THE CONTACT LIFTED THE HOOD AND NOTICED THE ODOR AS WELL AS FUEL LEAKING FROM UNDER THE VEHICLE. THERE WERE NO WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT A NEW MANIFOLD NEEDED TO BE INSTALLED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER AND DEALER WERE NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 129,000.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL MECHANIC WHO REPLACED THE O2 SENSOR, OIL SWITCH RELAY AND THE CAM SHAFT POSITION SENSOR. THE FAILURE WAS NOT CORRECTED AND THE VEHICLE COULD NOT BE DRIVEN. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT FURTHER REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 58,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE AS 59,000.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE HAVING A ROUTINE OIL CHANGED PERFORMED, THE MECHANIC ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THE OIL WAS TOO THICK TO BE RELEASED FROM THE VEHICLE. THE MECHANIC ADVISED THAT THE OIL PUMP FAILED AND WAS CAUSING A BACKUP OF OIL WITHIN THE VEHICLE. CAR WAS MAINTAINED IMMACULATELY, 3 WEEKS BEFORE THE DOA DATE, THERE WAS A VERY FAINT TICKING SOUND (LIKE A ROULETTE WHEEL SPINNING "CLICK" SOUND) COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD. TOOK THE CAR TO THE MECHANIC TO HAVE THE OIL CHANGED AND HAVE THE CARS NEW NOISE CHECKED. HE SAID IT COULD BE A LIFTER TICKING AND THE OIL CHANGE SOLVED THE PROBLEM. HE WAS CORRECT ABOUT THE SOUND MUTING HOWEVER THE ISSUE MAY BE THE TINY OIL PORT HOLES IN THESE MITSUBISHI MADE MOPAR ENGINES. ON THE DAY OF THE ENGINES DEATH IT MADE THE SAME TICKING SOUND, MY CUE THAT I COULD SHARE WITH ANYONE ABOUT TO HAVE THIS FAILURE OCCUR, WHEN I WOULD START THE CAR I NOTICED AN EXTRA "SPINNING" SOUND UNDER THE HOOD WHEN I WOULD START THE CAR. IT IS MINOR SO LISTEN CLOSE TO YOUR START-UP. THE TICKING GOT LOUDER AND EVENTUALLY AT A STOP LIGHT ON THE WAY TO THE MECHANIC THE CAR STOPPED AND WOULD NOT RUN. DO AN INTERNET SEARCH FOR DODGE INTREPID 2000 2.7 LITER MOTOR YOU WILL FIND A HORROR SHOW ON THE INTERNET. ALMOST LOST CONTROL OF THE STEERING WHILE DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE HIGHWAY. CAR STARTED SHAKING SO WE PULLED OF TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. THE INNER TIE ROD BUSHINGS WERE COMPLETELY GONE WITH JUST THE BOLT AND WASHER HOLDING THE TIE ROD ON THE STEERING RACK. HAD TO REPLACE THE INNER TIE RODS, BUT STILL NEED TO REPLACE THE STEERING RACK.

BACKING OUT OF A PARKING SPACE IN 2000 DODGE INTREPID ES WITH 140K MILES, THERE WAS A LOUD POP AND HAD COMPLETE LOSS OF STEERING IN THE FRONT LEFT WHEEL. THE BOLT THAT SECURES THE TIE ROD TO THE RACK AND PINION HAD COMPLETELY PULLED OUT OF THE RACK AND PINION. IF THIS HAD OCCURRED WHILE DRIVING, IT WOULD HAVE RESULTED IN A MAJOR ACCIDENT. