THE CONSUMER TOOK THE VEHICLE INTO THE MECHANIC AND WAS TOLD THAT THE HAD GONE BAD. WATER SEEPED INTO THE TANK</A>. WHILE DRIVING CONSUMER HEARD A CLANKING NOISE THAT CAME FROM THE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE OVER HEATED. PLEASE PROVIDE ANY FURTHER INFORMATION. *JB *TC

I OWN A 1995 DODGE NEON AND IT HAS A MAJOR HEADGASKET OIL LEAK THAT A MECHANIC DIAGNOSED. THE HEADGASKET LEAK HAS BEEN GETTING WORSE AND THIS IS A MAJOR PROBLEM BECAUSE I AM ADDING A QUART OF OIL EVERY THREE DAYS. THE ENTIRE BOTTOM OF THE ENGINE IS COVERED IN OIL. I CHECKED THE NHTSA DEFECT INVESTIGATION REPORTS AND MANY CONSUMERS HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT THIS SERIOUS PROBLEM. EVERY TIME I DRIVE THERE IS A STRONG SMELL OF BURNED OIL. ON 12-15-2003 SMOKE STARTED TO COME FROM THE ENGINE. I AM VERY WORRIED THAT THIS MIGHT START AN ENGINE FIRE IF THE CAR GETS VERY HOT. I HAVE CHECKED VARIOUS AUTOMOTIVE WEBSITES AND IN ONE SITE A DODGE OWNER MENTIONS THAT HIS MECHANIC TOLD HIM THAT A CUSTOMERS DODGE NEON HAD AN ENGINE FIRE. I CONTACTED A LOCAL DODGE DEALER AND THEY SAID THAT THEY COULD DO NOTHING ABOUT IT. THIS IS AN OBVIOUS DESIGN DEFECT THAT IS ALSO A SAFETY RISK NOT ONLY OF ENGINE FIRES BUT ALSO ENGINE STALLS DUE TO LOW OIL LEVELS. THERE IS ALSO A PROBLEM WITH THE BRAKES MAKING STRANGE SOUNDS. *LA

DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED IN A SCHOOL ZONE WHEN THE CONTACT WAS ASKED TO MOVE THE VEHICLE OFF SCHOOL PROPERTY DUE TO EXCESSIVE GAS LEAKING AND THE POTENTIAL FOR STARTING A FIRE ON SCHOOL PROPERTY. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, WHO DETERMINED THE VEHICLE WAS LEAKING GAS AND BRAKE FLUID AND THAT THE REPAIRS SHOULD BE COVERED UNDER NHTSA RECALL#96V228000, REGARDING SERVICE BRAKES,HYDRAULIC:FOUNDATION COMPONENTS:HOSES,LINES/PIPING, AND FITTINGS. THE VEHICLE WAS THAN TOWED TO THE LOCAL DEALER WHO DETERMINED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL DUE TO THE VIN. THE VEHICLE WAS CURRENTLY AT THE DEALER WAITING FURTHER EXAMINATION AND REPAIRS.

THE REAR BRAKE LINE ON THE VEHICLE WAS SO RUSTED THAT WHEN I APPLIED THE BRAKES TO MAKE A LEFT TURN, THE LINE BROKE AND THE BRAKES FAILED. LUCKILY I WAS NOT STOPPING FOR A CHILD, STOP LIGHT, OR OBSTRUCTION AND DID NOT EXPERIENCE A CRASH. MY CAR HAS BEEN STALLING ON ME AND SHUTTING DOWN OFF AND ON FOR THE PAST 5 YEARS. I SPENT OVER $4000 TO HAVE PARTS REPLACED AND THE CAR STILL HAS THE PROBLEM. I WANT MY CAR CHECKED COMPLETELY FREE OF CHARGE. IT HAS ONLY 110K AND IT HAS BEEN CARED FOR SINCE DAY ONE. MY BROTHER IS A MECHANIC IN OCEANSIDE, NY AND HAS BEEN MY MECHANIC SINCE I BOUGHT IT NEW UP UNTIL I MOVED TO PHOENIX, AZ AND ALL THE MECHANICS I'VE USED HERE CAN'T FIX MY CAR. I DISCOVERED THAT THE FUEL TANK FILLER PIPE HAD CORRODED AND SEPARATED FROM THE FUEL FILLER DOOR ASSEMBLY (PIPE FROM FUEL FILLER DOOR TO FUEL TANK). FUEL TANK FILLER PIPE WAS FOUND LOOSE AND DANGLING WITHIN THE RIGHT REAR FENDER BEHIND THE RIGHT REAR WHEEL. FORTUNATELY, NO APPARENT LOSS OF GASOLINE WAS DETECTED AT THE POINT OF DISCOVERY. CONTACT THE LOCAL CHRYSLER/DODGE SERVICE REP INDICATED THAT THEY HAD NO KNOWLEDGE OF THIS TYPE OF SAFETY DEFECT AND NO RECALL ON RECORD. THE PLASTIC LENSES ON MY 1995 DODGE NEON'S HEADLIGHTS, TURN INDICATORS, AND FOG LIGHTS HAVE SIGNIFICANTLY DETERIORATED OVER TIME. THE LENSES HAVE YELLOWED AND ARE PITTED CAUSING A SIGNIFICANT LOSS OF LIGHT OUTPUT. IT IS LESS SAFE TO DRIVE THIS CAR AT NIGHT. I WROTE TO DAIMLER CHRYSLER AND THEY DENIED MY CLAIM. THEY ACKNOWLEDGED THAT THE REPAIR IS EXPENSIVE BUT STATED THAT THE WARRANTY HAD EXPIRED. I DO NOT BELIEVE THIS IS A WARRANTY ISSUE - I BELIEVE IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE.

