How to read a Ford Contour VIN — every digit explained
Every Ford Contour carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.
- WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. Tells you it's a Ford and the country it was built in (real Ford codes below).
- VDS (4–8) — model, body style, engine, trim & restraints. The 8th digit is the engine code.
- Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
- Model year (10) — the year it was built (e.g. R = 2024, S = 2025).
- Plant (11) — which factory assembled this Contour.
- Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.
- USA1F1 · 1F7 · 1FA · 1FB · 1FM · 1FT
- Canada2FA · 2FM · 2FT · 2LM · 2LN · 2ME
- Mexico3FA · 3FB · 3FM · 3FT · 3LN · 3MA
- GermanyWF0 · WF1
- Norway1FL
Digits 4–17 — the engine code (8th), model-year letter (10th) and plant — follow the universal SAE standard, identical on every car. For the full year-code table (2001–2026), country codes and where the VIN is stamped on your Contour, see the complete guide to reading a VIN.

Risk. Consequence of non-compliance: if the window breaks, the glass fragments of the rear windows exceed the size specifications of fmvss no. 205.
Fix. Dealers will replace the right rear door glass.
Vehicle Speed Control:cables
What's wrong. Vehicle description: passenger vehicles equipped with the traction control option. The throttle cables were damaged during vehicle assembly leading to fraying or separation of the throttle cable.
Risk. This condition could prevent the engine from returning to idle.
Fix. Dealers will replace the throttle cable with a revised design that is less susceptible to bending or kinking during installation.
Fuel System, Gasoline:storage:tank Assembly:filler Pipe And Cap
What's wrong. The fuel tank filler pipe opening reinforcement can leak at the weld.
Risk. Fuel leakage can result in a fire.
Fix. Dealers will inspect and, as appropriate, replace the fuel tanks.
Fuel System, Gasoline:storage:tank Assembly:filler Pipe And Cap
What's wrong. A metal shield on the outside of the plastic fuel filler pipe can develop a static electrical charge during refueling of the vehicle.
Risk. A static charge can discharge and serve as an ignition source for fuel vapors in the area of the filler pipe, resulting in a flash vapor ignition and a vehicle fire.
Fix. Dealers will inspect and, if necessary, modify the vehicles by adding a ground strap between the filler pipe shield and the body.
Seat Belts:front:anchorage
What's wrong. Cracks have been found in the front safety belt outboard anchor tabs due to a combination of hydrogen embrittlement of the tab and stress introduced during attachment of the anchor tab to the seat frame. This does not conform with the requirements of fmvss no. 210, "seat belt assembly anchorages."
Risk. Consequence of non-compliance: a fracture or separation in this area would reduce the load that the anchor and the front safety belt anchorages could sustain, increasing the risk of injury in a vehicle collisoin.
Fix. Dealers will inspect and install an anchor tab reinforcement or replacement of the complete front seat belt assembly if an anchor tab is found to have fractured.
Power Train:automatic Transmission:lever And Linkage:floor Shift
What's wrong. Vehicle description: passenger vehicles. The floor shift automatic transmission control can be damaged if subjected to certain interior cleaning products. The gear position indicator can deteriorate and not correctly indicate the actual gear position.
Risk. This condition can result in incorrect gear selection.
Fix. Dealers will replace the automatic transmission floor shift control.
Fuel System, Gasoline:storage:tank Assembly:filler Pipe And Cap
What's wrong. The fuel tank filler pipe opening reinforcement, constructed from two separately molded pieces, can leak at the weld.
Risk. Fuel leakage can result in a fire.
Fix. Dealers will replace the fuel tank assemblies with units containing one-piece molded reinforcements.
Air Bags:frontal
What's wrong. The passenger side air bag has an inflator body that cracked during forming of the curl that retains the igniter plug in the end of the inflator. Also the igniter end cap can separate from the inflator.
Risk. The passenger side air bag may not inflate properly resulting in reduced occupant protection in a vehicle accident. If the igniter end cap separates in a frontal collision, hot gases can be released and ignite flammable material or cause burn injuries.
Fix. Dealers will remove and replace the passenger side air bag module.
Visibility:defroster/defogger/hvac System:windshield:electrical Heating Element
What's wrong. This is not a safety recall in accordance with the safety act. However, it is deemed a safety improvement campaign by the agency. Vehicle description: 1995-1997 ford contour and mercury mystique vehicles. The heater blower resistor could overheat causing the attached electrical connector to melt.
Risk. This could create the potential for a fire.
Fix. Ford will provide additional warranty coverage for the heater blower switch for 10 years from original date of sale of the vehicle or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first. Dealers will install a new heater blower resistor and a new wire jumper harness free of charge.
Engine And Engine Cooling
What's wrong. Vehicle description: 1995 passenger vehicles equipped with the 2.0l and 2.5l engines, and 1996 vehicles equipped with 2.5l engines. Tightening of the engine cooling fan motor bearings, up to and including motor stall, can result in increased motor torque and higher than normal motor current and accompanying high motor temperatures.
Risk. Overheating of the cooling fan motor due to excessive current can result in smoke and odors from bearing grease, insulation and other internal motor components. If electrical current continues to be applied to the motor, internal motor components could ignite possibly igniting other engine compartment components.
Fix. Dealers will install a positive temperature coefficient device in-line with each fan motor. Ford will also extend the warranty on the engine cooling fan assembly to a total of 8 years of service or 100,000 miles from the warranty start date, whichever occurs first. If the vehicle already has more than 100,000 miles, this coverage will last until july 31, 2001.
Service Brakes, Hydraulic
What's wrong. Certain aftermarket brake hydraulic master cylinders sold as replacement brake cylinders for certain ford, daimlerchrysler, and jeep passenger vehicles. These brake cylinders were sold under the brand names of napa, raybestos, aimco, ac delco, carquest, bendix, and wagner. Only products that were manufactured from july 27, 2005 through january 17, 2006 (date codes 0529 through 0602) are subject to this recall. When subject to very cold temperatures, an internal seal in the master cylinder could lose flexibility and may cause brake fluid to leak.
Risk. Loss of brake fluid can lead to a decrease in brake line pressure and an increase in stopping distance, which can result in a vehicle crash.
Fix. Affinia (brake parts, inc.) will replace the subject brake hydraulic master cylinders free of charge. The recall began on march 20, 2006. Owners can contact affina group customer service at 1-800-323-0354.
Suspension
What's wrong. Federal mogul is recalling 6,903 aftermarket ball joint assemblies shipped between november 9, 2007 and march 26, 2008, which may have been packaged with incorrect nuts. The part numbers packaged with incorrect nuts are: k7147, k7329, k8683, and 104353. These parts were made for use on the various vehicles listed above.
Risk. The nuts included in the packaging for these ball joint assemblies are missing the intended prevailing torque (self-locking) feature. If the incorrect nut was to become loose, the joining members may loosen leading to a separation of the ball joint. This may result in loss of vehicle control, possibly resulting in a vehicle crash.
Fix. Federal mogul will notify owners and replace the parts free of charge. The recall began on may 22, 2008. Owners can contact federal mogul at 877-489-6659.

