threatening circumstances that could impact myself, my family or innocent bystander. I feel unsafe and hold Toyota and National highway traffic and safety directly liable. My vehicle has cumulatively been at the dealership for almost 3 months. My family and I are under an assortment of insurmountable mental, and physical stress with the level of unsafe, unfit, and unreliable attempts to not only trust this vehicle to operate safely, but trust the service technicians to safely, and correctly diagnose the many unsafe issues with this vehicle. I have made several attempts in filing cases, complaints, and attempts of contact, to resolve these multiple issues with the manufacturer, and have had no such luck. On February 25, 2025, I took my 2023 Toyota Tundra VIN# [XXX] to Stokes Toyota Beaufort, SC, for its 45,000-mile service. Just 300 meters after leaving the dealership, my truck caught fire, causing significant damage and putting my safety at risk. I am sharing pictures of the incident and the warning messages I received on the dashboard. I was on my way back to the dealership when this happened. At first, the truck was shaking and losing power. I managed to make a U-turn to return to the dealership, but then the engine stalled. At that moment, I started seeing warning messages on the dashboard. I immediately called the dealership to inform them that I was experiencing issues with my truck. While still on the phone with the dealership, I noticed smoke coming from the passenger side of the hood. Moments later, flames started emerging from the hood. I quickly hung up and called 911. 1- What component or system failed or malfunctioned? I believe the engine and possibly the brakes failed (based on the dashboard warning messages). 2- How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? Within minutes, my truck burned completely. I am grateful I didn't have my children with me at the time. 3- Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? I received formal letters from Toyota Manufacturer, Toyota Distributor, and the dealership, stating that they are sorry for what happened but cannot offer any assistance with my claim. 4- Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives, or others? Yes, the insurance company, fire marshal, dealership, Toyota, and Engineering Analysis Associates (EAA) have all inspected the vehicle. 5- Were there any warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure? Yes, the truck was shaking, losing power, and eventually stopped completely, displaying warning messages on the dashboard. He had difficulty steering but was able to safely brake to a stop in the middle of the road. Cars were forced to pass him on the shoulder. He was unable to restart the engine for what he estimates was approximately one minute. He was finally able to restart the engine and drive home. The next day I drove it to the Toyota dealer. After the replacement everything was fine until my friend hit her toe against driver side seat frame covered by felt tape. From the factory the truck comes with plastic frame guards to prevent injury to rear passengers but Toyota has failed to fix the issue several times. I recently found out that all Tundra's with powered seats have this safety issue as I was talking to dealer employee who recently purchased a 2024 Tundra then we walked the lot and every single higher trim Tundra with powered seats all have this felt tape over the metal substructure. There is some sort of severe throttle lag/takeoff issue that happens intermittently, but almost always several times a day. always from a stopped position. 2.When you are turning left (going across the oncoming lane) you hit the gas pedal and nothing happens for 2-3 seconds and then it shoots off like a rocket ship. I have never been so close to a severely injured or more likely fatal car crash. this severity has happened twice, once with my daughter in the car. 3. Not yet. looks like there had almost been a class action law suit back to 2022 model year (same engine I believe). 4. No 5. Tundra has had and has throttle lag. Lag is so noticeable that other drivers notice. Following lag is a burst of power causing a jerk and or lunge forward. This is after a long pause. Happens on a roll, or start-stop situation. My truck has had the toyota tsb applied a long time ago.

I experience delayed throttle response and throttle lag daily. Acceleration is unpredictable. The vehicle barely moves in some cases when pressing the gas pedal. Other times, the tires will chirp. The vehicle will sometimes hesitate so long to accelerate, that I've almost been T-boned and I've held up traffic. It seems like the truck thinks I'm going to run into something, even when there's nothing in front of me. The delay is sometimes 3-5 seconds before it will allow any acceleration. This seems like a huge safety issue, not being able to get out of the way of oncoming traffic and having such an unpredictable, and often delayed throttle response.