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 DODGE INTREPID. WHILE DRIVING 50 MPH THE DOOR LOCK MECHANISM FAILED THREE TIMES AND THE LOCKS WERE REPLACED. THE DRIVER SIDE DOOR REQUIREED HIM TO APPLY PRESSURE TO OPEN AND CLOSE THE DOOR. THE ELECTRIC LOCKS WERE NOT WORKING. THE LOCKS MADE A GRINDING NOISE EVERY TIME TRYING TO OPEN AND CLOSE THEM. THE PASSENGERS REAR LOCK ALSO FAILED. THE FIRST TWO FAILURES OCCURRED WITHIN TWO WEEKS. WHEN HE WOULD PULL THE HANDLE AND ROLL THE WINDOW DOWN, NOTHING WOULD ALLOW HIM TO OPEN THE LOCKS. THE FAILURE OCCURRED IN NOVEMBER ON THE FIRST TWO DOORS. WHEN DRIVING OVER 50 MPH THE AUTOMATIC LOCK MADE A GRINDING NOISE. THE FRONT DRIVER DOOR LOCKED, AND THEREWAS NO WAY YOU COULD GET OUT. SOMETIMES THE NOISES WOULD ALLOW HIM TO EXIT. HE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER TO HAVE THE DOOR FAILURE DIAGNOSED, AND IT WAS REPAIRED IT FOR $600. APPROXIMATELY 2 YEARS AGO I HAD TO REPLACE THE ELECTRIC LOCKING MECHANISM ON THE REAR DRIVER SIDE DOOR OF MY 2000 DODGE INTREPID. THE UNIT BEGAN MAKING A LOUD, SHARP GRINDING NOISE WHEN THE CAR REACHED 15 MPH AND THE LOCK AUTOMATICALLY LOCKED. THE UNIT HAD TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE IT QUIT WORKING. NOW I FIND THE BOTH PASSENGER SIDE UNITS ARE MAKING THE SAME NOISE AND HAVE QUIT WORKING. INTERESTINGLY ENOUGH, THE REAR DOOR CANNOT BE MANUALLY UNLOCKED UNLESS THE MASTER CONTROL IS PUT IN THE UP POSITION FOR ALL DOORS, BUT THE FRONT UNIT IS OPPOSITE SO IT CAN'T BE UNLOCKED UNLESS THE MASTER CONTROL HAS BEEN PUT IN THE DOWN POSITION. THIS IS A REAL SAFETY ISSUE AND SOMETHING SHOULD BE DOWN ABOUT IT. I ESPECIALLY OBJECT TO THE COST OF REPLACING THESE MECHANISMS. *JB

IT IS UNDERSTANDABLE FOR WEAR PARTS SUCH AS BRAKES, SHOCKS AND SUSPENSION JOINTS TO FAIL DUE TO USE AND MILEAGE BUT FRAME MEMBERS SHOULD BE MADE SOLID AND THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE AUTO MANUFACTURER TO ENSURE LONG TERM RELIABILITY.

ANOTHER PROBLEM IS THE THE CLAMP ON THE PASSENGER SIDE TIE ROD DOES NOT CLEAR THE OPENING IN THE WHEEL WELL LINER AND LOOKS LIKE IT COULD HANG UP ON THE METAL EDGE. THE HEADLIGHTS HAVE MAINTAINED A YELLOWISH TINT TO THEM AND DRIVING AT NIGHT IS VERY HARD AS THE LIGHTING IS IMPAIRED. THIS HAS GONE ON FOR ABOUT 6 YEARS NOW. THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP WHERE PURCHASED HAS OFFERED TO BUFF AND CLEAN THEM AT $100.00. THERE ARE CRACKS IN THE PLASTIC COVERS. THE CAR HAS NOT BEEN IN A CRASH. ALTHOUGH WHEN WE TOOK CAR FOR 6000 MILE OIL CHANGE AN EMPLOYEE PARKED THE CAR BEHIND A DODGE TRUCK. THE OWNER OF THE TRUCK CHOSE TO LEAVE AND BACKED OVER THE FRONT END OF THE CAR. WE FINALLY WORKED OUT THE DETAILS AND HAD TO REPLACE THE HOOD AND FENDERS AT A LOCAL BODY SHOP AND WAS PAID FOR USE OF A RENTAL VEHICLE. THE INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR LIGHTS HAVE BEEN BLINKING OFF AND ON FOR ABOUT 5 YEARS NOW. I HAVE TAKEN THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP ON SEVERAL DIFFERENT OCCASIONS TO CHECK THE WIRING, SWITCHES, CONNECTIONS, ETC, BUT THEY ARE UNABLE TO FIND PROBLEM. IT DOESN'T MATTER IF THE LIGHTS ARE TURNED ON OR TURNED OFF-THE BLINKING OCCURS RANDOMLY DURING THE DAY OR NIGHT WHEN DRIVING. IT'S SCARY AT NIGHT AS OTHER DRIVERS MAY FEEL I AM FLASHING MY LIGHTS AT THEM. ORIGINALLY WHEN THE CAR WAS MADE THE RUBBER COVERING THE DOOR WINDOWS WAS FOR THE STRATUS SO I HAD TO HAVE THEM REPLACED. THEY HAVE NOT REMAINED IN PLACE SINCE THEM. THEY ARE CONSTANTLY COMING OFF. THE DEALERSHIP WANTS TO CHARGE