TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1997 GMC SIERRA 1500. THE CONTACT STATED THAT AFTER ENGAGING THE BRAKES AND COMING TO A COMPLETE STOP, THE VEHICLE LUNGED FORWARD. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL REPAIR SHOP AND THEY WERE UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HE REPLACED THE HUBS, ROTORS, CALIPERS, AND MASTER CYLINDER AS A TEMPORARY REMEDY, BUT THE FAILURE CONTINUED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 14,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 38,000.

BRAKE LINES ARE SEVERELY CORRODED. LUCKILY THERE WAS NO ACCIDENT. ALSO OWN AN 87 & 83 MERCEDES BENZ, NO ISSUES WITH CORROSION ON ANY FUEL OR BRAKE LINES. BRAKES ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT SYSTEM ON A VEHICLE. GM SHOULD BE MADE TO FIX THIS, THIS IS NEGLIGENT CORPORATE BEHAVIOR. *KB

WHILE TURNING A LEFT TURN ON A HIGHWAY JANUARY 28 THE VEHICLE LOST POWER STEERING. I HAVE REMOVED AND REPLACED THE POWER STEERING PUMP THREE TIMES, GEARBOX FOUR TIMES, ALL THE TIEBARS AND COMPONENTSD TWICE. GMC IS AWARE OF THE STEERING PROBLEMS AND HAS NOT RECALLED ANY VEHICLES FOR POWER STEERING PROBLEMS! THIS STEERING PROBLEM IS VERY SEVERE ISSUE AND A EXTREME HAZARD ON THE ROAD, ESPECIALLY; WHEN THE LOSE OF POWER STEERING HAPPENS ANY TIME WITHOUT WARNING. THE FAILURE HAS BEEN OCCURRING FOR THE LAST FOUR YEARS, BUT THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN INSPECTED. THE CONTACT IS IN THE PROCESS OF TAKING THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION. I WAS RETURNING TO ALBUQUERQUE, NM FROM AMARILLO, TX PULLING A TRAILER WITH AN ANTIQUE STOVE IN MY TRAILER. IMMEDIATELY BEFORE LEAVING AMARILLO, I HAD MY FRIEND CHECK ALL OF THE TRAILER LIGHTS AND THEIR FUNCTIONING. THEY ALL WORKED FINE. I TOOK THE SCENIC ROUTE THROUGH HEREFORD ENTERING ONTO INTERSTATE HIGHWAY 40 AT SANTA ROSA, NM AT ABOUT 9:00 PM - IT WAS DARK. BEFORE LONG A SEMI PASSED ME AN HE FLICKED HIS HEADLIGHTS. I WASN'T SURE WHAT THE FLICKING OF HIS LIGHTS MEANT. ABOUT 30 MILES LATER A SEMI PASSED ME RIGHT BEFORE A BIG HILL. HE IMMEDIATELY LOST HIS SPEED GOING UP THE HILL AND IN A FEW MOMENTS I WAS RIGHT BEHIND HIM. I DID NOT WANT TO PASS HIM SINCE I WAS PULLING THE TRAILER, SO I STAYED BEHIND HIM AS HE CONTINUED TO SLOW DOWN TO AROUND 55 MPH. ANOTHER SEMI APPROACHED VERY FAST FROM BEHIND AND THERE WERE OTHER CARS IN THE FAST LANE. AT THE LAST SECOND THE SEMI SWERVED AROUND ME TO THE LEFT AND PASSED ME AND HONKED HIS HORN AT ME. HE NARROWLY MISSED RUNNING INTO THE REAR OF MY TRAILER. THIS TIME I NEW SOMETHING WAS UP, SO I PULLED OUT AT THE CLINES CORNERS EXIT AND STOPPED AS SOON AS I COULD. SURE ENOUGH, ALL OF THE LIGHTS ON THE TRAILER WERE OUT. I PUSHED ON THE WIRING COUPLER AND THEY ALL CAME ON. I WENT ABOUT 10 MORE MILES AND PULLED OFF AT ANOTHER EXIT TO CHECK THE LIGHTS. THEY WERE STILL ON, BUT I PUSHED THE COUPLER TOGETHER TO HELP ENSURE IT WAS WORKING LOOSE. ALL OF THE TRAILER LIGHTS WENT OUT AND NO MATTER HOW MUCH I PLAYED WITH THE COUPLER THEY WOULD NOT COME BACK ON. I SPENT THE NEXT 45 MINUTES LAYING ON THE COLD PAVEMENT WITH A FLASHLIGHT CUTTING THE WIRE TO THE LICENSE PLATE LIGHT ON MY TRUCK AND SPLICING IN SOME WIRE TO GET THE LIGHTS ON THE REAR OF THE TRAILER TO LIGHT UP. I ALSO HAD TO CREATE A NEW GROUND WIRE. THE COUPLER SYSTEM IS MADE BY VELVAC NEAR MILWAUKEE, WI. I WOULD BE HAPPY TO SEND YOU THE LEFTOVER JUNK PARTS. DAN