This is a 2000 ford expedition. Last year there was a fire strarted by a relay failure in the engine compartment. This repair was $2300.00, $435.00 was not covered by the extended warranty we purchased. In the past month i have noticed paint failure leading to rust on the roof, and last friday the engine failed while my wife was driving. Catastrophic failure. Ford says we need a new engine which will cost $5,500.00. The engine has 71,000 miles on it the extended warranty ran out at 65,000. When the engine failed, it effect the breaking and power steering. Upon exiting the grocery story on tuesday march 29, 2005 i found my 2000 ford expedition on fire. Fortunately, there was a battalion of firemen shopping at the time & they were able to put out the fire very quickly. Because they were the fire captain asked me if i had had the car serviced, in particular the master brake cylinder, as that was obviously the point of origin. I said no. A passerby mentioned the recall (we had only just received a letter in the mail) and after remembering the contents of the letter we received did we realize this faulty part was the cause. We had our car towed to the ford dealer where we bought it and had only gotton the run around since. The fire damage was limited to our vehicle engine compartment as well as left front tire and area between the engine & tire. This was due to the close proximity of the firemen when fire broke out.*ak
(1) my wife drove our 2000 ford expedition to the grocery store on january 5th, 2005. When she came out, about 25 minutes later, the fire engine had arrived and was trying to put out the fire under the hood. They had to break the driver side window to get to to the hood release. 2) he insurance fire investigator claimed fire was caused by an alternator electrical short. But as we now know ford has acknowledged a problem with the cruise control deactivation switch overheating and causing fires. 3) we believe the problem was caused by the cruise control deactivation switch problem ford finally acknowledged having. *ak

Experienced transmission issues, with intermittent rough shifting and intermittent failures to engage in drive or reverse. It mysteriously started to run fine for several days. One morning i drove a short distance for an appointment. Upon returning and starting the car i noticed smoke exiting the left side of the engine compartment. I turned of the vehicle and inspected the engine compartment, and i could still see some smoke coming from the left-rear part of the engine compartment. After this incident, several of the vehicle's electrical functions failed, including park/brake shift interlock, heater fan, backup lights, directional flashers. Following the incident, the transmission issues have resumed. Upon inspection, i noticed several wires had cracking insulation, and some even had bare wire exposed. *tr

Dealership was aware of problem.*ak prior to recall 00v367, engine was overheating and burning excess oil from overheated piston rings, after recall repairs, there was an internal antifreeze leak that was going into motor oil, engine cooling fans were operating intermittently when engine was hot, dealer found upper radiator hose at water pump had a pinhole leak, engine cooling fan wiring overheated and burned out at fan relay and fan connectors, then consumer received recall 01i009 and had these repairs completed on vehicle, after recall repairs, engine and in-dash wiring overheated and burned, dealer installed recall parts for blower motor again, consumer later informed a new motor was needed due to no compression due to overheating damage. This took place prior to vehicle fire. Headlight and taillight lenses replaced. Overdrive light was inoperative, shift lever internal sliding bezel had a stress crack, at times it was hard to get out of park when temperature was cold. A/c did not blow cold air and was noisy. Fuel door would not open at times. Speedometer cable was replaced due to a ticking noise. *jb

Vehicle experiences continued problems with suspension stability and control, several replacements of suspension/steering components...tie rod/s bent/broken causing to lose control at low speed (thank god i wasn''t going faster at the time) wheels flopped on its sides continued 4 wheel alignment and replacement of several front end, arms, joints, tie rods, front end repairs costing $2000... Plus...vehicle sways all over the road and pulls right and then pulls left with a lot of play in steering wheel after several 4/wheel alignments. I have had the vehicle into courtesy ford mattydale ny several times now to fix front end. Now good year tells me they fell the tie rods need to be replaced again??? Problems \ this is a very dangerous situation and should be definitely a recall on the ford expiditions. Furthermore, all wheel drive / 4 wheel drive often is locked into 4 wheel will not come out of 4 wheel drive. ***also, digital dash short or loss of use lights on dash going out including odometer often go out and the turn back on i have seen several complaints regarding all of the above...for the 99 ford expeditions. *** the brake pedal also locks up if/when the tire spin or engine revs up you try to apply the breaks however, the break pedal will not move it's locked and will not move unlit tires stop spinning or eng. Stops revving...anti-lock problem???
