To Whom It May Concern: I am writing to formally request the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s assistance regarding a critical safety defect in my 2015 Mercedes‑Benz GL 450 (M278 engine). I purchased this vehicle in October 2024 with 76,000 miles, and it now has about 87,000 miles. Alarmingly, I recently received a quote for $13,000 to repair a camshaft failure and extensive electrical damage. I was unaware of these issues when I purchased this car. I bought it under the illusion that it would be a safe vehicle for me and my children. As a single parent and teacher I invested in this vehicle what I could afford and felt I had purchased a safe, reliable vehicle. I am devasted to have a proposal for repairs in excess of $13,000 from a Mercedes dealership who diagnosed the car. This caused me to do some research and I found the GL450 has a known and widespread defect. I also found, that this causes the cam shaft to need to be repaired and that this is not normal wear-and-tear—it is a systemic design vulnerability common across GL450 models. This can result in the engine seizing from what I was told and that directly poses a substantial risk when driving. From what I found this is a common issue with this car and I did not know that when I purchased it. This is a design flaw, not a misuse of the vehicle. Finally, a $13,000 repair to make this car safe and road ready is astronomical and is not aligned with a normal maintenance cost- manufacturer accountability is warranted here. I respectfully request that the NHTSA: Investigate whether a safety recall or extended warranty program is appropriate for this known defect in the GL450. Require Mercedes‑Benz to provide a comprehensive repair solution for me and repair this defect in my car's engine under the manufacturer's expense. The contact owns 2015 Mercedes-Benz GL450. The contact stated that the check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where DTC code: P060A00 was retrieved. The dealer determined that the solenoid valve had failed and needed to be replaced. The contact related the failure to TSB Number: 37 13 17 2029027/8. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 119,000.

My 2015 GL550 has 90k miles on it and is city driven, on 09/11/2023 when I was trying to pull out onto a main rd my suv hesitated and the check engine light came on, luckily traffic wasn’t heavy at the time so I wasn’t in any accidents. I called and was able to get my suv into my local Mercedes dealership for an inspection. When the suv was dropped off the check engine light had gone off but when the service center pulled up the codes it showed both turbos were bad and have to be replaced. This isn’t something that should happen to a vehicle that is regularly serviced only at Mercedes service centers, isn’t 10years old yet, never wrecked, and has less then 100k miles on it. If this had happened with heavy traffic or any other situation it could have caused a serious wreck. My suv is currently at the dealership having both turbochargers replaced at a cost of $12,000 out of pocket. I feel that Mercedes needs to look into the turbochargers used in their vehicles.

Upon receipt of vehicle, when the weather was nice, a rattle in the engine compartment appeared to take place intermittently. Upon diagnosis by a dealership, intermittent was confirmed to take place on a cold start, and not intermittently. Upon further research, it was found the rattle is related to a manufacturer's defect with the timing chain tensioner(s) and their interaction with the valves. My safety was put at risk substantially. I live in the cold upper midwest. Every start of the vehicle is a cold start, and if I risk damaging my engine at any given hour, during the dead of winter, with little to no available funds, I am at risk of hypothermia, starvation, even death. The problem, as noted in paragraph one has been reproduced by a dealer. The vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer in full, but the issue is known by Daimler since 2013 for certain. No warning lamps or messages are associated with the issue. The only symptom is the rattle in the engine compartment, and when appropriate tension with the timing chain is obtained, the rattle immediately goes away.

There are many models of the gl550 ranging from 2012-2015, where the second row driver side seats get stuck in a downward position. Recently it happened to me and another gl550 was in the shop at Mercedes North Houston for repair for the same issue. These are very common in this make and model and something needs to be addressed concerning the matter.

