How to read a Infiniti I35 VIN — every digit explained

Every Infiniti I35 carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.

1–3 · WMI4T1
4–8 · VDSBF1FK
9 · Check5
10 · YearH
11 · PlantU
12–17 · Serial123456
  • WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
  • VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
  • Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
  • Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
  • Plant (11) — which factory assembled this I35.
  • Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.

Model-year code (10th digit)

The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:

H2017 J2018 K2019 L2020 M2021 N2022 P2023 R2024 S2025 T2026

Where to find your I35 VIN

  • Dashboard — driver's side, visible through the windshield from outside.
  • Driver's door jamb — on the manufacturer sticker when you open the door.
  • Paperwork — vehicle registration, title and insurance card.
  • Engine bay & frame — stamped on the firewall or chassis on many models.

What's wrong. Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2003-2004 Infiniti I35, 2003-2005 FX35 and FX45, and 2006 M35 and M45 vehicles originally sold, or currently registered, in geographic locations associated with high absolute humidity. Specifically, vehicles sold, or ever registered, in Florida, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Saipan, Guam, and American Samoa, as well as Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, and Georgia, are included. Upon deployment of the passenger side frontal air bag, excessive internal pressure may cause the inflator to rupture.

Risk. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger’s frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants potentially resulting in serious injury or death.

Fix. Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger air bag inflator, free of charge. The recall began on June 16, 2015. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261. Note: This recall supersedes recall 14V-701.

What's wrong. Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2001-2003 Maxima, 2002-2006 Sentra, 2002-2004 Pathfinder, 2007-2011 Versa Sedan and Versa Hatchback, 2001-2004 Infiniti I30 and I35, 2002-2003 Inifiniti QX4, 2003-2008 Infiniti FX35 and FX45 and 2006-2010 M35 and M45 vehicles. The vehicles are equipped with non-desiccated, frontal passenger air bag inflators containing phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) propellant that were used as interim remedy parts for previous Takata recalls. These inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.

Risk. An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.

Fix. Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger air bag inflators with alternate desiccated inflators, free of charge. The recall began February 12, 2020. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 888-737-9511 or Infiniti customer service at 888-810-3715.

Engine And Engine Cooling03V455000

What's wrong. On certain passenger vehicles, the circuit board for the crank position sensor or cam position sensor may have an improper solder joint due to solder deformation caused by heat stress accelerated by the existence of flux residue during the soldering process.

Risk. This could cause the "service engine soon" warning light to come on, create a no start condition, cause reduced engine power, or cause the engine to stop running without warning during vehicle operation, which could result in a crash.

Fix. Dealers will replace the crank position sensors. Camshaft position sensor(s), and in some cases, the variable timing control sensor(s). Vehicles involved in a previous recall campaign, 01v357, are also included in this new campaign. The replacement sensors used in that campaign are also affected. Owner notification began on december 22, 2003. Owners should contact nissan at 1-800-647-7261 or infiniti at 1-800-662-6200.

2002 Infiniti I35 recalls 5

Vehicle Speed Control02V043000

What's wrong. On certain passenger vehicles equipped with an electronic throttle control system, the stopper for the accelerator pedal will prevent excessive movement of the accelerator position sensor. If the driver applies overly excessive force to the accelerator pedal while at the same time pushing it to the right, the pedal can "over travel" due to the design of the pedal stopper.

Risk. This will cause the engine malfunction indicator lamp to come on and the engine speed to be severely limited. If this occurs unexpectedly, it could lead to a crash.

Fix. Dealers will install a new accelerator pedal stopper. Owner notification began march 11, 2002. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact nissan at 1-800-647-7261 or infiniti at 800-662-6200.

Suspension:front:control Arm:lower Arm02V146000

What's wrong. On certain passenger vehicles, the pin at the end of the front suspension transverse link (lower control arm) could break where it is mounted to the frame.

Risk. This can cause a knocking sound and abnormal steering. This could result in difficulty controlling the vehicle and increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix. Dealers will replace the transverse links on the left and right sides with new ones. Owner notification began july 29, 2002. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact nissan at 1-800-647-7261 or infiniti at 1-800-662-6200.

