WE HAVE HAD THE CAR APPROX 6 YEARS AND HAD TO PUT IN FIVE TRANSMISSIONS. THEY KEEP BURNING UP AND NOBODY CAN TELL US WHY. WE USE THE VEHICLE FOR VERY LITTLE TRANSPORTATION TO AND FROM SCHOOL MOSTLY APPROX 2 AND 1/2 MILES EACH WAY. THE VAN CONSTANTLY BUCKS WHEN SLOWING DOWN FROM HIGH SPEEDS TO LOW SPEEDS AND WILL OFTEN DIE DOING THE SAME THING. THE TRANSMISSION ALWAYS SEEMS TO BE MAKING A SOUND THAT INDICATES IT IS BEING STRESSED WHILE IN 2 TO 3 GEARS. *NM

AS I BROUGHT DOWN SPEED OF MY VEHICLE FROM 65 MPH TO STOP TODAY, JUST STOPPED DEAD AT THE STOP SIGN AND THE TRANSMISSION OF MY VEHICLE FAILED. SERIOUS TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS, 4 MONTHS AFTER I BOUGHT THE MINI VAN IT HAD TO BE SERVICED, WHICH WAS COVERED UNDER THE 24 MONTHS/24000 MILE EXTENDED WARRANTY THAT I PURCHASED WITH THE VEHICLE FOR $1495. 2ND VISIT ON 9/24/01 TRANS SLIPPING IN 3RD GEAR. PER MECHANIC THE SNAP RING SNAPPED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. AGAIN THE TRANSMISSION WENT ON 8/26/02. IT NEEDED A REBUILT & RECONDITIONED 6710 TRANSMISSION & REBUILT/RECONDITIONED TORQUE CONVERTER ALSO A FILTER TOTALING $1588.99. ON 2/26/03 RETURNED BACK TO THE SHOP FOR A BLEW REAR DIFFERENTIAL & PASSENGER SIDE AXLE TOTALING $609.50. I WAS TOLD THAT THIS WOULDN'T BE COVERED UNDER THE LIFETIME WARRANTY THAT I HAVE ON THE VAN BECAUSE THE VAN GOT STUCK IN THE SNOW AND I CAUSED IT TO BLOW, WHICH IS RIDICULES. NOW THE SHOP THAT I GOT THE WORK DONE AT IS OUT OF BUSINESS AND NOW AT A NEW LOCATION UNDER A NEW NAME WITH THE SAME PERSON THERE. I WAS TOLD THAT MY LIFETIME WARRANTY WOULDN'T BE COVERED AT THE NEW LOCATION AND THAT I WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR ANY REPAIRS NEEDED ON THE TRANSMISSION. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1996 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN. THE CONTACT HAD THE VEHICLE REPAIRED ACCORDING TO RECALL NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 00V268000 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM) IN 2005. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH, HE SMELLED A MILD BURNING ODOR. MINUTES LATER, HE NOTICED SMOKE RISING FROM THE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE. SECONDS LATER, THE VEHICLE WAS ENGULFED IN FLAMES. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT ARRIVED AND EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE. THE MAJORITY OF THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED AND IT WAS TOWED TO HIS RESIDENCE. AN INVESTIGATOR FROM THE FIRE DEPARTMENT CONCLUDED THAT THE FIRE BEGAN NEAR THE FUEL LINES. THE MANUFACTURER HAS NOT BEEN NOTIFIED. THE CONTACT STILL HAS POSSESSION OF THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 130,000.

TL* - THE CONTACT'S VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR RECALL 00V268000 REPAIRS. THE DEALER TOLD THE CONTACT THAT THE RECALL REPAIRS HAD ALREADY BEEN MADE ON THE VEHICLE PER RECALL REQUIREMENTS. THIS REPAIR WAS DONE ON DECEMBER 11, 2006. ON JANUARY 2, 2007 AFTER DRIVING APPROXIMATE 6 MILES THE DRIVER SMELLED GAS FUMES SO HE DROVE THE VEHICLE BACK HOME. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE GAS FUMES KILLED 14 OF THE BIRDS THAT WERE HOUSED IN HIS GARAGE. THE CONTACT OPENED THE HOOD AND GAS WAS LEAKING. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HE HAD NOTICED THE VEHICLE WAS USING MORE GAS THAN IT HAD PREVIOUSLY. THE VEHICLE WAS STILL SLOWLY LEAKING GAS 24 HOURS AFTER HE ORIGINALLY NOTICED THE LEAK. WHEN EVER IT RAINS OR SNOWS AND A LIL BIT OF MOISTURE GETS UP IN THE ENGINE THE SERPENTINE BELT COMES OFF AND I LOSE EVERYTHING, POWER STEERING, FAN, YOU NAME IT ITS GONE, AND I HAVE ALMOST WRECKED 5 OUT OF 8 TIMES THIS HAS HAPPENED..2 TIMES I FOUND MYSELF HAVING GOING IN TO A FIELD TO STOP DUE TO STEERING WAS GONE, AND POSSIBLE BURN/ FIRE COULD HAVE RESULTED FROM ENGINE OVER HEATING AND LIQUIDS BOILING/ AND STEAM RISING. LEADING TO BE A VERY DANGEROUS PROBLEM TO ANYONE NEAR THE VEHICLE, I HAVE 3 CHILDREN AND THEY WERE WITH ME 3 OF THE 8 TIMES THE BELT CAME OFF. THE SERPENTINE BELT CHRONICALLY HAS FALLEN OFF AND BEEN REPLACED ON THE CAR. IT HAS FALLEN OFF TWICE IN THE FIRST YEAR THAT WE PURCHASED THE CAR NEW. WHEN IT FALLS OFF, THERE IS NO POWER STEERING. I HAVE A 1996 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN . IN SEPTEMBER OF 2004 THE SERPENTINE BELT CAME OFF IN THE RAIN CAUSEING LOSS OF STEERING AND OVERHEATING ALARM. I REPLACED THE TENSIONER AND BELT AND THOUGHT IT WAS FIXED .TO DATE I HAVE HAD TO PUT THE BELT BACK ON AT LEAST 7 TIMES AND REPLACED IT WITH A NEW ONE THREE TIMES .BUT THE PROBLEM IS STILL THERE WET ROADS OR RAIN AND THE BELT COMES OFF.LOOKING ON THE INTERNET I SEE THIS IS A WIDESPREAD PROBLEM .IVE WORKED ON CARS MOST OF MY LIFE AND HAVE NEVER HAD THIS KIND OF PROBLEM.HAVE YOUR EXPERTS LOOK AT THE TENSIONER AND IDLER PULLEY DESIGN THEY ARE SMOOTH WITHOUT SIDES TO KEEP THE BELT ON THEM.THIS SHOULD BE A MAJOR RECALL.