TRIED TO INSTALL CHILD SAFETY SEATS IN 2ND ROW SEATS. THE 2ND ROW HEADRESTS PREVENT THE PROPER INSTALLATION OF THE CHILD SAFETY SEATS. My 2015 Mercedes-Benz GL63 AMG has suffered two separate ECU failures caused by oil migrating through the engine wiring harness. The first failure occurred at ~42,600 miles in 2020, and the second at ~59,000 miles in 2023. Both times, the vehicle developed misfires, check-engine warnings, and drivability issues that could have led to stalling at highway speeds. On both occasions, the vehicle has been completely disabled. Repairs required replacement of the wiring harness, ECU, sensors, and fuse box, costing over $5,600. This is a hidden, recurring defect that poses a safety risk and financial burden. The vehicle does not feel safe or reliable to drive, and dealer support and guidance is non-existent. I have been afraid to drive to the point that it has only accumulated 3,000 additional miles in the last two years.

THE VEHICLE WAS PUSHED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD BY THE CONTACT AND PASSENGER. THE CONTACT ATTEMPTED TO RESTART THE VEHICLE, BUT IT FAILED TO START. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO MERCEDES-BENZ OF ARCADIA (101 N SANTA ANITA AVE, ARCADIA, CA 91006, (626) 701-8904) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT A LOOSE SCREW WAS NOT FASTENED BY THE MANUFACTURER AND AN UNKNOWN WIRE WAS DETACHED, WHICH CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO STALL. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND DID NOT ASSIST. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 25,000.

The fixed portion of the Panorama Sunroof exploded while driving on the highway at 65mph in light traffic and temperatures were in the mid 40's. Glass shards fell on the passengers, including three young children under the age of 5. Repairs are being arranged by customer pay and insurance. Manufacture denies fault.

SAME ISSUE AS RECALL CAMPAIGN 2017020016 LAUNCH. THE LATCH SECURING THE THE CENTER CONSOLE DOORS MIGHT NOT MEET THE REQUIREMENTS OF FMVSS 201. THE SAME BASIC DESIGN OF THE RECALLED 2017 GLS CLASS SUV CENTER CONSOLE HAS BEEN IN USE IN OTHER GL AND GLS MODELS FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS.

MY CAR HAS AN ONGOING PROBLEM WITH THE HVAC SYSTEM. IT GENERATES A MOLD AND MILDEW SMELL WHILE USING THE AC AND HEAT. MERCEDES SAYS THEY NO OF THIS ISSUE BUT HAVE NO PERMANENT FIX. THE SMELL IS SO BAD THAT IT IS ALMOST UN-DRIVABLE. MERCEDES DEALERSHIPS HAVE BULLETINS THAT DENOTE THE ISSUE IS KNOWN, BUT THEIR WORK AROUND ONLY TEMPORARILY IMPROVES THE SMELL. THERE IS AN OBVIOUS ENGINEERING ISSUE WITH THE HVAC SYSTEM THAT IS UNHEALTHY. THERE IS APPARENTLY THAT FORMS AROUND THE MOLD AROUND THE AC EVAPORATOR. MERCEDES HAS AN INTERNAL ALERT # TSB LI83-30-P-059119. THIS IS NOT A PERMANENT FIX AND ONLY IMPROVED THE SMELL FOR 3-4 WEEKS AND TOOK OVER TWO DAYS TO IMPLEMENT. THE SMELL OCCURS ALL THE TIME WHEN EITHER THE AC OR HEATER IS ON. THIS STARTED AT 2200 MILES AND CONTINUES TODAY (I HAVE 17K MILES NOW).

