I WAS SITTING IN THE DRIVE THRU LINE OF A FAST FOOD RESTAURANT WHEN THE CAR TOOK A SUDDEN SURGE FORWARD. I STEERED HARD TO KEEP FROM HITTING THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME AND MANAGE TO HIT THE BUMPER ON RIGHT SIDE DOING OVER 1500 DOLLARS IN DAMAGE AND SWERVED INTO ANOTHER PARKED CAR DOING DAMAGE TO IT ALSO. THE VENZA HAD DAMAGE OF MORE THAN SIX THOUSAND DOLLARS. THE CAR HAS BEEN REPAIRED BUT I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE IT SO IT HAS BEEN SITTING IN THE CARPORT SINCE THE DAY THE REPAIRS WERE FINISH. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 TOYOTA VENZA. THE CONTACT WAS INVOLVED IN A CRASH BECAUSE THE VEHICLE LUNGED FORWARD. THE CONTACT WAS ATTEMPTING TO PARK THE VEHICLE WHEN IT SUDDENLY ACCELERATED CAUSING THE CONTACT TO CRASH INTO A HANDICAP SIGN. THE DEALER INSPECTED AND TEST DROVE THE VEHICLE AND STATED THAT NOTHING WAS WRONG WITH IT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FAILURE ONLY HAPPENED AT SLOW SPEEDS, BUT THE DEALER DID NOT TEST THE VEHICLE TO CONFIRM THAT. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 2400.

Hello, I issue this complaint because my 2009 Venza interior started smelling like smoke. It went on for a bit thinking it may be something outside the vehicle. I then realized the smell was coming from the seat I was sitting on. I've read online about this problem and its seems this is a problem many owners of this vehicle have experienced. THE SEAT HEATERS IN THE VEHICLE DON'T WORK LIKE THEY SHOULD. SOMETIMES THERE IS A BURNING SMELL TO THEM. THE DRIVERS SIDE ONE WENT OUT COMPLETELY ABOUT 2 YEARS AGO AND WE HAD IT FIXED NOW THE PASSENGER ONE ISN'T WORKING AT ALL. THE DRIVERS SIDE SEAT HEATER GETS PRETTY HOT TOO AND HAS TO BE SHUT OFF.

MY FRONT SEAT HEATING SYSTEM HAS NOT BEEN WORKING SINCE LAST YEAR. I DIDN'T REALIZE THAT THERE IS A RECALL ON TOYOTA VENZA 2009 FOR FRONT SEAT HEATING ISSUES UNTIL NOW. I HAVE NEVER TAKEN IT TO ANY DEALERSHIP TO RECTIFY OR DISCONNECT THE HEATING ELEMENTS. I BELIEVE THIS MIGHT STILL BE A SAFETY ISSUE TO MY VEHICLE. WHAT STEPS SHOULD I TAKE?

VEHICLE IS 9 YEARS OLD, BUT WITH ONLY 56,135 MILES AND VERY WELL MAINTAINED. DRIVEN BY A SMALL FEMALE, WHICH IS RELEVANT. EXPERIENCED AN ACRID, BURNING SMELL WHICH CAUSED GAGGING AND COUGHING. NO SMOKE VISIBLE. DEALER FOUND PROBLEMS WITH HEATED SEATS, WIRING AND CONNECTORS. ENTIRE HEATED SEAT SYSTEM NEEDS REPLACED AT COST OF $1130.30 FOR EACH SEAT. MANY COMPLAINTS OF THIS ISSUE ONLINE. THERE IS NO WAY THAT A SMALL FRAMED FEMALE'S WEIGHT CAUSED DAMAGE TO THE WIRING WITHIN THE SEAT HEATERS. THIS IS OBVIOUSLY A MANUFACTURING DEFECT AND SHOULD BE COVERED BY TOYOTA REGARDLESS OF THE MILEAGE, DUE TO THIS BEING A SAFETY HAZARD. COULD EASILY CAUSE A CATASTROPHIC FIRE.

