UPON STARTING MY MOTOR HOME I APPLIED THE BRAKES AND THE PEDAL WENT CLEAR TO THE FLOOR WITH LITTLE OR NO RESISTANCE. THE ENGINE WAS RUNNING AT THE TIME. I TRIED SEVERAL TIMES TO "PUMP UP" THE BRAKES WITH NO CHANGE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A REPAIR STATION WHERE THE INITIAL FINDINGS ARE A MASTER CYLINDER FAILURE. THERE IS NO EVIDENCE OF AN EXTERNAL LEAK, BOTH BRAKE FLUID CHAMBERS ARE FULL. NO REPAIRS HAVE BEEN STARTED AS OF THIS DATE 1/27/02. I CALLED MONACO/SAFARI/SPARTAN (CHASSIS) AND SPOKE TO A TECH SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE WHO CLAIMED THAT THE PROBLEM COULD BE CAUSED BY AN INTERNAL FAILURE OF THE MASTER CYLINDER. NOT BELIEVING THAT A FAILURE(NO EXTERNAL LOSS OF FLUID) COULD CAUSE THIS CONDITION I CALLED BENDIX (NOW BOSCH) ENGINEERING AND SPOKE TO MR RALPH PORTER (SP). HE INDICATED THAT THEIR MASTER CYL. COULD NOT FAIL IN THIS WAY UNLESS THERE WAS A TOTAL BREAKDOWN OF THE INTERNAL SEALS IN THE CYL. WHICH WAS MOST UNLIKELY.NEITHER COMPANY INDICATED AN INTEREST IN INVESTIGATING THIS EVENT. I HAVE REVIEWED THE FED. MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STD. 105 AND HAVE CONCLUDED THAT THIS EVENT WAS IN VIOLATION FO THE STANDARD.*AK

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1995 GMC SAFARI. WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED IN THE GARAGE, THE FRONT TORSION BAR ON THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE SNAPPED IN HALF. THE ENTIRE DRIVER SIDE FRONT END DROPPED DOWN ON THE TIRE. THE CONTACT CALLED GM AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS OUT OF WARRANTY AND THAT HE WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE REPAIR. THE PURCHASE DATE WAS UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 156,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 144,000.

THE CONSUMER OWNS A 1995 GMC SAFARI. THE CONTACT SAYS WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS SITTING IN THE GARAGE THEY HEARD A LOUD BANGING NOISE. WHEN THEY WENT OUT TO THE GARAGE THEY NOTICED THAT THE TORSION BAR SNAPPED. THE MECHANIC NOTICED SEVERAL OF THE SAME VEHICLES WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. ALSO ON THE NHTSA WEBSITE THERE WERE 26 COMPLAINTS FOR THIS SAME PROBLEM. *AK THE CONSUMER REQUESTED REIMBURSEMENT. THE DEALER REPLACED BOTH THE LEFT BROKEN TORSION BAR AND THE RIGHT TORSION. *SC *JB

WHEN RIGHT FRONT TORSION BAR ON ALL WHEEL DRIVE MINIVAN WAS REPLACED TWO YEARS AGO, VAN BEGAN EXHIBITING UNSTABLE, EXTREMELY SENSITIVE, AND DANGEROUS HANDLING CHARACTERISTICS AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. REPLACEMENT OF TIRES, TWO SETS OF SHOCK ABSORBERS, AND MULTIPLE REALIGNMENTS AT MY EXPENSE DID NOT SOLVE THIS PROBLEM. IF I HAD NEEDED TO MAKE AN EMERGENCY EVASIVE MANEUVER UNDER THESE CONDITIONS, MY VAN WOULD VERY LIKELY HAVE ROLLED OVER. WHEN LEFT FRONT TORSION BAR WAS REPLACED THIS WEEK, I WAS INFORMED THAT GM HAD DEVELOPED A NEW TORSION BAR DESIGN, AND THAT I WAS NOW REQUIRED TO REPLACE BOTH LEFT AND RIGHT BARS IF EITHER FAILED. THIS DUAL REPLACEMENT FINALLY SOLVED MY HANDLING PROBLEMS. THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD RECALL AND REPLACE SUCH DEFECTIVE PARTS FREE WHEN THEY ENDANGER PASSENGERS! I HAVE PAID FOR REPLACING THREE DEFECTIVE TORSION BARS OVER A TWO YEAR PERIOD. *JB