2 WEEKS PRIOR TO REPORTED INCIDENT VEHICLE HAD A COOLANT LEAK. GARAGE FOUND THAT THE COOLANT RESEVOIR HAD SPLIT AND REPLACED IT. ON THE 9TH MARCH MY WIFE DROVE THE CAR AND DROPPED A COLLEGE OF TO PICK UP HIS CAR AT A GARAGE. WHEN SHE RESTARTED THE VEHICLE AND PROCEEDED TO DRIVE IT SHE NOTICED THAT THE ENGINE DID NOT SOUND RIGHT. SHORTLY AFTER THE CAR STARTED TO WOBBLE, THE ENGINE CHECK LIGHT CAME ON AND THE TEMPERTURE GAUGE STARTED TO CLIMB HIGHER. SHE ARRIVED HOME, I RANG THE GARAGE, TOLD THEM OF THE SYMPTOMS AND WAS TOLD TO BRING THE CAR IN. ON STARTING IT UP I NOTICED A LOT OF BLUE GREY SMOKE COME OUT OF THE EXHAUST. THE VEHICLE DROVE WITH NO PROBLEMS TO THE GARAGE. SUBSEQUENT INSPECTION OF THE ENGINE SHOWED A COOLANT LEAK, WHEN THE HEAD GASKET WAS TAKEN OFF THERE WERE 2 CRACKS ON THE ENGINE BLOCK. THE ESTIMATED COST OF A TEMPORARY REPAIR IS $1000, BUT THERE IS NO GUARANTEE HOW LONG THE REPAIR WOULD LAST. THE ONLY OTHER OPTION WAS A NEW ENGINE WHICH IS OUT OF THE QUESTION. I CANNOT UNDERSTAND HOW THIS PROBLEM COULD OCCUR WITH ONLY 76K ON THE CLOCK. THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED USED WITH 45K ON THE CLOCK IN SEPTEMBER 1997. SINCE THEN IT HAS BEEN SERVICED ACCORDING TO THE MANUFACTURERS INSTRUCTION, WITH AN OIL AND FILTER CHANGE EVERY 3 MONTHS.*AK

AS I WAS DRIVING MY 1995 NEON HOME FROM WORK, I NOTICED THAT THE OIL LIGHT CAME ON. I BECAME CONCERNED AND PULLED INTO THE NEAREST SERVICE STATION WHICH WAS LESS THAT 1/2 MILE AWAY. I ASKED THE SERVICE TECH TO LOOK AT THE CAR AND HE SAID THAT THERE WAS AN OIL LEAK. HE SUGGESTED THAT I HAVE THE OIL CHANGED AND SEE IF THERE WERE ANY LOOSE FITTINGS FROM MY PREVIOUS OIL CHANGE A FEW WEEKS EARLIER. THE OIL WAS CHANGED AND THE CAR STARTED ONLY TO CONTINUE TO LEAK OIL AGAIN. I WAS TOLD NOT TO DRIVE IT AND HAD IT TOWED TO MY DEALERSHIP THE FOLLOWING DAY. THE DEALERSHIP DIAGNOSED THAT THE CAM SEAL/PLUG HAD CRACKED OFF AND CAUSED DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE. AS A RESULT, I WOULD NEED A NEW SHORT BLOCK INSTALLED IN MY 5YR OLD CAR AT A PRICE OF $3500.00. I FEEL THAT THE CAM SEAL/PLUG IS DEFECTIVE AND THAT IS WHY IT CRACKED OFF. I HAVE SPOKEN TO OTHER PEOPLE IN THE AUTO INDUSTRY/REPAIR INDUSTRY AND IT IS A KNOWN PROBLEM WITH THE NEON CAR. I CANNOT IMAGINE THAT I SHOULD BE HELD TO PAY FOR THE REPLACEMENT OF THE ENGINE WHEN I DID EVERYTHING I WAS SUPPOSED TO DO BY STOPPING THE CAR IMMEDIATELY. I SPOKE TO CHRYSLER DIRECTLY AND WITHIN MINUTES OF CONTACTING THE DEALER, THEY (CHRYSLER) AGREED TO PAY HALF OF THE REPAIR ONLY IF I HAD THE SERVICE DONE AT A DODGE DEALERSHIP. I APPRECIATED THIS GESTURE BUT I AM STILL LOOKING AT PAYING $1700.00 OUT OF POCKET FOR THE DAMAGE. I FEEL THAT CHRYSLER IS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM WITH THIS DEFECTIVE PART. I HAVE READ COMPLAINTS ON YOUR WEBSITE AND WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE A PHONE CALL TO SEE IF I CAN GET ANY HELP IN RESOLVING THIS ISSUE. AS YOU CAN IMAGINE, I AM EXTREMELY UPSET AT THIS POINT. I HAVE CONTACTED MY DEALER AND WROTE A LETTER TO THE GENERAL MANAGER. I DID RECEIVE A CALL FROM THE SVC MGR, WHO WILL ADMIT NO FAULT. THE MONTH I BOUGHT THE CAR I HAD TO GET THE MOTOR MOUNTS REPLACED AND THE TRANSMISION. THE MOTOR MOUNTS WERE BUSTED AND I SHOULDN'T HAVE BEEN DRIVING THE CAR ON THE TRANSMISSION. SINCE I BOUGHT THE CAR THE PAINT JOB HAS BEEN PEELING. I HAVE NO PAINT ON THE ROOF. I HAD TO SAND DOWN WHAT WAS LEFT AND PRIMER IT. THE REST OF THE PAINT ON THE CAR IS PEELING EVERYWHERE. RECENTLY THE GAUGE CLUSTER WENT OUT. WHEN I WOULD TURN ON THE CAR THE GAUGES WOULDN'T DO ANYTHING. THEN IT STOPPED, NOW THE SPEEDOMETER WON'T MOVE ALONG WITH THE ODOMETER. SO I HAVE NO IDEA HOW FAST I AM GOING. LAST, WHENEVER I GET OUT OF MY CAR FROM DRIVING IT SMELLS LIKE SOMEONE FARTED, I HAVE A CONSTANT CHECK ENGINE LIGHT THAT TELLS ME ITS THE O2 SENSER BUT IT'S NOT WE TESTED THOSE. THE CATALITIC CONVERT IS BAD ON THE CAR AND I HAVE TO REPLACE IT.

MY DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING MY 1995 DODGE NEON WHEN THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED AND CAUSED HER TO HAVE AN ACCIDENT. SHE WAS TRAVELING AT APPROX 35 - 40 MPH .THERE WERE NO ABNORMAL WEATHER OR ROAD CONDITIONS. SUDDENLY THE STEERING WHEEL JERKED THE CAR OFF THE ROAD TOWARDS THE RIGHT, AT THAT POINT SHE HAD A LOSS OF STEERING AND NO CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. SHE WAS NOT APPLYING THE BRAKES OR MAKING A TURN, JUST DRIVING ALONG AS SHE NORMALLY WOULD. PREVIOSLY WE HAVE HAD PROBLEMS, SERIOUS PROBLEMS WITH THE ANTILOCK BRAKE SYSTEM FAILING. WHEN APPLYING THE BRAKES ON TWO SEPARATE OCCASIONS THE FRONT WHEELS LOCKED UP ONCE CAUSING A MINOR ACCIDENT , THE OTHER JUST CAUSED DAMAGE TO THE TIRES. THE ACCIDENT WHEN THE STEERING FAILED WAS FORTUNATELY A MINOR ONE . BUT COULD JUST AS EASILY BEEN A VERY SERIOS POSSIBLY FATAL. SINCE AT THE TIME OF THE STEERING LOSS, THERE WAS NO WAY TO CONTROL THE DIRECTION OF THE VEHICLE, WHICH RESULTED IN DAMAGE TO A RESIDENTIAL HOMEOWNERS YARD AND PERSONAL PROPERTY THAT WAS LOCATED IN THE YARD. THE VEHICLE CAME TO REST BETWEEN TWO TREES BECAUSE IT WAS STOPPED BY A TENSION WIRE ATTACHED TO A TELEPHONE POLE WHICH WAS STRUCK AND BECAME WRAPPED AROUND THE FRONT LEFT TIRE. IF NOT FOR THAT SHE WOULD HAVE STRUCK A CONCRETE CULVERT ONLY A FEW FEET AWAY.. WE ARE PRESENTLY INVOLVED IN PROCEEDINGS TO HAVE THE CITATION SHE RECEIVED DISMISSED DUE TO FAULTY EQUIPMENT. ALSO I DID INQUIRE WITH DODGE MOTOR CORP