How to read a RAM 3500 VIN — every digit explained

Every RAM 3500 carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.

1–3 · WMI4T1
4–8 · VDSBF1FK
9 · Check5
10 · YearH
11 · PlantU
12–17 · Serial123456
  • WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
  • VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
  • Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
  • Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
  • Plant (11) — which factory assembled this 3500.
  • Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.

Model-year code (10th digit)

The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:

H2017 J2018 K2019 L2020 M2021 N2022 P2023 R2024 S2025 T2026

Where to find your 3500 VIN

2020 3500

As I was driving the vehicle caught fire and I lost brakes. The vehicle had to be put into a retention pond to stop it.

2018 3500

Brakes went out and steering which caused loss of control of vehicle.

2024 3500

I was towing a 6,000 pound excavator on a 20’ tilt deck trailer and rounded a turn to see a line of traffic stopped waiting on a big truck to turn. I hit the brakes and the truck didn’t start to slow. I swerved to the shoulder and pressed breaks as hard as possible and went past several cars and t boned the big truck that was turning. The only brakes it felt like i had was the trailer brakes. Very severe accident that everyone walked away from but definitely was equipment failure involved.

2024 3500

While traveling down a hill, about 40mph, applied brakes to stop at a T intersection, truck wasn’t slowing down. Engaged engine brake, truck wasn’t slowing. Slammed brake pedal to the floor, ABS did not engage, no vibrations, wheels didn’t lock up, held for 2-3 seconds then started to release and slam brake pedal repeatedly. Truck went through intersection, hit a lot of trees, dropped down a 6’ embankment, air bags did NOT deploy, trucks frame bent on both sides behind the cab.

2026 3500

Hello, I am formally documenting a serious safety incident involving my recently purchased 2026 Dodge Ram 3500 Tradesman 6.7L dually, purchased from Towbin Dodge in [XXX] , on May 9, 2026. On May 13, 2026—only five days after purchase—we were operating the truck for our dumpster business while towing a GN trailer loaded with approximately 5 tons. We were traveling down Mount Charleston after a pickup when a critical brake failure occurred. While descending the mountain grade, the truck’s braking system failed to respond. A warning light appeared on the dashboard indicating an issue with the electric brake system. We had tow/haul mode and exhaust braking engaged, but neither system functioned properly. When my father pressed the brake pedal, the vehicle did not slow down. With a steep descent ahead and no effective braking response, my father was forced to steer the vehicle off the road into a ditch to avoid a direct impact with the mountain, which could have resulted in a fatal collision. After stopping, we noticed signs of extreme brake overheating, and the system appeared to be close to catching fire. I have video and other documentation of the incident. The vehicle is currently in the dealer’s possession. This is a major safety failure occurring within days of purchase, and I am requesting a full investigation into the brake system and all related components, including any recalls, defects, or electronic braking malfunctions. I do not want the truck anymore! Given the severity and risk to life involved, I am requesting immediate action and a full resolution regarding this vehicle. I was towing a 18000 lb fifth wheel rv about 45 mph when traffic made a panic stop in front of me. I couldn’t stop and had an accident. I later determined the brake controller on truck didn’t provide the 12 volts needed to get maximum braking from the fifth wheel brakes. I took it to the dealer and they confirmed that at slower speeds it doesn’t give maximum voltage. They contacted Ram engineer to find a fix but was informed that that it was operating as designed. This controller design was definitely the cause of this accident. I was only getting 8 volts for the trailer brakes. I contacted Cargo Brake ( manufacturer of trailer brake system) and they told me they have had many complaints from Ram owners about this problem. They recommended that I purchase an aftermarket controller which I did. It gives me maximum voltage for full braking from the fifth wheel at any speed. I should also state that my truck was new with only 2500 miles on it. I was not informed by the dealer or able to gain knowledge of this controller design anywhere in the Ram information provided in the owners manual. This is an extremely hazardous design not permitting maximum braking at slower speeds.