1. What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? Multiple safety systems failed simultaneously, including: SRS Airbag System Pre-Collision System Vehicle Stability Control (VSC/TRAC) Advanced Ultrasonic/Sonar System The engine is also subject to Safety Recall 25TA14 (potential loss of motive power). The vehicle is currently located at Crown Toyota in Ontario, CA and is fully available for inspection. 2. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? I was driving on the 60 freeway with my two small children when all of these safety systems failed at the same time. The truck also began pulling to the right and hesitating during acceleration. With the airbag system, pre-collision system, and stability control disabled, our safety was seriously at risk, especially at freeway speeds. 3. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Yes. Crown Toyota advised me not to drive the vehicle and instructed me to have it towed immediately as an emergency. They confirmed the warnings and safety alerts. 4. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives, or others? The vehicle was inspected by Crown Toyota service technicians. They noted the safety system malfunctions and the active engine recall. Toyota Corporate has opened a repurchase case: #251118002114. 5. Were there any warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? Yes. While driving, the dashboard displayed multiple malfunction warnings: Airbag malfunction Pre-collision system malfunction Vehicle Stability Control malfunction Sonar system malfunction The “Contact Dealer Immediately” message also appeared. These warnings first appeared on November 13, 2025, while I was on the freeway.

The contact owns a 2023 Toyota Tundra. The contact purchased the vehicle in January 2023 and had several mechanical and tire related failures with the vehicle. The contact stated that the vehicle was not handling normally. The contact stated that that the steering wheel was constantly turning to the right and needed to manually be returned to center to remain in the intended lane. The contact stated that the failure occurred at various speeds. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to the dealer however, the dealer was unable to duplicate the failure, and that the wear on the tires were normal. The contact stated that the wear was noticeable to the extent that the tread was almost worn on the passenger’s side front tire at 12,000 miles. The contact stated that the tires were the original equipment and were rated at 30,000 miles of service. The OEM tires were Falken Wild Peak A/T 3WA; Tire Size 265/60/R20 112H: DOT 1V40H. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The contact replaced the original tires with Bridgestone Tires; Tire Size: 265/60/R20; DOT Number: 17XEDHT1. The contact stated that the dealer had mounted the tires and balanced and aligned the steering wheel. The contact stated that the steering failures with the vehicle steering to the right persisted. The contact checked the tires and had taken the vehicle to a tire dealer to check the alignment and the tire condition and was advised that the new tires were showing wear, and that the vehicle was not properly aligned. The vehicle was not repaired. The original dealer was contacted, and the contact was informed that no assistance would be provided. The contact also reported failures with the transmission and other vehicle systems, and had a case opened by the manufacturer. The failure mileage was approximately 27,142. The Bridgestone tire wear mileage was approximately 10,000.

The engine of my 2023 Toyota Tundra failed at approximately 34,500 miles. The failure involved sudden loss of oil pressure and severe internal damage, with metal shavings found in the oil and oil filter. The oil filter itself detached during the incident and was later recovered with metallic debris inside. The vehicle and the recovered filter are available for inspection upon request. While accelerating from a stop light on a busy morning public road, the engine suddenly lost power, illuminated multiple warning lamps, and entered limp mode with “low oil pressure” and “engine malfunction” messages. The truck rapidly leaked oil, creating a roadway hazard and putting me, my wife & son, and other drivers at risk of accident. I was able to limp the vehicle home .5 miles from the incident at reduced speed, but complete engine seizure was a possibility. Toyota of Fort Walton Beach inspected the vehicle, confirmed metal shavings in the oil pan, documented codes P05202 and P052049 (low oil pressure and oil pressure sensor stuck in range), and noted “oil was very metallic.” The vehicle was inspected by Toyota dealership technicians and corporate representatives. I also have possession of the oil filter and photos/videos from the inspection. At the moment of failure, the dash displayed low oil pressure, check engine light, and a message regarding engine/electronic malfunction. Prior to this event, there were no warning signs — the truck had been serviced two weeks earlier at 33,360 miles, and I drove approximately 1,200 miles without incident until the catastrophic failure. This failure matches the description in Toyota Recall 24V-381. My vehicle’s build date (February 27, 2023) is less than two weeks outside the published recall production window, yet the symptoms and inspection results are identical. I respectfully request NHTSA investigate whether additional 2023 Toyota Tundra vehicles outside the current recall window are affected, as my case demonstrates the same hazards.