HEATED SEAT TEMPERATURE CONTROLLER (#875010T010) FAILS RESULTING IN HEATED SEAT FAILURE. IN OUR CASE, THE CONTROLLER FAILED MELTING THE WIRE HARNESS PLUG TO THE CONTROLLER. THIS COULD HAVE STARTED THE SEAT ON FIRE WITH OUR 17 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER DRIVING THE VEHICLE. TOYOTA HAS DISCONTINUED THIS PART FOR 2009-2014 VENZA'S AND HAS NOT OFFERED A REPLACEMENT.

MY 2009 TOYOTA VENZA WITH ONLY 70,000 MILES SUDDENLY DEVELOPED A WHINING, GRINDING NOISE WHILE DRIVING AND ACCELERATING. THE NOISE WAS COMING FROM THE REAR AXLE. THE NOISE GOT PROGRESSIVELY WORSE VERY QUICKLY. AFTER MECHANICAL INSPECTION I WAS INFORMED THAT THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL WAS SHOT. I WAS ALSO INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE SHOULDN'T BE DRIVEN FOR LONG DISTANCES BECAUSE OF THE POTENTIAL OF THE DIFFERENTIAL TO OVERHEAT AND FAIL.THE FAILURE COULD BE ASSOCIATED WITH SAFE DRIVABILITY ISSUES.

THIS IS 2009 TOYOTA VENZA V6 AWD VERSION. OIL LEAKED FROM REAR DIFFERENTIAL BETWEEN ELECTROMAGNETIC COUPLER SUB-ASSEMBLY AND THE DIFFERENTIAL. THE COUPLER ITSELF ALSO LEAKED OIL. THE UNIT IS ALL COVERED BY OIL. DEALER STATING THE PART IS NON-SERVICEABLE AND HAS TO BE REPLACED.

THE FIRST TIME IT HAPPENED I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY ALONE AND I WAS GOING AROUND 60MPH IN THE 3RD LANE WHEN THE VENZA SAID "D" ON THE DISPLAY BUT THEN IT FELT LIKE IT SHIFTED INTO 2ND GEAR BECAUSE IT WENT FROM 60MPH TO AROUND 20MPH WITH NO WARNING AND I HAD TO GET IT INTO THE EMERGENCY LANE IN THE CENTER SO I WOULDN'T GET HIT AFTER THAT I TOOK IT TO RIGHT OVER TO GREENWICH TOYOTA AND THEY LOOKED AT IT BUT FOUND NO TROUBLE CODES AND ABOUT A WEEK LATER I WAS WITH MY WIFE [XXX] AND I WAS GOING DOWN E PUTNAM AVE AND IT HAPPENED WITH HER IN THE CAR AND THIS TIME IT WENT FROM AROUND 40MPH IN "D" TO AROUND 10MPH AND IT SCARED HER AND SHE JUST ASKED TO BE TAKEN HOME SO THE NEXT DAY I TOOK IT TO TOYOTA AND LEFT IT FOR ABOUT A WEEK AND STILL NO TROUBLE CODES WERE FOUND AND IT'S HAPPENED A FEW MORE TIMES SINCE THEN WITH STILL NO TROUBLE CODES NOW I ONLY USE IT IN SPORT MODE WHERE I MANUALLY SHIFT IT. WHEN THE DRIVERS VISOR WAS PUSHED UP OUT OF THE WAY SOMETHING SNAPPED AND THE VISOR WOULD NOT STAY UP. IT WOULD ONLY HANG DOWN OBSTRUCTING MY LINE OF VISION. I ENDED UP DRIVING FROM UTAH TO AZ HOLDING THE VISOR UP SO I COULD SEE. I SPENT OVER $125 TO INSTALL IT MYSELF. TWO YEARS LATER THE SAME EXACT THING HAS HAPPENED TO THE PASSENGERS VISOR MAKING IT NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO SEE TRAFFIC COMING FROM MY RIGHT. I CALLED POWER TOYOTA TO GET THE PART AND WAS INFORMED THE FOLLOWING DAY IT IS ON A NATIONAL BACK ORDER WITH NO RELEASE DATE. WHEN I CONTACTED TOYOTA REGARDING THIS SAFETY ISSUE I WAS INFORMED THAT VISORS ARE ONLY COVERED FOR 3 YEARS AND OFFERED NO SUGGESTIONS OR REASONS AS TO WHY THE VISORS ARE UNAVAILABLE. I HOPE MY UPCOMING TRIP TO TUCSON IS NOT NEGATIVELY AFFECTED BY TOYOTA'S FAULTY VISORS.

