How to read a Chevrolet Camaro VIN — every digit explained
Every Chevrolet Camaro carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.
- WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
- VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
- Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
- Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
- Plant (11) — which factory assembled this Camaro.
- Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.
Model-year code (10th digit)
The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:
Where to find your Camaro VIN
- Dashboard — driver's side, visible through the windshield from outside.
- Driver's door jamb — on the manufacturer sticker when you open the door.
- Paperwork — vehicle registration, title and insurance card.
- Engine bay & frame — stamped on the firewall or chassis on many models.

As a result, the o-ring may not seat correctly on the fuel line.
Risk. This condition may cause an inadequate seal at the connection, potentially leading to a fuel leak. In the presence of an ignition source, a fire could occur.
Fix. Honeywell will notify owners and replace the fuel filters free of charge. The recall began on october 18, 2006. Owners may contact fram customer service at 1-800-890-2075 (option 1).
Equipment
What's wrong. Certain honeywell fram racing brand hp4 and hp8 oil filters that were manufactured from may 25, 2006, through september 14, 2007, and sold for use as replacement equipment for vehicles list above. The affected filters are marked with a date code a61451 through a72571 sequentially. The date code and part number appear on the filter housing. Fram racing hp4 and hp8 oil filters not bearing a date code in this range are not affected by this recall. The gasket of the oil filter becomes more pliable under high temperatures and pressures.
Risk. This condition may cause inadequate sealing and loss of engine oil, possibly resulting in a fire.
Fix. Honeywell will replace the affected oil filters free of charge. The recall began during november 2007. Owners can contact fram customer service toll-free at 1-800-890-2075.
Exterior Lighting
What's wrong. Certain pro-a motors corner lamps, turn signals, and headlights sold as replacement lamps for use on certain passenger vehicles listed above. Some combination lamps that are not equipped with amber side reflectors fail to conform to federal motor vehicle safety standard no. 108, lamps, reflective devices, and associated equipment.
Risk. Without the amber reflectors, the vehicle will be poorly illuminated, possibly resulting in a vehicle crash without warning.
Fix. Pro-a motors will notify owners and offer to repurchase the lamps. The recall began on april 3, 2006. Owners may contact pro-a motors at 323-838-2988.
1984 Chevrolet Camaro recalls 7
Seat Belts:front:webbing
What's wrong. Dislocation of a spring cover will not allow the shoulder belt to retract after being extended. Consequence of defect: although inertial feature that locks the lap belt and shoulder belt in the event of an accident are not affected, if slack is more than recommended in owners manual, injuries to upper body and head would be increased in an accident.
Fix. Install retaining springs on spring cover of front shoulder belt retractor and, when required, retractors will be replaced.
Seats:front Assembly:recliner
What's wrong. Some vehicles have bucket seat back locks that do not conform to federal motor vehicle safety standard 207, anchorage of seats. In event of a crash, the seat back lock may not function.
Fix. Inspection of seat back locks will be performed. Locks that have bent, broken or missing hooks will be replaced.
Service Brakes, Hydraulic:foundation Components:hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings
What's wrong. Rear brake hoses were not properly manufactured and do not conform to the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard 106, "brake hoses". Hoses could come loose from the end fittings when subjected to a pulling force.
Fix. A new hose will be installed if necessary. In addition, brakes will be serviced.
Seat Belts:front:buckle Assembly
What's wrong. Plastic components of seat belt buckle assemblies do not contain an ultra violet stabilizer, and exposure to direct sunlight and elevated interior temperatures could weaken the plastic components.
Risk. This could result in breakage of plastic components whichcould prevent buckle from latching and protecting occupant in a sudden stop oraccident.
Fix. Replace or repair seat belt buckle.
Parking Brake:conventional
What's wrong. Parking brake adjuster fails to operate and do not work after brake pad wear.
Risk. Parking brakes will not completely hold a parked vehiclewhen parked on a slope, causing unintended vehicle rollaway which could resultin a vehicle accident.
Fix. Replace nonfunctioning parking brake adjusters.