WE DROVE IT A SHORT TIME AND THE LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN. WE CONTACTED C & O AND THEY SAID TO BRING IT BACK AND WE DID AND THIS TIME THEY REPLACED THE AIRBAG. THE LIGHT WAS OFF FOR A SHORT TIME AND THEN CAME ON AGAIN. WE CONTACTED PERFORMANCE MOTORS IN PARSONS AND THEY LOOKED AT IT AND THE LIGHT WENT OFF FOR A SHORT TIME. NOW WE ARE CONSIDERING SELLING THIS VAN AND WAS TOLD THAT IF THE AIR BAG LIGHT IS ON WE CANNOT SELL IT. THE FREEZE PLUGS ON THIS VEHICLE ARE LEAKING DUE TO CORROSION. IT IS OCURRING ON AT LEAST 4 OF THESE THAT I CAN SEE. THE VEHICLE WAS UNDER WARRANTY UP TO 75,000 MILES AND DID NOT HAVE ANY LEAKS. I FEEL THE FREEZE PLUGS WERE DEFECTIVE FROM THE FACTORY AND SHOULD BE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY.

95 GMC SAFARI/95 CHEVY ASTRO I HAVE OWNED 3 OF THESE MODELS SINCE 1995 AND HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM WITH ALL 3 OF THEM. THE FUSIBLE LINK CONNECTION LOCATED BEHIND THE BATTERY WHERE POWER GOES INTO THE FUSE PANEL HAS ONE CONNECTION THAT OVERHEATS, MELTS THE PLASTIC MODULE AND CREATES A CIRCUIT PROBLEM. TOTAL LOSS OF POWER WHILE DRIVING HAS OCCURRED, TOTALLY CRIPPLING THE VEHICLES. UPON SEARCHING SALVAGES FOR A REPLACEMENT CONNECTOR, I FOUND 4 OUT OF 5 HAD THE SAME OVERHEATED, MELTED PLASTIC, DANGEROUS CONNECTION. I HAVE THE CONNECTOR I REPLACED ON 1 OF THE VEHICLES AND CAN PROVIDE IT TO THE INVESTIGATION. THIS SITUATION COULD POTENTIALLY LEAD TO A FATAL ACCIDENT. TOTAL ELECTRICAL POWER MEANS ENGINE QUITS, LIGHTS GO OUT AT NIGHT, POWER STEERING AND POWER BRAKES ARE INOPERABLE. I HAD TO REPLACE THE FUEL INEJCTOR SYSTEM ON THIS VEHICLE. THE MECHANIC THAT REPAIRED THIS INFORMED ME THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS GENERAL MOTORS ENGINE. THE COST WAS CLOSE TO $500. THE FAULTY INJECTOR CAUSED RAW GASOLINE TO FLOW DOWN INTO THE CRANKCASE THINNING OUT THE ENGINE OIL. RAW FUEL WAS DRIPPING OUT OF MY EXHAUST PIPE. THIS IS A POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS SITUATION AS IT COULD LEAD TO AN ENGINE FIRE AND POSSIBLE PERSONAL INJURY. GM HAS KNOW THAT THESE INJECTORS WERE FAULTY AND I FEEL THAT THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL ON THIS. I WOULD ALSO LIKE GM TO REIMBURSE ME FOR THIS PART THANK YOU. *AK

