When attempting to power down the car, a message, “Action required, Shift to Park” appears and car will not power down. After repeated attempts, sometimes requiring 10 or more, by re-starting the car and attempting to power down, it has eventually powered down. This problem is intermittent and the car WILL power down successfully repeated times, and then do it’s “shift to park” refusal to power down. There are hundreds of complaints on the GM Volt owners’ forum and even a Technical Service Bulletin No. 19-NA-206 dated February 2020 (maybe even more recent, but that’s the latest one I know of). The service bulletin also includes the Chevy Blazer, Malibu, Traverse and GMC Acadia (which, I understand, there is now a class action suit in that regard). If the car will not power down, it could drain the battery and leave the driver stranded, as well as making the car unable to be locked, which could also be a safety issue.

My 2016 Chevy Volt has an issue where the is an intermittent shift to park message displayed while the vehicle in in park. This issue has been identified as a widespread issue and Chevrolet has published a Service Bulletin (NHTSA Technical Service Bulletin 19-NA-206). The most recent version is Version 6 that was published in December 2020. The dealership is refusing to perform repairs that are clearly under warranty. The service bulletin specifically says it is covered under the warranty.

Vehicle Shifter does not correctly register the vehicle is in park. Does not allow the vehicle to be turned off. This is a common issue experienced by Gen2 Volt owners and well known by GM Service Tech and GM has not yet issued a recall. There is a potential safety issue if someone believes the vehicle is parked and exits the vehcile and the car is left running. Potential Driver Confusion on the park status could lead to the vehicle continuing to run or being put back in gear. GM needs to issue a recall for Gen2 Volts - 2016 and on.
Jun 16, 2021
AN ERROR APPEARS "SHIFT TO PARK" WHEN PARKING. THE CAR DOES NOT RECOGNIZE THAT IT IS SHIFTED TO PARK THUS IT CONTINUES TO RUN. A RUNNING VEHICLE THAT CANNOT BE TURNED OFF AND CAN RUN ON GAS IS A CONSIDERABLE HAZARD. THE GM FORUM FOR VOLTS CONTAINS MANY SUCH MESSAGES FOR 2016 VOLTS AND A PROBLEM WITH THE SAME SYSTEM ERROR LED TO A RECALL IN 2017 VOLTS. THE PROBLEM IS OCCURRING WITH INCREASING FREQUENCY IN THIS CAR, STARTING A FEW MONTHS AGO.

Vehicle displayed reduced propulsion and shift to park while driving on highway then suddenly stopped. Dealer said battery failed after a year of diagnosing issue. Issue may be BECM which has extended warranty service but dealer not addressing the issue of car stalling but instead other costly minor issues leaving the vehicle a safety concern. Replacing battery with a bad BECM would lead to exact same issue

After experiencing loss of power and loss of propulsion on the highway, took the car to Tropical Chevrolet in Miami Shores, FL. after diagnosing the car for 287.37 (credited to the estimate total of 3101.20), the dealership replaced the Battery Energy Control Module and bled the battery pack cooling system. We paid the bill (2665.89). On January 4, 2026 the check engine light came on again when the propulsion was reduced again, while driving on a highway. Tropical reported that the cause of the failure was their failure to replace or do the original repair at all. They replaced the exhaust gas recirculation valve and refilled the cooling system. The parts should be covered by warranty. We filed a claim with GM 2 months ago and still have not been reimbursed.

In May 2025, the EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve failed on my 2016 Chevy Volt with approx. 60,000 kms / 40,000 miles on it - that cost me approximately $3,000 to fix. In my opinion that should have been covered under warranty given that it is a common failure point on second generation Volts. Note that the EGR value (OEM - Original Equipment Manufacturer) is a readily available part. In October 2025, my BECM (Battery Energy Control Module) failed. Luckily, due to significant Volt owner complaints, GM was forced to provide a special warranty on this item, so the work that would have cost me approximately $4,000 was covered under this special warranty. The BECM is covered for my 2016 Chevy Volt until 2030. Note again that the BECM is a readily available OEM part. In December 2025 my Chevy Volt check engine light went on again, and this time the Chevy Dealership is telling me that the main hybrid battery needs to be replaced. However, GM decided in their infinite wisdom to discontinue production of the Chevy Volt battery, and so they can't even sell me a new hybrid battery, a critical component on this vehicle. My understanding is that the 2016-2019 Chevy Volt battery is the same part #24060122. The Chevy dealership has asked me to see if I can find a battery on my own, as their parts department cannot source one (GM used "York Electronics" in Canada). As a result, I am now left with trying to find a used/refurbished hybrid battery. If my Volt was a 2019 (the last year GM made the Volt), then this battery would be covered under warranty (8 years from in service date), yet GM wouldn't even be able to fix a 2018 or a 2019 Chevy Volt because they stopped making the battery for ALL Volts. How can a manufacturer get away with not even providing parts for 10 years (in my case), or 7 years (2019 Volt)? My only option seems to be to send a perfectly maintained car to the junkyard at 60,000 kms/40,000 miles. Never again will I buy GM.

Our BECM failed while we were driving. It went into limp mode, not allowing the car over 35mph and with no AC in 109 temps. It was a very scary experience. This is a known issue, but the dealer said it isn’t covered under special warranty.