ME FOR FIXING THE PROBLEM SO I HAVE JUST DEALT WITH IT. WHILE CAR WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY THE DRIVERS SEAT MECHANISM TO ADJUST FOR YOUR BACK FAILED AND WOULD COST ME OVER $800.00 TO FIX. SO I HAVE JUST LET IT GO. THE ISSUE IS THE PLASTIC COVER FOR THE HEADLAMPS HAVE UNDERGONE A MATERIAL FAILURE?THEY HAVE A SERIES OF MICRO-STRUCTURED CRACKS THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE PLASTIC COVER THAT SCATTERS A SIGNIFICANT PORTION OF THE LIGHT FROM LAMPS PREVENTING NORMAL FUNCTION AND GOOD VISION FOR THE DRIVERS. PLASTICS DO NOT CRACK ON THEIR OWN AND THIS EVENT IS NOT FROM AN ACCIDENT OR OTHER UNIQUE EVENT ON THIS CAR. I HAVE A PH.D. IN CHEMISTRY FROM HARVARD UNIVERSITY AND MY EXPERTISE IS IN MICRO/NANO-TECHNOLOGY. THIS EDUCATION WHICH IS UNIQUE HAS ENABLED ME TO INVESTIGATE THE REASON OF A ?HAZY? HEADLAMP COVER. THE DEALERSHIP MIS-DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AND INITIALLY SOLD A ?COSTLY? ($50 PLUS LABOR) CLEANER KIT. MICRO-CRACKS CANNOT BE FIXED BUT SUCH A METHOD AND WHEN I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP BACK TO EXPLAIN THE THIS WAS NOT DIRT OR A HAZE BUT CRACKS; THEY ADMITTED THEY DID NOT LOOK CLOSELY AT THE PROBLEM AND DID NOT KNOW WHAT TO DO AND SUGGESTED CALLING CHRYSLER DIRECTLY. I CONTACTED CUSTOMER SERVICE AT CHRYSLER WHO BASICALLY IGNORED MY COMMENT, SAID THAT THEY WOULD DO NOTHING ABOUT SUCH A CLAIM, AND TOLD ME SINCE THE CAR WAS TOO OLD I HAD TO PAY ALL EXPENSES OUT OF MY POCKET. I TURN TO YOU BECAUSE I DO NOT HAVE THE RESOURCES TO SEE IF THIS IS A LARGER PROBLEM; WHICH FROM MY EXPERIENCE WITH MATERIALS BELIEVE IT HAS TO BE. UNLIKE WITH BRAKE PADS OR OTHER CONSUMABLE/WEAR-DOWN ITEMS IN A CAR, THE PLASTIC COVERS FOR LIGHTS SHOULD NOT FAIL OVER TIME. SINCE THE CAR STILL RUNS AND THE LIGHTS ARE TECHNICALLY ON ALTHOUGH THE VISIBILITY IS GREATLY DIMINISHED, THEY MIGHT NOT REALIZE THEIR SAFETY IS AT RISK WITH DIMINISHED VISIBILITY. I ALSO BELIEVE THAT CRASH INVESTIGATORS DO NOT LOOK AT THE QUALITY OF THE PLASTIC COVERING THE HEADLAMPS AND THE POSSIBILITY OF MICRO-CRACKS LIMITING VISIBILITY BEFORE THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED. AT NIGHT I CAN BARELY SEE THE STREET AS THE YELLOWED COVERS SUBSTANTIALLY DECREASE THE AMOUNT OF LIGHT THE HEADLIGHTS CAN GIVE OFF. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THIS INHIBITS THE AMOUNT OF LIGHT. THE DEALER SAID THIS CONDITION CAME FROM THE HEAT ON THE HEADLIGHTS AND THEY HAVE A PROCESS TO CLEAN THE HEADLIGHTS. I HAVE 2000 INTREPID, THE HEADLIGHTS ARE BADLY DISCOLORED ALMOST AS IF THE LENS ARE MELTED. I HAVE SEEN A NUMBER OF OTHER DODGE VEHICLES WITH THE SAME PROBLEM, INTREPID, MINI VANS ETC. THIS IS SUCH A PROBLEM THAT DRIVING WITHOUT THE HIGH BEAMS AT NIGHT IS NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE DUE TO LACK OF LIGHT COMING THROUGH THE DEFECTIVE LENS. I ALSO OWN A 2004 DODGE DURANGO THAT WAS RESENTLY ROLLED OVER, THE ROADS WERE SNOW COVERED. I WAS TRAVELING 15 MPH MAX WHEN THE DURANGO SLIDE SIDEWAYS OFF THE ROAD AND THE BACK END STARTED TO SLIDE OVER A SMALL EMBANKMENT AND THEN ROLLED OVER, I DO NOT FEEL THAT IT WAS STEAP