The BECM failed, engine light on, car is at reduced power or doesn't run at all. A message states that there are no EV miles available when it is full to to place the shifter into park. There is a free extended warranty for it (XXX- Special Coverage--Battery Energy Control Module Malfunction - ) but my Chevrolet dealership in Wenatchee, Washington says that it's not covered. I want to know why they said this. I have been stranded without an operable car, unable to get to and from work. If I don't go to work, I can't pay my mortgage. I don't have another car to drive or the means to rent one. It needs to be towed 90 miles to a dealership which that price will be astronomical on my poverty level income. I have cancer and need to get to my treatments. The cost to replace the BECM is $2100-$3000 out of pocket not including towing. The error code was read as a failed BECM by a diagnostic reader and it's having all the symptoms of a failed BECM. It has the following code: P1E00 $07E8Pd Initial symptoms in the prior week before the car wouldn't operate, was that I got a message to put the car into park when it was already in park. Sometimes the display wouldn't work. Sometimes the heater wouldn't turn on in the preceding 2 months. GLOBAL SAFETY FIELD INVESTIGATIONS DCS6812 URGENT - DISTRIBUTE IMMEDIATELY reads that 2016-2018 Chevrolet Volt models are covered. I've attached this letter.

Approximately 3.5 weeks ago my 2017 Chevrolet Volt (105K miles) would not start and then, when it did, was in "Reduced Power Mode". I had to drive home 25+ miles in this low power mode. I brought to my local mechanic (not a Chevrolet dealership) first. They did a diagnostic and told me the issue was "Battery Energy Control Module" - a known issue in 2016-2018 Chevrolet Volts affecting 19,000 vehicles for Chevrolet provided extended warranty coverage for up to 15 years/150,000 miles. See Special Coverage N232432680. I was not able to get an appointment for 9 days at the Chevrolet dealership in Oxford PA. The vehicle needed to be towed there because it wouldn't start. Chevrolet dealership said it was not the Battery Energy Control Module but rather the 12V battery. They replaced battery, I picked up vehicle and paid $525+ for diagnostic and new battery. By the next day, the vehicle wouldn't start again. I brought the vehicle back and they did diagnostic again and this time determined it WAS the Battery Energy Control Module. Dealership said Chevrolet has not included your VIN in the Special Coverage and didn't know why not. I called Chevrolet/GM customer service (800-222-1020) and spoke with two people including an escalation supervisor and both said the VIN for my vehicle was not included because it was determined that would not be part of the Special Coverage they've offered. We went round and round and no one will give an answer as to why there is a KNOWN issue for 2016-2018 Chevrolet Volts yet my vehicle is being excluded. They said they have no ability to change it and include it in the Special Coverage. If months or years down the road, they determine it should have been included then they'll reimburse me. That answer is unacceptable. Between repairs, initial misdiagnoses and repair and rental car fees, I'm out over $5,000.

More than two weeks ago, my 2017 Chevrolet Volt LT showed BECM codes. The local dealership service center said they would order the parts for a complete replacement. The work and parts are covered under warranty as this has been a common issue. The BECM and coolant arrived within a few days, but the remaining parts are back ordered! After two weeks of waiting GM has failed to send the parts and I and my family are in need of our vehicle for both work and safety reasons. The part number for the parts that still need to be sent is: 11517042. The warranty coverage number from Chevrolet's bulletin in regards to this failure is: N232432680.

The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Volt. The contact stated while the vehicle was parked, the vehicle stalled; the contact stated that the vehicle was jumpstarted and the vehicle to returned to normal operation; however, the failure reoccurred on several occasions. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the Battery Energy Control Module (BECM) needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was towed to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the 12-volt battery needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the check engine warning light illuminated again. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 107,000.

While driving my Chevy Volt lost power as it disconnected from a full charged battery to gas as the check engine light lit on. The car would then hesitate after stopping at a light/stop sign, losing and regaining power as it gained momentum (which was very dangerous), and would no longer charge. The issue was confirmed by Sun Devil auto repair (diagnosis attached) that this was a known issue with Chevy Volts 2016-2018 and would be covered. I was advised that my VIN was not covered and paid Freeway Chevrolet $2,301.62 (invoice attached with BECM replacement) and would like to be reimbursed. The Chevy Volt's Battery Energy Control Module (BECM) warranty was extended by GM to 15 years or 150,000 miles, from its original 8-year/100,000-mile Volt Component coverage, for 2016-2018 models. This Special Coverage N232432680 addresses potential BECM malfunctions causing reduced power, no start, or no charge conditions. Details of the Extension •Coverage: 15 years or 150,000 miles (whichever comes first) from the vehicle's original in-service date. •Affected Models: Chevrolet Volt models from the 2016, 2017, and 2018 model years. •Purpose: To cover issues with the Battery Energy Control Module (BECM) that can lead to reduced power, no-start, or no-charge conditions. I contacted Chevy and they recommended I file a complaint since they could not help me or explain why my make/model/year fits the criteria of a known issue and would not be covered.

I am writing regarding my Chevrolet Volt, which suffered the very common Battery Energy Control Module (BECM) failure that your office already investigated and which resulted in GM being required to extend coverage under special warranty reference: MC-10251431-0001 . Despite this, Chevrolet is refusing to cover my repair. Their reasoning: because my Volt was originally purchased in California, they claim it falls under CARB rules—but now that I live in Arizona, they insist neither California’s coverage nor the NHTSA-ordered special coverage applies. In effect, my vehicle has been trapped in a paperwork loophole GM is exploiting to avoid responsibility. This response is not in the spirit of your findings. The defect was not caused by geography, state lines, or ownership history. The BECM is a manufacturer defect, and it failed for the same reason thousands of others have failed: poor design and inadequate durability. Whether the car was first sold in California, Colorado, or Kansas is irrelevant—the failure is GM’s, and the repair obligation should be GM’s as well. By denying coverage on a technicality, Chevrolet is undermining the very purpose of the extended coverage you required: to protect owners from footing the bill for a well-documented, widespread, and unsafe defect. Their position leaves me, and others like me, bearing the costs of GM’s engineering failure. I ask that NHTSA review GM’s handling of these claims and require them to honor the extended coverage as intended, without hiding behind jurisdictional loopholes.

The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Volt. The contact stated while attempting to turn off the vehicle, the vehicle failed to respond as needed while shifted into park(P). The contact manipulated the gear shifter until park(P) was recognized and the vehicle turned off. No warning light was illuminated. The contact stated that an appointment with the dealer was scheduled to inspect the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 114,000.

The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Volt. The contact stated that upon arriving to his destination and moving the shift lever into park(P), the warning message " Shift to Park" was displayed, preventing the vehicle from turning off. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle returned to normal functionality, but the failure became a regular occurrence. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the gear position sensor. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to Technical Service Bulletin: 19-NA-206. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, a case was opened, and the contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was 85,000.

I was attempting to purchase this vehicle from Payless Used car sales in Anchorage Alaska. I noticed odometer discrepancies between the mechanic reported odometer in 2022 and the present odometer in 2025. The 2022 reported odometer was 60000, and now in 2025 it is 47000. When I made this concern to the salesman he asked me to leave. I left and won’t consider purchasing from this dealership in the future.

Shifter malfunctions when shifted to PARK. Car does not recognize shifted to PARK and error message appears on dash. States, SHIFT TO PARK. Will not fully shut off vehicle.
May 15, 2025
BECM is broken. Not covered under special warranty but have been told the PZEV warranty would cover it. Dealer & GM will not even discuss covering it. This should not be a VIN specific fix as the part is identical in all 2016-2018 Chevy Volts.

The EGR valve in my Volt suddenly failed with NO warning while driving 70 mph on the highway. I had to pull over before the engine overheated and I stopped on the side of interstate in a very tight shoulder on a curve with traffic and semi trucks passing by very closely. I’ve now been waiting over one year for repair as Chevrolet is unable to make this part for a repair that is still covered under warranty. Very disappointed and I hope this report will help push a larger message through that Chevrolet is being irresponsible with making parts for the needed warranty repairs.

After looking up an issue with my Volt, I learned that this is a big safety issue and very common. When I put the car in park there is now an intermittent issue that says "shift to park" on the display and the car will not shut off, and I cant confirm that the car is actually in Park.

Vehicle lost all motive power while driving on the Highway. Vehicle is part of GM Special Coverage program number N232432680 for BECM issues up to 150,000 miles. Vehicale currently has 109350 miles. Failure on highway while driving is unacceptable and should have been a recall instead of special warranty. GM support is not helpful with service or transportation (one month out for service only at select locations). Vehicle will not restart and had to be pushed from the roadway.

Battery Energy Control Module Failure There is an existing NTHSB issue related: N232432680 I was told my VIN is not included in this issue, so the failure is not covered under warranty by GM. That said, the same failure and symptoms occurred (prompt multiple battery cell failures leading to electric drive inoperable). I was told, by others with Volt's who had same issue, that my VIN was not included because it was under a PZEV warranty since it was originally sold in California. I do not live in California, so the extended 150K mile / 15 year warranty does not apply to me. Car is currently at the dealership, and I was told the same repairs as in this NTHSB issue are needed at a price of > $2,500. As such, I am asking to have my VIN added to this issue for reimbursement.

EGR valve and EGR cooler failure. Engine power was reduced and EGR fuse kept blowing. Has code for EGR flow failure/restriction. Check engine light remains on even when reset
Oct 11, 2025
Thousands of 2014-2017 Chevy Volt owners are having issues where the EGR Valve malfunctions and the engine shuts down. The Volt's EGR valve can cause the car to shut down by blowing the "walk home" fuse. This is a safety issue. In many cases cars are in the shop for months because the part is on "backorder". That's my situation-- dealer just told me it's a $2800 repair job, but the part is on "backorder". The car only has 49K miles. EGR Valve stop functioning, which caused Service not available engine check light on. This is a hybrid plugin, when battery is low, it is dangerous is Gas Engine not functioning. This EGR Valve is super expensive, the fix (Parts and Labor) is over $3300. The car milage was only a little over 58800 miles. Without getting this repaired, the emission inspection will not be passed in Virginia.
Jun 28, 2025
My 2017 Volt reported a "Propulsion Power is Reduced" message on the display. When I took the car to the dealership for service, they stated that a new EGR valve was needed. The part alone is $1847. The total service with labor would have been over $3000. Looking online, it is a very common issue for the gen 2 Volts. Unfortunately, the dealership is saying this repair is not covered under warranty.

EGR Valve failed in this vehicle <55,000 miles. The EGR valve has an electronic component that, when fails, can cause the car to shut down by blowing the "walk home" fuse. This is a safety issue. This is a well documented problem (internet) and Chevrolet refuses to fix it, leaving the owners with an expensive replacement quoted at $3900 (Sept 2025). Recommend that it be covered by the emissions warranty, which was recently extended to 150,000 miles and 8 years for other problematic emissions components. An electric vehicle that cannot be driven because an EGR valve is faulty - it's a joke.

While driving the vehicle, the car shut down. Thankfully I was coming to a yield at a round about after exiting the Interstate. I was finally able to get it to restart and proceeded on my way. If this had happened on the Interstate myself, and other drivers would be at risk due to unassisted steering and braking. I also have experienced intermittent periods of "Reduction of Power" while on the interstate and other 55MPH plus highways. This presents a hazard to myself and other drivers as well. These issues ARE covered for similar vehicles under Special Warranty Coverage N232432680 as required by NHTSA on March 6, 2024. My vehicle also exhibits all of the primary symptoms described in that coverage, but GM claims that my vehicle is NOT covered. CEL is on. Can't charge condition Reduced power No start condition

There was a recall for the HPCM2 where the propulsion power reduced warning would come on whenever the car's cell battery was depleted. This happened with my car and there were several times it slowed on the freeway and on exit ramps as I tried to safely get my car off the road. It first happened on 4/13/25. I took my car to a regular mechanic who charged me 3k of repairs on basic maintenance, new tires, etc but were unable to fix this issue. They advised it was a manufacturer issue and to go to a hybrid specialist or a dealership. I called a hybrid specialist who found the faulty code and advised the same. I took my car to Felix Chevrolet (3330 S. Figueroa St. LA, CA 90007) and they offered to do many maintenance service items that I had done earlier this week in an attempt to fix the HPCM2 software bug. After I told them that the maintenance items were complete, they called me back an hour later to tell me I needed other maintenance repairs that are less common. When I gave them the description of the recall and re-explained this is identical to my car's symptoms and that this manufacturing issue may have affected other vehicles like mine that were outside of the recall batch, they told me it was impossible to apply this diagnosis as long as my VIN number was outside of the recall batch. Can you please add my VIN to this recall or have my car reviewed by someone who can debug the software?