After braking or coming to a momentary stop, such as a stop sign, the tundra’s throttle is delayed for 2-3 seconds. Full pedal to floor, no acceleration. Extremely scary when it occurs, results in pulling out into traffic and having to wait 2-3 seconds before accelerating. It seems to be the ECM hunting for gears after slowing, hesitating, then selecting 6th gear and bottoming out before downshifting to 2nd and nearly burning out as it finally accelerates away from rapidly approaching traffic. Often happens, or is noticed more frequently, when turning right from a stop sign. Please have Toyota fix this, they are not acknowledging there is an issue!

The engine has 13,441 miles on it and it has been consuming 4 quarts of oil in 1700 miles. The dealer sealed the engine and is performing an oil consumption test. Approximately 500 mile into the test the check engine light started flashing due to a misfire. The dealer found that the #1plug was fouled out and had to be replaced. At 1029 miles into the test the truck was idling in a parking lot for about 8 minutes when it started to misfire and stumble. After stepping on the throttle to clear out the misfire, the dash lit flashing multiple warnings including the breaking system was stuck on hindering the truck from being able to move. After several restarts and playing with the parking brake I managed to get the parking brake off. It still had the flashing check engine light on and flashing. The pre-collision light was flashing, along with the traction control light was flashing and none of the safety systems were working.

The issue is with the auto-braking or pre collision system. Have had multiple instances where system has engaged at low speed which also engaged the auto engine stop feature when it was not necessary. Have noticed system engages on roads with curves where it thinks the vehicle in the other lane is in front of me when its not. The most unsafe thing that happened was when a vehicle quickly changed lanes in front of me and slowed slightly. I saw the other vehicle make the unsafe lane change and was covering the brake and when i pressed the brake it went out from under my foot braking hard on its own when it was not necessary. Vehicle slowed from 65 to about 35 quickly almost causing vehicle behind me to rear end me with no way to stop the system. Since i have owned this vehicle auto brake system has engaged about 5 times and all were not necessary or unsafe. I have lowered sensitivity setting and still have the issue, and am unable to disable system.

I backed out of my drive way and then proceeded to the stop sign at the end of my street which is three houses from mine. Turned left off of [XXX] onto [XXX] I started to accelerate to speed limit which is 25. I then looked at speedometer it stated I was going 15 mph then all of a sudden my truck accelerated to almost 69 mph then my truck slammed in the brakes. My foot was still on the gas petal and I never felt the gas petal push down when it accelerated. No my cruise control was not activated and no lights came on to indicate what it was doing or that there was anything wrong. Steve’s Hometown Toyota could not find anything wrong with the truck, but then again I don’t trust them I gave them a month to get the guy to fix it and the part and the loaner to fix the canister on my Highlander but when my appointment came up the guy couldn’t stay the full 5 hours to fix my car and they did not have a loaner and did not have the part. That is how I got into the 2023Toyota Tundra. Then it develops a brain that it wants to go faster then slammed on the breaks. That truck hurt me and gave me whiplash. They want me to pick it up. I am not driving it. I am lucky no one was in the truck and on the road the time the incident happened. I have made a report to Toyota and let them know that I have doctors notes and my daughter was on the phone with me through the truck not on my phone. I am afraid that they are going to put me back into the same truck that hurt me. Know I find out that the 2023 trucks have a recall on them. They still don’t have an answer for me. The tailgate opens on its own while I am traveling down the highway. I now have to brace anything I put in the bed of the truck lest the tailgate opens on the highway and I spill my load and cause a catastrophic injury or death on the highway. When shifting into Park, having to keep my brakes firmly engaged due to a periodic and rapid acceleration of the engine. At cruising speed, on the highway, a vibration that only occurs when climbing hills coupled with a rapid pulsing of the engine/transmission. At cruising speed, on a level ground, the transmission rapidly disengages and reengages. Weekly I have gauge and infotainment malfunctions wherein I have to turn off the truck and restart it to make the gauges work. The gauges just freeze and fail to respond. The compass flips direction. Malfunctioning gas gauge. The backdoors lock and will not unlock. Occasionally, when they lock, I have to crawl into the backseat, from the from seat and manually unlock the door from the inside of the truck. A flat tire where when I went to change it, the jack bent…in my driveway. I now have to carry a 3rd-party jack and tools to handle emergency repairs. A regular malfunction of the rearview mirror. A cracked drivers seat. 6-months after purchasing the truck, the door trim came off in my hand. When I spoke to the Toyota tech, he advised me that this was not covered under warranty, and suggested that some customers keep the trim off as “most of the trim was installed with double-sided tape and would just fail again”. Though, to be fair, he did offer to, at several hundred dollars a pop, keep replacing the trim every couple of months. While my Truck is parked in the garage, when the trucks system does an update, it opens my garage door.

