“Domestic. Not Domesticated.”

Dodge is an American automobile brand owned by Stellantis, headquartered alongside its parent in Auburn Hills, Michigan. Founded by brothers John and Horace Dodge as a precision parts supplier to Ford in 1900, Dodge Brothers Motor Company built complete vehicles starting in 1914. After the deaths of both Dodge brothers in 1920, the company was acquired by Chrysler in 1928.

Dodge has been the muscle-car arm of its parent since the 1966 Charger and 1968 Challenger, and the brand currently produces some of the most powerful production vehicles ever sold. The Challenger SRT Demon 170 (2023) achieved 1,025 horsepower from a 6.2-liter supercharged Hemi V8 — the highest output of any production car at its launch — and the Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye matched that mission for sedans. The 2024 Charger Daytona EV launched as Dodge's first battery-electric muscle car.

Dodge's parent Stellantis trades on the NYSE under STLA. Recall data for every Dodge VIN is reported to NHTSA. EPA fuel-economy ratings, IIHS scores and J.D. Power studies provide independent benchmarks. ForCar.org decodes any Dodge VIN to surface trim, factory options, open recalls and original window-sticker MSRP.

Dodge heritage

John and Horace Dodge founded Dodge Brothers Company in 1900 in Detroit and supplied transmissions and engines to Olds Motor Vehicle Company and then Ford Motor Company. Both brothers died in 1920 — John from influenza in January, Horace from cirrhosis in December. The widows sold the company in 1925 to Dillon, Read & Co., which sold it to Walter Chrysler in 1928. The 1966 Charger and 1968 Challenger established Dodge as a muscle-car brand.

Market position

Dodge within Stellantis serves the American performance enthusiast segment with rear-wheel-drive muscle cars and high-performance SUVs. The Challenger and Charger competed with Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro for two decades, and the SRT Hellcat Redeye and Demon variants pushed power output beyond all production-car competitors. The 2024 transition to electric Charger Daytona variants extends muscle-car identity into Stellantis's STLA Large EV platform.