My Chevy Volt went into Reduced Propulsion System Power Mode, the Engine light came on and the vehicle stalled while sitting at a traffic light on [XXX] at [XXX] in Tyler Texas. Checking the computer and the complaints online I found that my 15 AMP #03 fuse (No Walk Home) had blown. I replaced the fuse and the next day on [XXX] the same thing happened again after driving 30 miles. The vehicle stalled at an intersection outside of Tyler Texas. The EGR Valve is known to cause the fuse to blow, so I had no choice but to unplug the EGR Valve and replaced the fuse and has not blown the fuse since. This is BOTH a safety issue and an emissions issue, but the replacement part cannot be found anywhere to purchase anymore so I am having to drive this vehicle with this ongoing safety issue. Due to the nature of the EGR Valve blowing the fuse all the time and that it affects the safety of the vehicle a nationwide recall needs to be done on these vehicles to force GM to start making the part again. This is a dangerous flaw that will cause the vehicle to stall and create a safety hazard. This has been ongoing for quite some time with these Volts, and something needs to be done about it ASAP. I was driving at about 50mph all of a sudden I got a propulsion error and my car stopped working it had no power! People had to swerve around me and I was almost hit. My car would not drive I shut it off and back on multiple times. Finally it started but would not go above 25 it was so scary. I went to the dealership they said it’s known issue since 2016 and that my miles were too high so it would not be covered to fix the total amount it almost 3,000 this seems unfair that Chevy would continue to sell a vehicle knowing it had issues with a energy control module and not fix it for free. Especially when you could be killed while driving it!!

May 09, 2024
Car would not start, lose power, or show propulsion reduced message. This seemed to have been an ongoing issue related to cold weather (bought in July 2019) and would occasionally get temporary check engine lights. Dec 2022 and Jan 2023 cold weather seemed to aggravate w car no starting on occasion. Eventually by January car started propulsion reduced error. Turned out to be BECM (which had been under service bulletin in 2019). Other related repairs like shift to park issue and drained 12 volt battery also repaired at MY personal cost of nearly $4,000. The propulsion issue almost led to some accidents when it would happen pulling into road or on highway driving.

Check engine light came on car was able to start but the cluster started reading the battery being full with a charge. And was having trouble starting. Fast forward a day I get a propulsion system reduced warning on the dash as I’m entering the highway and the car fails to stay on I’m able to pull it to the shoulder and I cannot get the car to start. Get towed home throw it on the charger and the dash says unable to charge. swap the 12v (checked it and it died) thinking that might fix the problem since the car was able to power on but not start. To no avail through my code reader and code p1e00 code. Took it to my local dealer and was told id need replace the becm… and was quoted 33xx for the repair. Had any of this happened while I was on the freeway I might not have been able to make it to the shoulder potentially putting myself and others on the road and a possibly fatal situation.

N232432680 / PE23022 On some 2016-2018 model year Chevrolet Volt vehicles, a malfunction involving the battery energy control module (BECM) may cause a reduced power mode, a no start condition, or a no charge condition. The above safety issue required an extended warranty recall for *all* 2016-2018 Chevrolet Volts due to a known issue with failing battery energy control modules (BECM). The warranty was not extended to vehicles sold in CARB states, as the Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle (PZEV) warranty is the same as the extended warranty granted by the NHTSA investigation which resulted in the extended warranty noted above. (N232432680) However, it GM's practice to decline warranty coverage for a CARB vehicle with the PZEV warranty if it is not longer registered in a CARB state, thereby skirting around the special coverage from the NHTSA investigation. This is a circumvention of the findings by the NHTSA and the safety of motorists.

Automation-On 10.1.24 my car stopped working. It would turn on, but would not shift. It was also showing my EV was fully charged but the EV miles read 0. My husband came and plugged my car in and saw that when I turned the car on it read "shift to park" Also the codes from my OnStar app read "Lithium Ion Battery"- Issue found in High Voltage battery. "12 volt battery needs attention" 10.2.24 we called GM to report issues and referenced N232432680 (BCEM). We were informed that even though we can read diagnostic reports on OnStar it needed to be confirmed from a certified GM dealership that they could not confirm this is the warranty issue if they did not 1st had the certified dealership share their diagnostic report. Bergstrom shared it sounded like BECM that is under warranty. They continued to share it didnt look good and the VIN was not in the system to be covered. Shared the minimum amount we would pay was $440 for the 2 issues for labor/diagnostics.10.4.24 we called GM to file a report we were given a case manager to work our case. 10.8.24 received call from case manager shared no warranties seen on file. I asked for this to be documented and emailed to me, I was told she could not share this information other than this phone call. Bergstrom called saying the car was ready to pick up, cleared codes/no issues, drove 26 miles with no codes. Shared GM never seen/heard anything like this and had no advise/help to offer. Shared only charged for 1 hour of labor. Asked for trade in for car. Was given price $1,200 under trade in value. Cause due to car not safe, potential issues. No documentation shared, nothing to show issues, car is clean/cleared to drive they had no answer than my car was fine but was not able to give lowest amount for trade in due to issues

Without warning, my car stopped charging. Noticed it was at 0 miles despite charging it the night before. Believing I may have not properly connected the home cord (supplied by Chevy) to the car, I chalked it up to being my mistake and plugged in again the next night. Same result. 0 miles. Then it immediately started acting like a 12V battery failure with engine warning lights and then it just refused to start and/or charge and was dead in the water. I called AAA for a battery jump and they came. It got the car started, but the check engine light remained lit for two days and I primarily ran the car on its gas generator to hopefully charge it. Just last night, the check engine light went away. Despite having a partial charge, this morning 8/29, it registered 3 miles down from being higher. I just plugged in to my home outlet using the chevy cord, and again, it would not charge (no green light on dash indicating active charge and a message on the dash should "unable to charge". I suspect a Battery Energy Control Mondule (BECM) failure which seems to happen with this car. My 12V ACDELCO battery is relatively new (3 yrs) and not used heavily (given COVID).

I was driving my car from Houston to Dallas when I got the "reduced propulsion" message and a check engine light. When I first saw the reduced propulsion issue I thought it might be related to the BECM issue again since I had already experienced that problem before. In the last few minutes of my trip the AC started to get hot and when I checked the coolant temperature I noticed it was around 240 - 255 F. I hadn't noticed it since there was no warning light for high temperature which I am used to with other cars. I'm not sure of the full extent of the issues yet, but I know for certain that the EGR valve has failed completely at about 71,500 miles. This is with very few miles on the actual ICE. I typically only use the ICE for a few hundred miles of driving each year. Fortunately for me, even though the CEL came on for the reduced propulsion I was able to reach my destination. However, when I went to leave, the car left me stranded as the ICE would shut down after a few minutes of running. The propulsion system is reduced and the engine becomes unavailable. Only the battery power will allow the car to drive. The F3 fuse in the EGR circuit blows if the engine is activated, and has happened multiple times already confirming the EGR issue. I have additional check engine lights that are a result of the EGR failure to circulate coolant properly. Below is a list of all the CEL codes that were pulled: P06DB P0030 P0031 P0403 P0405 P0443 P0458 P0489 P0597 P0598 P06DA P0AC4 P0135 P0AC4 P16E0 Looking into this issue I found that this is an one of the most common failures in the Chevy Volts but is no longer covered under the vehicle warranty and no bulletins posted for an extended warranty other than the BECM failure. This failure is so prevalent that I am surprised it is not.

While making a 90 mile drive on 7/20, after having depleted the primary battery charge and switched to hybrid mode, a "propulsion power is reduced" warning appeared on the console, along with the Check Engine Light. Other than somewhat reduced power (max displayed of ~40-50 kW), performance otherwise seemed unimpeded. Contacted local dealership to schedule service for earliest available date of 7/26. Car made return 90 mile trip on 7/21 without issue additional issue ("propulsion power is reduced" message remained.) Service identified "numerous codes", but replaced a fuse known to result in the above issue and observed no other issues. Car was driven purely on battery at that time, and for the intervening time until a 170 mile drive on 8/2, where the message and Check Engine Light reappeared, again after battery charge was consumed and car switched to hybrid power mode. Dealership was again contacted to schedule service, slated for the morning of 8/7 (tomorrow, as of this writing). Car reached its destination without further incident. During return 170 mile trip on 8/5, traveling on the highway, car abruptly alerted that the engine was no longer available and entered a severely reduced-power mode. Car had been operating in "mountain mode" (conserving some extra battery charge) as a precaution, so we were able safely exit the highway and pull into a local parking lot, at which point AAA was contacted to tow the car the remaining 120 miles home. Upon arriving home, the car was able to pull into the garage without the "engine not available" alert, but still displaying Check Engine Light and "propulsion power reduced" messages. We have come to understand this is a fairly common issue with Generation II Volts and have been advised by other owners to file this report.

BECM failure on car confirmed at 128,000 miles. While driving the car's check engine light came on; immediately followed by a message of reduced propulsion and the EV range dropping to 0. Vehicle switched to gas and ran very rough for a short distance to an available stop. Have been informed by dealership that the vehicle is now unsafe for driving due to a potential stall.

Loss of Motive Power due to EGR Valve. I was driving down the highway when I experienced a loss of motive power and the Volt entered a reduced power state while in moving traffic. After the EV battery ran out and the ICE turned on, the following message showed up on the instrument panel "Propulsion Power Is Reduced" and the check engine light turned on. The Volt slowed down and would not accelerate to the speed of the moving traffic. I was able to get off the highway and drive home under reduced power which was still not safe. The engine ran very rough on the way home and was not able to maintain speed high enough for the flow of traffic on the roads. The dealer diagnosed the issues as a failed EGR Valve. The part was on backorder for about a month. In that time, a GM trained technician deemed the car operable (according to GM standards) and said that I could take it back and drive it on electricity only. Unfortunately, that meant that the EV range is about 40 miles in winter after a full charge and running out of electricity would again result in a hazardous loss of power. The behavior of the car under this reduced propulsion is Identical to the one in investigation PE23022 - Loss of Motive Power due to the Battery Energy Control Module. The Chevy Volt EGR Valve issue is a common problem reported in other NHTSA complaints and Volt forum posts and I am surprised that there has not been a recall. I hope that this issue is investigated same as the BECM issue. The latest episode with my 2017 Chevy Volt is a culmination of years of issues with the low clearance on the vehicle causing continual damage and unsafe driving conditions that require expensive repairs due to the design flaw (note - I had a 2014 Chevy Volt that had NONE of these problems). My son was driving the car a week ago and the Engine Control Module (GM part # 12700116) fell OUT of the car. This led to the car to stop driving instantly - if he had been anywhere other than a quiet residential street it could have been catastrophic. Upon having towed the vehicle to the dealership, I was informed that the wiring harness failed which led to the ECM falling onto the street. I drive this car strictly in city limits and on major highways, and despite this the bottom undercarriage is constantly damaged because it is simply to low to the ground. In addition to the repair bill of $3K+ (my 4th repair required due to this defect), the harness isn't even available and GM cannot provide an ETA for when it will be. I experienced a similar issue 6 months ago when a part was backordered for 3+ months and this is compounded by the fact that their dealerships no longer have loan car inventory. Note that there was no warning before this happened. I have tried escalating to GM but their response is essentially that I am SOL. Again - this is a design flaw of the vehicle that should have been addressed but never was. Note that this doesn't include the other continual issues (well documented) that continue to plague the car after other recall service (loss of propulsion, shifter issues that frequently make it impossible to actually turn the car off, etc.)

This is a safety issue for Chevy Volt. After seven years of good operation, our 2017 Chevrolet Volt stopped running in traffic while we were driving on [XXX]. The Check Engine Light was on, and "Reduced Propulsion" Message on dashboard panel. We brought it to the dealer from whom we purchased the vehicle. Tech Report paraphrased, Customer states CK Engine Light is on and "Reduced Propulsion" Message on dash Fault Codes: P0030, P0031, P0054, P0135, P0403, P0405, P0443, P0458, P0489, P0597, P0598, P06DA, P06DB Found fuse [F03] blown for EGR valve Likely EGR Valve sticking and causing fuse to blow. The technician stated the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve is defective, and needs to be replaced. Replacements are scarce, on backorder, and can be many weeks or months to wait for a part. Many report their Volt unusable, sitting idle, waiting for EGR replacement. EGR valve replacement cost is quoted as $2800, which is quite expensive for a valve replacement. This has been happening in recent time to many Volt owners. There are many reports in online forums and no the GM forum website. [XXX] There has been no diligence, interest, nor cooperation from GM. The cost of replacing the defective valve is usurious, outrageous, indefensible. This is a problem well known by GM, who neglects their obligation to contact owners of a safety hazard inherent in their vehicles. The Volt's EGR valve can cause the car to shut down by blowing the "walk home" [F03] fuse, which was our experience. This is a safety issue. The vehicle tells me to "stop and shift to park" while I am driving, and power was lost to accessories such as the climate control. Since the EGR was identified as the cause of the problem, the car remains on "Propulsion Power Reduced" mode. The EGR has been backordered for months, if not years, and aftermarket third-party EGR valves are not readily available either. However, there is no recall, and this is clearly a common problem on these vehicles as attested on GM-Volt forums. The EGR failed about one year ago, but now the message on reduced propulsion power is presented every time I start the vehicle.

