The contact filed the complaint on behalf of the customer, who was the owner of a 2021 Ram 3500. The contact stated that while the owner was driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle caught on fire. No warning lights were illuminated. The owner informed the contact that the fire came from the engine bay. The fire department arrived and extinguished the fire. A police report was filed. The vehicle was taken to a local tow yard. The vehicle was later towed to the independent mechanic. No injuries were sustained. In addition, the contact stated that the transmission was replaced by an independent mechanic. The failure occurred the following day after the vehicle was released by the independent mechanic. In addition, the owner of the vehicle had received a recall notification NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V060000 (Electrical System). The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 99,000.

Fire: 1
Failure of hydraulic lifters and camshaft in Cummins 6.7 liter diesel engine of 2021 RAM 3500. Engine exhibited significant ticking noise and the engine does not work properly, putting the safety of driver and passengers in vehicle at risk. Vehicle is not driveable. This issue has been confirmed by the RAM dealership in Livingston, Montana. The 2021 RAM 3500 truck has been sitting at the RAM dealership for the past seven weeks awaiting parts and a fix that RAM trucks is still trying to figure out. Apparently, this has become a common problem with the RAM Cummins 6.7 liter diesels from model years 2019 through current 2025 models, including 2021. The RAM dealership in Livingston, Montana has five separate RAM Cummins 6.7 liter diesel trucks with the same issue awaiting parts and a fix from RAM.

Hydraulic roller lifter failure.
Dec 25, 2024
There exist a defect which is common through multiple years with RAM that have the Cummins 6.7L diesel engine. The problem is the heater bolt in intake system. When this fails it falls into intake and proceeds into piston which requires engine rebuild. Unfortunately the same part is put back in causing repeat. Solution Banks Monster Ram Intake system. Many, many owners over years have experienced loss of vehicle in both new and older models. Engine lock up can cause loss of steering and worse on highways.

Catastrophic lifter failure. Was able to safely deliver vehicle to dealership service department. If not handled properly, engine failure could occur while driving and hurt/kill someone.

On [XXX] while I was driving in Reno Nevada with the truck without warning smoke started to come out of the hood, fluid was coming out from under truck, fire department came made sure fire was extinguished, vehicle towed to Dolan Dodge Ram Fiat in Reno Nevada. It was determined that the fire was caused but the recall issues, case was opened with Ram and as of today 5/13/2024 Ram has not repaired the truck and the dealership has told me that the Manufacturer has yet to respond or communicate with them. This coming July it will be one year since the incident, I have loss income, and I have continued to make payments to the bank on the truck, I contacted Ram directly where they had to open a new can but no resolution given. Per the dealer they tell me that they have the parts but they can't fix until the manufacturer tells them to fix. On 1 Jan 2022 after driving from Washougal WA to Vancouver WA, I noticed after stopping for food that my front driver-side tire was near completely flat. Upon checking the dash information screen and cycling to the tire pressure screen, it reflected that my front drivers side tire was at 15 PSI, while the other 5 tires (dually) were at the proper pressures. The problem is that the TPMS did not, nor continues to not display a low pressure warning AT ALL, despite the vehicle being aware of the low measured pressure. This vehicle is brand new, with less than 7000 miles on the odometer. I tow heavy loads, and without a doubt the tire was well below proper pressure for at least 20 miles of driving; the only way I discovered was by noticing the tire after stopping. The tire pressure screen confirmed what I saw, but zero warnings were displayed (low tire pressure, TPMS light, service message, etc) as all TPMS cars/trucks I have driven over 25 years have done. This is a huge safety issue, and deserves significant attention as this situation could have resulted in a major accident. The vehicle is 100% stock with zero modifications. I have included pictures to support the facts above. The vehicle is also in the “failed state” should your agency wish to examine and confirm. This could very well result in a large scale safety recall.

The contact owns a 2021 Ram 3500. The contact stated that after starting the vehicle, the accelerator pedal was depressed, but the vehicle failed to drive forward or to reverse. The RPM was raised high, and the check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was determined that the transmission needed to be replaced; however, the parts were on backorder. The failure recurred, and the vehicle was towed to the farm. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened. The failure mileage was approximately 64,000.