DRIVER'S SIDE SUN VISOR WILL NOT STAY IN THE UP POSITION, OR IN THE VISOR POSITION, BUT DROPS INTO AN UNSAFE, VISIBILITY HAMPERING AND DISTRACTING LOCATION. TOUCHING/FEELING THE PLASTIC ASSEMBLY WHERE THE VISOR CONNECTS TO THE SUPPORT BAR REVEALS THAT THE ASSEMBLY HAS FAILED. I FIND IT INTERESTING THAT TOYOTA HAS ISSUED AN ADVISORY AND WILL PAY FOR THIS REPAIR FOR CAMRY'S BUT NOT VENZA'S. I HAVE A 2010 CAMRY THAT I PURCHASED ON THE SAME DAY AS THE VENZA: JULY 31, 2009 AND IT'S DRIVER'S SIDE VISOR FAILED ON JULY 31, 215 JUST ONE DAY AFTER THE VENZA'S (BUT WITH TWICE THE MILEAGE)! HOPING THAT NHTSA CAN CONVINCE TOYOTA TO FIX THE MUCH SMALLER QUANTITY (COMPARED TO CAMRY) OF VENZA'S AS WELL. I WOULD REPLACE IT MYSELF IF THE PART WASN'T SO TERRIBLY OVERPRICED ($179 !!!). I WILL BE SEEKING GOODWILL FROM THE DEALER I PURCHASED FROM, BUT FROM TRAFFIC ON THE INTERNET, I SEE THIS IS A PERVASIVE PROBLEM FOR WHICH TOYOTA IS NOT TAKING THE CORRECT ACTION

IN MARCH 2014, MY PASSENGER SUN VISOR STARTED FAILING BY MAKING A CLICKING SOUND WHEN LOWERING. BY APRIL, THE VISOR WOULD NOT GO BACK UP AND ENDING "HANGING" WHERE YOU WERE UNABLE TO SEE UNLESS YOU HELD IT. IN MAY 2014, THE DRIVER'S SIDE SUN VISOR FAILED AS WELL. I NOW HAVE BOTH VISORS STOWED IN MY GLOVE BOX BECAUSE WHEN I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP, THEY SAID TO HANG ON TO THEM IN CASE OF A RECALL. THEY SAID PART AND LABOR TO FIX WOULD BE ABOUT 200.00 FOR ONE. My 2009 Venza requires an entire roof seal replacement to stop leaking from all sides of the roof. I was quoted $1k. There should be a recall or some portion of this cost covered by Toyota.

SUN VISORS HAVE CAME LOOSE CAUSING THE VISOR TO JUST HANG DOWN CAUSING TEARING IN THE COVERING MATERIAL AND POOR VISIBILITY. IT CANNOT BE PUT BACK UP IN PLACE. THE INTERNAL MECHANISM IS FROZEN UP OR SOMETHING.

