COOLANT LEAKING INTO ENGINE, CAUSING MISFIRES AND ENGINE SERVICE LIGHT ON
Sep 22, 2025
I purchased a 2017 Lincoln MKC approximately 90 days ago and recently encountered a check engine light notification with the diagnostic code P303, indicating a misfire in cylinder three. After replacing the fuel injector on that cylinder and completing a tune-up, which included the replacement of all spark plugs and ignition coils, I consulted a new mechanic. They informed me of a potential issue related to engine block intrusion, which reportedly affected other 2.0 L engines from Ford Motor Company within the 2015-2019 model years. As a result, I have been advised to consider replacing the entire engine. Given that I acquired the vehicle as a used model with only 43,000 miles and is now out of warranty, I am facing an out-of-pocket expense of nearly $8,000.

The contact owns a 2017 Lincoln MKC. The contact stated that the check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to O’Reilly Auto Parts and was diagnosed with a misfire in cylinder #2. The vehicle was then taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed with a misfire in cylinder #3. The dealer replaced the ignition coils and the spark plugs; however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic; however, no cause for the failure was found. Additionally, the contact stated that the vehicle was experiencing excessive coolant consumption, and the contact noticed an abnormal odor coming from the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that assistance would not be provided because the vehicle was not covered under warranty. The failure mileage was approximately 190,500.

The contact owns a 2017 Lincoln MKC. The contact stated that upon starting the vehicle, the check engine warning light illuminated on the instrument panel, followed by a coolant temperature message. The vehicle was taken to a dealer, where it was diagnosed with a hairline crack in the engine. The hairline fracture led to coolant intrusion inside cylinder #2, and the vehicle was diagnosed with engine failure. Upon investigation, the contact discovered Technical Service Bulletins 19-2346 and 22-22229, which the contact linked to the failure. The contact called another dealer about the failure and was informed that there were no recalls on the vehicle related to the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but offered no assistance. The failure mileage was 98,690.

The contact owns a 2017 Lincoln MKC. The contact stated that the check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer who diagnosed that the #2 and #3 spark plugs needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, two days after the repair, the check engine warning light illuminated again, and the engine started to overheat. The contact checked to coolant level and discovered there was no coolant in the coolant reservoir. The vehicle was taken to a certified mechanic and was inspected, and it was determined that the failure was best diagnosed by the dealer. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and the contact was informed that the vehicle needed additional diagnosis for coolant intrusion to determine if the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 70,000.

The contact owns a 2017 Lincoln MKC. The contact stated that upon starting the vehicle, the vehicle was shuddering. The contact stated while driving approximately 30-35 MPH, the message "Engine Overheating" was displayed. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where the contact was informed that the coolant reservoir was empty. The mechanic added coolant to the vehicle and referred the contact to the dealer for assistance. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that there was coolant intrusion in the engine block. The dealer determined that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired due to the cost. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 89,800.

Battery drain issues - causing faulty modules on driver side door which include the safety belts modules, rear lift gate as well as black panel screen. Poor engine performance and warning lights like the check engine light come on and off intermittently. I have replaced the battery several times and having various modules problems some have come up as air bags, and ABS brakes modules. Lincoln knows about the problems and so far, is not able to fix the problems that causes the battery to drain, which causes all the faulty modules. Really don't expect anything like a recall, but this is now documented to warned others. if the modules don't work properly, the sensors will not work correctly either in the vehicles. There are over 20+ modules in the MKC that work with the sensors. Thank you for at least reading.

The battery sensor module is faulty. I have to go out every morning and jump start my car. I have replaced the battery twice withing 7 months so I know it's not the battery. When I took it to the dealer ford/lincoln dealer near me and asked about the sensor recall, they said that it was likely the cause. This way back in June and they still say the parts are on back order for over 7 months. I have full warranty on the vehicle and have to jump start it if it hasn't been drove withing 8-10 hours. Even let it run yesterday for 45 minutes so it would be okay this morning. Lights won't even come on. Had to manually unlock the doors with the key to even get the cars eat out of the car.

