Fuel smell in the engine compartment and visible leaking fuel on the lower hoses per NHTSA Campaign Number 18V837000. I previously complained about this in April 2025 (ID 11669847). Dealer inspected in April 2025 and replaced the lower hose, but I still would smell fuel. After a lot of my own troubleshooting over the last six months, I have determined that when the car has sat un-used for over 24 hours, the rubber fuel lines shrink just enough that the next time the fuel system is primed (pre-start routine when you unlock the car, or start the car), a small amount of fuel leaks out at the connection. If the car sits for weeks and then you start it up, fuel will visibly leak out of the rubber connection (I have video). Once the rubber line swells up again due to the fuel in the line, it will slow the leak. So, if you use the car daily, you will be less likely to notice a leak. If you use the car infrequently, you will be more likely to have a leak.

There was a fuel smell emanating from the engine compartment during the vehicle pre-start routine (fuel pump priming). The dealership determined this to be a leak in the lower fuel hose to fuel line of the service connection per NHTSA Campaign Number 18V837000, however they refused to cover the cost of the repair because the recall work was previously completed in 2019. Corporate Mercedes Benz USA also refused to extend any goodwill toward this repair despite acknowledging it is the recall issue because the work was done once and is now considered out of warranty. Recall 18V-837 only requires authorized dealer to inspect and replace as necessary, so I don't know if the previously completed recall work on my van actually resulted in replaced parts or not (I bought this van used after the recall work order was completed). This is a health and safety hazard and Mercedes should have a permanent fix, not give us a part that needs regular expensive maintenance.

The fuel line is leaking again. I have had this replaced three times already. Once under warranty and twice out-of-pocket. Why wasn't the MY2016 included in the recall? The raw fuel smell permeates the cabin and is nauseating. This is a safety issue were something needs to be done for a permanent fix before someone dies in a fiery death.

New heavy fuel odor in cab. I wonder how much fuel I am leaking. Where is the fuel that is being leaked out go? On a hot exaust system? Fuel line was replaced once by MB dealer. I think they used the same defective fuel line to replace the first one. One of the last times the van was in at the dealer they "didn't have time" to check the fuel line complaint. And there is no mention of my request in the service writers document that says I wanted it checked out.

THE FIELD OF VIEW IN THE SIDE MIRRORS, ESPECIALLY THE PASSENGER SIDE, IS INADEQUATE AND DANGEROUS. THE MIRRORS NEED TO BE LARGER WITH A WIDER ANGLE OF VIEW. THERE IS A HUGE BLIND SPOT ON THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE METRIS. I'VE READ ABOUT OWNERS SOURCING WIDER ANGLE CONVEX MIRRORS FROM EUROPEAN VERSIONS OF THE METRIS AND REPLACING THE MIRRORS ON 2016 METRIS VANS.