I have a 2016 Chevy volt. It had to be towed to a Chevy dealership because it will not drive. The BECM module has failed, as is apparently the case with so many volt owners. GM, as a result of lawsuits about this car, extended the warrantee to fix the issue, but my vin number is not included in the case. The gar is a brick, and there is no way to fix it now. GM doen't even replace these batteries any more, and most often just buys back the bad vehicles. I still owe 9k on this car and it is useless now. I need help. These are the codes is is throwing. While I driving in the past week, a warning that "propulsion power reduced" appeared on my dashboard several times. The last time that I had driven the car, the heater would not turn off, and the smell of burnt rubber filled the car and then dissipated soon after. The car would only run in it's gas engine mode, and not switch over to electric mode, as it usually would. The next morning, the car would not start. The dash board would light up as if the car started, but when I shifted into drive, a warning appeared on the dash, "Shift to park", as it would when the car is not running. I could not start the vehicle. After plugging the vehicle in, a warning appeared on the console stating that "Charging is not available". The car was towed to the dealership. Their diagnosis showed that the Battery Energy Control Module had failed and must be replaced. They later confirmed that an electric cable needed to be replaced that was "corroded", but they could not confirm the cause of the corrosion because the cable was disposed of already. After researching online, I found that GM issued a Special Coverage bulletin: N232432680, citing a common malfunction of the Battery Energy Control module in 2016 to 2018 Chevy Volts that "causes a reduced power mode, a no start condition, or a no charge condition." The Special Coverage was to extend the warranty to 15 years or 150,000 miles. After inquiring the dealer about the Special Coverage, they claimed that our car is not covered under the warranty. After calling customer service, they claimed the coverage comes from NHTSA, and GM only issues orders by VIN, and therefore cannot cover the issue. After calling NHTSA, I was told the special coverage is not a national recall, and is internal to GM. The GM dealership still claims that the control module on our car is not covered under the warranty, and have denied the request for a manager inspection or investigation.

Vehicle had the Battery Energy Control Module fail at about 87,000 miles. Vehicle will not start and will leave you stranded when this happens. This is a known defect and GM issued a special coverage to extend the warranty for this specific component, but for some reason only applies to a handful of VINs. Mine was not one of them, so I got stuck with a $2500 repair bill. I love the car and am not mad that they are breaking, engineering is hard. I am mad that even after a requirement from the NHTSA, Chevy is refusing to repair a known defect with their vehicles that can leave the owner stranded and is making the owners foot the several thousand-dollar repair bill. This was my first Chevy, and due to the poor way this has been handled, probably my last.

The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Volt. The contact stated that while starting and driving at an undisclosed speed, the "Reduced Propulsion" message was displayed. Additionally, after parking the vehicle, the "Shift To Park" message was displayed, and the vehicle failed to turn off. The contact pressed the Start/Stop button and then opened and closed the front driver's side door to turn off the vehicle. The vehicle later failed to charge and start as needed. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where it was determined that the Battery Energy Control Module (BECM) needed to be replaced; however, the part was on backorder. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened. The failure mileage was approximately 83,574. The VIN was unavailable.

Action Required Shift to Park message comes up on the dash after starting the vehicle & shifting into gear out of Park. The message goes away when shifted back into Park, but the vehicle doesn't respond when shifted into gear. Reverse, Neutral, Drive, Low - none will engage. I had to repeat the process of starting the vehicle 28 times before it would operate as it should. Start Vehicle to View Application message comes up when in Park & trying to shut the vehicle off & will not power down until the driver door is opened. I worried that I'd be stranded if this continued to happen & took the vehicle to Brad Deery Motors in Maquoketa, IA for repair on 4/14/22. I paid $736.71 & the invoice states: 106128 shift to park, diag, intermittent open in the shift park solenoid, replaced shift park solenoid and jumper harness, tested working properly. I brought the vehicle home & had the same messages appear on 4/19/22. I have since read a forum on the Volt & understand that this has been a common issue & found a service bulletin: 19-NA-206, but wondering if there is an actual recall. I plan to contact GM regarding this issue.

On 2023/09/09, my Check Engine Light came on, and my car showed a "Reduced Propulsion" warning. As I continued to drive home, the car later began overheating, requiring me to reduce speed & stop frequently to let the car cool down. The local Chevrolet dealership diagnosed it as a failed EGR valve that caused the "non walk home" fuse to blow, which also disables the car's Engine Coolant Thermostat Heater (hence the overheating). Also three months later, this part is still on backorder with no estimated time of delivery.

Failure of car's keyless remote system. I got my fob and moved the car to where we charged it in the morning. In the afternoon after it was charged I had the same fob and got in to move it back by our front door and the screen gave the message "No remote detected". I assumed the fob battery was dead and changed it and it still would not recognize the fob. Then I got my wife's fob and it would not recognize that one either. So the keyless remote system in the car had failed in some way. I went online and saw there were plenty of cases of this happening to this model and other Chevy models that used a similar system. There is some issue with this system and it is very dangerous as someone could easily get stranded if they were alone in some remote place and not understanding how to even get in their car as there is no visible keyhole on the door to put the mechanical key. To follow up just as I was going out to the car to read the mileage all of a sudden the fob worked again. Both now work. It has been about 20 hours where it wouldn't work. I tried it many many times over those 20 hours and neither fob would work but now they both do. So this as many have reported , is an intermittent problem but dangerous because at any time you could be locked out of your car and you have to know how to pry off part of the door handle and insert the mechanical key and then place the fob in the special place under the lid in the console to be able to drive. Certainly once it happens to you and you learn all that you can do it in a reasonable time frame but when it happens the first time you are really stuck.

When I shift the car into "park" it will not register as "park" and a message comes up on the dash "shift to park." I'm unable to turn the car off at this point because it's required to be in "park" mode to accomplish this. Jiggling the shift handle will sometimes correct this but it appears to be getting worse over time. I spoke to a service tech at GM and they said they are aware of the issue and that it is a problem with this model. I was told the only fix was a costly replacement that may or may not solve the problem. A web search indicates there are many Chevy Volt drivers experiencing this same issue.

