The contact owns a 2005 Ford Five Hundred. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle made an abnormal knocking sound. The vehicle was taken to two independent mechanics, where the flywheel was replaced twice with used parts because the part had been discontinued. The contact stated that while her son was driving approximately 20 MPH, the vehicle stalled. The check transmission warning light, the check engine warning light, and other unknown warning lights were illuminated. The driver was able to pull over to the side of the road. The vehicle was able to restart but was undrivable. The vehicle was towed to the residence. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 80,000.

While waiting at the light in traffic, my car all of a sudden Accelerated, and decelerates, I have to push hard on the breaks in order for it to not slam into the cars infront of me.. this is really dangerous, from what I have been reading this is a wide spread issue that ford has ignored for years..

I STOPPED ON A CITY STREET AT STOP SIGN. AS I TRIED TO ACCELERATE, BUT THE CAR WOULD BARELY MOVE. THE THROTTLE CONTROL/TRANSMISSION WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. I TURNED THE CAR OFF AND LET IT SIT FOR ABOUT 2 TO 3 MINUTES. I STARTED THE CAR UP AND WAS ABLE TO MAKE IT HOME. I AM THANKFUL THAT THIS HAPPEN ON CITY STREET AND NOT ON THE HIGHWAY. I PLAN ON CONTACTING MY FORD DEALER TOMORROW.

I HAVE BEEN HAVING TROUBLE OUT OF MY CAR AND DID NOT KNOW WHAT IT WAS. I COULD BE DRIVING AND THE ACCELERATOR WOULDN'T HAVE AN POWER. I NOTICED THAT THE MESSAGE IN MY DASH READ: FAILED SAFE MODE. I WAS IN TRAFFIC WHEN THIS HAPPENED AND I HAD MY CHILDREN IN THE CAR AND I AFRAID,WE WOULD BE REAR ENDED BECAUSE THOUGH,THE CAR WAS STILL ON,I HAD NO POWER TO CONTINUE. I TURNED THE CAR OFF AND BACK ON AND IT CONTINUED TO GO INTO FAIL SAFE MODE,THEN I NOTICED THERE WAS A WRENCH TOOL,ALSO IN THE MESSAGE BOARD. AFTER BEING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD FOR 20 MINUTES,THE CAR FINALLY CRUNK UP,SO I COULD MOVE IT OUT THE ROAD. AS,I CRUNK THE CAR,I DIDN'T HAVE MY FEET ON THE ACCELERATOR BUT I IMMEDIATELY HAD TO PUT MY FEET IN THE BREAK BECAUSE THEY CAR WAS MOUNTING AS IF I WAS PUSHING THE GAS. WHEN I FINALLY GOT READY TO PULL OFF BARELY TOUCHING THE GAS,IT JERKED OFF REALLY FAST,CAUSING ME TO ALMOST LOOSE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. I WAS TERRIFIED! I GOT THE CAR HOME AND CALLED MY MECHANIC. HE TOLD ME TO BRING TO HIM THE NEXT MORNING. I GET UP THE NEXT MORNING TO TAKE IT TO THE MECHANIC AND IT REPEATEDLY WENT INTO FAIL SAFE MODE,WHERE I COULD NOT GO ANYWHERE. I FINALLY GOT IT TO GO AFTER AN HOUR AND IT DID THE SAME,AS I WAS ATTEMPTING TO GET IT TO THE MECHANIC SHOP.THE MECHANIC TESTED IT AND SAID,THE THROTTLE BODY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. I WAS ALSO,TOLD,THAT THERE WAS A RECALL ON THESE SAME CARS FOR THE SAME PROBLEM AS IM EXPERIENCING. I DID SOME RESEARCH MYSELF AND THERE WAS A RECALL ON THESE FORD 500 FOR THROTTLE BODY. IM JUST NOT SURE,WHAT YEAR THEY WERE RECALLED. THE RECALL NUMBER IS 12N03. I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE USED ON 2/21/14 W/31,000+/- MILES, INITIAL ISSUE WAS WITH INSTRUMENT CLUSTER INTERMITTENTLY BLIPPING ON & OFF (SOMETIMES FOR EXTENDED PERIODS). THAT ISSUE WAS FOLLOWED BY A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, WHICH WHEN ANALYZED SHOWED LOW FUEL SENSORS A&B (OCCURRED IN LATE APRIL 2014). UP TO THIS POINT THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVABLE WITH NO IMPACT ON ACTUAL DRIVABILITY. LAST FRIDAY 5/9/14, I WAS