ON 4/21/2018, I WAS DRIVING AT 75 MPH DOWN A MOUNTAIN FREEWAY IN ARIZONA FROM 5600 ELEVATION TO 2300 FT WHEN MY SUNROOF BLEW A HOLE OUT FROM THE CENTER OF THE MIDDLE LANE OF GLASS. THE WHOLE PANE CRACKED AND BEGAN TO DISINTEGRATE. THANKFULLY THE SUNROOF AND PROTECTIVE COVER WERE CLOSED. AT FIRST I THOUGHT A ROCK HAD SOMEHOW CAUSED THE BREAK UNTIL THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER POINTED OUT THAT THE EDGES OF THE GLASS WERE PUSHING UPWARD INDICATING THE GLASS BLEW UPWARDS FROM THE CABIN. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED. THE FIRST TIME WAS ON A CITY STREET AT 40 MPH IN COLORADO AT 6000 FT ELEVATION. TOYOTA NO LONGER MAKES THE VENZA. THE GLASS ON THE SUNROOF SHOULD BE MADE WITH A PROTECTIVE COATING TO KEEP IT FROM COMING APART IN A THOUSAND PIECES.

MY SUN VISOR ON THE DRIVER SIDE WOULD NOT STAY IN PLACE AND WHEN I APPLIED A LITTLE PRESSURE THE VISOR BROKE AROUND THE HOLE WHERE IT CONNECTS TO THE ROOF PIECE. I WAS DRIVING. THEN IT WOULD HANG IN MY FACE AND I COULD NOT SEE WELL. AT STOP SIGNS I WAS TRYING TO REMOVE IT BUT THE FABRIC AROUND IT PREVENTED THAT. I WAS FINALLY ABLE TO REMOVE IT AND CURRENTLY HAVE NO VISOR ON THE DRIVER SIDE NOW.

While driving, the computer seemed to short out, going blank on the cars display, and all guages failed. The car kpet driving, but I lost power steering and brakes. It was difficult to control the car while getting to the side of the road. Once there, I turned the car off to see if things would reset. It would not. The car would not recognize that I had my foot on the brake to start the car. I eventually needed a tow, which was a stupid problem to have. the car was driveable, should be driveable, its the computer telling the car theres a problem when there isnt one. Once at the car shop the car started fine but failed to start again the next day. Now its not doing that behavior and the shop cant figure out whats going wrong. There are no codes to diagnose. What a stupid problem to have, a completely drivable vehicle, but a glitchy computer making the car unreliable. I am stunned that a modern car wont allow you to drive to a car shop, it would not start...the shop was 1.5 miles away but yet I had to pay for a tow. There have been NO other problems, so is it a ground, a short, a faulty display? theres no way to diagnose this or at least the shop is having a very difficult time with it. Are there other owners that have had this issue?

THIS IS THE THIRD OCCURRENCE IN A YEAR. THE VEHICLE WILL RANDOMLY TURN ON AND ATTEMPT TO START. THERE IS NO FUEL GOING TO THE ENGINE, SO IT DOES NOT IGNITE, BUT I HAVE READ REPORTS IF VENZAS DOING THIS AND CATCHING FIRE. THE OTHER CHALLENGE IS THAT WHEN THIS HAPPENS, IT ALSO ACTIVATES THE ENGINE IMMOBILIZER AND WILL NOT RECOGNIZE THE KEYS. THE FIRST TIME, LAST JANUARY, WE RETURNED FROM A TRIP TO FIND A DEAD BATTERY. AFTER REPLACING THE BATTERY, THE ENGINE WAS LOCKED. I EVENTUALLY WAS ABLE TO GET IT STARTED, THEN LEFT BOTH KEYS IN THE VEHICLE INBTHE ACC ON POSITION FOR 30 MINUTES, AND IT RECOGNIZED THE KEY. IN OCTOBER, I WAS OUT RUNNING AND RETURNED TO FIND THE HEADLIGHTS ON AND THE FAN BLOWER RUNNING. I DISCONNECTED THE BATTERY, BECAUSE IT WOULD NOT RECOGNIZE THE KEYS. I RECONNECTED IT LATER WITH NO CHANGE, BIT THEN A FEW HOURS LATER IT WORKED FINE. TODAY, DECEMBER 1, 2019), WE RETURNED HOME FROM CHURCH TO FIND THE STARTER CLICKING. THE ENGINE IMMOBILIZER IS ACTIVATED. THE VEHICLE WAS LOCKED AND UNTAMPERED. IF THE BATTERY DOES NOT DOE, THIS COULD START A FIRE AND BURN DOWN MY HOUSE. I AM TAKING IT TO A DEALER, BUT THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD. IT OCCURS WHILE PARKED, RANDOMLY. THOUGH IT SEEMS COLD WEATHER IS A FACTOR.