Fuel System, Gasoline:storage:tank Assembly
What's wrong. Fuel tank ventilator valve in the fuel system may produce a loud and persistent "whistle" during venting of the tank. If the fuel filler cap is removed while this condition exists and the tank is more than 3/4 full, gasoline may be forced out of the filler neck onto bystanders.
Risk. Consequence of defect: fire and personal injury could result if introduced to an ignition source.
Fix. Dealer will inspect and, if necessary, replace the fuel tank ventilator and pressure control valves without charge to owner.
Seat Belts:front:anchorage
What's wrong. The involved vehicles do not conform to federal motor vehicle safety standard no. 210, "seat belt assembly anchorages". The non-compliance exists because the rear seat belt anchorages may pull through the underbody of the vehicle if enough force is applied.
Risk. Consequence of defect: in the event of an accident, personal injury or death may result from a failure of belt to adequately restrain occupants.
Fix. Upon inspection, dealer will install a rear seat belt anchorage reinforcement kit to ensure proper anchoring of seat belts without charge to owner.
Parking Brake:conventional
What's wrong. Parking brake adjuster fails to operate and do not work after brake pad wear.

Seat Belts:front:retractor
What's wrong. On certain vehicles, the seat belt retractors in the rear seating positions contain first lock positions which will not lock when used by smaller passengers. This fails to comply with the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard no. 208, "occupant crash protection".
Fix. All owners will be sent a pre-paid postage card that is to be filled out and sent back. The card will indicate whether the seat belts are functioning properly. If dealer inspects seat belts, the seat belt retractors will be replaced, if necessary, without charge.

On 9/13/2014, my wife drove my 2012 chevy camaro zl11 to her dads, when she left she pulled out of his drive way and stopped at stop sign, she took off in first gear she said when she shifted the car into second gear the car just took off she said it acted like something just took over, like a cruise control, except no matter what she did including hitting the brake the continued to increase in speed, keep in mind this car has a 6 speed standard transmission, meaning she had one foot on throttle and one foot on clutch when this happened unlike automatic where you could have hit gas instead of brake, my wife has never had an accident or a speeding ticket, i believe something happened, with all this being said 17 days later she is in icu with 2 broken bones in her back and a piece of broken bone lodged next to her spine, this needs to be addressed next time it could be a hole family. The car has been considered total loss, but i have not released the car to insurance company at this time. *tr
I own a 2011 camaro ss, i had 2 incidents , both times at a lunch break. Whilie leaving work to go home for lunch , the first incident i went to make a left turn at approx. 15mph . As i began the left turn unknowingly my car shut off power steering locked up and i slammed into curb and ended up on the landscape. The second time the exact thing but at a higher speed aprox. 45mph.at the bottom of the vincent thomas bridge heading west as i approach to bear left to gaffey st my vehicle did the same exact thing, meaning that the engine shutdown and steering wheel locked sending me into a k rail., knocking me unconscious ,the vehicle stopped 150 ft after impact. My vehicle was totaled
I was in an accident with a friend in [XXX] We weren't doing over 30 to 35 miles per hour when we hit a deer. All I could remember was yelling because my wrist was broken and I had bone coming out from the air bags that deployed on my side of the car. The wind shield was cracked because of this as well. My friend had to jump out of the car to disconnect the battery because the car would not shut off or stop moving. The brake and parking brake was used but couldn't get it to stop. My friend had to crawl out the side window by them to let me out of the car because neither door opened to let us out. My friend was hurt as well but not as bad as my wrist. The er doctor told me since my wrist never healed or would ever heal correctly. That iwould have to go see a hand specialist to do surgery and put pins in but wasn't a guarantee fix. Till this day I have trouble working if it requires me to pick up heavy things with that hand because I just feel the pain and how it feels like it wants to come apart. This happened in bandera Texas on [XXX]. I did make a police report and even claimed it on my insurance. I was told the car was totaled due to cost of the air bags being deployed. I have not reported to anyone because people don't think it is a safety issue. So I'm still have debit from this incident that I don't want anyone to have to go through what I have since that day. I was seen at beorne Methodist er in beorne texas. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Tl* the contact owned a 2010 chevrolet camaro. While driving 40 mph, the vehicle completely stalled without warning. The car was making a turn in inclement weather when it lost traction. In every effort to slow the vehicle, my husband (whom was driving) downshifted to third gear, as the car was sliding into a ditch the clutch stuck to the floor (as it has done before on several occasions and has been mentioned to the local dealership), the brakes went out, the e-brake was pulled in an intense effort to slow the vehicle during the loss of control from impacting an electrical pole. When the first impact was made into the ditch, all 4 curtain airbags deployed. After the second full frontal impact into the electrical pole, the driver's side airbag deployed, however, the passenger side airbag did not even though it had an occupant. *tr
I was heading north on the highway and i changed lanes from the left to the right lane. Once i changed lanes my car jerked viciously back to the left i corrected the problem and went back to the right, but the car ran off the road and lost the rear passenger wheel and tire. The tire was still intact with the hub and axle (lug nuts were still connected all of them were tight.) this shouldn't have happened. I believe i wrecked because my rear axle broke. And further more my air bags must have been defective because they did not deploy on impact. They had deployed when the tow trucks brought the car out of the hole. *nm