FIRST OFF, I HAVE ONLY HAD THIS CAR FOR APPROXIMATELY 1 WEEK AND SPENT CONSIDERABLE TIME DRIVING IN A LARGE METROPOLITAN AREA AS WELL AS ON THE INTERSTATE WITH THE VEHICLE IN THIS FIRST WEEK (1200 MILES IN TOTAL). I HAVE ADJUSTED THE SIDE MIRRORS AS WIDE AS THEY ARE CAPABLE OF ADJUSTING AND STILL, AN ENORMOUS BLIND SPOT REMAINS FOR THE DRIVER THAT IS BOTH DANGEROUS TO MYSELF AND DRIVERS AROUND ME. ON TWO OCCASIONS THIS WEEK, ONE (TODAY) THAT WAS THE WORST YET, I WAS CHANGING LANES AND AFTER CHECKING THE SIDE MIRRORS AND SEEING ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, I CAME EXTREMELY CLOSE TO HITTING A SEDAN THAT WAS DRIVING IN MY BLIND SPOT. FORTUNATELY, THE OTHER DRIVER WAS PAYING ATTENTION AND ABLE TO SWERVE AWAY FROM MY VEHICLE TO AVOID BEING HIT. THIS PARTICULAR VEHICLE IS THE CARGO VERSION WITH A BULKHEAD INSTALLED WHICH RENDERS THE REARVIEW MIRROR USELESS AND NO ABILITY TO LOOK OVER YOUR SHOULD OUT A REAR WINDOW TO CHECK FOR VEHICLES. I HAVE JUST ORDERED EXTRA CLIP ON MIRRORS FROM AMAZON TO MAKE THE VEHICLE AT LEAST OPERATIONAL BUT IN MY OPINION BEING FORCED TO ALTER SOMETHING SUCH AS SIDE MIRRORS TO MAKE THE VEHICLE REASONABLY SAFE TO OPERATE IS UNACCEPTABLE FROM ANY MANUFACTURER, LET ALONE MERCEDES-BENZ WHO CLAIMS SUCH A HIGH STANDARD OF SAFETY ON THEIR VEHICLES. AFTER DOING A LITTLE MORE INVESTIGATION, THIS IS CLEARLY A KNOWN ISSUE EXPERIENCED BY A LOT OF PEOPLE WHO OPERATE THIS VEHICLE (I.E. EVER SINCE WE GOT THIS VEHICLE WE COMPLAINED THAT THE MIRROR IS TOO SMALL, WHICH MAKES IT EXTREMELY HARD TO MAKE TURNS. I TRIED TO SEARCH ONLINE, AND RIGHT AWAY FOUND A METRIS FORUM WITH MANY MANY POSTS ABOUT THIS SAME ISSUE. THE POSTERS WERE WRITING ABOUT CONTACTING MERCEDES, AND THE DEALERS DIDNT EVEN KNOW ABOUT IT, OR THE ONES WHO DID SAID THAT THE 2017 MODELS WERE INDEED IMPROVED. I AM NOW TRYING TO GET A REPLACEMENT FOR MY VAN, AND THE DEALERS ARE NOT HELPFUL AT ALL

A safety recall #22V482 was issued on this vehicle on 9/9/2022. It's now been nearly 18 months and the manufacturer has yet to issue a remedy or mark the recall "open" so we can get it addressed. The is effecting both the safety of operation, causing confusion over load ratings, and possibly effecting resell as this information is public. Please get this recall enforced.

There was a tire recall for my van for incorrect tire load which causes exceeding wear and dangerous tire conditions. I keep getting my tires changed every year cause they wear down so fast. Mercedes and the dealership won’t reimburse me because it is still in a pending status which has been ongoing now for 2 years!!!

My complaint is about the open recall on my vehicle, its been more than a year now and still there is no resolution in sight, due to the open recall I am unable to use my vehicle for my business and it's impacting me financially. On contacting several mercedes dealership, I am not getting any answers on when they will be able to fix the problem and remove the recall. NHTSA Recall Number 22V482 Recall Incomplete, remedy not yet available for a very long time. While we can still operate the vehicle physically, it would be out of compliance to share the vehicle within the company while an active recall is not addressed by manufacture.

I am trying to get a safety recall handled, that states the possibility of crash if not taken care of. Mercedes still says a recall still pending. This was reported in September of 2022, and seems like an easy recall to handle. I am hoping to get this handled so I feel safe driving with my family in the van.

The contact owns a 2016 Mercedes-Benz Metris. The contact stated that while driving at 40 MPH, the steering wheel seized, and the vehicle became difficult to maneuver. The contact stated that the failure occurred immediately after driving over a speed bump, and the message "Power Steering Assist Malfunction" was displayed. The contact pulled over into a parking lot, and the vehicle was towed to a body shop to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the power steering wire had overheated, causing a failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 17V595000 (Steering); however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. I was driving down a smooth straight highway at 60 mph when the power steering completely failed. After that the van was nearly impossible to turn even a slight amount. If the road had been a bunch of curves I wouldn't have been able to make it to a safe place to pull over. Mercedes had recall campaign #17V595000 that addressed this problem but when I called them they said there are no active recalls for my VIN number. This is a very dangerous failure and I hope you can look into it. Also the van only has 60,000 miles on it. Thanks

