The contact owns a 2002 Mercedes-Benz S500. The contact stated that upon starting the vehicle, the instrument panel and dashboard lights were off. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact stated that his daughter was able to drive the vehicle since the exterior lights were working properly. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the instrument cluster had failed and needed to be replaced. The contact stated that the failure had been reoccurring while driving. The contact referenced NHTSA Campaign Number: 06V028000 (Interior Lighting). The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that an extended warranty had been issued for the failure but had already expired. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 100,000.

I HAVE APPROXIMATELY 104,000 MILES, I CANNOT SEE IT ANYMORE BECAUSE WHILE DRIVING HOME AT NIGHT FROM THE AIRPORT ON THE EXPRESSWAY DOING 65 MILES PER HOUR, IT WENT BLACK. ALL THE GAUGES WERE FOUND STUCK IN THEIR LOCATION THE NEXT MORNING AT WHAT THEY WERE AT WHEN THE CLUSTER WENT BLACK. THE CLUSTER HAS NEVER RECOVERED AND I HAVE TO DRIVE WITH NO IDEA OF SPEED, SIGNALS OPERATION, FUEL LEVEL, OR WATER TEMP. THE INFORMATION DISPLAY IS ALSO BLANK SO I DON’T KNOW WHAT MY MILEAGE IS OR IF THE VEHICLE HAS ANY OTHER INFORMATION TO GIVE ME. I HAD TO DRIVE HOME 60 MILES IN THE DARK. MY HEADLIGHTS GO ON ALL BY ITSELF WHENEVER I START MY CAR NOW. MY CLIMATE CONTROL ALSO REMAINS LIT AND CAUSES A BATTERY DRAIN OVER A PERIOD OF TIME. I WAS VERY LUCKY TO MAKE IT HOME BUT NOW I CAN ONLY DRIVE DURING THE DAYTIME UNTIL I CAN GET MY INSTRUMENT CLUSTER REPAIRED. MY COMFORT LEVEL DRIVING THIS VEHICLE HAS DIMINISHED GREATLY, THIS VEHICLE IS MY FAMILY VEHICLE, DOES MERCEDES BENZ NOT CARE ANYMORE. IF ONE OF THEIR FAMILY MEMBERS WERE TO PERISH IN AN ACCIDENT AS A RESULT OF THIS PROBLEM I’M PRETTY SURE THEY WOULD IMMEDIATELY FIND A SOLUTION TO FIX IT.

THE BATTERY LOCATED IN THE TRUNK OF THE VEHICLE IS SITUATED NEXT TO THE GAS TANK. THERE ARE NO COVERS ON THE METAL PARTS ON THE TOP OF THE BATTERY LOCATED IN THE TRUNK OF THE VEHICLE, AND THE MAT THAT COMES WITH THE VEHICLE DOES NOT SUFFICIENTLY COVER THESE METAL POLES, LEAVING THEM VULNERABLE TO CATCH FLAME WHEN METAL ITEMS ARE IN THE BACK OF THE VEHICLE. THE REAR BATTERY CAUGHT FLAME, WHILE STATIONARY, DUE TO A METAL ROD USED FOR FURNITURE ASSEMBLY TOUCHING THE EXPOSED PORTION OF THE BATTERY.