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1996 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 5 MPH DOWNHILL IN THE SNOW, THE BRAKES LOCKED AND THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO SLIDE. THE CONTACT RELEASED THE BRAKE PEDAL AND THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED. SHE REAPPLIED THE BRAKES, BUT THEY LOCKED AGAIN. THE CONTACT STRUCK A TREE HEAD ON AND THE AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY. THE CLOCKSPRING FAILED ON THE DATE INDICATED. THE AIR-BAG, HORN AND CRUISE CONTROL WERE NON-FUNCTIONAL DURING THE FAILURE. I REPLACED THE UNIT WITH A NEW ONE. I INVESTIGATED WHY THE UNIT FAILED BY DISASSEMBLING IT. THE FLAT RIBBON CABLE IN THE UNIT FAILED FROM INADEQUATE STRAIN RELIEF AT THE POINT OF CONNECTION. ALL 5 CONDUCTORS WERE BROKEN DUE TO REPEATED HARD BENDING WITHOUT ADEQUATE SUPPORT AT THE CONNECTION POINT.*AK

THE CLOCKSPRING IN THE STEERING COLUMN FAILED. THIS CAUSES THE HORN, CRUISE CONTROL AND AIRBAG SYSTEM TO FAIL. THERE IS NO INDICATION THAT THE HORN IS OUT. ONLY THE AIRBAG LIGHT ON THE DASH COMES ON. YOU DON'T KNOW THE HORN IS OUT UNTIL YOU NEED IT! I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM ON MY PERSONAL VAN AND ON MY COMPANY VAN. THEY WERE BOUGHT FROM DIFFERENT DEALERS AT DIFFERENT TIMES. IT IS VERY HARD TO BELIEVE THAT A SINGLE DRIVER CAN HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM ON TWO DIFFERENT CARS WITHOUT THERE BEING AN INHERENT DESIGN DEFECT IN THIS PART. PLEASE INVESTIGATE THIS PROBLEM BEFORE LIVES ARE LOST THROUGH THE LOSS OF THE HORN OR AIRBAGS THAT DON'T WORK WHEN NEEDED. THE CONDUCTORS THAT FEED THE EXPLOSIVE CHARGE TO THE AIRBAG ARE OPEN DURING THIS CONTINUOUS FAULT AND THE AIRBAG WILL NOT DEPLOY IN AN ACCIDENT.*AK

MY SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON AND THE CODE THAT WAS FOUND SAID THAT A MISFIRE WAS FOUND IN CYLINDER 6. IT HAS HAPPENED SINCE FIXING THAT PROBLEM, BUT THE SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT WENT OFF. I HAVE BEEN TOLD TO TRY TO FIX MANY DIFFERENT PROBLEMS BUT NO ONE, NOT EVEN THE CHRYSLER DEALERSHIP CAN TELL ME FOR SURE WHAT IS WRONG AND NEEDS TO BE FIXED. THIS IS AMAZING TO ME, BECAUSE I CAN FIND MANY PEOPLE WHO HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM, AND NOT ONLY WITH 1996 GRAND CARAVANS. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS PROBLEM BECAUSE OF THE SUDDEN STALLING AT SUCH HIGH RATES OF SPEED. IF SHOULD BE REQUIRED TO BE RECALLED AND FOUND WHAT THE PROBLEM IS. THE CUP HOLDER IN SOME VEHICLES IS LOCATED DIRECTLY ADJACENT TO THE DASHBOARD. WHEN THE VEHICLE STOPS, BEVERAGE SPLASHES ONTO THE DASH, IN THIS CASE INTO A COMPUTER BOARD IN THE DASH THROUGH SLOTS IN THE DASH FOR THE HEATER CONTROLS. THE RESULT IS TOTAL FAILURE OF THE FRONT AND REAR WINDOW DEFROSTER, WINDSHIELD WASHER AND WIPERS, FRONT AND REAR HEATERS, AND AIR CONDITIONING. THE LACK OF ABILITY TO CLEAR THE FRONT AND REAR GLASS CONSTITUTES A SAFETY HAZARD. THIS PARTICULAR VEHICLE IS A 1996 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN SE [XXX]. POSSIBLY SEVERAL BRANDS OF VEHICLE HAVE THIS ENGINEERING DESIGN PROBLEM. THE RESPONSE THAT I GOT FROM CHRYSLER WHEN I ASKED ABOUT REPLACEMENT PARTS IS THAT THE WARRANTY IS FOR THREE YEARS, AND AFTER THAT "TOUGH." THEIR E-MAIL RESPONSE IS ATTACHED. ON 12/5/2002, MY HUSBAND & I WERE SITTING AT A RED LIGHT IN OUR 1996 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN WHEN WE WERE REAR-ENDED BY A FORD TAURUS. THE CABLE HOOKS DIRECTLY TO THE LATCH PLATE AND WHEN THE BELT BUCKLE IS CONNECTED TO THE LATCH PLATE THE PLATE'S FORWARD MOVEMENT PULLS THE CABLE CAUSING THE SHOULDER BELT'S RETRACTOR TO LOCK. THIS CABLE CONNECTION HAS SEPARATED FROM THE LATCH PLATE (CABLE END IS ALSO FRAYED WITH THREE STRANDS LEFT ON IT'S END), RENDERING THE SHOULDER BELTS, RETRACTOR ASSEMBLY UNLOCKABLE. THIS IS A VERY UNSAFE CONDITION FOR ANY CHILDS LIFE IF VEHICLE IS IN AN ACCIDENT AND SHOULDER BELTS DO NOT RESTRAIN THE CHILD IN THE SEAT LIKE IS SUPOSSED TO. THERE WERE NO OBSTICLES IN THAT AREA AND EVEN THE DEALERSHIP AGREED THAT IT IS A BROKEN CABLE. MY SEAT IS PROBABLY THE OLDEST OF THESE INTEGRATED SEATS AND I'M CONCERNED THAT THE CABLE WOULD WEAR AND JUST BREAK ON SEATS THAT ARE BUILT IN. DODGE HAS AGREED TO REPLACE THE NECESSARY PART IF I PAY FOR THE LABER. THE TOTAL COST IS ABOUT $650 OF WHICH I WILL HAVE TO PAY ABOUT $120. I'M CONCERNED THAT OTHERS MAY ALSO BE HAVING THIS PROBLEM. I BELIEVE THIS WAS A DEFECT FROM