2002 I35

I own a 2002 infiniti i35. While i was driving at approximately 35 miles per hour, making a left turn, i was hit on the rear driver's side (t-boned). Non of my air bags deployed and i was severely injured. I sustained injuries to my neck, both shoulders and my back. The driver of the other vehicle illegally ran a stop sign. My vehicle was taken to my residence and was not repaired. As a direct and proximate result of the accident i have been permanently disabled and constantly dealing with the pain. I'm sure i would be in much better shape if the airbag would have deployed. I called the police and reported the accident when it happened. I have not informed my manufacturer of the issues that i have experienced as of yet. My vehicle currently has about 166,000 miles. Another issue my 2002 infiniti i35 was having, not related to the accident referenced above, was stalling without warning on several different occasions. This happens sometimes when i am driving. When this happens, the lights on my dash panel blink on and off rapidly for a few seconds and then turns off completely. My steering wheel locks up at that time as well. *tr

2004 I35

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 infiniti i35. While driving 65 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. The vehicle was able to restart after the battery was recharged, but it failed to accelerate over 5 mph. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact was made aware of nhtsa campaign number: 03v455000 (engine and engine cooling). The manufacturer was notified of the failure; however, the vin was not included. The approximate failure mileage was 208,000.

2004 I35

While driving on 3 separate occasions my vehicle just stopped. First incident while drive on highway, my vehicle shut off, i was unable to steer or control the vehicle. While stopped, i restarted the vehicle. The second occasion , i was traveling 30 mph and the vehicle just stopped. I restarted it. On the most recent occasion, january 13, 2015, i was at a red light, the car stopped running. When i restarted the car i experienced an electric shock through my car key. I am having a mechanic check out what is happening. This is extremely dangerous and frightening. *tr

2004 I35

I was driving the vehicle today and the car started to stall. Several lights came on like service, engine light, break light. Then total shutdown. I took it to local mechanic and he suspects that there's a problem with ignition and key tumbler. This sounds a lot like the gm problem with weak key tumblers and causing sudden stall and crash. Please investigate if infiniti i35 2004 have similar problems and should be recalled. *tr

2004 I35

I had the oil changed in june 2013. In early july my daughter said that the engine light came on and a day or two later the car was making loud noises from under the hood. We checked the oil and it was bone dry. We chalked it up to the last oil change as not having enough oil put in it. Well, 5 weeks later the same thing happened along with the oil light. I checked the oil and it's bone dry. All warning lights go off after putting oil in. The car is burning oil, a lot of oil very quickly with no residue on the driveway. I went online and many people are having the same problem, mileage should not be an issue. I have yet to bring it in to the dealer for fear that it will need an engine. Some light colored smoke comes out of the right side of exhaust. This is probably happening more than documented as owners may feel like there's not much to complain about with a 9 year old luxury car.

2004 I35

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 infiniti i35. The contact stated that while driving 30 mph, the vehicle stalled with the illumination of the check engine warning light. The failure recurred twice. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis where it was advised to the contact that the cam shaft and crank shaft sensors needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired but the failure persisted. The manufacturer was notified of the issue. The approximate failure mileage was 95,000. *tr

2003 I35

Camshaft sensor according to the Infiniti dealership (Ray Brandt on Causeway in Metairie La.) Is malfunctioning at makes the car engine die while driving. Then when you restart the car the engine revs fine in neutral but once in drive it won't go over 5 mph. Also the timing chain tensioner fails on this car and can cause severe engine damage while the car is being driven. I've looked up both of these problems and have spoken with Nissan and Infiniti and a simple internet search will also confirm that these 2 problems are extremely common on this 5th generation engine. Nissan even lost 2 class action lawsuits on the timing tensioner. Well if Nissan lost 2 court battles over an engine defect that every Nissan internet forum says is a very very common problem then why isn't there a recall. And shouldn't hazing headlights be a safety issue on ALL cars? Almost all cars have this problem and manufacturers keep building cars with UNSAFE headlights. Why aren't these recalls? Thank you for this website. As an American Citizen and consumer with a daughter these safety concerns are very troubling to me and all my friends and business associates.

2003 I35

2003 infinity i35 stalls/dies without warning, spits/jerks forward, check engine light, tcs and slip. Happens while driving but usually starts right back up afterwards. Has happened a number of times have replaced one camshaft position sensor and still have the same issue.

