The transmission stopped going in reverse for no apparent reason. All other gears work fine. There’s no lagging when driving and no other signs. I went to put it in reverse to back out of my driveway and when I pushed the gas it just reved the engine up and floated backwards causing me to apply the brakes quickly so I wouldn’t hit my house. There was smoke coming up from the transmission fluid container.The smoke continues to this day and there’s the proper amount/ plenty of transmission fluid in the transmission container.

WAS DRIVING AROUND THE CITY WHEN I REACH INTO MY POCKET TO GET MY PHONE AND HEAR A LOUD THUMP COMING FROM THE SEAT AND THE NEXT THING I NOTICE IS THE SEAT RECLINING ALL THE WAY BACK. I WAS ABLE TO BRING IT BACK UP BY FOLDING THE EXTERIOR PASSENGER SEAT TO PROVIDE SOME SORT OF SUPPORT. WHEN I ARRIVED HOME I TRIED INSPECTING WHAT THE ISSUE WAS AND SAW A LARGE FRACTURE RIGHT NEXT TO THE RECLINING MECHANISM. THIS IS POTENTIALLY A HAZARD THAT CAN ONE DAY CAUSE A SEVERE ACCIDENT. TOW DRIVER IMMEDIATELY NOTICED AFTER PLACING VEHICLE ON HIS TRUCK THAT PART OF THE INNER OPERATIONS OF THE INTERMEDIATE STEERING CONTROL ARM ON ONE SIDE HAD CORRODED AND BROKE. HE STATED THAT THIS IS WHY OUR SON WAS NOT ABLE TO CONTROL THE VEHICLE. HE SUGGESTED FOR US TO CALL THE MAKER OF THE VEHICLE AND SEE IF THE PART IS ON RECALL AND TO TAKE PICTURES BECAUSE THIS WAS A COMPONENT OF THE VEHICLE THAT SHOULDN'T HAVE GONE BAD. THE STEERING AND BRAKES WERE COMPLETELY SEVERED WHEN THIS PART OF THE STEERING CORRODED AND SNAPPED UPON A SIMPLE MANUEVER. WE HAVE NOT HAD THE VEHICLE REPAIRED BECAUSE WE HAVE BEEN ADVISED THAT THIS IS A PRODUCT LIABILITY SITUATION BY AN ATTORNEY. OUR SON WAS NOT INJURED. AND ALL OF THE DAMAGE IS UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE. FOR YEARS NOW, THE VEHICLE WILL STALL WHILE DRIVING. IT CAN HAPPEN IN TOWN OR ON HIGHWAYS. AT TIMES IT WILL START RIGHT BACK UP AND IS DRIVABLE. OTHER TIMES IT NEEDS TO SIT FOR 15-20 MINUTES BEFORE BEING ABLE TO START AND DRIVE THE VEHICLE, ALTHOUGH SOMETIMES IT WILL START AFTER A SHORT TIME, BUT SPUTTER AND STALL AGAIN WHEN PUTTING THE VEHICLE IN DRIVE. THIS STARTED HAPPENING ABOUT 10-YEARS AGO, AND ALL THE LIKELY CAUSES HAVE BEEN CHECKED OR FIXED (I.E FUEL FILTER REPLACED). IT SEEMS TO USUALLY, IF NOT ALWAYS, HAPPEN DURING SPRING/SUMMER MONTHS WHEN IT IS WARM. NO MECHANIC, INCLUDING AT FORD DEALERSHIPS HAVE BEEN ABLE TO IDENTIFY ANY PROBLEMS. IT IS DEFINITELY A SAFETY ISSUE AS IT WILL STALL ON BUSY INTERSTATES AT SPEED LIMITS. THIE DATE AND INFO I USED FOR THIS POSTS WAS SIMPLY THE MOST CURRENT EVENT, BUT THE SAME EVENTS HAVE BEEN HAPPENING CONSISTENTLY FOR MANY YEARS.

