I WAS NOT INITIALLY GOING TO FILE A COMPLAINT UNTIL I SEEN OTHERS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. THE DASH CRACKED INTO MANY PIECES. I ORIGINALLY THOUGHT THAT MY WIFE HAD DONE SOMETHING TO CRACK THE DASH, AND SHE THOUGHT THAT I HAD. THE PART REMAINED BASICALLY INTACT UNTIL THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT AT THE LOCAL CHRYSLER DEALER HAD TO REMOVE THE DASH FOR OTHER REPAIRS. AT THAT TIME WE HAD TO PAY FOR ANOTHER DASH BECAUSE IT FELL COMPLETELY APART AND COULD NOT BE RE-ASSEMBLED. I AM NOT SURE IF THIS IS EXACTLY A HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY CONCERN, BUT ONLY BECAUSE THERE WAS NOT AN ACCIDENT, NOR AN INCIDENT. *TR

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 CHRYSLER PT CRUISER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS TRANSPORTED FROM THE MANUFACTURER TO THE DEALER, ADHESIVE TAPE WAS AFFIXED TO THE REAR BUMPER TO SECURE THE COVERING DURING DELIVERY AND THEN REMOVED. HOWEVER, OVER A PERIOD OF TIME THE TAPE RESIDUE CAUSED THE PAINT COLOR TO FADE. THE DEALER AND THE MANUFACTURER WERE NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE WHO WERE UNABLE TO PROVIDE ANY ASSISTANCE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 47,000.

I HAVE ALWAYS HAD TROUBLE KEEPING AIR IN THE TIRE OF THIS CAR. I HAVE TALKED TO OTHER OWNERS AND THEY TO HAVE HAD TROUBLE. IT IS THE CHROME WHEELS THAT IS CAUSING THE PROBLEM. WE HAVE NOT HAD AN ACCIDENT BUT I'M SURE SOME ONE HAS. IT ALSO HAPPENED IN MY DAUGHTERS STRATUS RT , CHROME WHEELS. I TALKED TO GM PEOPLE THAT HAD CHROME WHEEL FROM THAT ERA AND THEY TO HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE CHROME WHEELS. I WAS WONDERING IF YOU HAVE HAD ANY OTHER COMPLAINTS OF THIS NATURE. I STILL HAVE THE CAR BUT MY DAUGHTER GOT RID OF HERS. WE HAD TO PUT ANOTHER TIRE ON THE CAR THIS WEEK BECAUSE THE TIRES KEEP LOSING AIR. THE CHROME RIMS LEAK AIR BECAUSE THEY HAVE BEEN LEECHING (PEELING) SINCE THE PURCHASE OF THE VEHICLE. I HAVE ONLY OWNED THE VEHICLE FOR 6 YEARS (I BOUGHT THE VEHICLE WITH APPROXIMATELY 68,000 MILES) AND HAVE AVERAGED 8700 MILES PER YEAR. I HAVE HAD THE RIMS SEALED AT LEAST A DOZEN TIMES SINCE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE BUT THE SEALS ONLY LAST FOR SHORT PERIODS DUE TO THE CONSTANT PEELING. CURRENTLY, I HAVE TO FILL THE TIRES WITH AT LEAST 20 POUNDS OF AIR EVERY 2-3 DAYS. MY BIGGEST FEAR IS THAT THEY WILL FAIL WHILE I AM DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY. *TR

ACCORDING TO THE REPAIR SHOP, THE REASON WHY TIRES ARE LOSING AIR SO FREQUENTLY IS BECAUSE THERE IS AN ISSUE WITH THE RIMS. I HAVE NOW PUT 2 SETS OF 4 BRAND NEW TIRES ON THIS CAR W/IN THE PAST COUPLE OF YEARS AND THE TIRES ARE STILL LOSING AIR SO MUCH SO THAT I MUST STOP AT LEAST 2X/WEEK TO PUT AIR IN THEM. I WAS JUST READING THE COMPLAINTS AND CAME ACROSS OTHER REPORTS OF THIS SAME INCIDENT. WOULD LIKE TO SEE THIS AS A RECALL SINCE IT'S NOT JUST MY CAR ALONE. *TR

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 CHRYSLER PT CRUISER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE TIRES WERE CONSTANTLY GOING FLAT ALTHOUGH SHE REPLACED THE TIRES THREE TIMES IN AN UNUSUALLY SHORT PERIOD OF TIME. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE RIMS WERE CAUSING THE TIRES TO GO FLAT. AS A RESULT, THE RIMS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE WHO OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 50,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 92,000.