Recall was issued on May 31, 2023 for this problem. As of this date, Jan 19, 2024 this recall has not been completed. All I get from factory and dealers is that the part is not available. The recall says that parts ARE available. As the recall notice states, "park vehicle outside until repairs are completed". As it has been approx 8 months, this became a nuisance long ago. I would just like to know when and if this recall, repair will be made. Thank you, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Symptoms consistent with TSB 19-2346 for 2.0L EcoBoost engines: coolant in cylinders, white exhaust smoke and check engine light is on. I have to keep topping off the coolant weekly, engine light comes and goes with same errors. Went to a general mechanic who got error codes PO301-00 AND PO316-00. Currently scheduled next week to see an engine mechanic. Available for inspection upon request. Has not put us in danger yet but is of major concern due to potential for failure, so we are having it seen to ASAP. We don't have a Ford dealership so nearby to go out there with a failing car just to have them verify that yes that is the issue and yes it will be a very expensive repair we could not afford if we did it with them. Despite very low mileage it is still past warranty date, so any goodwill would have to come after we go through the trouble of bringing our vehicle in and hoping for the best. We called and they couldn't even provide any kind of ballpark likelyhood of goodwill.

Within 4 months, I’ve spent $12k on transmission replacement (refurb.) (Metallics in the fluid), Fuel injectors, etc. The check engine light is still on…Now Im told that coolant is leaking into my engine, and the engine needs replaced! (Coolant intrusion) Another $9k for parts and labor! i just paid the car off! Ive kept up with repairs and service! Ive done everything the dealer has suggested…except replace the engine! I’m still recovering from the cost of the transmission! The 2017 Lincoln MKC with a 2.0L EcoBoost engine has a known defect where coolant leaks into the engine cylinders, often causing misfires, overheating, or engine failure. This issue, linked to faulty engine block and cylinder head design, typically requires engine replacement ($5,000-$9,500). Ford issued TSB 22-2229 but no recall. A class-action lawsuit is ongoing. Check warranty status; report to NHTSA.

Vacuum pump, 2.3 ecoturbo charger not available for inspection. Dealer in ND replaced vacuum pump twice and car ran worse than when I brought it in so they then decided it was the turbocharger and replaced it. My check engine light and ABS light were on. Could not drive over 55 mph and was on highway when lost power and slowed way down significantly with traffic congested. Had to pull off to side. Thick Smoking from tailpipe they said oil got lnto the catalytic convertor it would eventually wear off and ok to drive. Took to different dealer and they replaced the vacuum pump again (this was the 3rd one)it has 73000 miles on it. I Drove for 20000 without trouble. Now I'm at dealership in TN and they are replacing the entire engine. Without any help from Lincoln and the car has 91000 miles on it

The head gasket leaked resulting in having to put in an entirely new engine. The dealer suggested that this was a known issue and that the gasket breaks in the corner. After the replacement, I was told that the manufacturer improved the gasket and I should not see this issue happen again. When the gasket blew, there was an immediate loss of power going down the expressway.

My car was vibrating and shifting weird. I recently repaired the brakes thinking that was the source of the vibration however the vibration escalated and the car shakes violently when stopped and jerk forward after releasing the brakes. My mechanic said this was a known issue with my model and pointed me to Customer Satisfaction Program 20N07. I spoke with Ford who indicated my VIN was not eligible for this CSP.

There is a design flaw in the way coolant flows around the engine block which allows coolant to leak into cylinder 3 the result of which is the mix of coolant and motor oil damages the engine with no probability of repair. The only recourse is engine replacement. A Ford service bulletin as to this issue has been issued by Ford to its Service Departments. A design change in the motor block has supposedly corrected the problem. It affects all Ecoboost 2.0 4 cylinder engines used by Ford, but may apply to other Ford 4 cylinder engines as well. The engine in my 2017 Lincoln MKC has the problem at 77K miles. At present the car is not safe to drive as the engine could seize at any time. There are several YouTube videos on the subject showing the damage to the engine due to this problem. A copy of the service report from the local Ford dealer, Chestatee Ford, Dahlonega, GA can be provided.

Engine light came on. Took it to mechanic. Was told there is a well documented mechanical issue affecting my 2017 , MKC. My vehicle is experiencing a misfire and cylinder three accompanied by signs of colon intrusion into the engine, as well as transmission slippage. I have heard these are known and widespread issues in 2015 to 2019 Lincoln MKC models equipped with the 2.0L Eco boost engine. I am aware of several technical service bulletins, including TSB 19-2346 and TBS 22-2229, that detail this defect. Numerous Lincon customers have reported identical issues at similar mileage, often requiring full engine or transmission replacement. My trusted mechanic has verified that my vehicle exhibit symptoms consistent with this engine defect.