THE DEALERSHIP RESEARCHED THAT YEAR AND FOUND THAT THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE FUEL INJECTOR STICKING CAUSING IT TO DO THAT. THERE WAS A PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT OUT WARNING PEOPLE ABOUT THIS PROBLEM WITH THESE TRUCKS. THE PARTS ARE WELL OVER $700. DEXCOOL IS COOLANT USED IN THE SYSTEM, BUT IT DESTROYS THE COOLING SYSTEM WHEN MIXED WITH AIR. GMC WILL NOT RECOGNIZE THE FACT THAT IT PUT DEXCOOL IN THE SYSTEM AND WHEN THE WATERPUMP DEVELOPED A WEEPHOLE THE AIR THAT GOT IN DESTROYED THE COOLING SYSTEM. THIS IS GMC'S AND DEXCOOL'S FAULT.

IF I WERE DRIVING AND STOPPED AT A LIGHT THERE WOULD BE NO PROBLEM .HOWEVER IF I WERE THEN TO RELEASE THE PEDAL AND APPLY IT AGAIN THE ABS SEEMS TO ACTIVATE AND I BASICALLY CANNOT STOP THE VEHICLE. I DID HIT SOMEONE ONCE BUT IT DIDN'T DO MUCH DAMAGE BECAUSE I WAS GOING SLOW UNDER 5MPH. STEEL HYDRAULIC BRAKE LINE UNDER TRUCK BED AND RUNNING ALONG DRIVER SIDE FRAME RUPTURED WHILE DRIVING. RESULT WAS LOSS OF LOSS OF PRESSURIZATION/BRAKE FLUID, MUSHY BRAKE PEDAL, AND GREATLY DECREASED BRAKING PERFORMANCE. INSPECTION REVEALS SIGNIFICANT RUST AREAS ON ALL STEEL BRAKE LINES REQUIRING COMPLETE REPLACEMENT OF ALL BRAKE LINES.

BRAKE FLUID BEGAN LEAKING FROM UNDER THE DRIVER SIDE DOOR. CLOSER INSPECTION REVEALED THE BRAKE LINE HAD CORRODED AND BEGAN TO LEAK. THIS WAS REPLACED IN JANUARY 2011. AFTER REPLACING BOTH FRONT BRAKE PADS AND PRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL, THE BRAKE LINE ON THE PASSENGER SIDE BURST AND AFTER INSPECTING THIS BRAKE LINE AS WELL, IT WAS CORRODED AND FINALLY GAVE WAY DUE TO THE EXTRA PRESSURE EXERTED BY THE NEW UNWORN BRAKE PAD. THE AMOUNT OF CORROSION SEEMED EXCESSIVE FOR THIS TO HAPPEN SO SUDDENLY. IN BOTH CASES, THE VEHICLE WAS NOT IN MOTION AND NO HARM WAS CAUSED DUE TO EARLY RECOGNITION OF THE PROBLEM. *TR