THE CONTACT STATED THE RIMS WERE FACTORY RIMS FROM CHRYSLER. THE DEALER STATED THE RIMS COULD ONLY BE RESEALED, BUT NOT REPLACED. THE CONTACT STATED THE TIRES WILL LOSE AIR OVER NIGHT. WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE PULLED THE STEERING WHEEL HARD TO THE RIGHT. WE WERE DRIVING SLOW IN TOWN, HAD THIS HAPPENED AT HIGHWAY SPEED A WRECK WOULD HAVE BEEN UNAVOIDABLE . GOT THE VEHICLE TOWED HOME AND TOOK A LOOK AT IT . FOUND THE FRONT SUB FRAME (TO WHICH THE STEERING GEAR, LOWER CONTROL ARMS AND SUCH ARE BOLTED TO) HAD RUSTED TO THE POINT THAT IT CRACKED , ON THE RIGHT HAND SIDE. THIS ALLOWED THE RIGHT LOWER CONTROL ARM TO SHIFT BACKWARD CAUSING THE DEATH PULL TO THE RIGHT.

WHILE SLOWING DOWN TO STOP FOR A RED LIGHT MY CAR SUDDENLY VEERED TO THE RIGHT. I HAD TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL TO THE LEFT TO KEEP THE CAR STRAIGHT WHILE I STOPPED. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO A GARAGE AND UPON INSPECTION THEY FOUND THE CROSSMEMBERS UNDER THE ENGINE WERE COMPLETELY RUSTED AND BROKEN. I BOUGHT THE CAR NEW AND ALTHOUGH THE CAR IS 13 YEARS OLD IT ONLY HAS 56,000 MILES AND HAS ALWAYS BEEN STORED IN A GARAGE.

WHILE DRIVING AT 30 MILES AN HOUR, THE FRONT SUSPENSION CROSS-MEMBER BROKE AS A RESULT OF SEVERE RUST. THIS CAUSED THE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL TO STEER TOWARDS THE DITCH CREATING A SIGNIFICANT SAFETY HAZARD. THE RUST WAS CAUSED BY WATER DRAINING FROM THE AIR CONDITIONER ONTO THE PASSENGER'S SIDE OF THE CROSS-MEMBER. I HAVE ATTEMPTED TO ORDER A REPLACEMENT PART FROM CHRYSLER BUT SO FAR THE OUTLOOK FOR DELIVERY HAS CHANGED FOUR TIMES AND IS CURRENTLY ESTIMATED FOR 12/25/2013 (2.5 MONTHS AFTER THE CAR BECAME INOPERABLE). NOT ONLY DOES CHRYSLER IGNORE THE NUMEROUS REPORTS OF THIS COMMONLY REPORTED DESIGN FLAW, THEY ARE PROVING TO BE INCAPABLE AT PROVIDING REPLACEMENT PARTS. POWER STEERING FLUID IS LEAKING FROM THE HIGH PRESSURE HOSE WHERE IT IS ROUTED UNDER THE ENGINE CASING. THE HIGH PRESSURE HOSE APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN WARN THROUGH BY RUBBING AGAINST ONE OF THE CLAMPS WHICH SECURE THE HOSE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE ENGINE CASING. POWER STEERING PUMP WAS MAKING WHINING NOISES. POWER STEERING FLUID RESERVOIR WAS CHECKED. DIPSTICK WAS DRY.

