MY 2005 GMC CANYON CONTINUES TO HAVE ISSUES WITH THE PASSLOCK II SYSTEM. NO MODIFICATIONS HAVE BEEN MADE TO THE IGNITION SWITCH, KEYS, OR ANY OTHER ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. THE PASSLOCK PREVENTS ME FROM STARTING MY TRUCK BECAUSE FOR SOME REASON THE COMPUTER THINKS IT IS TRYING TO BE STOLEN. THE LAST TIME THIS ISSUE OCCURED, MY TRUCK WAS PARKED IN MY GARAGE. WHEN ATTEMPTED TO START, THE TRUCK CRANKED BUT DID NOT START AND THE PASSLOCK LIGHT CAME ON. I HAD TO SIT AND WAIT FOR 10 MINUTES UNTIL THE LIGHT WENT OFF. THE PROBLEM WAS I WAS TRYING TO DRIVE MYSELF TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM BECAUSE I HAD JUST BEEN BITTEN BY A DOG.

AIR CONDITIONING STOPPED WORKING ON FAN POSITIONS 1,2, AND 3 AND WORKS ONLY ON 4. EIGHT PAGES OF COMPLAINTS INDICATED THAT FAULTY COMPONENTS WERE PUT INTO TRUCK AT FACTORY AND SHOULD BE RECALLED: BLOWER MOTOR RESISTOR, WIRING HARNESS AND POOR GROUND WIRE. AC DELCO PART 15-80521 ONE PART REQUIRING REPLACEMENT.

I REPLACED THE FUEL FILTER ON MY 2005 GMC CANYON AS PART OF REGULAR MAINTENANCE. IN ORDER TO PERFORM THE FUEL FILTER REPLACEMENT I DISCONNECTED THE NEGATIVE TERMINAL OF THE BATTERY. AFTER MAINTENANCE, THE BATTERY WAS HOOKED UP. VEHICLE NOW EXHIBITS THE FOLLOWING SYMPTOMS. 1) DRIVERS SIDE WINDOW INOPERABLE. 2) POWER DOOR LOCKS INOPERABLE FROM DIVERS SIDE MASTER SWITCH. 3) VEHICLE DOES NOT AUTOMATICALLY LOCK DOORS WHEN SHIFTED FROM P TO R OR D. 4) KEYLESS ENTRY INOPERABLE. THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME THIS CONDITION HAS PRESENTED ITSELF AFTER UNHOOKING THE BATTERY. POSSIBLE SAFETY CONCERN OVER INOPERABLE WINDOW AND DOOR LOCKS. I RECENTLY RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE FOR A 2006 GMC CONVOY THAT I OWNED FOR A POSSIBLE DEFECTIVE DOOR MODULE THAT MAY CAUSE A SHORT THAT WOULD CAUSE SMOKE OR A FIRE. I AM HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM WITH MY 2005 GMC CANYON PICK UP. THIS SUMMER (2014) MY DRIVER POWER WINDOW AND POWER LOCKS STOPPED WORKING. AFTER A COUPLE OF DAYS BEFORE I COULD GET AN APPOINTMENT TO GET THEM FIXED, THEY STARTED WORKING PROPERLY. ON 21 NOV 14, THE ISSUE RECURRED, MY DRIVER POWER WINDOW, AND POWER LOCKS STOPPED WORKING AGAIN. I RECEIVED A LETTER FROM GM STATING THE IDENTICAL PROBLEM FOR A 2006 GMC ENVOY THAT I USED TO OWN. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 GMC CANYON. THE CONTACT STATED THAT SHE SAW SMOKE COMING FROM THE VENTS OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT TOO STRONG OF AN ELECTRICAL CURRENT WAS FLOWING INTO THE ENGINE. AS A RESULT, THE CONTACT WAS ADVISED TO REPLACE THE MOTOR. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE WAS REPAIRED BY AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 123,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 124,000.

HE RECEIVED A NOTICE FROM THE MANUFACTURER, WHICH STATED THAT THEY WOULD EXTEND HIS WARRANTY DUE TO THE MALFUNCTION. HOWEVER, ONCE THE WARRANTY EXPIRED, THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE DEALER COULD NOT DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE AND MAKE ADDITIONAL REPAIRS. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS LESS THAN 1,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 21,000.