AT A LIGHT AND WHEN IT TURNED GREEN I PROCEEDED TO DRIVE OFF, BUT VEHICLE WAS BARLEY MOVING OR RESPONDING TO THROTTLE INPUT, THIS CONTINUED FOR A SHORT DISTANCE & EVENTUALLY BUILT UP TO NORMAL SPEED. IT RECURRED AGAIN AT THE NEXT LIGHT, WITH SAME SYMPTOMS. HI, I HAVE A 2005 FORD FIVE HUNDRED WHILE DRIVING ONE DAY ABOUT A MONTH AGO I HEARD THIS NOISE WHEN I PRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL,I DIDN'T THINK IT TO BE NOTHING, BUT IT FELT LIKE A STUGGLE TO STOP AND THE NOISE GET WORST IT FEELS LIKE THE CABLES OF THE BRAKE LINE ARE TO TIGHT AND EVERTIME I STEP ON THE BRAKES IT MAKES A CREEKING SOUND, A FEW DAY AGO I TOOK THE CAR IN TO HAVE THE NOISE CHECK I FOUND OUT THAT IT WAS THE BRAKE BOOSTER AND MASTER CYLINDER AND WAS TOLD IT WAS NO NEED TO HAVE IT FIX BECAUSE THE NOISE WOULD ONLY COME BACK AND THAT THE ESTIMATED COST TO REPAIR WAS AROUND $1345.99. DURING ANY WET WEATHER, WATER INTRUDES INTO MY DOORS AND BECOMES TRAPPED. WHEN OPENING THE DOORS, THE WATER GUSHES OUT AND YOU CAN HEAR WATER SLOSHING AROUND INSIDE. THERE HAS ALSO BEEN LEAKAGE FROM THE FRONT AND REAR PASSENGER DOORS OF WATER INTO THE INTERIOR OF MY VEHICLE FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE DOORS BEING FILLED WITH WATER. DURING THE COLD WEATHER, THIS WATER THEN FREEZES MY LOCKING MECHANISMS WHEN OPENING AND CLOSING THE DOORS. THERE IS A RECALL FOR THIS EXACT ISSUE WITH MY MODEL, BUT ACCORDING TO FORD MY VIN IS NOT INCLUDED EVEN THOUGH THE ISSUE ALSO AFFECTS MY CAR. THERE HAVE BEEN TIMES WHEN MY DOOR WITH "LOCK" BUT IT IS NOT COMPLETELY CLOSED AND HAS OPENED WHILE MOVING. FORDS ONLY RESOLUTION FOR ME HAS BEEN TO FIX THE ISSUE AT MY COST, AND THEY WILL REIMBURSE ME "IF" MY CAR WOULD BE INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THE CAR HAS BEEN DOING THIS SINCE I FIRST BOUGHT IT USED AND THERE HAS BEEN NO RESOLUTION OTHERWISE BY FORD.

WHEN I TEST DROVE THIS VEHICLE THE RPM FLUCTUATED AND JERKING AS IF IT WAS A MANUAL OPPOSED TO AUTOMATIC AS INCREASING SPEEDS. IT ACTS AS THOUGH IT IS IN NEUTRAL BUT THEN WHEN IT ENGAGES INTO GEAR SUDDEN CHANGES IN SPEED OCCUR CAUSING RAPID ACCELERATION OR DECELERATION. THE PROBLEM GETS WORSE AFTER THE CAR IS UP TO NORMAL OPERATING TEMPERATURE. IT DOESN'T OCCUR AS OFTEN AT COLDER OPERATING TEMPERATURE. THIS PROBLEM MAKES IT DIFFICULT TO GET BACK UP TO SAFE HIGHWAY SPEEDS AFTER HAVING TO STOP FOR TRAFFIC OR RED LIGHTS AS WELL AS HARD TO GET UP TO SPEED TO SAFELY MERGE INTO TRAFFIC FROM AN ON RAMP. 2005 FORD FIVE HUNDRED. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO HARD SHIFTING AND TWO INSTRUMENT PANEL LIGHTS ILLUMINATING. *TGW THE CONSUMER ALSO STATED THE RPM'S WOULD RACE AT TIMES. THE CONSUMER WENT TO HER LOCAL DEALER AND A DIAGNOSTIC'S TEST REVEALED A PROBLEM WITH THE PCV VALVE. THE PCV WAS REPLACED AT A COST OF $ 112.95. HOWEVER, IT DID NOT RESOLVE THE PROBLEM. THE CONSUMER WENT BACK TO THE DEALER FOR A TRANSMISSION DIAGNOSTIC TEST, BUT THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO GIVE A DEFINITIVE ANSWER AS TOW HAT THE PROBLEM WAS. FORD CUSTOMER SERVICE WAS THEN CONTACTED AND THEY INFORMED THE DEALER TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION AT A COST OF $5000. THERE WAS ALSO ANOTHER INTERMITTENT PROBLEM WHERE THE VEHICLE WOULD REV WHILE STOPPED AT A STOP SIGN, OR RED LIGHT ETC. AFTER GETTING OTHER OPINIONS, THE CONSUMER WAS INFORMED, THE PROBLEM WAS NOT WITH THE TRANSMISSION. AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH ONLINE, THE CONSUMER DISCOVERED IT WAS A VERY COMMON OCCURRENCE WITH HER PARTICULAR MAKE, WHICH SEEMED TO BE A MANUFACTURING DEFECT.