Prior to the incident (vehicle crash), immediately after the vehicle was purchased (March 2023), it was taken back to the dealership several times due to a slight noise and sensation the wheels and brakes were making. The issue was internment, and the dealership insisted they were unable to replicate the issue. It felt as if the wheels were momentarily locking when slowing down to apply the brakes. We thought it was a brake issue, but the dealership assured us the brakes were ok. Due to the ongoing issue with the interment, we decided to purchase new tires that were the recommended size for the vehicle, rather than the original tires it Recently (on 09/5/2024), we upgraded the wheels and tires to wider OEM spec wheels in an effort to improve the vehicle's efficiency during driving and braking. On May 25, 2025, after a vehicle brake-checked the vehicle in front of our Camaro, the Camaro was unable to adequately perform the brake operation due to wheel lockup, resulting in an accident. While the vehicle in front of our Camaro managed to maneuver out of the way, the Camaro's wheels locked when decreasing speed to apply the brakes. When brakes were applied despite only traveling at 37-40 mph, the Camaro felt like it was not slowing down, as if the brakes were not working correctly. Forcing a maneuver to the left side, scraping and damaging the front and rear wheels/tires, and impacting the rear end of a 2021 Chevrolet Spark. The Camaro suffered substantial damage exceeding 19,000, and our son, the driver, sustained physical injuries. Unfortunately, we were NOT notified of the recall # N242480630, until June 2 2025 many days after the accident. We received the notification via the OnStar service we pay for, and a few days after via the Progressive Insurance app. A police report was filed, my son was ticketed for failing to control the vehicle, and the insurance deemed it an at-fault accident (due to being a rear-end collision). The vehicle has been deemed a total loss.
We purchased a vehicle from shamley in El Paso Texas and we were in volved in a head on coullsion. We tried to stop and the breaks didn't function we were going 25 mph. We lost traction control and hit a car who took the red light and the air bags popped and the driver airbags emblem was marked on my forearm. May you please assist me

Tl* the contact owns a 2019 chevrolet camaro. While driving approximately 50 mph, the driver attempted to turn the vehicle to make a right turn. The contact stated that the brake pedal was difficult to depress. The contact lost control of the vehicle and struck a pole. The driver's air bag failed to deploy. The driver suffered back injuries that did not require medical attention. The onstar system provided an alert that the anti-lock brake system and stabilitrak were defective and the vehicle should be serviced within seven days. Onstar detected the brake failure the day after the crash. The vehicle was towed and a police report was filed. The manufacturer was contacted and provided case number: 95584814713. The cause of the failure was not determined. The dealer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 9,000. *ln*jb
Driving down the freeway and the driver side rear tire locks up and brakes become hard as a rock, and cause me to spin out on the freeway. Radio cut off and felt like the car was picking up speed rather then slowing down! Onstar then proceeded to tell me via email there is an issue with my anti braking system and stability trac system after the crash.
The tires spun out of control while going the speed limit and wearing a seatbelt. The brakes ultimately failed. The car had no functional safety features, and I couldn't control the steering. It went airborne and rolled over. The airbags failed to deploy after hitting a tree. My safety and others were put at risk, and I almost died from the accident. I suffer from life-threatening/altering injuries.

We were hit perpendicular to the passenger side door of our 2021 Camaro. The side airbag(s) did not go off. The other vehicle was going about 15-20 mph upon impact. The right side of our car was seriously smashed in. Its a good thing the passenger was not killed or injured and this is a law of physics abnormality.
I was in a hit and run accident and my car was totaled. I had a passenger and her airbags deployed but the driver side didn't. I had reported that the service airbag alert was on when I first got the vehicle at carmax and they told us to take it to the chevy service center . I picked up the car a few days later and was told that it was fixed but after the accident , I'm sure it wasnt.