ON JULY 4, 2016, OUR TOYOTA VENZA, WHILE PARKED IN FRONT OF 210 SW 29TH AVENUE, ATTEMPTED TO START ITSELF WITH NO ONE IN THE CAR. THE SOLENOID MECHANISM CONNECTED THE BATTERY TO THE STARTER ON ITS OWN. THE COG OF THE STARTER WAS TRYING TO SPIN THE FLYWHEEL. THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT FILLED WITH ELECTRICAL SMOKE. OUR NEIGHBORS ACROSS THE STREET WERE WALKING THEIR DOG AND HEARD THE CAR NOISES. THEY CAME TO OUR YARD AND TOLD MY WIFE WHAT WAS GOING ON. SHE GOT THE CAR KEYS AND OPENED UP THE LOCKED CAR. SHE POPPED THE HOOD OPEN. THE NEIGHBOR GOT THE POSITIVE CABLE OFF THE BATTERY. AT THE POINT THE STARTER STOPPED TRYING TO SPIN. WE CONTACTED OUR INSURANCE COMPANY, AMICA. THE ADJUSTER SAID WE COULD HAVE THE CAR TOWED. WE HAD A FLATBED WRECKER TOW IT TO ED MORSE TOYOTA IN DELRAY BEACH, FL. WHILE RESEARCHING THE INTERNET I FOUND THAT TOYOTA ISSUED A RECALL FOR STARTER MECHANISMS FOR SEVERAL MODELS FOR YEARS 2009 THROUGH 2011. HOWEVER, THE VENZA WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THAT RECALL. IT IS MY THOUGHT THAT A BAD BATCH OF STARTER/SOLENOIDS WERE MADE AND DISTRIBUTED TO VARIOUS TOYOTA MODELS IN 2009 THROUGH 2011. I BELIEVE THAT OUR CAR RECEIVED ONE OF THEM. 1) Brakes consistently 'softer' than normal. Sometimes require pumping the pedal to stop at all. Can be difficult to start car, brake pedal may not move at all to get starter button to light up. **Every time after sitting over night, when the car starts the pedal 'mushes' to the floor. It must be pumped to get any resistance. 2) Lack of reliable brakes poses real safety risk for everyone. I just had incident where I had difficulty stopping, nearly in accident. 3) One mechanic experienced lack of brakes when driving it, had to pump pedal to stop. 4) Multiple independent auto repair shops as well as local Toyota Dealer service have charged me thousands to repair, without success. 5) 6/27/23 warning light, 'check ABS', sensor unplugged by mechanic. Once master cylinder replaced, sensor reconnected. 6) I just called Toyota Corporate, was told they couldn't help, I'd have to pay to have it looked at again.

The contact stated that after starting the vehicle and opening and closing the front driver’s side door, the SRS warning light illuminated and remained illuminated. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The vehicle was previously inspected under NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V257000 (Air Bags) and no failure was found. The contact stated that the vehicle had recently experienced the failure listed in the recall. The manufacturer and local dealer were notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was 92,000.