I OWN TWO FORDS; A 1999 RANGER XLT EXT. CAB AND A 1999 EXPLORER - EDDIE BAUER. BOTH ARE EQUIPPED WITH A CD/CASSETTE/AM-FM RADIO COMBINATION. THE DISPLAY LIGHTS ON BOTH RADIOS UNITS DO NOT WORK. THE INTERNET IS FULL OF OTHER OWNERS WITH THE SAME COMPLAINT. MY MECHANIC SAID IT WAS A MANUFACTURER DEFECT. I CALLED A FORD DEALER AND WAS TOLD THAT WHEN THESE UNITS WERE PRODUCED, THE DEFECT EXISTED. IT IS IN THE WAY THE WIRING WAS SOLDERED IN. WHY HAS THIS NOT BEEN RECALLED? FORD WILL FIX IT FOR 400.00!! MY VEHICLES' OEM RADIO DISPLAY HAS SHORTED OUT AFTER ONLY 4 YEARS OF LIGHT USE. I KNOW THIS HAS BEEN AN ONGOING PROBLEM WITH THE PARTICULAR RADIOS IN 1997-2001 MODELS OF THE EXPLORER. THE UNIT ALSO HEATS CD'S TO HIGH TEMPERATURES, MAKING ME THINK THAT IT EITHER WILL CATCH THE VEHICLE ON FIRE, OR MELT A CD. Was driving under 20mph on my way home about 5 minutes away no warning no sounds nothing warned us that our tire was going to fall off the drivers side while driving with other vehicles on the road behind us and in passing us all 5 studs that hold the lugnuts on so tire stays on but all 5 studs broke and tire just fell off thank god no one got hurt. Just caused a anxiety attack I was scared that bad and that's bad enough. Plus had to have it towed costing $60.00 less than 5 mins. Away to get it home now it's sitting on a Jack with scotches and now I have to hope I can get help with getting my son to elementary school. My only car not now.

Gas pedal bracket fell off the firewall of the vehicle.jamming up under the brake pedal almost caused and accident. I got the vehicle stopped by using the Emergency brake did a temporary repair to get my vehicle to a shop to see about having repair done. After the vehicle was at the shop and repair was done the garage had informed me of the pour weld condition from the the gas pedal bracket was installed. Said repair was in deed done by the shop with all new weld being done and adjusted. After looking online for gas pedal problems for these vehicles Ford needs to have a nationwide recall to repair or replace these before someone gets serious injury or even death from a accident

I WAS AT WORK ON FRIDAY AFTERNOON, 5/16 AND RECEIVED A VOICEMAIL AT 3:50PM FROM THE FIRE MARSHALL STATING MY 1999 FORD EXPLORER XLT BURNED IN MY DRIVEWAY AND WAS TOTALED. I HAD NOT DRIVEN THE EXPLORER SINCE APPROXIMATELY 7PM THE NIGHT BEFORE AND HAD TAKEN MY OTHER CAR TO WORK. THE EXPLORER WAS JUST SITTING IN THE DRIVEWAY, OUTSIDE THE GARAGE AND STARTED BURNING. A NEIGHBOR 2 HOUSES OVER SMELLED THE SMOKE AND SAW THE FLAMES AND CALLED THE FIRE DEPARTMENT. THE FIRE MARSHALL STATED HE