CARS DASHBOARD GOT SO HOT THAT IT CURLED UP CAUSING THE FRONT DEFROSTERS NOT TO WORK AND ALSO PARTIALLY OBSTRUCTING MY VISION WHILE DRIVING THAT CAR. *TR

2000 FORD CONTOUR SVT, 71K MILES THE DASHBOARD HAS BEEN CURLING, FROM WHERE THE WINDSHIELD MEETS THE DASHBOARD, FOR SEVERAL YEARS NOW. THE PROCESS HAS BEEN VERY SLOW, BUT HAS GOTTEN TO THE POINT WHERE IT NOW SEVERELY INTERFERES WITH DEFROST VENT FLOW AND VISION. THE DEFROST VENT POPPED OUT A YEAR AGO AND NOW DOES NOT FIT. THE CURLING OF THE DASHBOARD DOES NOT PROVIDE FOR DECENT DEFROST AND VENTING, WHICH IN ADDITION TO THE 6 INCHES OF DASHBOARD THAT HAS CURLED UP, INTERFERES WITH ADEQUATE SIGHT, ESPECIALLY FOR SHORTER DRIVERS. I'VE HAD SEVERAL OTHERS (STRANGERS) STOP ME OUT-OF-THE-BLUE AND INQUIRE ABOUT MY PROBLEM THAT THEY ALSO HAVE. THE DASH BOARD IS CURLED UP. THE PROBLEM STARTED IN 2002 AND HAS SLOWLY CONTINUED TO GET WORSE. WE CONTACTED FORD AND THEY SAID THAT THERE WAS A RECALL BUT THAT THE TIME FRAME FOR MAKING A CLAIM HAD EXPIRED. WE DIDN'T PROCEED FURTHER BECAUSE THEY TOLD US IT WOULD COST US $1000 TO FIX. OUR WARRANTY SAID THEY WOULDN'T COVER IT BECAUSE THEY CONSIDERED IT "UPHOLSTERY." WE HAVE JUST LEFT IT. IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE IT MAKES IT VERY DIFFICULT TO SEE OVER THE CURLED DASH BOARD. TL*- THE CONTACT STATED IN AN ATTEMPTTO DRIVE THE 2000 FORD CONTOUR SHE GOT IN AND SAW THAT THE DASHBOARD WAS PEELING. THE CONTACT STATED THAT ALL TYPES OF WEATHER MADE IT PEEL MORE AND MORE. HER VEHICLE COULD NOT PASS INSPECTION. *AK

THE DASHBOARD IS WARPED AND IS PEELING AWAY FROM THE BASE CAUSING LIMITED VISIBILITY OUT OF THE FRONT WINDOW AS WELL AS LIMITING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE FRONT WINDOW DEFROSTER. HAVE NOT CONTACTED A LOCAL FORD DEALER AS OF YET AND I AM RELUCTANT TO GIVEN THE GROWING NUMBER OF DISSATISFIED CONSUMERS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. ANY ASSISTANCE WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 FORD CONTOUR. THE CONTACT STATED THAT AFTER REFUELING, A STRONG ODOR OF FUEL WAS EMITTED FROM THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT EXAMINED THE VEHICLE AND NOTICED THAT THE FUEL TANK WAS LEAKING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC AND THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE FILLER PIPE GROMMET WAS LEAKING. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL ASSOCIATED WITH NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 00V350000 (FUEL SYSTEM, OTHER:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY). THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 173,000.

DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE'S GAS TANK STRAP DETACHED ON 07/01/06. A STRAP WAS OBSERVED HANGING FROM UNDER THE VEHICLE WHILE PARKED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP WHO DETERMINED THAT THE RIGHT HAND FUEL TANK ASSEMBLY STRAP HAD BECOME DETACHED. THE INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP CONTACTED THE DEALER WHO CONTACTED THE MANUFACTURER TO ORDER FUEL TANK ASSEMBLY STRAP. THE MANUFACTURER DETERMINED THAT THE FUEL TANK ASSEMBLY STRAP WAS ON BACK ORDER AND THAT THERE WAS NOT A SPECIFIC DATE WHEN THE PART WOULD ARRIVE.

VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO DEALER IN 2002 IN RESPONSE TO FORD CUSTOMER SATISFACTION PROGRAM 01B78 TO ADDRESS POTENTIAL INSTRUMENT PANEL WARPING. THERE WAS NO VISIBLE WARPING AT THE TIME. THE DEALER ADVISED THERE WAS NO ISSUE AND NO SERVICE WAS REQUIRED. THROUGHOUT THE LAST YEAR, THE WARPING STARTED TO BECOME VISIBLE. EARLIER IN THE MONTH, THE WARPING APPLIED SO MUCH STRESS ON THE VENT COVER THAT THE COVER SNAPPED OUT AND LANDED IN THE FRONT SEATS. I WENT TO START MY CAR ONE NIGHT AND THE KEY WOULD NOT FIT IN THE IGNITION. MY COUSIN HAS TRIED WORKING ON IT AND HE CAN'T EVEN GET THE OLD IGNITION SWITCH OUT OF THE CAR TO REPLACE IT WITH A NEW ONE. THE VENT BRACKET ON THE DASH BECAME LOOSE AND WAS ABOUT TO FALL OFF WHEN I REMOVED IT FROM THE CAR. THE DASH PAD BEGAN TO SHRINK AND PULL AWAY FROM THE INSTRUMENT PANEL AND DASH IMMEDIATELY AFTER WE GOT THE CAR. THE MANUFACTURER DISCONTINUED TO PROVIDE A REPLACEMENT IN 2004. THERE WAS A REPAIR CAMPAIGN FOR A 6 MONTH PERIOD--BEFORE I OWNED THE CAR. I WOULD LIKE FORD TO PROVIDE A REPLACEMENT PART TO ME AT NO COST. I WILL INSTALL IT. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE THE DEFROSTER IS BLOCKED BY THE LEADING EDGE OF THE SHRINKING DASH PAD; PART OF THE DRIVER'S VISION IS BLOCKED; THE GRILLE IS DANGEROUS IF IT BECOMES LOOSE IN THE CAR; THE AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT WILL BE INTERFERED WITH UNLESS THERE IS A REMEDY. *JB

DASH WARPED ON 2000 FORD CONTOUR. I BOUGHT THE CAR NEW IN FEB. OF 2001 AND HAD THE DASH REPLACED ONCE ALREADY WHEN IT WAS COVERED UNDER FORD'S WARRANTY. THE 2ND TIME IT HAPPENED FORD REFUSED TO HELP AS MY WARRANTY HAD EXPIRED. THE DASH IS SEVERELY WARPED TO THE POINT WHERE IT'S HITTING THE WINDSHIELD. CONSIDERING MY HEIGHT, IT HAS CERTAINLY HAD AN EFFECT ON MY VISION OF THE ROAD. IT ALSO HAS AN ADVERSE IMPACT ON THE DEFROSTER FUNCTION. THE LEADING EDGE OF THE DASHBOARD (PORTION NEAREST THE WINDSHIELD) HAS "WARPED" UPWARD SEVERELY (6+ INCHES!). IT NOW PRESSES AGAINST THE WINDSHIELD, PREVENTING THE DEFROSTER FROM FUNCTIONING PROPERLY AT ALL. THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD ESPECIALLY DURING WINTER MONTHS. IT IS UNKNOWN IF THIS DASHBOARD WARPAGE WOULD INTERFERE WITH AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT. (2) THE FAILURE WAS THE #3 SPARK PLUG BLOWING OUT OF THE HEAD WHICH ALSO DAMAGED THE COIL IN MY 2000 FORD EXPEDITION 5.4L ENGINE, WHICH HAD 82000 MILES. THIS IS A 2000 FORD EXPEDITION. LAST YEAR THERE WAS A FIRE STRARTED BY A RELAY FAILURE IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. THIS