BRAKES FAILED ON 4 OCCASIONS. BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO FLOOR WHEN ATTEMPTING TO STOP ABRUPTLY. I DID SOME RESEARCH AND FOUND THAT THIS WAS A PROBLEM WHICH HAD A RECALL ALTHOUGH I DIDN'T OWN THE VEHICLE DURING THAT TIME. I CONTACTED THE PREVIOUS OWNER WHO SAID HE DIDN'T HAVE IT FIXED AND WASN'T SURE IF HE EVER RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE. I NOTIFIED GMC AND WAS TOLD BY THAT MY VIN WAS NOT FOUND . I BOUGHT THIS VEHICLE LAST YEAR AND HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE BRAKES NOT WORKING PROPERLY. PROBLEM WAS NOTICED THE MORING AFTER THE JIMMY WAS REFUELED. UPON INSPECTION THE REAR SEAM OF THE FUEL TANK WAS RUSTED TO THE POINT OF LEAKING FUEL ALL OVER MY GARAGE, CAUSING A STRONG GAS SMELL. THE CAUSE APPEARS TO BE THAT THE TWO METAL ( TANK AND FRAME) PARTS ARE TO CLOSE ALLOWING DIRT AND ROAD RESIDUE TO SET IN AN IMPOSSIBLE TO CLEAN AREA CAUSING RUST. WITH THE GAS DRIPPING THIS COULD BE A FIRE HAZZARD WITH THE LICENSE PLATE WIREING RUNNING CLOSE TO THE GAS.

I HAVE PROBLEMS STOPPING AT TIMES WHEN I'M IN TWO-WHEEL DRIVE. ON JULY 21, 1999, THE LOCAL NEWS REPORTED THAT GMC WAS HAVING A RECALL FOR ANTI-LOCK BRAKES. THE YEAR, MAKE, AND MODEL OF MY VEHICLE WAS MENTIONED. ON JULY 22, 1999, I WENT ON THE NHTSA WEBSITE AND READ THAT OWNERS SHOULD BE NOTIFIED IN JULY-AUGUST 1999. ON AUGUST 9, 1999, I E-MAILED GMC BECAUSE I DIDN'T RECEIVE ANY RECALL INFORMATION AS OF THAT DATE. THEY INFORMED ME TO CALL CUSTOMER SERVICE. ON OCTOBER 6, 1999, I CALLED GMC. I WAS TOLD THAT THEY COULDN'T FIND MY VEHICLE IN THEIR SYSTEM AND THEY WERE RUNNING WAY BEHIND ON THE RECALL. THEY SAID IT COULD TAKE UP UNTIL THE END OF THE YEAR BEFORE I MIGHT BE NOTIFIED THAT I AM INCLUDED IN THE RECALL.

TREAD SEPERATION IN PHANTOM A/P TIRE THAT WAS MANAUFACTURED WITHIN TIME PERIOD OF NHTSA ACTION #PE02056. SUBSTANTIAL PHYSICAL INJURY TO 72 YEAR OLD DRIVER AND TOTAL LOSS OF VEHICLE. RIMKUS CONSUTLING SERVICES EXPERT GARRET MITCHELL MADE THE FOLLOWING CONCLUSIONS: 1.A DEFECT IN THE LEFT-REAR TIRE ON THE CHEVROLET CAUSED THE TREAD TO SEPARATE FROM THE CARCASS. THE NATURE OF THE FAILURE IS CONSISTENT WITH CONTAMINATION OR IMPROPER VULCANIZATION OF THE TIRE COMPONENTS DURING MANUFACTURING. 2. THE SUDDEN FAILURE OF THE TIRE CAUSED THE DRIVER TO LOSE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND SUBSEQUENTLY COLLIDE WITH A SOLID OBJECT. "THERE WAS A PRESENCE OF POLISHING AND BLUING ON THE RUBBER CARCASS OF THE TIRE [WHICH INDICATED] OVERHEATING OF THE TIRE. . . . IF EVIDENCE OF OVERHEATING IS OBSERVED AROUND THE ENTIRE CIRCUMFERENCE OF THE TIRE, FLEXING OF THE TIRE DUE TO OVERLOADING OR UNDER-INFLATION IS INDICATED. IN THIS CASE, HOWEVER, THE EVIDENCE OF OVERHEATING IS LIMITED TO ONE AREA OF THE TIRE, SPECIFICALLY THE AREA WHERE THE TREAD BEGAN TO SEPARATE FROM THE CARCASS. THIS INDICATES LOCALIZED OVERHEATING DUE TO FRICTION BETWEEN ADJACENT TIRE COMPONENTS WAS TAKING PLACE IN THIS AREA. FURTHERMORE, THE REMAINING TREAD IN THIS AREA IS UNEVENLY WORN, INDICATING A DISCONTINUITY IN THE TIRE STRUCTURE AT THIS LOCATION. THESE OBSERVATIONS INDICATE THE COMPONENTS OF THE TIRE WERE NOT PROPERLY BONDED TOGETHER IN THE AREA WHERE THE TREAD SEPARATION BEGAN."

LAST INCIDENT WAS ON HIGHWAY BLOWOUT ON RIGHT REAR TIRE . WE HAD CHECKED AIR PRESSURE ON TIRES PRIOR TO TRIP AND WERE GOOD. FIRESTONE DEALER HERE IN MCPHERSON WHERE THEY WERE PURCHASED WOULD NOT WARRENTY THE TIRE BUT WOULD GIVE A SMALL DISCOUNT. WE ELECTED TO KEEP THE TIRE AND NOT TAKE THE DISCOUNT. IT'S AVAILABLE FOR INSPECTION. WE HAVE OTHER TIRES OF SAME KIND AND TYPE IN WHICH THE STEEL CORDS ARE SHOWING READY TO BLOW SO WE REMOVED THEM ALSO, THEY WERE ON ANOTHER TRUCK OF OURS. WE ALSO HAVE ANOTHER TWO TIRES STILL AT THE DEALER WITH SIMILIAR PROBLEMS , THE DEALER HAS SENT IN A CLAIM TO FIRESTONE ON THEM FROM IN DEC. 2000.