While traveling at highway speed, with no warning my truck lost acceleration power. There were other vehicles in the road, and I had to travel across multiple lanes to get to an exit while the vehicle was continuously slowing down. This put myself and my children at risk due to the sudden loss of power. I was able to exit and turn the engine off, after which, the problem seemed to stop. I took my truck to the dealership where it was purchased to have them check the truck, and they were unable to reproduce the problem. Their inspection only showed them that there were engine misfires. They told me the issue would need to be reproduced or would need to happen to me again before anything could be done about it or before they could get Toyota involved. I did explain that I had the "Reduced Engine Power" and "Brake System Malfunction" warning light that, through my research, have been experienced with other Tundra owners when they had "engine failures."

I am writing to bring to your attention a critical safety concern regarding the Toyota Tundra, specifically related to the rear tailgate functionality. It has come to my attention, and I have personally experienced, that the rear tailgate of the Toyota Tundra can unexpectedly open while the vehicle is in drive mode if the key fob is accidentally pressed. This poses a significant safety risk to not only the driver but also to any passengers and other drivers on the road. The unintended opening of the tailgate can lead to cargo falling out onto the road, causing accidents and potentially endangering lives. I believe that this issue warrants immediate attention and investigation by the National Transportation Safety Authority (NTSA). It is imperative that Toyota addresses this issue promptly to prevent any potential accidents or injuries. I urge the NTSA to conduct a thorough investigation into this matter and work with Toyota to implement a solution that ensures the rear tailgate remains securely closed while the vehicle is in motion. Additionally, I recommend that Toyota issues a safety recall to rectify this potentially hazardous defect. Thank you for your attention to this matter. I trust that the NTSA will take appropriate action to address this safety concern and ensure the safety of all road users.

This vehicle has tow mirrors that are located way too high for the driver to see over them - I'm 5'10" and my son is 6'0" and neither of us can see over these mirrors. Over the past year I have had multiple close calls because of the very large blind spot created by the tow mirrors on this vehicle. There is also excessive plastic around the mirror that excerbates the problem. It is only a period of time before a serious accident or a pedestrian collision will happen because of this manuracturing/design defect. Very concerned and disappointed. One specific incident was when I was turning onto a road at a slight and looked both ways and pulled out in front a car that was behind the blind spot and going 60 mph. A few complaints: #1: First is the infotainment system continuously requests a pin be entered. I would enter the pin, but the pin screen pops up again and again whenever the system is on. Had the dealership look at it, they stated the info system has the latest software and I was instructed to contact Toyota. After a 2+hour phone call, resetting app passwords a few times, resetting pin a few times, starting the truck a certain way, and other things I cannot completely remember, finally got it to accept the pin and stop pin request screen from popping up. That worked for about 1 week, and since then the screen pops up. I no longer try to enter the pin just hit the x button (kind of hard and dangerous entering 6 digit pin 30 times while going 75 on the highway). I would estimate screen popping up about every 1-2 minute. #2: Truck has 6,400 miles on it, brakes started squealing around 4k miles or less, getting progressively worse. I have tried washing brake dust away at car wash, no help. Sounds like when a car is getting to the last of the brakes. Are they that worn in 6k miles, I hope not, but how am I supposed to know when or if they need to be replaced? Very annoying, and dangerous since I can't rely on the brakes squealing to let me know need replaced. #3: 1 week ago after stopping at a red light, about 5 seconds passed when the truck jerked violently and slightly moved forward, all while I had the brake pedal pressed. It was so hard I was certain I had just got rear ended, but as I looked in the mirror preparing to get out of the truck, I saw the car behind me was barely approaching 20+ feet back. This is only time it has happened so far, but very concerning, will let the dealership know as well, but I can already hear their response "we weren't able to replicate the issue". Fuel line recall, still haven't fixed it (but will be setting appointment to take it in for all the described things, again, and hopefully get my 2nd key, been 9 months already).