REPAIR WAS $2300.00, $435.00 WAS NOT COVERED BY THE EXTENDED WARRANTY WE PURCHASED. IN THE PAST MONTH I HAVE NOTICED PAINT FAILURE LEADING TO RUST ON THE ROOF, AND LAST FRIDAY THE ENGINE FAILED WHILE MY WIFE WAS DRIVING. CATASTROPHIC FAILURE. FORD SAYS WE NEED A NEW ENGINE WHICH WILL COST $5,500.00. THE ENGINE HAS 71,000 MILES ON IT THE EXTENDED WARRANTY RAN OUT AT 65,000. WHEN THE ENGINE FAILED, IT EFFECT THE BREAKING AND POWER STEERING. AFTER CAR WAS DRIVEN TO WORK APPROXIMATELY 5 MILES. MY EMPLOYERS SECURITY DEPARTMENT NOTIFIED ME THAT MY CAR HAD CAUGHT ON FIRE, WHILE PARKED ABOUT AN HOUR AND A HALF AFTER ARRIVING TO WORK. I CONTACTED FORD ONCE IN JAN. '05 AND AGAIN IN FEB. '05 ABOUT THE RECALL ON THE SPEED CONTROL SWITCH ON MY 2000 EXPEDITION. THEY SAID I WOULD GET IT IN THE MAIL SHORTLY. ITS BEEN 6 MONTHS AND STILL HAVE NOT RECEIVED A NOTIFICATION. I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE IT REPAIRED ASAP AT THEIR COST NOT MINE.

SMELLED SMOKE AFTER IGNITION. FOUND ELECTRICAL FIRE AFTER OPENING UP THE HOOD AT A SERVICE STATION. THE ATTENDANT QUICKLY EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE. TOWED THE CAR TO PREMIER FORD. OUR INSURANCE ADJUSTER FROM TSC DIRECT INSPECTED MY VEHICLE. HIS REPORT WAS THAT THERE OIL DRIPPING FROM A DEFECTIVE MASTER CYLINDER THAT CAUSED THE WIRING TO HEAT UP. THUS, CAUSING THE FIRE. WE THINK THAT FORD SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE BECAUSE THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE THAT COULD WARRANT A RECALL. HOWEVER, THEY DENY THE CLAIM BECAUSE WE ARE OVER THE 3-YEAR WARRANTY. THIS SHOULD NOT MAKE A DIFFERENCE. THIS IS A DANGEROUS SITUATION. THEREFORE, WE SHOULD BE REIMBURSED FOR THE FULL COST OF THE JOB, LABOR AND TOWING EXPENSES.*AK

OUR BELIEF IS THAT IT IS A PROBLEM WITH THE VEHICLE THAT IS RELATED TO MANUFACTURING AND THAT FORD SHOULD BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR WHAT HAPPENED ON FEBRUARY 12TH TO OUR VEHICLE. BATTERY KEPT DRAINING AND THE IGNITION CHIMED WITH KEY REMOVED. HEATER BLOWER RAN AFTER IGNITION WAS TURNED OFF AND TOUCH KEY PADS STUCK CAUSING LIGHTS TO STAY ON. ALL OF THESE SYMPTOMS WERE ATTRIBUTED TO A WATER LEAK IN THE WINDSHIELD WHICH LEAKED INTO A ELECTRICAL CONNECTION BLOCK BEHIND DRIVER'S SIDE DASHBOARD CAUSING A SHORT CIRCUIT. THE ELECTRICAL BLOCK MELTED AND CAUSED DAMAGE TO BLOCK AND WIRING AND WAS SUBSEQUENTLY REPLACED. WINDSHIELD WAS REMOVED AND RESEALED TO PREVENT RECURRENCE OF LEAK. *JB