THE GEN 3 SEAT BELT. I FEEL EITHER HER OWN CAR SEAT OR THAT OF HER BROTHER NEXT TO HER RUBBED ON THE RELEASE BUTTON. I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF A 1996 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN, VIN NUMBER [XXX]. A WEEK AGO FRIDAY I HAD A TIRE BLOWOUT THIS IS ONLY THE SECOND TIME SINCE I HAVE OWNED THE VEHICLE THAT I HAVE NEEDED TO CHANGE A FLAT TO MY SPARE TIRE AND ALSO USE THE SCISSOR JACK THAT THE FACTORY SUPPLIED WITH MY VEHICLE. I WAS USING YOUR FACTORY SUPPLIED JACK TO RAISE THE VEHICLE WHEN THE JACK APPARENTLY SLIPPED AND THE VEHICLE FELL TO THE GROUND. I PROCEEDED TO EXTRICATE THE JACK AND LOOKED IT OVER AND IT APPEARED TO BE IN EXCELLENT SHAPE WITH NO INDICATIONS OF ANY DAMAGE; I CONCLUDED THAT THE JACK SOMEHOW SLIPPED. I AGAIN INSERTED THE JACK UNDER THE VEHICLE AND PROCEEDED TO AGAIN JACK UP THE VEHICLE WHEN THE JACK COLLAPSED AGAIN. UPON GATHERING UP MY THINGS I NOTED THAT THE JACK DID NOT SLIP, BUT FAILED AND THAT CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO FALL TO THE GROUND. THE JACK FAILURE WAS IN THE UPPER INSIDE SUPPORT WHEN YOU LOOK AT IT AND INSERT THE SCISSOR JACK UNDER THE VEHICLE WHEN THE SCISSOR JACK LIFTS THE JACK UP. I SHOWED THE FAILED JACK TO A WELDER FRIEND OF MINE WHO KNOWS ABOUT METALS, AND HE STATED THAT THE PROBLEM WAS METAL FATIGUE AND THAT THAT PART OF THE JACK WAS NOT PROPERLY MANUFACTURED BECAUSE THE METAL WAS NOT CURED AND HARDENED PROPERLY TO ACQUIRE ITS NEEDED STRENGTH. FIRST I EXPECT A NEW REPLACEMENT JACK THAT WILL FIT INTO THE STORAGE COMPARTMENT MADE FOR IT SO THAT I WILL HAVE A FACTORY JACK WHENEVER I DECIDE TO GET A NEW VEHICLE AND THE PERSON WHO BUYS MY VEHICLE NEXT WILL HAVE A GOOD, SAFE, FACTORY JACK WHENEVER NEEDED. SECOND I EXPECT TO BE REIMBURSED THE $20.00 I GAVE THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER WHO HELPED ME OUT WHEN THE SCISSOR JACK FAILED AND BECAME BROKEN AND USELESS. SINCE THE FIRST WEEK THAT I OWNED THIS CAR. WHENEVER I RUN THE AIR CONDITIONER, THE CAR WILL STALL OUT. AT FIRST, I COULD RESTART THE CAR READILY. LATER, IT TOOK SEVERAL TRIES TO RESTART IT. NOW I KNOW THAT I HAVE TO WAIT SEVERAL MINUTES IN ORDER TO RESTART IT. I MUST LEAVE THE AIR CONDITIONER OFF, IF I WANT THE CAR TO CONTINUE RUNNING. I HAVE REPORTED THIS TO THE DEALER MORE TIMES THAN I CAN COUNT, AND THEY DID SOME ENGINE ADJUSTMENTS WHICH NEVER SOLVED THE PROBLEM. APPARENTLY THERE WAS A TSB ON THIS PROBLEM, BUT NO SOLUTION HAS BEEN FOUND. WHEN THE AIR CONDITIONER IS RUNNING, IT DOESN'T MATTER WHETHER I'M DRIVING IN STOP AND GO TRAFFIC OR WHETHER I'M AT SPEED. IT WILL HAPPEN. SO, THE WAY TO AVOID THE PROBLEM IS NOT TO USE THE AIR CONDITIONER. BUT I BOUGHT THE CAR WITH AIR CONDITIONING, AND I'M ENTITLED TO HAVE WHAT I PAID FOR. MY CONSCIENCE TELLS ME THAT I HAVE TO PROTECT OTHER DRIVERS ON THE ROAD, SO I DON'T RUN IT . CHRYSLER HAS A REGISTERED COMPLAINT FROM ME AND OTHER PEOPLE, AS WELL, ABOUT THIS PROBLEM. I WAS TRAVELLING ON THE FREEWAY AT ABOUT 70 MPH WHEN THE TREAD BLEW OFF THE LEFT REAR TIRE. IT HAPPENED WITH THE RIGHT REAR TIRE ABOUT A MONTH AND A HALF AGO THE SAME WAY. THE TREAD WAS NOT WORN, THE TUBE WAS INTACT, BUT THE TREAD WAS COMPLETELY SEPARATED FROM THE TIRE. THE FIRST TIME IT BROKE MY BRAKE LIGHT AND DENTED MY REAR FENDER AND BUMPER. THE VEHICLE WAS IN THE MIDDLE LANE AT THE TIME AND IF THE ROAD HAD BEEN BUSIER THE POTENTIAL EXISITED FOR A MAJOR ACCIDENT AND POSSIBLE INJURY/DEATH. THE VEHICLE HAD APPROXIMATELY 98,100 MILES ON IT AT THE TIME (3.3L ENGINE). THIS FAILURE MAY BE RELATED TO CHRYSLER TSB 09-008-01 WHICH DISCUSSES CAMSHAFT FAILURE WITH CAMSHAFT BEARING WEAR. I WOULD LIKE TO SEE DAIMLER/CHRYSLER "STEP UP TO THE PLATE" ON THE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS SITUATION AND CORRECT THE PROBLEM PRIOR TO THE FAILURE OCCURING. I WILL BE CONTACTING D/C TO PURSUE REIMBURSEMENT FOR THE NEW ENGINE AS AN EVENT LIKE THIS SHOULD NOT OCCUR.

THE VEHICLE LOST ITS POWER STEERING, COOLING SYSTEM, ETC. WHEN THE TENSIONER WENT BAD AND THE ENGINE BELT CAME OFF. MY LOCAL SERVICE STATION ADVISED THEY HAVE HAD TO REPLACE NUMEROUS TENSIONERS ON THIS MAKE/MODEL, AND THEY'RE SURPRISED THERE HASN'T BEEN A RECALL - ESPECIALLY CONSIDERING THE DANGER INVOLVED. THE DEALER (HERB GORDON DODGE) ADVISED THAT THERE IS NO PROBLEM WITH THE TENSIONER, AND THAT IT IS "NORMAL WEAR" FOR IT TO GO BAD AT 76,000 MILES. IN CASE THE PROBLEM IS NOT UNIQUE, I WANTED TO REPORT IT. I HAVE HAD NUMEROUS PROBLEMS WITH THIS VEHICLE.