I PURCHASED A 2005 FORD 500 IN 2010 FROM FREEWAY FORD IN BLOOMINGTON, MN. BUT ON A HOT DAY (90+) WHEN MOVING FROM A STOPPED POSITION OUT OF A PARKING SPOT OR AROUND A CORNER, WHEN YOU LIGHTLY HAVE THE BRAKE PEDAL DEPRESSED IF YOU TURN THE WHEEL SLIGHTLY (IE BACKING OUT OF A TIGHT PARKING SPACE) THE CAR WILL LUNGE VIOLENTLY AND AGGRESSIVELY IN WHAT EVER DIRECTION YOU ARE TRAVELING, SOMETIMES SO AGGRESSIVELY IT WILL STALL THE VEHICLE OUT AND THEN GO INTO A FAILSAFE MODE. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS AS YOU COULD UNEXPECTEDLY HIT SOMEONE WALKING AROUND THE CAR AT A STOP SIGN OR CROSSWALK. I HAVE ALSO FOUND NUMEROUS OTHER COMPLAINTS ON VARIOUS BLOGS, FORUMS, AND OTHER SITES. TRACK BAR BRACKET ON THE EXIT FROM MY DRIVEWAY TO THE ROAD THE CAR STARTED TO DRIVE ERRATICALLY. AFTER STOPPING THE CAR AND INVESTIGATION I FOUND THAT REAR RIGHT TRACK BAR BRACKET IS COMPLETELY DETACHED FROM THE CAR BODY. IT LOOKS LIKE A COMPLETE STRUCTURE FAILURE. THERE IS A TSB THAT TALKS ABOUT SOME CARS WITH RR NEGATIVE CAMBER, (WHICH MY CAR DOES HAVE), AND ALSO TALKS ABOUT HOW TO MODIFY THE REAR CONTROL ARM TO REMEDY THE PROBLEM. THE DANGER IN THIS DEFECT IS A BLOWOUT OF A TIRE OR TIRES WHILE DRIVING. CAR IS IMMACULATE. I BOUGHT IT NEW AND TAKE GREAT CARE OF IT. ON THE INTERSTATE HEADED TOWARDS DENVER, AFTER ABOUT AN HOUR, WHEN TO ACCELERATE FROM ABOUT 70MPH TO ASCEND UP THE HILLS, THE ENGINE RPMS ACCELERATE, HOWEVER, IT FEELS THAT THE TRANSMISSION IS DISENGAGED (SLIPPING) WITH NO POWER TO THE DRIVETRAIN RESULTING IN A DRASTIC LOSS OF SPEED. I RECENTLY PURCHASED A NEW FORD 500 LIMITED. THIS VEHICLE HAS A PROBLEM THAT I FEEL IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE TO CHILDREN. THE SEAT BELTS IN THE REAR ARE POSITIONED IN SUCH A MANNER AS TO CROSS CHILDREN'S NECKS. THE SEAT BELTS HIT OUR 9 YEAR OLD GRANDDAUGHTER, WHO IS TALL FOR HER AGE, ON HER NECK AND WE ALSO HAVE A 6 YEAR OLD GRANDSON WHO IS VERY TALL AND THE BELT RIDES HIS KNECK EVEN WITH HIM IN A BOSTER SEAT. THIS CAR NEEDS TO BE EQUIPED WITH "COMFORT GUIDES" LIKE THE ONES FOUND IN GM CARS. IT IS NOT SAFE FOR SMALL ADULTS OR CHILDREN WHO NO LONGER NEED CAR SEATS TO RIDE IN THE BACK OF THIS VEHICLE. I BELIEVE THE PROBLEM SHOULD BE RETROFITTED BY FORD AT THEIR EXPENSE.

FORD ALSO WAS CONTACTED ABOUT THE ISSUE AND THEY TOO DID NOT SEEM CONCERNED, HOWEVER BOTH PARTIES ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE TIRES. A COMMON QUESTION OF BOTH WAS, DO I DRIVE ON GRAVEL ROADS. I TOLD THEM I DID NOT, HOWEVER FORD DEALER SAID THAT THERE WAS SHELL AND SMALL GRAVEL ON UNDERSIDE OF CAR. THERE HAVE BEEN ROADS REPLACE IN THE AREA THAT I HAVE DRIVEN ON. BOTTOM LINE. I NOW HAVE CONCERNS ABOUT THE TIRE SAFETY ON MY CAR AND BOTH FORD AND CONTINENTAL WILL REPLACE THEM FOR A COST, BUT BOTH REFUSE TO ACKNOWLEDGE A TIRE "ISSUE" AT THIS TIME. I HAVE A 2005 FORD FIVEHUNDRED THAT IS EQUIPED WITH CONTINENTAL CONTACT TOURING TIRES. ACCORDING TO CONTINENTAL'S WEBSITE, THESE TIRES SHOULD LAST FOR SIXTY THOUSAND MILES. CURRENTLY MY VEHICLE HAS 15,000 MILES ON IT AND TWO OF THE TIRES ARE COMPLETELY WORN OUT. I HAVE BEEN ADVISED BY MY DEALER THAT IT IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE. CONTINENTAL STATES THAT FORD SHOULD WARRANTY THE TIRES. FORD STATES CONTINENTAL SHOULD WARRANTY THE TIRES. TIRES THAT WEAR OUT THIS QUICKLY MUST BE DEFECTIVE. QUIT WORKING DAILY WITHOUT WIGGLING WHOLE LIGHTING SOCKET , TOOK APART NOTICED THAT THE SOCKET HOUSING WAS BRITTLE AND CRACKED WITH BURN MARK ON METAL FEMALE LEAD. TWO TO THREE WEEKS LATER PASSENGER LOW BEAM HEADLIGHT WOULD NOT WORK, WIGGLED PASSENGER SIDE LIGHT, CAME BACK ON. SOMETIMES BOTH LIGHT WOULD GO OUT AT SAME TIME. PROBLEM KEPT OCCURRING THROUGH AUGUST. FOUND THIS HAS OCCURRED ON OTHER FORD FIVE HUNDREDS DUE TO SOCKETS OVERHEATING. CHECKED PASSENGER SOCKET AND COMPARED TO DRIVER SIDE AND BOTH SOCKETS AND LIGHT BULBS LOOK IDENTICAL IN DAMAGE. BURNED/MELTED PLASTIC ON BULB BASE AND CRACKED BURNED SOCKETS. REPLACED BOTH SIDE BULBS AND SOCKETS LAST WEEKEND, BOTH LIGHTS WORKED FOR THREE DAYS BEFORE APPARENTLY FUSED THE SOCKET WITH THE BULB ON THE DRIVER SIDE. GUESSING THE PASSENGER SIDE WILL DO THE SAME WITHIN NEXT MONTH LIKE IT DID BEFORE.