The contact owns a 2022 Ram 3500. The contact stated while driving at approximately 70 MPH the ABS (Anti Lock Brake System) warning light was illuminated. The contact stated that as he slowed to exit the highway he depressed the brake pedal which went to the floorboard. The contact stated that he had no brakes and was only able to stop the vehicle using the brakes on the trailer he was towing. The contact had taken the vehicle to a local dealer, who diagnosed and determined that the rear brake fluid line had become disconnected and that brake fluid had run out of the system which is why he had no brakes. The vehicle was repaired. The contact stated that the brakes failed again while he was on the highway, and again he had to use the trailer brakes to stop the vehicle from running into the back of another vehicle that was ahead of him. The contact stated that he saw the ABS light illuminated and he had also noticed smoke coming from under the vehicle. When the contact had pulled off the highway, he stated that he saw flames issuing from the rear wheel wells. The contact was able to use an onboard fire extinguisher, however, the flames were not controlled. The contact stated that the police and fire department had arrived on the scene and that the flames were put out using water. The contact was not aware if the police or fire department had written any reports. The vehicle was towed back to the same dealer. The vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 37,000.

Red hydraulic fluid in brake system cause brake failure, which cause me to cause minor damage to a brake line. Dealer has had vehicle for over 2 months, claim vehicle doesn't qualify for recall that states similar issues as v98 which is for 2019 dodge ram 3500s , also says parts are on restrictions do to recall and can not repair my vehicle do to this.

The contact stated that while driving at 30 MPH while approaching a stop on a wet road, a nearby vehicle had merged into their lane; however, the vehicle failed to come to a stop while the brake pedal was depressed. The service brake and ABS warning lights illuminated. In addition, the vehicle had impacted the rear end of a nearby vehicle. No police report was filed. No injuries or medical attention were sought. The local dealer was contacted; however, parts were not available. The contact was concerned that the recall had no parts for approximately 3 years, and the recall was expanded to include his vehicle's VIN however, still no parts were made available for the recall remedy. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 60,000.

I had just merged onto the highway and was in the left lane that was ending ahead. As soon as I switched lanes traffic came to a stop. I slammed on the brakes and the truck came to a complete stop before impact. Then with my foot still on the brake pedal the truck lurched forward making impact with the vehicle in front of me. I believe that the defective brake HCU failure caused the ABS system to fail ultimately resulting in the accident. The only damage was to the front bumper. No airbags deployed and the accident was not reported. I would like Ram to replace my bumper since I have been driving with this problem for over a year and still no fix to the problem. It is a clear safety issue and had resulted in not being able to safely drive the truck.

2013 3500

On dec. 15, 2014 i received a recall on my 2013 dodge ram 2500 diesel. The recall was for a inline fuel heater that may catch fire, it had no apparent fix, no parts, no instructions and no timeline as to when it would or could be fixed. I called the dealership and spoke to the service manager about my concerns, he told me that it was a remote possibility next to none, that the vehicle would catch fire. I asked him if i could park it inside and he said yes, and that the recall was just being sent out as a precaution. On the evening of jan 28th 2015 at approximately 0:920 pm smoke detectors alerted my dog and he woke me up. I woke my wife up yelling (fire) i panicked i took in a deep breath covered my mouth with my forearm, opened the personal entry door and stepped inside the garage not realizing how bad it was. The amount of heat being generated from the diesel fuel and the structure was so hot the back draft pulled the door out of my hand trapping me in the garage and because it was a schlage combination style there was no turning back, all i could see was complete black and red, red flames was shooting out from under my truck. My neighbor was kicking on my garage door yelling to wake up. I panicked again and hit the up button on the main garage door hoping to make a run for it, the garage door went up about a foot and fell hard because it pulled the door motor from the mounting brackets. I knew the only way out was the front door i used the side of the dodge as a guide and burnt my left hand, made it out the door and my neighbor handed me the garden hose hanging on the fence. All fire reports indicate the fire started under the hood of the dodge, the fire investigator from chrysler said in front of laramie county arson investigators that it originated at the fuel heater. State farm may have settled with dodge. Please read attachment.