ON DECEMBER 05/2002 MY 1996 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN CAUGHT ON FIRE. THE CAR WAS JUST WARMING UP PRIOR TO BEING USED TO TAKE MY KIDS TO SCHOOL. I HAVE PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE NEW AND HAVE HAD NOTHING BUT CONTINUAL PROBLEMS WITH IT. I HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE BRAKES SINCE IT HIT 24,000 MILES. I WAS TOLD BY A CHRYSLER SHOP THAT THERE WAS A ROCK IN THE ROTOR THE FIRST TIME. THEY REPLACED THE ROTOR AND PAD ON THE LEFT FRONT THE FIRST TIME. THEN 11,000 MILES LATER I HAD SIMILAR PROBLEMS WITH THE BRAKES AND HAD TO HAVE BOTH LEFT AND RIGHT ROTORS TURNED . I WAS TOLD THAT THEY WERE WARPED. AGAIN I HAVE HAD MORE PROBLEMS. AT 49,000 MILES I HAD NO FRONT BRAKES AT ALL, THEY WERE METAL TO METAL. I BROUGHT THE VAN TO MY LOCAL MECHANIC BECAUSE IT WAS NOT UNDER WARRANTY. HE INSPECTED THE BRAKES AND TOLD ME THAT THE ROTORS AND THE PADS HAD TO BE REPLACED, THAT THERE WAS NO FRONT BRAKES AT ALL. HE DID THE WORK AND REPLACED THE BRAKES AND ROTORS. MY MECHANIC KNOWS OF THE PROBLEMS THAT I HAVE HAD WITH THE BRAKES ON THE VEHICLE AND SAYS THAT IT IS CRAZY FOR ME TO HAVE TO REPLACE THESE BRAKES AS MANY TIMES AS I HAVE. HE FEELS THAT THE PROBLEMS ARE IN THE ABS AND THAT IT IS MALFUNCTING. I RECENTLY HAD MY SNOW TIRES PUT ON MY VEHICLE AND ASKED THE MECHANIC TO CHECK MY BRAKES FOR ME. I WAS TOLD THAT MY LEFT FRONT HAS HALF OF THE PADS GONE AND THAT THERE IS SOME WEAR ON THE RIGHT FRONT. SINCE I HAVE HAD THE BRAKES REPLACED IN JUNE 1999, EVERY 3,000 MILES WHEN I HAVE MY OIL CHANGED I HAVE MY BRAKES CHECKED. I AM LOOKING AT REPLACING THESE PADS AGAIN, THEY HAVE APPROXIMATELY 6,000 MILES ON THEM AND I CAN'T AFFORD TO HAVE MY FAMILY AND FRIEND RIDE IN THIS VEHICLE. IN REGARDS TO MY OTHER COMPLAINTS, I HAVE HAD CONTINUAL PROBLEMS WITH THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. FOUR DAYS LATER, WE WERE HEADING BACK TO CHARLESTON (100 MILES) AND HAD MADE IT AROUND 40 MILES ON INTERSTATE GOING AROUND 65-70 MILES AN HOUR WHEN, WITHOUT NOTICE, THE SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT STARTED BLINKING AND THE CAR COMPLETELY LOST POWER . WE HAD TO PULL OVER ON THE SIDE OF THE EMERGENCY LANE AND WAIT UNTIL A TOW TRUCK COULD TOW US BACK TO LEXINGTON ... THE VAN WAS TAKEN AGAIN TO NASCO WHERE THEY THOUGHT THE PROBLEM COULD BE THE SPARK PLUGS AND WIRING SO THEY CHANGED ALL THAT OUT TO THE TUNE OF $400.00 PLUS THE $80.00 FOR TOWING... SECOND ISSUE IS THE TENSIONER AND WATER PUMP WITHIN THE COOLING SYSTEM. I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THEM EACH TWICE IN THE LAST YEAR. IT APPEARS TO BE A CHRONIC PROBLEM.