WHILE DRIVING ON 12/10/2016, THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER PANEL WENT VERY DARK. AT NIGHT THERE WAS NO ILLUMINATION EITHER. ALSO THE SPEEDOMETER WAS FLUCTUATING WILDLY FROM HIGH TO LOW AND BACK. I COULD ONLY SEE THIS WITH MY INTERIOR LIGHT ON, AS THE DASH PANEL WAS DARK. I REALIZED I COULD NOT READ ANY OF THE OTHER THE GAUGES INCLUDING THE SAFETY WARNING DISPLAY PANEL, NOR DID THE TURN SIGNALS INSIDE THE VEHICLE WORK OR THE VOLUME CONTROL ON THE STEERING WHEEL. THE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION AT THE TIME. THE VEHICLE WAS INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 06V028000 (INTERIOR LIGHTING). ON 12/15/16 THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF MY FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER INFORMED ME THAT IT WAS NOT A RECALL BUT A "VOLUNTARY EXTENDED WARRANTY ISSUE". THE MANUFACTURER EXPLAINED TO ME THAT MY CAR WAS PART OF IT, BUT I WAS "OUT OF TIME" WITH MY REQUEST FOR REPAIR OR REPLACEMENT. AT THE TIME THE CAR HAD APPROXIMATELY 195,000 ON IT. THIS IS THE 5TH MERCEDES I HAVE OWNED, READING FROM THE BLOGS THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM, HENCE THE NHTSA INVOLVEMENT. MINE IS A DOCUMENTED FAILED CASE UNDER MERCEDES RECOGNIZED PROGRAM, BUT THEY FAIL TO FOLLOW-UP WITH THEIR EXTENDED WARRANTY COVERAGE BECAUSE IT IS OUT OF TIME. WHETHER IT IS IN TIME OR OUT OF TIME A SAFETY FAILURE IS A SAFETY FAILURE. ONE WOULD THINK THAT A COMPANY LIKE MERCEDES BENZ WOULD WANT TO KEEP ALIVE A 5 TIME OWNER OF MERCEDES AND PUT BRAND LOYALTY OVER PROFIT. I HAVE THREE CHILDREN NOW ENTERING THEIR CAR OWNING YEARS. THEY HAVE GROWN UP WITH MERCEDES BUT I GUESS IT IS NOW TIME TO SHOW THEM ANOTHER CAR BRAND SO THEY CAN BE A CUSTOMER FOR LIFE TO ANOTHER AUTOMOBILE COMPANY, ONE THAT WILL PLACE THEIR LIFE AHEAD OF THE PROFIT ON AN INSTRUMENT CLUSTER. I PURCHASED MY VEHICLE NEW IN 2002. IT HAS ABOUT 48500 MILES. I WORK CLOSE TO HOME. I HAVE ALREADY REPLACED THE SUSPENSION AIR BAGS ONCE AND MY VEHICLE IS DROPPING AGAIN. I HAVE READ THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH MY VEHICLE YEAR, MAKE AND MODEL. WHAT CAN I DO? MY VEHICLE IS VERY WELL TAKEN CARE OF AND I FIND IT OUTRAGEOUS THAT MERCEDES BENZ BEING FULLY AWARE OF THIS ISSUE, REFUSES TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY. ESPECIALLY WITH THE ORIGINAL PRICE OF THE VEHICLE.

MY AIRMATIC SUSPENSION MADEY MY CAR GO DOWN REAL LOW, I PAY A LOT OF MONEY TO GET THE TWO AIR MATIC SUSPENSION FIX. MY REAR END IS STILL GOING DOWN AND NOW THE REAR IS LOWER THAN THE FRONT. OIL COOLER LEAK ON MY 2002 S600, AND I FOUND OUT THAT THIS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM ON THESE CARS (2000-2002 V12 ENGINES) AND A VERY EXPENSIVE REPAIR THAT MERCEDES BENZ SHOULD COVER OR AT LEAST A LARGE PERCENTAGE OF THE REPAIR. I JUST FOUND OUT ABOUT YOUR WEBSITE SO I DECIDED TO FILE A COMPLAINT. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE MERCEDES BENZ DEALER AND THEY DIAGNOSED IT AND SAID THE REAR MAIN SEAL NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. I PAID OVER $1100.00 FOR THIS REPAIR AND TOOK THE CAR BACK 3 TIMES WITHIN A WEEK AND A HALF BECAUSE THE OIL LEAK CONTINUED ONLY TO FIND OUT THE OIL COOLER IS WHAT IS LEAKING AND NOT THE REAR MAIN SEAL. *TR

FIRST INCIDENT IN OCTOBER 2013 INSTRUMENT PANEL SUGGESTED THAT REAR LIGHTS WERE MALFUNCTIONING. TOOK IN TO MECHANIC AND REPLACED FUSE, THEN APPROX. 3 WEEK LATER REPEATED MALFUNCTION, BUT NOW THE INSTRUMENT PANEL WENT DARK. REPLACED FUSE AGAIN, AFTER THIS TIME IT LASTED FOR ANOTHER COUPLE OF WEEKS. NOW IT'S DECEMBER 2013 AND THE ENTIRE INSTRUMENT PANEL IS DARK, NO MILEAGE, SPEEDOMETER, FUEL OR SAFETY GAUGES. The contact owns a 2002 Mercedes-Benz S500. The contact stated that the instrument cluster had started to flicker and had eventually gone completely blank without warning. The contact had taken the vehicle to a dealer where he was informed that his vehicle was not included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 06V028000 (Interior Lighting). The manufacturer was also notified of the failure and provided the contact with the same information as the dealer. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 135,000. The defective instrument cluster also prevents the owner of these cars not knowing when the vehicle air shocks can and will suddenly drop without warning like the rear air shocks completely dropped.