The contact owns a 2021 Ram 3500. The contact stated while the vehicle was parked, the contact noticed fluid on the ground underneath the vehicle. The contact inspected the vehicle and cleaned the oil pan. The contact determined that the fluid was not coming from the oil pan. The contact inspected the transmission dip stick and determined that the leaking fluid was coming from the transmission fluid reservoir. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was filed. The contact was informed of an unknown recall; however, the contact was informed that the VIN was not included in the recall. The contact was advised to contact the NHTSA Hotline to report the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 60,000.

Well traveling up a hill the transmission locked up shut the truck down had to hold the brakes to keep for rolling Backwards got the truck in park was able to restart it put it back in gear The transmission started making A loud grinding noise slammed in to gear really hard when I put it back in to drive then it Was it like it went into neutral again? Then it slammed into gear again was able to get the truck off the road and it Kept making the loud grinding and locking up then going into Neutral again.

Transmission will not go in to Park when stopped, Truck will roll away if parked on grade. Dealer reports no recall on this Transmission. Has not been inspected by anyone at this time. No warning lights ,before or after problem started. Problem start about 6 month ago, at about 18,000 miles

The transmission’s light came on saying that it was heated. I parked as soon as possible and that’s when the flames were coming out of the hood. I did burned my hands trying to put out the fire with 3 fire extinguishers. I did not want my truck to burn. Now, the dealer is trying to say that they can’t get a conclusion of what started the fire. The truck smells like burned transmission fluid. I sent pictures of the truck to the dealer. There is a recall in February 2020 with the same problem that I had with my 2021 Ram. Prior to this incident, the truck did not have any warnings or lights on.

The contact stated that the vehicle was previously taken to a local dealer to be serviced under NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V398000 (Wheels); however, while driving at an undisclosed speed, the passenger’s side rear wheel studs fractured. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was then towed to an independent mechanic, where it remained awaiting diagnostic and repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 24,000.

We had the left driver side rear tire crack in two different places on the outside while driving from AL to OK with a load of cattle. No air tire pressure warning from truck when tire deflated. Tire happened to quickly deflate right as we stopped for gas due to the cracks in sidewall. This tire would have blown out while we were driving and we could have lost truck, trailer, and cattle. It was luck we stopped for gas when we did. The right front tire has bubbles and is not holding pressure. The dealership told us if they bring it up to pressure it will blow out. Truck was bought in April 2021. Tires are Firestone Transforce LT285/60R/20 AT. These tires are dangerous, and we'd like them replaced. It makes me sick to my stomach to think what could have happened.

The truck comes with a factory installed TPMS. The system to constantly reporting an error where one or more tires is not reading correctly. I spoke to a tire shop who said the RAM is notorious for this but there is no know fix. Yesterday while towing an rv down the highway, as usual the TPMS system was reporting errors in tire reading. This morning, I wake up to find a tire that is completely flat and not helping to support the load.

TIRES

I have had two tires separate in the past couple of months with less than 24000 miles and 5 years old. I filed a complaint with Nexen and they sent a partial payment for the first one but rejected the second claim that happened less than 500 miles of the first claim. They claim the tires are separated because of the low miles on the truck and it is not driven enough. Less than a year ago my brother had the same issue with the same tires and truck with similar mileage and was sent a check for 6 new tires. I have additional photos and photos of the other tire as well as emails with Nexen and XXX Sr. Quality Analyst [XXX] [XXX] [XXX] [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Nexen Roadian HTX RH5 LT235 / 80 R 17. While driving down interstate and pulling a 21,000 lb GVWR fifth wheel trailer, the truck began vibrate. After stopping it appeared that the front passenger tire was out of round. This was confirmed after jacking up the vehicle. Suspect internal damage to the radials. The tire had a total of 16,600 miles on it. Tire had cold pressure of 80 psi and was just checked 4 days prior to the incident. Luckily, the issue was discovered prior to a catastrophic failure, so no damage or accident occured for this particular failure.