TO TURN THEM OFF I MUST TURN IT ON AND THEN OFF AGAIN. 2.WHEN FRONT WIPERS ARE PLACED IN THE HIGH POSITION THEY WILL GO OFF BY THEMSELVES LEAVING ME UNABLE TO SEE. TO MAKE THEM GO BACK ON I MUST TURN IT OFF AND THEN BACK ON. HAVE HAD IT AT THE DEALERS NUMEROUS TIMES TO NO AVAIL. THEY CHANGE A PART BUT DON'T FIX THE PROBLEM. 2. WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS THE BELT WILL FRAY AND JUST FALL APART LEAVING ME WITH NO POWER STEERING AND NO ACCELERATOR OR GENERATOR. THIS IS DANGEROUS BECAUSE I TRAVEL WITH MY 3 SMALL CHILDREN ON RURAL HIGHWAYS AND DRIVING ON ONLY WHATEVER POWER IS IN THE BATTERY AND WITHOUT THE POWERSTEERING THE VAN BECOMES ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO STEER. MY DEALER HAS INFORMED ME THAT IT IS THE TENSION PULLEY AND THAT IT IS A PROBLEM FOR A LOT OF PEOPLE AND WHEN ASKED IF IT WAS A RECALLED PART HE INFORMED US IT WAS NOT BUT SHOULD BE. IT IS A PART THAT CAN NOT BE CHANGED BY US(THERE ARE NO INSTRUCTIONS IN THE MECHANICS MANUAL WE WERE GIVEN). WE CALLED CHRYSLER AND WAS INFORMED THAT WE HAD TO HAVE THE DEALER REPLACE THIS PART AT A COST OF $90 FOR THE TENSION PULLEY PLUS LABOR. THE FUEL PUMP PROBLEM WAS DIAGNOSED ON 11-27-96, HOWEVER, THE VAN HAD BEEN TOWED INTO DODGE DEALERSHIPS ON TWO PRIOR OCCASSIONS, BEGINNING 11-11-96. INITIALLY NO PROBLEM COULD BE FOUND. THE VAN HAD DIED WHILE DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE. ABOUT TWO WEEKS LATER, THE VAN DIED AGAIN IN CITY TRAFFIC. SPARK PLUG WIRES WERE REPLACED. THE NEXT DAY THE VAN DIED AGAIN IN CITY TRAFFIC. ULTIMATELY, THE FUEL PUMP AND FILTER WERE REPLACED. EACH TIME THE VAN NEEDED TOWING TO THE NEAREST DEALERSHIP. ON 10-14-99, THE VAN MADE A POPPING NOISE WHILE BEING DRIVEN AT 40 MPH ON A COUNTRY ROAD. I STOPPED THE VAN AND DISCOVERED TRANSMISSION FUID LEAKING FROM UNDER THE ENGINE. I CALLED A TOW TRUCK AND HAD IT TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP. THERE HAD BEEN NO WARNING PRIOR TO THE POP AND SUBSEQUENT LEAKAGE. THE DEALER REPORTED THAT THE TRANSMISSION NEEDED REPLACING. Rubber fuel line in main engine bay is leaking fuel and cracked I have seen others that have burned down for this issue. MY 1996 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN HAS THE SERPENTINE BELT ISSUE. IT FALLS OF IF IT RAINS. THIS PROBLEM IS DUE TO A DESIGN FLAW FROM DODGE. THEY USED SMOOTH PULLEYS INSTEAD OF GROVED. THERE ARE TWO MAJOR PROBLEMS WITH MY 1996 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN. FIRST THERE IS A SERIOUS VIBRATION IN THE FRONT WHEEL/TIRES. I HAVE REPLACED 8 TIRES (IN 30000 MILES!), BOTH FRONT AXLES, ALL THREE MOTOR MOUNTS, AND HAD THE TRANSMISSION OVERHAULED, AS WELL AS HAVING THREE ALIGNMENT CHECKS. THE VIBRATION IS STILL THERE. THE SECOND PROBLEM INVOLVES THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS. THE FRONT WIPERS WERE, FOR A TIME, COMING ON ANY TIME THEY FELT LIKE IT; THIS WAS REMEDIED BY REPLACING THE MULTI FUNCTION SWITCH ON 09/21/01. SINCE THEN, THE REAR WIPER WILL OCCASIONALLY COME ON FOR ONE SWIPE WHEN I FIRST START THE VEHICLE - ANNOYING, BUT NOT AN IMMEDIATE HAZARD. BUT TODAY, MY WINDSHIELD WIPERS QUIT WORKING AT ALL. THEY WILL ONLY WORK IF I PUT THE WIPERS ON INTERVAL - IN WHICH CASE THEY DO NOTHING FOR A TIME, THEN MAKE TWO TO FOUR SWIPES, THEN WAIT A WHILE, MAKE ONE OR TWO SWIPES, WAIT A WHILE, ETC. THEY WILL MAKE ONE HIGH SPEED SWIPE ACROSS THE WINDSHIELD IF I PRESS THE WASHER BUTTON