ENGINE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
1 complaint
I own a 2017 Lincoln MKC 2.0L EcoBoost that suffered a complete engine failure caused by coolant intrusion into the combustion chambers. The vehicle began to misfire, emit thick white smoke, lose power, and quickly became almost undriveable. Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) 19-2346 (June 2019), which describes coolant entering cylinders due to a flaw in the cylinder head/block design. This failure is not the result of neglect or normal wear and tear — my vehicle has been maintained according to manufacturer recommendations. Despite this, the engine requires complete replacement at a cost of approximately $9,500. The failure occurred well before what should be the normal service life of an engine, and it matches the same defect pattern reported by many other Lincoln and Ford owners with the 2.0L EcoBoost engine in multiple model years. The coolant intrusion defect creates a serious safety hazard because it can cause sudden, unpredictable loss of engine power while driving. If the defect manifests at highway speeds, the driver may experience immediate power loss, inability to accelerate, or complete engine shutdown — increasing the risk of a collision. Ford/Lincoln have issued internal bulletins to dealers acknowledging this problem but have not initiated a public recall. Many owners have been denied coverage due to warranty expiration, despite this being a manufacturing defect. The result is that numerous vehicles with a dangerous and well-documented engine flaw remain in circulation without corrective action. I believe this defect warrants investigation as it poses both a safety risk to drivers and passengers, and a broader consumer protection concern. Premature catastrophic engine failures on relatively low-mileage vehicles undermine public trust and place owners in severe financial hardship. An NHTSA investigation could compel Ford/Lincoln to issue a recall to address this hazard before more vehicles experience unsafe sudden failure

First incident: My daughter was in the vehicle in our driveway in March 2022 and was leaving. She came running inside and told me she hit the start button and that the vehicle did not start, but started to roll down the driveway with the steering wheel locked in position. She was stepping on the brakes and the vehicle continued to roll out into the street until it finally stopped when it hit the curb across the street. She stated the brakes did not work. She hit the start button again and the vehicle started and she drove it back into our driveway to tell me about the incident and the loss of brakes and steering. Second incident: 5/9/22, my daughter was parked at the gas station with 2 friends. After putting gas in the car, she hit the start button and the car did not start, but instead started rolling forward with the steering wheel locked and no brakes. She kept pumping the brakes and nothing would stop the car. She started hitting buttons on the dashboard in an attempt to get the vehicle to stop, but it ran into the yellow bollard at the gas station and scraped the entire passenger side of the vehicle. She pressed the start button and held it down for several seconds before that made the vehicle finally stop. Her two friends corroborated that the vehicle would not stop even though she was frantically pressing the brakes. We now have approximately $4,000 worth of damage down the passenger side of the vehicle. My daughter is afraid to drive the vehicle anymore as this is the second time the vehicle failed to start, started moving, the steering wheel was locked, and the BRAKES did not work to stop the vehicle.