THE DRIVER'S SIDE SEAT HEATER IN THE LEATHER SEAT WORKED FINE UNTIL A COUPLE OF MONTHS AGO, APPROXIMATELY 80,000 MILES. NOW WHEN IT IS TURNED TO THE ON POSITION THERE IS A SMELL OF BURNING ELECTRICAL WIRING. SEAT HEATER WAS TURNED OFF, THEN ON AGAIN A COUPLE OF TIMES TO TEST IT. THIS HAPPENS WHETHER THE CAR IS STATIONERY OR ON THE ROAD, JUST ANY TIME THE SEAT HEATER IS TURNED ON. NOW THE SEAT HEATER IS OFF AND WILL NOT BE TURNED ON BECAUSE OF THE FEAR OF AN ELECTRICAL FIRE. THIS VIN NUMBER IS NOT UNDER THE CURRENT SEAT HEATER RECALLS. IT APPEARS FROM THE OTHER COMPLAINTS, THERE ARE MANY OTHER CARS OF THIS MAKE WITH THE SAME PROBLEM AND NOT UNDER THE CURRENT RECALLS. WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY I NOTICED A "RUBBER BURNING" SMELL. I TOOK THE VEHICLE INTO THE DEALERSHIP THE NEXT DAY. I WAS TOLD THAT THE ECU RELATED TO MY DRIVER SEAT WARMER HAD STARTED TO MELT. THE CAR WAS RUNNING FOR LESS THAN TWO MINUTES WHEN I STOPPED TO MAKE A TURN FROM LORAIN AVENUE, SILVER SPRING MD, ONTO WESTBOUND MD 193 UNIVERSITY BLVD. I ACCELERATED TO ENTER TRAFFIC AND THE CAR TOOK OVER AND ACCELERATED TO FULL THROTTLE ON ITS OWN. THE SAME BEHAVIOR AS IF GOING INTO CRUISE CONTROL "RESUME" MODE AFTER BEING IN "COAST" EXCEPT THAT THE CRUISE CONTROL WAS NOT ENGAGED. I APPLIED THE BRAKES FIRMLY BUT THEY DID NOT SUFFICIENTLY SLOW THE CAR NOR DID THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL RETURN TO IDLE POSITION. I WAS ABLE TO SHIFT INTO NEUTRAL AND GUIDE THE CAR TO A SAFE STOP. THE ENGINE CONTINUED TO RUN AT FULL THROTTLE AND THE TACHOMETER WAS WELL INTO THE RED ZONE, ABOVE 6800 RPM. THE ENGINE STOP BUTTON DID NOT STOP THE MOTOR WHEN PRESSED PER NORMAL OPERATION. ONLY WHEN I PRESSED AND HELD THE ENGINE STOP BUTTON DOWN DID THE MOTOR STOP. I PLACE THE TRANSMISSION INTO PARK AND APPLIED THE FOOT BRAKE. I SHUT THE CAR DOWN AND LEFT IT (WITH MY CHILDREN, AGES 2 AND 6, WHO HAD BEEN THEIR SECOND ROW CAR SEATS AND WERE NOW IN TEARS). AFTER ABOUT AN HOUR I RETURNED TO THE CAR BY MYSELF AND STARTED IT AGAIN. THIS TIME IT STARTED NORMALLY AND IDLED AT ABOUT 800 RPM. I DROVE THE CAR TO MY HOME TWO BLOCKS AWAY AND PARKED IT. The contact stated that while driving approximately 65 MPH the vehicle suddenly hydroplaned causing the driver to loose control of the steering and the vehicle crashed into a concrete median. The contact stated that during the crash the frontend of the vehicle was damaged but no air bags deployed. No injuries were reported. Police were called to the scene but no report was taken. The vehicle was later driven home. The cause of the failure was not determined. The manufacturer was not contacted. The contact indicated that prior to the crash the maintenance light had remained illuminated. The failure mileage was 72,800.