HAD SEEN THIS TYPE OF FIRE BEFORE DUE TO THE FORD CRUISE CONTROL RECALL PROBLEMS, BASED ON THE BURN PATTERN. I WAS NOT THE ORIGINAL OWNER AND BOUGHT IT ABOUT 8 YEARS AGO AND HAVE NEVER RECEIVED ANY KIND OF RECALL NOTICE. FRONT WINDSHIELD WIPER FAILURE:FRONT WINDSHIELD WIPERS FAIL TO WORK CONSISTENTLY. WIPERS COME ON EVEN THOUGH IT IS SET TO THE OFF POSITION. SOMETIMES WIPERS DO NOT COME ON WHEN THEY ARE TURNED TO THE ON POSITION. IN ORDER FOR WIPERS TO WORK CONSISTENTLY THEY WOULD HAVE TO BE MANUALLY ENGAGE WITH HAND AND HAND HAS TO BE KEPT ON THE WIPER CONTROL SWITCH SWITCHING IT ON AND OFF TO MOVE THE WIPER BLADES. WIPERS WOULD COME ON INTERMITTENTLY WHILE DRIVING. WIPERS WOULD ACT ERRATICALLY AND FAIL TO OPERATE PROPERLY 90% OF THE TIME. WIPERS SOMETIMES WOULD COME ON AFTER VEHICLE HAS WARMED UP. WIPERS CAN COME ON ANYTIME WHILE DRIVING. FAULTY HOOD/WEAK HYDRAULIC ARMS: THE HOOD CANNOT SAFELY STAY UP BECAUSE THE HYDRAULIC ARM SUPPORTS ARE TOO WEAK TO HOLD THE WEIGHT OF THE HOOD. THE HOOD SUPPORT DOES NOT LOCK INTO PLACE SO THAT THE HOOD WOULD STAY UP SAFELY. NO SAFETY BAR WAS INSTALLED ON THIS VEHICLE TO SAFELY HOLD UP/PROP UP THE HOOD IN CASE OF HYDRAULIC ARM/SUPPORT FAILURE. IF THE VEHICLE GETS BUMPED WHILE THE HOOD IS UP THE HOOD WOULD FALL AND CLOSE SHUT. BECAUSE THE HOOD WILL NOT STAY UP IT REQUIRES TWO PEOPLE WHEN CHECKING UNDER THE HOOD. WHEN IT IS HOT OUTSIDE, THE CAR WILL NOT START. IT JUST CRANKS AND CRANKS,BUT, WILL NOT TURN OVER.....AS IF IT WAS OUT OF GAS WHEN IT IS NOT. THERE ARE MANY TRICKS TO GETTING THIS THING TO START THOUGH. IF THE WINDOWS ARE ROLLED UP ALL OF THE WAY, AND IT HAS NOT BEEN DRIVEN BEFORE NOON, IT WONT START. IF I DRIVE IT IN THE MORNING WHEN IT IS COOL OUTSIDE, IT WILL ALMOST ALWAYS START LATER IN THE DAY. IF I DON'T DRIVE IT UNTIL THE AFTERNOON, AND THE WINDOWS HAVE BEEN LEFT DOWN AND IT IS PARKED IN THE SHADE, IT WILL ALMOST ALWAYS START. THIS PROBLEM HAS BECOME A NIGHTMARE. DT: THE CONTACT HAS A 2005 CHALET, WHEN GOING ON VACATION YES THE AXLE BROKE. THE TRAILER WAS BEING TOWED AT 55-60 MPH. WHEN THE AXLE BROKE IT CAUSED DAMAGE TO SEVERAL PARTS OF THE TRAVEL TRAILER AND TIRE. THERE WAS SMOKE DAMAGE FROM THE TIRE AND STRUCTURAL DAMAGE TO THE CABINETS AND UNDER CARRIAGE. I HAD TO PAY 1300.OO FOR MY WARRANTY AND I HAVE HAD TO PAY ALMOST 700.00 SINCE THEN ON THE WORK FOR EVERYTHING GOING WRONG WITH THE EXPLORER. I HAVE ALL OF MY RECEIPTS BEING GATHERED . WE HAVE HAD A HOOD LATCH RECALL, CRUISE CONTROL RECALL, QUESTIONS ABOUT A TIRE RECALL (FIRESTONE), POWER STEERING FLUID LEAK, CV BOOT RIP, WIPERS TURNING ON WITH THE TURN SIGNAL, 1 ENGINE REPLACED DUE TO 