The contact owns a 2024 Ram 3500. The contact stated that upon purchasing and driving the vehicle, the contact noticed an abnormal odor inside the cabin of the vehicle. The dealer was notified and informed the contact that it was a new vehicle odor. The contact stated that while driving at 65 MPH, the contact noticed clear smoke coming from the vents. Additionally, the contact stated that the rearview was inoperable. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the cab heater had experienced an internal short circuit, causing the wiring and grid heater to melt. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred while driving. The contact sustained extreme fatigue, sore throat, nausea, headaches, ringing ears, and vomiting. The contact had not received medical assistance but had taken a 3-day leave from work. The dealer was contacted via email and informed the contact that the heater assembly might not be the cause of the failure. The contact was concerned that the vehicle failure could cause a fire. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 20.

2022 3500

On 9 September, while driving, I got an emergency dashboard notice that stated Throttle System Malfunction contact dealer. It went out and then another immediately flashed that stated Exhaust System Malfunction contact dealer. The vehicle lost power within seconds after the second notice. I coasted to a stop on the side of the road. Once stopped, smoke quickly started coming out of the engine compartment and then flames. I contacted 911, an engine arrived but the truck was fully engaged and completely burnt.

2022 3500

The vehicle had been parked in the street for several hours. I started the vehicle in order to back it into my driveway for the night and then turned it off (total run time for the operation was most likely under a minute from the time the engine was started until it was shut down). The temperature was relatively cool and I did have to wait for the grid heater to cycle before the engine started. I did not notice any signs, warnings, safety indicators, or dash lights to alert me to any possible problems. Upon exiting the truck I detected a very faint and quickly disipating odor of hot electrical components, similar to a fourescent light ballast that has gone bad. I looked around but didn't see anything. I began retrieving some tools from the rear passenger side of the truck and smelled the same odor but stronger. Over the next 30-40 seconds I began to search for the source and realized that white smoke was now pouring out from under the hood of the truck. I was able to get it to start and pulled it into the street just prior to flames coming from under the hood near the drivers windshield. 911 was contacted as I tried to remove any belongings from the cab. The truck is now a total loss due to fire most likely. The fire and police responded to put the vehicle out but it was almost completely engulfed on their arrival. My insurance company is attempting to gain possession of the vehicle to begin their investigation. The Vehicle has approx 16,900 miles and was Serviced for safety recall Y76 for risk of engine fire on September 21st of 2022. The vehicle had 14,192 miles when it was inspected and passed according to the recall standards at the time. The vehicle has no other history of repairs or service items and has had no other mechanical or electrical problems to date. This was a very close call that could have resulted in the loss of my home, all my possessions, and risked harm to myself and my family if I had not stopped to get tools from the cab.

Our vehicle was involved in a total loss fire from the engine compartment while driving. We were driving the unit and noticed smoke, when we were merging to pull of the road flames started coming up and we immediately exited the vehicle and had to run, because it started popping. We were lucky to escape unharmed physically, but the situation could have been much worse. There were no indications or lights warning of engine failure or fire. This occurred on September 2, 2021. At this point in time there were no recalls on the vehicle. When we contacted Stellantis to report the incident, they concluded their investigation they denied responsibility. A few months after the fact we received notice of the recall. To date we have not been reimbursed for the loss of the vehicle, our personal belongings in the vehicle, and the loss of income from no longer having the vehicle. Our insurance company, Stellantis, etc all inspected the unit related to the claim and confirmed the fire began in the engine compartment.

On 12/4/23, at 6:37 am PST, we initiated remote start via the key fob. At 6:40 am pst, a flash and fire erupted from under the hood of the truck. We immediately worked to control the fire using extinguishers and garden hoses until the fire department arrived a few minutes later. They worked to put the fire out that engulfed the engine compartment and then worked to get the hood open to finish putting the fire out. The fire didn’t fully go out until the battery cables were cut.