ENOUGH THAT THE DURANGO SHOULD HAVE OVERTURNED. I ALSO SPENT AROUND 2000.00 HAVING EVERY SINGLE SENSOR REPLACED, AS WELL AS ALL OF THE HOSES IN THE ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION. CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE OCCURRING UNEXPECTEDLY 1/07. PURCHASED A REBUILT ENGINE. SIX MONTHS LATER THE CAR STARTED TO STOP AT ANY SPEED, WHILE IDLING, AND 50% OF THE TIME WOULD NOT START AT ALL. HAD SEVERAL DEALERS DO DIAGNOSTICS BUT COULD NOT PINPOINT THE PROBLEM AS THE CAR WOULD RUN WHEN TAKEN TO THE SHOP. WAS INFORMED THAT IT MAY BE FUEL SENSOR, FUEL PUMP, OR FRIED MOTHERBOARD IN THE CAR'S COMPUTER. NEITHER REPAIR SHOPS DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENT COULD PINPOINT THE PROBLEM. FROM 11/07-4/08 THE CAR DID NOT HAVE THE PROBLEM. NOW IT HAS STARTED TO CUTOFF WHILE IN MOTION AGAIN. IT CUTS OFF ATLEAST THREE TIMES PER TRIP NOW, AND HASN'T NOR STARED IN ALMOST A WEEK. 2000 CHRYSLER INTREPID WITH LESS THAN 70,000 MILES USED PRIMARILY BY MY WIFE FOR WORK. (85 MILES PER DAY). CAR STARTED TO KNOCK. WE BROUGHT IT TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR INVESTIGATION AND WERE TOLD WE HAD AN ENGINE FAILURE. DEALERSHIP REPLACED SMALL BLOCK WITH WHAT I WAS TOLD AS BEING A NEW AS AN AFTER MARKET PART. WE STARTED TO HAVE OIL CHANGES DONE AT DEALERSHIP ONLY EVERY 3,000 MILES(ALTHOUGH OWNERS MANUAL STATES 7,000 FOR OUR THE TYPE OF DRIVING. AT LESS THAN 40,000 MILES THE ENGINE STARTED TO KNOCK AGAIN. DEALERSHIP WOULD NOT STAND BEHIND PRODUCT OR REPAIR AGAIN. I BROUGHT IT TO A LOCAL REPAIR SHOP THAT WAS RECOMMENDED TO ME BY A FRIEND IN THE BUSINESS. THIS REPAIR SHOP HAS HAD SOME LUCK WITH REPAIRING THE PROBLEM. UNFORTUNATELY FOR ME NOT THIS TIME. I HAVE CONTACTED CHRYSLER SEVERAL TIME WITH SAME RESULTS AS MENTIONED, SERVICE NOT PERFORMED BY DEALERSHIP TO BAD, I WAS ALSO TOLD THIS BY DALE FRANK THE SERVICE MANAGER AT THE DEALERSHIP. LATER, SAME DAY LEARNED THAT RACK WAS BROKEN AND PUMP WAS LEAKING AND COST WOULD BE A MINIMUM $2000 TO REPAIR. I OPTED TO GO TO ANOTHER MECHANIC AND HAD THE CAR TOWED AWAY FROM THE DEALER SHOP.

I PULLED OUT OF A PARKING LOT AND DROVE ABOUT TWO BLOCKS. MY SPEED WAS ABOUT 20 MPH. THERE WAS A RED LIGHT AHEAD AND I APPLIED MY BREAKS. INSTEAD OF STOPPING, MY 2000 DODGE INTREPID SPED UP. FIRST THE 2000 PICKUPS WERE SUPPOSE TO COME WITH TIRE SIZE P225R75-16 BUT THEY CAME WITH SIZE P245R75-16. AT ABOUT MILAGE 15,663. I NOTICED THE THE LEFT FRONT TIRE WAS RUBBING WHEN MAKING A SHARP LEFT TURN SO I TOOK IT IN TO THE DODGE DEALER HERE IN PLAIN VIEW. THEY FIRST TOLD ME THAT I HAD PUT OVERSIZE TIRES ON MY PICK UP AND THAT IS WHY IT WAS RUBBING. AFTER A LOT OF TALKING AND CHECKING IS WHEN I FOUND OUT THE THEY HAD PUT OVERSIZE TIRES ON THE 2000 MODEL 1/2 TON PICKUPS. THEY SENT THE PICKUP TO AN SHOP AND THE PICK UP STARTED PULL AT THAT TIME. IT HAS BEEN TO TWO OTHER ALINEMENT SHOPS AND THEY ALL SAY THAT IT IS WITHIN SPECS BUT PULLS HARD TO THE RIGHT. A FEW DAYS BEFORE THE FAILURE, WE NOTICED A VIBRATION IN THE FRONT OF THE CAR. WE THOUGHT IT WAS A BALANCE PROBLEM AND MADE ARRANGEMENTS TO HAVE IT RE-BALANCED. TWO DAYS BEFORE THAT APPOINTMENT, WE