RE SAFETY RECALL INFO...WHICH I WAS INFORMED THAT MY VEHICLE HAS NO INCOMPLETE RECALL WORK , BUT I ALSO RECEIVED A CAR FACTS REPORT FROM CONSUMER GUIDE STATING THAT THERE WAS A RECALL AND THERE IS NO INFORMATION STATING THE WORK HAD BEEN COMPLETED BY DODGE TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. WHICH IF IT HAD BEEN CORRECTED THE INFO WOULD HAVE BEEN UPDATED TO SHOW THAT. IF YOU COULD PLEASE HELP ME WITH THIS MATTER, AND POSSIBLY SAVE SOMEONE FROM THIS MESS. I HAVE HAD THIS CAR SINCE 1995. I DO NOT USE THE CAR OTHER THAN FOR VERY LIMITED DRIVING AS SEEN IN MY LOW MILEAGE. IT IS MARCH 23 OF 2000, MY CAR HAS APPROX 29,000 MILES, VERY LOW AND ALL THESE PROBLEMS. THE CAR IS CURRENTLY IN THE SHOP BEING TOLD THAT THE HEAD GASKET THAT THEY REPLACED IN 1/99 DID NOT HOLD, WHICH IN 99, THEY THOUGHT WAS ODD THAT IT WENT SO SOON. I AM ALSO HAVING THE CAR FIXED BECAUSE THE POWER STEERING SWITCH SENSOR HAS FAILED. I BELIEVE THAT ON A CAR WITH LITTLE MILEAGE THAT I SHOULD BE INCURRING THIS MUCH PROBLEMS. AFTER RESEARCHING THE RECALL LIST I FOUND RECALL INFORMATION # 94V033000 THAT IDENTIFIES POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE PROBLEMS THAT SHOULD BE REPLACED. THIS WAS OBVIOUSLY NEVER COMPLETED ON THIS VEHICLE. I AM SCARED TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE. THE PEYTON WELL SERVICE ADVISOR BEN WOODFILL STATED IF ANYTHING LIKE THIS HAPPENED AGAIN THEY WOULD FIX IT FOR FREE BUT THIS WAS AFTER TELLING ME THAT THE MAIN HARNESS TO THE MOTOR NEEDED REPLACING AND THAT THEY HAD FOUND SOME CORROSION ON ANOTHER ELECTICAL PART AND CLEANED IT UP ON AUGUST 12TH. MY FIANCE SPOKE WITH THE SERVICE ADVISOR AND STATED THAT WE WERE UNDER THE IMPRESSION THE PROBLEM WAS FIXED THE FIRST TIME WHEN WE HAD IT TOWED IN BUT NOW THEY WERE TELLING US THAT IT WOULD COST AND ADDITIONAL 700.00 TO GET THIS SO CALLED MAIN HARNESS REPLACED. SINCE THE PURCHASE OF MY NEON IN MAY '95, I HAVE HAD NOTHING BUT COSTLY PROBLEMS. THIS PAST YEAR, ALONE, THE REPAIR, TOWING, AND CAR RENTAL EXPENSES HAVE EXCEEDED $5000.00. THIS CAR IS COSTING ME A FORTUNE TO MAINTAIN, AS THESE ARE MAJOR COMPONENTS THAT ARE MALFUNCTIONING. THE ITEMS I HAVE REGISTERED COMPLAINTS ON ARE JUST A FEW OF THE ITEMS I AM HAVING PROBLEMS WITH. IN JUST OVER A YEAR, I HAVE HAD TO HAVE A HEAD GASKET REPLACED, MY AIR COMPRESSOR SEIZED, ALMOST RESULTING IN A FIRE, MY THROTTLE BODY HAD TO BE REPLACED, THEY STILL CAN'T DETERMINE WHY MY BRAKES SQUEAL CONSTANTLY. FUEL PUMP - HAS EXTRA PORT THAT IS CAPPED WITH A NON-REENFORCED RUBBER CAP. THE RUBBER CAP APPEARS TO HAVE EXPLODED ON THE END OF THE CAP WHILE THE CAR WAS SITTING IN A PARKING LOT. THE RUPTURE OF THE CAP ALLOWED GASOLINE TO DRIP ABOUT 1 DROP PER SECOND. ON THIS CAR THE EXHAUST PIPES ARE CLOSE TO THE FUEL TANK. GAS FUMES WERE HIGHLY NOTICEABLE IN THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT. THANK GOODNESS FOR NONSMOKER, NO SPARKS, AND A GUARDIAN ANGEL...MY DAUGTHER DROVE THE CAR 7 MILES HOME. THIS REMINDS ME OF THE FORD PINTO FIRE POSSIBILITIES. MOPAR PARTS DOES NOT STOCK THE RUBBER CAP (MAYBE $1) BUT WILL SELL THE ENTIRE FUEL PUMP FOR JUST UNDER $300 PLUS INSTALLATION. 