The aluminum bolts that hold the power steer motor failed: one bolt was sheered off, one was completely missing, and another was completely unthreaded. Apparently, this is a known recall in some states but not WA: [XXX] I'm unclear why my WA-based aluminum bolts were not a part of the recall and replacement with steel bolts... During the failure the "Power Steering Assist" message was displayed. The contact stated that the failure occurred immediately after driving over a metal gutter in the road. 2016 Metris Engine M274 Check engine light, P052E71 Crankcase ventilation valve- Oil leakage- safety is compromised as this damage causes engine failure. The dealer has confirmed multiple oil leaks and other parts and service is required at extensive cost to me. This is the same damage and failure that passenger models with the M274 engine have an extended warranty available to them- my PASSENGER Metris with the exact same engine is excluded from this extended warranty.

position sensor for intake camshaft had a malfunction. Position of intake camshaft implausible. Intake camshaft pick up wheel was not in sync with timing. Antique camshaft was out of sync by 180°. This caused a loss of power and engine functionality while underway.

It has been two years after posting an issue with engine light on indicating the error code p052e which is a known problem on many models mercedes has. This metris van is not a passenger van but a commercial van. It has however the SAME engine and SAME error code as all the models mercedes having this engine. It is stated that it is under warranty by mercedes up to 150k, with the exception of the commercial van. This is ludicrous and a failure to correct a known defect and expecting the customer to pay the bill. It is also disturbing that the NHTSA does not communicate to the complaint or direct mercedes to FIX the problem. What happened to Quality and Customer care?

The Crankcase ventilation valve called (Crankcase Rebreather)comes with a defect making engine light to come on after about an average of 50.000 miles, with a code p052e, preventing passing state vehicle inspection. Feedback from many Metris ownership highlights exact same challenge with engine light turned on at all times. But dealership is charging up to 3.000 dollars to remove their own faulty designed part.

there is couple knocking sound and noises from the engine and vehicle shaking intermittently and lack of power after engine knocking sound. smell gas leaking and dealer did Fuel hose performed inspection found lower fuel hose from tank to high pressure pump leaking causing fuel leaks. replace fuel hose and clamps.

How does the digital display suddenly disappear from your dashboard? Mercedes has lost its respect for being a High Quality brand. Too many recalls,. Too many issues that vehicles less costly never have such as 1. Out of alignment at 0 mileage resulting in worn out tires at 12k miles. Realignment that was useless at mb specs resulting in third set of tires. 2. Pcv regulator valve triggers engine code p052e which means a $3000 repair bill that's not covered on commercial vans but covered on passenger vans with the same engine. 3. Digital display on dashboard gone. Yet cars in the 60's with digital screens still working. Thanks Mercedes for the Quality and commitment you have to your customers.

BATTERY CAUGHT FIRE AND MELTED DOWN. VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN FOR ABOUT 2.5-3HRS ON 12/26 AND THEN PARKED FOR 2 HRS, WHEN I WENT TO START VEHICLE IT WAS TOTALLY DEAD, ALL ELECTRONICS BLACK AND CAR WOULD NOT TURN OVER, I THEN NOTICES A SMALL AMOUNT OF SMOKE COMING FROM PASSENGER SEAT WHERE BATTERY IS STORED. I EXITED THE VEHICLE THINKING IT WAS JUST A SMALL SHORT AND WOULD HAVE IT TOWED. I THEN NOTICED SMOKE BILLOWING OUT OF VEHICLE SO CALLED 911 AND FIRE DEPT CAME OUT, BATTERY WAS LITERALLY MELTING, THE FIREMEN WERE ABLE TO DISCCONECT BATTERY AND STOP THE MELTDOWN PREVENTING THE CAR FROM GOING UP IN FLAMES, I CAN ONLY IMAGINE WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED WHILE DRIVING.

I HAVE A 2016 METRIS PASSENGER VAN WITH 14000 MILES THAT THE MECHANICAL/ANALOG SPEEDOMETER SHOWS INCORRECT SPEED SOMETIMES. IT ONLY HAPPENS AFTER THE VAN HAS BEEN TRAVELING WITH SPEEDS OVER 60 MPH + I NOTICE THE SPEEDOMETER SHOWING ABOUT A 20 MPH SLOWER SPEED, THEN OVER A FEW MIN. THE SPEED SLOWLY KEEPS DROPPING UNTIL 0 MPH. THE TOTAL TIME TO 0 MPH IS ABOUT 15 MIN. AFTER COMING TO A COMPLETE STOP THE SPEEDOMETER FUNCTIONS PROPERLY. ONLY THE MECHANICAL SPEEDOMETER IS AFFECTED, THE DIGITAL DISPLAYS CORRECT SPEED. THIS HAS HAPPENED 10 TIMES THAT I KNOW OF.