Reduced propulsion power and check engine light. EGR valve failure per mechanic. Part has been on a global back order for 1.5 years. The car will not pass emissions testing and can blow a fuse that will make the car inoperable. The part is also costly at 2400.00 without labor costs. My car has 83,000 miles, is well-maintained and only 7 years old and now I can’t drive it or sell it.

My 2017 Chevrolet Volt is experiencing "a malfunction involving the battery energy control module (BECM)" as diagnosed by the Davis-Moore dealership. This failure of the BECM has now caused "a reduced power mode, a no start condition, or a no charge condition". The car currently does not start or charge. My vehicle has be diagnosed as needing a BECM replacement at a Chevrolet dealership. The vehicle is currently inoperable as it will not charge, it will not engage the electric drive mode, and it will not engage the range extender (engine). The car does not start. GM is showing that there is no active recall or special warranty for my vehicle, however, I believe special warranty N23243268 should apply.

My experience required me to tow my 2017 Chevy Volt from a parking garage, where the BECM died, to 2 different dealerships back and forth to my home. I have been charged over $1,000 in towing and diagnostics at my local dealerships. As usual they informed that I need a new $10k battery. I did my own research and the error codes (U2603, U2604, U2605, U2606, U2617, U2618, U2619, U2620, U2621, U2622, U2623, U2624 and P1E00) clearly indicate that my BECM failed. I was able to check the health and status of the traction battery and it functioning correctly. On my 3rd trip to my local dealership service department with the Special Coverage Program N232432680 in hand, the dealership informed me that yes my BCM had failed and there was a Special Coverage Program for 2016-2019 Chevy Volts, but that MY VIN NUMBER WAS NOT COVERED. There were a limited number of VINS that received warranty extensions for BECM, but mine was not.

While operating my Chevy Volt on a Los Angeles Freeway, warning lights came on informing me to park immediately, and that the power propulsion was reduced. The Check Engine light also came on. At that point the “Shift to Park” message came on. My car is experiencing the “Shift to Park” issue. I already had this happen previously in 2023. The repair cost $1,200. There are many, many references to this issue on the Internet. The “Shift to Park” defect is well known in the Chevy Volt community. When this happened the SECOND time, ([XXX]), I was stranded on the side of an LA freeway. The car will not start. It will cycle through the “Shift to Park” message on the dashboard and it will not go anywhere. The car initializes, so there is power in the vehicle, but no propulsion. Purchased the '17 Chevy Volt for my Daughter on [XXX] with 58,867 miles. On [XXX], 60,600 miles; She was driving on the interstate when the engine temperature spiked, followed by a check engine light and a warning message: "Engine unavailable." The vehicle suddenly lost power when she reduced pressure on the accelerator, causing a rapid reduction in speed. nearly causing her to lose control. The vehicle's OBD Codes were scanned at a nearby auto parts store resulting in 30 DTC appearing. I found hundreds of complaints and posts about the F3UA fuse blown and a faulty EGR valve. A service bulletin for this issue was published by GM in Feb 2023. I notified the dealership of the issues and the vehicle was brought to Deacon Jones Chevy of Clinton, NC on July 16th. The service department informed me that the 12V Battery was bad and needed replacement to "correct" the issue, at a cost nearly $550. I asked if the fuse mentioned was blown and was informed that it was not. The check engine light was cleared and my daughter drove home. Before getting home, the check engine light came back on, the temperature spiked, and "propulsion power is reduced." message appeared. This was accompanied again by a rapid reduction in speed nearly causing a collision. I called the dealership back and informed them of the incident. They requested to have the vehicle brought back to the shop, however, towing was out of the question because the dealership is 70 miles from me & I did not want to drive the car in its condition. I took the vehicle to Team Chevy in Swansboro, NC, who ran proper diagnostics. I was informed the F3UA fuse was blown, caused by a short in the EGR Valve. The original dealer offered to split the cost, but Team Chevy said they could get the part & match price. When ordered, it showed the EGR Valve was backorder with no ETA. 6 weeks in and no safe transportation for my daughter and grandson. Significant safety issue with no replacement parts or accountability, ludicrous. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

While driving my 2017 Chevy Volt on the highway, a “Propulsion power is reduced” message appeared accompanied by the CEL. Prior to this there had been no indication that anything was wrong. The warning was quite vague and it wasn’t at all clear what it actually meant so I continued driving. Shortly after this, I began to notice a bit of a “chuggle” or lurching sensation (particularly on hills). This made the acceleration slightly unpredictable, and at one point even triggered the forward collision warning when the car accelerated a bit after I took my foot off the gas pedal (coming up behind another car at a traffic light). I pulled over and attempted to figure out what the issue was. I had a notice regarding the BECM recall in my glove box which listed a reduced power mode as a potential symptom, so I scheduled a service appointment (figuring it was that) and continued my trip. I stopped to get gas, then a mile or two down the road the engine overheated and shut off. By sheer luck I had a few miles of range left in electric mode which allowed me to pull over safely, but I was now stranded over 100 miles from home. I managed to get the vehicle to a dealership in Danvers, MA where they diagnosed the problem as a failed EGR valve. My understanding is this is related to a defect in the valve electronics. The valve failed and blew the F3 fuse, which also supplies power to the engine cooling system. It doesn’t take long for the engine to overheat and it seems this can lead to a complete loss of power while driving when the electric range is already depleted. The valve is currently unplugged while I await a replacement but there is no word on how long that might be. Other Volt owners have had to wait months or even years to get a new valve. The repair quote I received is also unreasonably expensive (> $4,000). I failed my state emissions inspection and am in the process of applying for a waiver. Given how common this is, I'm surprised this isn't already a recall.

The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Volt. The contact stated while her son was driving approximately 55 MPH, the vehicle lost motive power. The contact stated that the battery system became inoperable. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed that the cells and battery needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer informed the contact that parts were on backorder. The manufacturer was contacted and opened a case. The failure mileage was approximately 69,000.

My service engine light came on. After that happened, my engine started to get hot. It got up to 230degF, received a reduced propulsion message and wanted to shut down when going 70mph on the interstate (depended on the construction). Quick reaction on my side before the engine shut down I had "held" the battery (which i do for long trips to ensure options in event of emergencies). Meaning i still had energy in the battery that could be used to propel the vehicle. I was able to shut down the engine by unholding the battery before losing control of the vehicle due to no propulsion. The electric propulsion took over and I could get off the freeway. Conditions were: I was driving in a rain storm on a very busy interstate around Eau Claire wisconsin right around 5-6pm with lots of road construction. If I would have lost the engine and power, I would have crashed at a high rate of speed. I would have lost steering, windshield wipers and headlights. Investigation showed that fuse F03 (walk home fuse) was blown. Further investigation showed that the EGR Valve circuitry was causing this failure. After unplugging EGR valve and replacing the fuse, engine was able to run and not overheat. Plug the EGR valve back in and the fuse blows again This is a well known issue on these vehicles and has been around since 2019-2020. Lots of data and information available on this issue on the internet. To make the issue worse. No parts are available for replacing this faulty valve at the moment. Only 6 valves available in the whole USA with those promised to other customers (i Called the dealers). Additionally there are more vehicles waiting for these valves.. Vehicle goes to the shop on [XXX] for confirmation of issue and get on a waiting list for the EGR Valve. I can't believe this is allowed to continue with GM. THis needs to be fixed!!!! We bought the car for our son when he began to drive. We liked the idea that it was gas and electric. At the time, our son was into electric vehicles. At 44, 000 miles, 7/10/20 the car was taken to the dealership. The engine light was on at this point, the message displayed "Propulsion Power is Reduced". Once the diagnostic was done it was said that the EGR valve needed replacing. Of course, this is during the of COVID. Everything was shut down. No one is working. It is now a wait game. Prior to this our Chevy Volt has been in and out of the dealership with either recall or something else. We enjoy the car because of how it operates with gas and electric. Fast forward it is 80,000 miles now, and the car is at the dealership again. It has currently been there for almost a month. After blowing fuses it has be diagnosed as the EGR valve needs replacing again. The part is not available currently. No one seems to know when it might be available. The part cannot be purchased from our local distributor. GM is the only ones who makes it is our understanding. There is no other dealership near us that has certified technicians who can work on them. We called around and asked. We want to know what the solution is. How can this be prevented? We were over an hour away from home and no dealership was open when it went out the last time. It became worse to the point that we were stopped on the road with flashers on because it was not safe to pullover. Prayer works.

When moving the shifter to the "P" position after parking, the car will refuse to turn off with the message on the dash: "Action Needed: Shift to Park". Shifter is in Park position but car will not recognize this and does not turn off. The issue can sometimes be resolved by pressing the shifter knob button repeatedly, or by pulling the shifter all the way back to drive and forth to park multiple times until the message is cleared. This happens about 4/10 times that I drive, There is currently a bulletin posted by Chevy for a fix. However, the fix is only covered under a "warranty" and the Chevy repair center at the dealership quoted $400 to complete the repair out of warranty.

Failure of the BECM and “Shift to park” message. The vehicle will spontaneously produce a shift to park message when starting up the vehicle and turning it off. The vehicle will also show a 0 mile EV range and use the engine where a message saying “propulsion power reduced”. This will also cause the car to shut off randomly. The vehicle has not been inspected by a shop or the dealership. There is no warning or message when this happen. Check engine will appear once the vehicle has these issues.

In 2020 my 2017 Chevrolet Volt had an intermittent problem turning off. My Chevrolet dealer worked to fix the problem. This March I had an accident which involved me thinking the car was shut down. I was half way out of the car when I realized it was moving. Before I could get completely in to apply the brakes, I had hit and pushed an object into a building which caused damage to the building and my car. The was a police report which states that I was at fault. My car was towed to my. Chevrolet dealer for repair. The repair took about two months mostly due to obtaining shifting parts. I can now drive the car but the parts to replace the shifting mechanism is still on back order. It is now early October. The “shift into park” as I think the problem has been named, is still an intermittent problem for me. Sometimes the car shuts down promptly as it should. Sometimes however, I go though the process of shutting down a few times before I am confident that the car has really turned off. I would like to know if this defect has caused other accidents. If so, it my mitigate my responsibility for my my accident which has caused me grief and a large increase in my insurance premium. On November 8, I was on a 5 hour drive and after 4 hours while driving on the gas engine since the 43 mile electric range was already depleted, a warning suddenly appeared on the dashboard screen - Shift to Park, something about reduced propulsion and the check engine light came on. I was driving 55 mph on a highway and immediately had no propulsion whatsoever. Tried to pull over and barely got to the edge of the highway with cars and trucks speeding behind me and then around me. On the roadside, the car would turn on and off and I could change gears with the shifter, but no matter what I did the propulsion to move the car would not work. The car had to be towed to the nearest dealership for repairs where it remains.

While driving, a warning message came on: "Engine unavailable." I was able to drive a few more blocks but then the car stopped on its own. This happened despite the fact that the car had almost a full tank of gas. If this had happened on the highway, it would have been very dangerous. Luckily, I was on a fairly empty city street and I simply pulled to the curb. This is a known problem with the Chevy Volt (2017). An independent service center confirmed that the original problem is that the EGR valve needs replacing. When this is an issue, a fuse often blows and this fuse stops the car from moving. The vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance rep or others. There was a message that came on a few days before the incident that said "propulsion power is reduced." An independent service center said the EGR valve needs to be replaced. There are no EGR valves available; they have been on back order for months. I have an appointment with the Chevy dealer for next week, so they can confirm the EGR valve needs replacing and I can get on their waitlist to receive an EGR valve. This is expected to take 6-12 months or possibly longer. In the meantime, I can drive the car on electric charge but am supposed to avoid engaging the ICE engine. If I end up running out of electric charge, I am at risk of once again having the fuse blow and the car failing to move forward. This is ridiculous. Why is GM/Chevy not required to provide parts in a timely manner to existing customers to make sure their cars run safely? I am definitely not the only Volt owner experiencing this issue -- there are many people online complaining about the same issue. All of us risk a situation of the car stopping to run at any time.

check engine light has been on since Oct of 2023 due to needing EGR valve. Dealership placed order for part number 12691147 in Oct and says it has been on backorder from GM with no estimated delivery date. I just placed an order for the same part via GM parts center. Vehicle went to low propulsion mode and would not move at a stop light during rush hour traffic. After many trial and errors restarting the car it finally moved under low propulsion mode. We were almost hit from behind many times because of people at the last minute turning around a stalled car... GM diagnosed the issue as a bad BECM (battery energy control module). Our service rep said it is a very common issue with this car and that they have a few others waiting for a replacement part. I am at month 2 waiting for my vehicle to get fixed.