Dear NHTSA, I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to bring to your attention a matter of significant concern regarding water leakage in my vehicle, which I believe has the potential to compromise the safety and functionality of the car's electronic systems. I would like to submit this report to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to ensure that appropriate measures are taken to address and rectify this issue promptly. During the rainy season, I have observed water leaks occurring on both sides of the front section of my vehicle. This water infiltration has raised serious concerns about the possibility of damage to the car's computer system, thereby posing a potential risk of car malfunction. I AM UNAWARE IF THE SYSTEMS THEMSELVES STOP WORKING UPON THE INDICATORS ACTIVATION OR NOT. I BELIEVE THAT THIS WARRANTS MORE INVESTIGATION AND POSSIBLY A SAFETY RECALL AS ABS AND ESC ARE SAFETY FEATURES AND BRAKES ARE (FROM MY CIVILIAN PERSPECTIVE) A NECESSARY FUNCTION FOR THE VEHICLES SAFE OPERATION.

THE CAR WAS STOPPED WITH THE PARKING BRAKE PUSHED ALL THE WAY IN AND I TRIED TO LOOSE HIM OFF THE SEAT-BELT BUT I COULD NOT BECAUSE THE SEAT BELT GOT AROUND MY CHILD BELLY AND WAS DEPRIVING HIM OF AIR TO BREATHE. WITH NO SUCCESS AND MY SON DESPERATELY CRYING FOR HELP I HAD TO CUT THE BACK SEAT-BELT. AFTER I WAS STOPPED FOR ABOUT 30 SECONDS, THE VSC/TRAC LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN AND THE CAR WAS STUCK (WOULD NOT MOVE FORWARD). I TRIED TAPPING BREAKS TO RELEASE, BUT ULTIMATELY HAD TO PUT THE CAR IN PARK, TURN OFF THE CAR AND START OVER AGAIN. IN BOTH INSTANCES, I DID NOT HAVE MY FOOT HEAVILY ON THE BRAKE. IN THE FIRST INSTANCE, I WAS ON A LESS THAN 1% DECLINE AND THE 2ND INSTANCE WAS ON A FLAT ROAD - AND THE ROADS WERE DRY. I TRIED TO REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM AT HOME, BUT FOUND THE ONLY WAY I COULD GET THE VSC LIGHT TO COME ON WAS BY HEAVILY APPLYING THE BRAKE. IN BOTH INSTANCES DESCRIBED, I HAD NOT APPLIED THE BRAKE HEAVILY AT ALL.