I PURCHASED A USED 2005 FORD 500 LTD AWD IN MAY 2008. I WAS TOLD IT WAS A LEASE TURN IN. THE MILEAGE WAS VERY LOW, UNDER 30,000 MILES. THE FACTORY WARRANTY EXPIRED IN JULY 2008. IN OCTOBER 2008, MY DASH BEGAN MALFUNCTIONING. THE GAUGES WOULD GO COMPLETELY DEAD. I COULD NOT TELL HOW FAST I WAS GOING, HOW MUCH GAS I HAD LEFT OR THE TEMPERATURE OF THE ENGINE. NOTHING ON MY DASH WOULD WORK. IT VARIED FROM LASTING SECONDS TO APPX A HALF AN HOUR. I DROVE HOME ONE NIGHT (IT TOOK ME APPX 25 MINUTES) NOT KNOWING HOW FAST I WAS GOING OR HOW MUCH GAS I HAD LEFT. ALSO, THE REVERSE LIGHTS WERE ON WHEN MY CAR WAS IN BOTH DRIVE AND PARK. I STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT (MY CAR WAS IN DRIVE) AND THE REVERSE SENSOR ALARM WENT OFF WHEN A CAR PULLED UP BEHIND ME. I FEEL THAT NOT BEING ABLE TO KNOW WHAT SPEED YOU ARE DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY TO BE A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE. ALSO HAVING YOUR REVERSE LIGHTS ON WHILE THE CAR IS IN PARK OR DRIVE SEEMS A BIT DANGEROUS AS WELL. WE HAD IT REPAIRED AND IT COST US OVER 400.00. ON THE TWO OCCASIONS THAT WE HAD SNOW THIS PAST WINTER, MY FORD 500 BEGAN TO SURGE UNCONTROLLABLY AND THE ENGINE FAILURE LIGHT CAME ON WHEN ACCELERATING. VEHICLE WAS RETURNED TO THE FORD DEALER THAT PERFORMED THE SERVICE AND THEY DETERMINED THAT THE ELECTRIC THROTTLE CONTROL WAS AT FAULT BUT WAS NOT ASSOCIATED WITH THE SERVICE THEY PERFORMED ON THE SAME COMPONENT JUST WEEKS EARLIER. WE WERE DRIVING DOWN A HIGHWAY AND WENT TO GET BACK TO SPEED AFTER PASSING THROUGH A SPEED ZONE. I NOTICED A DECREASE IN POWER AND LOOKED AT THE INFORMATION SCREEN. I WAS IN HEAVY TRAFFIC AND THE CAR JUST STALLED OUT ON ME WHILE SITTING AT A LIGHT. HAD TO PUT MY HAZARDS ON AND TRY TO RESTART CAR, RESTARTED AND THEN AS SOON AS I PUT IT INTO DRIVE IT STALLED AGAIN. THIS HAPPENED 3-4 TIMES UNTIL I COULD MOVE TO THE NEXT LIGHT AND STOP AND GO THROUGH THE WHOLE PROCESS ALL OVER AGAIN. FINALLY GOT ON THE HIGHWAY AND GOT HOME. THOUGHT IT WAS A FLUKE. HAPPENED A SECOND TIME WHILE PICKING UP CHILDREN FROM DAYCARE. STALLED OUT WHILE AT LOW RPM AND WOULD NOT RESTART. HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED. HAD FUEL FILTER REPLACED. HAPPENED A THIRD TIME AT THE STORE. HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED. TOWED IT TO THE DEALER AND THE DEALER SPENT OVER 6 HOURS TO COME TO THE CONCLUSION THAT THROTTLE BODY NEEDED TO BE CLEANED AND PCM REPROGRAMMED/UPDATED. WITHOUT MUCH CONFIDENCE, THEY RETURNED THE CAR TO ME AND SAID THEY COULD NOT REPLICATE THE PROBLEM. DROVE IT FOR A DAY AND THEN HAD THE SAME PROBLEM IN TRAFFIC WHEN AT LOW RPM, WITH CHILDREN IN CAR AT INTERSECTION CAR STALLED OUT! FINALLY GOT IT STARTED BY HOLDING BRAKE AND PUSHING ON ACCELERATOR WHILE PUTTING IT INTO DRIVE SO THAT IT WOULD NOT STALL OUT. DROVE IT HOME AND HAVE NOT TAKEN IT OUT SINCE. EXPECT THE THROTTLE BODY NEEDS TO BE REPLACED BUT DON'T WANT TO SPEND ANY MORE MONEY ON "DIAGNOSTICS" WHEN FORD KNOWS THIS IS A PROBLEM PART AND THEY NEED TO STAND BEHIND IT!!!!! TOOK CAR TO DEALERSHIP, THEY RAN DIAGNOSTICS, CHARGED ME $100, AND TOLD ME THAT MY CAR WASN'T EFFECTED BECAUSE NO ERROR CODES WERE NOTED AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WASN'T ON. NOW IN OCTOBER 2012, THE SECOND TRANSMISSION AS THE SERVICE MEMBER SAID AT THE FORD DEALERSHIP "THE TRANSMISSION EXPLODED, WE'RE NOT EVEN SURE HOW YOU WERE ABLE TO DRIVE THIS VEHICLE. THIS WAS AT ~146,000 MILES, BUT THERE IS ONLY ~48,000 MILES ON THE TRANSMISSION ITSELF. TWO TRANSMISSIONS HAVE FAILED IN THIS VEHICLE. SEARCHING THE INTERNET I HAVE COME ACROSS SEVERAL INSTANCES OF THE FORD FIVE HUNDREDS CONTINUOUSLY VARIABLE TRANSMISSION FAILING. I CALLED THE FORD CARE LINE TO REPORT IT, BUT THEY CLAIM THEY ARE UNAWARE OF ANY ISSUES. MY CONCERN IS THIS THIRD TRANSMISSION WILL ALSO FAIL AT SOME POINT. *TR

AT LOW SPEEDS, WHEN TURNING AND WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A STOP, THE CAR WILL SHAKE, LUNGE AND THEN SHUT OFF. SOMETIMES IT JUST SHAKES AND HESITATES AND THEN KEEPS GOING. SOMETIMES IT TAKES A WHILE TO GET IT RUNNING AGAIN. IT ALWAYS HAPPENS WHEN THE CAR IS IN MOTION. A COUPLE OF TIMES THIS HAPPENED, THE TRANSMISSION ERROR CODES WERE DISPLAYED. I HAVE HAD THE TRANSMISSION CHECKED OUT AND IT WAS FINE.

