TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1995 CHEVROLET CAMARO. WHILE DRIVING 15 MPH, THE BRAKES FAILED AND THE VEHICLE CRASHED INTO THE REAR OF ANOTHER VEHICLE. THE BUMPERS ON BOTH VEHICLES WERE SCRATCHED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHEN THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED, THE PEDAL WOULD DROP 3 INCHES AND THEN RE-ENGAGE AFTER 2 SECONDS. THE ABS WARNING INDICATOR LIGHT ILLUMINATED AFTER THE PEDAL RETURNED. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN INSPECTED BY A DEALER. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 180,000.

MY 16-YEAR OLD SON WAS INVOLVED IN A FENDER-BENDER. BOTH THE DRIVERS AND PASSENGER AIR BAGS DEPLOYED, DESTROYING THE DASH AND WINDSHIELD OF HIS 1995 CHEVY CAMARO. THERE WAS NO DAMAGE TO THE FRONT OF HIS CAR FROM THE CRASH, EXCEPT FOR A BROKEN FOG LIGHT, AS HE WAS TRAVELING AT APPROX 5-8 MPH. THE AIR BAG RIPPED THE DASH FROM THE FIREWALL, BURNED HIS ARM AND SCRATHCED HIS FACE AND ARMS. I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT IN THIS LOW SPEED THIS MUCH DAMAGE SHOULD HAVE RESULTED FROM THIS TYPE OF INCIDENT. WHEN I SPOKE TO PRODUCT ALLEGATIONS GROUP WITH GM, THEY AGREED WITH ME THAT THIS TYPE OF AIR BAG WAS DESIGNED FOR"MODERATE-TO-SEVERE CRASHES", NOT A LOW-SPEED INCIDENT. BUT UPON LOOKING AT PICTURES SUPPLIED BY THE LOCAL CHEVY DEALER, GM IS NOW TELLING ME THAT THE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED BASED ON THE SOUND WAVES COMING FROM THE STEREO SYSTEM. WHAT A LOAD OF BUNK! IF THAT IS THE CASE, AIR-BAGS SHOULD BE GOING OFF ALL OVER THE PLACE. AND IF THAT WERE TRUE, ISN'T THAT ALSO A DESIGN FLAW? PLEASE CONTACT ME AS SOON AS POSSIBLE....I BELIEVE THAT GM SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR REPLACING MY SON'S DESTROYED DASH AND WINDSHIELD, BASED ON THE FACT THAT THE AIR-BAGS WERE DEFECTIVE AND SHOULD NOT HAVE DEPLOYED UNDER THESE CIRCUMSTANCES. DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE TRAVELING 30 MPH, FLAMES ERUPTED FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. THE VEHICLE PULLED OVER AND NO INJURIES WERE SUSTAINED. THE ENGINE AND FRONT OF THE VEHICLE WERE COMPLETELY ENGULFED IN FLAMES BY THE TIME THE FIRE DEPARTMENT ARRIVED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE CONTACT'S RESIDENCE. THE SERVICE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER WERE NOTIFIED. AN INSPECTOR FROM THE MANUFACTURER WAS SENT TO INSPECT THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE. THE CONTACT SUSPECTED A MELTED SECTION OF THE PLASTIC FUEL LINE MELTED AND LEAKED FUEL ONTO THE HOT ENGINE CAUSING THE FIRE.

DISCOVERED GAS TANK LEAK WHILE CAR PARKED IN ALBANY, NY. PROCEEDED TO DE PAULA CHEVROLET, 785 CENTRAL AVENUE, ALBANY, NY 12206, TEL: 518-489-0122. THE FUEL TANK IS PROTECTED BY A METAL "SHROUD". THE GAS WAS LEAKING ONTO THE EXHAUST PIPE. BOTH SHROUD AND FUEL TANK WERE IN PERFECT CONDITION. THE HOLE IN THE GAS TANK WAS DIRECTLY UNDER THE SHROUD, NEAR THE CENTER OF THE TANK - THUS NO OUTSIDE OBJECT COULD HAVE POSSIBLY CAUSED THE DAMAGE. THE DEALER LISTED THE PROBLEM AS RUST - AS THAT WAS THE ONLY EXPLANATION THEY COULD OFFER. AN EXAMINATION OF THE TANK SHOWED NO RUST. THIS CAR HAS NOT SEEN A WINTER AS IT IS GARAGED DUING THE WINTER MONTHS. THE DEALER. DE PAULA SHOULD STILL HAVE THE TANK, AS I REQUESTED IT BE HELD. GM CUSTOMER SERVICE WAS POLITE, HOWEVER THEIR INTEREST WAS IN THE FACT THAT THE CAR IS OUT OF WARRANTY AND THE EXPENSE IS MINE. I DO CARE ABOUT THE $900 IT COST TO FIX BUT I STRESSED TO THEM HOW UPSET I WAS WITH THE FACT THAT THIS CAR WAS CLOSE TO EXPLODING. ADDITIONALLY FUEL TANKS DO NOT WEAR OUT IN 6 YEARS. IT IS VERY UNREASOABLE THAT A DRIVESHAFT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED AT 26,000 MILES, OR THAT REAL AXELS ARE REPLACED THEN THEY LEAK AGAIN AND HAVE TO BE REPLACED AGAIN. I WAS TOLD TO DRIVE VEHICLE INTO DEALERSHIP WHEN IT WOULDN'T STOP AND WAS UNDER WARRANTEE. I MYSELF SCHEDULED A TOW, IT COULD HAVE KILLED SOMEONE THEY DIDN';T EVEN CARE. I CALLED GMC, AND THEY DON'T CARE EITHER. I HAVE A LEMON THAT I AM AFFRAID OFF. I ALSO DID NOT GET THE KEYLESS ENTRY THAT CAME WITH THIS VECHICLE. THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME I REALLY DIDN'T WANT IT ANYWAY. IT WAS TROUBLE BUT I PAID FOR IT. I NEVER GOT THE STICKER FROM THE WINDOW EITHER. I PAID 21,000 FOR THIS JUNK HEAP THAT IS A DANGER TO THE ROAD. I THEN GOT MY CAR BACK AFTER 3 MONTHS IN THE SHOP AND I HAD JUST ENOUGH TIME TO DRIVE ACCROSS AND PLACE IT IN STORAGE FOR 4 YEARS. YOU SEE I AM IN THE AIR FORCE AND WAS ASSIGNED A 4 YEAR TOUR TO JAPAN AND I JUST RETURNED THAT IS WHY THIS INCIDENT WAS SOO LONG BEING REPORTED AND ALSO THE FACT THAT IT TOOK ME A YEAR TO FIGURE OUT THIS IS WAS HAPPENED. WATER PUMP IS LOCATED ABOVE THE DISTRIBUTOR. WHEN THE SEALS ON THE WATER PUMP FAIL, WATER LEAKS INTO THE DISTRIBUTOR. THIS CAUSES THE ENGINE COOLING SYSTEM NOT TO PERFORM AS IT SHOULD (CAUSES ENGINE MIS- FIRE AND OVER HEATING). I HAVE HAD THE DISTRIBUTOR AND WATER PUMP REPLACED AT 52,000 MILES AND AT 64,000 MILES. NOW AT 84,000 MILES I AM EXPERIENCING THE SAME PROBLEM. ALSO EXPERIENCEING RECURRENT PROBLEMS WITH THE HYDROLIC SYSTEM (BRAKES).

I WAS HEADING NORTH ON THE HIGHWAY AND I CHANGED LANES FROM THE LEFT TO THE RIGHT LANE.