I own a 2000 chevrolet astro van which i have not been able to drive for over a year because of malfunctioning antilock brakes. I brought it to be repaired last year and paid over $800 for one set of brakes, the other set still needs to be fixed. The antilock brakes prevent the vehicle from stopping when traveling at slow speeds. This is a definite safety problem. There has been a service bulletin for this problem on this vehicle since 2002. There is currently an investigation of this very problem on similar chevy suvs and trucks, but not including the astro van.

Our 2014 chevy camaro ss power steering would lock up on us when we were driving and would jerk and we wouldn't be able to steer the car and it was very scary especially when you were going the speed limit on the interstate going 65-70 mph. My husband was coming home from court on 9/8/20 and it was also our 10 year anniversary and it locked up on him and the next thing he knew he was hit by a lady and he was on the side of the road and our car was totaled and he dont even have any recolition of what happened the impact of the lady hitting him knocked him out and he is lucky to be alive he suffered a broke arm and had to have surgery to have a plate and screws put in to repair it and we dont have a vehicle now. We had just purchased the car the end of may 2020. We seen a recall on the steering locking up and the chevy dealer said they couldn't replace it because the vin number wasn't on recall. How can a vehicle that is doing the same exact thing as the same exact vehicle with a different letter in the vin not be on recall for the same exact defect? My husband is lucky to be alive and now we are left with no vehicle. Can someone please tell me how this is possible id like to have my vehicle replaced due to this recall that was defective in my vehicle. We have a friend who had the same issue and they told him the same thing about his vin so he traded his camaro in for a different vehicle. I would love to have my car replaced or repaired because of this issue/recall. Im uploading a picture of what my camaro looks like now.
*nm

Feb 2019, i received a call from the chevy dealer where i purchased my camaro back in april 2017, stating that my vehicle has a safety recall which effect the electric power steering. I read up on the recall which stated, the electric steering can fail while operating the vehicle which will make it hard to steer. I contacted the dealer to bring my car in for service, they told me that there was no remedy for the recall and that they will reach out to me when they have one. Manufacturer recall number n182182760. Nhtsa recall number, 19v086 * (recall related incident) ts it is now june 2019 and on 6/16/19, i was driving my car about 15-20mph, driving around a roundabout and my steering wheel locked on me, causing me to wreck my car which caused my seat and overhead airbags to deploy along with suspension, wheel and body damage. I had the wheel turned left going around the circle and as i was trying to turn the steering wheel back to the right to exit the roundabout, my steering wheel locked, causing me to run over top of the curb striking my wheels on the edge of the steel sewer and back into the street striking the left side of my vehicle on an island exiting the roundabout which caused my airbags to deploy. Once my airbags deployed my engine and electrical was shut down automatically. I did suffer a hard impact on my left shoulder from the airbag. Gm finally came up with a remedy this month 6/2019 for the recall. A representative from the dealer gave me gm's customer service number to call and report the incident. I had to file an insurance claim with my insurance and if my car is repairable, i would have to pay my deductible and suffer higher insurance rates all because of a recall that gm fail to repair in a timely manner. My steering column came completely out and pinned me back to the seat and almost went through the roof of the car. I was stopped at a red light then all of a sudden i was hit at an estimated speed of 60-65 mph. The guy never hit his brakes but hit me and pushed me through the light. Pictures are posted. The scratch mark is of the roof, where steering column almost went through it. Gm did send an engineer down to my house to investigate, he was there 5 hrs and when he left he was still shocked that a rear end and it did this. He did say that if i had of been hit in the head area i would be dead. I did have surgery on my left thumb and wrist i had a rupture of the ulnar collateral ligament with avulsion to my left thumb. Surgeon states i will never be 100% again..