THE REARVIEW CAMERA FROZE WHILE I WAS BACKING UP. BY "FROZE" I MEANT THE PICTURE BECAME STATIC WHILE THE VAN WAS MOVING BACK. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS BECAUSE IT WILL MISLEAD THE DRIVER ON WHAT'S OR WHAT'S NOT ON THE PATH OF MOVING DIRECTION. THE ISSUE PERSIST WHEN I MOVED THE CAR BACK AND FORTH. IT WENT AWAY AFTER PARKING THE VAN IN GARAGE FOR A FEW HOURS. I AM VERY CONCERNED THAT IT MAY HAPPEN AGAIN AND MAY CAUSE SERIOUS ACCIDENCE.

Code P052E-71 Valve for crankcase ventilation has a malfunction Code P06DA-00 Actuation of the valve in the combustion engine has an electrical fault or open circuit. These codes have been reported on too many times on forums to not have these issues recalled and fixed and paid for by Mercedes. This expensive problem should not have occurred with such little mileage and have to be fixed by the consumer

CHECK ENGINE LIGHT checked and diagnostic code P052E71 showed that the Valve for Crankcase Ventilation has a malfunction. The actuator is blocked, P06DA00 the Actuation of the valve of the oil pump in the combustion engine has an electrical fault or open circuit. The problem is prolific on the Metris vans and the repair costs extremely high for such a lemon sensor and can cause catastrophic failure and damage to the engine.

CHECK engine Light CEL Code P052E suddenly turned on in the winter about 1 1/2 year ago, but turned off itself after a month. The Check Engine Light CEL code p052e turned on suddenly in June 2024 and stays on still. Emailed and complaint to Mercedes Benz USA and received no answer. MERCEDES BENZ USA given recall and Emission extended warranty on this code to all C, E, G, , SLC And SLK Class passenger cars with 2.0 Engine on August 25, 2023, but excluded my passenger van model, Metris, which has the same code and is a common problem. This is not right and not fair. Please advise and help.

The contact shifted into neutral and restarted the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the Collision Prevention Assist system was reset however, the failure persisted. The manufacturer was made of the failure; however, no assistance was provided. The approximate failure mileage was 20,000.

The wiring harness for the seatbelt pretensioner wore through in its normal factory installed location and shorted out, causing the air bag light to come on. No modifications have ever been done to the vehicle to disturb this path and causing wire chafing. It is highly doubtful the pretensioner would have worked either, as 3 out of the 4 wires had their insulation worn through. This was diagnosed by the dealership and video of the issue was provided at https://r7788463.m.reyrey.net/app/?ref=aO9XDMndQtSq554Czq1dQg%3D%3D&sys=e1b63ec6-8626-424a-b7a7-80e9ade1db58 I have had this fixed, but the text messages with the dealership lead me to believe that this is not the first time they have seen and repaired the issue.

Mercedes knew in 2018 there was a problem with weighing loading. On Sept 7 I received a recall notice. Now almost 3 month later they still have no fix. At this time my vehicle is in my mind unsafe to drive due to excessive tire wear on the fron end. Don't want to purchase 2 more tires at my expense, since I only have 23,000 miles on vehicle. Have replaced 2 at 15,000 miles. Seems like Mercedes is just plain dragging this out and hoping said vehicle owners will drop the whole thing. Help!!

There is an open recall for 3 months whereby there is a possibility that wheels are inappropriately specified and not able to carry body weight. My van is constantly have trouble with tires/wheels breaking, ripping within no time. I feel like I’m buying new tires every 1-1.5 years. It is a constant state of low tire pressure warnings followed by replacing tires. In May 2022, I had an incident where torn/leaking tire was filled with air by MB roadside assurance and incorrectly installed on my van. The result was that the tire flew off my van while in motion. I replaced all 4 tires with a slighter higher load tire because I was so scared by the incident. Less than 3 months later, one of those tires was torn on the interior. Replaced again. Today I am driving and again one of the new tires suddenly indicates dropped pressure to 34 compared to others at 41. I feel that the rapidly deterioration of tires is due improperly indicated weight load.