EXCESSIVE CONDENSATION FROM WATER LEAK BELOW THE FRONT PASSENGER FLOOR. IT WAS WITHIN THE BUMPER TO BUMPER WARRANTY, BUT 3 SEPARATE CHEVY DEALERS DID NOT DIAGNOSE OR FIX PROBLEM UNTIL AFTER WARRANTY EXPIRED. ONE DEALER EVENTUALLY FOUND A BAD WELD RESULTING IN A WATER LEAK AND SEALED IT. UNFORTUNATELY, THE LEAK HAS RETURNED AND THERE IS A LOT OF WATER BELOW THE FLOOR AGAIN. THIS REQUIRES REMOVING THE SEATS, TRIM, CARPET, AND FINDING ANOTHER BAD WELD.

The engine light came on, but the car would run and so took it to the dealer. They determined that the EGR valve had failed and would cost $2400 to repair. Apparently, this is a common failure point for Generation 2 Chevy Volts. If it might trigger a forced recall, I'd like to add this to the list.

EGR valve has failed leaving me stranded on side of the road. Problem was confirmed by a Chevrolet dealership. Engine light came on moments before it happened.

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve failed. Confirmed by dealer, Culver City Chevrolet, 8/29/2024. Failed EGR valve causes gas engine to emit harmful smog forming emissions. This part is still covered by 10 year, 150,000 mile warranty. However, GM/Chevrolet has not made a replacement available and GM representatives have provided no estimate of when or if that replacement part will be made available.

Car displayed a lower power mode on dashboard. Approximately 20 miles later car switched from gas mode to electrical battery mode. Fortunately there was some charge remaining in the battery that I was able to get off freeway and charge car for 3 hours to make the 30 miles home. Dealer thinks problem is a defective EGR valve and I am awaiting a part for this repair for 37 days and counting. The low power mode states it is limited to 35 KW of power but I was surprised when the engine cut off to battery mode. If I had used up the battery charge on the first portion of this trip I do not know how suddenly the car would have stopped on freeway.

While driving the car displayed “reduced propulsion power” on the dash and then I lost all drive power and could not switch the plug in hybrid from electric to gas engine mode. The check engine light came on slightly before the incident.

On [XXX] the check engine light turned on in my 2016 Chevy Volt (VIN: [XXX] miles 145,xxx). I was 2 hours from home in the freezing cold snow but thankfully the vehicle allowed me to drive home without any issues (no reduced propulsion power). When I returned to the vehicle to have a diagnostic check the error light disappeared and I was unable to check for error codes. Still no issues driving under EV/gasoline. Later that day, the car stopped going completely, no shifting out of park either. EV range was reporting 0 miles despite having full charge. I plugged in the charger but it would not work (first time this happened), " Not able to Charge" message displayed. After cycling power the EV range was full range and I was able to shift into drive again. These issues were intermittent over 3 weeks, frequently standing me temporarily. After cycling power, opening and closing the door, cycling power again, the car would function normally and I could drive under battery or gasoline power. I managed to capture these error codes while the MIL light was on: U2603, U2604, U2605, U2606, U2617, U2618, U2619, U2620, U2621, U2622, U2623, U2624 [XXX] my vehicle no longer drives or shifts out of park, "Not able to charge" message displayed, CEL light on. A class action lawsuit revealed a technical service bulletin 18-NA-261 released in 2018 (see attached) accusing GM of continuing support of the known faulty module. The result of the case was Special Coverage Bulletin N232432680 which acknowledges and addresses the above mentioned issues by replacing a faulty BECM common to ALL Chevy Volt models years 2016-2018. My VIN is EXCLUDED from coverage due to being a CARB compliant vehicle despite exhibiting the same behaviors, error codes, and sharing the same faulty BECM. Of the 60,000 Volts sold in 2016-2018, only 19,000 (~33%) qualify under the special coverage terms. 100% of the vehicles that qualify for coverage are NON-CARB compliant. Battery Energy Control Module Malfunction. It is a known issue with this system failing on the chevy volt. There is a service bulletin on this problem. 18-NA-261 is the service bulletin. The car will not start and when it does start it has loss of power while driving. Chevy is only fixing certain VIN numbers even thou it pulls up the same codes in their bulletin. Chevy only gave extended warranties to certain VIN numbers also. Extra warranty bulletin N232432680. This is a major component for the high voltage battery which drives the vehicle. The dealership wants $5000.00 to repair this.

My experience is proof for the investigation on “loss of motive power, including a stall, reduced power state, and/or a no-start condition due to the Battery Energy Control Module (BECM).” My safety and the safety of others were affected because the reduced engine propulsion caused me to drive at a max speed of around 50 mph, and eventually the car left my stranded a few weeks later when it would not start at all in a parking lot. The gas engine would run at an extremely high RPM to make up for the failure of battery propulsion. The dealer covered the work under warranty. The work was performed during the pandemic chip shortage in 2022 and my car was at the dealership for two months from about August to October. The check engine light would come on sporadically before the problem started, and when the failure would occur, I would get a “Propulsion reduced” message in the driver screen and the gas engine would kick on to an extremely high RPM even when the car should have been running on battery. Accelerating from a stop to a normal speed would sound like you are flooring down the accelerator to get on a highway on-ramp. I no longer have the paperwork to confirm this, but it was performed at the Fort Collins (Colorado) Dellenbach Chevrolet dealer, it may be possible for me to get the paperwork, but I no longer live in Colorado. The process went all the way up to corporate Chevrolet before the warranty was honored, and I was compensated with company points.