My 2017 Chevy Volt has been making a clicking noise coming from the brake booster assembly since I have bought it. When your foot is released from the brake pedal, there is an audible click (3-4 times a second) inside of the cabin and I've decided to make a formal complaint as GM isn't taking the appropriate action to fix this issue. My reasoning is that this issue is not only common on the Chevy Volt, but also the Chevy Bolt as they share the exact same brake booster. For the Volt, dealers are instructed to replace the Brake Pedal Retainer - GM (39081933) and the Brake Master Cylinder - GM (84006919). This repair is often quoted in excess of $2,000 even though there is a very high likelihood of the issue returning even when the parts are replaced. For the Chevy Bolt, dealers were instructed to stop replacing the brake booster as they determined there was a software fix that could solve the issue. There was a TSB regarding this which details both the problem and the repair procedure (# [XXX]) [XXX] While GM fixed this issue on the Bolts, the Volts have the exact same issue and owners are being directed to spend $2,000+ to make a repair that won't even fix the issue. GM needs to release the software fix for the Volts so that the issue can be resolved properly. This burdens current Volt owners improperly, as GM has proven that a software release can fix this but has thus far refused to address and implement it. I was driving on the highway at speeds greater than 60mph. Traffic came to a sudden stop and the pre-crash avoidance assisted with breaking. I resumed driving. The front right tire began smoking. I pulled over, the break was locked up and the rotor and pad were damaged. Overnight it releases. I take to service center and they are unable to replicate issue. I had to replace pads and rotors. A month later it locked up again, this time while driving. I became wary of the sighs now and pulled over immediately. Had the vehicle towed to service center. Again, they are unable to determine issue. They said there are no fault codes and no physical issues with breaking system. It is unfortunate the dealer does not know how to repair cars with complex computer operated systems. I don’t know what to do, right now we are in the stage of replacing random components to see if it fixes the issue. I can’t keep throwing money at this. I hope you can apply pressure to Chevy to help. I don’t know what to do, all I know is this isn’t safe. They had a similar recall for 2018 model year volts breaks locking up. But no recall issued for 2017 model year.

If they said they had enough parts for BECM failures, they're either lying to you or they're lying to me.

BECM failure. Initially, it caused the vehicle to operate in a low propulsion state. However, it now prevents the vehicle from starting. Likewise, I have heard it has stopped the engines from working/shut down the engines while people are driving on the highway.

On Sunday night, I was driving around 65 mph on the 405 freeway to take my friend to the airport. I noticed that the car started to give a weird feedback sensation on the pedals and had started to jerk us forward. As I merged onto the two-lane on ramp to the 10 freeway, the car started to rapidly lose power and then completely died and went dark. I was unable to use the hazard lights as the car had just gone dark but then it turned back on but would not let me shift it into drive. As I was on a two-lane on-ramp with no shoulder in the dark, we just had to pray that no one would hit us. In doing research, I suspect that this was yet another BECM failure that has been repeatedly happening with this year of Chevrolet Volts. There was most recently a class-action lawsuit filed for this very issue. The car is currently at the dealership awaiting inspection but I am terrified to drive that car again if it even becomes drivable. Especially since there were no warning lights or signs on the vehicle to indicate that this could be an issue and to have it die on the freeway in the way that it did, putting my life and many other lives at risk, I am shocked that there hasn't been a recall for this issue.

At approximately 61,500 miles my Chevy Volt would not start. I had it towed to a repair facility who determined the problem was a faulty BECM (Battery Energy Control Module), but that it would still be covered by the manufacturer's warranty. So I had the vehicle towed to a dealership. The vehicle has been at the dealership for six weeks as of the time I write this, but report they have yet to diagnose the problem or offer a solution. Doing research online I have found that BECM failure is a common problem among the Chevy Volt, of all model years. And due to "supply chain disruptions" people are having to wait weeks to months for their vehicle to be repaired. Fortunately my vehicle did not fail in a dangerous location, however the BECM failure could happen randomly at any time at any mileage and appears to be a design flaw. Fortunately my vehicle is still covered by the manufacturer's warranty, but in my opinion, repair should be extended to all Chevy Volts.

Vehicle: 2017 Chevrolet Volt Purchased: March 2017, new from Quality Chevrolet, Escondido, CA I am reporting a persistent and worsening issue with the “Shift to Park” system in my 2017 Chevy Volt. The problem began approximately three months after purchase (mid-2017) and has continued to worsen over time. Initially, the issue occurred intermittently, but it now happens every time I attempt to turn off the vehicle. The vehicle fails to recognize that it is in Park, displaying a “Shift to Park” message on the dashboard even when the gear selector is correctly positioned. This prevents the car from shutting off properly and poses a safety and battery drain risk. I brought the vehicle to Quality Chevrolet for service on the following dates: June 2017 April 2018 August 2020 Despite these visits, the dealership failed to diagnose or resolve the issue. On July 9, 2025, I returned to the same dealership, and they finally diagnosed the problem as a faulty jumper harness and switch contact, quoting $586 plus tax for the repair. I requested a goodwill repair from GM, given that the issue began within the warranty period and has been ongoing for years, but my request was denied. This is a known and widespread issue affecting many GM vehicles, and I believe it represents a design or manufacturing defect that should be subject to a recall or broader investigation. I am requesting that NHTSA investigate this issue further to ensure consumer safety and accountability.

As do many other owners of Chevrolet Volts and Malibus, I have experienced the "Shift-to-Park" problem last year and again this year. The problem involves shifting to park and then shutting off the motor. The motor stops but the error message "Shift to Park to turn off engine" appears on the dashboard console. The engine has stopped, the car is in park, but the message continues. When I open the door, the beeping alert signal begins and continues. I had it repaired by the dealer last year and the 2017 Volt is back at the dealer's for the same problem again this year. There should be a recall for this widespread problem.
Jul 21, 2021
When turning off the car, after shifting to park, I get a message indicating "Shift to Park". As it is already in Park, there is nothing that can be done. I have sometimes been able to get it to go away by continually starting, shifting to drive, shifting back to park and then trying to shut the car down again. Sometimes I just don't have time to do it and have to leave the car in this state and leave the car. I doubt it could be driven as I have the key fob, but it is on and when I get back, the car is powered up. I am not sure if there are safety implications to this as I don't know the cause of this problem. I have researched on line and this is not unique to my 2017 Volt.

On December 2023 the vehicle lost power and lost control while driving speed limit 55 Mph followed by check engine light associated codes due to known issue with BCEM controller failing. June 2024 Vehicle experienced the same issue with duplicate check engine codes associated with prior issue. Dealer states the vehicle has a bad battery pack and has been there for over 8 months. Vehicle has a BECM warranty due to a law suite filed and also has a battery pack warranty from GM that was extended for 150,000 miles or 10 years.

The EGR valve failed. This caused the vehicle to have insufficient propulsion while driving. The dealer has confirmed the EGR valve is the problem. The vehicle is at the dealership. The check engine light came on. The dealer is now stating the replacement EGR valve is a $4000 part because GM stopped making the part when they discontinued the Volt. An EGR valve should cost $250-$400 not $4000. The current trade-in value of my vehicle is only $7000. I cannot get my vehicle fixed due to the cost and the vehicle is too dangerous to drive due to the power loss issues.
Feb 14, 2025
While we were driving on the freeway, we saw a check engine light and “propulsion power is reduced” message. The car began driving very roughly and we had to slow down. We had this happen once before where the car engine stopped working entirely while driving at city speeds after seeing this error earlier in the summer, so we pulled over as soon as we could. We were traveling in a remote area at the time, just before the holidays, and it was fairly cold out. The car dealer inspected the car and told us it was unsafe to drive, that we could not take it back until it was fixed, and that it was an EGR valve problem. We previously had this fixed under warranty as well for similar behavior, and the car is barely five years old with very few miles on it. It’s our only car and we have been waiting on the part for weeks now, with no response on when we’ll be able to have our car back, and no rental car that we can drive in the meantime to get to our jobs and get groceries. The part is covered under our warranty. Both times this has happened to us, we were actively driving. In the city, it was very unsafe for the engine to unexpectedly stop as we were driving because of the amount of traffic and pedestrians, and because it meant we didn’t have full control of the vehicle. On the freeway, it was very unsafe because of the speed we were going on the freeway. Knowing that our engine was at high risk of unexpectedly stopping working while driving on the freeway from the past experience in the city made it difficult to safely concentrate on pulling over and also maneuver in traffic.

After the battery runs out, the engine loses propulsion and fails to run on gas. The car completely stalls in the middle of traffic. The speed drops from 70+ mph to 0. Extremely dangerous to myself and others. The issue suddenly appeared at the end of December 2022 during a long drive. The engine check light remains on and a warning re: reduced propulsion power is displayed every time the car is turned on. Dealer is unable to fix the issue because they already have multiple cars with the same issue waiting for weeks to be repaired. Recently filed class action law suit suggests that this problem is caused by defective BCEM unit.

Three incidents in the last few weeks. My 2017 Chevy Volt today has about 84,000 miles. First incident, While driving on an interstate at about 50 mph I suddenly lose ability to accelerate. There was some beeping, dashboard turns yellow, I get a low fuel warning and I cannot accelerate. I pull over on interstate. Re-start vehicle and car restarts. Second incident, driving about 20 mph leaving a neighborhood. I have 4 passengers, all kids. The same exact error happens. I’m unable to accelerate though I’m pushing down on gas, fuel light turns yellow. Low fuel light. I pull over. I restart vehicle. Car starts normally. Car goes into shop. Chevy dealership says it’s the catalytic converter. About a week later, 3rd incident. Entering highway at about 60 mph, trying to accelerate and merge into traffic doing 70 mph. I cannot accelerate past 60 mph, I hear the beeps, fuel gauge turns yellow, low fuel warning. Check engine light turns on. Several days prior to this, I had a low propulsion error on dashboard momentarily. But it went away when I restarted vehicle. Safety of myself, passengers and other drivers were out at risk as there was no warning that I would lose ability to accelerate. There was a no fuel warning but my gas tank was mostly full.

EGR valve failed. This can cause the Volt to stall in traffic. No ETA on replacement. The situation seriously limits driving ability. Reduced propulsion and engine light came up. f3 fuse blew related to failed EGR. This is a known issue with Chevy Volts. It was checked out by dealership in Aug. They replaced fuse and basically said can only drive on electric. If turns over to gas it could cause major problems.
Feb 23, 2024
The EGR Valve on the vehicle went bad, causing the vehicle to display 'propulsion reduce' and 'engine not available' errors on the dashboard before the vehicle came to a stop while driving on an interstate. Searching this issue for the Chevrolet Volt online yields a significant amount of similar issues experienced by other Volt owners. Vehicle was inspected and repaired by a Chevrolet dealership, but seems to be a recurring issue with very limited parts supplied by GM, leading to potential of very long delays in repair time.

I am reporting a series of safety concerns regarding my 2017 Chevy Volt, which have persisted despite multiple attempts to address them with the dealership. These issues pose significant risks to my safety and that of others on the road. On January 18th, 2024, I brought my vehicle to the dealer after experiencing reduced propulsion power while driving on the highway, coupled with the illumination of the check engine light. The mechanic performed a quick inspection and used a GM scan tool to diagnose the issue, revealing the code P1E00 for the Hybrid Powertrain Control Module 2, which was cleared without a thorough investigation. I was advised to return if the issue reoccurred. Despite the reset, the problem persisted, and on February 9th, 2024, I scheduled another appointment due to my Chevy Volt's High Voltage battery charging only to 65% capacity despite indicating a full charge. Subsequently, on February 11th, 2024, the check engine light illuminated again, and on February 12th, 2024 and again on November 25th, 2025, while driving to work, both times I experienced a loss of propulsion power on the highway, placing my safety at risk and lost all power in a traveling lane of traffic. These ongoing issues with propulsion power and the high-voltage battery charging system are not only inconvenient but also potentially dangerous. Despite multiple visits to the dealership and attempts to diagnose and resolve the problem, it persists, indicating a systemic issue that requires immediate attention. The reduced propulsion power while driving on the highway, coupled with the illuminationI urge the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to investigate this matter thoroughly to ensure the safety of Chevy Volt drivers and passengers. It is imperative that General Motors addresses these issues promptly and implements appropriate measures to prevent further incidents.