SOMEHOW MANAGED TO GET TO SIDE OF ROAD WITHOUT ROLLING VEH, WHEELS TURNED OPPOSITE DIRECTIONS, HAD VEH TOWED TO SHOP. ENGINE CRADLE WAS RUSTED OUT ON RIGHT SIDE AND GAVE WAY, WHICH DISCONNECTED STEERING CONTROL ARM AND AXEL FROM THE WHEELS, MECHANIC - STATED DRIPPING FROM AIR CONDITIONER HAD RUSTED THE PARTS ON THAT SIDE ONLY - REST OF UNDER VEH WAS IN GOOD SHAPE - STATED HAD SEEN THIS IN PT'S OFTEN - A KNOWN CHRYSLER ISSUE WITH THE PT CRUISERS AND THE NEONS ALSO - WHICH HAVE THE SAME PLATFORM. IF HAD BEEN GOING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS - WOULD HAVE BEEN A VERY BAD, POSSIBLY FATAL ACCIDENT. I OWN A 2001 CHRYSLER PT CRUISER. I PURCHASED IT USED IN 2006. IT'S BEEN IN THE SHOP NUMEROUS TIMES BECAUSE THE BATTERY KEEPS GOING BAD. IN 4 YEARS I'VE REPLACED THE BATTERY 3 TIMES. TODAY I WAS ALMOST IN A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. I WAS DRIVING AND IT JUST STALLED IN TRAFFIC! IT JUST DIED, LIKE IT RAN OUT OF GAS. THIS VEHICLE IS A SAFETY HAZARD! THE CONTACT RECEIVED RECALL NOTICE ID NUMBER: 02V214000 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE: DELIVERY: HOSES, LINES/PIPING, AND FITTINGS) AND HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE DEALER FOR THE RECALL REPAIRS. THE DEALER STATED THAT BECAUSE THE FUEL LINE WAS MISSING FROM THE VEHICLE, THEY WERE UNABLE TO PERFORM THE RECALL REPAIRS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT SINCE HE WAS IN POSSESSION OF THE RECALL NOTICE WHICH WAS ADDRESSED TO HIM THAT HE SHOULD BE ABLE TO HAVE THE RECALL REPAIRS PERFORMED ON THE VEHICLE. 2001 CHRYSLER PT CRUISER HAD A HOLE IN FUEL LINE. *NJ THE CONSUMERS WIFE WAS DRIVING HOME, WHEN SHE SMELLED GAS. THE CONSUMER OPENED THE HOOD AND SAW FUEL COMING FROM THE FUEL LINE THAT WAS RUBBING AGAINST THE AIR CONDITIONER PIPE AND FITTING. THE CONSUMER TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND WAS INFORMED THERE WAS A RECALL REGARDING THIS ISSUE AND ACCORDING TO THEIR RECORDS, THE RECALL WAS PERFORMED IN 2002. THE CONSUMER STATED EITHER THE RECALL WAS NEVER DONE OR THE RECALL FIX DID NOT WORK AND IS SEEKING REIMBURSEMENT FOR THE NEW FUEL LINE THAT WAS INSTALLED. *JB

THE FUEL LINE WAS RECALLED IN 2002 UNDER PT CRUISER FUEL LINE LEAKS AGAINST AIR CONDITIONER AND I HAD THAT REPAIRED IN 2002. I HAVE DONE NOTHING TO THE FUEL LINE SINCE THEN. ON JULY 25 2009, THE FUEL LINE SPRUNG A LEAK. UPON FURTHER INVESTIGATION I NOTICED THE LINE RUBBED AGAINST THE TOP OF THE ENGINE WHICH CAUSED THE HOLE IN THE FUEL LINE. OBVIOUSLY FUEL WAS LEAKING ONTO THE ENGINE THE CONSEQUENCES OF THE LEAK COULD HAVE BEEN CATASTROPHIC AND LIFE THREATENING TO MYSELF AND FAMILY. THE FUEL LINE IS THREADED UNDER THE POWER STEERING PUMP HOSE AND OVER THE ENGINE TO THE FUEL INJECTION RAIL. OVER THE MILES THE LINE RUBBED THE TOP OF THE ENGINE WHICH CAUSED THE HOLE IN THE FUEL CAUSING GAS TO SQUIRT AND LEAK IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. I REPLACED THE LINE TO REPAIR. I DID KEEP THE OLD FUEL LINE AND TOOK PICTURES OF THE ENGINE WHERE IT RUBBED. I BELIEVE THIS TO BE A DESIGN FLAW, BY ALLOWING THE FUEL LINE TO RUB ON THE ENGINE AND HELD DOWN BY THE POWER STEERING PUMP HOSE. *TR