IN. I SPENT $80 TODAY SO THE DODGE DEALER COULD TELL ME THIS WAS CAUSED BY A BODY CONTROL MODULE FAILURE. THIS REPAIR COSTS OVER $400...AND RESEARCHING A USED PART ONLINE, I LEARNED THAT BOTH THE WHEEL SHIMMY PROBLEM AND THE WINDSHIELD WIPER PROBLEMS ARE NOT UNIQUE TO MY CAR BUT ARE VERY COMMON ISSUES WITH THE DODGE CARAVAN/CHRYSLER TOWN & COUNTRY/PLYMOUTH VOYAGER FAMILY. THE REAR HATCH IS DAMAGED FROM CLOSING THE DOOR, LOOKS LIKE I WAS HIT IN THE REAR, BUT HAVE NOT BEEN. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS ON FOR MONTHS IN FALL '03, NO MECHANIC COULD SAY WHY. WANTED TO GET THE A/C CHARGED BUT IT WOULDN'T HOLD A CHARGE. DEALER COULDN'T FIGURE IT OUT. TOOK IT TO ANOTHER MECHANIC WHO SAID THE A/C UNIT WAS TOTALLY MELTED. HAD IT REPLACED AND THEN THE COMPUTER RESET. REPLACED THE TRANSMISSION AT 100000, THE "PLANTATARY GEARS" WERE CRACKED. WE TOOK OUR 1996 GRAND CARAVAN IN FOR RECALLS THAT DODGE SENT US. THEY CALLED MY WIFE BACK AND TOLD HER IT WAS CONDEMNABLE AND UNSAFE TO DRIVE, BECAUSE THE STRUT TOWER WAS VERY BADLY RUSTED. BY THE TIME I HAD THE CHANCE TO CALL THEM, BECAUSE I WAS AT WORK, THE PERSON SHE TALKED TO HAD LEFT, HOWEVER I DID TALK TO ANOTHER PERSON ACQUAINTED WITH THE VEHICLE. HE SAID BECAUSE OF THE MILEAGE AND THAT I WASN'T THE ORIGINAL OWNER DODGE WOULDN'T DO ANYTHING FOR US. HE ALSO SAID IT WOULD COST $2000.00 PER SIDE TO FIX AND THE VAN WASN'T WORTH IT. I SAID THIS IS A SERIOUS THING AND IT SHOULD BE FIXED BY CHRYSLER BECAUSE THEY OBVIOUSLY USED INFERIOR MATERIALS ON THAT PART OF THE VAN. HE SAID THAT THEY WOULD NOT FIX IT, AND THE WEATHER WHERE WE LIVE HAD SOMETHING TO DO WITH IT. I SAID SO I AM JUST OUT OF A VEHICLE TO DRIVE?, AND HE SAID YOU CAN DRIVE IT BUT IT'S NOT SAFE. NOW THE OTHER MAN TOLD MY WIFE THAT IF SHE HIT A HOLE OR WENT OVER RR TRACKS IT COULD COME COMPLETELY THROUGH AND SHE WOULD LOSE TOTAL CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. THE AUTO BODY MAN WE TOOK IT TO SAID THAT THE PART SHOULD HAVE BEEN GALVANIZED WHEN THEY MADE IT AND THIS WOULDN'T BE HAPPENING. ANOTHER THING I WOULD LIKE TO NOTE IS THAT OUR 1994 CARAVAN DID NOT HAVE THIS PROBLEM AND IT HAD OVER 270,000 MILES ON IT. ALSO THIS 1996 DOES NOT HAVE RUST ANYWHERE ELSE. SOMEONE IS GOING TO GET HURT OR KILLED IF THEY DON'T RECALL THESE AND FIX THEM. THEY RECALLED A CLOCK SPRING FOR THE AIRBAG, AND THEY DIDN'T ASK THE MILEAGE OF OUR VEHICLE, AND THEY PERFORMED ALL THE OTHER RECALLS ON IT THAT DAY SO THEY COULD GET THERE MONEY, BUT THEY WON?T DO ANYTHING ABOUT A SUSPENSION COMPONENT THAT IS LIFE THREATENING. FOR 3 SUMMERS IN A ROW, WE HAVE HAD TO RECHARGE THE AIR CONDITION SYSTEM FOR IT TO ONLY WORK 3-4 WEEKS AT A TIME. OUR MECHANIC SAYS THAT IT ISN'T THAT THE AIR CONDITING UNIT HAS FAILED IT SEEMS TO BE LOOSING THE FREON SOME WHERE.THE LOCKS ON THE VAN TO THE TAIL GATE DOESN'T SEEM TO WORK CORRECTLY, 90% OF THE TIME YOU HAVE TO BEAT ON THE LOCK FROM THE OUT SIDE FOR IT TO UNLOCK. WE HAVE ALSO REPLACED THE BRAKE PAD APPROX 3 TIMES AND THEY STILL SQUEAK AND SEEM TO GRAB AT TIMES.