While driving approximately 65 MPH on an interstate highway, the vehicle's check engine light illuminated. Very shortly after, the dashboard screen displayed the message "propulsion power reduced," and the internal combustion engine turned on. The vehicle's power was significantly reduced, almost causing an accident when another car started merging without checking their blind spot, forcing me into the left lane in front of a third vehicle that had to brake sharply to allow me to accelerate to keep up with traffic in that lane. Upon scanning the vehicle with an OBDII reader, codes P1E00, P1F06, U2603, U2604, U2605, U2606, U2617, and U2618 were present. Together, these codes indicate an issue with the Battery Energy Control Module (BECM). The vehicle is currently at a Chevrolet dealer, awaiting replacement of the BECM under the applicable warranty extension.

On 3/11/2023, I was heading home when my vehicle lost power in the middle of the freeway. Luckily, I was able to safely pull over to the side of the freeway. Since this is a plug-in hybrid, there are two gauges showing how much electric and gas is in the car. When I checked, both showed were empty; however, although I knew that I did not have much electricity in the battery, I had nearly a full tank of gas. The vehicle should have had automatically switched over to the gas but did not. After a few minutes of leaving the car off, I was able to restart the vehicle in gas mode and drive home safely. I brought in the vehicle to my local Chevy dealership to have it diagnosed. It was determine that the computer had registerd multiple faults p0030, 31, 54, 135, 403, 405, 443, 458 and 537. They also found TSB 21-NA-116. They had found that the 15 AMP fuse was blown. They had to replace the EGR valve assembly. Total time was 2 weeks to repair as they had to wait for the parts from Chevy. Per WO, parts 12346290 (Coolant) and 12691147 (Valve) were replaced. After replacement, vehicle have been running fine for the past 9 months. Prior to the engine shutting off, there was a message on the screen while driving which says "Propulsion Power is Reduced". The electric gauge was empty but the gas tank show nearly a full tank.

My EGR system caused a check engine light. P0401 This is an extremely well documented issue on Gen2 Volts, especially 2017 models. Simply searching "EGR" on the Volt subreddit or forums returns hundreds of related threads. This issue can lead to a clogged EGR valve, causing further damage. A temporary resolution is unplugging the EGR valve, which i have not yet done. But this leaves the CEL illuminated, and without daily scanner, I wouls not know if other issues arise, causing a significant safety hazard.

There is a part that fails on a lot of GM vehicles due to getting clogged (an EGR valve). It prevents the vehicle from reaching high speeds on the highway and can fail while driving (which happened to me). I could have lost control of the vehicle on the highway and crashed or gotten rear-ended. GM refuses to pay for repairs involving this part despite so many people reporting the issue that they needed to do another production run of the part after discontinuing it. I have owned the 2017 Volt since August of 2017. Late 2018 or early 2019 I started having an intermittent problem when I turned the car off. The screen showed an error message "Action required - Shift to park". The car was in park already. I would push the start button. Shift into gear and shift again into park. In the beginning that solved the problem. But the car did not fully shut down when the error message is displayed. If the door is opened, the signal that the engine is running beeps. I took it to the dealer service department . They kept the car for a day to diagnose the problem but did not get the error message. But as the problem was intermittent, it continued. I returned the car to the dealer and they said they made an adjustment that should resolve the problem. It didn't. The problem became constant and I could not shift into park. The car did not fully shut off and I couldn't lock it. I returned the car to the dealer and it was there for several days while they waited for a new shifter. It was on their EV charger full time so as to not drain the battery. The shifter was replaced in February 2019. I thought this was a random incident but found out it is not. In July 2021 the same problem returned. I called 2 dealers for an appointment and have to wait 3 weeks for an appointment. I looked online for solutions and to see if others had the same experience. I found many postings and comments with screenshots of the same error message and cars not turning off. It seems to be a defect affecting the Volt and other GM cars of the same age. I had an appointment at lunch 8/3/21 and after several tries to engage the parking gear, the car still would not turn off. I had to leave it running in the parking lot for 30 minutes and it would not lock. The car shut off normally when I returned to the office. This is not an issue of safety on the road, but the inability to turn off the car and lock it is a safety factor, especially for women.

Component or System Involved: The rear passenger-side seatbelt (right side from the driver’s view) on my 2017 Chevy Volt Premier malfunctioned. Specifically, the automatic locking retractor (ALR) mechanism failed and would not release tension, even after fully retracting the strap. The cut portion of the seatbelt is still in my possession and can be made available for inspection upon request. Safety Risk: This failure posed a serious safety risk. The seatbelt had been secured around a child car seat base, and once it locked, it would not release. After more than 30 minutes of troubleshooting — including fully retracting the belt and manually pressing the emergency release button inside the seat — it still would not disengage. The car seat base could not be repositioned or removed safely, which would have compromised the proper installation of a child safety seat. With no other option to ensure safe transport, I was forced to cut the seatbelt free. The problem has not yet been reproduced or officially diagnosed by a dealer or independent service center. I have not yet reported it to GM or visited a dealership, but I plan to do so soon. The component has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, or insurance representatives at this time. However, this closely mirrors recall 18V673000, especially since that recall affected Volt models 2018-2019 and mine is a 2017. There were no warning lamps, dashboard messages, or advance symptoms before the failure occurred. The seatbelt functioned normally until it was engaged with the car seat, at which point the retractor locked and failed to release.

EXACT SAME PROBLEM AS CURRENT 2018 CHEVROLET VOLT RECALL. BOTH OUTBOARD REAR SEATBELTS FAIL TO LOCK IN A WAY THAT A CARSEAT CAN BE INSTALLED. THIS PROBLEM WAS DISCOVERED WHILE TRYING TO INSTALL A CAR SEAT FOR THE FIRST TIME. THE MIDDLE REAR SEATBELT WORKS PERFECTLY. THE DATE LISTEN BELOW IS THE DATE THE ISSUE WAS DISCOVERED.

WHEN BUCKLING MY 5 YEAR OLD SON INTO HIS BOOSTER SEAT, THE REAR SEATBELT ALWAYS BECOMES WEDGED IN A CAVITY OF THE REAR SEAT. THIS ALSO OCCURS IF MY SON MOVES WHILE WE ARE IN TRANSIT. THIS CAUSES THE SEATBELT TO FAIL TO RETRACT PROPERLY AND THUS HE IS NOT PROPERLY SECURED. I AM AFRAID NOT ONLY FOR HIS SAFETY BECAUSE THE SEATBELT IS NOT SECURING HIS TORSO PROPERLY. ADDITIONALLY, FROM THIS OCCURRING FREQUENTLY, I AM AFRAID THAT WEAR ON THE SEATBELT (FRAY) WILL COMPROMISE THE SEATBELT MATERIAL CAUSING IT TO FAIL IF EVER IN A CRASH.

I got a warning from my car a little over a week ago (around 6/1, unsure of exact date) that I needed to service the battery charging system, but then the check engine indicator light shut off and so did the warning light. The hybrid battery took a charge with no issues after that. Then, I left work the evening of 6/9 and drove home. On my way home, the check engine light came back on, followed by warnings that I needed to shift to park. Before I could pull over, my car stopped moving. Cars had to stop abruptly behind me and navigate around me into incoming traffic. I shifted to park, then tried to turn my car off and on again. I tried to switch between the gas engine and the battery, I tried to move my vehicle in any way. I couldn't get it into neutral to push it out of traffic. I turned on my hazard lights and a person came out from his house to assist in directing traffic away from my car for about an hour while I waited for a tow truck to arrive. The kind bystander who directed traffic and I were very concerned about a car accident happening due to my stopped vehicle. A police officer stopped by to check on us and try and get my vehicle into neutral but he was unable and said he was on his way to a 911 dispatch so he did not write a report of any kind that I could see. He told me the vehicle placement was not safe and I agreed with him. The tow truck came as he was leaving. The dealership I sent my car to said it is likely a short circuit in the 12v battery but I know the BECM in the Chevy Volt is known to cause similar behavior. Dealership refused to service the BECM when asked about it.

This car has a failed EGR valve which first became evident in March of 2024. There are no parts available, this in an emissions issue but the failure causes blown fuses which can cause the car to completely stop running which is a safety issue. Reduced propulsion is a symptom which is dangerous and this has been confirmed by three Chevy dealerships. I have had the EGR valve cleaned to the tune of $1200, have a deposit on a new valve which doesn't seem to exist for $850. There were no other messages before the failure. I am driving the car with the EGR valve disconnected, mostly on the battery power but no end is in sight to this problem.

Crash: 1
I had the BECM fail as part of many 2017 volts with this issue at around 40K miles. This failure has caused multiple near accidents with immediately losing power at highway speeds. The last time this happened (after the BECM was replaced) was a couple of weeks ago. They said the reason for the failure was a programming issue, and they have updated it. It is flabbergasting to me that a programming issue can result in such a dangerous result. The car reduced propulsion on the highway and got stuck on the offramp while trying to pull over on the busy highway. Not only were we left stranded on the highway with me being 8 and a half months pregnant, but my husband almost got into an accident twice while trying to make it over safely. Chevy needs to be accountable for these significant failures that seem to continuously happen to Chevy Volts. It's not just the BECM - they have multiple things that are causing extremely dangerous results. When they replaced the BECM they also replaced the 12V (with significant out of pocket cost to us) and leaving us with no vehicle for a long time. We bought a new car right after this incredibly scary incident.

WHEN ATTEMPTING TO TURN OFF THE VEHICLE A WARNING AND ALARM PERIODICALLY COMES UP THAT THE VEHICLE CAN NOT BE TURNED OFF BECAUSE IT NEEDS TO BE SHIFTED INTO PARK EVEN THOUGH IT IS ALREADY IN PARK IT SOMEHOW DOES NOT RECOGNIZE THIS AND PREVENTS THE VEHICLE FROM BEING TURNED OFF. RESTARTING AND SHUTTING BACK DOWN WILL EVENTUALLY CLEAR THE ISSUE OR SOMETIMES JUST "TAPPING" THE SHIFTER IN THE DIRECTION OF PARK SEEMS TO CLEAR THE ALARM

I was driving in stop and go traffic on a relatively busy road when I was cut off. I braked hard to avoid a collision. Immediately afterwards, the car would not respond to the accelerator and would not go forward. I was in the middle of the road and the car would not respond. It could have caused an accident. I put the car into park and then back into drive and it seemed to work again. But I am now worried about the car.

Unknown My car has been accelerating and decelerating on it’s own while I’m driving.I got it checked with Fix Finder and states that my EGR Valve and ABS System failed. I brought it to a mechanic for a repair and I was told that the valve was unplugged so they plugged it back in and cleaned it , and said that everything was fine it said it might also be the cause of the failed ABS System but everything looks fine. After I got it fixed, it’s doing the same again and it’s worse this time. The car is accelerating on it’s own faster than what it did but the dashboard is saying 0mph. I was driving in the highway when it happened and it’s scary so I had to pull over.

The engine light starts blinking and telling me propulsion power reduced, and then I cannot use the cruise control after that turns on, and it starts losing power, driving on I 70 after work all of a sudden it turned on and wet from going 76 miles an hour to 52 on highway I 70 where the speed limit was 75. This problem was a recall problem which was fixed and now is happening again on the same part and having the same problems.

This vehicle has a very dangerous malfunction. There was no power when I tried to move out of the way of an out-of-control semi truck while driving on the highway by pressing the pedal. I made every effort to maneuver because I was terrified. But because of the power outage, I could have died. This is really worrying, and I hope you can address the issue raised by Chevy so that someone else might be spared and so that future generations of electric cars are constructed to a standard that includes safety. Thank you.

The high-voltage heater control module (also known as the PTC coolant heater / K10 heater module) has failed. This component controls cabin heat and windshield defrost when the vehicle operates in electric mode. The authorized Chevrolet dealer diagnosed the issue, confirmed the failure, and attempted to order the correct GM part. GM informed the dealer that the part is no longer manufactured or available through GM channels. As a result, there is currently no GM-approved repair path. This failure prevents the vehicle from providing windshield defrost while operating in EV mode, which is required for safe winter visibility. I live in New Hampshire, where winter temperatures routinely require functioning cabin heat and defrost for safe operation and compliance with state visibility laws. Because this is a high-voltage thermal management component, there is no safe aftermarket repair option. The inability to obtain an OEM replacement part for a safety-related system prevents the vehicle from operating safely in intended EV mode.