I PURCHASED A USED 2001 PT CRUISER ON THE WAY HOME WHEN I CAME TO A STOP AT A LIGHT, IT SOUNDED LIKE WATER RAPIDLY BOILING WITH SMOKE COMING OUT FROM UNDER THE HOOD. I HAVE LOOK UP THIS PROBLEM AND SAW THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM FROM 2001 TO 2008 PT CRUISERS, NO ONE SEEMS TO KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEM IS, IT WENT FROM A RADIATOR CAP TO THE BLADES COMING OFF OF THE FAN. I DON'T KNOW HOW SO MANY VEHICLES CAN HAVE THIS SAME PROBLEM WITHOUT THERE BEING A RECALL TO FIX THIS. TO LOWER THE ENGINE HEAT I HAVE TO PUT THE HEAT OR AC UP TO THE HIGHEST SETTING. I HAVE HAD THE THERMOSTAT AND RADIATOR CAP REPLACED. HOW CAN THIS SAME PROBLEM GO UNFIXED FROM YEAR TO YEAR? I HAVE LOOKED INTO THIS TILL I EXHAUSTED ALL AVENUES TO LOOK, EVERYONE SAYS THE SAME THING, FROM YEAR TO YEAR, WATER BOILING SOUND, CAR OVERHEATING ALMOST EVERYTHING UNDER THE HOOD REPLACED AND STILL THIS SAME PROBLEM EXIST. PURCHASED THE CAR WITH 69,591 MILES. CAR HAS ALWAYS CONSUMED MORE OIL THAT NORMAL. TOOK A 200 MILE ROAD TRIP, UPON RETURN THERE WAS A RATTLING AT THE TIMING CHAIN COVER. TENSIONER PULLEY WAS BAD. TAKEN TO MECHANIC SHOP WITH 93,643 MILES AT TIME OF INCIDENT. WHILE DISASSEMBLING THE CAR TWO BROKEN MOTOR MOUNTS, BUSTED LOWER CONTROL ARM BUSHING, A BAD WATER PUMP, BUSTED RADIATOR SEAL, AND A BAD TENSIONER PULLEY WAS DISCOVERED. THE CAR NEVER OVERHEATED OR SHOWED SIGNS OF ANY OF THESE PROBLEMS. AFTER THE CAR WAS PUT BACK TOGETHER IT IDLES HIGH, CUTS OFF, AND OVERHEATS. TIMING HAS BEEN CHECKED AND RECHECKED, IT IS IN TIME. CAR RUNS WELL AT HIGHER SPEEDS BUT CANNOT STAY ON AT LOWER RPMS. I AM NOW REPLACING THE FAN, PCV VALVE AND PIPING, AND POSSIBLY GOING TO PERFORM A COOLANT FLUSH. UPON INVESTIGATING THE INTERNET FOR A HARNESS I CAME UPON SEVERAL WEBSITES WITH NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS INVOLVING THE SAME PROBLEM. AFTER REGULAR ROAD DRIVEING FOR A MONTH HAD FRONT TIRES WEAR DOWN TO STEEL BELT, PURCHASED TIRES AT WALMART SO TOOK CAR BACK IN TO HAVE TIRES LOOKED AT WAS TOLD IT WAS AN ALIGNMENT ISSUE. I KNOW THIS IS NOT THE CASE BECAUSE CAR HAD JUST BEEN SERVICED AND ALIGNMENT CHECKED THE SAME DAY TIRE WERE PUT ON CAR. THE WEAR OUT IS ON THE INSIDES OF BOTH FRONT TIRES, AND MINOR WEAR ON THE INSIDES OF THE REAR TIRES AS WELL AS MAJORITY OF THE TREAD IS WORN OFF AS WELL ON ALL 4 TIRES. THIS WEAR DOWN CAUSED ME TO GO INTO DITCH IN SNOWY CONDITIONS, WHILE DRIVEING AT SAFE SPEEDS.