Additionally, there was smoke coming from under the hood of the vehicle. The contact pulled over and refilled the oil reservoir; however, the failure recurred with oil leaking from the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and diagnosed with engine damage and connecting rod failure, which punctured the engine block. The engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired and remained at the dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. Upon investigation, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V511000 (Engine and Engine Cooling, Electrical System) however, the VIN was not included in the recall. The failure mileage was approximately 213,000. The oil light did not come on until after the engine had started knocking rapidly. The engine oil also ran out quickly as well. Consumer immediately refilled the oil and drove for 5 minutes and the engine stopped knocking for a few seconds before there was louder knocking, smoke and spewing oil. Consumer had previously reported to the customer care FCA group 2 times last August about metal shavings on the fuel filter. The fuel pump continued to produce metal shavings in the filter every time the filter was change.

The transmission spontaneously slipped out of park and went into reverse. My safety was close to critically impacted. When it began to roll on its own, I was scooped by the driver door and dragged several yards until the truck impacted another vehicle and came to a stop. I very likely could have been killed. If anyone had been behind the truck they likely could have been killed. The incident resulted in significant damage to my vehicle and the vehicle that it ran into. I have not driven the truck since the incident to reproduce. Police did come out to inspect the accident. Has not gone to dealer yet. There were no warning light, buzzers, etc. completely spontaneous. Note: the vehicle was running when this happened. When I was able to get back in truck the stalk was still in park position

The dealer and manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 300. *dt *dt*jb *dt *dt *dt *dt*jb we ran the tests as requested. With the first 2 tests, the shift lever would not move from park without having your foot on the brake. The 3rd test determined there is no indicator chime or message if you leave the vehicle with it running whether the parking brake is on or not. We also tested to see what the truck would do if we put it in neutral in the position he had the truck at the time of the accident, it immediately went forward. Lastly we tested for the in between park and reverse probability. We found there is definitely a position between p and r where the shift lever will go into and you are able to exit the truck. No indicator/warning given at this point but the p was flashing. While sitting in the truck and it being in this in between position the truck did not move forward or back. So in this position the truck acts as if it's in park not neutral as it does not roll forward. Also while in this in between position you can drop the lever down into reverse without applying the brake. As you stated, there is no way for us to safely check to see how long the truck would stay in this in between position once leaving the truck. We do know it will stay for some amount of time as we tested that without leaving the truck. The lever does slide down into reverse very easily from this in between position. Some with a level to show the slope and damages. *jb *dt *dt the consumer stated there were no more occurrences due to the fact they are conscientiously using the parking brake*tr *dt*dt 'parts of this document have been redacted to protect personally identifiable information pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).' *jb *jb

The transmission’s light came on saying that it was heated. I parked as soon as possible and that’s when the flames were coming out of the hood. I did burned my hands trying to put out the fire with 3 fire extinguishers. I did not want my truck to burn. Now, the dealer is trying to say that they can’t get a conclusion of what started the fire. The truck smells like burned transmission fluid. I sent pictures of the truck to the dealer. There is a recall in February 2020 with the same problem that I had with my 2021 Ram. Prior to this incident, the truck did not have any warnings or lights on.

I placed my truck in park and got out to close the door to my hangar. I turned around and my truck was rolling forward. It rolled into a small two seat plane and pushed it into another plane causing significant damage. When I saw what was happening I ran to the truck but got to it a little too late. I went to put the truck into park, but it was already in park. This confused me a lot because this is not suppose to happen. This morning after I started my truck I tested the gear shifter and to my surprise I am able to shift the truck out of park and all the way into drive for about 1 second or more after removing my foot from the brake. You should not be able to shift a vehicle out of park when your foot is not on the brake. After this incident I have gone online and have ready about large recalls for similar issues with RAM trucks and vans. I even seen some issues posted about my same year truck. Ram had a recall that ended with year model 2018 vehicles for this, but I dont think the issue was resolved completely, or there is a different issue causing this that needs to be investigated. I took a couple videos to prove that my truck shifts out of park without the brake being depressed.

