2003 INFINITY I35 STALLS/DIES WITHOUT WARNING, SPITS/JERKS FORWARD, CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, TCS AND SLIP. HAPPENS WHILE DRIVING BUT USUALLY STARTS RIGHT BACK UP AFTERWARDS. HAS HAPPENED A NUMBER OF TIMES HAVE REPLACED ONE CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR AND STILL HAVE THE SAME ISSUE.

MY 2003 INFINITY I35 STALSL WHILE DRIVING ON LOCAL ROADS AND BUSY STATE HIGHWAYS LOCATED IN THE GREATER HILTON HEAD SC AREA. IT REQUIRES COASTING TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, TURNING THE VEHICLE OFF. THE SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT TURNS ON. I THEN CAN RESTART THE ENGINE AND RETURN TO MY HOME AS SOON AS I CAN. I RESEARCHED THE PROBLEM AND FOUND A RECALL NOTICE THAT DESCRIBED MY PROBLEM. SINCE DISCOVERING THE PROBLEM, I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND THEY INFORMED ME THAT MY VEHICLE WAS NOT COVERED BY THE RECALL. I HAVE TAKEN IT BACK TO THEM TWICE NOW TO FIX THIS PROBLEM AT MY EXPENSE. THE PROBLEM HAS AGAIN RETURNED AND I DON'T WANT TO PAY A 3RD REPAIR BILL TO FIX A PROBLEM THAT OTHERS ARE GETTING FIXED UNDER THE RECALL ( 03V455000). THIS IS GETTING EXPENSIVE, VERY DANGEROUS, AND ELIMINATES THE USE OF MY CAR BY MY WIFE. SHE IS AFRAID TO DRIVE IT AND I UNDERSTAND HER FEAR. WHAT ADDITIONAL INFORMATION IS NEEDED TO GET THIS PROBLEM TAKEN CARE OF.

CAR SHUTS DOWN. OVER THREE YEARS AGO IT DIED WHILE DRIVING. I TOOK IT TO THE INFINITY DEALERSHIP. THEY TOLD ME IT WAS CAM SENSOR. HAD IT & CRANK SENSOR REPLACED. PROBLEM PERSISTED. TOOK BACK TO INFINITY & WAS TOLD IT WAS THE CYLYNOID. HAD THATBREPLACE. PROBLEM PERSISTED. THE INFINITI DEALER SAID THE TIMING CHAIN NEED REPLACED BUT MY CAR WAS NOT WORTH SPENDING THAT AMOUNT OF REPAIR. MY CAR IS WELL KEPT WITH IT JUST NOW TIRNING OVER 100,000 MILES. I GOT A SECOND OPINION FROM A CERTIFIED CUSTOM NISSAN/INFINITI SHOP. HE LAUGHED AT THE TIMING CHAIN SUGGESTION. THEY HAVE BUILT & REPAIRED THOUSANDS OF MY VEHICLE & OTHERS WITJ TIMING CHAINS ...CHAINS DO NOT HAVE ISSUES ON CARS WITH VERY LITTLE MILAGE & GRANDMA DRIVING STYLE!. THEY CHANGED THE SENSORS FOR ME AGAIN USING ORIGINAL INFINITI PARTS. MY CAR RAN FINE FOR 2 YEARS. NOW I FACE THE SAME PROBLEM ONCE MORE. UNFORTUNATELY BEYOND RECALL LIMIT THAT I AM CERTAIN THE DEALERSHIP KNEW ABOUT 3 YEARS AGO WHICH WOULD HAVE BEEN WITHIN RECALL CORRECTION TIME LIMITS! MY CAR LOOSES ALL POWER & ALL DASH LIGHTS COME ON (ENGINE, TCS, SLIP,BRAKE, ETC). SOETIMES IT WILL INSTANTLY COME BACK ALIVE. MOST TIMES IT IS JUST DEAD. SCENARIOS VARY: 60 MPH ON FREEWAY, SITTING AT RED LIGHT, UPON ACCELERATION, GOING 5 MPH, AFTER 5 MINUTES OF DRIVE TIME, AFTER DAYS OF DRIVE TIME, ... THERE IS NO PATTERN OR PETICULAR ACTION THAT CAUSES IT. IT IS VERY SCARY & DANGEROUS TO ME & ALL AROUND ME. NOW I HAVE A GREAT CAR IN LIKE NEW CONDITION WITH ONLY 100,000 MILES, PAID FOR, THAT I HAVE TO REPLACE WITH NO MONEY OR CONTINUE TO ENDANGER MYSELF & OTHERS. I AM FURIOUS. !!!! WE WERE DRIVING LOCALLY AT NORMAL SPEED AND THE CAR SUDDENLY LOST POWER AS THOUGH WE RAN OUT OF GAS. WE WERE ABLE TO SLIDE SOMEWHAT TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. AFTER A WHILE, THE CAR STARTED AGAIN AND WE THOUGHT IT WAS JUST SOME KIND OF FLUKE. WE ARE SENIOR CITIZENS AND DO NOT DRIVE A GREAT DEAL HOWEVER WE THOUGHT ALL WAS WELL AND IN AUGUST WE ROAD ON THE