TL* - THE CONTACT HAS A 1997 DODGE INTREPID THAT HE TOOK TO HIS LOCAL MECHANIC BECAUSE THE VEHICLE WAS LEAKING FUEL FROM THE FUEL RAIL SYSTEM. AT THE REPAIR FACILITY, THE MECHANIC STATED THAT THERE WAS A RECALL ON HIS VEHICLE AND TO TAKE IT TO THE DEALERSHIP (NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER : 98V184000. THE CONTACT TOOK VEHICLE TO DEALER ON 01/05/07, WHEN HE PICKED UP THE VEHICLE ON 01/15/07 THE DEALER STATED THAT THEY WOULD COVER THE LABOR, BUT NOT THE PART. THE CONTACT CALLED CHRYSLER CUSTOMER SERVICE IN REGARDS OF THE PART NOT BEING COVERED WHO STATED THAT IT WAS UP TO THE DEALER TO DECIDE REPAIR COSTS. THE CONTACT CAN PROVIDE COPIES OF INVOICE. DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THERE WAS A SMELL OF GASOLINE WHILE DRIVING ANY SPEED. THIS WAS ACCOMPANIED BY A KNOCKING NOISE IN THE ENGINE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A PRIVATE REPAIR SHOP, WHERE IT WAS DETERMINED THAT FUEL HAD LEAKED ON TO THE INTAKE MANIFOLD. THE O RINGS WERE REPLACED, AS WELL AS THE OIL SENDING UNITS. THERE WAS A NHTSA RECALL# 98V184000, WHICH PERTAINED TO THE FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL DUE TO THE VIN.

WE STARTED NOTICING A STRONG GAS SMELL IN OUR CAR AND BAD FUEL ECONOMY. THE SMELL WAS SO STRONG THAT IT WAS MAKING US SICK AFTER BEING IN THE CAR FOR MORE THAN 15-20 MINUTES. I TOOK THE CAR TO A SHOP AND THEY TOLD ME THAT IT THE "FUEL RAIL IS LEAKING AND THE FUEL INJECTION O-RINGS NEED TO BE REPLACED ALSO". THE SHOP CANNOT GET THE PARTS DUE TO A SHORTAGE. THEY SAID THAT THE PARTS ARE ONLY BEING USED FOR "SAFETY ISSUES FOR DEALERS FIRST". SO NOTHING IS BEING DONE TO FIX THE PROBLEM. WE NEED OUR CAR AND IT COULD POSSIBLY CATCH ON FIRE DUE TO THIS PROBLEM AND WE CANNOT GET IT FIXED. *JB

AFTER JUST DRIVING 65-70 ON THE I-15 IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, I FELT AN ODD VIBRATION AND PULL IN THE STEERING OF THE 1997 DODGE INTREPID I WAS DRIVING. EXITED THE HIGHWAY AND ATTEMPTED TO TURN INTO A BUSINESS PARKING LOT TO EXAMINE THE ISSUE WHEN THE FRONT END SENT A POP SOUND AND THE VEHICLE CAME TO A SCREECHING HALT. DRIVER SIDE FRONT WHEEL WAS STUCK IN A RIGHT TURN POSITION DURING ANY POSITION SET ON THE STEERING WHEEL, WHILE THE PASSENGER SIDE REMAINED INTACT AND NORMAL. *TR

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1997 DODGE INTREPID. WHILE ATTEMPTING TO OPERATE THE VEHICLE, THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE STEERING COLUMN WAS INOPERATIVE. A TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THE RACK AND PINION FRACTURED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. IN ADDITION, THE BOLT IN THE KIT OFFERED BY THE DEALER HAS A SMALLER HEAD AND AN IMPROPER LOCKING PAD THAT WOULD INEVITABLY LEAD TO A FAILURE. THE CONTACT IS IN THE PROCESS OF HAVING THE VEHICLE REPAIRED AND IS WAITING FOR A RESPONSE FROM THE DEALER. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 222,000.