Front differential locked up without notice on highway at highway speed and almost lost control of my vehicle. Due to the front different locking up, the front driveshaft broke but did not come completely off right away and almost came through the floor of my vehicle. The floor where the drivers feet rest right underneath the brake pedal and gas pedal bent up a few inches and is almost touching the pedal. Pieces of the driveshaft flew out all over the highway and could have injured or killed someone else if it wasn’t early AM when roads were empty. Dash cam footage shows the moment it happened, it felt and looks like I hit a land mine. Front differential needs complete replacement, there is a hole in my frame and much more was damaged due to this. Towed into dealer and manufacturer denied warranty claim. Arbitration determined it was a warrantable item and a lemon but the manufacturer still refuses to do anything about it except repurchase the vehicle at a discounted price. Very scary.

They worked to put the fire out that engulfed the engine compartment and then worked to get the hood open to finish putting the fire out. The fire didn’t fully go out until the battery cables were cut.

I was driving on the interstate highway. While driving at 60 mph towing a fifth wheel RV the front end shuddered for several seconds. Then the drivers side front wheel assembly broke off at the wheel studs. I was able to safely get to the breakdown lane. The drivers side front wheel assembly struck another vehicle traveling the oncoming lane. I was told that the vehicle that was struck was totaled. The police on scene documented the incident. The insurance representative has been notified and approved the repair. The collision repair facility documented. I also have pictures indicating broken front wheel studs.

The bearing brackets that hold the fan clutch on explode sending the fans into the radiator. When this occurs you have limited brakes and steering. This is not first one to do this to me. This time the truck caught fire because of how hot the parts were. All of the fail on the cummins engine. Each time has been around 65mph . The shops laugh about it being another when you tow it in. The vehicle had a sudden acceleration problem and the driver ended up in a big crash. The driver is in the hospital with many injuries. The vehicle was taken to the dealer before, at the beginning of March, because the check engine light was on and the throttle control light on and the truck didn't shift properly and dealer said that he doesn't have a transmission mechanic for about a month. They worked on the recalls and the oil and fuel filters change. Afterwards I took the truck to another shop. They changed the oil at the transmission, but the truck showed the same messages on the cluster almost immediately. I took the truck to another mechanic and they changed the solenoids in the transmission, but in a short time the same messages (Check engine light and throttle control light) came on the cluster. When these light came on the truck didn't shift properly so I spoke with another mechanic about the problem and he programmed me for an appointment on August 4th. This date is too late now, because on July 25th I lost the truck in a terrible accident due to sudden acceleration of the truck and the driver could not stop it. The brakes failed and he tried to slow it down driving it against the concrete curve but he couldn't, the truck kept on speeding then he hit a big tree in order not to crash other cars on the road or the people in the driveway close to the place of the accident.

I was hauling a 15,000 lb fifth wheel with the cruise control set at about 45mph coming up to the light on hwy. 35 and hwy. 20 intersection northbound in indiana. I tapped my foot on the break to shut my cruise control off like i normally do and put my foot on the throttle to control the acceleration to the light. I realize i wasn't slowing down properly and put my foot on the brake and stood both feet on the break to try to stop to avoid hitting the car in front of me. I ended up hitting the car in front of me even with the truck and trailer brakes applied. The airbags did not go off in either vehicle. Everything went so quickly, didn't know why the truck didn't want to slow down. I have had no problem with the truck or my 2018 truck. I believe the cruise control not shutting off was the cause of the accident. I would like you to come and investigate it to see if that was the issue of the accident. I can't think of anything else that would have caused it.

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ram 3500. In april of 2015, while the vehicle was in reverse, the brakes malfunctioned. The contact's vehicle failed to stop and bumped into a second vehicle. There were no injuries. While driving approximately 60 mph, the brakes suddenly activated without the brake pedal being applied. During the incident, the brake sensor, abs sensor and throttle sensor illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who replaced the brake module sensor and transmission sensor, but the failure recurred while being test driven. In november of 2015, the vehicle experienced the failure again. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who replaced the star connector. The failure recurred. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vin was not available. The failure mileage was 7,000.