HIGHWAY 95 TO CONNECTICUT AND THE EXACT SAME THING HAPPENED AFTER WE ARRIVED AND WERE PULLING INTO A LOCAL MALL, ONCE AGAIN WE HAD TO BE TOWED. IF THIS HAD HAPPENED TO US ON 95 WE WOULD HAVE BEEN KILLED. ABOUT A WEEK AGO MY DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING AT NORMAL SPEED IN THIS AREA LOCALLY AND THE SAME EXACT THING HAPPENED, AT NIGHT AND THE CAR WOULD NOT RESPOND AND A TOW TRUCK HAD TO BE CALLED AND THE CAR TOWED TO A SERVICE STATION. THE NEXT DAY WE SPOKE TO THE MECHANIC AND HE SAID HE DROVE THE CAR ALL OVER AND DID TESTING AND FOUND NOTHING. THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS MATTER. MY DAUGHTER OFTEN HAS HER BABY IN THE CAR AND SO EVEN MORE DANGER IS INVOLVED. THE ENGINE WARNING INDICATOR BEGAN TO ILLUMINATE AND REMAINED ILLUMINATED UNTIL THE ENGINE WAS TURNED OFF. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE THEY WERE UNABLE TO LOCATE THE PROBLEM. THE VEHICLE WAS ALSO TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSIS. THE TECHNICIAN STATED THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE ACTUATOR WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THERE WAS A RECALL UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 03V455000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING). THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND ADVISED THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 77,000.

TAKATA RECALL 2003 INFINITI I35 PASSENGER AIR BAGS WERE RECALLED AND REPLACED BY DEALER BUT DRIVERS SIDE AIR BAG HAS NOT BEEN RECALLED. DEALER WILL NOT REPLACE DRIVER'S SIDE TAKATA AIRBAG UNLESS RECALL IS ANNOUNCED. DRIVERS SIDE TAKATA AIRBAG IS "SAME DESIGN AS PASSENGER UNIT," AND IS "LIKELY JUST AS DANGEROUS" ACCORDING TO INFINITI DEALER. 2003 INFINITI I35 AND NISSAN MAXIMA ARE IDENTICAL SHARED PLATFORMS.

TAKATA RECALL--------MY BROTHER WHO LIVED IN NEW YORK CITY GAVE ME HIS 2003 INFINITI I 35 WHEN HE RETIRED FROM NY PD AND GAVE ME THE INFINITI. SO I DROVE THE CAR TO CALABASH NORTH CAROLINA WHICH IS 10 MINUTE DRIVE TO MYRTLE BEACH SOUTH CAROLINA. FOR ABOUT 6 MONTHS OR SO NO PROBLEMS WITH THE AIRBAG HOWEVER IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SUMMER MY AIRBAG LIGHT COMES ON? SO I CALLED MY BROTHER AND HE TOLD ME THE CAR ALREADY HAD THE AIRBAG REPLACE PER THE RECALL. SO I CALLED INFINITI TO SEE IF THEY COULD HELP ME, THEY INFORMED ME THAT THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO BUT THEY SAID I COULD GO TO A NISSAN OR INFINITI SERVICE. I GO AND THE SERVICE MANAGER TOLD ME IT WAS $125 FOR DIAGNOSTIC TEST. CALLED INFINITI BACK AND AGAIN I WAS INFORMED THAT THERE WAS NOTHING THAT THEY COULD DO. I HAVE BEEN DRIVING FOR OVER 40 YEARS AND OWNED LOTS OF CARS NEVER ONCE DID I EVER HAVE A PROBLEM WITH AN AIRBAG! I HAVE OWNED FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC CARS AND AGAIN NO AIRBAG PROBLEMS. WHAT ARE THE MATHEMATICAL PROBABILITY OF MY DEFECTIVE AIRBAG SYSTEM FROM ONLY A INFINITI I35 2003 BEING THE ONLY AIRBAG PROBLEM WITH ANY AUTOMOBILE THAT I HAVE OWNED IN THE LAST 40 + YEARS? THE LETTER FROM FLORIDA HIGHWAY SAFETY AND MOTOR VEHICLES STATES THAT HAT THERE HAS BEEN AN AIRBAG RECALLED FOR A SAFETY DEFECT IN THE AIRBAG THAT COULD RESULT IN DEATH OR SERIOUS INJURY TO ME AND/OR MY PASSENGERS. I BOUGHT A 2003 INFINIT I35 A YEAR AGO AS MY FIRST CAR. I HAVE BEEN HAVING PROBLEMS