I WAS PULLING AWAY FROM MY HOUSE AFTER BACKING OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY, AND THE POWER STEERING PRACTICALLY FROZE. I ALMOST HIT MY OTHER CAR THAT WAS PARKED IN FRONT OF MY HOUSE. THREE WARNINGS CAME UP ON THE DASH: 1. SERVICE ADVANCETRAC, 2. STEERING ASSIST FAULT SERVICE REQUIRED, 3. HILL START ASSIST NOT AVAILABLE. I HAD IT TOWED TO MY LOCAL SERVICE STATION AND HE DIAGNOSED THAT IT WAS THE "ELECTRONICS" IN MY RACK AND PINION. HE ADVISED THAT I TAKE IT TO FORD/LINCOLN, BECAUSE IT MAY, OR SHOULD BE UNDER WARRANTY. I THEN TOWED MY CAR TO THE CLOSEST FORD DEALER THAT I WAS ABLE TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT WITH, BECAUSE ALL THE DEALERS IN QUEENS, NY ARE BACKED UP, 4-6 WEEKS. I RECEIVED AN IMMEDIATE RESPONSE: "WE FOUND THE PROBLEM. INTERNAL FAILURE WITH THE ELECTRONIC RACK AND PINION. THAT'S WHY IT IS CAUSING ALL THE WARNING LIGHTS WHILE DRIVING AND HARD STEERING. THE RACK CAN'T COMMUNICATE WITH THE VEHICLE. PARTS AND LABOR WITH AN ALIGNMENT AND DIAGNOSTIC IS $2,106 PLUS TAX. IT'S ELECTRONIC. CAN'T CONTROL AND DON'T KNOW WHAT CAUSES IT TO GO BAD. IT IS ONLY COVERED UNDER THE BASIC 3YR./36K MILE WARRANTY. IT'S AN INTERNAL ISSUE WITH THE RACK. IT'S ALL COMPLETE WITH NEW RACK AND ELECTRONIC UNIT BUILT INTO IT. I KNOW IT'S EXPENSIVE. IT'S THE SAME SET UP AS THE FORD EXPLORER. JUST DID ONE THE OTHER DAY. THE PART ALONE IS $1296.00 AND IT TAKES 2 DAYS TO GET. THEY (FORD) KNOW OF IT BUT NO RECALL. PART INCLUDES 1YR./12K WARRANTY PARTS AND LABOR." I AM GETTING THE CAR REPAIRED. I WAS TOLD IT SHOULD BE READY BY TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 15TH, 2020.

I STARTED THE VEHICLE, THE SYNC SYSTEM WENT THROUGH A RESTART, KILLING THE ENGINE AND TURNING OFF THE DASHBOARD PANELS. IT HAD HAPPENED BEFORE ON A LEVEL SURFACE, BUT THIS TIME I WAS ON A 10-15% GRADE. I STOPPED AGAIN, TURNED THE VEHICLE OFF AND RETURNED ABOUT 15 MINUTES LATER. I WAS ON A SLIGHT HILL, WITH THE ELEVATION LOWER IN FRONT OF THE VEHICLE. I STARTED THE CAR AND STEPPED COMPLETELY OUT WITHIN 10-15 SECONDS. I STEPPED OUTSIDE THE VEHICLE, WHICH HAD BEEN RUNNING FOR 10-15 SECONDS. THE HATCH WAS OPEN AND TWO FRIENDS BEHIND COULD CLEARLY SEE THROUGH THE VEHICLE, TO KNOW THAT I DIDN'T TOUCH THE PUSH BUTTON TRANSMISSION. THE VEHICLE STARTED ROLLING DOWN THE HILL. I JUMPED IN, BUT THE BRAKES DIDN'T WORK AND THE INSTRUMENT PANEL WAS DARK. IT STOPPED ROLLING WHEN IT COLLIDED AGAINST A PARKED TRUCK APPROXIMATELY 50 FEET IN FRONT. THE ENGINE WAS OFF WHEN IT STOPPED. I THINK THE RECYCLE OF THE SYNC SYSTEM CAUSED AN INTERMITTENT MALFUNCTION OF THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM, CAUSING THE BRAKES, STEERING AND PUSHBUTTON TRANSMISSION TO BECOME NON-OPERABLE. THIS RESULTED IN DAMAGE OF $8568 TO MY MKC AND OF $1512 TO THE PARKED TRUCK. SINCE THIS IS AN INTERMITTENT INCIDENT, IT CAN'T BE REPLICATED AT A DEALER EVEN IF IT HAPPENED, IT WOULD BE ON A LEVEL SURFACE AND WOULD NOT ROLL. I HAVE DRIVEN THE VEHICLE FOR AN ADDITIONAL 7 MONTHS AND 8,819 MILES. THE CURRENT MILEAGE IS 27,474. DURING THAT TIME, THE VEHICLE HAS STARTED AND THEN GONE THROUGH AN ELECTRICAL RECYCLE WHICH CAUSED THE ENGINE TO TURN OFF AT LEAST 5 TIMES. TWO OF THOSE TIMES WERE ON A FLAT SURFACE. I RAN OVER A COONCRETE CURB A MONTH AGO. TONIGHT IT HAPPENED IN MY DRIVEWAY & RAN UP ONTO MY FRONT PORCH, WHICH HAS A STEP UP OF ABOUT 6 INCHES. I CALLED LINCOLN CONCIERGE TO REPORT THE 2ND INCIDENT. THEY TOLD ME THAT THEY COULD DO NOTHING UNTIL THE PROBLEM WAS RECREATED IN A GARAGE - OR IT KILLS OR INJURES SOMEONE.