SO WHEN I GOT UNDER THE HOOD TO FIND OUT WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS, IT WAS THE BELT IT WAS NOT BROKEN JUST OFF TRACK. HAD IT FIXED. THE SAME THING HAPPENED AGAIN ON OCTOBER 25, 2003 SOME 3-4 WEEKS LATER. I HAVE A GRAND CARAVAN ES PURCHASED NEW IN 1996. ABOUT TWO YEARS AGO THE AIR BAG, CRUISE CONTROL AND THE HORN ALL QUIT AT ONCE. BEING UNDER EXTENDED WARRANTY I RETURNED THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER. THE DEALER DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS A BROKEN CLOCK (SP.) SPRING LOCATED BEHIND THE AIR BAG. THIS DEVICE APPARENTLY AFFECTS ALL THREE NON-WORKING SYSTEMS, AND WAS NOT A WARRANTY ITEM, $350 TO FIX. BODY CONTROL MODULE FAILURE OCCURRED DURING A MOVE FROM MARYLAND TO GEORGIA, RESULTING IN FAILURE OF WINDSHIELD WIPERS DURING RAINSTORM. ARRIVED AT DEALER ONLY 451 MILES AFTER EXPIRATION OF 75K WARRANTY. HOWEVER, NEITHER THE DEALER NOR CHRYSLER WOULD ASSIST IN REPAIR COSTS. HAVE SUBMITTED TWO LENGTHY VOQ'S TODAY AS I AM FINALLY FED UP WITH THIS CHRYSLER PRODUCT AND THE FAILURE OF CHRYSLER AND THE NHTSA TO ENACT ADDITIONAL FORCED RECALLS OF THESE VEHICLES. THE TRANSMISSION, FUEL TANK, BODY CONTROL MODULE, CLOCK SPRING (WHICH RESULTED IN INOPERATIVE AIRBAGS), AND SUSPENSION PARTS ALL FAILED LONG BEFORE THEY SHOULD HAVE. ADDITIONALLY, A CURSORY SEARCH OF BOTH NHTSA AND OTHER WEB SITES REVEALS THAT THESE PARTS HAVE A HIGH FAILURE RATE. DESPITE BEING REPLACED BY A DEALER ONLY TWO YEARS AGO, THE STEERING RACK ON MY MINIVAN IS ALREADY FAILING AGAIN. I AM EXTREMELY UNIMPRESSED WITH BOTH THE QUALITY OF THIS VEHICLE AND THE LACK OF SUPPORT FROM CHRYSLER IN ADDRESSING REPEATED FAILURES.