I have been getting my Tundra alignment done every other month since I purchased it brand new and have actually run out of warranty on the alignments and have been coming out of pocket ever since. The vehicle pulls quite aggressively to the right unless extra pressure is applied to the left side of the steering wheel. It has steadily gotten worse after every alignment and I can’t even pull an empty trailer with a truck that has the towing package. I spoke with the manufacturer who believed that they have “not failed in repairing the vehicle” I am 8 months pregnant and am terrified to drive this vehicle. It sits while I drive my 25 year old beater car that feels safer because it can at least drive straight. My 2023 Toyota Tundra currently has a open recall for the fuel tube rubbing against another near component increasing the risk of fire. The life of my family/public and myself were put at risk every day as this can cause a fire which is life threating. This problem has been confirmed by Toyota however there is no safe remedy for it at the moment. There is also a problem with the suspension/ball joints. Every time I turn the steering wheel while driving forward or reverse there is a clicking noise coming from what appears to be the suspension or ball joints or around that area. That issue has been reported to the local dealer however they cant duplicate that issue, according to the service adviser. There were no warning lamps turned on prior to any of the aforementioned. One thing I did notice was that the gas mileage significantly dropped even though I was driving the same distance. Also at times there is a strong fuel odor after a trip is completed or at times while the truck is operating. I am highly concerned for the safety of my family and others that are around my truck while operating as this fuel tube issue is a cause for an increased risk of fire. Toyota of Seattle is where my truck currently is at however the dealer has yet to fix both issues.

This vehicle is dangerous. There are many more, complaint level issues, but there are at least three real safety issues. First, the automatic braking system has engaged multiple times for no reason. Traveling down a straight, flat road in good weather, the brakes suddenly went fully engaged. On one occasion my dog was thrown forcefully into the dash and was injured and then afraid to ride in the truck. It makes me afraid of the truck as well and could have easily caused an accident. Second, there is the known fuel line issue. This could, according to the manufacturer, be a fire risk. However, there's no remedy. So I'm driving around this truck that could catch fire, that likes to slam on the brakes for no reason. Third, there's something wrong with the windshields in these trucks. Mine recently was broken while the vehicle was parked. It just cracked. Just driving it home made the crack quadruple in size. It's unsafe to drive as is. I contacted Toyota and they aren't interested in considering that there's something wrong with the windshields, yet they can't replace it, because they're back ordered due to so many being broken. So I have a truck that slams on the brakes unpredictably, that might catch fire, that the windshield broke for no reason but can't be replaced. I've spoken several times with Toyota corporate about this and they have no answers and keep referring to the dealer who tells me there are no answers and to call toyota. It's a classic runaround while my $70,000 truck is unsafe to drive. It's absolutely unsafe and the NHTSA needs to act to protect consumers from these vehicles.

The contact owns a 2023 Toyota Tundra. The contact stated while driving at approximately 65 MPH, and at various speeds, the instrument cluster and the radio would stop functioning. The contact stated that the message on the screen stated that a PIN should be entered to be able to view the instrument cluster. The contact stated that the failure had become constant. The contact also stated that the emergency alert, or 911 alert feature, linked to the same system as the radio and instrument cluster also failed to function as designed. The contact had taken the vehicle to a local dealer however, the dealer could not determine the cause of the failure and stated that the system was operating as designed. The vehicle had not been repaired. Additionally, the contact had received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V566000 (Fuel System, Gasoline). The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. The failure mileage for the other electrical system failures was approximately 17,000. VIN tool confirms parts not yet available.

The new Tundra most of the features are controlled by the 14-inch Infotainment screen. The screen has gone completely dark and irresponsive to touch, power on/off, and hard reset by the dealership. Given that so many of the truck's safety features are controlled in this system, the vehicle is unsafe to operate. I have taken the vehicle to the dealership for service and beyond the hard reset (disconnect and reconnect the battery) which they've done, they are unable to diagnose what the problem is or how to fix it.