THE HMI (HUMAN MACHINE INTERFACE) MODULE, A PRIMARY COMPONENT OF THE VEHICLE'S IN-CABIN COMPUTER SYSTEM, CAN FAIL IN A 2017 CHEVROLET VOLT WHILE THE CAR IS AT REST OR IN MOTION RESULTING IN THE INABILITY TO ACCESS OR USE THE VEHICLE'S INSTALLED BACK-UP CAMERA. THE 2017 CHEVROLET VOLT HAS VERY POOR REAR VISIBILITY WITHOUT A BACK-UP CAMERA. IF THE DRIVER IS UNABLE TO SEE CLEARLY BEHIND THE VEHICLE, AN ACCIDENT IS MORE LIKELY TO OCCUR.

I am submitting this complaint regarding a recurring and potentially hazardous issue in my Chevrolet Volt 2017.The vehicle frequently displays a “Shift to Park” warning message even when the gear shifter is correctly in the Park position. This malfunction prevents the car from shutting off properly, posing both safety and operational concerns. This issue is widely reported among Chevrolet Volt owners, and General Motors has acknowledged it in Technical Service Bulletin (TSB 19-NA-206). Despite this, no formal recall has been issued to ensure a permanent solution for affected drivers. My Volt currently has 138000miles, and although it is outside of the Voltec Warranty period, this is clearly a manufacturer defect—not a result of normal wear and tear. The problem affects the safe operation of the vehicle and may lead to battery drain, inability to power down the car, and driver confusion. I strongly urge the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to investigate this issue and consider initiating a recall to protect drivers and ensure accountability. Thank you for your time and attention to this matter.

Been having issues with the dealership sierra chevy of monrovia. Brake fluid light came on. My car has been at the dealer for over two months now in counting. Closer to 3 months. First time was in July 24, 2024 for a check engine light. Fast forward to today Nov 19th, 2025. The car has been back at the dealer for the same issue the brake fluid light. Its now almost past 2 weeks. I have talked to the service manager and advisor a week ago. they told me they are having issues finding where the leak is coming from after having my vehicle there the past month. So I told them it was fine for the mechanic to drive the vehicle and figure it out. Now its almost another week and the service manager and advisor are not responding to my calls and texts. Left the service manager 2 voicemails already. Please help me get my car fixed and back to me. Service manager told me he would help me out with a rental since its a reoccurring issues . No communication from the dealership at all. No one is responding. After they claim to have fixed my vehicle the issue came back in less than a week. Dropped my car at the dealership on Nov 6th, 2024. Scared my vehicle's brakes will fail! Its still under warranty. Dont want the car back till its fixed properly. Just want my vehicle to be fixed

HOWEVER, IT IS DIFFICULT TO HAVE CONFIDENCE IN THE BRAKING SYSTEM WHILE THIS SOUND PERSISTS AND IT IS A CONSTANT DISTRACTION WHILE DRIVING. PLUS, THE ABILITY TO SELL OR TRADE THE VEHICLE IN THIS CONDITION IS DIMINISHED. ELIMINATION OF THE NOISE INVOLVES COSTLY REMOVAL AND REPLACEMENT OF THE BRAKE BOOSTER ASSY. SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE

Several times since I purchased the car in Jan 2022, the left and/or right front brakes have dragged without brake pedal actuation while I was driving in surface street traffic, typically with speed limits of 25 to 35 mph. This has resulted in overheating of the brake caliper, rotor, and wheel. Typically the car can be driven again without issue after two hours of cool-off time. This phenomenon has occurred during both battery/electric and gasoline engine operation of the plug-in hybrid car. There are no instrument indications of a brake malfunction when it happens. It first becomes perceptible as a pulsation through the steering wheel and requires increased throttle pedal pressure to maintain speed. I brought the car to my local Chevrolet dealer after the first two of these incidents. Their first recommendation was a new set of tires to remove the influence of one mismatched tire. The new tires did not resolve the issue, and the dealer has not performed any other corrective action beyond a recommendation to replace calipers and rotors. Due to the intermittent nature of the failure and the fact that it affects both of the front brakes, I believe this is an ABS system issue and not a caliper/rotor issue, and I have not replaced those parts yet. The car's adaptive cruise control does not work properly. It almost always fails to set and shows "Adaptive Cruise Temporarily Unavailable" regardless of road conditions. This condition is intermittent and is not reproducible on demand. This condition is dangerous because it overheats the brake, wheel, and steering components. The heat may have damaged the wheel bearing, steering components, and CV joints. The heat also creates a risk of sudden wheel and/or tire failure while driving. The unexpected application of the brakes affects vehicle response to throttle and steering inputs, and has the potential to reduce driver control of the vehicle.

Late 2021 I noticed a strange noise and a slight stutter in my breaks that would only happen at the end of the breaking motion just before the car would completely stop. The sound and stutter, felt as though a clutch was trying to engaged. I scheduled a service appointment in January to have my tire replaced and car checked. The stabilitrack light came on while I was on vacation and also asked the dealership to check the stabilitrack. The dealership replaced my tires and inspected my car, but found nothing wrong with it. The tested the car and it appeared to be working just fine. I drove around another couple months with no incident. And then the notice and stutter came back, however it was intermittent. The stutter and noise slowly got worse and worse, but stilled continued to be an intermittent issue. On August 1st, while driving to work, my breaks completely failed and I almost got into an accident. I was pulling away from a red that just turned green. There was a red light ahead, I barely got up to 30-35mph before I started cruising towards the light. Started to press down on the breaks to stop and the pedal went straight to the floorboard with resistance and the breaks did not engage. I pumped the breaks frantically several times, with no change and quickly swerved and made a last minute right turn to avoid traffic. I continued to pump the breaks until it eventually did engage. I took the car to the dealership to have it serviced and inspected again, and was told it was the master cylinder that had failed. After it got replaced it was about another 2 weeks before I started to experience a similar issue again.

On 2 difference occasions over the past 3 weeks, my car has malfunctioned while I was driving. There were no warning lamps, messages or other symptoms prior to this. All of the lights on the dash came on, the power steering went out, the brakes would not work properly and I could not accelerate. I had my child in the car and we narrowly avoided being hit by other cars both times since I couldn't control the vehicle. I couldn't even power the car down initially but was finally able to turn it off and back on and function resumed after several cycles. I was driving on electric battery that time. The first time, the dealership stated that the following codes were present: P1e00 and P16BA. They replaced the g1 a/c compressor. The incident occurred again a week later when I was driving on gas. At that time, there were history U codes present for every module, per the technician but no current codes to identify the problem. The problem has not been able to be reproduced since. The 2nd incident occurred out of state and my car was towed back to Texas where I live. The dealership there refused to investigate the incidents since they couldn't reproduce them and there were no current codes showing. It has subsequently been towed to a different dealership where they are still trying to identify the issue. I contacted General Motors and was contacted by a rep who escalated the issue. The next rep escalated it again greater than 48 hours ago and I have received no further contact from GM. The 2nd rep informed me that since the dealership that it was originally at says that it's safe to drive that they can't do anything. This car is NOT safe to drive.

THE CRUISE CONTROL DOES NOT WORK EVERY SO OFTEN. IT SEEMS TO HAPPEN WHEN I USE A LOT OF THE STEERING CONTROL TO INCREASE AND DECREASE THE SPEED. IT'S I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP 2 TIMES AND THEY CAN'T FIND THE PROBLEM. I DON'T HAVE SPECIFIC DATES WHEN THIS HAPPENED BUT IT HAPPENS ENOUGH. OTHER THINGS THAT HAPPENS ARE 1) THE VOLT HAS A CHARGE SETTING THAT OPTIMIZE TO START CHARGE DELAY DEPENDING ON WHEN YOU SCHEDULE WHEN YOU PLAN TO LEAVE SO THE CAR WILL NOT BE LEFT FULLY CHARGE FOR A LONG TIME. HOWEVER, THE ESTIMATED CHARGE TIME IS COMPLETELY OFF NOW. IT SEEMS TO THINK IT WILL TAKE 12 MORE HOURS TO CHARGE. THEREFORE, THE CAR WOULD START CHARGING A FEW HOURS EARLIER THAN IT SHOULD. 2) THE AUDIO SYSTEM CONNECTED TO THE SMARTPHONE IS VERY BUGGY. SOMETIMES THE DISPLAY SHOWS MUSIC IS PLAYING BUT NO AUDIO.

MY 2017 CHEVY VOLT HAS AN ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL PROBLEM . IT WILL ONLY WORK WHEN IT WANTS TO BUT WHAT MAKE IT SO DANGEROUS IS THAT IF YOU GET IT TO ENGAGE IT WILL RANDOMLY AND WITHOUT ANY WARNING DISENGAGE ITSELF. IF YOU ARE USING THE 2017 VOLT IN THE LOW GEAR MODE AND THIS HAPPENS THE CAR WILL RAPIDLY DECELERATE WHICH IS VERY DANGEROUS AND HAS ALMOST CAUSE THE PEOPLE BEHIND ME TO RUN INTO ME. THESE TWO ISSUES ARE CLEARLY MANUFACTURER DEFECTS AS BOTH CARS WERE BOUGHT NEW AND WITHIN A MONTH OF EACH OTHER. I WILL ENTER THIS FOR MY OTHER VIN NUMBER AS WELL. THESE HAVE BEEN ONGOING ISSUES THAT WE ARE HAVING TO SPEND MONEY TO CORRECT AND THERE ARE MANY REPORTS OF THESE BEING ISSUES, YET THERE IS NO RECALL. THE FIRST TIME, I ENGAGED THE APA FEATURE TO ASSIST WITH PARALLEL PARKING, I FOLLOWED THE INSTRUCTIONS ON THE DASHBOARD. AFTER COMING TO A COMPLETE STOP, I FOLLOWED THE DIRECTION TO SHIFT THE CAR INTO REVERSE. THE MOMENT I COMPLETED THE SHIFT AND I LIFTED BY FOOT FROM THE BRAKE, THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED UNEXPECTEDLY IN REVERSE AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED. THE STEERING WHEEL TURNED TO THE RIGHT, AND THE CAR CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE OUT OF CONTROL UNTIL IT HAD JUMPED THE CURB AND SIDESWIPED A TELEPHONE POLE. I HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO A CHEVY DEALER AND FILED A CLAIM FOR PRODUCT DEFECT WITH GENERAL MOTORS. GENERAL MOTORS HAS SUBSEQUENTLY DECLINED THE CLAIM.

THIS CAUSED A LACK OF CONTROL (OBVIOUSLY) IN THE FORWARD DIRECTION, CAUSING AN EXTREME HAZARD ON THE FREEWAY. I AM AN EXPERIENCED DRIVER: MAKE NO MISTAKE, THIS WAS A SERIOUS MANUFACTURE'S ERROR. I CHECKED, NO PARKING BRAKE, THE CAR WAS IN DRIVE GEAR, I HAD BOTH ELECTRIC RANGE AND OVER 7/8 TANK OF GAS SHOWING A GAS RANGE OF 360 MILES - AND I HAD JUST DRIVEN 60 MILES. THERE WAS NO BRAKE SMELL, AS I DID NOT NEED TO APPLY THE BRAKE BECAUSE THE ENGINE GAVE NO PROPULSION. MY HAND WAS OFF THE REGEN SWITCH. Currently, two two issues are ongoing with my 2017 Chevrolet Volt Premier. I took my Volt to Epic Chevrolet in Sacramento, CA, on August 9, 2024, because the "Propulsion Power Is Reduced" warning and the "Service Park Assist System" warning came on with the "Check Engine" light. After diagnosis I was informed that the "EGR Valve" has failed; however, Chevrolet cannot procure the EGR Valve to repair my Volt and it is now October 14. I have been coordinating with Chevrolet Customer Assistance who continue to inform me that they are looking for the part but cannot provide it - apparently this part has been redesigned. This is the third time in 12 months that the Volt has been in for repair, all under warranty, for charging and propulsion related issues. On August 23, 2023, the Volt was in the shop for 15 days getting the "Battery Energy Control Module" replaced under warranty. On [XXX], one week after being repaired, my car would not start and had to be towed. That time the "Hybrid Battery Disconnect Relay Assembly" failed and was in the shop for 14 days, again repaired under warranty. This time, my car has been in the shop for 66 days waiting for an EGR Valve that, per Epic Chevrolet, is covered under warranty. It is unacceptable for Chevrolet to warranty its cars but not have the parts to perform the repair and let owners continue to pay loans on a car, insure a car, and have financial hardships for not having a car. I am not confident that, once fixed, something else will not go wrong. Plus, I was quoted $1,160 to fix the safety issue of the Parking Collision Warning. The exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve failure light illuminated, and the vehicle started decelerating. The contact pulled over to the side of the road and restarted the vehicle. The contact continued to drive at slower speeds. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the propulsion power was reduced. The contact was informed that the battery energy control module needed to be replaced. The dealer later found upon further inspection that the EGR valve needed to be replaced but was not replaced. The contact stated that after having the repair completed the failure occurred approximately 3 times. The vehicle had not been returned to the dealer to be diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 111,722.