IN OCTOBER OF 1999, OUR VAN WAS OVERHEATING AND WE HAD TO HAVE THE RADIATOR FAN RELAY REPLACED. TWO WEEKS LATER WE RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE AND WERE REIMBURSED BY DAIMLER CHRYSLER. I HAVE HAD MY SERPENTINE BELT AND TENSIONER REPLACED TWICE, ONCE AT 32000 (UNDER WARRANTY) AND ONCE AT 73000 MILES. DEAR NHTSA, PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS PROBLEM. WE HAVE HAD THIS VAN ONLY 7 MONTHS!!! WE HAVE A 1996 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN SE THAT HAS 97,000 MILES ON THE ODOMETER. WE TOOK A TRIP IN THE LAST WEEK TO CALIFORNIA TO SEE OUR DAUGHTER WHEN THE ENGINE CHECK LIGHT CAME ON. EVEN THOUGH WE COULD NOT SEE OR HEAR ANY PROBLEMS, WE TOOK IT TO A DEALER IN RENO, NEVADA - (3223 MILL ST, RENO, NV 89502 -- #(775)-323-3106). THEY SAID THAT THE SPARK PLUGS NEEDED REPLACING. AT A COST OF 300 DOLLARS, WE AGREED IN HOPES THAT THE LIGHT PROBLEM WOULD BE CURED EVEN THOUGH NOTHING SEEMED WRONG. AFTER PICKING UP THE VEHICLE THE NEXT MORNING, WE NOTICED THAT THE VAN WAS RUNNING TERRIBLY AND WOULD DIE WHEN STOPPED. FRUSTRATED THAT "NO" PROBLEM WITH OUR VAN PROGRESSED TO WORSE WE RETURNED TO THE DEALER AND ASKED THEM TO CHECK IT AGAIN. AFTER TESTING IT AGAIN, THEY SAID THE CAMSHAFT HAD TO BE REPLACED. SINCE WE HAD TO RETURN HOME FOR WORK, WE COULD NOT WAIT TO GET IT FIX. ON RETURNING HOME WE TOOK IT INTO OUR TRUSTED MECHANIC IMMEDIATELY. I QUESTION THE NEED FOR A NEW FUEL TANK I PAID FOR - 594.31 PARTS AND LABOR. THE TANK ONLY LEAKED WHEN IT WAS FULL, AND WHEN I QUESTIONED THE SERVICE REP, HE REPLIED THAT THE "TANK IS MADE OF PLASTIC AND CAN CRACK JUST FROM THE SLOSHING OF FUEL." NOT A GOOD REASON. AND NOW I HAVE A RECALL FOR THE SAME PROBLEM I DESCRIBED TO THE SERVICE REP. I THOUGHT THE "KNOWN PROBLEM" WITH THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS WAS FIXED WHEN THE DEALER REPLACED A WINDSHIELD THAT HAD BEEN SCRATCHED BY "IMPULSIVE WIPERS." NOT SO. THE BUILT-IN CHILD SEAT GETS STUCK WITH THE CHILD IN THE SEAT AND WHEN THE SEATS ARE CLOSE AND THEN A CHILD CANT GET IN THEM. CHRYSLER DID A RECALL AND INSTALLED A SAFTY CLIP TO ADDRESS GETTING THE CHILD OUT. BUT THE PROBLEM CONTINUES THAT YOU CANT USE THE SEAT WHEN THE GET STUCK IN THE CLOSED POSITION SO YOU CANT PUT A CHILD IN THE SEAT. ALSO NOTE CHRYSLER HAS CHANGE THE MECHINISM ON NEWER VANS. THEY GAVE A AN ESCAPE ROUTE NOT A FIX TO THE PROBLEM OF THE BELTS GETTING STUCK DUE TO FOOD FALLING IN THE LOCK AREA. REMEBER WE ARE TALKING ABOUT A CHILD SEAT. I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE OCTOBER OF 1995, IN MARCH OF 96 THE FUSE BLOCK HAD TO BE REPLACED ALONG WITH A MULTI FUNCTION SWITCH BECAUSE THE WIPERS WOULD COME ON BY THEMSELVES WHILE I WAS DRIVING, A CONTACT AND PLUNGER KIT BECAUSE THE RIGHT SLIDING DOOR WOULD NOT ALWAYS UNLOCK WHEN USING THE UNLOCK BUTTON, THE FUEL TANK WAS REPLACED BECAUSE IT ONLY HELD 12 GALLONS OF GAS WHEN IT WAS SUPPOSED TO HOLD 18 - 20, THE TANK WAS INSTALLED SO THAT THE TANK WAS BOWED IN THE MIDDLE AND THE FRONT DOOR PANEL WAS REATTACHED TO THE DOOR AND THE LEFT SLIDING DOOR WAS REPAIRED BECAUSE IT WOULD NOT UNLOCK WITH THE KEY. IN AUGUST OF 1997 THE SWITCH FOR THE INTERIOR LIGHTS WAS REPLACED BECAUSE THE LIGHTS WOULD FLICKER, THE LEFT SIDE SLIDING DOOR LOCK WAS REPLACED AGAIN ALONG WITH THE REAR DOOR LATCH. IN SEPT. 0F 97 A GEAR WAS REPLACED FOR THE POWER STEERING, THE LEFT SLIDING DOOR HAD MOULDING REPLACED BECAUSE THE CLIPS WERE BROKEN. IN AUGUST OF 98 THE STEREO WAS REPLACED BECAUSE THE TREBLE WOULD FADE, THE VEHICLE SHUT OFF WHILE I WAS DRIVING NO ONE COULD EXPLAIN THIS PHENOMENON, THE RELAY SWITCH WAS REPLACED AND THE RACK AND PINION WAS REPLACED ALSO THE MULTI-FUNCTION SWITCH WAS REPLACED AGAIN. IN SEPT. OF 98 THE CAR WAS BACK IN THE SHOP BECAUSE THE AIR BAG LIGHT CAME ON. EVIDENTLY WHEN THEY REPLACED THE RELAY SWITCH JUST 7 DAYS EARLIER THINGS IN THE DASH STARTED WORKING THAT HAD NOT WORKED UP TIL THAT POINT FOR INSTANCE I WAS NOT AWARE THAT THE CHIME WOULD GO OFF IF THE BLINKER WAS LEFT ON FOR OVER A MILE. IT TOOK 7 DAYS TO GET MY CAR BACK BECAUSE THEY FOUND OUT THAT THERE WERE NEVER ANY SCREWS HOLDING THE AIR BAG IN THE MODULE SO AS FAR AS I KNOW FOR THE TWO YEARS THAT MY HUSBAND AND I WERE DRIVING THIS CAR THERE WAS NO PROTECTION BY AND AIR BAG. THIS PAST WEEK JULY 1, WE WERE ON VACATION AND WE HAD TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION TO THE TUNE OF $L771.