Driving to work one morning, I noticed an engine light with a "Propulsion Power Reduced" on my 2016 Chevy Volt. Upon closer arrival to work, the car was behaving quite erratically with constant "Propulsion Power Reduced" errors on the dash. The A/C stopped blowing cold and immediately fogged up the front window, making me unable to see the road. After arriving at work, I could smell what could be described as a burning electrical smell coming from the vehicle, although no fires were seen. Upon checking diagnostic codes, the car had a list of codes pointing to the failure of the Battery Energy Control Module (BECM.) I researched the issue and discovered "N232432680 - Special Coverage Battery Energy Control Module Malfunction" listed by GM and the NHTSA. My Chevy Volt is within the model years (2016-18) and mileage (<150,000) for the special coverage warranty from March 2024. Upon checking with the local GM dealer, they said that my VIN is not included in the special coverage and I must pay out of pocket, even though I have the exact problem described in the warranty and my Volt satisfies other conditions (model year and mileage). I am scheduling a service appointment this week with the local dealer to formally diagnose and repair the issue.

The BECM has failed and causes a reduction in engine power. There is a Special Coverage N232432680 for this issue. Dealership Service Center is saying my car doesn’t qualify based on the VIN, even though it matches the year, make, and model on the Special Coverage. GM is failing to cover the issue despite it matching everything on the Special Coverage.

Chevy has put out a "special coverage" (number XXX) on 2016 to 2018 volts on the BECM issue that is currently being investigated. I need to make the note that upon trying to fulfill this warranty/ special coverage on my 2016 volt, they are finding loopholes to not cover a huge handful of 2016 to 2018 volts that have the exact same BECM issue and components as the volts that are covered. Although I'm not positive, it seems to me that they are not granting special coverage to all volts that have a PZEV warranty in place as it's redundant. However, 75% of us with PZEV warranties are in non CARB states and cannot utilize the warranty. So they are leaving us within this category who have the exact same BECM issues as every other 2016 to 2018 volt out of being eligible for the new coverage, while making it look like they are fixing the entire issue. They are secretly leaving a handful of us dry and without this coverage. Not only that, they are refusing/ unable to give me accurate information as to what vehicles qualify for this warranty if not all 2016 volts which is against the Magnuson-Moss warranty act and illegal on their part. They forced me to pay $2500 for this repair after telling me I would be covered by warranty and obviously would have held my car had I not paid. After telling me it was free. Somebody needs to probe deeper into this and make sure that Chevy is honoring what they claim because it appears to me they are secretly trying to [XXX] a percentage of 16 to 18 volt owners who have the exact same issues and components as the cars that are covered. This is a safety issue as my car died and temporarily stranded me several times before this repair as you guys already know is an issue with the 16 volts that Chevy has refused to acknowledge until recently. Component/System Failed: The engine of my 2016 Chevrolet Volt experienced a sudden internal crack, leading to complete engine failure. The engine is available for inspection upon request. Safety Risk: The engine failure rendered the vehicle completely inoperable, posing potential risk if it had occurred while driving. Sudden loss of engine power could have caused a crash or left me stranded in traffic, endangering myself and others. Problem Reproduction / Confirmation: The failure was confirmed by a GM dealership, which performed a full inspection and documented the engine crack. The dealership verified that the crack was sudden and not caused by negligence or improper maintenance. Inspections by Others: The vehicle has been inspected by the dealership, and all reports are available. I have also submitted the issue to GM corporate for warranty review. No police or insurance representatives have reviewed this, as this was a mechanical failure with no collision. Warning Lamps or Symptoms: No warning lights, messages, or unusual symptoms appeared prior to the failure. The engine appeared to operate normally until the sudden failure. Upon failure, low oil and low propulsion error message appeared on dash. Current no dash lights are on in the vehicle. Assessment of Cause: Based on dealership inspection and documentation, the failure appears sudden and possibly related to a defect in emissions-related engine components. No external damage or user error contributed to the failure.

Check engine light came on. Moran Chevrolet dealership says the code is related to the EGR cooler and EGR valve. They want me to pay $3,175.23 for these two parts - however, they can't guarantee that I will get the parts as they are on backorder, and no idea when they will get parts. This is outrageous. I asked, "What if the part doesn't come in?" The dealer's response, "Then we will refund your money, but, we will keep $250 for inspecting the car." "And what if I don't fix it?" Their response: "Eventually, your car will stop working." "What if the car is on the freeway and just stops?" Their response is unsettling for me and hopefully every driver on the road: "We haven't seen that type of failure, yet."

EGR valve failed. When switched from Battery to gas car stalled and we were stuck. Dealer said it needs a new EGR valve. But it was on back order. This was a year ago and Chevy still claims the part is on back order! Now the car is ready to renew registration. But it cannot pass inspection because it must have been driven on gas for many miles for the inspection to work! The part is obviously no longer available and Chevy has not offered a solution.

Got a Check Engine light on Aug 26 2022 driving about 5 minutes out of my house. With that light turned on, the EV showed zero miles range (it was fully charged when I left the house), the ICE engine kicked in but it was running very harsh and when I stepped on the gas peddle, it would not accelerate and can only go about 30 mph. I immediately made a U-turn and returned home for the car is not drivable. Took the Volt to my dealership on Aug 29, 2022 and service manager diagnosed as a BECM failed and now waiting for a replacement, which they said they are not able to find one. This is going on week #7.