I OWN A 2009 TOYOTA VENZA. RECENTLY BY ROTATING THE WHEELS, I NOTICED THE NUTS WERE LOOSEN. SO WHEN TAKING THE WHEELS OUT, I NOTICED THAT THE DISC BRAKES WERE NOT TIGHTEN TO THE LUGS AND COULD ROLL BACK AND FORTH BY THE LITTLE BIT OF THE SPACE BETWEEN THE LUGS AND THE LUGS' HOLES. THEY WOULD BE TIGHTEN WHEN THE WHEELS WERE ON AND TIGHTEN WITH THE WHEELS' NUTS. I USE MY EDUCATED GUESS TO GUESS THAT WHEN I BRAKE THE CAR, THE DISC BRAKES WILL HAVE A CHANCE TO ROLL IN REVERSE DIRECTION OF THE WHEELS IN THAT LITTLE BIT OF THE SPACE. WHEN I BACK UP THE CAR, THEN BRAKE, AGAIN, THE DISC BRAKES WILL ROLL THE OTHER DIRECTION. THIS ACTION WILL RESULT IN LOOSING THE WHEELS' NUTS AFTER A SHORT WHILE. WE HAVE OTHER CARS FROM OTHER MANUFACTURES, AND WE FOUND THAT THEY DON'T DESIGN THE SAME WAY, WHICH THE DISC BRAKES ARE TIGHTEN TO THE LUGS ALONE. I WROTE THIS SAME EMAIL TO TOYOTA, BUT I DON'T THINK THEY WILL ANSWER ME. I THINK THIS IS ANOTHER SAFETY ISSUE. IF OWNERS WHO DON'T PAY ATTENTION TO RETIGHTEN THE WHEELS AFTER 5000-7000 MILES, THEY WILL FACE A CHANCE OF LOOSING A WHEEL ON THE FREEWAY. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 TOYOTA VENZA. HE STATED THAT WHILE HE WAS DRIVING IN REVERSE WITH HIS FOOT ON THE BRAKE PEDAL, THE VEHICLE UNEXPECTEDLY ACCELERATED AND HIT A TREE. THE ENGINE WAS STILL ON; HOWEVER, HE TURNED THE VEHICLE OFF AND PUSHED IT INTO THE GARAGE FOR FEAR THAT THE FAILURE WOULD REOCCUR. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED A LARGE LACERATION TO HIS HEAD. HE WAS REQUIRED TO GET STAPLES FOR HIS HEAD INJURY. THE AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. THE DEALER DID NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE; YET, THEY ADVISED THE CONTACT TO NOTIFY THE MANUFACTURER. FIRST HIGHWAY TRIP WITH A BRAND NEW 2009 TOYOTA VENZA AUTOMATIC 4 CYLINDER AWD. MAINTAINED SPEED LIMIT 100 KILOS/HR. WENT TO PASS A SEMI AND GAS PEDAL STUCK AT 120 KILOMETERS ON NARROW TWO WAY HIGHWAY WITH SOFT SHOULDERS POST MAJOR SNOW FALL LAST FRIDAY(NORMALLY NOT SPEED). WAS UNABLE TO DEPRESS THE GAS PEDAL AND APPLY FULL PRESSURE ON BRAKES.THE VEHICLE DID NOT SLOW DOWN ENGINE WAS STILL RACING. FINALLY WAS ABLE TO PUT TRANSMISSION INTO NEUTRAL, STILL WITH FULL BRAKES BARELY WORKING WITH RACING ENGINE . ENGINE SMELLS BEGAN, ABLE TO WRESTLE CAR TO GRAVEL SHOULDER,THROW INTO PARK AND IMMEDIATELY KILLED ENGINE. ONCE SEMI CALMED DOWN, TRIED TO INSPECT GAS PEDAL. YANKED OUT TOYOTA MANUFACTURED INSTALLED RUBBER MAT WHICH HAD BEEN IMPROPERLY INSTALLED ON TOP OF EXISTING FACTORY CARPET MATT WHICH WAS CLIPPED IN PLACE. READ ABOUT THIS BEING IMPROPER - IN CAR MANUAL WHILE WAITING TO HEAR BACK FROM DEALERSHIP FOR SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS GIVEN SYSTEM WARNING THAT MAJOR BRAKE FAILURE MAY HAVE ALSO OCCURRED. CAREFULLY DID SOME CHECKS OF BRAKES. HARD PRESSURE ON PEDAL RESULTED IN TRACTION SIGNAL REAPPEARING. SOFT PRESSURE THERE WAS NO TRACTION SIGN. VERY CAUTIOUSLY AND SLOWLY 90 - 95 KILOMETERS/HR. CONTINUED HOME ON LAST LEG OF TRIP WITH NO PASSING. ONCE HOME, RE-INSPECTED GAS PEDAL AREA AND NOTED A CORRESPONDING LINE INDENT TO WHERE RUBBER MATT MAY HAVE DUG INTO CARPET ON RIGHT SIDE OF GAS PEDAL. THOUGH NOT A MECHANIC, DEDUCTIVELY, RUBBER MAT IMPROPER INSTALL MAY LIKELY HAVE CAUSED GAS PEDAL STICK. RUBBER MAT CLEARLY WARNED NOT TO INSTALL ON TOP OF CARPET MAT ! WHY DEALER DID. NO IDEA! WHY BRAKING SYSTEM NOT WORK WHILE ENGINE RACED IN DRIVE... I HAVE NO IDEA.! FEEL VERY VERY VERY LUCKY TO BE ALIVE!