Nexen LT235/80R17 2 blow out's and one tire failure. factory installed tires. I have had 2 blowouts on the right front of my Ram 3500. I had discount tire unmount and re mount my spare on the blown-out tire wheel (for appearance purpose) so my spare is now another brand, the spare Nexen that replaced the blow out also blew out within ~2000 miles. I took the vehicle to Walts Live Oak Ram to inspect the vehicle for a cause of 2 tires blowing in the same position on the vehicle, they also checked the alignment and found nothing. yesterday [XXX] pulling a trailer to Jacksonville I noticed about 50 miles into the trip a slight shudder in the steering wheel and I pressed on. On the return trip the shudder in the steering was substantially profound and the driver side view mirror was bouncing up and down, the passenger side was not, and my hands were getting numb, I slowed to 50 from 70mph and continued, the shuddering eased but was clearly still there. today I took the truck to discount tire Lake city Fla. and asked them to replace the Nexen as I felt it was failing from looking at the tire and running my hand along the tread it didnt feel normal and the tire was hot compared to the passenger side. I asked discount to spin the Nexen on the balancer and they did, it confirmed the tire was failing and was unable to be balanced. the new tire cured the problem. the truck today clocked 37k miles to give you some perspective on mileage and primary use is for towing trailers, 42' 5th wheel, 16' box or flatbed trailer. I’ve replaced turbo twice, computer once, now I’ve been told by multiple dealerships that I need to replace the def system and or fuel pump I hadn’t even got a 100k on the truck yet. The last incident I was driving and it kept saying in so many miles it would only allow me to go 5 mph see dealership for service then the numbers kept changing from high to low I was able to make it over 200 miles to get the truck back to the dealership without any issues.

MY BRAND NEW 2021 RAM 3500 LIMITED LONGHORN, SUDDENLY STOPPED RUNNING AT AROUND 70 MILES. THIS HAPPENED ON I-84 BETWEEN CALDWELL, ID AND BAKER CITY, OR ON 19 JAN 2021 AROUND 9:00PM. ROADSIDE FAILED TWICE AT GETTING US TOWED TO SAFETY. THE 1ST TOWING COMPANY CALLED TO SAY HE DECLINED THE SERVICE AND WAS SURPRISED THAT THEY BOOKED HIM ANYWAY. THE 2ND ONE INFORMED US THEY HAD TO DECLINE THE SERVICE BECAUSE ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE WOULD NOT PAY A FAIR PRICE. BY THEN WE, THE TRUCK, AND OUR TRAILER WAITED ON THE INTERSTATE FOR 4 HOURS IN PITCH DARK AND VERY COLD WEATHER. WE WERE ABLE TO FIND AND PAY A TOWING COMPANY OURSELVES. THE DEALERSHIP INVESTIGATED THE NEXT DAY AND INFORMED US THE VEHICLE STOPPED BECAUSE IT WAS OUT OF FUEL. THE FLOAT OR THE PART THAT DETECTS FUEL LEVEL WAS STUCK IN BETWEEN WIRES OF THE FUEL PUMP. THE DEALERSHIP APPARENTLY DID NOT PUT FUEL ON THE CAR AND WE DID NOT NOTICE BECAUSE THE CAR WAS INDICATING A FULL TANK. THE CAR ALSO DID NOT DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM PROPERLY, INDICATING "DEF FAULT" BEFORE IT DIED. I AM CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY OF RAM VEHICLES AND THEIR SERVICES. A RAM 3500'S PURPOSE IS TO TOW HEAVY TRAILERS AND EXPECTED TO BE REALIABLE IN EXTREME ROAD CONDITIONS. THE BRAND NEW ONE WE BOUGHT COSTS $80,000+ AND IS THEIR HIGH END TRIM. HOWEVER THE CAR COMPANY AND/OR THEIR DEALERSHIP SEEM TO THINK THAT MISTAKES LIKE THIS ARE ACCEPTABLE/EXPECTED EVEN THOUGH THEY HAVE HIGH POTENTIAL TO LEAD TO ACCIDENTS. THEY REFUSED TO TAKE THE CAR BACK BECAUSE IT WOULD CAUSE THEM TO LOSE MONEY AND I AM BOUND BY THE CONTRACT. ACCORDING TO THE LEMON LAW, THE CAR NEEDS TO BREAK DOWN TWICE BEFORE I CAN BE PROTECTED. THE CULTURE OF ACCEPTING LOW STANDARDS, ZERO CULPABILITY, INADEQUATE QUALITY CONTROL SYSTEMS, AND INCOMPETENT ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE ARE A DANGEROUS COMBINATION THAT COULD LEAD TO LOSS OF LIVES AND TRAFFIC INCONVENIENCES.