MY DAUGHTER WAS INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT ON THE EVENING OF 8/24/2000. SHE WAS COMING TO A STOP AT A RED LIGHT ON WET PAVEMENT AND REPORTED THAT THE VAN WOULD NOT STOP. IT CONTINUED INTO THE INTERSECTION. IT WAS STRUCK BY A CAR ON THE CROSS STREET AND WAS PUSHED INTO THE OPPOSITE LANE WHERE IT WAS STRUCK BY A THIRD CAR. I HAVE HEARD REPORTS OF SIMILAR PROBLEMS WITH GMC VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH ANTI-LOCK BRAKES. ALSO, OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS HAVE REPORTED INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS WITH THE BRAKES. GMC ISSUED A RECALL OF SOME VEHICLEES LAST YEAR TO CORRECT A PROBLEM WITH THEIR ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM. I HAVE CONTATCED GM AND WAS TOLD THAT THIS VAN IS NOT INVOLVED IN THE RECALL. NEVERTHELESS, I AM CONCERNED THAT IT EXHIBITING THE SAME PROBLEM.

THE TIRE WAS RIPPED INSIDE AND THE IN 10 MILES MORE IT BLOW OUT AT 45 MPH. SEARS WILL NOT REPLACED. IT WAS NOT MY FAULT THIS TIME. I REMEMBERED THAT I DROVE UP ON THE NEW PAVEMENT ROAD TO THE TOP OF HILL. I FELT THAT THE LEFT REAR TIRE SILPPED VERY FAST IN ONE TURN. THEN I CHECKED IT TO MAKE IT WAS NOT FLAT. I CONTINUED TO DRIVE BACK TO MY PLACE. ABOUT 10 OR 15 MILES LATER THAT TIRE BLOW OUT. DUE TO MY DEAFNESS I COULD NOT HEAR IT BLOW OUT. I KEPT DRIVING ABOUT ANOTHER THREE OR FIVE MILES BEFORE WE STOPPED FOR DRINKS. I LOOKED AT THAT TIRE FLAT ALREADY. IT WAS DAMAGED BADLY BECAUSE BOTH EDGE WERE WORE OUT OF THREAD. WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE LOST ALL OF THE FOLLOWING FUNCTIONS: POWER STEERING, BRAKES, ENGINE COOLING/WATER PUMP, AND ALL OTHER FUNCTIONS OPERATED BY THE SERPENTINE BELT. MY INITIAL INSPECTION REVEALED THAT THE SERPENTINE BELT HAD BECOME DISLODGED FROM THE PULLEY SYSTEM. FURTHER INSPECTION REVEALED THAT THE ALTERNATOR BRACKET FAILED ALLOWING THE BELT TO BECOME DISLODGED. STILL FURTHER INSPECTION BY A QUALIFIED MECHANIC REVEALED THAT THE REAR BOLT(S) HOLDING THE ALTERNATORS IN PLACE WERE MISSING ALLOWING ENOUGH DOWNWARD PRESSURE TO BE EXERTED ON THE ALTERNATOR PULLEY TO BREAK THE TWO FRONT "EARS" OF THE ALTERNATOR BRACKET AND TO THROW THE BELT OFF THE PULLEYS. THE ALTERNATOR HAS NOT BEEN REPLACED AND I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER. THIS LEADS ME TO BELIEVE THAT THE REAR BOLT(S) OF THE ALTERNATOR EITHER WERE NOT PROPERLY TIGHTENED AT THE FACTORY OR THAT THEY NEED TO BE INSPECTED OCCASSIONALLY TO ENSURE THEY HAVE NOT LOOSENED AND FALLEN OUT. I HAVE FOUND NOTHING IN THE OWNERS MANUAL SUGGESTING THAT THESE BOLTS BE CHECKED AS A ROUTINE MAINTENANCE PROCEDURE. MY GUESS IS THEY WERE NOT PROPERLY TIGHTENED IN THE FIRST PLACE. I WAS FORTUNATE IN THAT THE FAILURE OCCURRED AT RELATIVELY LOW SPEED AS THE VEHICLE BECAME NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO EITHER STEER OR STOP.