2004 I35

While driving about 40-50 mph the vehicle suddenly stalled without warning. I pull over to the road side and was able to restart after several attempts. The service engine soon warning light was not illuminated. Later i found 2 pending dtc p0340 stored in ecm and contacted infiniti hotline. I was told there was no recall for my vehicle and i should file complaint to nhtsa. I also found many complaints by infiniti i35 owners on internet about the same engine stalling problem caused by failed camshaft sensors. The infiniti recall #03v455000 does not apply to my vehicle. *tr

2004 I35

The i35 was hard to start, tcs, slip and check engine lights stayed on. Dealer diag. Bank 2 cam shaft pos sensor failure. This problem appeared similar to nhtsa 2003 campaign number 03v455000. Dealer stated there were no recalls for this problem in 2004 i35. The 2003 campaign report date was 04 nov 2003. My i35 was manf. 07 oct 2003. I feel my 2004 cam shaft pos sensor should also be included in the 03v455000 or a new recall issued for it. The infiniti dealer would not cover the cost of replacing the failed cam shaft pos sensor. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 infiniti i35. The vehicle shut off without warning while driving 50 mph. The throttle position, crank position sensor, and timing control sensor were the causes of the failure. The vehicle lost total power and the power steering and brakes also failed. The vehicle restarted five minutes later; however, it shut off again without warning. The weather was not a factor. The manufacturer stated that there were no recalls on the 2004 vehicles, only the 2002 and 2003 models. The vehicle was towed to the dealer. The total repair cost, including the rental vehicle would be $500. The failure mileage was 85,000. Updated 02/05/09 *bf updated 02/06/09. *jb

2003 I35

Recall - nhtsa campaign id number: 03v455000. Engine stopped while driving in normal conditions which could have caused a catastrophic accident. Loss complete control of the vehicle and the "slip" light, "tcs off" and "check engine light" all came on with complete engine failure while driving with no ability to regain control. We were driving locally at normal speed and the car suddenly lost power as though we ran out of gas. We were able to slide somewhat to the side of the road. After a while, the car started again and we thought it was just some kind of fluke. We are senior citizens and do not drive a great deal however we thought all was well and in august we road on the highway 95 to connecticut and the exact same thing happened after we arrived and were pulling into a local mall, once again we had to be towed. If this had happened to us on 95 we would have been killed. About a week ago my daughter was driving at normal speed in this area locally and the same exact thing happened, at night and the car would not respond and a tow truck had to be called and the car towed to a service station. The next day we spoke to the mechanic and he said he drove the car all over and did testing and found nothing. This is a very serious matter. My daughter often has her baby in the car and so even more danger is involved. I contacted infinity and they said there is no recall but we saw many complaints by owners on the web search, infinity 35 2003, with the exact same complaint. Does there have to be fatality to force some action? *tr

I was driving on the parkway with my family and i was traveling at approx 60 mph. Out of no where a tcs and abs light came on the i decreased to 5 mph without warning and couldn't go faster. I had my foot all the way down to the pedal and vehicle wouldn't drive. This appears to be a camshaft sensor issue from what i see. There was a recall on this issue but i'm being told my vehicle was not an affected car. Others have all had the same happen with this same vehicle and i find it strange that because our vin numbers weren't recalled that we are out of luck. I have brought my car to the dealer twice and they can't figure out the problem. I am so frustrated with this whole situation. *tr

*tr

I drive a 2002 infiniti i35 i was involved in a classic t-bone collision the front end of my vehicle totally destroyed and both vehicles were totaled. The passenger airbag deployed in my vehicle but the driver airbag did not deploy. I was wearing my safety belt. When i reported the incident to nissan/infiniti their response was to send the 2009 airbag safety manual and stated that their were no differences between the 2002/2009 model vehicles. The investigator claimed that the sensors detected the safety belt was in proper use therefore my airbag did not need to be deployed and since my passenger seat belt was not engaged that it deployed as a cautionary measure. My response was to insist on the 2002 i35 airbag safety document. It was forwarded 4 days later with striking differences, namely that there are no sensors in the interior cabin of the 2002 model as stated by the nissan/infiniti investigator. I asked if there were no sensors other than the ones in the bumper on my 2002 model how then did the communication occur in my seat belt that caused my airbag to not deploy and the passenger airbag to deploy. When her report was challenged she said her assessment was accurate and she was standing by it. She has not physically examined my vehicle to determine causation of the failed airbag deployment. I believe that the airbag is defective i was traveling 35 mph, there was no skid prior to impact both vehicles traveled an additional 20 ft. From impact point. Significant injury occurred and i feel nissan has failed to do their job responsibly for their customers safety. *tr