While driving my truck I noticed my mpg gauge was showing 0 mpg. Then I realized my "miles to go" gauge was reading "low" even though I had plenty of fuel in the tank and my fuel gauge was showing 3/4 full. Even though I use my truck as a commercial vehicle, and drive coast to coast, I was luckily only a couple hours from home, so I kept driving to try to make it home. I did make it home, but during that time, my "check engine light came on along with my "low fuel warning" light. I also realized during that time that my odometer had stopped working. It wasn't showing any numbers at all. When I got home, I checked online to see if anyone else had heard of this problem, or how to fix it. That's when I realized just how common this problem is. Even though my truck is used in the US and my mileage is calculated in miles, the odometer is programmed to stop working at 1,000,000 kilometers, which is 621,369 miles. Who would know or expect this to happen? I called several independent garages, all of which refused to attempt to fix an odometer problem because of the legal implications. I then called several Ram dealers who all told me they had never heard of this and would have to call FCA for advice on how to fix it. After two days of waiting, my local dealer called me back and said they could give me an appt a week later to diagnose the problem with my truck. They said FCA knows about the problem, but to fix it, it has to have a new gauge cluster installed. Nobody I talked to was able to tell me if the truck was safe to drive or why Ram wasn't warning owners of this problem when their trucks reached such an odd number of miles. When they replace the odometer, it will start over again at 0 miles and a sticker in the door jamb stating that the odometer was replaced at 621,369 miles, as if anyone would think to look in the door jamb for this sticker. The reason so few other drivers are going through this problem is because they are buying an OBD reader and resetting it.

Vehicle died in a busy intersection coming off the freeway. Light flashed that indicated it was an issue with the electronic throttle control. The safety of myself and others was put at risk due to the posted speed of the road and multiple lanes from 4 directions. I had to remain in my vehicle to make sure I was not hit by another vehicle and due to the vehicle issue, I was impeding traffic. Lithia Dodge of Grants Pass, OR stated they could not make an appt for the vehicle to get looked at for 2 weeks out, scheduled 8/22/25. Dealership seems to think this is not an issue with safety and this issue can occur while the vehicle is in motion which is a huge safety issue. No warning lights flashed before the first one indicating the vehicle would shut down/lose all power.

SEAT BELTS
1 complaint
The rear driver’s side and rear center seat belts no longer latch. When sliding the belt into the recepticle it fails to “click” or connect. The belt pulls right back out. It does not work at all, it is reproducible every time. The dealer will charge a lot of money to say that they ran diagnostics to tell me what is obvious, so I have not brought it in yet. This is a serious safety risk since the law requires passengers to wear seat belts for safety reasons and this basic safety equipment fails. The vehicle is less than 4 years old and the rear belts have not been used all the time as there were not always passengers. Also, there is no damage to them. I would like it fixed asap and believe the equipment is faulty since two of the three rear belts have failed.

1 complaint
The contact owns a 2021 Ram 3500. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the engine temperature gauge became extremely elevated. The contact pulled over to the side of the road and an independent mechanic briefly inspected the vehicle and informed the contact to refill the coolant reservoir. The contact refilled the reservoir and after driving for approximately thirteen minutes, the failure reoccurred. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the EGR cooler and EGR valve needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact related the failure with Emissions Recall: VB6 (Diesel Engine Calibration); however, the vehicle was not included. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 190,000.

When coming to a complete stop and the brake fully pressed down, the truck will lunge forward and almost hit the car in front of me. Then the trucks idle will reduce and it will start to shake. Several people have reported this issue on this year vehicle. Many people have stated that it is due to a faulty solenoid Torque Converter Clutch (TCC). Please investigate as this could cause a serious accident if the truck lunges and hits a pedestrian in the crosswalk.