2) ENGINE - ENGINE FAILED ON CYLINDER 4 WITH LOST POWER, ETC. INSTRUMENT CLUSTER LOSES POWER UNEXPLICABLY DURING NORMAL CAR USAGE. POWER IS IMMEDIATLY RESTORED AFTER THE LOSS, HOWEVER IT MAKES VEHICLE DIFFICULT TO DRIVE AT TIMES WHEN ODEMTER IS BEING RESET. EXCESSIVE LEAKAGE IN VEHICLE'S TRUNK AND DRIVER'S SIDE BACK SEAT HAS OCCURED. BOSAK TO FIX AFTER CAR WAS RECENTLY BOUGHT, HOWEVER, LEAK NOT COMPLETELY FIXED AND RE-DISCOVERED 1 YEAR LATER. A HOLE WAS DISCOVERED IN THE DRIVERE'S SIDE REAR WHEEL WELL AS A RESULT OF UNEXPLICABLE EXCESSIVE CORROSION. IT WAS ALSO DISCOVERED THAT SEALS WERE BROKED ON DRIVERE'S SIDE DOOR AND WINDOW TRACK WAS GLUED IMPROPERLY CAUSING THE WINDOW AND TRACK TO COME LOOSE. WITHIN THE LAST 8 MONTHS A/C COMPRESSOR WENT OUT; THE SPEED CONTROL SURGED, WORKED INTERMITTENTLY THEN STOPPED FUNCTIONING; THE LEFT REAR ABS WHEEL SPEED SENSOR FAILED CAUSING THE SYSTEM TO WORK INTERMITTENTLY; THE ENGINE HEAD GASKET BLEW AND MY REAR WINDOW BLEW OUT AND SHATTERED WHEN I CLOSED THE DOOR DURING 00F WEATHER. PRESENTLY I HAVE HAD NO RESPONSE FROM THE MANUFACTURER STATING THE TECHNICALITY OF "OUT OF WARRANTY" "NOTHING WE CAN DO" DEAF EARS. I WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE ANY ASSISTANCE OR SUGGESTIONS ON HOW I CAN PROCEED TO RECOVER SOME OF MY COSTS FOR REPAIRING SO MANY ITEMS THAT HAVE FAILED WITHIN A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME.

GLUE MELTED FROM AROUND FRONT AND REAR WINDOWS, AFRAID THAT WINDSHIELD OR REAR GLASS MAY "POP" OUT, 4. CAR PULLS TO THE LEFT, AND EVEN THOUGH NUMEROUS ATTEMPTS HAVE BEEN MADE TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. WHEN THE TRANSMISSION FAILED THE DEALER TOLD ME I RAN IT OUT OF FLUID/ I WAS 2 MO. / 2000 MILES FROM FACTORY WARRANTY AND THEY WOULD NOT HELP PAY FOR ANY OF THE $1350 THEY WANTED ME TO PAY/ HAD IT TOWED TO AN INDEPENDANT MECHANICH WHICH TOLD ME THAT THE BACK OF THE TRANSMISSION HAD A LARGE HOLE BLOWN OUT OF THE BACK OF IT, COULDNT KEEP TRANSMISSION FLUID IN IT THAT WAY. FOUND A USED ONE WITH 2,000 MI. CHARGED $800. THIS CAR HAS BEEN NOTHING BUT TROUBLE SINCE DAY ONE. I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER DODGE, EVER!! THE DEALERS TRY TO ROB YOU BLIND AND THE CO. DOESN'T KNOW YOU ONCE THEY HAVE GOTTEN THEIR MONEY. PAID 10,500 FOR THIS CAR 2 YEARS AGO AND HAVE BEEN PAYING EVER SINCE.