THE VEHICLE HAS RPM SURGES AT LOW SPEEDS EITHER IN REVERSE OR FORWARD. I NEARLY HAD 3-4 ACCIDENTS IN 2 DAYS BECAUSE OF THE ISSUE. AS I WAS SLOWING TO TURN OFF OF A STATE HIGHWAY, MY CAR SHUT OFF AND DISPLAYED A MESSAGE THAT SAID "FAILSAFE ENGINE MODE." I WAS SOMEWHAT ABLE TO STEER, SO I COMPLETED MY TURN ONTO A SIDE STREET, WHERE THE CAR DRIFTED TO A STOP. I WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE CAR AND DRIVE HOME. THE NEXT MORNING, THE CAR WOULD START BUT IMMEDIATELY SHUT OFF, DISPLAYING THE SAME ERROR MESSAGE. I HAD IT TOWED TO A GARAGE, WHICH INDICATED THAT THE DIAGNOSTIC TEST REVEALED A FAILED ELECTRONIC THROTTLE BODY. THEY ORDERED A REPLACEMENT PART, WHICH WAS THEN INSTALLED. INCIDENTALLY, THE PART HAD SINCE BEEN REDESIGNED BY FORD. ONCE THAT PART WAS REINSTALLED, THE COMPUTER WAS REFLASHED TO "LEARN" THAT A NEW THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY WAS INSTALLED. THE COMPUTER WOULD NOT LEARN THE NEW PART, THOUGH, SO A NEW COMPUTER HAD TO BE ORDERED AND INSTALLED. OVER THE LAST FIVE YEARS, THIS SAME PROBLEM (SHUTTING OFF WHILE DRIVING) HAD OCCURRED, BUT IN EACH CASE I WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE CAR WITHOUT ANY FURTHER PROBLEM. THIS WAS DANGEROUS IN THAT MY CAR SIMPLY SHUT OFF WHILE I WAS DRIVING,MAKING A LEFT TURN ACROSS ONCOMING TRAFFIC. FORTUNATELY NOBODY WAS COMING THE OTHER DIRECTION, SO I WAS ABLE TO SAFELY DRIFT THROUGH THE ONCOMING LANE TO ANOTHER SIDE STREET. ALSO, IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT WHILE MY CAR WAS AT THE DEALERSHIP HAVING THE THROTTLE BODY REPLACED, I WAS TOLD THAT THERE WERE APPROXIMATELY FIVE OTHER FORD FIVE HUNDRED VEHICLES IN THE SHOP AT THE SAME TIME FOR THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THEIR ELECTRONIC THROTTLES AS WELL.

I have 2 very serious and dangerous issues. The 1st issue, the car will shut off while driving and without warning. I'll be cruzing down the highway and out of no where it shuts off. I then do not have breaks or power stearing. This last Winter my daughter was driving it and it shut off while she was on black ice. The car flew into the ditch and the snow was so deep it was compacted in the entire engine so it was impossible to restart the car. It was akso -37 below temperature. It took me almost a half hour to get to her and she almost froze to death. She sustained frost bite on her hands, toes, ears, and cheeks. She almost died. Issue 2, my daughter was driving and all of the sudden a loud noise and she couldn't steer. The rear control arm bracket that is part of the subframe busted causing the control arm to no longer be attached to the frame. She almost flipped the car when that happened. I looked into it and many cars this year make and model had the exact same thing happen in the exact same spot. So that tells me that it is a manufacturer defect. I had this looked at and inspected by Trusted Tires & Auto. Neither of these issues had any warning at all. So now the car sits unable to be driven. Even if it was fixed I won't drive it or let my daughter drive it and I can't sell it because I don't want anyone else to drive it period. It is a death trap literally and puts everyone's life in dangernear that come near the car. It needs to be recalled immediately. This is absolutely unacceptable and Ford needs to stand behind their product. If this car continues to stay on the roads Many people will die because of all the defects on the car.

While driving the front end suspension slips, bounces up and down very harshly, tires slip, squeak, and slide in an hard to control way, sometimes into oncoming traffic when in slightly damp conditions an on roads with any amount of bumps, to the point that I need to drive extremely slow to avoid danger which in turn puts my and my passengers and my kids in danger by goin to slow in regards to the traffic around us. When hitting relatively small bumps the suspension bounces the car severely up and down and across the road into harms way.

