FIRESTONE TIRE RECALL/ REPLACEMENT FOR FORD EXPLORER CUSTOMER STATES THAT FIRESTONE REFUSED TO PROVIDE WARRANTY SERVICE**CC THE CONSUMER STATED HAD A PROBLEM WITH A TIRE RECALL ISSUED FOR HIS SPECIFIC VEHICLE. THE CONSUMER STATED TOOK THE VEHICLE IN FOR SERVICE ON THE RECALL BUT NOTICED THE DEALER INSTALLED PASSENGER CAR TIRES ON HIS TRUCK. THE CONSUMER STATED THAT THE PASSENGER TIRES WERE .75 INCHES SMALLER, THE CONSUMER STATED THE DEALER INFORMED HIM WHEN PERFORMING THE RECALL HE COULD USE ANY TIRE SIZE HE WANTED TO AND IT DIDNT HAVE TO BE COMPARABLE TO THE OLD TIRES. MY FORD EXPLORER WAS ORIGINALLY EQUIPPED WITH THE BRIDGESTONE-FIRESTONE TIRES THAT HAVE SINCE BEEN RECALLED. I REPLACED THESE TIRES IN 2003 WITHOUT EVER HAVING ANY NOTICE OF THE RECALL. RECENTLY I RECEIVED A LETTER STATING THAT I COULD GET MY TIRES REPLACED FOR FREE. THIS WAS THE FIRST NOTICE OF THE RECALL....AT LEAST 4 YEARS AFTER THE SUPPOSED RECALL. AND YES, I HAVE BEEN THE OWNER OF THE VEHICLE AND LIVING AT THE SAME ADDRESS FOR MORE THAN 10 YEARS. *JB

I RECEIVED A LETTER FROM FIRESTONE REGARDING THE RADIAL ATX TIRES RECALL DATED SEPTEMBER 2006. ON OCTOBER 4, 2006 I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO THE FIRESTONE STORE AT 7511 NE HIGHWAY 99, VANCOUVER, WA 98665. THEIR SERVICE MAN, BILL AULTMAN, VERIFIED THE TIRE IN QUESTION AND SAID THAT HE WOULD CALL BACK THAT DAY TO ARRANGE FOR REPLACEMENT OF THE RECALLED TIRE. HE NEVER CALLED ME BACK. OCTOBER 6, 2006 I CALLED THE SERVICE MAN (AULTMAN) TO FIND OUT STATUS AND TO ASK WHY HE HAD NOT CALLED ME. HE STATED THAT HE WOULD CHECK ON TIRES AND WOULD CALL ME BACK THAT SAME DAY (FRIDAY) OR FOR SURE THE FOLLOWING MONDAY. HE NEVER CALLED ME BACK. OCTOBER 16, 2006 I CALLED THE FIRESTONE STORE AND ASKED FOR THE PETE DESCHNER, MANAGER. HE WAS NOT IN. OCTOBER 18, 2006 I CALLED THE FIRESTONE STORE AND TALKED WITH PETE DESCHNER, MANAGER. I TOLD DESCHNER ABOUT THE CALLS TO AULTMAN WITH NO RESULTS. DESCHNER SAID HE WOULD CHECK OF AVAILABILITY OF TIRES AND THAT HE WOULD CALL ME BACK "TODAY OR TOMORROW FOR SURE". HE NEVER CALLED ME BACK. OCTOBER 23, 2006 I CALLED THE FIRESTONE STORE AND TALKED TO DESCHNER REGARDING THE RECALLED TIRE AND ASKED WHY NONE OF MY CALLS WERE RETURNED. HE STATED THAT THERE WAS NO REASON TO CALL IF THERE ARE NO TIRES. I MENTIONED THAT HE HAD SAID HE WOULD CALL ME "FOR SURE" AND THAT I WAS NOT SATISFIED THAT HE AND THE SERVICE MAN WERE SIMPLY IGNORING ME. DESCHNER STATED THAT HE WOULD BE GETTING SOME TIRES IN TODAY OR TOMORROW AND THAT HE WOULD CALL ME BACK. HE NEVER CALLED ME BACK. OCTOBER 31, 2006 I CALLED THE FIRESTONE MANAGER, PETE DESCHNER AGAIN AND INQUIRED ABOUT THE TIRE. DESCHNER SAID HE WOULD HAVE BILL AULTMAN CALL ME BACK FOR SURE TO ARRANGE FOR THE TIRE REPLACEMENT. HE NEVER CALLED ME BACK. AFTER ONE PERSONAL VISIT TO THE FIRESTONE STORE AND FIVE PHONE CALLS AND BEING TOLD EACH TIME THEY WOULD CALL BACK AND THEY CONTINUE TO IGNORE ME I AM FED UP. *JB