P1E00 error code resulted in the propulsion system being reduced and climate controls turned off. My wife, driving at the time in a thunderstorm, lost the ability to drive the speed of traffic and also her windshield completely fogging up where she could not see. She could have been killed in this scenario in a number of ways. Took it to the dealer where GM apparently has no spare parts available for months??? Parts at fault are related to the EGR valve and cooler. CEL light came on and off for a few days prior. Failed to be able to pull the error code because it would go off.

I took my car to Platinum Chevrolet in Santa Rosa, Ca. They did a checkup and claimed that both of the spindle axle washers were cracked and should be replaced ASAP. They told me that it could be very dangerous if I continued to drive the car without repair. They told me that this flaw was quite common on Chevy Volts. I researched on the internet and this flaw is reported quite often and is said to be dangerous. There is no recall for this flaw. If this flaw is very dangerous, WHY is there no recall?

On [XXX] while traveling at highway speed my Chevrolet volt abruptly lost propulsion and an alert was displayed to pull over and turn car off. I was on [XXX] in California a 4 lane highway forced to cross 3 lanes of traffic at an exceptionally slow speed in heavy traffic. It is a miracle a crash did not occur. Fortunately other drivers were aware and able to stop or quickly change lanes. AAA towed directly to Stewart Chevrolet in Colma Ca. It was diagnosed and I was advised it is under warranty HOWEVER parts are on back order. Today [XXX] ~ the car still has not been repaired and I have been advised parts will not ship until September 2024. This is both dangerous and unacceptable. Chest Clip, Buckle, Harness,Tether, Lower Anchor (on car seat or vehicle)
1 complaint
This seat is impossible to install safely in most vehicles. I have installed it into 4-5 different vehicles including cars, trucks, and SUVs. In every case but one it was impossible to install tightly enough so that it didn't move at least 3-4 inches freely. The one case where I could install it tightly I could lean the seat back to "suck it down" and then lean the seat forward again. This is not possible in most vehicles. The LATCH system binds and cannot be pulled tight by one person, it requires two adults. Installing with a seat belt is seriously dangerous as the back frame binds the seat belt and does not allow it to be pulled tight. And the cherry on top is that the five point harness doesn't stay tight. It creeps loose over the span of 10 or so minutes. We actually had to teach our son to pull it tight on longer road trips. I was shocked when we got a new car seat and had it installed safely and securely in a matter of minutes. This one takes at least an hour every time of wiggling and cajoling into place. These seats are junk and should be pulled from the market.

Consistent BCEM failure with volt. Power Reduced even if battery has full charge and gas is in tank. Forward Collision made unavailable without reason whilst driving. I rely on the forward collision system while driving at night in my area because of drivers cutting each other off constantly, so losing this feature without knowing why it failed feels unsafe to me. Forward collision would also activate when no vehicle is infront of me causing the car to suddenly stop and jerk on the road. Propulsion power is reduced is an extremely common occurrence in my volt. It happens randomly while driving and even while charging. When I'm on the highway the car would slow down when the warning came on; even with cars right behind me. I'm scared one day the car's system will cause an accident because of it's unpredictability. Regular maintenance has been performed and no issues have been found. The problem continues to persist.

On 2 separate time periods, "propulsion power reduced" message appears on dash: - 1st incident in November 2022, car would not move after powering off the vehicle. After sitting idle for a week, decided to retry, and car seemed to work normally. Took it in to Chevy service, they replaced the BECM. Car worked fine after this - 2nd incident in November 2023, again 'propulsion power reduced' message appeared. This time, however, car would suddenly cut off gas engine (even at highway speed), switching to 100% battery mode, and displaying 'Engine not available' on dashboard. Fuel level indicator would immediately display 'LOW' (even though gas tank was full). Reduced acceleration on battery mode. Car is now in same service center awaiting fix for the past month. Was quite an unsafe situation, especially at highway speeds, and especially given the fact that the battery also may have been at a low state of charge, risking complete vehicle breakdown. Coupled with both of these incidents, the cruise control intermittently shuts off, displaying 'Cruise control unavailable'. Car is lightly utilized, with just over 30k miles on the odometer to date. Additionally, the car is kept in a mild climate (coastal southern california) and parked in a covered spot shielded from sun and temperature extremes.

While driving after the electric battery is used and switches over to gas, I have been getting the check engine, ABS, steering, parking, and brake lights. I have lost power steering, lost the speedometer, lost fuel range, lost stabilitrak, it has randomly turned on the emergency brake while all these other things are happening, It also has said “shift to park”, propulsion power reduced. I have taken it to the dealer and they read some of the codes but say they can’t find anything wrong and they need to be able to reproduce the problem to find it. I lost all propulsion and pulled over and turned it off and it stopped with a “clunk.” Then I turn it back on and just the check engine light is on. I’m very afraid to drive it but with the lack of vehicles available to buy and the dealer not knowing how to fix it I don’t know what to do.

The vehicle stopped on its own without obstacles. The vehicle fails to stop under adaptive cruse control and you have to disengage to stop or it will hit the car in front. When stepping on break during adaptive cruse it lurching forward before breaking takes over causing a hazzard. When you shif to park it doesn't register and will kill battery. Adaptive cruse does not keep it centered in clearly marked lanes.

While using one pedal driving the brake lights do not engage unless brake pedal is used. This is a known issue by the company and was fixed in later models due to it being a problem. After speaking to the company I was advised to go to the dealer who informed me that the company has not offered any sort of update or repair option. If it was not deemed an issue why then did the company fix the issue in later models of the same vehicle? I have had many instances of very close calls with other vehicles. I truly believe if the company didn't believe it was an issue why then was it changed?

My car had the Shift to Park and Battery Control Module go out while on a family trip with the family in the car, on the highway. The car was in the left lane of 2 lanes on the highway with no propulsion or way to move it except to push push the car off the side of the highway. Thankfully some people stopped to help. My car had stopped with no way of moving on a 55 mph 2 lane highway. We were at risk of cars not seeing my hazards and hitting us from behind. We had to push the car across the right lane to get it off the road. We had two cars stop to help direct traffic away from us while we pushed it to safety. But when we were on the side of the road, we were stranded in 100 degree heat along side a busy highway and the car was not able to use the HVAC because of the issue. This is a known issue and has been for years. A google search of VOLT Shift to Park Battery Control Module will result in THOUSANDS of complaints. It has become general knowledge that if you own this model, you WILL have this issue. They ALL will, it's just a matter of WHEN. It can happen at 30,000 miles or in my case, 111,000 miles. Chevrolet knows this as well as the dealerships. I have read many other stories of people being left stranded because of this. Chevy covers it under warranty. But my car was 11,000 mile past warranty. So I had to pay full price. Every dealership I called to see if they had the part to fix my car said that they didn't have the part AND they had 1 or more of my type of car in their dealership currently with this issue at any given time FOR YEARS. Thankfully since my car wasn't in a wreck, there was no police or insurance paperwork filed. Once the shift to park issue happened while I was driving and we were stranded, the check engine light came on. It was not on when I started the trip up until the car died. Then the check engine light came on.

WE OWN TWO 2017 CHEVY VOLTS. WHEN MERGING ONTO THE HIGHWAY, I PRESSED THE ACCELERATOR, BUT THERE WAS A SIGNIFICANT LAG TO GET UP TO HIGHWAY SPEEDS. WITH THE WHEELS BEING POWERED BY THE ELECTRIC ENGINE, THE RESPONSE HAD ALWAYS BEEN INSTANT, UNTIL TODAY. AFTER ARRIVING AT MY DESTINATION, I TURNED MY CAR OFF AND BACK ON, BUT THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND THE DASH READ "SHIFT TO PARK," EVEN THOUGH THE CAR WAS IN PARK.I TURNED THE CAR OFF AND ON AGAIN, AND THIS TIME I WAS ABLE TO SHIFT THE CAR TO DRIVE, BUT THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT REMAINED ON. THE ACCELERATOR DID NOT PROPEL THE CAR AND THE STEERING WHEEL WAS LOCKED. I AGAIN SHIFTED TO PARK AND TURNED OFF THE CAR. I WAITED A FEW MINUTES AND STARTED THE CAR BACK UP, AND THE FUEL ENGINE TURNED ON THIS TIME, BUT I RECEIVED A MESSAGE SAYING THE CAR WAS NOT CHARGING. I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE IT, BUT THE ENGINE WOULD NOT SHUT OFF, AS IT USUALLY DOES AFTER THE BATTERIES ARE SUFFICIENTLY CHARGED. I DROVE ABOUT 3 MILES ON SURFACE STREETS AND THE FUEL ENGINE REMAINED ON THE ENTIRE TIME. THERE WAS A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF LAG IN RESPONSE TIME BETWEEN PRESSING THE ACCELERATOR AND THE BATTERIES CHARGING UP ENOUGH TO PROPEL THE CAR, CAUSING AN UNSAFE RESPONSE TIME IN MERELY GETTING THE VEHICLE GOING AFTER STOPPING AT A LIGHT AND TURNING ONTO A NEW STREET.

I HAVE HAD 3 BLOWOUT AND ONE MORE TIRE THAT HAS HAD SIDE WALL DAMAGE AND HAD TO BE REPLACED. THE CAR HAS 29,289 MILES ON IT. THE 1ST BLOW OUT WAS AT JUST OVER 7,000 MILES. AFTER THE 2ND BLOW OUT ON THE ORIGINAL TIRES AND BEING STRANDED WITHOUT A SPARE TIRE. WHICH MAKES ME WAIT HOURS FOR A TOW TRUCK. I PURCHASE BRIDGESTONE DRIVE GUARD RUN FLAT TIRES. I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE 2 MORE OF THESE ONE WAS A BLOW OUT AND THE OTHER WAS SIDE WALL DAMAGE IT WAS FOUND WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS GETTING A PUNCTURE FLAT FIX. I THOUGHT THE STIFFER SIDEWALL OF THE RUN FLAT TIRE WOULD HELP BUT IT HAS NOT. I BELIEVE THAT THE 3,500 LBS WEIGHT OF THE VEHICLE COMBINED WITH 17 RIMS AND 50 SERIES LOW PROFILE TIRES IS CAUSING THE SIDE WALL OF THE TIRES TO BE CUT BY THE METAL RIM WHEN CHUCK HOLES ARE HIT. I'VE BEEN DRIVE 42 YEARS AND HAVE NEVER HAD A CHUCK HOLE CUT A TIRE LET ALONE 4 TIRES IN 22,000 MILES. THESE DAMAGED SIDE WALLS HAVE ALL BEEN ON CITY STREETS IN NORTH EASTERN OHIO AKRON, AND CLEVELAND AREA. THE SAME STREETS I'VE DRIVEN CARS ON FOR THE PAST 29 YEARS WITHOUT THIS ISSUE. THIS CAR IS BASICALLY A CHEVY CRUZ WITH 700LBS MORE WEIGHT DUE TO THE BATTERIES. THE CRUZ HAS 15 IN WHEELS, 16 IN WHEELS. AND 17 IN WHEELS. I BELIEVE THE ADDITIONAL WEIGHT 700 LBS COMBINED WITH THE SHORT 205/50/17 SIDE WALL TIRE .. THE CRUZ'S USES 215/50/17 TIRES IS THE CAUSE OF ALL THESE TIRE FAILURES. I DO NOT HAVE THE TIRE INVOICES WITH ME NOW TO VALIDATE THESE CLAIMS BUT I CAN PROVIDE THEM AT A LATER DATE. SHOULD YOU REQUIRE THEM.

ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL UNAVAILABLE RANDOMLY OCCURS WHILE DRIVING USING ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL. LIKE OTHERS, INCLUDING THE INCIDENT IN RANCHO CUCOMONGA, CA ON THE SAME DAY, APRIL 25TH, I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AT HIGH SPEED. I WAS IN THE CARPOOL LANE ON THE 210 FREEWAY. I THINK I ALSO WAS TOLD TO PUT THE CAR IN PARK. I LOST THE ABILITY TO ACCELERATE ON AT A VERY DANGEROUS TIME, WHILE I WAS THE FURTHEST TO THE LEFT IN THE LATE AFTERNOON. MIRACULOUSLY, THERE WAS ONLY 1 CAR QUITE FAR BEHIND ME. SO, AFTER DECELERATION WAS FORCED UPON MY CAR, I BEGAN TO STEER THE CAR TO THE RIGHT THROUGH 5 LANES - ONE OF THE WIDEST PARTS OF THE HIGHWAY AT THAT POINT. HERE IS WHAT I NOW THINK. I HAVE BEEN THROUGH LOSS OF POWER IN MY 2014 VOLT. I HAD ACCIDENTALLY TURNED IT OFF WHILE BEING ON THE HIGHWAY. THEY FIXED THAT DESIGN FLAW IN THIS 2017 MODEL. I HAVE SHARED MY THEORY WITH GM. GM/CHEVY HAS 3-WAY CALLED ME WITH THE "STOLEN VEHICLES DEPT". THEY AGGRESSIVELY DESCRIBE HOW THEY WON'T ISSUE A SLOW-DOWN THROUGH THE ON-STAR UNLESS THEY HAVE A REQUEST THROUGH POLICE, THE POLICE ARE BEHIND, THE LIGHTS BLINK, ETC. BUT, THEY'RE RELUCTANT TO SHARE WHAT HAPPENS NEXT. THEY'VE BEEN RELUCTANT TO SHARE HOW THEY TRACK YOUR VEHICLE THROUGH THE VIN AND GPS TRACKING. THEY'RE RELUCTANT TO SHARE THAT THIS SYSTEM CAN BE HACKED. IT IS EVIDENT THAT MUCH CAN GO WRONG ONCE THE ABILITY TO CONTROL YOUR CAR IS PLACED IN OTHER'S HANDS -- WHO AREN'T IN THE CAR DRIVING IT. THE DEALERSHIP COULD SEE THE CODE OF THE SLOW-DOWN. OF COURSE THEY WERE SURPRISED. THIS WASN'T JUST A "FAILURE". THIS IS A "FEATURE" IN THE CAR...BUT SOMEONE ELSE USED IT WITHOUT OUR PERMISSION. I WANT THE ON-STAR CONTROL DISABLED IN MY CAR!!! IT COULD HAVE KILLED MY DAUGHTER AND ME. IT COULD HAVE KILLED THE OTHERS WHO REPORTED A SIMILAR SITUATION.

NOW, THE VEHICLE WILL (MORE TIMES THAN NOT) COMPLETELY CROSS THE TIRES WELL OVER THE PAINTED LINE, TRAVELING SEVERAL TENS OF YARDS BEFORE ONLY SLIGHTLY CORRECTING ITS DIRECTION BACK TOWARDS THE LANE. IN A BEST CASE SCENARIO, VEHICLE SYSTEM WILL BEGIN CORRECTING ITSELF APPROXIMATELY JUST AS THE FRONT TIRE MAKES CONTACT WITH THE LANE BOUNDARY LINES. THIS HAS BEEN OBSERVED IN LANES OF VARYING WIDTH AND CONFIRMED BY THE SERVICING DEALERSHIP. FURTHER, SYSTEM IS INCONSISTENT IN ITS DETERMINATION AND "CORRECTION" LANE BOUNDARIES, SOMETIMES CROSSING THE LEFT LANE LINE ENTIRELY THEN BARELY TOUCHING THE RIDE SIDE LANE, OR VICE VERSA. SYSTEM HAS ALSO BEEN APPARENTLY LESS SENSITIVE IN READING THE LINES AS THE INSTRUMENT PANEL INDICATOR WILL NOT LIGHT UP INDICATING THAT IT RECOGNIZES LANES, EVEN THOUGH LANES ARE CLEARLY AND BRIGHTLY PAINTED AND ILLUMINATED BY EITHER HEADLIGHTS, STREET LIGHTS OR SUNLIGHT. AS THIS VEHICLE IS A COMPLETE DRIVE-BY-WIRE SYSTEM (BRAKES, STEERING, AND THROTTLE HAVE NO MECHANICAL CONNECTION TO DRIVER'S INPUTS), I HAVE SERIOUS CONCERNS WITH REGARDS TO THE SENSORS CAPABILITIES IN ACCIDENT AVOIDANCE AND FEEL THAT IN AN EMERGENCY SITUATION, THE SYSTEM WILL FAIL TO OPERATE AS PROMOTED AND PROMISED BY THE MANUFACTURE. THIS WOULD BE ACCEPTABLE IF THIS PERFORMANCE WAS SIMILAR OR CONSISTENT TO PERFORMANCE FROM INITIAL OPERATION, HOWEVER, THE OEM HAS EFFECTIVELY AND DRAMATICALLY CHANGING THE VEHICLE'S DRIVING DYNAMIC AND SAFETY FUNCTION THAT I (AND ANY REASONABLE DRIVER) HAVE BECOME COMFORTABLE WITH AS A DRIVER, WITHOUT MY CONSENT.

THE CAR LITERALLY JUST STOPPED WORKING AS I WAS TURNING ON A BUSY ROAD, SO I WAS STUCK RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD WITH CARS NEARLY SMASHING INTO THE BACK OF ME. THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED UP. THE ACCELERATOR STOPPED WORKING. I COULDN'T TURN IT OFF OR ON- IT WAS KIND ON JUST STUCK IN AN ALTERNATE MODE. THERE WAS AN ORANGE ENGINE SYMBOL THAT WAS LIT UP AND IT KEPT SAYING "SHIFT TO PARK" BUT I WOULD SHIFT AND NOTHING WOULD HAPPEN. I COULDN'T PUT IT IN NEUTRAL SO I COULD PUSH IT TO A SAFER LOCATION. NOTHING. THE TECHNICIAN ON THE PHONE DIDN'T KNOW WHAT WAS WRONG WITH IT, BUT SOMEONE WHO STOPPED TO HELP SAID HE USED TO WORK ON THESE CARS AND SAID IT HAPPENS QUITE OFTEN AND IT THERE WAS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING I COULD HAVE DONE TO FIX IT (I THOUGHT I REMEMBER HIM SAYING SOMETHING ABOUT AN ENGINE SWITCH PROBLEM, BUT I WAS SO FRAZZLED I WASN'T REALLY LISTENING TO HIM) . IF THIS HAD HAPPENED ON A HIGHWAY I COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED. I DON'T KNOW HOW THESE CARS HAVE NO BEEN RECALLED.

THIS ELECTRIC CAR HAS REGENERATIVE BRAKING. BESIDES BEING IN THE REGULAR BRAKING, THERE IS A PURE REGENERATIVE BRAKING PADDLE ON THE STEERING WHEEL. BUT WHEN YOU USE THIS BRAKE, THE BRAKE LIGHTS TO NOT TURN ON. THIS IS A MAJOR HAZARD AS I USE THIS BRAKE ALL THE TIME AND CARS BEHIND ME DO NOT KNOW I AM BRAKING AND HAVE ALMOST REAR ENDED ME. CHEVY DEALER SAYS THAT IS THE WAY IT IS DESIGNED AND IS FUNCTIONING PERFECTLY. WHY HAS THIS BEEN APPROVED TO DESIGN A BRAKING SYSTEM WITHOUT ANY WARNING LIGHTS? WHAT CAN BE DONE ABOUT THIS?

WE BOUGHT A NEW 2017 CHEVY VOLT AT THE END OF DECEMBER 2016 AND HAD OUR FIRST ISSUE IN EARLY FEBRUARY 2017. WHAT HAPPENED THAT FIRST TIME WAS ON (2/3/2017) WHILE DRIVING THROUGH TRAFFIC THE CAR WITHOUT WARNING TURNED OFF THE ELECTRIC WHEEL MOTORS AND WOULD NOT ALLOW US TO POWER THE CAR PROPERLY TO GET THE CAR TO THE BERM. WE WERE NEARLY WERE HIT TWICE WHILE TRYING TO STEER THE CAR OFF OF THE INTERSTATE HIGHWAY AS IT DECELERATED. THE CAR WAS COMPLETELY DISABLED AN NEEDED TOWED BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP. AFTER THE DEALERSHIP HAD THE CAR FOR A WEEK THEY RETURNED IT WITH THE EXPLANATION THAT THE CAR NEEDED TO DO SOFTWARE UPDATES AND THEY WERE TOO LARGE TO DO OVER THE CAR'S SATELLITE SYSTEM ' BUT THEY NEVER GAVE US ANY INDICATION OF HOW WE WOULD HAVE BEEN INFORMED OF THE NEED FOR SUCH AN UPDATE. WE THEN HAD ANOTHER NEAR ACCIDENT TODAY (4/6/2017) ON THE SAME HIGHWAY AND WE WERE NEARLY PUSHED UP UNDER A SEMI WHILE TRYING TO MANEUVER OFF OF THE HIGHWAY AT 75 MILES AN HOUR. AGAIN, THE CAR WITHOUT WARNING SHUT OFF THE ELECTRIC WHEEL MOTORS AND WARNED US TO 'PUT THE CAR IN PARK'. IT HAPPENED IN EXACTLY THE SAME WAY AS IN FEBRUARY BUT NO WARNINGS HAD BEEN ISSUED FOR OUR CAR AND WE ALMOST HAD A HORRIBLE ACCIDENT. MY CONCERN IS FOR MY FAMILY AND COLLEAGUES SAFETY AT THIS POINT AND I DON'T WANT ANYONE DRIVING IN THIS CAR. I HATE TO THINK OF WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED TODAY IF MY DAUGHTER, WHO IS A BRAND NEW DRIVER, WOULD HAVE HAD TO DEAL WITH THE SAME SITUATION SANDWICHED IN BY TWO SEMI-TRUCKS AND WITH A CAR TRYING TO PASS ON THE SHOULDER AROUND HER ' IT COULD HAVE BEEN FAR WORSE. I AM IN SEVERAL CHEVY VOLT GROUPS ON FACEBOOK AND PEOPLE WHO LOVED THE GENERATION 1 OF THESE CARS ARE HAVING MAJOR ISSUES FROM BATTERY PACKS DYING, TO DRIVE TRAIN ISSUES, TO SPEED CONTROL PROBLEMS AND MORE WHERE PEOPLE ARE HAVING MAJOR SYSTEM PIECES REPLACED 2-3 TIMES IN THE FIRST FEW MONTHS THEY OWN THE CARS.

IF THE CAR LOSES POWER, AND THE DOORS HAVE LOCKED (DO AUTOMATICALLY), THERE IS NO WAY TO MANUALLY UNLOCK THE DOORS. THE PLUNGER IS RECESSED SO MUCH IT'S IMPOSSIBLE TO RAISE IT TO UNLOCK. I CONTACTED CHEVROLET, THEY HAVE NO ANSWER ON HOW TO OVERCOME THIS. I HAVE A FRIEND WHO WAS LOCKED IN ANOTHER TYPE OF VEHICLE WHEN LOST POWER, BUT COULD MANUALLY UNLOCK THE DOORS. TV NEWS THIS MORNING SHOWED A PERSON TRAPPED IN A CAR WITH NO POWER, BUT WAS ABLE TO MANUALLY UNLOCK THE DOORS. THE MESSAGE WAS TO LEARN HOW TO MANUALLY UNLOCK THE CAR IN CASE OF EMERGENCY. PLEASE SEE IF THIS CAN BE REMEDIED, IT MAY SAVE LIVES. THANK YOU, GRATEFUL TAXPAYER. *TR

WE ARE WRITING TO VOICE A VERY DISCONCERTING AND DANGEROUS INCIDENT WITH OUR 2017 CHEVY VOLT. ON A RETURN TRIP AT DARK FROM CLEVELAND, OHIO TO ROCHESTER, NY ON 12-26-16, OUR ENGINE SUDDENLY GAVE WARNING BEEPS WHICH PROMPTED MY HUSBAND TO PULL OVER TO THE SHOULDER ON INTERSTATE 90 IN ERIE, PA. WE HAD ALL OF 15-20 SECONDS TO GET OFF THIS HEAVILY TRAFFICKED HIGHWAY WHEN THE CAR LITERALLY SHUT DOWN.. NOTHING WORKED NOT EVEN THE WARNING FLASHERS. WE COULD NOT OPEN THE TRUNK, AND HAD WE NOT KEPT ONE DOOR OPEN WE WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO ENTER THE CAR. IN SUMMARY, THE TOTAL FAILURE WE ENCOUNTERED SHOWS THE SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE RELATED TO THIS CAR. WE ARE NOW RELUCTANT TO TAKE IT ON TRIPS THIS INCIDENT COULD HAVE RESULTED IN A SERIOUS ACCIDENT HAD WE NOT BEEN ABLE TO PULL OFF ONTO THE SHOULDER.