Vehicle sends cluster warnings about Auto Emergency Braking unavailable/inoperable, Electronic Stability Control needs service, Antilock Brake System needs service, Parksense Unavailable, and ultimately the Check Engine indicator illuminates after restarting the vehicle. An error code also is present in the computer, U1412. This has happened twice now in a two week period. These systems are critical to safe operation of he vehicle, especially in emergency braking conditions, and could affect both the operator and the general public if they indeed failed. The vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer, yet, and is scheduled for 5/8/2026

2026 3500

This is related to the 2025/2026 Ram 3500 U1412 code relating to anti lock brake system. On this date I got an ABS warning light and check engine light. The vehicle would not turn off, was not sure if it was in gear or not, and multiple other lights came on the dash. Vehicle towed to dealership. They said they could not reproduce the error and that all the codes disappeared due to the batteries dying overnight. They replaced both batteries and returned vehicle. Have since had same problem twice more with one requiring towing again. If this problem happens on roadway while being operated it would be very dangerous on roadway.

2026 3500

Second incident relating to U1412 code where ABS related warning lights coming on. On 1/19/26 it had the same issue but was towed due to undriveable and would turn off. This time I drove straight to Dodge dealership where they got the codes, unlike last time due to batteries dead. Ram performed two flash updates and felt issue was fixed. Car is currently at dealership for third incident of same nature and had to be towed exactly same as first time on 1/19/26. Towed in on 4/16/2026. Three times when new truck less than 6 months old and 10k miles. Unsafe as mentioned on other report.

2026 3500

Vehicle at dealership a third time for same issue relating to U1412 code associated with ABS system. First time it was towed on 1/19/2026 and second time I took it to the dealership before it required towing on 3/26/2026. This time the truck required towing again after not being able to go into gear or being able to turn it off. Multiple warning lights on the dash. Still waiting for diagnosis but service department knew this problem from other vehicles and said manufacturer isn’t sure of cause.

2025 3500

While driving with a trailer after leaving a jobsite in [XXX] , the vehicle experienced a sudden electrical failure while in motion. The instrument cluster/speedometer screen went completely black and the vehicle lights stopped functioning properly while driving at night. During the incident, we lost the speedometer display and visibility from the vehicle lighting system, creating a serious safety hazard while towing a trailer on public roads. Because of the electrical failure, we were forced to pull off on the side of the road to avoid a potentially dangerous situation. After shutting the truck down and waiting approximately one hour, the vehicle was restarted and the systems eventually began functioning again. This vehicle is used regularly for commercial towing and jobsite operations. A sudden loss of instrument display, lighting systems, and electrical functionality while towing creates a major safety concern for both the occupants of the vehicle and surrounding traffic. The failure appeared intermittent because the vehicle resumed operation after sitting for a period of time. However, the incident involved complete loss of critical vehicle display and lighting systems while driving. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. 2025 3500

Bad wheel speed sensor which disables ABS, cruise control, and all the ADAS systems. Vehicle has been to dealer 5 times for this in less than 8 months. Stellantis takes over a month to replace the part. Vehicle also will not shut off and/or be able to move while this happens.

2025 3500

I have experienced two major issues. The dash cluster went blank. Not able to see any of the gauges. Vehicle ran, drove. Turned the truck on and off. Opening & closing the door to power off the truck. 15+/- minutes for the dash to return to normal. Supposedly an update to the program is pending. Second and major issue; while backing up, the truck came to a stop by itself, blocking an intersection. I was not able to place the truck in any gear. Warning light notified me that the truck was not in park. We were unable to push the truck out of the intersection. The dealer says when the "Wheel Speed Sensor" failed the truck is programed to be immobilized. I have recently returned from a trip to the Rockies pulling a 35 foot 5th wheel RV. I have traveled several mountain roads. One 12 mile stretch with a 8% grade. Had the wheel sensors failed on any of these roads the chance of and accident were great. Potentially deadly. This is a known issue. Ram has decided to use the newly redesigned parts for production of new vehicles. No parts are available or estimated ship date. My truck has been towed to Capitol Ram of Garner, NC and will sit until Ram decides to provide parts. Part numbers: 68646345AA Left & 68646344AA Right