RECENTLY PURCHASED USED 2005 GMC CANYON, TWO DAYS AFTER PURCHASE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND STAYED, THE TRUCK DID NOT RUN ROUGH OR MAKE NOISES. TOOK DIRECTLY BACK TO DEALERSHIP, IT WAS DETERMINED THE OXYGEN SENSOR WAS BAD. REPLACED. FIVE DAYS LATER THE SAME THING HAPPENED...DIAGNOSTICS DETERMINED CATALYTIC CONVERTER, OXYGEN SENSOR AND EXHAUST INTAKE WERE ALL RELATED. The frames on many of these trucks are unsafe to be on the road due to rusted leaf spring mounts and frame rails that are rotting away and unable to lift on a hoist. Luckily I came across a video warning me to watch out for a rusted frame or else I could have lost control while driving. Yes, I work at a gm dealership and see this issue often, they are very similar to the Toyota trucks that had rusted frames replaced under recall. No it has not been inspected but they're is no way that it would pass an annual inspection, therefore the truck is rendered useless. There were no warnings that the frame was almost rotted in half. Very dangerous situation.

NEARLY TOTAL FRAME FAILURE DUE TO POOR STEEL AND EXTREME RUST AND CORROSION OF ENTIRE FRAME. WITH THIS MODEL YEAR OF GMC AND CHEVROLET TRUCKS, THERE ARE A LOT OF REPORTS OF FRAME FAILURES. MY PARTICULAR TRUCK IS SO BADLY RUSTED THAT THE CAB AND BODY COULD POSSIBLY SEPARATE DUE TO FRAME FAILURE. THIS IS REGARDING CONTINUED ISSUES WITH NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID 06V139000 AND NHTSA ACTION NUMBER: PE05065 AND THE FAULTY BRAKE LAMP SWITCH ON THIS VEHICLE. THE BRAKE LAMP SWITCH ORIGINALLY FAILED AROUND 2005 AND WAS REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY. IT FAILED AGAIN AROUND 2006 AND WAS REPLACED VIA RECALL. THIS SWITCH FAILED A 3RD TIME IN OCTOBER OF 2008 AND THE DEALER WOULD NOT FIX UNDER WARRANTY AS THEY CLAIMED IT HAD ALREADY BEEN DONE SO I PAID OUT OF POCKET FOR THE REPAIR. THIS SAME BRAKE SWITCH LAMP FAILED AGAIN ON 05/26/2009 AFTER LESS THAN 8 MONTHS AND FEWER THAN 8,000 MILES, AGAIN LEAVING ME WITHOUT FUNCTIONING BRAKE LIGHTS. I WILL RETURN TO THE DEALER TO HAVE IT REPLACED AGAIN, BUT THAT IS NOT AN ACCEPTABLE OUTCOME. IT HAS BECOME PAINFULLY OBVIOUS THAT GM HAS FAILED TO FULFILL ITS OBLIGATION TO FIX THIS DANGEROUS SITUATION IN THAT IT NOT ONLY LEAVES ME WITHOUT FUNCTIONING BRAKE LIGHTS MAKING IT VERY DIFFICULT FOR OTHER DRIVERS TO KNOW THAT I AM STOPPING, BUT THERE IS NO WARNING THAT THIS FAILURE HAS OCCURRED! I RISK MY LIFE EVERY TIME I GET BEHIND THE WHEEL OF THIS VEHICLE BECAUSE THE ENGINEERS AT GM SEEM INCAPABLE OF PERFECTING A $5 SWITCH THAT IS PART OF AN AUTOMOTIVE TECHNOLOGY THAT HAS BEEN IN EXISTENCE FOR NEARLY 100 YEARS (BRAKE LIGHTS). VISOR LOOSENS AND DROPS TO COVER VISUAL FIELD IN FRONT OF DRIVER; VISOR FALLS OFF WHILE VEHICLE IN OPERATION CREATING HAZARD BY LANDING ON STEERING WHEEL, ARM, FACE OF DRIVER. I HAVE OWNED 3 GM VEHICLES WITH THE SAME PART THAT FAILS IN THE SAME WAY. PRESENT VEHICLE: PART WAS REPLACED AND THE NEW VISOR FAILED IN THE SAME WAY. GM REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE THIS AS A REPEAT PROBLEM OF THE SAME PART, BUT IT IS. I AM ORIGINAL OWNER ON 2 AND SECOND OWNER ON THE THIRD OF THESE VEHICLES. I OWN A 2005 GMC CANYON. THREE WEEKS OUT OF WARRANTY THE ABS SYSTEM BEGAN TO MALFUNCTION. THE ABS WOULD KICK IN FOR NO REASON. BECAUSE IT WAS ACCORDING TO GM OUT OPF THE GUARANTEE PERIOD THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO FOR ME. MY PRIVATE GARAGE TOLD ME THAT THIS WAS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE CANYON AND USED A WORK AROUND TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM BY DISABLING THE ABS SYSTEM BECAUSE OF THE HIGH COST OF REPLACING THE SENSORS WITCH WOULD PROBABLY BE DAMAGED AGAIN WHEN REPLACING THE BRAKE PADS. *TR