Went in for warranty repair for a recall of the lug nuts and wheel stud to find the dealership claimed they did the recall but committed fraud and actually didn’t. Went to pick up vehicle and go directly to Discount Tire for a tire rotation to find the lug nut and wheel stud completely broken off and the wheel not attached to the truck at all. “Only one pothole away” from coming off I was told. The dealership Lawley Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram in Sierra Vista, AZ didn’t want to work with me any longer and told me to “go [XXX] yourself” when I attempted to work with them for repair. This issue is exact repair the warranty recall was to avoid and should have been fixed. This is major issue which could have caused fatalities had I not gone directly to attempt a tire rotation. Vehicle was towed to dealer as that is only dealer warranty would tow to in area. The other issue is the truck has a “puck” system that was cut wrong at factory and is unable to be replaced as factory and dealership refuse to help and submit a claim. The vehicle has issues and less than 12,000 miles on it before first repair attempt. INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

The Auto lights sensor turns lights on/off at random during dark/night driving. The high beam auto sensor keeps the high beams on, so you do not notice losing driving lights. I found this out by accident, when I started losing my trailer lights at night. Quick fix, turn the light switch to on, instead of auto. NOTE - Cost me over 1000.00 to find that out. Re-wire the trailer, replace the 7-way plug.

The contact called the local dealer and made them aware of the failure. The dealer informed the contact to turn the vehicle on and off multiple times to reset the computer. The contact stated all the warning lights turned off, except for the check engine warning light. The contact stated two days later, the check engine warning light turned off independently. The contact stated that the failure recurred three times. The contact took the vehicle to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed with needing the rear passenger’s side wheel speed sensor and the rear passenger’s side ABS sensor to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired but continued to experience failure. The contact took the vehicle to Rogersville Chevrolet (5655 US-11W suite a, Rogersville, TN 37857: (423) 272-1000), however, the mechanic was unable to duplicate the failure. Our vehicle was involved in a total loss fire from the engine compartment while driving. We were driving the unit and noticed smoke, when we were merging to pull of the road flames started coming up and we immediately exited the vehicle and had to run, because it started popping. We were lucky to escape unharmed physically, but the situation could have been much worse. There were no indications or lights warning of engine failure or fire. This occurred on September 2, 2021. At this point in time there were no recalls on the vehicle. When we contacted Stellantis to report the incident, they concluded their investigation they denied responsibility. A few months after the fact we received notice of the recall. To date we have not been reimbursed for the loss of the vehicle, our personal belongings in the vehicle, and the loss of income from no longer having the vehicle. Our insurance company, Stellantis, etc all inspected the unit related to the claim and confirmed the fire began in the engine compartment.

Brand new truck (226 miles) STOPPED RUNNING on Interstate 90 in Montana. Very dangerous situation, although was able to pull to side of interstate and was able to tow truck to Butte Montana and no one was injured. Nonetheless, had this occurred in rural area, snowy mountain passes, pulling livestock trailer etc (purpose for which truck is intended), could have easily been life threatening. Understand this may be the same fuel pump issue affecting many others. Should be recalled immediately. No warning, truck just went from 75 mph to zero in very rapid fashion. Please help put a stop to this asap. Extremely dangerous in winter and rural situation, and pulling livestock or other trailers, goose neck and 5th wheel. Happy to provide more info or answer questions. Thank you.

Power steering comes and goes. They can’t get a part for 45 days minimum. Pretty much give them 60,000 dollars and they could care less

The tailgate opened without command. Was pulling a 5th wheel at the time and when the first turn onto the hwy the tailgate contacted the trailer and caused the stability light to illuminate on the warning panel. This is a safety hazard for obvious load securing reasons and also create a hazard on hwy while trying to stop any further damage to trailer. The manufacture sent a representative to inspect the tailgate and determined that it did not open by itself. Rather absurd since that particular 5th wheel cant be hooked up without closing the tail gate. I submit this report since the particular combination of options on my truck may have caused the uncommanded tailgate opening. I am sure that other reports will start to come in on this problem.