WE HAVE A 2001 CHRYSLER PT CRUISER. WHILE DRIVING ON A FREEWAY, THE REAR LEFT WING WINDOW FELL OUT AND WAS RUN OVER BY THE VEHICLE FOLLOWING US. FORTUNATELY, NO ONE WAS HURT BUT IT COULD HAVE CAUSED A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. THERE IS A RECALL ON THE 2005 MODEL FOR THIS VERY PROBLEM (07V149000). OUR LOCAL DEALER TOLD US TO TAKE UP THE ISSUE OF REPAIR WITH CHRYSLER, WHICH WE DID, AND THEY REPLIED THAT THEY WOULD NOT HONOR THE RECALL FOR OUR MODEL YEAR, EVEN THOUGH IT IS EXACTLY THE SAME PROBLEM. OWNER NOTICED A SLIGHT "PUDDLE" (SIZE OF A SILVER DOLLAR) ON GARAGE FLOOR. OWNER JACKED UP CAR TO INSPECT AND IDENTIFY WHERE LEAK WAS ORIGINATING. NOTED A MISPLACED BUSHING ON THE BRACKET HOLDING THE POWER STEERING HOSE IN PLACE UNDER THE ENGINE. ONE END OF THE BUSHING HAD BROKEN ALLOWING THE HOSE TO CHAFE AGAINST THE BRACKET AND LEAK FLUID. OWNER IMMEDIATELY TOOK CAR INTO THE DEALER TO HAVE REPAIRED. UPON EXAMINATION, DEALER INFORMED OWNER THAT THE MOTOR MOUNTS (2) HAD BROKEN ALLOWING THE ENGINE TO SIT LOWER ON THE FRAME AND THAT IS WHAT CAUSED THE BUSHING TO FAIL. OWNER PAID OVER $1,000 TO REPLACE MOTOR MOUNTS (2) AND REPLACE BUSHING AND POWER STEERING HOSE. OWNER FEELS THAT MOTOR MOUNT FAILURE WAS PREMATURE AS THE CAR ONLY HAS 38,000 MILES ON IT AND HAS NEVER BEEN DRIVEN HARD AND HAS BEEN GARAGED ITS ENTIRE LIFETIME. OWNER HAS IN HIS POSSESSION THE DEFECTIVE MOTOR MOUNTS. I FIRST SENT THIS COMPLAINT ON MAR 7, 2014 AND RECEIVED AN EMAIL REPLY ACKNOWLEDGING IT, BUT SINCE HAVEN'T HEARD ANYTHING. IS MY COMPLAINT BEING TAKEN SERIOUSLY? IT IS A SERIOUS COMPLAINT AS FOLLOWS: ON FEB 5, 2014, MY 2001 PT CRUISER SHUT DOWN WHILE IT WAS BEING DRIVEN DOWN A BUSY STREET. IT DIDN'T MAKE A SPUTTER OR A SOUND, IT JUST DIED. LUCKILY, IT COASTED LONG ENOUGH FOR ME TO PULL OFF ONTO A QUIETER STREET AND UP AGAINST A CURB. WE HAD IT TOWED TO THE AUTOMOTIVE SHOP THE EXPLANATION FOR THE MOTOR SHUTTING DOWN WAS ALARMING. THE AUTOMOTIVE TECH REPORTED THE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR NEEDED REPLACING. AS I UNDERSTAND, WHEN THIS SENSOR GOES BAD, THE ENGINE AUTOMATICALLY SHUTS DOWN. WITH NO WARNING. I HAD GAS IN MY PT. I DON'T THINK PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT THIS; THE TECH SAID MOST CARS THAT ARE 'NEWER' (AS FAR BACK AS 2002, AT LEAST) HAVE THIS SENSOR. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY CONCERN AND APPEARS TO BE WIDESPREAD. I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE FRONT "ENGINE CRADLE", ALSO KNOWN AS THE "K-FRAME" OR "FRONT SUB-ASSEMBLY". DT: THE CONSUMER STATED THE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE DID NOT RESPOND TO A QUICK TURN IN EITHER DIRECTION. THE CONSUMER TOOK THE VEHICLE THE TO DEALERSHIP FOR AN INSPECTION AND DISCOVERED THAT BOTH FRONT TIE ROD ENDS WERE WORN AND WOULD NOT PASS INSPECTION. IN ADDITION THE CONTROL ARM HAD LOST A BUSHING WHICH