HAD A CATASTROPHIC BLOW-OUT AT HIGHWAY SPEED. (65 MPH) THE LEFT FRONT TIRE SEPARATED COMPLETLY WHERE THE TREAD JOINS THE SIDE WALL. THE CAR WAS CONTROLLED TO A STOP. WHEN WE CONTACTED GOOD YEAR, THEY SAID THERE WERE NO PROBLEMS WITH A BLOW OUT OF THIS TYPE AND WE WOULD BE COMPENSATED WITH A PRO-RATED DISCOUNT FOR ONE NEW TIRE, AS THERE WAS ONLY A 38% USAGE ON THE SEPARATED TIRE. MAYBE GOOD YEAR WOULD HAVE FELT DIFFERENTLY IF WE WERE KILLED IN A CRASH, RATHER THAN JUST LUCKY. DT

I HAD IT TOWED TO A DEALER THAT NIGHT AND AFTER REPEATED CALLS TO THEM THEY RESPONDED SIX DAYS LATER TELLING ME THE STARTER NEEDED REPLACING AND I NEEDED A NEW BATTERY. WHEN I CALLED TO FIND OUT WHEN IT COULD BE PICKED UP, THEY TOLD ME I HAD A SEASED ENGINE AND THEY DID COULD NOT TELL ME WHY. MY WARRANTY WAS FOR 7 YEARS OR 50,000 MILES; HOWEVER, I NOW HAD 60,000 MILES THERE FORE I AM NO LONGER COVERED AND MUST PAY $7000 FOR A NEW ENGINE. I OWE $13,000 ON MY CAR NOTE, THE DEALER TOLD ME TO PAY OF THE NOTE AND COME BUY ANOTHER CAR. I HAVE RESEARCHED AND FOUND NUMEROUS CASES OF SEASED ENGINES ON THE MODEL. THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL PROBLEMS WITH MY 2000 INTREPID 2.7L. I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE ALL THE DOOR LOCK MOTORS AT DIFFERENT TIMES, STARTING ALL THE WAY BACK FROM 1/8/04 AND THE FINAL ONE WAS JUST THIS MONTH (FEBRUARY.) I WAS HAVING AN ISSUE WITH THE CAR STALLING OUT WHILE I WAS DRIVING IT. SOME TIMES IT WOULD START BACK UP WHILE IT WAS STILL COASTING, OTHER TIMES IT WOULD TAKE A LONG TIME BEFORE IT WOULD START AGAIN, LEAVING ME SITTING ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. WHEN HOOKED UP TO A DIAGNOSTIC MACHINE IT WOULD NOT SHOW WHAT CAUSED THE MALFUNCTION. MY MECHANIC HAD TO CHANGE RANDOM CENSORS UNTIL WE FOUND THE CORRECT ONE. WHICH TURNED OUT TO BE THE CRANK SENSOR. THIS PROBLEM WAS OCCURRING AROUND FEBRUARY/MARCH OF 2007, WITH ONLY 60,121 MILEAGE WHEN THE FIRST ONE WAS REPLACED. THEN THIS PAST WEDNESDAY, 2/27/08, THE ENGINE STARTED TO MAKE A KNOCKING SOUND. WE THOUGHT MAYBE IT WAS DUE TO THE EXTREMELY COLD WEATHER WE WERE HAVING. IT DID NOT DUE IT AFTER THE CAR WAS HEATED UP. TOOK VEHICLE TO A DEALER AND THEY OFFERED TO REPLACE THE LOCKS BUT IT WOULD BE AT THE CONSUMER'S EXPENSE. CONSUMER DID REPLACE ONE OF THE DOOR LOCK MECHANISMS, THIS WAS ON THE DRIVER'S DOOR. NO PROBLEMS SINCE THE REPAIR OF THAT DOOR LOCK. NO EXPLANATION AS TO WHY THE DOOR LOCK HAS STOPPED OPERATING. CONSUMER HAS NOT CONTACTED CHRYSLER CORP ON THIS ISSUE AT THIS TIME. BOTH FRONT POWER WINDOWS HAVE STOPPED OPERATING AS WELL, THE POWER WILL RAISE WINDOW UP AND DOWN BUT THE WINDOW GLASS IS OFF TRACK. THIS CAUSING THE WINDING SOUND AND FAILURE TO LOCK OR UNLOCK THE DOORS. THE GEAR IS MADE OF SOME KIND OF SOFT PLASTIC MATERIAL FOR THIS TO HAPPEN. ABOUT THE REAR WINDOW, I CHECKED AND FOUND POWER GOING TO THE MOTORS. BUT WITH ONE OF THE WINDOW MOTORS I TAPPED IT AND GOT IT TO WORK FOR ACOUPLE OF DAYS. WITH MY EXPERINCE AS AN AUTO/TRUCK/BUS TECHNICIAN THE MOTORS ARE DEFECTED ALONG WITH THE DOOR ACTUATORS. I HOPE THESE ISSUES CAN GET RESOLVED, BECAUSE OVERALL MY VEHICLE IS GOOD AT 60,000 MILES.