WE HAD TO HAVE OUR CAR TOWED FROM INSIDE THE CAR WASH BAY BECAUSE THE CAR WOULD NOT SHIFT OUT OF PARK. THE NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH, WHICH IS PLASTIC, BROKE PROHIBITING THE CAR FROM SHIFTING OUT OF PARK. THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER MERCEDES BENZ ROADSIDE SENT TO US TOLD US HE SEES THIS ALL OF THE TIME WITH THIS PARTICULAR CAR. ALSO BY THE FORUMS, YOU CAN SEE THAT THIS IS A PARTICULAR PROBLEM FOR CERTAIN YEARS. FROM WHAT I UNDERSTAND, THE NEW SHIFT BOX FROM MERCEDES HAS AN ALUMINUM SAFETY SWITCH OR "BILLET". WE ATTEMPTED TO BUY THE NEW "BILLET" BUT OUR MERCEDES BENZ DEALER WILL NOT SELL IT TO US. WE WERE TOLD HE HAD TO HAVE THEM TAKE THE ENTIRE THING APART DO THE WORK THEMSELVES FOR CLOSE TO $1000 FOR WHAT SHOULD BE A $00.50 PART. IN ORDER TO GET THE "BILLET" IT HAS TO BE BOUGHT AFTERMARKET ONLINE FOR CLOSE TO $200.00. I HAVE A 2002 MERCEDES S430. I WOULD LIKE TO REPORT A DEFECTIVE PART ON THIS VEHICLE. THE "ELECTRONIC SHIFTER MECHANISM" WENT BAD ON MY VEHICLE WITH 47,000 MILES ON THE ODOMETER. MY CAR TURNED ON, HOWEVER THE "SHIFTER" WOULD NOT COME OUT OF PARK. IT WAS DETERMINED MY THE MERCEDES SERVICE SHOP THAT THE "ELECTRONIC SHIFTER MECHANISM" WAS BAD. MERCEDES BENZ HAS LISTED A RECALL ON ALL W220 MERCEDES-BENZ VEHICLES. THE RECALL WAS ABOUT THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER FAILING RESULTING IN THE CLUSTER TO NOT WORK. THE MPH, RPM DOESN'T WORK. NOTHING ON THE CLUSTER WORKS. WHEN I WENT ON MAY 12, 2011 TO THE MERCEDES DEALERSHIP TO GET MY INSTRUMENT CLUSTER FIXED BECAUSE IT WAS RECALLED I SPOKE WITH A LADY AT THE DEALER EXPLAINING MY SITUATION ABOUT THE PART BEING RECALLED AND THAT IT IS DEFECTIVE. SHE ASKED ME TO GIVE HER MY VIN NUMBER. WHEN SHE TYPED IN MY VIN NUMBER, SHE TOLD ME THAT MY CLUSTER IS NOT ELIGIBLE FOR A REPAIR. SHE SAID THE MY VIN NUMBER WAS A "STATUS 9 ISSUE" AND BECAUSE OF THIS, IT VOIDS ALL WARRANTIES NO MATTER WHAT. I SPOKE WITH EVERYONE THERE TYING TO SORT THINGS OUT AND SEE IF I CAN WORK OUT THIS ISSUE. MY 2002 S430 HAS BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT THAT IS WHY IT IS A STATUS 9. The contact stated while driving 60 MPH, the active body control warning light illuminated, after which the front suspension lowered to the ground, preventing the vehicle from being driven. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the hydro-pneumatic suspension pump and high-pressure hose. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 07V263000 (Suspension, Engine, and Engine Cooling) but the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was 98,000.