CREATED A KNOCKING NOISE. THE CONSUMER HAS REPLACED TIE ROD ENDS AS WELL AS THE CONTROL ARM BUSHING. DEALER NOTED THIS WAS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE PT CRUISER AND THIS WAS A DESIGN FLAW. THE CONSUMER CONTACTED THE MANUFACTURER AND THEY DENIED THERE WAS AN ISSUE WITH THE PT CRUISER AND THAT ALL CARS HAVE GREASE FITTINGS CALLED "ZIRKS" SINCE REPAIRS NO PROBLEMS AS OF YET. I HAVE A INTERMITTENT CYCLIC VIBRATION AT SPEEDS FROM 65MPH AND ABOVE. THE FIRST TIME I TOOK THE CAR BACK TO THE DEALER, THEY REPLACED 3 OF THE TIRES BECAUSE THEY WERE NOT ROUND. THIS HELPED THE PROBLEM, BUT DIDN'T CURE IT. I HAVE TAKEN IT BACK TWICE MORE AND ALTHOUGH THE SERVICE MANAGER ,AFTER TAKING A TEST DRIVE WITH ME, AGREES THAT THE VIBRATION IS STILL THERE, THEY SAY THEY HAVE CHECKED EVERYTHING AND CAN'T FIND A PROBLEM. LET ME START BY SAYING I JUST BOUGHT THIS 2001 LIMITED EDITION PT CRUISER THREE DAYS AGO FROM A PRIVATE DEALER. I WAS ON THE HIGHWAY, HEADING HOME FROM WORK IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT, AND WANTED TO TRY THE CRUISE CONTROL. I TURNED IT ON AND SET IT FOR 67MPH TO SEE IF IT WORKED FIRST. THEN I WENT TO RESET IT TO MY ACTUAL DESIRED SPEED BY TAPPING MY BRAKES, THEN I TRIED THE SWITCH ON THE ARM OF MY STEERING WHEEL BUT THE CRUISE CONTROL WOULDN'T SHUT OFF. I GOT OFF AT THE NEXT EXIT AND WAS ABLE TO SLOW DOWN TO 40MPH BEFORE MY BRAKES LOCKED UP AND I WAS FORCED TO RUN THE STOP SIGN AT THE END OF THE OFF RAMP. (THANK GOD IT WAS AT 3AM AND MY BABY WASN'T WITH ME!). I WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER DOING 20MPH BEFORE THE BRAKES LOCKED UP AGAIN. I QUICKLY SHUT IT OFF, PUT IT IN PARK, AND WAITED A FEW MINUTES TO TURN IT BACK ON. BUT THE ENGINE JUST KEPT REVING, AS IF I WAS HOLDING MY FOOT ON THE GAS BECAUSE THE CRUISE CONTROL WAS STILL ON! I TRIED RESETTING IT BY TURNING THE KEY BACK AND FORTH A FEW TIMES. I TRIED TO SEE IF IT WOULD THROW ME A CODE BUT ONLY "DONE" APPEARED ON MY DASH. EVERY TIME I STARTED THE CAR, THE LED FOR CRUISE CONTROL WOULD COME ON AND THEN SHUT OFF AFTER A FEW SECONDS. I WAS ABLE TO COAST HOME DOING 40MPH WITH ACCESS TO MY BRAKES AGAIN. NOT VERY WELL, BUT ENOUGH TO MAKE IT HOME, (WHEN I'D LET OFF THE BRAKE THE CAR WOULD TAKE OFF AGAIN). I'VE BEEN DOING RESEARCH SINCE I GOT BACK AND FOUND A FEW OTHER REPORTS OF THIS HAPPENING, EXCEPT THEY WERE ALL ABLE TO STOP. FOR EXAMPLE BY SHIFTING INTO NEUTRAL OR SHUTTING THE CAR OFF. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 CHRYSLER PT CRUISER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE SERVICE ENGINE WARNING LIGHT FLICKERED AND SUDDENLY REMAINED ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE UNDERBODY PREMATURELY RUSTED AND COULD FRACTURE AT ANY MOMENT. I HAVE HAD MANY PROBLEMS WITH THIS CAR TO INCLUDE ELECTRICAL, OVER HEATING (WHICH WAS NEVER FIXED EVEN AFTER TAKING IT TO THE DEALERSHIP 3 TIMES), AND