2005 GMC CANYON, 4WD. BRAKES LOCK UP AFTER SITTING FOR A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME OR WHEN WET. ABS DOES ACTIVATE, HEAR THE NOISE, REAR BRAKES LOCK. WENT TO SOME OF THE FORUMS FOR THESE VEHICLES, FIND OUT IT IS COMMON. TOOK VEHICLE BACK TO DEALER (BOUGHT IT USED AS CERTIFIED GM) AS THE PARKING BRAKE STUCK ONLY A WEEK AFTER I HAD THE VEHICLE. THEY REPLACED THE CABLE, TOLD ME I WAS SET. I TOOK THE TRUCK HOME, BRAKES WERE VERY "TOUCHY" BROUGHT IT BACK TO THE DEALER A FEW WEEKS LATER (THOUGHT MAYBE IT WAS ME) AND THEY CHARGED ME $100.00 AND SAID THEY ADJUSTED THE REAR BRAKES, NOT UNDER THE WARRANTY. I CALLED THEM AND HAD A BLOW OUT ARGUMENT WITH THE SERVICE MANAGER TO NO AVAIL AS THE BRAKES WERE STILL TOUCHY. I HAVE A 2005 GMC CANYON 4WD CC P/U . THIS P/U WAS PURCHASED NEW IN MAY 2005. THE WINDOW STICKER CLEARLY LISTS AN AUTO LOCKING DIFFERENTIAL UNDER STANDARD EQUIPMENT. IN NOVEMBER 2005 GMC SENT A LETTER TO ME WHICH STATED THAT THIS VEHICLE DOES NOT HAVE A AUTO LOCKING DIFFERENTIAL. THE "SPECIAL COVERAGE" EXTENDED THE REPAIR FOR 7 YEARS/100,0000. I HAVE OWNED THE TRUCK FOR 5 YEARS AND DID NOT RECEIVE ANY NOTIFICATION OF THIS PROBLEM. MY FATHER BOUGHT THE VEHICLE NEW AND I INHERITED IT ON HIS PASSING IN 2009. I HAVE 52,000 MILES ON THE OTHERWISE PRISTINE TRUCK. I AM TOLD IT DOESN'T MATTER THAT IT WAS A CLEAR MANUFACTURERS DEFECT OR THAT I WAS NOT NOTIFIED AS THE EXTENSION EXPIRED IN 2013. THE REPAIR IS $3500. I HAD JUST BOUGHT A USED / REPOSESSED 2005 GMC CANYON JANUARY 18, 2006 WITH 9100 APPROX MILES ON IT. MAY THE 3RD 2006 WHILE GOING ON INTERSTATE 20/59 IN BIRMINGHAM ALABAMA APPROX 10:45 AM, THE DRIVER SIDE REAR TIRE SHREDDED ON THE INTERSTATE WHILE I WAS DRIVING 75 MPH IN A 70 ZONE. THERE WAS NOTHING IN THE HIGHWAY STRUCK ON A SUNNY DAY. HOWEVER I MANAGED TO GET THE VEHICLE OFF THE INTERSTATE AND TO A TIRE REPAIR PLACE WHERE UPON INSPECTING THE BLACK RUBBER TORE UP THE REAR BED PANEL AND DAMAGE THE UNDERNEATH TIRE WELD AREA AND THE SUPER STRUCTURE. BODY FRAME HAS ROT HOLES THROUGHOUT UNDERCARRIAGE. NEW FRAME NEEDED. WHILE DRIVING, I WENT OVER A SPEED BUMP AND HEARD A LOUD BOOM FROM UNDERNEATH THE TRUCK. UPON INVESTIGATING, IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE DRIVESHAFT BROKE OFF N WAS LYING ON THE AXEL. AAA WAS CALLED AND IMMEDIATELY TOWED THE TRUCH 1 MILE TO OUR MECHANIC. AFTER A THOROUGH INSPECTION, IT WAS DETERMINED THAT A NEW DRIVESHAFT WAS NEEDED AND UPON FURTHER INSPECTION, THE MECHANIC SPOTTED NUMEROUS PITTING RUSTED HOLES THROUGHOUT THE FRAME. DETERMINED THAT SAID TRUCK WAS A TOTAL LOSS.