Electrical failure by mercedes metris is intermittent but frequent. There are multiple times where car will indicate that blind spot alert is inoperable. Similarly, it appears that indicator on same side and automatic door locks on that side do not work. It will sometimes reboot and work intermittently for a period of time before recurring.

2016 vehicle with approximately 72000 miles. While attempting to stop, vehicle had complete brake failure, brake pedal locked in place and unable to move. Safely pulled to side of road and shit engine off. Upon restarting the brakes went back to normal. This sequence happened 6times over the course of 3 days. Vehicle was taken to dealership. Dealer diagnosed as brake booster pump faulty. Currently Waiting on quote for repairs.

ENGINE ON AND VEHICLE PARKED FOR 10 MINUTES WITH PARKING BRAKE APPLIED. LEAVING FROM A PARKED POSITION WITH ENGINE RUNNING, PARKING BRAKE RELEASED, I SHIFTED FROM PARK INTO DRIVE BUT THE VEHICLE SHOWED I WAS STILL IN PARK. COULD HEAR TRANSMISSION SHIFTING FROM P TO D AND TO R BUT NO INFORMATION FEEDBACK. EVENTUALLY I FOUND THAT I COULD ENGAGE IN REVERSE, NEUTRAL, PARK, AND DRIVE BUT ONLY PARK WAS SHOWING ON DISPLAY. I TRIED RESTARTING THE VAN BUT IT DIDN'T CHANGE. RECEIVED ERRORS FOR TURNING CAR OFF WHILE IN DRIVE EVEN THOUGH I WAS IN PARK. I ENDED UP DRIVING WITH THE CAR IN "PARK" FOR ABOUT 100 MILES TO MY DESTINATION. DURING THE DRIVE, THERE WERE LOTS OF ERRORS MAINLY THE SPEEDOMETER WOULD NOT WORK ( HAD POWER BUT ONLY SAID 0 MPH). THE TACHOMETER REMAINED AT ~800RPM REGARDLESS OF ACTUAL RPM. THE GAS GAUGE WOULDN'T WORK. NUMEROUS ERRORS OCCURRED WITH THE ACTIVE BRAKING SYSTEM (ALARM ONLY). THE SRS DEFECTIVE INDICATOR REMAINED ON THE ENTIRE DRIVE. WHEN I REACHED MY DESTINATION (GAS STATION), SHIFTED TO PARK. I TURNED THE CAR OFF AGAIN AND COMPLETELY DISCONNECTED EVERYTHING ELECTRICAL AND LET THE VAN SIT FOR ~5 MINUTES. THE ERRORS CLEARED WHEN I RESTARTED AND THE SPEEDOMETER/TACHOMETER/GAS/SRS ALL WORKED BUT I HAD A NEW CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ACTIVATED. THE ONLY MESSAGE WAS STILL RELATED TO SRS BUT THE CEL STAYED ON EVEN AFTER ACKNOWLEDGING THE SERVICE MESSAGE. AFTER ABOUT ~200 MILES AND 3-4 RESTARTS THE CEL CLEARED AND EVERYTHING WORKED PROPERLY FOR THE REMAINDER OF OUR TRIP (ABOUT 1000 MILES ROUND TRIP). LATER, I WAS ABLE TO RECREATE A SIMILAR SYSTEM MALFUNCTION WHEN APPLYING THE PARKING BRAKE. I'VE SINCE BEEN ABLE TO CONJUR RANDOM ERRORS ALL RELATED WITH SAFETY SYSTEMS AND THE PARK/DRIVE/REVERSE SCENARIO 50% OF THE TIME AFTER APPLYING AND RELEASING THE PARKING BRAKE. THE ERRORS ONLY HAPPEN AFTER ACTIVATION AND RELEASE OF THE PARKING BRAKE (SO FAR TO THIS DAY).