ON SEPTEMBER 15, 2004 THE SAME DRIVERS SIDE SEAT RECLINER BOLT SHEARED IN HALF AND I LOST CONTROL OF THE CAR AND HAD AN ACCIDENT. I AM UNDER DOCTORS CARE FOR INJURIES SUSTAINED. THIS CAR HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP MORE THAN THE ROAD, AND NOW WE ARE TOLD THAT THE ENGINE IS BEYOND REPAIR, THAT WE WILL HAVE TO PURCHASE A NEW OR REBUILT ENGINE. CONSIDERING THAT I OWE $9000, TO SPEND $4000 TO REPAIR IS BEYOND MY MEANS. WE ORIGINALLY STARTED HAVING PROBLEMS IN 2002 WHEN THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WOULD COME ON, AND ACCORDING TO THE DODGE DEALER IN OUR AREA, THE CODE WAS FOR THE LEAK DETECTION SENSOR. THIS LIGHT WOULD COME ON AND STAY ON FOR A WHILE, AND WE WERE TOLD NOT TO WORRY UNTIL IT STARTED FLASHING. MYSTERIOUSLY, THE LIGHT WOULD THEN GO OFF. WE HAD SEVERAL OTHER REPAIRS AFTER THAT FOR THE SAME CODE AND SENSORS/MODULES REPLACED, THEN WE WOULD HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. WE WERE ULTIMATELY TOLD IT WAS A BROKEN WIRE UNDER THE SEAT?. EVENTUALLY, IN JUNE 2003, MY HUSBAND WAS DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD WHEN THE ENGINE JUST SEIZURE, ALMOST CAUSING A REAR-END COLLISION AND HIM SWERVING TO AVOID ONCOMING CARS AND ULTIMATELY ALMOST GOING IN THE DITCH IN FRONT OF A BUSY GAS STATION. THE CAR HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP SINCE, ENGINE SENT TO MACHINE SHOP, AND WE ARE TOLD IT CANNOT BE REPAIRED, AND IF THEY ATTEMPT TO, THEY CANNOT GUARANTEE FOR EVEN A DAY. THE VALVES ALL HAVE TO BE REPLACED, AND THERE ARE LARGE INDENTATIONS IN THE CYLINDER HEADS. EVERY TIME THAT SOMETHING WENT WRONG WITH THIS CAR, IT WOULD DIE IN THE MIDDLE OF TRAFFIC. TO DATE, I HAVE HAD 2 STEERING PUMP REPLACEMENTS, 1 RACK & PINION REPLACEMENT, A COMPLETE STEERING FLUID CHANGE WITH FLUID SUPPOSEDLY SPECIFIED BY DODGE, 1 APPOINTMENT THAT ENDED UP BEING A TEST DRIVE ONLY-WAS ADVISED TO TAKE CAR HOME PENDING RESPONSE FROM DODGE ON HOW TO PROCEED WITH REPAIRS..(WAS TOLD RESPONSE "DIDNT REALLY PERTAIN TO MY CAR.."), 1 VENT WIRE AND OIL SENDER UNIT REPLACED, AND IN AUGUST 02, I HAD A 1 MONTH AUTO CHECK UP. SINCE THEN I HAVE REPLACED MY INPUT/OUT TRANSMISSION SENSORS, AND HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT I MUST NOW REPLACE MY RACK AND PINION ASSEMBLY DUE TO STEERING PROBLEMS. I OWN AN AUTO REPAIR SHOP AND I HAVE SEEN THIS PROBLEM ON THESE VEHICLES MORE THAN ONCE AND CANNOT FIGURE OUT HOW DODGE IS GETTING AWAY WITH NOT RECALLING THESE VEHICLES FOR A FUEL LEAK ON THE PRESSURE LINE AT THE BACK OF THE ENGINE. IT HAS A STEEL LINE THAT COMES FROM THE TANK UP TO THE ENGINE AND THE LAST APPROX. 