SINCE THE EARLY 1960'S , I HAVE BEEN VERY AWARE OF MANY FORD PRODUCTS THAT THE BRAKE/SYOP LIGHTS FAIL TO ACTIVATE WHEN THE VEHICLE S BRAKES ARE APPLIED TO STOP OR SLOW THE VEHICLE. I HAVE DRIVEN FOR A LIVING SINCE THE EARLY 60'S AND THE PROBLEM STILL EXISTS TODAY ON MANY FORD PRODUCTS THE SAME AS IT ALWAYS HAS. I HAVE PERSONALLY STOPPED AND TOLD MANY OF THOSE DRIVERS IN AN ATTEMPT TO PREVENT THEM FROM BEING REAR-ENDED DUE TO THE VEHICLE BEHIND THEM NOT BEING ALERTED TO THE FACT THAT THEY ARE SLOWING/STOPPING. AT ONE TIME I WAS TOLD THAT THE PROBLEM WAS THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH LOCATET UNDER THE DASH THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO ACTIVATE THE BRAKE LIGHTS WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS PUSHED. I DO NOT KNOW IF ANY CORRECTIONS WERE EVER MADE TO THAT PROBLEM BUT AS RECENTLY AS THIS WEEK I HAVE BEEN FOLLOWING A FORD THAT DID NOT HAVE WORKING BRAKE LIGHTS WHEN IT STOPPED IN FRONT OF ME. I HAVE A 2000 FORD CONTOUR THAT I PURCHASED IN 2000 WHILE I LIVED IN NH. IN EARLY 2001, I MOVED OUT OF NH AND TO MA. FOAM COVER ON DASHBOARD HAS WARPED. EDGE NEAREST WINDSHIELD HAS CURLED UP AND IS NOW TOUCHING WINDSHIELD AT LEAST 5 INCHES FROM BASE. WARPED DASHBOARD BLOCKS AIR FROM DEFROSTER RESULTING IN SAFETY HAZARD AS VISIBILITY IS SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED ESPECIALLY IN COLD WEATHER. THIS IS THE RESULT OF A KNOWN DEFECT (TSB 01B78). FORD HAD AN OWNER NOTIFICATION PROGRAM IN PLACE BUT I NEVER RECEIVED A LETTER DESPITE OWNING THE CAR AND HAVING IT REGISTERED AT THE TIME. A SUPERVISOR AT THE FORD "CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIP CENTER" TOLD ME THAT "IT MUST HAVE BEEN LOST IN THE MAIL". I WAS TOLD THAT THE REPAIR OFFER HAS NOW EXPIRED. THE VINYL COVERING ON THE DASHBOARD IS PEELING AWAY FROM THE UNDERLYING STRUCTURE. IT HAS, OVER A PERIOD OF ABOUT 5 MONTHS, PEELED BACK FAR ENOUGH THAT IT OBSTRUCTS THE VIEW OUT OF THE WINDSHIELD. THE WINDSHIELD DEFROST VENT TRIM NO LONGER FITS INTO PLACE. THE DEFROSTER NO LONGER WORKS PROPERLY, AS THE VINYL NOW OBSTRUCTS THE AIR FLOW. THE VINYL IS ALSO IN SUCH A POSITION AS TO POTENTIALLY IMPEDE THE FUNCTON OF THE PASSENGER-SIDE AIRBAG. FORD HAS ISSUED A COUPLE OF 'CAMPAIGNS', AS THEY CALL IT, BUT BOTH HAVE EXPIRED. MY DASH WAS NOT WARPED DURING THE PERIOD OF THE CAMPAIGN, AND SO WAS NOT REPLACED AT THAT TIME. SINCE THE EXTENDED WARRANTY DOES NOT COVER THE DASH, FORD WILL NOT COVER THE FULL COST OF THE REPLACEMENT (~$1200). THE DASH ON A 3.5 YEAR CAR SHOULD NOT WARP SO BADLY IT LOOKS LIKE A PRINGLES CHIP. I NOTED THAT THE NG FUEL LEVEL WAS AT ZERO (OR CLOSE TO IT) AND THE ENIGINE SHOULD HAVE SEAMLESSLY