WHEN I NOTICED MY RIGHT REAR TIRE WAS BALLED AMOUNT TO THE STEAL BELTS, I KNEW THERE WAS A PROBLEM. THE CAR ONLY HAD 20K ON IT. I WENT TO PUT THE SPARE ON. WHEN REMOVING THE TIRE, UP ON FACTORY JACK, AND BOLTS REMOVED. I NOTICED THAT AS MUCH AS I JACKED THE CAR UP THE TIRE WOULD NOT COME ALL THE WAY OFF THE GROUND. WHEN I FINALLY GOT THE TIRE FREE, THE BRAKE ROTOR SHOT DOWN ON THE BOTTOM OF THE RIM, SHOT THE CAR UP IN THE AIR, AND JACK KNOCKED OVER. IT WAS LIKE THE SPRING CAME COMPLETE UNCOMPRESSED AND SHOT THE CAR UP. WHEN IT CAME DOWN, MY HAND WAS WEDGE BETWEEN THE TIRE AND CAR. I WAS ABLE TO GET IT OUT QUICKLY, BUT I COULD NOT GET THE CAR JACK UP ALL THE WAY TO GET THE TIRE OFF. I HAVE TO GET A ROAD SIDE SERVICE TO COME WITH A LONGER JACK TO PUT UNDER THE SUSPENSION, JACK IT UP TO COMPRESS THE SUSPENSION. THEN I GOT THE TIRE OFF. THIS ALL HAPPENED IN MY GARAGE WITH A LEVEL CONCRETE FLOOR. I READ THE MANUAL SEVERAL TIME TO MAKE SURE I DID THE TIRE CHANGE CORRECTLY, AND I DID. THE VAN ONLY HAD 20K MILES. I'M STILL CONFUSED HOW THE TIRE END UP LIKE IT DID. I TOOK IT TO MY NEAREST MERCEDES DEALERSHIP. THEY TOLD ME NOTHING WAS BROKEN ON THE REAR SUSPENSION. THEY COULDN'T EXPLAIN THE ISSUE I HAD CHANGING THE TIRE, BUT THEY HAD SEEN THE TIRE WEAR ISSUE SEVERAL TIMES ON THESE VANS. THEY SAID THE ALIGNMENT WAS WAY OUT. I USE THIS VEHICLE FOR MY VIDEO PRODUCTION BUSINESS. AFTER THIS ACCIDENT, I HAD THE CAR WEIGHTED ON A CAT SCALE, LOADED AND UNLOADED. I HAUL AROUND 1300 POUNDS OF GEAR. ITS RATED FOR 1874 POUND OF CARGO, AND THAT WITH TWO ROWS OF SEATS THAT WEIGH 150 POUNDS EACH THAT I HAVE REMOVED FROM THE CAR. I PUT NEW TIRES ON THE CAR AND HAD IT ALIGNED WITH ALL THE WEIGHT I CARRY. IT WAS FINE FOR ABOUT A 1000 MILES. I JUST DON'T FEEL SAFE. IT FEELS LIKE I'VE MAX THE SUSPENSION OUT. I FEEL THE SUSPENSION ON THIS CAR IT NOT RIGHT FOR THE WEIGHT IS SAYS IT CAN HANDLE