MY TRUCK IS EXHIBITING AN ISSUE IN WHICH THE GM PASSLOCK SYSTEM DISABLES THE FUEL AND ENGINE BECAUSE OF SOME MALFUNCTION. THIS SYSTEM IS INTENDED TO DISABLE THE FUEL SYSTEM ON A VEHICLE IF IT DETECTS THAT THE IGNITION HAS BEEN TAMPERED WITH OR IN IMPROPER KEY HAS BEEN USED TO TRY AND START THE VEHICLE. MY ISSUE IS THAT INTERMITTENTLY WHEN I TRY TO START MY TRUCK WITH THE FACTORY KEY, THE PASSLOCK SYSTEM ENGAGES AND DOES NOT ALLOW ME TO START MY TRUCK. I HAVE TO WAIT 10 MINUTES IN ORDER FOR THE PASSLOCK SYSTEM LIGHT TO TURN OFF ON THE DASHBOARD. SOMETIMES MY TRUCK WILL START AFTER THIS 10 MINUTE LOCKOUT PERIOD. IT HAS HAPPENED BEFORE WHERE MY TRUCK WILL FAIL TO START AFTER THE FIRST LOCKOUT PERIOD AND I HAVE TO WAIT ANOTHER 10 MINUTES. ONCE THE PASSLOCK SYSTEM ALLOWS ME TO START THE ENGINE, MY TRUCK RUNS FINE WITH NO ISSUES. IN MY OPINION, THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY CONCERN. IN ANY EMERGENCY SITUATION, I WOULD HOPE TO DEPEND ON MY TRUCK STARTING. THIS MALFUNCTIONING PASSLOCK SYSTEM PREVENTS ME FROM STARTING MY TRUCK. MY GREATEST ISSUE WITH THIS SITUATION IS THAT MY TRUCK IS NOT THE ONLY ONE THAT IS AFFECTED BY THIS. A QUICK GOOGLE SEARCH OF "GMC CANYON PASSLOCK" WILL SHOW PAGES UPON PAGES OF FORUMS OF OTHER TRUCK OWNERS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. I LIVE IN AN AREA OF THE COUNTRY WITH A HIGH RISK OF FOREST FIRES. I KNOW FRIENDS WHO HAVE BEEN EVACUATED FROM THEIR HOMES IN THE PAST. I HONESTLY BELIEVE THAT THIS MALFUNCTION OF MY TRUCK COULD GREATLY IMPACT MY ABILITY TO EVACUATE IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY.