KICKED INTO GASOLINE FUEL RESERVE, WHICH WAS FULL. MY 2000 FORD CONTOUR SE STARTING ACTING LIKE THERE WAS NO GAS AT AROUND 1/4 TANK. THIS CONTINUED EVERY TIME MY CAR GOT TO 1/4 TANK. MECHANIC REPLACED FUEL FILTER $54.90 FOR FILTER AND DIAGNOSTIC ON 3/13/07. IT STILL STUTTERING, HESITATED AND NOW WAS STALLING. MECHANIC REPLACED FUEL PUMP $297.22 ON 3/28/07. THE PROBLEM PERSISTED AND NOW IT WAS HAPPENING AT 1/2 TANK. ONCE SUMMER HIT, IT WAS WORSE WITH THE A/C. BETWEEN MARCH AND JUNE 2007, MECHANIC REPLACED PUMP ONCE AND FILTER TWICE. ON 6/27/07, CAR STALLED AND WOULD NOT RESTART, TANK WAS AT 1/2. MECHANIC REPLACED INTAKE MANIFOLD RUNNER CONTROL UNIT AND THE PROBLEM REMAINED. THE PROBLEM CONTINUED WITH HESITATING AND STALLING ESPECIALLY UPHILL. ON 8/21/07 REPLACED ALL THE SPARK PLUGS AND WIRES $234.90. THE PROBLEM CONTINUED. MY MECHANIC IS AT HIS WITS END. THE CODE ON THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ALWAYS THE SAME. ON 10/26/07, TOOK THE CAR BACK TO MY MECHANIC WHO HAD TO REPLACE THE INTAKE MANIFOLD RUNNER CONTROL UNIT AGAIN. DECIDED TO TAKE MY CAR TO A DIFFERENT MECHANIC DUE TO MY CURRENT ONE NOT FINDING THE PROBLEM. REPLACED 2 OXYGEN SENSORS THIS WEEK (11/7 AND 11/9) ONE UPSTREAM AND ONE DOWNSTREAM. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT HAS COME BACK ON ONCE AGAIN. IF THIS IS AN INTAKE MANIFOLD RUNNER CONTROL UNIT PROBLEM THEN EVERYONE THAT HAS HAD FUEL PUMPS REPLACED WILL HAVE TO HAVE THEM REPLACED AGAIN. THIS IS NOT ENJOYABLE SINCE I DRIVE 40 MILES A DAY TO WORK AND HALFWAY THERE I HAVE TO PULL OVER AND WAIT FOR THE CAR TO IDLE DOWN BEFORE I CAN DRIVE AGAIN OR IT WILL STALL. I HAD JUST GOT ON INTERSTATE WHEN MY CAR STARTED CUTTING OUT. THEN A CAR CAME FLYING UP BEHIND ME BUT WAS ABLE TO STOP & DID NOT HIT ME. THEN THE CAR BEHIND HIM HAD STOPPED BUT A TRUCK BEHIND HER WAS NOT ABLE TO STOP. HE HIT HER, SHE HIT THE MAN BEHIND ME AND HE HIT ME. PARAMEDICS WERE CALLED FOR A 4 YEAR OLD IN THE WOMANS CAR WHO SAID HIS HEAD HURT. WHILE DRIVING AT ANY GIVEN SPEED AND MAKING A TURN TO LEFT, CAR DOESN'T TURN LEFT. THEN, WHEN TURNING WHEEL SLIGHTLY MORE, VEHICLE WILL MAKE A SHARP TURN TO LEFT, CAUSING VEHICLE TO GET OUT OF THE INTENDED LANE TOWARDS VARIOUS OBJECTS, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH IF HITTING LEFT WALL OF FREEWAY. TO PREVENT A CRASH, CONSUMER MUST "FORCE" WHEEL TO RIGHT BECAUSE IT WILL NOT CORRECT ITSELF IF JUST LETTING GO. THIS DEFECT OCCURS EVERY TIME CONSUMER TURNS VEHICLE TO LEFT, AND IS ESPECIALLY BAD DURING WET CONDITIONS. PLEASE PROVIDE ANY ADDITIONAL INFORMATION/ATTACHMENTS. *AK