Faulty micro-switch from factory, causes power surge. Flawed microswitch in transaxle shift cable. Incomplete connection of microswitch resulting higher voltage to PCM.(power control module) This irregularity, shows a DTC code reducing power propulsion during movement. The car will loose power & ability to shift. During driving movement. Quite a safety concern. A "shift to park" error displays on driver display screen. An OBD2 scanner will clear code & after a few attempts remain operational. However intermittent & unpredictable when to expect the loss of traction power.

The vehicle loses power when trying to accelerate when driving in electric mode, and the gas engine kicks on after a second at which point acceleration returns. It occurs when the battery power is high or low. Sometimes a warning pops up on the dash saying speed is limited to a specific MPH.

On [XXX], this Volt was towed to the Dealer because the Volt would not start, would not charge, and the engine light was on. The Dealer claimed that the problem was the Chevrolet Volt Battery Energy Control Module (BECM), GM Part # 24296900, which was covered under the GM hybrid VOLTEC warranty (8 years, 100,000 miles). On [XXX], 2024, this Volt (VIN [XXX] ) was towed to the Dealer again because the Volt would not start, would not charge, and the engine light was on. The Dealer claimed that the hybrid battery connectors were corroded, the disconnect relay should be replaced, and the BECM should be replaced again at a total cost of $5,005.58. On [XXX], GM issued special coverage warranty N232432680 (15 year, 150,000 miles) to cover BECM replacements for a malfunction involving the BECM. Plaintiff checked the VIN at the GM Recall and Warranty Center website. The Volt at issue is covered under special coverage warranty N232432680, according to the GM website. Plaintiff asked the Dealer and GM again after [XXX] about warranty coverage for the BECM at issue. GM responded that the bumper-to-bumper warranty expired and that they would provide no assistance. On [XXX], Plaintiff filed a complaint with the local Better Business Bureau (BBB) regarding the BECM at issue. GM responded in writing that the bumper-to-bumper warranty expired and that they would provide no assistance. Plaintiff sought arbitration, but both the local BBB and the BBB Auto Line found that Plaintiff was not eligible to arbitrate with GM due to GM’s program summary guidelines with the BBB. GM breached multiple warranties and failed to provide sufficient repairs, and this Volt has been out of service for more than 80 days. Based on GM’s warranty breaches, insufficient repairs and inconsistent statements, this Volt poses serious safety concerns. Driving 72mph down I5 interstate the display notified me with a check engine light with two errors, enigne propulsion reduced and engine overheating. I pulled over to the side of the road and called a tow. This was a very traumatic event. I had my partner and my 2 year old daughter in the car.I just purchased this used vehicle from a Toyota dealer the same day. It has 63k miles on it and still under powertrain warranty. I literally drove the car 45 miles. TOTAL. I have spent more time towing and fixing this car than actually driving it. This is a total lemon. I need a refund from GM and all the pain and suffering that this caused my family.

My car, without warning, lost power while driving and then flashed an engine light. This happened on a street and I was able to coast to safety, but if it had happened in an intersection I would not have been so lucky. The problem was confirmed by a dealer as a failure of the Battery Energy Control Module, which has been happening to this car with numerous other owners, according to the Volt owner website.

Driving at 75 MPH on the freeway the power completely cuts off an a message appears on my dash "Propulsion Power is Reduced" - Pressing the gas barely gives any power, Imagine being in the middle of flowing traffic doing 75 mph to close to 20 mph. Research shows me this is a KNOWN issue with GM and the problem is with the BECM control module. There is also the issue of the EGR valve which apparently is tied into the BECM. I brought to the Chevy dealer and they said the BECM NEEDS to be replace ASAP because GM knows this is a dangerous situation and GM extended the warranty on this part to 150,000 miles. My vehicle is at 152,400 miles and they will not cover this. This is a serious issue that should be a recall that forces GM and Chevy to pay for this fix as it is something they have been aware of for years and it is a major accident waiting to happen. Please make them issue a recall for the BECM fix.

My 2016 Chevrolet Volt loses power while driving and the "propulsion power reduced" warning message appears. This has happened multiple times in the past few weeks and it is very dangerous losing power while traveling. After taking it to a Chevy dealer for service, they advised that it was an internal failure of the BECM (battery energy control module) and that it would need replaced. After searching online it appears that this is a common issue with the Chevy Volt models from 2016 - 2019. So much so that GM extended a special warranty to cover this failure up to 15yrs and 150,000 miles. Unfortunately for reasons I still don't understand, I was informed that my vehicle is not covered under this special warranty despite it specifically being the year and model that is affected. My vehicle currently has 93k miles and was purchased in 2016. So I am just outside the original 8 year 100k mile warranty but thought I was covered under this new special coverage given that this is an issue that GM is clearly aware of. I was also shocked to find out that there apparently was never a recall for this issue. My wife and child normally take this vehicle across town at highway speeds and I'm lucky the issue only happened to me. I fear for those who brought their vehicles and are not aware of the issue and will be told that theirs isn't covered as well.

I picked up my vehicle from Wasler Polar Chevrolet on 7/26/2023 after they claimed to have "repaired" my vehicle. After receiving my vehicle, about 5 miles away from the dealership, my vehicle suddenly quit keeping up with traffic, and lost *all* power equipment. Brakes, steering and acceleration were all unresponsive. The vehicle almost sent me under a semi-trailer, but I quickly forced the steering wheel to the left and engaged the emergency brake, which successfully stopped the car. The vehicle bricked itself, and had to be towed back to the dealership.

While driving suddenly the battery power died (1/3 battery life left) and the ICE came on reving very high and check engine lights came on and vehicle slowed. Pulled over at first spot I could find and tired to restart the car. Car would not power down or restart the ice motor and the electric drive motors stopped working and vehicle would roll backwards once put into drive. Vehicle had to be towed back to dealership. Car would not power down or reset.