THE DEALER WOULD NOT REPLACE THE TIRE UNDER THE RECALL BECAUSE THE DEALER BELIEVED THE TIRE CAME FROM A JUNK YARD. I AM THE OWNER OF A 1992 FORD EXPLORER AND HAVE NOTICED THAT THE FACTORY INSTALLED ROOF RACK IS VERY UNSTABLE AND WOBBLY. I AM CONCERNED THAT IF I SECURE MY PROPERTY TO THE RACK, THAT I RUN THE RISK OF LOSING IT ON THE ROAD AND POSSIBLY CREATING HAZARDOUS CONDITIONS FOR OTHER DRIVERS. AT 5:30 A.M. ON FEBRUARY 22, 2006, I AWOKE TO A LOUD EXPLOSION. I WENT TO LOOK OUT MY KITCHEN WINDOW AND UNDER THE CARPORT OUR FORD EXPLORER HAD FLAMES COMING OUT OF THE HOOD. AS I WAS TALKING TO 911 TO REPORT THE FIRE I HEARD ANOTHER EXPLOSION. HUNG UP QUICKLY TO GO AND GET ALL OF OUR 4 CHILDREN OUT OF THE HOUSE AND AS WE WERE GOING OUT HEARD ANOTHER EXPLOSION. THANK GOD WE ALL GOT OUT AND THE FIRE DEPT. GOT THE FIRE OUT BEFORE THE HOUSE WENT WITH THE FIRE. WE COULD SEE AFTER THE FIRE WAS OUT THAT THE DRIVERS SIDE FRONT TIRE WAS BLOWN OFF AND THE BATTERY WAS BLOWN UP AS WELL AS THE FRONT WINDSHIELD. DT:THE CONTACTS STATED WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 10 MPH THEN PARKED IN A PARKING LOT FOR 20 MINUTES AND THE VEHICLE CAUGHT ON FIRE. THERE WERE NO INDICATOR LIGHTS ON PRIOR TO THE FIRE. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS CALLED AND THE FIRE WAS EXTINGUISHED. THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE WAS UNKNOWN AT THIS TIME; HOWEVER THE FIRE DEPARTMENT SAID THE FIRE COULD POSSIBLY HAVE STARTED FROM THE ENGINE OR FAULTY WIRING. THE DASHBOARD AREA AND UNDER THE HOOD WAS COMPLETELY DESTROYED. I BOUGHT A 1992 FORD EXPLORER ON 2-16-2005 FROM A PRIVITE PARTY THRU THE NEWPAPER. ON 04-16-05 I WAS DRIVING TO SOFTBALL PRACVICE ON A BUSY ROAD WHEN A GENTLEMAN NEXT TO ME IN HIS OWN VEHICLE YELLED GET OUT OF YOUR CAR IT IS ON FIRE. HE LET ME TURN IN FRONT OF HIM AND I PULLED IN TO A PARKING SPACE AND GOT OUT OF MY CAR. WITHIN 3 TO 4 MINUTES THE FRONT END OF MY CAR WAS COMPELETLY IN FLAMES. ALL THE WIDOWS BROKE AND THE TIRES POPPED. THE SEAT I WAS SITTING IN ONLY MINUTES BEFORE WAS COMPLETELY IN FLAMES. THE FIREMEN CAME AND PUT THE FIRE OUT. BY THEN MY FORD EXPLORER WAS TOTLED. I WAS VERY LUCKY I DID NOT HAVE MY STEPCHILDREN WITH ME THAT DAY AND I WAS TOLD TO GET OUT OF MY CAR IN TIME FOR MYSELF NOT TO HAVE BEEN HURT. I ONLY HAD LIABILTIY INSURANCE ON THE VEHICLE AND MY PERSONAL BELONGINGS WERE BURNT. THERE IS A RECALL ON THE VEHICLE THAT CAN CAUSE SMOKE AND FIRE.I CALLED THE FORD COMPANY AND TOLD THEM WHAT HAPPENED THEY SAID THEY WILL GET BACK TO ME ABOUT THE SITUATION. I RECIEVED A GENERIC LETTER FROM THEM SAYING THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO TO HELP ME. I FEEL VERY LUCKY IN A SENCE THAT I DID NOT LOSE MY LIFE THAT DAY, BUT ALSO VERY VIOLATED THAT I NOW HAVE TO BUY A NEW CAR AND REPLACE BELONGINGS THAT WERE DESTROYED.