As I was preparing to travel for the holidays comíng up, I was traveling to Texas to see family. I was driving around 65 mph when suddenly the truck started jerking and slowing down when the gas pedal would not give it power. The car behind slammed the brakes and in order to avoid hitting me had to went the the side of the highway. Before coming to a complete stop the truck a 2020 ram 3500 shut off and will not come off. The tow truck was able to scan the truck and the codes are for low fuel pressure and fuel pump. This was a very scary situation because I’m with all my family and not only did I put them in danger by this truck failing with out a notice of any kind but also put others like the vehicle behind in danger because the truck failed. I have look up and this seems to be a common issue with all the “new ram trucks” not sure why there is no recall yet. Hoping this gets looked at and something can be done for the safety of others

I was on my way home from the local RAM Dealer last night, where I wanted to sell my truck (after inspecting it, they offered me $82K for it), when, spontaneously, my truck started to smoke from under the hood and literally burst into flames! I had to pull over and jump out to avoid being burned alive! I am so traumatized. I'm attempting to tow what's left of this truck to the dealer this morning. I hope FCA will take responsibility for this!

The Howard County Maryland Police and Fire Deportment were contacted and responded. ( Police Incident # 2259220 Fire Incident # 2022-020323) The vehicle and equipment on the truck are a total loss additionally the heat generated from the fire damaged other company vehicles. Fortunately, the fire was contained and did not spread to adjacent vehicles or buildings. We were awaiting notification that recall could be completed inasmuch as parts for the recall were on backlog and not available.

For thanksgiving i was driving home from a trip to california about 800 miles away from home, on a merging lane i stepped on the gas to clear lane for a emerging semi trailer i was traveling around 65 mph as i did that i got a warning message on my dashboard to service exhaust system then lost all power from my vehicle from 65 to 35 on interstate 5 a drastically slowdown causing the cars behind me to crash. I pull to the shoulder and my truck just died would not start had it towed to closest dealer next morning. Had to sleep with my new born in the cold truck. Once at dealer i was told the cp4 or high flow pressure pump had fail and the complete fuel system needed replaced. The estimate was for $20,000 but my insurance cover $13,000 of the bill the rest i had to borrow from friends and family. Service advisor said this is a very common problem on all new rams. If it's so common why not fix the issue my whole family was out in danger that night and also was expensive. The issue is fix for now but is a matter of time before it happens again

I got this 2024 vehicle brand new with 15 miles on it in August of 2025 . It is now January of 2026 by check engine light had came on 7 times since November of 2025. I had to shut down work because of this . It came on the 8th time today and I was told by the delearship that they didn’t know what to do . My truck is at 43,000 miles and literally a piece of junk.

We bought our 2024 3500 Dodge RAM in Florida in late March. Last weekend the truck started to feel like it was jerking while we were pulling our 5th wheel. On Monday we schedule an appointment in Brockton Massachusetts at a dealership. We were told there need to be a system update and that it was all set. On Wednesday we started our 3 hour drive to Maine when suddenly while we were on the highway the truck began to overheat and revving loud only going 35mph. We pulled over into a parking lot and called RAM roadside assistance. We were told to let the truck cool down and try again. After being in a parking lot with our 4 kids and 2 dogs in 100 degree weather for 6 hours we attempted to start the truck. However every time we put it in drive the truck shut off. At this time we had to get it towed for $300, today the local RAM autoshop is saying they looked at the truck and transmission is gone. They are also saying they will not be able to look at the truck for a month. We travel full-time in our RV and now are stranded with our RV and no way to pull it anywhere.

Can a RAM 3500 tow? Towing & payload

As a pickup, the RAM 3500 is built to tow and haul. The exact maximum towing capacity and payload depend on the engine, drivetrain and whether it has the factory tow package.

What sets your 3500's tow & payload rating:

  • Engine — a larger or turbocharged engine tows more than the base unit.
  • Drivetrain & axle — 4WD/AWD and the axle ratio shift the rating.
  • Tow package — the factory towing package (hitch, wiring, transmission cooler) raises the max.
  • Payload & GVWR — GVWR caps the combined load; more passengers and cargo lower how much you can tow.

Exact towing capacity, payload and GVWR are added per engine, drivetrain and trim — decode your VIN above, or check the driver's door-jamb and hitch labels. Curb weight from vehicle specifications.