I was in a car accident on 10/8/09 and was hit in the front of my car at approx. 55mi per hour. My passenger air bag deployed, but my driver side did not. I did not have a passenger in the car. I called infiniti consumer affairs, and they told me, if the airbag feels the driver is rigid enough and that the seat belt will hold them back, it will not deploy. Why would an airbag and a seatbelt work properly when no one was in the seat, yet the driver one did not? *tr

The red airbag light on the instrument panel IS on. I have taken the car to the infinity dealer and they say a sensor is out and would be $800 to $1000 to repair. It seems the airbag system should be warranted as long as the car is registered. The mfg book says if this light is on the airbag may inflate, not inflate when needed, just not work. I am concerned, I do not want the bag to inflate as I or my wife is driving. This not a very good safety system if can go out from just one sensor it seems it should have a redundant system for this. This is a safety issue that seems infinity should have to fix especially with the problem with airbags. I do not want my wife or I to be a statistic for a bad airbag system.

Service engine light soon came on along with several other warning lights, engine would not restart readily and then stalled again without warning. Had to have the car towed from the road for repair. I bought a 2003 infinit i35 a year ago as my first car. I have been having problems with my vehicle dying for what seems to be no reason. No warning lights would come on not even a check engine light. I was driving on the highway when it happened a week ago. While i was driving it died a total of four times. When i tried to start it back up it wouldn't turn over. It would not take a jump. No fluids were low. No cables or terminals were loose. I ended up having to get the vehicle towed. At the time it had 216,000 miles roughly. When i did research, i found that there was a recall associated with infiniti models 2003-2004 that had faulty crankshaft and camshaft position sensors. The same symptoms that i had were matching up to the those of the recall. It was happening to those models having 113,000-225,000 roughly. When i searched with the nhtsa website and infinit i found that this was not associated with my vin number. I then took it to a mechanic and found that in fact those same sensors were faulty causing the vehicle to function incorrectly. So now i have to wonder why then my 2003 infinit i35 was not recognized as being affected by my recall when i now have proof that the same sensors associated with this recall are in fact faulty.

The car had no symptoms of failure. The failure was the throttle position sensor. It fails intermittently without warning during normal driving conditions. During a failure the engine will not respond to any throttle inputs, therefore rendering the car immovable. Car must be restarted to reset throttle sensor. Has occurred in the middle of an intersection and on the highway, both seriously dangerous places to have loss of engine control. After contacting the dealership a new part was ordered, and after two weeks it arrived and works fine now. The two week notice was lack of stock for this part, which might indicate a widespread problem of this part.

The car loses power after a while and will just stop as if it ran out of gas. This has happened several times, otherwise the car is ok. I was traveling approx. 70 mph on the interstate and the vehicle "jerked", lost power and re-accelerated without losing power. The tcs off/slip and service engine soon lights all came on simultaneously. I stopped by the store and had difficulty starting the car. I immediately drove to advance auto parts to have it "diagnosed" because it was right across the street. It was diagnosed as a "cam shaft position sensor". Our mechanic recommended we contact infiniti because there was a recall for this same issue (03v455000). I contacted taylor infiniti in augusta, ga and was told by the service manager, chandra, that the recall campaign had ended. She also knew nothing about the airbag recall campaign (13v136000), and there was nothing more she could do to help me. Within a couple of days, the car began shutting off while in operation (while slowing down, stopped at red lights, in the middle of intersections, etc.). I have not driven the vehicle in 3 weeks, as it is obviously not safe to drive. I have checked several online infiniti owner forums, and there are literally thousands of people who are having this same problem. I wasn't aware that safety recalls had an "end" date. I called taylor infiniti back and was told my vin wasn't included in any of the campaigns. I feel strongly that the recall for this issue should be re-opened and include a wider range of vin numbers, if not to include all '02 i35s. I am terribly frustrated because i don't feel as if i should have to pay hundreds of dollars for repairs that are obviously related to this issue. Coincidentally, we also replaced the lower control arm on my car in december of 2012 at an out-of-pocket cost of over $800, when this issue was also the subject of a recall campaign (02v146000), which they also said my vin was not included in. I was told the car "is an '02, and these issues are sure to arise". *js