PROBLEMS WITH THE RACK AND PINION STEERING HESITANT ON TURNS WHEN TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL. TOOK IT TO HAYWARD DODGE REPAIR THEY TOLD ME THAT I NEEDED A $4500.00 OF REPAIR THIS IS ALONG WITH SOME OTHER THINGS THEY SAY IS WRONG WITH THE VECH. THEY DIDN'T ACKNOWLEDGE THE MAIN PROBLEM OF THE STEERING . ALSO AFTER I PICKED UP THE VECH. I WAS DRIVING ON THE FREE WAY & MY HOOD FLEW OPEN & CAME THROUGH MY WINDSHIELD. I WAS CHARGED $135.00 FOR THIS 21 POINT INSPECTION. WITH MY HOOD &WINSHIELD DAMAGED I WENT BACK THE NEXT DAY, THE SERVICE MGR.TOLD ME TO TAKE HIM TO COURT THEY WONT TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE DAMAGE. *TR

RACK AND PINION STEERING BROKE ON OUR 1997 DODGE INTREPID WITH NO WARNING WHILE IT WAS BEING BACKED UP, IT WAS TOTAL STEERING FAILURE. WE HAVE OWNED THIS CAR SINCE NEW AND IT HAS NEVER BEEN AN ACCIDENT. THANK GOODNESS WE HAD ALREADY MADE IT TO OUR DESTINATION AND THIS HAPPENED BEFORE WE HEADED HOME. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED HOME AND IS STILL PARKED IN THE GARAGE UNTIL I CAN GET SOME INFO ON WHY THIS HAPPENED, AND HOW CAN IT BE PREVENTED. 1997 DODGE INTREPID, INNER TIE ROD BUSHING FAILED WHILE TAKING THE VEHICLE TO GET FRONT END ALIGNMENT, I WAS TOLD THE INNER TIE ROD BUSHINGS NEEDED REPLACING. I AM IN THE PROCESS OF REPAIRING THE BUSHING NOW. I HAVE FOUND ONE BUSHING COMPLETELY GONE EXCEPT FOR THE METEL BUSHING PART, AND THE OTHER NEARLY AS BAD, SUSPECT IT WOULD BE TOTALLY GONE IN ANOTHER MONTH OR TWO.