IT WAS A VERY HOT DAY AND THE AC WAS RUNNING. NO OTHER VEHICLES WERE OCCUPIED OTHER THAN MINE, AND I WAS SOLE OCCUPANT. MY AIRBAG DID NOT DEPLOY AND PASSENGER'S WAS NOT TURNED ON. THIS HAS HAPPENED MULTIPLE TIMES (MEANING MORE THAN 5 TIMES) DURING THE SUMMER OF 2011. DRIVING ON HIGHWAY AT POSTED SPEED LIMITS AND CAR SUDDENLY LURCHES THEN DROPS INTO FAILSAFE MODE (AS INDENTIFIED BY ALERT POSTED ON THE DASH). PULL OVER, READ OWNER'S MANUAL. FOLLOW DIRECTIONS HOW TO CLEAR FAILSAFE AND IMPLEMENT THEM. A FEW TIMES IT WORKED FOR SHORT PERIODS OF TIME. OTHER TIMES, IT WOULD NOT WORK AT ALL. TWICE THE CAR WAS RUNNING AT APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH AND SUDDENLY GO INTO FAILSAFE MODE THEN STALL OUT. ESPECIALLY DURING STREET/CITY DRIVING, CAR SUDDENLY KICKS FORWARD THEN FAILSAFE AND WILL SOMETIMES STALL OUT IN MIDDLE OF STREET. UNABLE TO RESTART. LAST TIME THIS OCCURRED CAR REQUIRED TOWING TO LOCAL FORD DEALER. INITIALLY SAID IT WAS THE THROTTLE SENOR FOR A COST OF $300. WHEN I OK'D THAT REPAIR, THE DEALERSHIP CALLED BACK LATER AND STATED IT WAS THE ENTIRE THROTTLE BODY AND REPAIR WOULD COME AT A COST OF $1000. THE CAR NOW SITS IN MY DRIVEWAY WHERE IT WAS TOWED TO AND SITS FOR SAFETY REASONS. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 FORD FIVE HUNDRED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE HARNESS FOR THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE HEADLIGHT HAD TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE IT MELTED. AN AUTHORIZED DEALER STATED THAT THE FAILURE MAY HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY EXCESS MOISTURE, BUT THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE HEADLIGHT BECAME BRITTLE AND FRACTURED. THE DEALER ALSO STATED THAT THE TOP MOTOR MOUNT HAD WORN. THE CONTACT FELT THAT THESE WERE MANUFACTURERS DEFECTS. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 70,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 89,700.

DEFECTIVE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE BODY (ETB) ON 2005 FORD 500, FREESTYLE, AND MERCURY MONTEGO. CAUSES CAR TO MOVE FORWARD OR BACKWARD IN DRIVE OR REVERSE WITHOUT USING ANY PRESSURE ON THE GAS PEDAL. MUST PLACE FOOT ON THE BRAKE TO AVOID RUNNING INTO SOMETHING, ESPECIALLY WHILE PARKING. FORD HAS A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN (TSB 05-25-13) ON THIS BUT HAS NOT NOTIFIED ANY OWNERS OF VEHICLES AFFECTED TO DATE. IT APPEARS THAT FORD HAS COME UP WITH A NEW REPLACEMENT PART FOR THE ETB UNLIKE THE ORIGINAL THAT WAS JUST MADE AVAILABLE IN JULY 2010. I PAID A LOCAL FORD DEALER $128.08 TO HAVE THIS PROBLEM DIAGNOSED AND ANOTHER $615.83 TO HAVE IT FIXED. I WAS TOLD THE ETB PART NUMBER WAS "5F9Z-9E926-AA". ANOTHER NUMBER FOR THE NEW ETB PART ON MY SALES SLIP DATED 07/30/10 WAS FMC 6F9Z 9E926 A. THEY CALLED IT A KIT FOR THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE BODY. THE PRICE FOR THE KIT WAS $495.86. SINCE I HAVE HEARD OF THIS PROBLEM COMING UP ON MORE THAN ONE OCCASION, I THOUGHT I WOULD TURN IT IN FOR YOUR INVESTIGATION. SINCE THE AFFECT OF THE DEFECTIVE ETB ACTUALLY CAN CAUSE THE CAR TO MOVE ON ITS OWN, FORWARD OR REVERSE, AND REQUIRES YOU TO USE YOUR BRAKES SIMULTANEOUSLY TO KEEP IT FROM HITTING ADJOINING OBJECTS, I THOUGHT THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD THAT SHOULD BE ADDRESSED ON SEVERAL FORD AND MERCURY 2005 PRODUCTS, IT IS NOT THE MONEY, IT IS THE SAFETY ISSUE I AM MOST INTERESTED IN. TO PARALLEL PARK OR GET INTO A PARKING STALL WITH THIS PROBLEM WAS A REAL CHORE KEEPING YOU FOOT ON THE BRAKE AS YOU TRIED TO MANEUVER IN AND OUT OF A PARKING SPACE. IF YOU DID NOT HOLD YOUR FOOT ON THE BRAKE, THE CAR WOULD MOVE IN ITS OWN EITHER IN DRIVE OR REVERSE. THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE AND A TRUE SAFETY HAZARD, BUT I HAVE NOT SEEN THE PROBLEM ON THE RECALL LISTS FOR MY CAR OR OTHERS AFFECTED IN THE FORD TSB. AROUND 102, 000 MILES, DURING A SNOW STORM, I WAS DRIVING MY 2005 FORD FIVE HUNDRED AWD LIMITED ON A MAIN ROAD. AS I WAS DRIVING, THE CAR SEEMED TO "LURCH". I REACTED BY REMOVING MY FOOT FROM THE GAS, IN FEAR THE CAR WAS SLIDING ON ICE, AND THE WRENCH ILLUMINATED ON MY DASH, AS IT DISPLAYED "FAILSAFE ENGINE MODE". THE CAR CONTINUED TO DRIVE, AND THE ENGINE WAS STILL RUNNING. HOWEVER, IT WAS NOT HANDLING VERY SMOOTHLY. I PULLED OVER AND TURNED THE VEHICLE OFF. I WAITED TEN SECONDS AND STARTED THE CAR. EVERYTHING WAS FINE. I BEGAN TO DRIVE ON THE ROAD AGAIN, AND THE SITUATION REPEATED. THE CAR SEEMED TO SHIFT VERY HARD, AND THE WRENCH ILLUMINATED AND "FAILSAFE ENGINE MODE" WAS DISPLAYED. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ALSO ILLUMINATED. I PULLED OVER AND TURNED THE CAR OFF AGAIN. ONCE I TURNED IT BACK ON, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS STILL ON. TWO DAYS LATER, I DISCONNECTED THE BATTERY AND WHEN THE CAR WAS RECONNECTED, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT HAD TURNED OFF. ATLEAST ONE MONTH PASSED WITH NO PROBLEMS OR RE-OCCURRENCES. HOWEVER, THIS MORNING, THERE WAS ANOTHER SNOW STORM. WHILE I WAS DRIVING, THE CAR LURCHED AGAIN, THE "FAILSAFE ENGINE MODE" DISPLAYED, AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON AGAIN. BOTH OCCURRENCES HAVE BEEN FOLLOWED BY THE INABILITY OF MY CAR TO DRIVE WELL IN THE SNOW. BOTH TIMES MY CAR HAS FISHTAILED HORRIBLY, AND BEEN DIFFICULT TO MAINTAIN. I PURCHASED A 2005 FORD 500 4-DOOR SEDAN 2-1/2 YEARS AGO FROM A FORD DEALERSHIP. IT WAS DESCRIBED AS A "PROGRAM" CAR. I SOON NOTICED THAT THE DASHBOARD DISPLAY LIGHTS WOULD NOT LIGHT UP DURING DAYLIGHT HOURS, EVEN THOUGH THE RHEOSTAT WAS SET ON MAXIMUM BRILLIANCE. I PROVED THIS BY DRIVING INTO A DARK PARKING GARAGE AND SAW THAT THE SAID LIGHTS TURNED ON AT MAXIMUM. I ASKED THE SERVICE MANAGER ABOUT THIS AND HE SAID FORD HAD WIRED THE LIGHTS THROUGH THE SOLAR SWITCH VIA THE ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT AND COULD NOT BE CHANGED. WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED SHE OPENED THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE DOOR AND NOTICED WATER LEAKING FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE DOOR PANEL. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT EXAMINED FOR THE CAUSE OF FAILURE BUT SHE INSTALLED WINDOW RAIN GUARDS ON ALL FOUR WINDOWS. THE FAILURE CONTINUED TO OCCUR. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH SHE COULD FEEL THE VEHICLE SHAKING IN THE STEERING WHEEL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE THE OEM MOTOR MOUNT AND BRACKET WERE REPLACED. THE FAILURE HAD NOT RECURRED. SHE ALSO STATED THAT WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED SHE TURNED ON THE AIR CONDITIONER BUT THERE WAS ONLY MINOR AIR FLOW COMING THROUGH THE VENTS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE A NEW COMPRESSOR AND EXPANSION VALVE WERE INSTALLED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 80,000. I HAVE A FORD FIVE HUNDRED LIMITED. THE CAR HAS STOP RUNNING WHILE THE CAR IS IN GEAR AND MOVING. IT ALSO STOPPED WHEN I STARTED TO DRIVE FROM A STOP LIGHT. WHILE IT WAS BEING FIXED AT THE CAR DEALERSHIP IT STOP (DIED) ON THEM SEVERAL TIMES. THE FORD DEALER COMPANY THOUGHT IT WAS THE POWER STEERING PUMP BECAUSE THE POWER STEERING PUMP WAS MAKING A KNOCKING SOUND. THEY ALSO NOTICED THAT IF THEY WAS TO TURN THE WHEEL IT WOULD USUALLY DIE ON THEM. THE DEALERSHIP HAS REPLACED THE BATTERY, POWERSTEERING PUMP, BELT AND THE THROTTLE AND THE CAR STILL DIES. MY UNDERSTANDING FROM THEM IS THAT THEY HAVE NEVER COME ACROSS THIS PROBLEM BEFORE. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 FORD FIVE HUNDRED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAG OFF LIGHT WAS ILLUMINATED. THE DEALER SEEMED TO IGNORE THE ISSUE AND STATED THAT IT WAS MINIMAL. TL*THE CONTACT'S CLIENT OWNS A 2005 FORD FIVE HUNDRED. WHILE THE CLIENT WAS DRIVING 35 MPH, SHE REMOVED HER FOOT FROM THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL; HOWEVER, THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE. SHE ATTEMPTED TO APPLY THE BRAKES, BUT THE SPEED CONTINUED TO INCREASE. THE CLIENT ALSO APPLIED THE EMERGENCY BRAKE AND ENCOUNTERED A PICKUP TRUCK TRAVELING IN THE SAME DIRECTION. SHE CROSSED OVER THE DOUBLE-YELLOW LINE ON A 2-LANE ROAD AND PASSED THE PICKUP TRUCK. THE DRIVER OF THE PICKUP INFORMED POLICE THAT HE NOTICED BRAKES BEING APPLIED, SMELLED, AND SAW BLUE SMOKE COMING FROM THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE CONTINUED ACCELERATING. THE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED. THE CLIENT THEN SIDE SWIPED A GUARDRAIL FOR APPROXIMATELY 40 FEET. THE FRONT TIRE BLEW OUT AND THE VEHICLE WAS PUSHED ACROSS THE ROADWAY. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. TWO PASSENGERS SUSTAINED INJURIES. THE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE STRUCK AN EMBANKMENT ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE VEHICLE BECAME AIRBORNE FOR APPROXIMATELY 70 FEET AND LANDED ON ITS SIDE. AT THAT TIME, ONLY THE DRIVER'S SIDE AIR BAG DEPLOYED. THE VEHICLE ROLLED OVER TWICE AND LANDED AT A RECENTLY PLANTED FLOWER BED. THE DRIVER SEAT BELT DISENGAGED AS WELL. 2005 FORE FIVE HUNDRED- THE FOLLOWING PROBLEMS HAVE OCCURRED; 1)FOUR TIMES THE CHECK TRANSMISSION LIGHT HAS COME ON , AND CAR THEN WAS UNABLE TO DRIVE FASTER THAN 40 MPH. EACH TIME CAR WAS BROUGHT TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR REPAIRS, INCLUDING REPLACING MODULES AND THE TRANS AXLE PAN. BRAND NEW 2005 FORD 500 PURCHASED ON SEPTEMBER 24 2005 BEGAN AT 15000 MILES WITH BRAKE PROBLEMS. SAME PROBLEM OCCURRED AT 30,000 MILES. MY JOB IS 100% SALES AND MY CAR IS MY ONLY REVENUE PROVIDER. AT 35,000 CAR SHOWING PROBLEMS WHEN HITTING THE GAS, IT WOULD NOT RUN. AT 39,000 MILES AN ELECTRIC SHORT CIRCUIT. AT 39,000 I ASKED THE DEALER TO RECHECK THE WHOLE CAR THAT IT WAS SHOWING TRANSMISSION AND BRAKE PROBLEMS. AT 43,000 MILES NOW IS SITTING IN THE FORD DEALER WHERE I PURCHASED AT SINCE LAST FRIDAY SEPT 22,2006. THE FORD DEALER MECHANICAL DIRECTOR WAS INSIDE THE CAR AND ME TEST DRIVING IT, AND COULD NOT BELIEVE THE PROBLEMS WITH THE TRANSMISSION. HIS WORDS WERE' IF THIS WAS MY CAR I WOULD NOT BE SITTING IN IT, IT'S A RISK TO ANYONE'S LIFE" TODAY, FORD INFORMED ME THAT THEY HAVE TO BRING THE TRANSMISSION DOWN AND OPEN IT. DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THE FUEL GAUGE WAS STICKING INTERMITTENTLY AND WOULD NOT INDICATE THE PROPER AMOUNT OF FUEL IN THE TANK. EVENTUALLY THE GAUGE WOULD NOT OPERATE AT ALL. THE DEALERSHIP DETERMINED THE PROBLEM WAS WITH THE FUEL QUALITY AND ADDED FUEL ENHANCERS TO THE FUEL TANK. CURRENTLY THE FUEL GAUGE HAS BEEN WORKING PROPERLY. THE CONTACT MAINTAINED IF THERE WAS ACTUALLY A PROBLEM WITH FUEL QUALITY THE PROPER AUTHORITIES SHOULD BE NOTIFIED. STARTING IN DECEMBER WE HAVE HAD NUMEROUS STARTING PROBLEMS WITH THIS CAR. WE HAVE HAD IT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP FIVE TIMES FOR THIS PROBLEM AND THREE OTHER TIMES FOR OTHER WARRANTY PROBLEMS. WHEN YOU GO TO START THE CAR IS TURNS OVER BUT WILL NOT START OR IT WILL START THEN DIE. WHEN IT ACTED UP WE ALSO HAD A LOSS OF POWER ONCE IT WOULD START THE SECOND TIME IT WENT TO DEALER FOR THE PROBLEM WE COULD NOT GET IT STATED AT ALL AND IT HAD TO BE TOWED. AFTER THE LAST REPAIR IT NOW IS GETTING ONLY ABOUT 19 MILES TO THE GALLON IN COMBINED DRIVING. WE HAVE ASKED FORD TO BUY THE VEHICLE BACK AND THREE TIMES WE WERE TOLD A FORD REGIONAL REP WOULD CALL US BACK TO WORK WITH US AND THEY NEVER WOULD CALL US BACK. WE ARE CURRENTLY TRYING TO HAVE FORD BUY THE VEHICLE BACK OR REPLACE IT THROUGH THE BBB DISPUTE REPLACEMENT BUT THEY WILL NOT. WE HAVE ALSO HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE DOORS AND MOLDINGS NOT BEING ALIGNED CORRECTLY AND THIS CAUSED DAMAGE WHEN THE REAR DOOR OPENED AND DAMAGED THE DOORS. OMERA FORD DIAGNOSED BRAKE AND TRANSMISSION PROGRAMMING PROBLEMS AND ONCE AGAIN TURNED DOWN REAR ROTORS TO VERY CLOSE TO MINIMUM SPECIFICATIONS. CONSUMER REPORT JAN 2005 REPORTS SIMILAR ISSUES WITH BRAKING, AUTO-WEEK MAY-16-2005 REPORTS BRAKE FADE AND STABILITY PROBLEMS IN THEIR TEST TRACK REPORT. THIS IS A FIRST MODEL YEAR CAR FOR FORD WHICH IS BASED OFF OF A MODIFIED VOLVO DESIGN OF UNDER-CARRIAGE. THE VEHICLE IS NOW PARKED WITH AN AFFIDAVIT OF NON USE ON IT BECAUSE OF THE NUMBER OF INCIDENTS AND REPAIRS THAT HAVE OCCURRED ON REAR SUSPENSION AND BRAKES. FORD AT ARBITRATION MAINTAINED THAT IN LATE JULY THERE WERE MORE TSB'S ISSUED FOR THE 2005 FORD 500, BUT I AM UNABLE TO FIND SAME ON NHTSA WEBSITE.