While driving with traffic on 6 lane road with 45 mph speed limit, the vehicle, a 2012 chevrolet camaro convertible, was struck from the rear by a box truck at speed causing a significant delta-v event. Upon initial impact, the steering wheel, airbag, ignition lock, turn signal and wiper switch assembly, spline shaft and metal cylinder from the tilt/telescoping assembly separated from the vehicle as a single assembly. The steering wheel assembly struck the driver in the chest and jaw, breaking the mandible in multiple places. Driver also sustained compression fracture of the t12 vertebra among other injuries. The vehicle continued moving forward after the initial impact but driver could not steer with the separated steering wheel. Vehicle drifted off the right side of the road striking a 6? I-beam supporting a road sign. Electrical connections to the airbag and ignition separated during the initial impact.
I'm writing, because i believe the chevy camaro may possibly have some faulty parts. Today there was a,deadly crash involving a chevy camaro that exploded,on impact. Apparently the passengers, burned to death in this vehicle. Since i myself drive a,2011,chevy camaro i was wondering what would cause this vehicle to,explode. I googled "camaro fire impact" to see,if any possible recalls, how ever i noticed,i came across several articles online where they stated of camaros bursting into, flames, upon impact, and according to these, articles people have died in these vehicles, due,to,the, fires. *tr
My 2010 camaro has the 3.6 v6 engine in it. I had no warning lights or issues with the car. I got in my car and started to drive on a highway the engine exploded on me and I swerved out of control luckily being able to stop the car on the right side of the road. I had the car towed to my house where it sat for months unable to be driven. I have been doing more and more research trying to figure out why it blew up. Me and my passenger could have died that day with how badly the force of the engine through the car out of control. And the chunks of steel that flew from under my car almost killed 2 kids in a car behind me. And upon talking to an associate who is a gm certified mechanic but he doesn't work for a dealership his diagnosis was the timing chain went bad prematurely and snapped and set off a chain reaction making the motor explode. During my time researching I have discovered this issue is already known by general motors for this engine having premature timing chain wear down. I have pictures of other 2010 camaro owners complaints of this issue. I also am aware gm has faced several class action law suits due to this issue. They put a recall out on the engine but specific vin numbers. So when I called gm customer service asking why I can't get my car repaired and my engine replaced they told me it was due to not being a vin number they included in the recalls even though they are aware it is the same engine. The recall should be for all vin numbers for this engine. My safety as well as others safety was put at risk for a known defect. This issue could happen to anyone with this engine and people could be killed due to it and those that survive the situation when it arises get left without a working vehicle. Now my car sits in my driveway without an engine. There should be a mass recall for all the engines. there is a burning oil smell, that is so pungent it causes nausea and burning of the eyes when driving the vehicle. have taken it to 2 separate dealerships, the first told me they could not find an oil leak and i would have to deal with it. the second dealership stated that it is a valve on the back of the motor and that there is nothing they can do about it. i was told not to roll down the windows and to leave recirculate on. called and spoke to gm directly and they state take it to a third dealer and they denied my request to send a master tech to check the vehicle. i am left with driving a car that leave me nauseated and is a possible hazard to drive.

Trying to park at low speed there is a rubbing sound of plastic and light metal.there was fluid on top of the reservoir! Dealer cleaned it twice and it comes back.they claim the rubbing and scraping metal behind the air bag is fine. They even called gm,general motors says its all fine!you can hear a wobble and whistle from under the hood while accelerating slightly and turning steering wheel.there is also a severe wobble from the pulleys and engine is vibrating like crazy!there is also a rattling metal sound when you start the cat that seems to be coming from the fuel tank!the dealer burlington chevrolet says that i just don't know how the camaro is. I bought two other geration fives. One from them! Never in for nothing but maintenance. It was a great car!i also had a 2012 camaro rs 45th anniversary and traded it with 21,000 miles and except for a brake leak at the reservoir that took about 5 times to fix that car was awesome. Once they fixed it i drove over a year with nothing but maintenance. I only traded it due to severe unibody damage! *tr

Takata recall, i was driving down my city street when all of a sudden i believe it was a pot hole or just uneven gravel leading my knee hit the key in the ignition and in that second i had no control or control of what happened next. I could not brake, my seat belt locked on me hurting my collar bone, then my wheel was so hard to turn i was using both hands aggressively to turn as hard as i can just so i wouldn't hit a building or cause damage to others and as i was sterling i would keep pressing the brakes and they were just locked. I had to hit a barrier of wood to stop my car. The airbags did not deploy as well which was very scary. I had no control of my car for the first time and it was not my fault, this has never happened and i know it's because of the key being bumped.