I OWN A 97 GMC TRUCK. CURRENTLY, THE TRUCK HAS A LITTLE OVER 55,000 MILES. APPROXIMATELY, 2 YEARS AGO THE INTERIOR DOOR HANDLE FAILED TO OPEN THE DRIVER SIDE DOOR. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO LEHMERS IN CONCORD AND THEY REPAIRED THE PROBLEM AT NO CHARGE TO ME... IT WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY. LAST WEEK THE SAME PROBLEM OCCURRED ON THE DRIVER SIDE AND "STARTED TO SHOW SIGNS OF THE SAME PROBLEM" ON THE PASSENGER SIDE DOOR. SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS OUT OF WARRANTY, I DECIDED TO "SAVE A BUCK" AND FIX THE PROBLEMS MYSELF. AFTER REMOVING THE DRIVER SIDE INTERIOR HANDLE ASSEMBLY, I WAS SHOCKED TO FIND THE HANDLE ITSELF CRACKED I.E. THE HANDLE ASSEMBLY IS POORLY DESIGNED. (IT'S PLASTIC.) WINDSHIELD WIPERS HAVE RECENTLY BEEN ACTING UP WHEN ACTIVATING THE WASHER MECHANISM. SOMETIMES THEY WON'T WORK, SOMETIMES THEY STOP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE WIPE CYCLE. I HAVE OWNED MY 1997 GMC K1500 SIERRA SINCE 1999 AND HAVE EXPERIENCED CONTINUOUS MOMENTARY LOSS OF POWER STEERING CONTROL DUE TO A FAILING VSS SENSOR LOCATED ON THE STEERING COLUMN. THIS LOSS OF POWER STEERING CONTROL OCCURS AT ANY SPEED AND DIRECTION. I HAVE HAD THIS COMPONENT REPLACED TWICE OVER THE YEARS AND THE SENSOR STARTS TO INTERMITTENTLY FAIL WITHIN 6 MONTHS. EVERY INDIVIDUAL I HAVE TALKED TO OVER THE YEARS WHO HAS OWNED A GM 1997-1999 C/K FULL-SIZE VEHICLE HAS EXPERIENCED THIS SUDDEN LOSS OF CONTROL IN THE STEERING WHEEL AT ONE TIME OR ANOTHER. AT IDLE (750 RPM)SPEED ENGINE IS INTERMITTENT . AS FOR THE STEERING, WHILE DRIVING AT CRUISING 45-65 MPH IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE TO CONTROL VEHICLE, STEERING FELT LIKE A FEATHER IN THE AIR, UNCONTROLLABLE. MY THROTTLE PLATE BROKE. I WAS DRIVING DOWN A COUNTY ROAD, I LET OFF THE ACCELERATOR AND MY TRUCK CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE TO UNCONTROLLABLE SPEEDS OF 75 M.P.H. TRUCK WILL NOT START. NOT HEARING THE ELECTIC FUEL PUMP IN GAS TANK. TRUCK TOWED FOR REPAIRS. DURING FUEL PUMP REPLACEMENT. NOTICED THE CONNECTOR INSIDE THE GAS TANK ARCED AND BURNED WITH 2 INCHES OF INSULATION BURNED OFF THE WIRES SUPPLYING POWER TO THE FUEL PUMP. 1997 GMC TRUCK. I GUESS THIS CONNECTOR THAT MATES THROUGH THE TANK HAS HAD A HISTORY OF ARCING BURNING HERE. ALSO THE CONNECTOR DEFECT ISNT EASILY NOTICABLE TO THE TECHNICIAN. CAUSING INTERMITTENT FUEL PUMP FAILURE AS IN MY CASE. HAS THERE BEEN ANY HISTORY OF FIRE/EXPOSION WITH THESE CONNECTORS ON GM VEHICLES. THIS I FEEL IS A SERIOUS DEFECT. THE ENGINE ROD BEARINGS STARTED MAKING NOISE AT 80,000 MILES. THE NOISE PROGRESSIVLY GOT WORSE SO I WAS ADVISED TO RUN A 15W-40 OIL AND RUN THE MOTOR TO FAILURE. GM GAVE ME A PRICE OF $2500 FOR ENGINE REPLACEMENT SAYING IT WOULD BE VERY COSTLY TO JUST REPLACE ROD BEARINGS AND THE WARRANTY ON THE NEW MOTOR WAS BETTER. AS FAR AS THE STEERING PROBLEM, THE TRUCK STARTED TO UNDER-STEER AT ABOUT 4500 MILES. AS YOU ENTER A TURN (LEFT OR RIGHT) SOMETIMES THE TRUCK JUST DIVES IN THAT DIRCTION AND YOU MUST COMPENSATE IN THE OTHER DIRECTION. IT HAS GOTTEN SO BAD THAT I AM THE ONLY ONE WHO DRIVES THE TRUCK. THE VEHICLE STALLED 5 TIMES IN ONE MORNING WHILE DRIVING TO WORK. THE WEATHER WARMED UP OUTSIDE AND THE VEHICLE RAN AND STARTED FINE. THE NEXT EVENING THE VEHICLE STARTED FINE, I GOT 1/2 BLOCK DOWN THE ROAD IT