The EGR valve in the 2016 Chevy volt will fail blowing fuse 3 which will also take out the engine oil pressure control solenoid, the evap emission purge solenoid valve, the engine coolant thermostat heater, and the oxygen sensor 1 as they all share the same fuse. The car will tell you that the engine is unavailable and, if you are out of hybrid battery power, will leave you unable to move the vehicle. In my particular situation it left me stranded blocking one lane on a two lane s-bend road on a 5-9% grade mountainside with no cellphone reception. Thankfully the car stopped far enough away from the previous bend that people had time to see me and I didn't get rear-ended. If I had stopped 20 feet sooner that likely would not have been the case. The replacement part for the EGR valve is impossible to find as it is back ordered everywhere and places that will let you back order it will try to charge $1927 just for the part (no installation service included). If you live in a state without emission checks then you can unplug the EGR valve and replace the fuse but that means your producing more pollutants. Until GM gets their act together and offers affordable replacement parts I don't see another alternative.

Started vehicle with > 50mi on the EV-range. Pulled out onto road, stopped at red light. Now showed 0mi and refused to move when pressing the gas (did not fail over to gas on series PHEV) Garbage truck coming up behind me had to swerve to avoid rear-ending me as I was frantically trying to start the car. Kept saying 'shift to park' (condition required to start the vehicle) Took several minutes and 20+ tries before I got it to start (GAS engine) and was able to proceed. Car keeps randomly dropping to 0mi EV range. Has refused ot start on occasion. All symptoms align with the N232432680 bulletin but GM saying my car isn't covered???

While on a road trip, we were traveling on a rural highway at roughly 55 mph. We received a warning message on the dashboard stating that "Propulsion power was reduced" and the engine began running rough, with surging noticeable based on throttle position. We also noted that engine temperature was rising above what was typical for the vehicle. The vehicle was able to maintain highway speed, and we were able to limp the vehicle to a safe location. Based on a web search, we were able to diagnose the issue (a failed EGR valve) as well as a way to limp the vehicle to a local dealership. They made a change that allowed us to limp home safely (unplug the EGR valve's electrical connector and replace the blown fuse under the hood). The vehicle was taken to a Chevy dealership when we made it home. The failure we had diagnosed was confirmed, and the component was replaced. The repair was not covered under warranty, and cost a significant sum to repair (1139.91). Additionally, this appears to be a very, very common failure for this make and model of vehicle- to the point where there is so much demand for this repair to be performed that these components (the EGR valve specifically) are difficult to obtain from Chevy. Additionally, the failure mode is such that when the EGR valve fails, it pulls excessive currents, and blows a fuse that also controls a number of important engine cooling components, leaving engine cooling significantly compromised. If we had been going faster, or if the weather was warmer, or if the load inside the vehicle was heavier, it would have been easy to overheat the gas engine and leave us stranded. I am concerned about the incidence rate of the failure, (based on online reports) the relative small number of miles on the vehicle when the failure occurred, (~57k) and the possible knock-on effect of the failure of the gas engine's ability to cool itself due to a relatively unrelated failure.

I was driving in clear weather (with my ICE engine as propulsion) when an Engine Warning Fault light appeared on my dash and the vehicle slowed to 5mph with no response from the throttle pedal. I pulled into a parking lot, had the vehicle towed to an independent service shop, and had them check the codes. There were a dozen faults stored, but they found the 'Non Walk Home' fuse had blown, and faults pointed to the EGR Valve as having faulty electronics. They could not find an EGR valve for sale so they unplugged the EGR Valve and replaced the fuse, which allowed the engine to drive normally again, but with the Check Engine Light on at all times. I called my local Chevy dealer and they told me the EGR I needed was Part Number 12691147 for $243, but they were backordered and there were dozens of people in front of me for their dealer alone. Now, 11 months later, I'm still waiting on the part, I have found hundreds of other Volt owners online with the same issue, and the Part Number has been changed by GM to 19436113, with a price increase of 1100% to $2642. And the part is still not available because of "high demand" on a car that was discontinued five years ago.

I had just left my house about to enter the on-ramp to Interstate 95 south when my 2016 Volt abruptly and without warning stopped. I was unable to coast or pull the car to the side of the road. I was in the middle of the lane in a dangerous place to stop a car and a dangerous place to get out of the car due to the steady traffic entering the interstate. My car would not restart and I had it towed to the Portsmouth NH Chevy dealer. As it was the beginning of the GM strike I had to wait several days for the replacement battery control sensor then I had to wait for another 4 weeks or so for a replacement transmission to be installed. The day after I got my car back, about 2 weeks ago, the transmission fluid was leaking onto the garage floor. The Chevy dealer has ordered new transmission hoses but only one has come in and I was told not to drive my car until these were replaced. The sensor pad and transmission were covered under warranty, I was told the hoses to the transmission and labor to install them are not part of the transmission and not covered. The incident has been extremely inconvenient but the way my car just abruptly stopped and wouldn’t restart was very unnerving and could have been very dangerous. I do not have paperwork at the moment but can provide a dealer invoice of the covered work so far. Please contact me with any questions.

2016 Chevy volt started to not shut off with the message that car needed to shift to park. Car is just over 100,000 miles (104,000) spent a few weeks jiggling shifter to get car turned off then made an appointment at Platinum Chevy of Santa Rosa. While waiting we researched the issue to find that the Shift To Park is a known issue and the Volt has in fact been named in a class action suit. Am currently at crossroad as I cannot get GM to stand behind their product. It’s taken four calls and an escalation to management to find out that they may offer a percentage to fix the problem but because we’re out of warranty it is a customer problem. So, to cap it off, GM has sold us a vehicle with a known safety issue with no recall and will not fix their problem.