WITH MY VEHICLE DYING FOR WHAT SEEMS TO BE NO REASON. NO WARNING LIGHTS WOULD COME ON NOT EVEN A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY WHEN IT HAPPENED A WEEK AGO. WHILE I WAS DRIVING IT DIED A TOTAL OF FOUR TIMES. WHEN I TRIED TO START IT BACK UP IT WOULDN'T TURN OVER. IT WOULD NOT TAKE A JUMP. NO FLUIDS WERE LOW. NO CABLES OR TERMINALS WERE LOOSE. I ENDED UP HAVING TO GET THE VEHICLE TOWED. AT THE TIME IT HAD 216,000 MILES ROUGHLY. WHEN I DID RESEARCH, I FOUND THAT THERE WAS A RECALL ASSOCIATED WITH INFINITI MODELS 2003-2004 THAT HAD FAULTY CRANKSHAFT AND CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSORS. THE SAME SYMPTOMS THAT I HAD WERE MATCHING UP TO THE THOSE OF THE RECALL. IT WAS HAPPENING TO THOSE MODELS HAVING 113,000-225,000 ROUGHLY. WHEN I SEARCHED WITH THE NHTSA WEBSITE AND INFINIT I FOUND THAT THIS WAS NOT ASSOCIATED WITH MY VIN NUMBER. I THEN TOOK IT TO A MECHANIC AND FOUND THAT IN FACT THOSE SAME SENSORS WERE FAULTY CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO FUNCTION INCORRECTLY. SO NOW I HAVE TO WONDER WHY THEN MY 2003 INFINIT I35 WAS NOT RECOGNIZED AS BEING AFFECTED BY MY RECALL WHEN I NOW HAVE PROOF THAT THE SAME SENSORS ASSOCIATED WITH THIS RECALL ARE IN FACT FAULTY.

THE CONTACT PLACED THE TRANSMISSION INTO NEUTRAL, RESTARTED THE ENGINE, AND THE DROVE AWAY SAFELY. AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC CAME TO THE CONTACT'S HOME TO DIAGNOSE THE VEHICLE, BUT THE TEST COULD NOT BE READ. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. DRIVING ON HIGHWAY @55MPH WHEN ENGINE STOPPED FUNCTIONING. LOST POWER STEERING AND POWER BRAKES AND CAREENED OFF THE ROAD ALMOST HITTING A HOUSE. WHEN I WENT TO START THE ENGINE IT HAD GREAT DIFFICULTY ( TOOK ABOUT 30 SECONDS ) WHEN IT FINALLY STARTED THE SERVICE ENGINE SOON, TCS AND SLIP LIGHTS WERE ON. TOOK CAR TO MECHANIC AND WAS TOLD THAT THE CRANK ANGLE SENSOR AND CAM POSITION SENSOR IS FAULTY BUT NISSAN AND GOVT. FAILED TO ADD THE PROPER VIN NUMBERS TO THE RECALL BECAUSE THIS IS THE 30TH CAR HE'S SEEN WITH THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM AND HE KNEW IMMEDIATELY WHAT IT WAS WHEN HE SAW THE COMBINATION OF INDICATOR LIGHTS AND VEHICLE PROBLEMS.

Camshaft sensor according to the Infiniti dealership (Ray Brandt on Causeway in Metairie La.) Is malfunctioning at makes the car engine die while driving. Then when you restart the car the engine revs fine in neutral but once in drive it won't go over 5 mph. Also the timing chain tensioner fails on this car and can cause severe engine damage while the car is being driven. I've looked up both of these problems and have spoken with Nissan and Infiniti and a simple internet search will also confirm that these 2 problems are extremely common on this 5th generation engine. Nissan even lost 2 class action lawsuits on the timing tensioner. Well if Nissan lost 2 court battles over an engine defect that every Nissan internet forum says is a very very common problem then why isn't there a recall. And shouldn't hazing headlights be a safety issue on ALL cars? Almost all cars have this problem and manufacturers keep building cars with UNSAFE headlights. Why aren't these recalls? Thank you for this website. As an American Citizen and consumer with a daughter these safety concerns are very troubling to me and all my friends and business associates.