0 PSI OIL AT IDLE (DID THEY REALLY REPLACE IT OR JUST SAY THEY DID?) SEVERAL INDEPENDENT RE-EVALUATIONS AFTER THE "NEW" ENGINE HAD EVEN MORE NOISES, FUEL INJECTORS REPLACED, A MYSTERIOUS CLUNKING SOUND ON THE RIGHT SIDE DURING LEFT TURNS, ~5000MI AFTER 1ST ENGINE "REPLACEMENT" ANOTHER FORD REPAIR CENTER IS NOW SAYING THAT THE ENGINE HAS 0PSI AT AND WE NEED ANOTHER ENGINE. WE FEEL LIKE THIS 99 EXPLORER (WITH CURRENTLY <35,000MI)IS A LEMON AND WE ARE TIRED OF RECALLS, REPAIRS, WAITING FOR ENGINES. WE WANT A DEPENDABLE CAR! WE HAVE TAKEN IMMACULATE CARE OF THE CAR, HAVE HAD PROFESSIONALS DO THE WORK ON IT (USUALLY FORD DEALERSHIPS) AND YET WE ARE AFRAID THAT THE WARRENTEE WILL RUN OUT AND WE WILL HAVE AN EXPENSIVE PROBLEM OR, WORSE, THE CAR WILL FAIL AND SOMEONE WILL GET HURT! I PURCHASED THIS 99 EXPLORER IN FEBRUARY AND ALREADY IT HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP SEVERAL TIMES FOR DIFFERENT DEFECTS INCLUDING ON THE FIRST DAY I BOUGHT THE TRUCK AND TOOK IN HOME WITH 6 MILES ON IT THE TRANSMISSION BEGAN SLIPPING AND EVENTUALLY WENT OUT ON THE TRUCK. SINCE IT WAS A SATURDAY THAT THIS HAPPENED THE TRUCK SAT TILL MONDAY WHEN THE DEALER HAD IT TOWED BACK (I DID NOTICE TRANSMISSION FLUID ON THE GROUND).THE DEALER SAID THIS PROBLEM WAS DUE TO A CONNECTOR ON THE TRANSMISSION FLUID LINE NOT BEING SEALED OR TIGHTENED. I ASKED IF THERE WAS DAMAGE TO THE TRANSMISSION WHICH THEY SAID IT WOULDN'T BE BUT THIS LEADS ME TO MY NEXT PROBLEM. THE TRUCK DOES NOT ACCELERATE THROUGH THE GEARS PROPERLY BUT FORD SAYS THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH AFTER LOOKING AT IT AGAIN. NEXT IT WAS IN FOR THE SPEED CONTROL CABLE WHICH THEY SENT A LETTER TO ME FOR BUT DID NOT HAVE THE CABLE IN STOCK AND WERE SUPPOSE TO DISABLE THE SPEED CONTROL UNTIL ONE CAME IN. THEY DID NOT DISABLE IT WHICH WAS VERY HAZARDOUS SAFETY WISE. NEXT THE TRUCK HAS BEEN IN BECAUSE ONE OF THE SPEAKERS WAS BLOWN AND IN FACT AFTER GETTING THAT ONE REPLACED THE OTHERS SOUND JUST AS BAD AS THE BLOWN ONE AND THE RADIO HAS NEVER BEEN TURNED PAST HALFWAY. MY LATEST PROBLEM IS THAT MY WINDSHIELD WIPERS WILL COME ON SPORACTICALLY AT ANY TIME AND STAY ON FOR ABOUT 30 SECONDS AND I CANNOT TURN THEM OFF SEEING AS I DIDN'T TURN THEM ON. THIS HAPPENS ABOUT EVERY 45 MINUTES TO AN HOUR. I HAVE NOT BEEN TO THE DEALER ABOUT THIS BECAUSE ONE I AM VERY UNHAPPY ABOUT THE VEHICLE AND AM TIRED OF FINDING ANOTHER MEANS FOR TRANSPORTATION WHILE THEY FIX MY TRUCK. I EVEN ASKED FOR ANOTHER TRUCK BUT WAS TOLD THAT THERE SHOULDN'T BE MOE PROBLEMS WITH THE TRUCK, THIS WAS AFTER THE TRANSMISSION WENT ON THE FIRST DAY I BOUGHT IT. *AK