WHEN ATTEMPTING TO TURN OFF THE CAR IT SAYS "ACTION REQUIRED: SHIFT TO PARK" AND WILL PROCEED AS BEING LEFT ON, DESPITE BEING IN PARK. THIS OCCURS ABOUT 70% OF THE TIME THE CAR IS DRIVEN AND TAKES SEVERAL TRIES OF TURNING ON THE CAR, MOVING, PARKING, AND TURNING BACK OFF BEFORE THE ENGINE SHUTS OFF WITHOUT THIS WARNING.

I bought the car new in 2015 and after about only 40,000 miles I began getting a Propulsion Reduced error and the car would have very slow acceleration. I took it to the dealer and they replaced the accelerator for $500. It drove fine for a month, but then the acceleration was reduced again. I took it back to the dealer and they were stumped. They wanted to charge me $1300 just to replace some wires, but they weren't confident that would fix the problem. I declined. As it stands now I can toggle the F08 fuse and that temporarily fixes it for about an hour or so, but the error always comes back and the car has a hard time accelerating. Not safe. I called GM and they suggest I take it to another Chevrolet dealer, so I'm going to do that. I'm also going to reference NHSTA Special Coverage N232432680 Battery Energy Control Module Malfunction to see if they can replace the BECM. This is a common problem with 2016 Chevy Volts. If they can't fix it, I'll look into the California Lemon Law to see if I can get my money back on the car. I appreciate your support on this.

GM issued a special coverage warranty for 2016-2018 Chevrolet Volts that had a BECM failure. However, they did not include all of the Volts. We have a 2016 that has a catastrophic BECM failure. The car won't start and the only indicator was the day before it said the vehicle didn't charge. This appears to be the same issue, but Chevrolet did not include our model. We have about 87k miles and are only 3 weeks past the original warranty.

•Vehicle lost power while driving on the highway at speed. The vehicle would not run with gas engine power or EV charge basically died on the road in traffic. After coming to a stop safely but not without some close calls vehicle would not start even with car having fuel of two types in it. •The battery charge would not register, and the car would not start for a little while. Display showed nothing and was only making a dinging sound. Around half hour later the vehicle started, and I drove it to my home and parked it. I have not been driving it as it seems like a safety concern with the battery system and not feeling reliable. I had tried to charge it after the initial event and it did not charge. I did only a little research on cost for battery issues and the cost made me very put off even looking at the car. The car has been sitting sense August of last year. I took the car into a GM repair shop a week ago and the shop told me that the BECM module is weak. I looked this up and found that there is a lot of people having the same issue! Also, there are 19000 cars just like mine who got a recall or Special coverage. I am told I don’t meet the requirements for the coverage even though my car has the issues. They say my VIN is not on the list, clearly this special coverage did not go far enough. There appears to be some gaps in the coverage of this issue there are tons of people having this issue a full recall should be investigated and enacted there is clearly a problem that should be addressed. The fact that most cases do not happen when the car is running seem to put this on everyone’s back burner but people are being harmed financially while GM uses loop holes to not address an issue that could cost people there time, hard earned money, lost wages, even there life if this malfunction causes accidents. There was and is clearly enough to warrant action. Letting GM get away with a half Hearted attempted at fixing this is a crime.

With PHEV battery at 0%, it's normal for the gas engine to kick in. What's not normal is when the infamous BCEM propulsion system failure happened. First, it shut off the ICE engine and reverted to EV mode when I have 0% charges left. The system also reduced power to the car. Luckily, I wasn't on the freeway, or this could end up really badly. I was at the point where I could no longer accelerate and was coming to a stop really quick. Because I was still on local street, was able to safely pull over to the side of the road and turned off the system completely. I waited a minute or 2, turn the car back on and the engine kicked on immediately. Please have GM issue a recall for this problem TSB 18-NA-261 because if this happens to someone on the freeway when their battery is at 0% and BCEM shuts off the gas engine with loss propulsion failure, it can result in serious accidents and deaths.

The contact's son had informed the dealer that he had been smelling a fuel odor inside the vehicle; however, the dealer informed the contact's son that the odor was probably a burning oil odor. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed that the fuel rail was leaking and needed to be replaced. The mechanic contacted the dealer who informed him that the part was on a national backorder. The mechanic replaced the part with a used part; however, the failure persisted. The dealer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the part was on backorder. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and offered a coupon towards the purchase of a new vehicle. The failure mileage was approximately 60,000. The contact stated the Volt engine starts periodically even if it has battery power available. The engine forces itself on and can not be turned off manually.