I AM TOLD THE AIRMATIC SUSPENSION WENT OUT. WHY? THE CAR SAID STOP AIRMATIC TO LOW. I HAVE NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEMS WHICH MAY HAVE LEAD UP TO THESE ISSUES. I HAVE A 2002 430S MERCEDES BENZ WITH ONLY 69,000 MILES ON IT. I HAVE REPLACED THE AIRMATIC PUMP AND PAID $641.89 ON SEPT 25, 2008 AT RICK HILL IMPORTS IN KINGSPORT TN AND MY CAR IS AGAIN LOWERING TO THE GROUND WHILE DRIVING SPEEDS OF 40 TO 50 MPH. I HAVE TO PULL OFF THE ROAD TO AIR MY CAR UP WHICH IS DANGEROUS. I TOOK IT BACK TO RICK HILL IMPORTS THEY TELL ME THE SHOCKS ARE LEAKING AIR AND THAT IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THESE CARS. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 MERCEDES BENZ S500. ON OCTOBER 1, 2007, THE MILEAGE GAUGE DISPLAYED 26,700. THE FOLLOWING DAY, THE GAUGE DISPLAYED 43,000. EVER SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED IN 2005, THE WINDOWS AND SUNROOF HAVE OPENED WITHOUT WARNING WHILE DRIVING AT SPEEDS RANGING FROM 20 TO 45MPH. THE FAILURE OCCURRED WHILE DRIVING THROUGH A CAR WASH AND WHILE PARKED WITH THE ENGINE SHUT OFF. THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURES. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE CD PLAYER FAILED A FEW WEEKS AGO AND THE DEALER INFORMED HER THAT IT NEEDED REPLACING. THERE WAS A WARNING LIGHT THAT INDICATED NO MALFUNCTION, HOWEVER, AFTER THE DEALER DIAGNOSED THE FAILURE, IT BEGAN TO DISPLAY MESSAGES. CONSUMER STATED HE PURCHASED A LEMON. SINCE PURCHASING THE VEHICLE IT HAS BEEN IN THE REPAIR SHOP 4-5 TIMES AND EACH TIME AT LEAST A MONTH. THE AIR BAG LIGHT CAME ON AND WENT OFF INTERMITTENTLY. BUT THEY DON'T EXPECT TO BE STRUCK BY AUTOMOBILE AIRBAGS SUCH AS WHAT OCCURRED ON TUESDAY WHEN EDGELY FIRE COMPANY FIREFIGHTERS RESPONDED TO A CAR FIRE IN THE 3M INDUSTRIAL PARK IN BRISTOL TOWNSHIP. IN FACT, OFFICIALS SAID ANDY TAGGART, 25, WAS KNOCKED OUT WHEN THE DRIVER-SIDE AIRBAG ON A 2002 MERCEDES BENZ INEXPLICABLY DEPLOYED AS THE VETERAN FIREFIGHTER WAS CHECKING THE DASH FOR DAMAGE. A SECOND FIREFIGHTER, RYAN FLANAGAN, 18, WAS SLIGHTLY INJURED WHEN HE WAS STRUCK IN THE HEAD BY A PARTIALLY DEPLOYING AIRBAG AS HE WAS CHECKING THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE FRONT DASH, OFFICIALS SAID. BOTH WERE RUSHED TO ST. MARY MEDICAL CENTER IN LANGHORNE WHERE THEY WERE KEPT FOR OBSERVATION AND THEN RELEASED EARLY YESTERDAY. FLANAGAN SAID EDGELY RESPONDED TO THE FIRE SCENE AROUND 9:38 P.M. AFTER LEARNING THAT A 2002 MERCEDES BENZ WAS ON FIRE IN FRONT OF A&Z AUTOMOTIVE ON MANNING BOULEVARD. WHEN FIREFIGHTERS ARRIVED, THEY SAW SMOKE COMING FROM UNDER THE DASH AND BEGAN TO GET THE SITUATION UNDER CONTROL. THE DRIVER SIDE AIRBAG BLEW WITH SUCH FORCE IT KNOCKED TAGGART UNCONSCIOUS WHILE THE PASSENGER SIDE BAG, WHICH ONLY PARTIALLY DEPLOYED, STRUCK A GLANCING BLOW OFF THE SIDE OF RYAN FLANAGAN'S HEAD. BOTH FIREFIGHTERS WERE WEARING HELMETS, WHICH LIKELY SAVED THEM FROM FURTHER INJURY. AEROSTAR, THE SECURITY COMPANY WHICH ELECTRONICALLY MONITORS LUXURY CARS SUCH AS THE MERCEDES, HAD AUTOMATICALLY CALLED 911 WHEN IT DETECTED A FIRE UNDER THE DASHBOARD. THE AEROSTAR SYSTEM ALSO AUTOMATICALLY UNLOCKED THE CARS DOORS AND CONTACTED THE OWNER, WHO WAS NOT WITH THE VEHICLE AT THE TIME. THE VEHICLE WAS EQUIPPED WITH A SAFETY FEATURE WHICH AUTOMATICALLY REDUCES THE SPEED OF THE VEHICLE TO 20-30 MPH WHEN VARIOUS SENSORS DETECT SOME SORT OF MECHANICAL DIFFICULTY. WHILE THE CONSUMER WAS DRIVING ABOUT 60 MPH THE SAFETY FEATURE ACTIVATED AND THE VEHICLE SPEED WAS REDUCED. THE DRIVER WAS FORCED TO PULL OVER AND THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TOT HE DEALER.