GL 450 WITH VIN [XXX] EXPERIENCED EXACT PROBLEM DEFINED BY NHTSA RECALL # 18V272 IN MAY 2018 (2 OR 3 WEEKS PRIOR TO RECEIVING RECALL NOTICE FROM MERCEDES-BENZ USA). DEALERSHIP, MERCEDES-BENZ OF MIDLOTHIAN VIRGINIA, PERFORMED REPAIR WORK REQUIRED (BASED URGENT NEED FROM MIL SAYING "DO NOT DRIVE VEHICLE. MB MIDLOTHIAN REPAIRED THE ACTIVE SUSPENSION SYSTEM BY REPLACING THE "SEALING CAP" ON THE "ACS OIL RESERVOIR" - THE EXACT REPAIR SPECIFIED IN THE RECALL. I WAS CHARGED IN EXCESS OF $400 FOR THIS REPAIR AS THE DEALERSHIP "HAD NOT YET RECEIVED OFFICIAL NOTICE THAT THE RECALL WOULD INCLUDE (MY) VEHICLE." UPON RECEIVING THE OFFICIAL RECALL LETTER IN JUNE 2018, I CONTACTED MERCEDES-BENZ USA. MB-USA, AGAIN, TOLD ME "NO", THE DEALERSHIP MUST INITIATE THE PROCESS AND PROVIDE REIMBURSEMENT. MB-USA REP SAID THAT THE DEALERSHIP SHOULD REIMBURSE ME SINCE THE WORK CONDUCTED WAS NOW A RECALL. WHILE THE VEHICLE IS TURNED ON BUT STATIONARY (E.G. STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT IN LIGHT TRAFFIC) I BEGAN TO SMELL DIESEL EXHAUST IN THE CABIN OF THE VEHICLE. THE ODOR WAS VERY STRONG AND I HAD TO LOWER THE WINDOWS IN ORDER TO BREATHE. THE MECHANIC INFORMED ME THAT THERE WAS AN OIL LEAK NEAR THE TURBO. I HAD TO REPLACE THE FUEL INJECTOR AND LEAK LINE, IN ADDITION TO ALL PIPE SEALS AT TURBO.

A BLANKET OF SNOW/ICE FORMED ON MY ROOF DURING THE MORNING. IT WAS NOT REMOVABLE DUE TO FREEZING AND BONDING TO THE ROOF. AS THE CAR HEATED UP INSIDE, THAT BLANKET BECAME LOOSE. WHEN I HIT MY BRAKES ON THE ROAD, THE BLANKET CAME DOWN THE FRONT WINDSHIELD BLOCKING MY VIEW OF THE ROAD. THE WIPERS STOPPED AND WOULD NOT WORK BECAUSE WHEN THEY DO NOT RETURN TO THE PARK POSITION, THEY DO NOT REPEAT THEIR WIPING MOTION. ALSO, THE LIP AT THE REAR OF THE HOOD CAUGHT AND KEPT THE BLANKET OF SNOW IN PLACE AS I BROUGHT THE CAR TO A STOP. MORE CONCRETELY, THE WIPERS ARE FLIMSY RUBBER AND DO NOT WIPE IF ANY OBSTRUCTION PREVENTS THEM FROM COMING TO THEIR DOWNWARD POSITION AT THE BASE OF THE WINDSHIELD. TURNING THE WIPER ON-OFF SWITCH HAS NO EFFECT. THIS PROBLEM CAN CAUSE CRASHES WHEN THE DRIVER'S VIEW IS OBSTRUCTED AND THE WIPERS DO NOT REMOVE THE OBSTRUCTION. I HAD TO EXIT THE CAR IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD AND WIPE THE SNOW AWAY WITH MY HAND AS CARS WERE GOING PAST ME SPLASHING ME. I ALSO NOTICED THAT BOTH FRONT WIPERS WERE CAKED WITH ICE. THIS MEANS THAT WHEN I REMOVED THE SNOW FROM THE WINDSHIELD, THE WIPERS ONLY SMEARED ICE AND SALT ALL OVER THE WINDSHIELD AND I COULD NOT SEE THE ROAD CLEARLY. THE FIX IS EASY AS TO STALLED WIPERS. THE SYSTEM MUST BE REPROGRAMMED SO THE WIPERS CONTINUE TO WIPE EVEN IF THE WIPERS DO NOT RETURN TO THE PARK POSITION (BECAUSE OF ACCUMULATED SNOW, FOR EXAMPLE). AS TO ICED-OVER WIPERS, THE MANUFACTURER MUST INSTALL HEATING ELEMENTS IN THE BASE OF THE WINDSHIELD OR INSIDE THE WIPERS OR PROVIDE FOR DUCTED HEAT (FROM THE MOTOR). I AM WRITING THIS REPORT BECAUSE THE CAR IS AN ALL WHEEL DRIVE DIESEL TRUCK INTENDED FOR HEAVY DUTY USE IN ALL ENVIRONMENTS AROUND THE GLOBE. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2015 MERCEDES-BENZ GL350W. WHILE DRIVING 70 MPH, THE CONTACT'S HUSBAND ENGAGED THE CRUISE CONTROL. WHEN THE DRIVER TAPPED THE BRAKE PEDAL TO DEACTIVATE THE CRUISE CONTROL, THE BRAKE PEDAL TRAVELED TO THE FLOORBOARD AND THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED. THE SPEEDOMETER WENT TO ZERO. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THEY WERE SAFELY ABLE TO PULL OVER ONTO THE SHOULDER. WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS TURNED OFF AND RESTARTED, IT RESUMED NORMAL OPERATION AND THE CONTACT'S HUSBAND WAS ABLE TO DRIVE OFF SLOWLY. THERE WERE NO WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED. On Mercedes GL350, the trunk/ hatch door will not open from outside. It just stopped working. Therefore, I tried to open it from inside, but there is no manual latch inside to open the trunk/ hatch door. It is a safety issue. The dealer, Mercedes Benz of Richmond, 8225 West Broad Street, charged $235 to open the hatch door. The dealership billed total $1322.48 (after 10% discount $1219.66) to replace the latch and its motor. Kindly help the GL350 owner to have latch installed inside open the door in case of emergency.