Sunshine Chevrolet stated their mechanic could not diagnose issue so it was not covered under warranty. I demonstrated intermittent charging issue by plugging vehicle into dealership charger in front of showroom. I was at that time allowed to leave without paying diagnostic charge. 1½ years ago while car was still under warranty car failed to start. Called dealership. They stated it could be 12volt battery. Action Required Shift to Park message comes up on the dash after starting the vehicle & shifting into gear out of Park. UN-COMMANDED VEHICLE ACCELERATION UNDER FULL ELECTRIC DRIVE MODE (TWICE). WHILE DRIVING STEADY AROUND 65 MPH ON THE FREEWAY (NO CRUISE CONTROL USED), A SLIGHT STEP ON THE ACCELERATOR, CAUSED THE CAR IMMEDIATELY ACCELERATED UP TO 88 MPH (DASH SHOW LARGE ELECTRICAL DRAW OF BATTERY POWER). STEPPING ON THE BRAKE, USING THE REGEN PADDLE ON THE STEERING WHEEL AND REPEATED PRESSING THE CRUISE CONTROL POWER DIDN'T DISENGAGE THE POWER SURGE. CAR WOULD ACCELERATE WHEN BRAKE PRESSURE WAS LIFTED. AFTER REPEATED HARD PRESSING OF THE BRAKE PEDAL, THERE WAS A "CLACK" SOUND FROM BELOW THE DRIVER CONSOLE AND THE CAR RETURNED TO NORMAL. BEING ON THE FREEWAY, I WAS NOT ABLE TO PULL OVER AND RESTART/REBOOT THE CAR. I CONTINUED TO DRIVE CAUTIOUSLY, MONITORING THE CAR AND LEFT THE FREEWAY FOR SURFACE STREETS. EVERYTHING SEEMED TO BE OKAY UNTIL I CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP BEHIND TRAFFIC. WHEN TRAFFIC STARTED MOVING AGAIN, I LIGHTLY DEPRESSED THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL AND THE CAR BEGAN ACCELERATING QUICKLY ON IT'S OWN. SEVERAL HARD PRESSES OF THE BRAKE PEDAL AND THE CAR RETURNED TO NORMAL. THIS SECOND INCIDENT WAS NOT AS VIOLENT AND THE FIRST AND THERE WAS NO "CLACK" SOUND FROM BELOW THE DRIVER DASH AS WITH THE FIRST. THIS IS WORRISOME AND CANNOT BE RELATED TO THE CRUISE CONTROL SINCE IS WAS AT A STOP AND CC ISN'T SUPPOSED TO ENGAGE UNDER 25 MPH. THE REST OF THE SEVERAL MILES TO MY WORK WAS UNEVENTFUL. I'VE CONTACTED THE DEALER ABOUT THE SAFETY OF DRIVING IT OR HAVING IT TOWED. WAITING FOR THEIR RESPONSE. I IMAGINE THE ON-BOARD COMPUTER WOULD'VE STORED TODAY'S DRIVING DATA.

THE VOLT CENTER DISPLAY HAS GONE BLANK, PROBABLY A BAD SCREEN. THE DISPLAY SERVES MULTIPLE PURPOSE: INFOTAINMENT, NAVIGATION, CHARGING CONTROL (BEING AN ELECTRIC VEHICLE), AND MOST IMPORTANTLY THE BACK UP CAMERA DISPLAY. THE REAR HATCHBACK VISIBILITY IS VERY POORLY DESIGNED, WITH GREAT DEPENDENT & RELIANCE ON DRIVER TO USE THE BACK CAMERA. WITHOUT THE DISPLAY, BACKING DRIVER CAN NOT SEE A SMALL CHILD NOR ANY OBJECT.

WARNING ABOUT AIRBAG SYSTEM NOT WORKING CORRECTLY AND TOLD TO BRING CAR TO DEALER WITHIN 1 DAY. CAR WAS IN MOTION ON CITY STREET WITH MY SON IN FRONT. I DON'T KNOW EXACT PARTS BUT I BROUGHT IT TO CHEVY AND THEY REFUSED TO PAY FOR FIX (SO THE CAR IS STILL THERE WHILE I APPEAL). IT WAS SOMETHING ABOUT THE SYSTEM IN THE SEAT AND POSSIBLY DASH THAT CONTROLS THE AIRBAG.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2016 CHEVROLET VOLT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE BACK-UP CAMERA WAS MALFUNCTIONING AND THE FRONT CONSOLE WOULD NOT WORK IF OTHER SERVICES WERE BEING USED. THE CONTACT HAD TO TURN OFF AND RESTART THE VEHICLE TO GET THE CONSOLE TO WORK AGAIN. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO RELIABLE CHEVROLET (800 N CENTRAL EXPY, RICHARDSON, TX 75080, (972) 201-9240) WHERE THEY RE-FLASHED THE MODULE AND CHANGED THE CAMERA; HOWEVER, THE FAILURE RECURRED AND THE VEHICLE WOULD SHUT OFF WHEN PARKED. THE VEHICLE WAS A HYBRID AND THE BATTERY WAS DEPLETED. THE CONTACT WAS CONCERNED ABOUT THE CARBON MONOXIDE LEVEL IN HER GARAGE. THE VEHICLE WAS GETTING MORE AND MORE DIFFICULT TO SHUT OFF AND THE CONTACT HAD TO WAIT SEVERAL MINUTES TO MAKE SURE IT FINALLY SHUT OFF. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER WHERE THEY STATED THAT THEY WOULD CONTACT THE MANUFACTURER AND CALL BACK. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 5,000. *TT *JB *TT THE CONSUMER STATED UNRESPONSIVE DISPLAY GOES BLANK WHEN STARTING THE VEHICLE. THE CONSUMER FURTHER STATES WHEN A VEHICLE IS TURNED OFF HAVING ERRORS NOT RECOGNIZING THE VEHICLE IS IN PARK. *TR

THERE'S AN ODD SITUATION WHEN I'M IN THE ELECTRIC MODE AND AM PASSING OVER A BUMPY BIT OF ROAD: THE VEHICLE ACCELERATES AUTOMATICALLY. THE PART THAT IS TROUBLING IS THAT THESE ARE TIMES WHEN THE DRIVER WOULD WANT TO SLOW DOWN. IT HAS HAPPENED TO ME MANY TIMES. I'VE BEEN LUCKY, SO FAR. BUT I HOPE THIS IS REMEDIED SOON.