STALLED AGAIN. I WAITED FOR A FEW MINUTES AND IT RAN FINE. THE NEXT MORNING IT STARTED FINE AND I DROVE IT FOR MILES, HAD NO PROBLEMS WITH IT STALLING. WE CALLED GMC TO SEE IF THERE WAS A RECALL ON WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR, BECAUSE THE WIPERS WOULD WORK WHEN THEY WANTED TO WORK. NOT WHEN YOU NEEDED THEM TO WORK. THEY HAD TOLD US THAT THERE WAS ALSO AN IGNITION COIL PROBLEM WITH THIS TRUCK-THEY CALLED THE GMC DEALER THAT WAS TO DO THE RECALL WORK. A FAULTY IGNITION COIL CAN GIVE THE SAME SIDE EFFECTS AS A DEFECTIVE FUEL PUMP. WE DROVE THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER, WHEN WE TURNED THE VEHICLE OFF IT WOULD NOT RESTART. THE RECALL WORK WAS PERFORMED ON THE VEHICLE, BUT STILL WOULD NOT START. THE GMC DEALER TOLD US IT WAS MOST LIKELY THE FUEL PUMP, THE DEALER TOLD US THE FUEL PUMPS IN THIS VEHICLE GO OUT "FREQUENTLY." BUT, HE OFFERED US TO REPLACE THE FUEL PUMP FOR $450.+ INCLUDING LABOR. OR SELL US ONE OVER THE COUNTER FOR APPROXIMATELY $425.00 + TAX. AND WE COULD INSTALL IT OURSELVES. NEEDLESS TO SAY, WE HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO OUR HOUSE AND NOW ARE DECIDING WHAT TYPE OF FUEL PUMP SHOULD BE BOUGHT FOR A VEHICLE THAT THE FUEL PUMP GOES OUT FREQUENTLY IN. OUR BIGGEST CONCERN IS THAT THIS TRUCK HAS 85,066 MILES ON IT, AND HAS BEEN MAINTAINED TO THE HIGHEST STANDARDS. WHY ARE THE VEHICLES FITTED WITH FAULTY/DEFECTIVE PRODUCTS. I PURCHASED THIS TRUCK NEW, AND AT APPROXIMATELY 23,000 I WAS DRIVING THE VEHICLE AT AROUND 55MPH WHEN THE ENGINE FAILED. IT DID NOT SPUTTER OR KNOCK, IT JUST QUIT, ALL THE GAUGES, ENGINE QUIT INSTANTLY. I PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND TURNED THE KEY OFF, AND THEN RE-STARTED THE ENGINE. AT 42,240 I HAD A FUEL INJECTOR GO OUT, AT 55,590 MILES I HAD A WATER PUMP, SEAL, AND CORE NIPPLES GO BAD, ALONG WITH THE IDLE ARM ASSEMBLY, AND THE MAIN ENGINE BELT REPLACED. AGAIN ONLY 2 WEEKS LATER @ 58,275 MILES I STILL HAD A COOLANT LEAK, AND IT WAS THEN DETERMINED THE INTAKE MANIFOLD HAD DEVELOPED A LEAK, AND THE THERMOSTAT AND SEAL NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE AGAIN ONLY 2 DAYS LATER I AGAIN EXPERIENCED YET ANOTHER PROBLEM, THIS TIME THE ALTENATOR WENT OUT! I COMPLAINED TO THE DEALER, AND TO GENERAL MOTORS, WHO CURRENTLY LOOKING INTO THE MATTER. THE DEALER DID AGGREE IT IS FAIRLY RARE TO HAVE THESE PROBLEMS SO SOON, AND GENERAL MOTORS AGGREES. HOWEVER THAT DOES'NT EASE MY MIND, THAT THEIR MAY BE A DESIGN, OR PARTS PROBLEM WITH THESE VEHICLES. I DID TALK WITH ANOTHER OWNER OF THE SAME TYPE TRUCK A 1992, SAME STYLE AND ENGINE, AND INFORMED ME THAT HE HAD EXACTLY THE SAME TYPE OF PROBLEMS OCCUR AT APROX: THE SAME MILAGE TIME FRAME, AND HAD SEVERAL MORE POP UP WITH THE TRANSMISSION AS WELL.*AK

BRAKE BOOSTER MALFUNCTIONED, CAUSING NO BRAKING ABILITY WHICH MAY HAVE RESULTED IN A CRASH. ALSO, DRIVER AND PASSENGER REAR SEATBELTS , WERE LOCKED UP, COULD NOT USE THE SEATBELT AND WON'T PROTECT THE OCCUPANT IN EVENT A CRASH. DEALER REPLACED BOTH SEATBELTS. THE REAR OF CAB WAS NOT WELDED PROPERLY. DEALER HAD TO WELD THE REAR CAB TO FRONT. REAR AXLE SEAL WILL GO OUT, CAUSING OIL TO GO INTO THE BRAKE SHOES, RESULTING IN NO REAR BRAKES. THE ENGINE STALLED. HAD TO GET A REBUILT ENGINE, AND THE MANUFACTURER PUT OUT A TSB BUT HAS NO SOLUTION. *AK THE ENGINE FELL APART JUST AFTER WARRANTY EXPIRED.