THE CRUISE CONTROL LACKS A SEPARATE ON/OFF SWITCH. WHEN THE CRUISE CONTROL STEM IS PULL BACKWARD, THE SYSTEM IS TURNED ON/ENGAGED, WHICH IS NON STANDARD FOR SWITCHES. WHEN INITIALLY TURNED ON, IT ACTIVATES AT THE SPEED OF THE VEHICLE. WHEN THE CRUISE CONTROL IS TURNED OFF, THEN BACK ON (WITHOUT HAVING TURNED OFF THE ENGINE) THE VEHICLE WILL EITHER ACCELERATE OR DECELERATE ABRUPTLY TO THE PREVIOUSLY SET SPEED. THE CRUISE CONTROL STEM IS ALSO LOCATED NEAR THE HEADLIGHT DIMMER SWITCH ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE STEERING COLUMN, WHICH ARE BOTH SIMILAR IN SIZE AND FEEL. AT NIGHT I EXITED AN INTERSTATE HIGHWAY IN MT AND HAD THE CRUISE CONTROL SET TO 75 MPH. I TURNED OFF/DISENGAGED THE CRUISE CONTROL AS I EXITED THE FREEWAY. ON A LIGHTED STREET WITH A 30 MPH SPEED LIMIT, I REALIZED MY HEADLIGHTS WERE ON BRIGHT SO I USED MY LEFT HAND TO DIM THE HEADLIGHTS, WHICH DIM BY PULLING THE APPROPRIATE STEM REARWARD. I MISTAKENLY PULLED THE CRUISE CONTROL STEM REARWARD, WHICH IMMEDIATELY TURN ON/ENGAGED TO THE CRUISE CONTROL AND BEGAN TO ACCELERATE THE VAN TO 75 MPH. I QUICKLY TURNED THE CRUISE CONTROL OFF, THEN DIMMED THE HEADLIGHTS. THE INCIDENT WAS DANGER AND DISTRACTING. RAPID DECELERATION OCCURS, WITH NO BRAKE LIGHTS, WHEN THE CRUISE CONTROL IS SET AT 40 MPH, TURNED OFF, THEN TURNED ON/ENGAGED AT 70 MPH.

MERCEDES CLAIMES THAT THE METRIS IS ABLE TO TOW 5000LBS. WE BOUGHT THE VEHICLE NEW WITH THE TOW PACKAGE FACTORY INSTALLED. MERCEDES NEVER DISCLOSED THE FACT THAT IT'S WIRING HARNESS INCLUDED IN THE PACKAGE DOES NOT OPERATE ELECTRIC TRAILER BRAKES AND THAT NO FACTORY OR THIRD PARTY OPTION IS AVAILABLE. WE ALMOST HAD AN ACCIDENT DUE TO OUR INABILITY TO STOP QUICKLY ENOUGH. THATS HOW WE FOUND OUT THAT THE FACTORY INSTALLED TRAILER WIRING HARNESS DOES NOT OPERATE ELECTRIC BRAKES. MERCEDES SHOULD HAVE WARNED US ABOUT THIS ISSUE. THE FACTORY TRAILER WIRING HARNESS INCLUDES A 7 WIRE CONNECTOR, BUT IS ONLY WIRED FOR 6. IT CONTROLS BRAKE LIGHTS,TURN SIGNALS, RUNNING LIGHTS BUT NOT ELECTRIC BRAKES. I FILED A COMPLAINT WITH MERCEDES CORPORATE AND STATED HOW THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE. CUSTOMERS MAY WRONGLY ASSUME THAT THEIR ELECTRIC TRAILER BRAKES ARE BEING ACTIVATED WHEN APPLYING THE VEHICLES BRAKES. WITHOUT TRAILER BRAKES, MOST TOW PAYLOADS ARE LIMITED TO 2500LBS. 5000LBS IS WAY BEYOND THE SAFE LIMIT. MERCEDES STATED THAT THERE IS NO WAY FOR THE METRIS TO ACTIVATE ELECTRIC BRAKES. I BELIEVE THAT MERCEDES NEEDS TO WARN CUSTOMERS OF THIS SPECIFIC DESIGN FLAW. MOST LIGHT DUTY TRAILERS AND CAMPERS IN THE USA USE ELECTRIC BRAKES. OUR ALMOST ACCIDENT HAPPENED ON THE I35 SOUTH OF WACO TX. WE WERE AT HIGHWAY SPEED WHEN THE TRAFFIC CAME TO A SUDDEN STOP. LUCKILY WE HAD A LARGE ENOUGH DISTANCE BETWEEN US AND THE CARS STOPPING AHEAD. WE HAD A CAR AT THE LAST MOMENT SWERVE INTO OUR LANE AND STOP. NOW WE WERE TRYING TO COME TO AN EMERGENCY STOP. WE HAD TO DEPART OUR LANE TO KEEP FROM REAR ENDING THE CAR. WE LATER FOUND OUT THAT OUR TRAILER BRAKE WE NOT BEING ACTIVATED AND THAT WAS THE CAUSE OF OUR INCREASED STOPPING DISTANCE.