THE CONSUMER STATED THAT THE WATER PUMP HAS BEEN REPLACED ON TWO OCCASIONS, FROM 30,000 MILES TO 66,000 MILES. AT THE CURRENT MILEAGE, THE PROBLEM HAS REOCURRED. THE DEALER HAD BEEN NOTIFIED. THIS IS THE SECOND VEHICLE THAT HAS HAD A BLOW OUT WITH THE BRIDGESTONE TURANZA P215/65 R15 95T. I CALLED A LOCAL BRIDGESTONE-FIRESTONE DEALER AND ALL THEY SAID WAS THAT IT WASN'T ON THE LIST. THE FIRST VEHICLE WAS A 1997 DODGE INTREPID VIN [XXX] AND IT HAD THE PASSENGER FRONT TIRE BLOW. IT DID $1940. WORTH OF DAMAGE. ALL I'M ASKING IS SINCE IT ISN'T ON THE "LIST" MAYBE IT SHOULD BE. I WAS DRIVING HOME FROM WORK AND FELT A RUMBLE IN THE CAR, LIKE THE TIRES WERE OUT OF BALANCE. I CHECKED THE TIRES AT A GAS STATION BEFORE LEAVING AND ALL LOOKED FINE. THE RUMBLING GOT WORSE OVER THE COURSE OF THE DRIVE DOWN 95 SOUTH IN MASSACHUSETTS, UNTIL I GOT OFF 95 S AND WAS ON THE EXIT RAMP FOR 295 SOUTH WHEN I FELT AND HEARD WHAT SOUNDED LIKE A TIRE BLOW OUT. I INSTANTLY SLOWED DOWN AND GOT AS FAR TO THE RIGHT AS I COULD. ANOTHER MOTORIST HAD STOPPED IN FRONT OF ME THAT HAD SEEN THE WHOLE THING. HE GOT OUT MADE SURE I WAS ALRIGHT AND WHETHER OR NOT I HAD AAA (WHICH I HAD) AND HE TOLD ME THAT MY WHEEL ROLLED OFF INTO THE WOODS. AND SURE ENOUGH I LOOKED AT THE RIGHT FRONT TIRE AND THE CAR WAS RIDING ON THE ROTOR, WITH SOME DAMAGE TO THE WHEEL WELL AND THE PASSENGER DOOR OPENS WITH DIFFICULTY. UPON INSPECTION OF THE ROTOR, ALL 5 OF THE STUDS HAD SHEARED OFF AND THE LUGS WERE GONE. AAA AND THE MECHANICS AT MEINIKEE HAD NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THAT. AFTER RETRIEVING THE WHEEL, INSPECTION SHOWED THAT NONE OF THE HOLES IN THE RIM HAD BEEN OVALED. I HAD THE RIGHT FRONT TIRE CHANGED BY TOWN FAIR TIRE TWO MONTHS PRIOR AND IT WAS SUSPECTED THAT THE LUGS WERE EITHER LOOSE OR OVERTIGHTENED, HOWEVER TOWN FAIR TIRE IS LOOKING THE OTHER WAY BECAUSE I HAD DRIVEN 8,000 MILES SINCE THE TIRE WAS CHANGED. EVERYONE THAT LOOKED AT THE WHEEL THOUGHT THAT IT DIDN'T MAKE SENSE BECAUSE USUALLY WITH LOOSE LUGS ONE OR TWO OF THE LUGS LINGER BEHIND, NOT IN THIS CASE. MEINIKEE WAS ABLE TO SALVAGE THE WHOLE WHEEL AND ONLY HAD TO REPLACE THE HUB ASSEMBLY COSTING $311, NOT INCLUDING BODY DAMAGE. SHE WOULD HAVE LIVED HAD HER SEAT BELT NOT FAILED. HER SEAT WAS RECLINED AND AS A RESULT SHE SLID UNDER THE SEAT BELT CAUSING HER INJURIES. WHY IS THERE NO WARNING THAT THIS FAILURE CAN OCCUR? KIDS DO NOT READ THE OWNER?S MANUAL! WE FEEL THAT THE CASE MAKER IS RESPONSIBLE FOR HER DEATH BUT NO ONE WANTS TO HELP BECAUSE OF THE COST. WHAT CAN BE DONE TO HELP US? SINCERELY, CONSUMER COMPLAINANT STATED DURING A FOLLOW UP CALL THAT BOTH BELTED FRONT OCCUPANTS DIED AS A RESULT OF REAR ENDING A PARKED TRAILER WITH AN IMPACT SPEED OF APP. 40-45 MPH ACCORDING TO THEIR INVESTIGATOR. BOTH FRONTAL AIRBAGS DEPLOYED IN THE CRASH. THE MALE DRIVER'S HEAD IMPACTED THE TRAILERS SAFETY BAR RESULTING IN AN OPEN HEAD WOUND. THE FEMALE PASSENGER SLID UNDER THE SEAT BELT RESIDING ON THE FLOOR BOARD WITH AN INTERNAL HEAD WOUND AND A LACERATED HEART. IT WAS OBSERVED THAT THE PASSENGER'S BELT WAS BUCKLED AFTER THE CRASH. THE ANGLE OF THE PASSENGER'S SEAT WAS BETWEEN 1-2 O'CLOCK. THE DRIVER WAS PRONOUNCED DEAD A THE SCENE AND THE PASSENGER DIED THE FOLLOWING DAY. THE TRAILER WAS PARKED AT A WEIGHT STATION ON RAMP WHEN IT WAS STRUCK ON A SUNNY AFTER NOON AT ABOUT 4:00PM. THE POSTED SPEED ON THE TWO LANE HIGHWAY WAS 70 MPH. THE ROAD WAS STRAIGHT AND KNOWN TO THE DRIVER. DRUGS OR ALCOHOL WERE NOT A FACTOR. EYE WITNESS SAYS THE DRIVER WAS AWAKE AT THE TIME OF THE EVENT. IT IS NOT KNOWN WHY THE CRASH OCCURRED. OWNER PICKED VEHICLE UP & IT STARTED LEAKING FUEL IN MIDDLE OF ROAD & MADE PUFFING SOUNDS & FINALLY STALLED OUT. TOWED VEHICLE BACK TO DEALER. THE BRAKES WERE REPLACED AFTER BEING HARD TO APPLY. HAVE HAD REPEATED PROBLEMS WITH THIS CAR SINCE PURCHASE 2 YEARS AGO. WATER PUMP HAS BEEN REPLACED AT LEAST 3 TIMES. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT KEEPS COMING ON, UNABLE TO DETERMINE CAUSE. ROUGH IDLING SINCE WATER PUMP #2 - UNABLE TO DETERMINE CAUSE. POWER STEERING FAILURE. NUMEROUS MINOR PROBLEMS WITH INTERIOR/EXTERIOR THAT DO NOT SEEM TO STAY FIXED FOR ANY LENGTH OF TIME. (WE CONSIDER THIS CAR A LEMON!!!!)