THOUGH CLOSE, MY VIN DID NOT FALL INTO THE COVERED POPULATION, EVEN THOUGH THE DESCRIBED ISSUE IN THE RECALL IS EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED TO ME. THE DEALER IS NOT ABLE TO REPLACE THE SENSOR UNDER THE RECALL. WHY IS THIS? HOW IS IT DETERMINED WHAT VIN'S FALL INTO THE POPULATION? TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 INFINITI I35. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE VEHICLE STALLED IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE TECHNICIAN WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE A FAILURE BUT DECIDED TO CLEAN THE INJECTORS AND CHECK THE FUEL PUMP AS PRECAUTIONARY MEASURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 90,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 140,000. RECALL - NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 03V455000. ENGINE STOPPED WHILE DRIVING IN NORMAL CONDITIONS WHICH COULD HAVE CAUSED A CATASTROPHIC ACCIDENT. LOSS COMPLETE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND THE "SLIP" LIGHT, "TCS OFF" AND "CHECK ENGINE LIGHT" ALL CAME ON WITH COMPLETE ENGINE FAILURE WHILE DRIVING WITH NO ABILITY TO REGAIN CONTROL. I TOOK THE CAR TO A MECHANIC AND WAS TOLD THERE IS A CODE "P0340" - CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR FAILURE. INFINITI CORPORATE HAD ISSUED A RECALL # R3021 FOR THIS MAJOR ISSUE. WHEN I CALLED INFINITI CORPORATE TO TAKE PART OF THIS SERIOUS RECALL AND SERVICE MY VEHICLE, THEY DID NOT WANT TO HELP CLAIMING THAT THEY DID NOT MARK MY VIN # FOR THE RECALL. I WAS DRIVING ON THE PARKWAY WITH MY FAMILY AND I WAS TRAVELING AT APPROX 60 MPH. OUT OF NO WHERE A TCS AND ABS LIGHT CAME ON THE I DECREASED TO 5 MPH WITHOUT WARNING AND COULDN'T GO FASTER. I HAD MY FOOT ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE PEDAL AND VEHICLE WOULDN'T DRIVE. THIS APPEARS TO BE A CAMSHAFT SENSOR ISSUE FROM WHAT I SEE. I WAS PARKING MY 2003 INFINITI I35 ON THE THIRD LEVEL OF A SANTA MONICA CITY PARKING STRUCTURE WHEN MY CAR SUDDENLY SURGED. I IMMEDIATELY PUT MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE AND TURNED THE CAR (I WAS HEADING INTO A WALL). I HELD MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE UNTIL IT FINALLY CAME OF A COMPLETE STOP. THE CAR HIT THE WALL OF THE PARKING STRUCTURE CAUSING DAMAGE TO THE PAINT ON CONCRETE PARKING STRUCTURE WALL AND MAJOR DAMAGE TO THE AUTOMOBILE. WHILE THE CAR HIT THE WALL ON THE PASSENGER SIDE, THE DAMAGE DUE TO THE POWER OF THE IMPACT WAS ON BOTH SIDES OF THE CAR. IN 2005 DOLLARS THE REPAIR COST WAS JUST UNDER $15,000 AND THE CAR WAS IN THE BODY SHOP FOR SIX WEEKS. AT THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT I FILED A REPORT WITH MY INSURANCE COMPANY(21ST CENTURY INSURANCE), THE INFINITI CORPORATE OFFICE (WHICH WAS IN GARDENA, CALIFORNIA) AND THE CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF MOTOR VEHICLES. NISSAN SENT ME A LETTER SAYING THAT THEIR TECHNICAL SPECIALIST FOUND NO EVIDENCE OF A PRODUCT DEFECT, FAILURE OR MALFUNCTION. I NEVER FELT SAFE IN THE CAR AFTER THE ACCIDENT. I SOLD THE CAR A COUPLE OF YEARS LATER. I DID NOT