I GOT A SAFETY BULLETIN FROM GMC #14609 STATING THAT THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH MY AIR BAG LIGHT,. IT CAN GO ON DUE TO WIRES IN THE REAR DOOR BREAKING, THE AIR BAG CAN GO OFF ALSO. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE WITH THE AIR BAGS, I HAVE THE PROBLEM WITH THE AIR BAG LIGHT ON. THEY SAID THEY WOULD FIX IT OR REIMBURSE ME IF I PAID IN THE PAST TO HAVE IT FIXED. WELL THEY SAID I WAS OFF OF WARRANTY 1-15 . THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE, THE DEALER WILL NOT FIX IT FOR FREE. WHY DID THEY SEND ME THIS BULLETIN WITH MY VIN NUMBER ATTACHED? I HAVE HAD NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS WITH THIS GMC TRUCK, YOU NAME IT IT HAS HAD A PROBLEM. MOSTLY ELECTRICAL SYSTEM FAILURE. THE AIR BAG ISSUE SHOULD BE FIXED BY GMC FREE OF CHARGE WHICH THEY STATE IN THE LETTER, THERE TELLING ME I AM A FEW MONTHS PAST THE 10 YEAR DEAD LINE. THAT IS A DISGRACE THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND SHOULD BE COVERED BY GMC IF IT IS A DESIGN PROBLEM LIKE ALL THE OTHER PROBLEMS I AM HAVING. THIS VEHICLE USES A RESISTOR FOR VARIABLE SPEEDS (X4) ON THE VENTILATION BLOWER. DURING CONTINUOUS OR FREQUENT USE (I.E. DEFROST, AIR CONDITIONING) A BURNING SMELL DEVELOPS. THE BURNING SMELL INCREASES OVER TIME AFTER REPEATED USAGE AND THE INCREMENTAL BLOWER SPEED CIRCUITS ARE BURNED OUT AND DISABLED. THE WIRES ARE BLACKENED AND CONNECTORS MELTED AND THE PLASTIC CONNECTING BASE OF THE RESISTOR IS MELTED AND BLACKENED. AT TIMES THE VEHICLE WIRE HARNESS IS AFFECTED. GM HAS A "SERVICE BULLETIN" WHICH PRESCRIBES A "REPAIR" FOR THIS MALFUNCTION (I.E. NEW RESISTOR, PIGTAIL WIRES AND CONNECTORS, AND A BLOWER REPLACEMENT IF REQUIRED) ---- BUT IT DOES NOT FIX THE PROBLEM AND IT OCCURS REPEATEDLY THROUGHOUT OWNERSHIP OF THE VEHICLE. WE HAD TO REPLACE THE RESISTOR AND WIRES IN THIS CIRCUIT AT LEAST 6 TIMES IN THE LAST THREE YEARS. OUR CANYON BEGAN EXPERIENCING THIS PROBLEM AT ABOUT 85,000 MILES. EACH REPLACEMENT (INCLUDING LABOR AND PARTS) COSTS ABOUT $150. I CONTACTED GM LAST YEAR -- THEY GAVE ME A CASE NUMBER BUT WANTED ME TO PAY OUT OF POCKET BY THE HOUR FOR ELECTRICAL TROUBLESHOOTING. I ALSO CONTACTED CORPORATE CUSTOMER SERVICE LAST MONTH WHEN THEY WERE ADVERTISING NEW RECALLS BASED ON SERVICE BULLETINS --- BUT THEY WERE NOT INTERESTED UNLESS AN OPEN FLAME WAS PRESENT IN THE SITUATION. WE EVENTUALLY BYPASSED THIS CIRCUIT BY INSTALLING CORE WIRE, A ONE-WAY SWITCH, AND A FUSE. AT THE VERY LEAST, THIS IS A DISTRACTION. AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE, THE CONTACT ASKED IF THE VEHICLE HAD POST-TRACTION. THE DEALER STATED THAT IT DID; HOWEVER, THE CONTACT LATER DISCOVERED THAT THE VEHICLE DID NOT HAVE POST-TRACTION. BRAND NEW TRUCK, HAVE OWNED ALMOST 1 YEAR. HAD TO TAKE TRUCK IN FOR SLOW ACCELERATION PROBLEM AS WELL AS HARD TO CRANK. MOVING THE FRONT SEAT FORWARD TO ACCOMMODATE THE REAR FOLDING SEAT, COMPRISES THE DRIVERS POSITION BY MAKING IT EXTREMELY UNCOMFORTABLE AND CRAMPED. CONSEQUENTLY, THE FEATURE DOESN'T WORK. THERE WAS NOTHING IN THE MANUAL STATING THERE WAS AN OPTION TO REMOVE THE HEAD RESTS. THE CONSUMER WAS NOT GETTING THE CORRECT MPG. AT NIGHT, WHEN THE CLOCK AND RADIO DASH LIGHTS ARE ON, THE BLUE/GREEN HORIZONTAL DISPLAY LIGHT REFLECT TO THE REAR WINDOW. THE IMAGE IS THEN REFLECTED INTO THE REAR VIEW MIRROR AS A VERTICAL BLUE/GREEN LINE. *JB

THE "2005 GMC CANYON" PICK-UP AND SIMILAR VEHICLES MADE BY THIS MANUFACTURER LACK KEYED ACCESS LOCKS ON THE PASSENGER-SIDE DOORS. IN THE EVENT OF AN EMERGENCY, BECAUSE THERE IS NO PRACTICAL WAY TO READILY ACCESS THE VEHICLE FROM THE PASSENGER-SIDE, THERE IS THE POTENTIAL THAT THE VEHICLE OWNER OR PASSENGERS WOULD BE EXPOSED TO UNDUE HARM. IT IS TAKEN FOR GRANTED BY MOST CONSUMERS THAT VEHICLES COME WITH KEYED ACCESS ON THE PASSENGER-SIDE, BUT NOWHERE IN THE MANUFACTURERS LITERATURE DOES IT MENTION THAT THERE ARE NO OUTSIDE LOCKS ON THE PASSENGER-SIDE OF THESE VEHICLES. IF A CONSUMER WERE TO PURCHASE THE VEHICLE WITH POWER LOCKS, THIS WOULDN'T BE AN ISSUE, UNLESS THERE WAS A POWER FAILURE TO THE VEHICLE, BUT VEHICLES SOLD THAT DO NOT COME WITH THE POWER DOOR LOCK FEATURE, DO NOT COME WITH OUTSIDE DOOR LOCKS ON THE PASSENGER-SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. I FEEL THAT THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD RETROFIT THESE VEHICLES WITH OUTSIDE DOOR LOCKS. *JB