CAR DRIFTED TO THE LEFT ON FLAT ROADS AND CROWNED HIGHWAYS-RIGHT LANE. DRIFT WAS SEVERE. FULL LANE CHANGE WITHIN 300 FT OR LESS. DEALER RESPONSE- ALL COMPONENTS SET TO MANUFACTURER'S SPECS. NOTHING HE CAN DO. LAST TRIP IN MARCH 1999 DEALER NOTICED WEAR ON TIRES AND ROTATED THEM. ALSO ORDERED POWER STEERING PUMP AND A STEERING IDLER ARM. CAR DOES NOT DRIFT ANYMORE. FRONT END HAS HAD A VIBRATION FROM DAY 1. DEALER CAN'T SEEM TO NOTICE IT OF FIND OUT THE CAUSE. CHANGED TIRES, ROTATED TIRES, CHECKED ON BRAKE DISCS, ETC. STILL NO FULL SOLUTION. VIBRATION IS LESS THE FIRST NOTICED BUT STILL PRESENT AT 5/24/99. SOME WAS CORRECTED 12/08/1997, MORE REMAINS. LIGHTS DO NOT SEEM TO BE BRIGHT ENOUGH OR THE THROW PATTERN IS WRONG. LEAVES BLIND, BARK AREAS IN FRONT OF CAR ESPECIALLY THE HIGH BEAMS. DEALER RESPONSE: LIGHTS ARE SET ACCORDING TO SPECS. THEY SEEM TO THROW LIGHTS MORE UPWARD-SHORT RANGE AND TO THE SIDES. TOOK CAR IN FOR ROUTINE OIL CHANGE, WHEN SERVICE TECH ATTEMPTED TO REMOVE THE DIPSTICK TO CHECK OIL LEVEL, THE YELLOW PLASTIC TOP BROKE OFF, PROHIBITING REMOVAL. HAD TO GO TO A LOCAL CHRYSLER DEALERSHIP TO PURCHASE NEW DIPSTICK AND HAVE BROKEN ONE REMOVED. ON THE SECOND ENTRY, THE TRUNK LID DID NOT STAY OPEN, AND HIT PERSON(S) PLACING ITEMS IN OR REMOVING ITEMS FROM TRUNK. AND ON THE THIRD ENTRY, THERE IS A CONSTANT FILM ON THE WINDSHIELD WHICH SEVERELY LIMITS CLEAR VISION AND ALSO CAUSES EXTREME GLARE, ESPECIALLY DURING NIGHT DRIVING. *AK