CONTACTED FORD MOTOR COMPANY AND THEY COULD ONLY SUGGEST THREE PHONE NUMBERSOF COMPANIES THAT DEAL IN DISCONTINUED PARTS. NONE OF THOSE PLACES HAVE THE PART EITHER. APPARENTLY FORD ISN'T INTERESTED IN REPAIRING OR PROVIDING A PART TO FIX THIS VEHICLE. THE PROBLEM IS THAT THE POWER STEERING WILL INTERMITTENTLY FREEZE UP, OR STOP OPERATING ALTOGETHER DURING A TURN. IT ACTS EXACTLY LIKE IT WOULD IF THE SERPENTINE BELT WERE OFF (NOT THE CASE). IF YOU FORCE A TURN, IT WILL ACT NORMALLY AGAIN.THIS IS VERY INTERMITTENT FAILURE. THE POWER STEERING PUMP HAS BEEN REPLACED TWICE (FOR OTHER REASONS), BUT THE PROBLEM IS STILL THERE. WHILE SOMEONE WHO IS STRONG MAY BE ABLE TO CONTINUE A TURN WITHOUT THE USE OF THE POWER STEERING, SOMEONE WHO IS NOT MAY BE UNABLE TO CONTROL THE VEHICLE AND AN ACCIDENT MAY RESULT. WITHIN 24 HOURS OF BUYING MY 2002 FORD EXPLORER SPORT TRAC, I EXPERIENCED MY FIRST PROBLEM WITH THIS VEHICLE. I TOOK THE VEHICLE HOME ON SEPTEMBER 14, 2002, SATURDAY AFTERNOON AFTER BUYING IT AND ON SUNDAY (9/15) WITH MY WIFE IN THE CAR, THE VEHICLE STARTED HESITATING/JERKING AND FINALLY STALLED OUT WHILE DRIVING DOWN A COUNTRY ROAD. IT SEEMED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT GETTING ANY GAS. I WAS ABLE TO GET THE VEHICLE STARTED AGAIN AND I IMMEDIATELY TOOK THE VEHICLE BACK TO BE CHECKED AND WAS TOLD IT WOULD BE FIXED. I RECEIVED A CALL FROM FUTURE FORD TELLING ME THAT I SHOULD ONLY FILL THE GAS TANK FULL TO AVOID PROBLEMS. I INFORMED THE FUTURE FORD REPRESENTATIVE THAT THIS WAS NOT AN ACCEPTABLE OPTION FOR A BRAND NEW VEHICLE. I HAVE TAKEN THIS VEHICLE BACK TO FUTURE FORD 6+ TIMES FOR THE SAME PROBLEM AND IN EACH CASE IT WAS NOT FIXED, OR IT CANNOT BE FIXED. ONE TIME THIS LAST SUMMER IN 100+ DEGREE HEAT, MY WIFE AND I STOPPED AT A SHOPPING MALL. WHEN WE STARTED TO LEAVE THE MALL, THE VEHICLES AIR-CONDITIONING WOULD NOT WORK, AS WE STARTED DRIVING IT STARTED HESITATING AND THEN BLACK SMOKE WAS COMING OUT THE TAIL PIPE AND IT WAS JERKING VIOLENTLY. I WAS CLOSE TO THE DEALERSHIP AND I IMMEDIATELY DROVE IT TO THE DEALER. FUTURE FORD DEALERSHIP STATES THEY ARE UNABLE TO FIND ANYTHING WRONG, BUT THEY HAVE REPLACED PARTS THEY THOUGHT WERE CAUSING THE PROBLEM AND OTHER ITEMS THEY FOUND WRONG. WHY OR HOW THEY CANNOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE IS BEYOND ME. THIS VEHICLE HAS STALLED OUT OR HESITATED NUMEROUS TIMES BESIDES THOSE I HAVE TAKEN IT IN FOR. I HAVE BEEN FORTUNATE TO THIS POINT THAT WHEN IT HESITATES AND/OR STALLS OUT THAT I HAVE NOT BEEN IN THE MIDDLE OF TURNING RIGHT OR LEFT OR HEAVY COMMUTER TRAFFIC. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1992 FORD EXPLORER. WHILE AT A STOP SIGN SMOKE ASCENDED FROM UNDERNEATH THE HOOD, AND CONTACT COULD SMELL SOMETHING BURNING. I FOUND THAT THE + CONNECTOR ON THE WIRE TO THE BATTERY HAD CRACKED MAKING A LOOSE CONNECTION. I AM AN ENGINEER WHO DESIGNS MICROPROCESSOR CONTROL SYSTEMS AND BELIEVE THIS IS A SOFTWARE PROBLEM. IT IS MY OPINION THAT THIS INTERMITENT CONNECTION BRAKE TO THE BATTERY (SPIKE OR LOSS OF VOLTAGE) CAUSED THE COMPUTER TO RESET AND OPEN THE IDLE ADJUST CONTROL VALVE MOMENTARILY AS IF THE ENGINE WAS FIRST BEING STARTED. I BELIEVE THIS PROBLEM COULD EASILY BE REPEATED IN A TEST AND I WOULD HAVE DONE IT IF THERE WASN'T A GOOD CHANCE THAT I COULD HAVE ZAPPED MY COMPUTER AT MY EXPENSE. THIS IS THE SECOND INCIDENT OF THIS KIND SINCE I PURCHASED THIS CAR IN 9/1998. THE FIRST INCIDENT OCCURRED IN 2/99. I DID NOT REPORT THAT ONE, BECAUSE I WASN'T AWARE THAT I COULD. IN BOTH INSTANCES, I WAS DRIVING AND NOTICED THAT MY CAR WAS ACTING STANGE, DRIVING ROUGH LIKE A FLAT TIRE. I WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD BOTH TIMES (GUARDIAN ANGEL MUST HAVE BEEN WATCHING OUT FOR ME). I LOOKED FOR A FLAT, AND DID NOT SEE ONE, SO I PROCEEDED TO DRIVE AWAY, WHEN THE NOISE WAS MUCH LOUDER (METAL AGAINST METAL). WHEN I GOT OUT OF THE VEHICLE, THE RIGHT REAR WHEEL (SAME WHEEL BOTH TIMES) WAS ON A DIAGONAL. ALL OF THE LUG NUTS WERE SEVERED OFF AND THE WHEEL CAME OFF WITH JUST A PULL. THE SECOND TIME THIS OCCURRED (2/11/2002) I DID REPORT IT TO FORD AND TO MY INSURANCE COMPANY. I AM VERY CONCERNED THAT THIS NOT HAPPEN TO SOMEONE ELSE, WHO MAY NOT BE AS LUCKY AS I WAS. WHENEVER I HAVE MY CAR SERVICED ON A REGULAR BASIS. I HAD NEW BRAKES INSTALLED IN 7/2002, AND THAT WAS THE LAST TIME THAT MY WHEEL HAD BEEN WORKED ON. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1992 FORD EXPLORER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHEN DEPRESSING THE BRAKES AT LOW SPEEDS, SHE NOTICED A GRINDING NOISE. THE VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED BY AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC AND THEY ADVISED HER THAT THE FRONT DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE BRAKES AND ROTORS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. IN ADDITION, WHEN TURNING THE HEATER ON SHE COULD SMELL ANTI-FREEZE AND ALSO NOTICED A LEAK. THE INDEPENDENT MECHANIC ADVISED HER THAT THE HEATER COIL AS WELL AS THE BRAKE LINES NEEDED TO BE REPLACED DUE TO SEVERE RUSTING. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER HAD NOT BEEN CONTACTED. THE FAILURE AND THE CURRENT MILEAGES WERE UNKNOWN.

ENGINE BACKFIRE CAUSES SUDDEN LOSS OF BRAKES. SEVEN VACUUM HOSES TIE INTO THE ONE PIPE AND THEN INTO THE INTAKE MANIFOLD. ONLY THE BRAKE VACUUM ASSIST HAS A CLAMP ON THE HOSE. WHEN THE ENGINE BACKFIRES INTO THE INTAKE MANIFOLD, IT BLEW OFF THREE OF THESE HOSES RESULTING IN INADEQUATE VACUUM FOR THE POWER ASSIST BRAKES. THE ENGINE FUNS VERY ROUGH BUT MAYBE IT WILL SMOOTH OUT WHEN DRIVEN A LITTLE. SO, YOU DRIVE AND SUDDENLY FIND NO BRAKES. IF YOU ARE LUCKY, YOU HAVE TIME AND ROOM ENOUGH TO STOP.

HE HAD TO INSTALL SPRING SUPPORT MEMBER CUT OFF RIVETS AND REPAIR CHASSIS AND NEW BRAKE HOSE AND STEEL LINES.