TRANSMISSION. IN 2013 AS I WAS DRIVING DOWN A BUSY 4 LANE HWY. I HEARD A SUDDEN AND LOUD BOOMING NOISE AND THE CAR BEGAN SHAKING VIOLENTLY. THINKING THAT I HAD HIT SOMETHING IN THE ROAD I BEGAN SLOWING DOWN AND MAKING MY WAY TO THE SHOULDER OF THE HWY. BUT BEFORE I COULD GET TO THE SHOULDER OF THE HWY. THE CAR MADE THAT LOUD BOOMING NOISE A SECOND TIME AND SHOOK VIOLENTLY AGAIN. IT THEN LOST ALL POWER TO THE FRONT WHEELS LEAVING ME STRANDED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HWY. AFTER REMOVING AND OPENING UP THE TRANSMISSION I FOUND THAT THE DRIVE SHAFT IN THE CENTER OF THE TRANSMISSION HAD SHEARED IN HALF. UPON FURTHER INSPECTION I BELIEVE THAT THE SLIGHTLY WORN ENGINE MOUNTS CAUSE A BINDING ACTION ON THE DRIVE SHAFT IN THE TRANSMISSION THUS CAUSING THE SHAFT WHICH IS MADE OF A COMPOSITE MATERIAL TO BASICALLY EXPLODE INSIDE THE TRANSMISSION. THIS PROBLEM IS SO WELL KNOWN BY US CAR BUFFS THAT JASPER ENGINES INC. (A WELL KNOWN COMPANY THAT REMANUFACTURES ENGINES AND TRANSMISSIONS) REPLACES THIS STOCK SHAFT WITH A STRONGER MORE ROBUST ONE WHEN THEY REMANUFACTURE THESE TRANSMISSIONS. I REPLACED THE SWITCH, AND ALTHOUGH THE FOGLIGHTS NOW WORK PROPERLY, THERE IS NOW A FAULT IN THE DOME LIGHT FUNCTION, WHICH CAUSES THE DOME LIGHT TO ILLUMINATE WHEN THE SWITCH IS OFF. I RESEARCHED THE COMPONENT ON-LINE AND RETRIEVED REPORTS OF HEADLIGHTS TURNING THEMSELVES OFF AT RANDOM INTERVALS. HEADLIGHTS, FOGLIGHTS, DASHBOARD ILLUMINATION, DOME LIGHT AND TURN SIGNALS ARE ALL IN THE SAME COMPONENT. FOR FOGLIGHT DEFECT, MECHANIC REMOVED THE APPROPRIATE FUSE FROM THE FUSE PANEL AS A TEMPORARY FIX.

DEALER SAID ALTHOUGH THE PADS WHERE WEARING EVENLY NOW, THEY STATED "BUT WORN OUT FRONT AND REAR", NEED TO BE REPLACED. OVER APPROXIMATELY THE PAST YEAR I HAVE BEEN DEALING WITH THELEN AUTO GROUP IN BAY CITY, MICHIGAN REGARDING DEFECTIVE RIMS ON MY 2001 PT CRUISER. I AM CONSTANTLY REPLACING AIR IN FAIRLY NEW TIRES DUE TO THIS. AFTER SPEAKING TO THELEN SEVERAL TIMES CHRYLSER WAS CALLED IN DECEMBER OF 2005 (DATE BELOW IS APPROXIMATE). AFTER THE DEALER SCRAPED AND SPRAYED THE RIMS TO STOP THE PEELING A COUPLE OF TIMES THELEN'S MECHANIC (PAT) STATED THAT THIS JUST WOULDN'T WORK. PAT ALSO WENT ON TO ADD (IN THE PRESENCE OF MY FATHER) THAT HE NEVER SAW SUCH A THING. THIS WAS ON A JUNE 2006 VISIT TO REPLACE MY RADIATOR. AFTER SEVERAL PHONE CALLS CHRYSLER NOW STATES THAT THE DEALER TOLD THEM IT WAS JUST SALT EROSION AND THEY WOULD NOT REPLACE THE RIMS. CHRYSLER ALSO STATES THAT THIS INFO WAS GIVEN TO THEM FROM MIKE THELEN AND HIS MECHANIC. MR. THELEN STATES HE DID NOT SAYS THIS. WHEN ASKED IF HE WOULD REPLACE THE RIMS FROM HIS DEALER NO MATTER WHAT CHRYSLER SAID; HE REFUSED. OBVIOUSLY SOMEONE IS LYING AND I AM AT A STALEMATE. I HAVE A 2001 PT CRUISER. I HAD AN INCIDENT IN WISCONSIN 11/24/03 WHERE MY STEERING WHEEL LOCKED AND COULD NOT BE UNLOCKED, THUS I COULD NOT START THE CAR.