I have had two transmissions in this 2002 infiniti i35 and now may have to have the third. Summer of 2011 i experienced intermittent issues with the engine racing and the transmission apparently disengaging, with no power to the wheels. First time i took it to the dealer they couldn't detect any problems as there was no service engine soon warning on the dash board so their computer couldn't detect a problem. Happened again and the technician told me not to turn the ignition off when i got to the shop but to let the engine keep running. He drove the car back to the shop and hooked it up to the computer. The problem was diagnosed as the torque converter clutch function code along with p0720 and p1574, check engine light concer ' ip006, (failing), and i was told i had to have both a torque converter and a transmission. The price for a new one was too high and i opted for a used torque converter/transmission and now, 5/2/2012, less than a year later i am having the same problem as before. Several times this loss of power to the wheels has happened when pulling into traffic and is extremely dangerous. Another issue is the suspension and steering. I have had to replace the struts because the front end would vibrate veer left and right and lose some control over the steering when driving over rough pavement. Even after strut replacement the issue still persists. August of 2011 around the same time transmission was replaced i had to replace the radiator which burst at a seam. It was replaced before the transmission and at a different shop, and not at the dealer's shop. *js

The brake pedal and accelerator pedal are close together. With my size 12 foot, it is easy to accidentally have my shoe on both pedals. The car has enough engine power to overcome the braking system, and lead to a collision. With the abs and tcs (traction control system) on this car, i would like to see an interaction to limit power if the abs is activated. My rear tires were trying to stop the car (almost dragging) and with the car under power (both pedals depressed) the abs was activated but i was still accelerating forward.

*tr

2003 I35

Driving on highway @55mph when engine stopped functioning. Lost power steering and power brakes and careened off the road almost hitting a house. When i went to start the engine it had great difficulty ( took about 30 seconds ) when it finally started the service engine soon, tcs and slip lights were on. Took car to mechanic and was told that the crank angle sensor and cam position sensor is faulty but nissan and govt. Failed to add the proper vin numbers to the recall because this is the 30th car he's seen with the exact same problem and he knew immediately what it was when he saw the combination of indicator lights and vehicle problems.

2003 I35

*tr

2002 I35

*js

2002 I35

Traveled approx 25 miles. Was first in line to approach a red stop light. As the accelerator was let up and brakes applied, the car did not stop. As the car crossed into the intersection of on-coming traffic, i took the automatic transmission from "drive" into "neutral". The car stopped and rpms increased indicating a stuck accelerator. I tapped the accelerator pedal twice and the car went to idle. I had the car towed to the infiniti dealership who still has it and has not been able to duplicate the problem. Although nobody was hurt, if anyone would of been in the crosswalk, i would of killed them and it was a matter of a few feet from cross traffic so a very close call indeed. *tr

1) traveling at high speeds 50-60 mph for a considerable time frame, one-two hours. On a highway with stop lights-when trying to stop, my infiniti i35 (yr.2002) accelerates while i am trying to brake. The car lurches foward with the engine going from 1500 rpm to 7000 rpms. The incident repeated itself later on 8/16. We were traveling from baltimore to virgina on route 50--good road accomodating high speeds but has lights as one passes through eastern shore towns. The car was towed to infinite's nearest dealership in va beach. According to that dealer's shop, no error messages or issues were reported per their computerized testing. According to them, their road tests , two tests, a drive for 15 minutes and the other was to get the car's speed up to 80 mph on an in-shop rolling machine, revealed no errors. *ak my contacting infiniti's national consumer affairs office resulted in no tangible assistance. The dealer drove the car to baltimore, 8/20/04 and reported no problems. Interstate 95 was used (its not the same as route 50 with high speeds and frequent, quick(er) stops. The car is not working and needs to be corrected; it is dangerous. Infiniti will not proceed since computerized analysis reports no error messages. In june, 2004, we had taken the car to jba of ellicott city complaining that the car was demonstrating problems: at stop signs, on occasion, the car would not move forward, the engine would race, then the car would lunge forward. That dealership again commented that there was no problem registering on its computer testing, therefore, no problem. It seems that the firm's testing methodology isn't either comprehensive enough or limited to only computer analysis. The car has a defect and this firm can't or won't reach out of the box to try and solve it, excusing any effort on their part because their computer results disclose no "error message".