8 INCHES TURNS TO PLASTIC. THE PLASTIC PART CRACKS AFTER TIME AND IT SPRAYS FUEL ONTO THE EXHAUST SYSTEM WHICH SEEMS TO ME THAT SHOULD FALL UNDER A RECALL. AFTER DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 12 MILES TO WORK THE CAR WAS PULLED INTO A PARKING SPACE AND WHILE STRAIGHTENING THE WHEELS A LOUD POP WAS HEARD AND THE CAR HAD NO STEERING. THE INSPECTION REVEALED THAT (2) TWO 1/2 INCH THREADED BOLTS (THAT BOLT THE TIE RODS TO THE STEERING RACK HAD SHEARED OFF. ONE OF THE TIE ROD BUSHINGS WAS GONE AND THE AREA THE BUSHING WAS IN WAS EXTREMELY WORN, REQUIRING REPLACEMENT. THE RACK AND PINION WAS REPLACED ON THIS VEHICLE AT 20,000 MILES UNDER WARRANTY. THE CAR WAS REPAIRED BY REMOVING THE RACK, BACKING OUT THE OLD BOLT ENDS AND INSTALLING NEW BOLTS. THE ONE TIE ROD WAS REPLACED. I CONTACTED CHRYSLER CORPORATION CUSTOMER SERVICE AND THEY OFFERED NO HELP ON THE REPAIR. THE DISTRICT REP WAS ASK TO HELP AND HE DENIED ANY HELP. (HE DID NOT EVEN LOOK AT THE DAMAGE. I RECENTLY RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE FROM DAIMLERCHRYSLER FOR THE UPPER BALL JOINTS IN MY 2000 DODGE DURANGO. I CONTACTED THE COMPANY TO FIND OUT HOW TO HAVE MY CAR FIXED AS THERE IS NO DEALERSHIP WHERE I LIVE. I LET THEM KNOW I LIVED IN KETCHIKAN, ALASKA. THE WOMAN I SPOKE WITH TOLD ME TO CONTACT THE JUNEAU DEALERSHIP AS IT WAS THE CLOSEST TO ME. I CONTACTED THE JUNEAU DEALERSHIP WHO TOLD ME THAT HE COULD SEND ME THE PARTS FROM JUNEAU AND I COULD HAVE THE LABOR DONE IN KETCHIKAN, SENDING HIM THE BILL FOR THE LABOR, WHICH I WOULD BE REIMBURSED FOR AN ALLOTTED AMOUNT OF MONEY. I AGREED, BUT HE NEEDED TO FIND OUT IF HE COULD SEND ME BOTH BALL JOINTS, AS I HAD ONE BALL JOINT REPLACED IN AUGUST OF 2004, WITHOUT BEING REIMBURSED BY DAIMLERCHRYSLER. TODAY, AUGUST 1, 2005, THE GENTLEMAN FROM THE JUNEAU DEALERSHIP CALLED TO TELL ME THAT I SHOULD HAVE BOTH BALL JOINTS REPLACED, BUT THAT HE COULD NO LONGER SEND ME THE PARTS BECAUSE DAIMLERCHRYSLER HAD CONTACTED HIM AND NOW PROHIBITED HIM FROM DOING RECALLS IN THIS FASHION AS IT WAS DEEMED FRAUDULENT. I DIRECTLY CONTACTED DAIMLERCHRYSLER AND SPOKE WITH THE SUPERVISOR "KATHERINE" WHO STATED THAT I HAD TO TAKE MY CAR TO SEATTLE OR JUNEAU TO A DEALERSHIP FOR THE RECALL OR THEY WOULD NOT PAY TO FIX IT. I TOLD HER I LIVED ON AN ISLAND AND COULD NOT AFFORD TO PAY THE FERRY FEE TO DO THAT OR GO WITHOUT ANY TRANSPORTATION FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME. SHE SAID THEY COULD NOT COMPENSATE ME FOR TRANSPORTATION AS IT WAS NOT PART OF THE RECALL AND THAT THEY WERE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR MY LIVING ON AN ISLAND, BUT THAT I HAD TO HAVE THE RECALL DONE BECAUSE IT WAS A SAFETY ISSUE. SINCE I BOUGHT THIS CAR ON OCTOBER OF 1999, I HAVE TAKEN IT TO THE DEALER 31 TIMES TO FIX THINGS. I HAVE BEEN WITHOUT A CAR 100 DAYS. I HAVE PAID OUT OF POCKET $3,137.64. I AM NOW ON AN EXTENDED WARRANTY. I STILL OWE $8,000.00 ON MY CAR. IT HAS 60,000 MILES. I HAVE MAINTAINED IT EVERY 3,000 MILES AS SUGGESTED IN THE OWNERS MANUAL. I ONLY USE 97 OCTANE GAS. I AM A VERY CAUTIOUS DRIVER. I TAKE CARE OF THE CAR BUT THE CAR HAS LEFT