CAR WAS IN DRIVEWAY. AUTO STOP FEATURE WAS ON. FOOT WAS ON BRAKE, ENGINE STOPPED IDLING. AS I LIFTED MY FOOT OFF THE BRAKE, THE ENGINE RESTARTED AND THE A/C COMPRESSOR ENGAGED AT THE SAME TIME. THE CAR LUNGED FORWARD AND HIT A BRICK COLUMN CAUSING OVER $2000 IN DAMAGE.CAR WAS SERVICED AT DEALER FOR THIS PROBLEM. I WAS TOLD THERE IS NO RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM AND THE CAR DID NOT "THROW ANY CODES". PROBLEM COULD NOT BE REPLICATED. NOTHING WAS DONE TO THE CAR BY THE DEALER FOR THIS PROBLEM.

I RECENTLY LEASED A FORD MKC. IT CAME EQUIPPED WITH SIDE VIEW MIRRORS THAT WOULD AUTOMATICALLY FOLD IN WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS CLOSE ENOUGH TO AN OBJECT WHERE YOU COULD GET CLOSER FOR CONVIENENCE. A GOOD EXAMPLE IS WHEN YOU GO THROUGH A CAR WASH AND THE SIDE MIRRORS FORD IN SO THEY DO OT GET DAMAGED DURING THE CAR WASH. IF A PERSON FORGETS TO PRESS THE BOTTON TO HAVE THE MIRRORS SWING BACK OUT SO A PERSON CAN DRIVE SAFELY THAT DOES NOT OCCUR AUTOMATICALLY. IN ESSENSE THOSE MIRRORS ARE CLOSED AND I COULD BE DOING 55 AND NOT HAVE ACCESS TO THE SIDE MIRRORS IF I FORGOT. I BELIEVE THEY SHOULD AUTOMATICALLY OPEN BACK UP WHEN THE VEHICLE GETS TO A SPECIFIC SPEED LIKE 20-25 MILES AN HOUR. I HAD A BMW THAT HAD THE SAME O[PTIOON ONLY WHEN IT GOT TO 20 MILES AN HOUR IT AUTOMATICALLY PUT THE SIDEVIEW MIRRORS WHERE THEY NEEDED TO GO. BIG SAFETY ISSUE

THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS ON THE LINCOLN MKC MALFUNCTION IN THE RAIN. I EXPERIENCED SEVERAL INSTANCES WHERE, UNDER FLOOD ADVISORY CONDITIONS, THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS DID NOT WORK. I TURNED THE CAR ON AND OFF SEVERAL TIMES. I CHANGE THE WIPER AUTOMATION SETTINGS SEVERAL TIMES AND STILL THE WIPERS WOULD NOT WORK. I BELIEVE THIS IS A VERY HAZARDOUS ISSUE FOR ANYONE DRIVING A 2017 LINCOLN MKC AND DO NOT BELIEVE IT SHOULD BE TAKEN LIGHTLY UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES WHEN LIVES ARE AT HAND. IN THE ABOVE SET INSTANCE I WAS DRIVING DURING THE DAY WITH RAIN SLEET AND SNOW UNDER FLOOD ADVISORY CONDITIONS.

THE DECORATIVE SILVER STRIPS ON THE DASHBOARD UNDERNEATH BOTH OF THE DASH AIR VENTS CAUSES A MAJOR REFLECTION IN BOTH THE DRIVER'S AND PASSENGER SIDE VIEW MIRRORS WHEN DRIVING IN BRIGHT SUNLIGHT. THIS IS A MAJOR DISTRACTION AND IN TRAFFIC COULD CAUSE YOU TO MISS SEEING A VEHICLE BESIDE YOU. THESE STRIPS NEED TO BE REPLACED WITH THE FAUX WOOD LOOK ON SOME OF THE MKC MODELS. CAN'T BELIEVE THEY NEVER NOTICED THIS IN THE DESIGN PROCESS. IS NOTICABLE WHEN PARKED OR IN MOTION. HAPPENS EVERYDAY IF THE SUN IS SHINING