SUE AND I DO NOT EXPECT ANY FINANCIAL SETTLEMENT. I AM ONLY FILING THIS REPORT NOW FOR THE NHTSA TO HAVE A RECORD. THE CAR SUDDENLY LOSES THROTTLE CONTROL UNDER NORMAL DRIVING CONDITIONS; THE ENGINE RETURN TO "IDLE SPEED". I WAS DRIVING ON THE EXPRESSWAY AND ALL OF A SUDDEN THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND THE CAR STARTED SLOWING DOWN. I PRESSED ON THE GAS PEDAL ALL THE WAY DOWN BUT THE CAR REFUSED TO ACCELERATE. I MANAGED TO PULL OVER AND STOP THE ENGINE. AND THEN RESTARTED THE CAR AND IT SEEMED TO WORK OK FOR A WHILE AND THEN DID IT AGAIN. I MANAGED TO GET IT TO THE DEALER AND IT HAS BEEN THERE SINCE WHILE THEY TRY TO FIGURE OUT WHY THIS IS HAPPENING. THIS PROBLEM STARTED HAPPENING ABOUT A YEAR AGO. THE THROTTLE BODY HAS BEEN REPLACED 4 TIMES IN THE LAST YEAR; THE THROTTLE BODY CONTAINS THE ELECTRIC ACTUATOR FOR THE THROTTLE AND THE SENSORS THAT TELL THE COMPUTER THE POSITION OF THE THROTTLE. THE BRAKE PEDAL AND ACCELERATOR PEDAL ARE CLOSE TOGETHER. WITH MY SIZE 12 FOOT, IT IS EASY TO ACCIDENTALLY HAVE MY SHOE ON BOTH PEDALS. THE CAR HAS ENOUGH ENGINE POWER TO OVERCOME THE BRAKING SYSTEM, AND LEAD TO A COLLISION. WITH THE ABS AND TCS (TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM) ON THIS CAR, I WOULD LIKE TO SEE AN INTERACTION TO LIMIT POWER IF THE ABS IS ACTIVATED. MY REAR TIRES WERE TRYING TO STOP THE CAR (ALMOST DRAGGING) AND WITH THE CAR UNDER POWER (BOTH PEDALS DEPRESSED) THE ABS WAS ACTIVATED BUT I WAS STILL ACCELERATING FORWARD. IF THE TCS WAS LIMITING THE POWER, I WOULD HAVE HAD ENOUGH TIME TO STOP OR HAD ENOUGH TIME TO REMOVE MY RIGHT FOOT OFF OF THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL AND REPOSITION MY FOOT CORRECTLY AND FIRMLY ON THE BRAKE PEDAL. *JB

I RECENTLY TOOK DELIVERY OF A NEW INFINITY FX45. IT NOW HAS ABOUT 600 MILES ON IT. THE HEADLIGHTS ARE AIMED TOO LOW TO ILLUMINATE THE ROAD AHEAD. VISIBILITY IS SEVERELY LIMITED TO ABOUT 2+ CAR LENGTHS AHEAD. I CANNOT MAINTAIN MINIMAL SPEED ON AN UNLIT HIGHWAY, OR WHEN OTHER CARS ARE NOT TRAVELING WITH ME. THE DEALER STATES THAT THE HEADLIGHTS ARE "WITHIN FACTOR SPEC" AND WILL DO NOTHING TO ASSIST. HE WILL NOT CHECK IT AT NIGHT; NOR WILL HE CHECK MY CAR AGAINST OTHERS IN THE SHOP OR ON THE DEALERSHIP FLOOR. THE DEALER ADDS THAT IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO ADJUST THESE LIGHTS AS THERE IS NO ADJUSTMENT CAPABILITY BUILT INTO THE HEADLIGHT MODULE. THE DEALER, PEPE INFINITY, WHITE PLAINS, NY 10601, WILL NO LONGER DISCUSS THE PROBLEM WITH ME; NOR HAS ANYONE CONTACTED ME TO ATTEMPT TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE. IF I CANNOT DRIVE THE CAR AFTER DARK, I WANT TO GET ANOTHER CAR OR HAVE THE PROBLEM FIXED. INFINITY USA SAYS EXACTLY THE SAME THING. THEIR POSITION IS THAT IF INFINITY RELEASED THE CAR, IT MUST MEET ALL FEDERAL SPECIFICATIONS, AND WILL DO NOTHING MORE. THEY DID AGREE TO LET ME VISIT ANOTHER INFINITY DEALER TO "INDEPENDENTLY" CHECK THE HEADLIGHTS, BUT IT WILL PROBABLY BE AT MY OWN EXPENSE. IN THE MEANTIME, THE CAR IS VIRTUALLY UNDRIVEABLE AT NIGHT UNLESS DRIVEN IN A LIGHTED AREA AND AT LOW SPEEDS. *NLM