ME STRANDED IN THE MIDDLE OF HIGHWAYS PUTTING MY LIFE AND THE LIVES OF MY PASSENGERS IN DANGER. I NEVER KNOW WHEN THE CAR IS GOING TO BREAK DOWN AGAIN AND WHERE SO I AM ALWAYS UNDER TERRIBLE STRESS. I PRAY AS I DRIVE THAT I MAKE IT TO MY DESTINATION. THIS CAR HAS BEEN A LEMON SINCE I BOUGHT IT. THE BIGGEST PROBLEM IS THE ENGINE BLOWING. MY BROTHER IN LAW WAS DRIVING AND I WAS THE PASSENGER ON SOUTH DIXIE HIGHWAY (US1) IN SOUTH MIAMI WHEN WE WERE AT A RED LIGHT AND THEN STARTED TO GO WHEN THE LIGHT TURNED GREEN AND WITHOUT ANY WARNING LIGHTS, NOISES, OR ANYTHING THE CAR STOPPED RUNNING. IT DIED IN THE MIDDLE LANE. WE HAD TO PUSH IT TO THE SIDE. IT WAS RUSH HOUR AND THIS HIGHWAY IS FILLED WITH VERY AGGRESSIVE DRIVERS. THEY WERE ALL CURSING, BEEPING, SIGNALING, AND DRIVING SO CLOSE TO US AS TO ALMOST TOUCH US. I WAS PETRIFIED. I THOUGHT A CAR WAS GOING TO HIT US. I PAID FOR THE ENGINE REPAIR OUT OF MY POCKET, BECAUSE THE EXTENDED WARRANTY COMPANY TOLD THE DEALER THEY COULD NOT COVER IT BECAUSE THERE WAS SLUDGE BUILD UP. THEY SEND AN ADJUSTOR WHO REPORTED IT TO THEM. THE DEALER TOLD US TO FIGHT IT BECAUSE THE SLUDGE WAS NORMAL FOR THAT TYPE OF ENGINE. WE PROVIDED THE EXTENDED WARRANTY ALL THE RECEIPTS FOR THE MAINTENANCE THAT WE RELIGIOUSLY DID ABOUT EVERY 3000 MILES. WE ALSO HAD ANOTHER MECHANIC GO IN AND LOOK AT THE CAR. THE OTHER MECHANIC SAID THAT THESE TYPES OF ENGINES ALWAYS HAD THE PROBLEM OF SLUDGE BUILD UP AND THAT IT WAS NORMAL FOR THE ENGINE AND THAT THE EXTENDED WARRANTY SHOULD COVER IT.

ENGINE IN 2000 CHRYSLER INTREPID STARTED TAPPING NOISE AT 58017KM BROUGHT TO DEALER WITH COMPLAINT, TOLD THEY WOULD NOT TAKE ENGINE APART TO CHECK NOISE. I TOLD THEM I HAD BEEN TOLD THAT THE 2.7 ENGINE HAD PROBLEMS WITH SLUDGE THAT PREVENTED THE OIL FROM CIRCULATING PROPERLY. THEY STILL REFUSED TO CHECK ENGINE. AT JUST OVER 62000 KM ENGINE BECAME NOISY. BROUGHT IT BACK TO DEALER WHO KEPT THE CAR FOR TWO WEEKS, THEN TOLD ME ENGINE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AT A COST OF $6500.00 AND THERE WOULD BE NO WARRANTY COVERAGE OR GOODWILL. I GAVE THEM A COMPLETE HISTORY OF MAINTENANCE RECORDS SHOWING THAT PROPER MAINTENANCE WAS DONE WITH IN THE REQUIRED MILEAGE AND TIME. THEY HAVE TOLD ME THAT THE INVOICES DO NOT CLEARLY IDENTIFY MY 2000 BLACK INTREPID AND THAT IT COULD OF BEEN ANOTHER CAR. I ONLY OWN ONE 2000 INTREPID. THE INVOICE SHOWS THE WORK THE MILEAGE AND MY NAME AND DATE. NEXT ME THEY TOLD ME THE INVOICE NUMBERS WERE TOO CLOSE TOGETHER. THE WORK WAS DONE AT FOUR DIFFERENT GARAGES. THEN THEY TOLD ME THERE WAS SLUDGE THAT SHOWED THE VEHICLE WAS NOT PROPERLY MAINTAINED. THEN THEY ASKED ME THE BRAND OF OIL THE GARAGES USED AS IT MAY HAVE BEEN FAULTY. END RESULT IS THAT THEY REFUSE TO CHANGE THEIR POSITION IN REGARDS TO WARRANTY COVERAGE OR GOODWILL REPAIRS AND I WILL HAVE TO REPLACE AN ENGINE THAT WAS BOUGHT BRAND NEW IN MAY 2001.