The rubber sealing around the lift gate failed on the vehicle and water seeped inside the vehicle and entire bottom of the vehicle underneath the floor board thereby damaging the electronic components, engine wire harness and headliner thereby rendering the vehicle was beyond repair. This issue led to mold to grow on the roof liner inside and on the seats which caused breathing issues for me and my family. This put our safety at risk! After talking the vehicle to authorized Mercedes Benz dealer in San Jose CA I was told that this is a known defect with the vehicle about which Mercedes Benz Inc is well aware for years and has not fixed it or recalled vehicles having this safety issue. I had purchased this vehicle from Mercedes Benz of Pleasanton on 6/10/2015 as Certified Pre Owned (CPO) but I was not informed that this safety issue existed. I was informed by Mercedes Benz of San Jose that the vehicle could not be repaired as mold would pose a health hazard for the occupants and the vehicle was deemed to be beyond repair and totaled. I had also purchased extended warranty at the time of purchase in 2015 but the dealership did not honor it for repairs.

ON 12/30/2017 WE PURCHASED A MERCEDES-BENZ CERTIFIED PRE-OWNED 'CPO' VEHICLE FROM MERCEDES BENZ OF NORTH PALM BEACH. WE ARRIVED AT THE DEALERSHIP IN THE AFTERNOON SENT BY MERCEDES BENZ OF WEST PALM BEACH THEIR AFFILIATED DEALERSHIP FOR THE SPECIFIC VEHICLE WE PURCHASED. WHEN WE ARRIVED AT THE DEALERSHIP TO VIEW THE VEHICLE, IT WAS NOT DETAILED FROM THE PREVIOUS OWNER. ON THE TEST DRIVE WITH OUR SALES PERSON I NOTED UNUSUAL NOISES AND RIDE CONDITIONS IN THE VEHICLE. THE SALESPERSON ASSURED US THAT IT IS A CPO VEHICLE WITH AN UNLIMITED MILEAGE WARRANTY BACKING UP BUMPER TO BUMPER FACTORY WARRANTY. HE GAVE US AN IMPLIED ORAL WARRANTY THAT THE VEHICLE WOULD BE REPAIRED TO OUR SATISFACTION - 'NOT TO WORRY'!
